29/07 Congratulations Levi Collins

bmxultra.com press release
bmxultra.com's Levi Collins won the 25-29 mens 20" class at the 2010 UCI World Championships in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, and to back that up he finished in second place in the 25-29 mens cruiser class as well.

He made the trip to Copenhagen to defend his crown, and everything was going to plan. Levi found himself, once again, in the main with a chance for back to back wins. When the gate dropped Levi was in the mix but this time the cards didn't fall his way, Levi had to settle for 8th place, which is still a fantastic effort.

You can check out some of Levi's races and a whole bunch of others over at www.bmx-videos.com

On behalf of the bmxultra.com family we'd like to congratulate Levi and wish him better luck on the cruiser on Sunday.

28/07 BMX Australia's new helmet policy

by bmxultra.com
BMX Australia released a new helmet policy on their website last week that's been causing a bit of confusion on the bmxultra.com forum and Facebook..

Here's a link to the media release: http://bmxaustralia.com.au/site/cycling/bmx/downloads/2011%20Media%20Release/11.07.20%20-%20Helmet%20Policy.pdf

The problem is the section that reads as follows

c) For off-road competition such as BMX Racing and MTB Downhill, a full-face helmet is required. Such helmets must conform to International Cycling Union (UCI) Regulations.

Further, CA, BMXA & MTBA endorse the Australian Standards Association recommendation that visors on full-face helmets should be detachable (ie, attached via a clip-on or Velcro mechanism and not fixed by bolts or other means).

Where people are being confused is that this is a new helmet policy, it's an endosement of a recommendation, and not a rule change.

As long as your helmet conforms to the UCI Regulations you won't be forced to buy a new helmet.

This is the UCI BMX Helmet rule as per version on 1.02.11 of the UCI cycling rule book.

6.1.055 Helmet
Helmets must be of full face construction equipped with a visor of minimum 10 centimeters. Helmet
strap must be securely fastened during the completion of the race. Open face helmets are not
allowed.

We hope that clears things up.

Fisticuffs with the boss could potentially be confused by some at the office as a sign of insubordination. Vigorous dancing on his desk with exotic facial contortions and frequent airborne double-bird fist pumping hand gestures while wearing Hesh headphones is probably a more diplomatic way of saying, "Leave me alone so I can rock again."

27/07 ONE BICYCLES Australia Factory Team at Macarthur Open, NSW

ONE Bicycles Australia press release
by Miekel Rose
This past weekend saw the second attempt to run the Macarthur Open, a NSW State Series Round, after the first event was rained out. Well....the second attempt almost ended up the same as the first due to torrential rain all week leading up to the event. The Club worked tirelessly to ensure the event went ahead as planned. The track was heavy and struggled to dry during the event. This event was also a Dynamite Round for the ACT riders, so there was much on the line for many. With 500 entries posted, it was looking like a massive event. Due to the weather leading up to the event and riders at the World Titles, final numbers were down to just above 400 entries. Not a bad turnout considering!

As Mikayla, Nik and Josh Rose are all part of the ACTBMX State Team, they participated in a cross country ride around and over Mount Stromlo in Canberra on the Saturday prior to the event. The weather in Canberra had limited track time, so some bike time was a great relief, with the 3 kids riding 20km in the day all over the mountain. Nice warm up for the Open the next day in Sydney.

Mikayla was hoping to come out and get some positive results after a disappointing situation at the Mighty 11’s earlier in the year. Mikayla was on fire, winning the first two motos leading competitors Rene Williams and Emma O’Hearn. The class was combined with the 10 girls to get the numbers up for the event. In her third heat Mikayla pulled herself out of her pedals and gave the field a 5 bike head start. Not wanting to drop a race on her 20” bike she took off after the pack. After some gutsy riding she hauled the field in and passed them all for a win in the third heat. In the final Mikayla was out in front comfortably by the first corner and never challenged, taking the overall win for the day in 11 Girls 20” ahead of Emma O’Hearn and Rene Williams, then the 10 girls.

On Cruiser Mikayla was testing out her new Alius Rox hubs and hoping she would ride well in the ladies cruiser class which put her up against riders many years her senior. Like her 20”, Mikayla was keen for some good results and pushed hard against the older and bigger girls with a second and two thirds. In her final she pushed hard but was saving her energy for the 20” final but still managed a third for the day and a great effort to keep the bigger women at bay.

Nik was up against all his regular rivals in the 13 Boys class and hoping for an idea of where he was sitting against them. Nik rode well in his heats with two seconds and a fifth after sitting down prior to the line allowing two riders to pass him. Nik was struggling a little with the heavy conditions stating his gearing was a little heavy after switching out his SNAP gears for his home track in preparation for training for the NSW Titles. He had made the final and was happy considering the struggle he was having. Nik came out with the pack and after some bustle and barge, raced hard with the top contenders and crossed the line in a credible fifth place. Nik stated he was happy with his riding on the day.

In the 13-14 Boys Cruiser, Nik was hoping for a better result as his cruiser was dialled and he had been riding it well! Nik said at the beginning of the day he was going to ride a measured race in this event, saving himself for the finals on both bikes. Well he kept to his word. He rode well within himself on cruiser with three second places in the heats, securing a spot in the final. When the gate dropped in the final Nik took off and after a side by side ride to the first corner with Daniel Morris, he took off and never looked like being caught, taking away a win in the final and a big smile to go with it.

Josh was racing A Pro and his 16 Boys age in 20” and had some initial concerns about racing some bigger names in Pro. After some convincing Josh decided to have a go and see where he was against the faster class. When the gate dropped in A Pro, Josh came out well settling quickly in the fourth spot and managed to cross the line there too. I think that initial reaction was short lived with another fourth in both heats 2 and 3. Josh had got himself in to the Semi Final of A Pro and was keen for a good result. In the Semi, Josh had a slow gate and found himself boxed out down the first straight and battled all the way to the line finishing in 7th and missing the cut. The smile on his face was enough for me, knowing he didn’t let himself down and he had fun.

In 16 Boys, Josh was up against the winner of A Pro Blakey Moore, who is an absolute freak on a bike. Josh rode with heaps of confidence in his age class and secured wins in all his heats. In the final, Josh saw himself on the gate with Blake and it was going to be a tough ask to catch Mighty Mouse. Like Nik, I had swapped out Josh’s SNAP gearing and he was loving it. In the final he got a great gate and chased Blake all the way round the track with a comfortable second in his age class. Josh was stoked and thanked me for convincing him to race both classes.

The kids rode well and with little or no real bike training leading up to the event, there was definitely room for improvement leading in to the NSW Titles at Liverpool in late September, early October.

I would like to thank Scotty Hand for sending down the SNAP Chainrings for the boys and can’t wait to get the next package of amazing SNAP Gear for the Cruisers. Also to Scotty, thanks for the new Alius ROX Hubset for Mikayla’s cruiser, they are an amazing affordable product and almost instant engagement, makes them a hub of choice. Check them out! Massive thanks to Paul and the family at ECI for sending up all the new T.H.E. Pro and Mini Moto number plates and T.H.E. Skinz GOLF Gloves. What a difference great products make to an already amazing ONE bike. Thanks as always to Shane Jenkins for ensuring the kids remain part of the best BMX Importers in Australia in ECI, who allow them to race the Best BMX Frames on the market in ONE Bicycles.

Last of all but definitely not the least, to my wife Kaylene for helping the kids out all day when I was working, you are my champion. Thanks to Wayne Hughes for ensuring we always have a great place to watch the kid’s race, cheers mate. To Erik at RUSH Industries, the new plate stickers and Banner look absolutely amazing. See you all at a race soon. Come on over and take a look at the best Frames in the business decked out with the best gear supplied by Australia’s great BMX Supporters in ECI and A Team Distribution.

25/07 Sinz Elite 20-Mil Forks and iHub Front Wheels Are in Stock Now

VSI press release
CERRITOS, CA-VSI just got its first shipment of 20-Mil iHub front wheels, which means the same fork and front wheels used by Marc Willers, Arielle Martin and, soon, the Factory Intense and Factory Speed Teams, are available to the public.

This is a spy shot of a new iHub 20-Mil wheel fresh off the boat.

Marc Willers began test riding the 20millimeter front end at his regular training grounds in Perris, California, in May. On his first ride Marc said he noticed a marked improvement in the handling down the straights and through the corners.

"It's a huge improvement over regular axles. It's stiffer and straighter. On the gate, I noticed that it's easier to balance because there's less twisting. And there's a corner at the Perris track that I usually have to touch my brakes to get through. With the 20-millimeter forks, I can just power through it at full speed," he said.

Marc won his first two races on the set-up, including winning the Super Cross race on the uber-technical Papendal track in The Netherlands.

Over the past few weeks, several other Elite riders have purchased forks to pair with modified mountain bike hubs. Feedback from all of them has been overwhelmingly positive and goes something like this: "I'll never go back to standard 10-mil forks."

The 20-Mil front kits (front wheels and forks) are available in 20- and 24-inch sizes. The iHub are laced to 1.75 Pro rims. Although we are calling them "kits," they are sold separately.

Sinz Elite Carbon Pro CFC forks come with 10- or 20-millimeter dropouts for 20- and 24-inch bikes.

VSI Products, Inc.designs, develops and sells a wide range of BMX and mountain biking products including bicycles, frames, forks, components, helmets, protective gear, clothing and tires. Intense, Sinz Elite, Sinz and THE are market leaders in BMX racing, while the newly created Speed, EYE and AVE (pronounced Avenue) brands are quickly gaining popularity within the BMX community.

18/07 Worlds by Lloyd Ramsay

by Lloyd Ramsay
"Since the 2011 Worlds in Copenhagen are about to happen I thought it would be a good time to release this. Worlds is a compilation of photos I shot at the 2010 event held in South Africa. The photobook is 100% free and licensed under a Creative Commons license which means you can do whatever you want with it as long as my name stays attached and you don't make money off it. Nobody wants to pay for something like this and all copyright laws are outdated so it made sense to run with this model.

To add another dimension to it I composed a score which plays over the book. An MP3 version of the soundtrack is available (also for free) on the site and is iTunes ready. Wallpapers are also available.

I would rather you read through the book than me explain it to you, but the main idea behind it was to capture the events emotion while giving a sense of what it was like to be there. Its not all about the fastest, flashiest rider but rather the collective that make up our sport.

The PDF can only be read using the latest version of Adobe Reader. To try do my part for the environment, printing of the PDF is disabled.

The site was designed with thanks by Tom Clark from www.designyourcode.co.uk. Tom also rides BMX."

UCI press release
The UCI and Global SX Events Inc. announced today that the 4th leg of the 2011 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup, scheduled for 16-17 September 2011 in Sarasota Florida (USA), has unfortunately been cancelled and will not be replaced. “Sarasota was indeed a great location for a BMX Supercross World Cup, and up until this point we were impressed with their plans for BMX” says Johan Lindstrom, CEO of Global SX Events Inc.  “The disappointment is obviously that we are convinced that this could have been resolved if Sarasota County had been more diligent in addressing pending issues.”

UCI President Pat McQuaid expressed his disappointment at the cancellation today which he termed as a “real blow for the whole BMX family.”

He reiterated the importance of the series in the UCI calendar.  “The 2011 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup has seen exceptional growth this season, in terms of participation, on-site spectator numbers and TV viewing ”  McQuaid said.

15/07 Goldcross Cycles BSX: working bee tomorrow & posters

by bmxultra.com
BSX (short for Bicycle Supercross, and is often referred to as Backyard Supercross) is a Royal Children's Hospital fund raiser. It will be on again on Monday January 16, 2011 (during Track Attack). It will be the seventh running of the one on one backyard BMX race. BSX is the longest running event of it's kind in the world and draws a large number of competitors from around Australia. The event has pulled a few international visitors and a number of Olympians.

BSX2012Working Bee: Saturday July 16
Well there's still no signs of the fresh new dirt we are waiting for so instead of waiting for it we are going to start some digging.

We have two priorities; the first is to finish off the drainage work that we started for the first half of the track. The second is to start working on our new berm combos (see diagram below). We will start to shift dirt around to start to build the outside hip jumps. At least with that work done it will be easier and quicker to get the new dirt in. If you have time to help dig tomorrow we'll be getting started around 10pm and probably go through until 5ish. The track might be a little slick to ride, but you are also welcome to bring your bike along, and some carpet if you have any spare (to throw on the slippery bits) and have a ride as well.

If you plan to come along email webmaster@bmxultra.com and let us know you are coming.

Posters
We have been doing a lot of early planning work this year for BSX, the event is six months away and we plan to have posters out in stores to help plug the event even more. If you would like to get involved with the event as a partner please let us know early so you can have your company represented on the posters. We would like to get the posters circulating around October time, so please get in early.

Partnership opportunities
If you would like to be involved in BSX2012 we have partnership packages available now, email webmaster@bmxultra.com for details. Basically we are looking for products or even services for auctions/raffles and it's possible to make cash donations (these are made out directly to the Royal Children's Hospital and tax receipts available). 100% of profits raised will go directly to the Royal Children's Hospital.

BSX track changes
We have been promissing some track changes for some time now, but have been waiting for some equipment to truck in the 100 cubic metres of new dirt (that's approximately half as much as we have already). Instead of making you wait for us to complete the changes to see what we have planned we have a sneak peek of what is in store for you guys. The BSX track has had the same layout now for 6 years, given the size and shape of the land it's built on it's difficult to change that, but there's nothing to say we can't use a little imagination and a lot of influence from our dirt jumping brothers. These past few years we have had to contend with both rain and heat when BSX is on so any track changes would need to allow for riding no matter what the conditions. Add to that our observations of how the track is ridden both at BSX and other times. It's the last half of the track that we plan to flatten and start again. Here is our rough guide for the third corner. The center is a dirt quarter pipe that will be approximately 1.5 meters tall and 5 meters wide. The outside will have two 90° hip jumps, they are likely to be around 1.2 meters tall. If this works according to plan it will be mirrored for the fourth corner as well. How the rest of the track will look, well, you will need to wait and see.

About BSX
BSX (Bicycle Supercross) is one-on-one sprint trails style racing on a backyard track built specifically to test a rider's skills. The short straights, lofty jumps and tight corners are very intense under race conditions but also fun for competitors and create quite a lot of entertainment for spectators. The event provides a unique experience for the local Victorian riders, as well as the interstate and international visitors during an off day of the Track Attack series. The events primary function is to raise money for the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation. In just five years the event has raised approximately $24,700 which has provided the hospital with new equipment. Funds have been raised through gate takings, raffles, auctions and donations.

About the Royal Children's Hospital
'The Royal Children's Hospital is the major specialist paediatric hospital in Victoria and provides a full range of clinical services and health promotion and prevention programs for infants through to adolescents. Each year the Royal Children's Hospital treats tens of thousands of children through our Emergency Department, inpatient admissions and outpatient visits. The Royal Children's Hospital Foundation plays a vital role in providing additional funding to support important research projects and purchase state of the art medical equipment to ensure that every child receives the very best treatment now and into the future.

14/07 Video: The Sam Willoughby ProActive Ad

by bmxultra.com
If you haven't seen it already here's the Sam Willoughby ProActive Ad that has stirred people up on the internet. I like the idea of more BMX on mainstream TV, to me Sam is more of a star than those other "personalities" who endorse the same product. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ioxmjU2Kpkg

Our 2012 Rhythm Section wheels are now in stock and they are better than ever!  Rhythm Section wheels feature our new micro-adjust Section hubs which have 3X the engagements as our previous model hubs making them stronger and quicker.  New colors and graphics make them even look fast!

It will be the seventh running of the one on one backyard BMX race. BSX is the longest running event of it's kind in the world and draws a large number of competitors from around Australia. The event has pulled a few international visitors and a number of Olympians.

We were at the historical Sleeman "Olympic standard BMX track" opening in early June and took a bunch of photos which you may have already seen. Corey Stafford took a bunch of the photos from the first ever pro final at the track and put them together in a nice sequence. We like it so much we thought we'd post it here.

It's a little quiet on the news front, so we thought it's time to spread some bmx loving to an all girls site made for girls by girls. Check out www.bmxergirl.com. We don't know much about the site, but it's sad the number of girls BMX sites that have come and gone in the time bmxultra.com is running. This one looks like it's built to last with a good mix of articles.
