31/08 Old School BMX bikes in New Mexico

by Glenn Ballinger
Glenn Ballinger here. I have attached some pictures that you and your readers may enjoy.
I took these myself yesterday in a farm shed in New Mexico. I was there picking up some Hot Rod parts.
There must be 300 – 400 unrestored & original BMX’s from the early 70’s thru the mid 80’s along with some early 90’s gear.
Roger Decosta, DG, GJS, RRS, Profile, MCS, a stack of Graphite tuff wheels, early flight & bullseye cranks, early Kawasaki & Yamaha suspension BMX’s.
The guy that has them is in his late 70’s & started collecting them when his son raced in the early 70’s
Cheers & keep up the good work with BMXULTRA

30/08 Goldcross Cycles BSX: Dig/Ride session this Saturday

by bmxultra.com
BSX (short for Bicycle Supercross, and is often referred to as Backyard Supercross) is a Royal Children’s Hospital fund raiser. It will be on again on Monday January 16, 2012 (during Track Attack). It will be the seventh running of the one on one backyard BMX race. BSX is the longest running event of it’s kind in the world and draws a large number of competitors from around Australia. The event has pulled a few international visitors and a number of Olympians.

Dig/Ride session this Saturday
We have been quietly working away at restructuring one of the corners on the track with just a shovel and a wheel barrow, which has been quite slow, but we now have a hip jump that’s just about ready to ride.

If you have some time free on Saturday between 10am and 5pm and we’d love some help to try to get one of the corners finished. This will be the basis of how the last half of the track will change. Our intention is to make the last half of the track a whole lot more fun and challenging, it will be more free ride style than race style but we are sure it will still make for some great racing.

Email webmaster@bmxultra.com to let us know you are coming and for questions, or directions if you need any.

Partnership opportunities
If you would like to be involved in BSX2012 we have partnership packages available now, email webmaster@bmxultra.com for details. Basically we are looking for products or even services for auctions/raffles and it’s possible to make cash donations (these are made out directly to the Royal Children’s Hospital and tax receipts available). 100% of profits raised will go directly to the Royal Children’s Hospital.

BSX2012Posters
We have been doing a lot of early planning work this year for BSX, the event is six months away and we plan to have posters out in stores to help plug the event even more. If you would like to get involved with the event as a partner please let us know early so you can have your company represented on the posters. We would like to get the posters circulating around October time, so please get in early.

BSX track changes
We have been promissing some track changes for some time now, but have been waiting for some equipment to truck in the 100 cubic metres of new dirt (that’s approximately half as much as we have already). Instead of making you wait for us to complete the changes to see what we have planned we have a sneak peek of what is in store for you guys. The BSX track has had the same layout now for 6 years, given the size and shape of the land it’s built on it’s difficult to change that, but there’s nothing to say we can’t use a little imagination and a lot of influence from our dirt jumping brothers. These past few years we have had to contend with both rain and heat when BSX is on so any track changes would need to allow for riding no matter what the conditions. Add to that our observations of how the track is ridden both at BSX and other times. It’s the last half of the track that we plan to flatten and start again. Here is our rough guide for the third corner. The center is a dirt quarter pipe that will be approximately 1.5 meters tall and 5 meters wide. The outside will have two 90° hip jumps, they are likely to be around 1.2 meters tall. If this works according to plan it will be mirrored for the fourth corner as well. How the rest of the track will look, well, you will need to wait and see.

BSX planned track changes

About BSX
BSX (Bicycle Supercross) is one-on-one sprint trails style racing on a backyard track built specifically to test a rider’s skills. The short straights, lofty jumps and tight corners are very intense under race conditions but also fun for competitors and create quite a lot of entertainment for spectators. The event provides a unique experience for the local Victorian riders, as well as the interstate and international visitors during an off day of the Track Attack series. The events primary function is to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation. In just five years the event has raised approximately $24,700 which has provided the hospital with new equipment. Funds have been raised through gate takings, raffles, auctions and donations.

About the Royal Children’s Hospital
‘The Royal Children’s Hospital is the major specialist paediatric hospital in Victoria and provides a full range of clinical services and health promotion and prevention programs for infants through to adolescents. Each year the Royal Children’s Hospital treats tens of thousands of children through our Emergency Department, inpatient admissions and outpatient visits. The Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation plays a vital role in providing additional funding to support important research projects and purchase state of the art medical equipment to ensure that every child receives the very best treatment now and into the future.

25/08 Photos: AUSBIKE trade show

by bmxultra.com
The AUSBIKE trade show was on in Melbourne over the weekend. We got together a bmxultra.com crew and checked out the latest and greatest.

As far as BMX racing products go there wasn’t a lot to offer. It was lucky that the ECI crew showed up this year, or it would have been a quick visit.

The ECI stand including a lot of products from Profile, Sun Ringle, Alienation, THE (the new helmets look great and have a nice price to match), Kuwahara, Sinz, Speed, Intense and a whole lot more.

Monza had some cool Alpine Stars gear on display, they also has some nice Lezyne pumps and tools, as well as some interesting training tools from CycleOps which isn’t BMX stuff but something for the techno weenies.

There were some nice little balance bikes from Wooden.net.au for the next generation of BMXer. They had a sweet little alloy demo rig that will go into production soon that I wish I had when I was a kid.

While on the subject of balance bikes, the girls were there again from Strider and they were talking about having Strider races at next years show, so keep an ear out for that if you have a 1-5 year old.

Contour was there in full force with a bigger and better range of cameras and accessories than ever before. We stopped by there to pick up some accessories and left with a burning desire to buy a new Contour+, damn that’s an awesome little package.

Jason and Shane both had their cameras out, so don’t be surprised if you see some double ups.

22/08 Shanaze Reade and Marc Willers win UCI BMX Supercross World Cup London 2011

UCI press release
London, Olympic Park 20 August 2011- Witnessed by a sell out crowd home favourite Shanaze Reade (GBR) dominated the final on the Olympic ‘home course’. With the men Marc Willers (NZL) was first to cross the finish line in the final to claim top honours during the third stop of the UCI BMX Supercross at London’s Olympic Park.

It was a tough day for all the riders, organisers and track builders. Rain delayed racing until approximately 17.00 hours. The 64 Elite Men and 32 Elite Women started practice as scheduled but had to wait for about three hours before practice and resumed and racing started.

The sky completely cleared and the sun came out for Reade and Willers but also for the enthusiastic crowd that refused to go home. England showed picture perfect conditions as even the wind died down to create a historic BMX race on the Olympic BMX track in London.

Sixty-four Elite men qualified for the finals. But there was no room for error in the qualification round. Due to time restrains the racing went straight into elimination mode. The best four of each heat qualified for the next round. Do or die.

Shanaze Reade was extremely happy to be able to win in front of her home crowd. “This gives me confidence. The British crowd made racing so much easier. I have not experienced such a big and enthusiastic crowd myself. The whole day was an emotional roller coaster. Eventually the sun came out. But this is England and we have to deal with it. We all handled it well. It is great to win one year ahead of the Olympic on this track.”

In the men’s final Willers won the hole shot and was leading until the crossover in the second straight. On the Red Bull jump Sam Willoughby (AUS) and World Champion Joris Daudet (FRA) passed the New Zealander on either side. But in the rhythm section Willers showed his magic and caught up again. He led through the last turn ad continued to claim victory on the finish line.

Marc Willers was al smiles. “It was tough. With the delays. But I thought about Papendal where the conditions were just as bad. I knew I held it in me as I did in Holland. Once in the final I saw Sam (Willoughby) on the inside and Joris (Daudet) passing me. I had flashbacks of the worlds. But I kept my head and kept my line.”

The London track features some unique innovations like the radical ‘Oakley Underground’, a tunnel where the women drop in and pop out on the other end while the men have to master the exciting Red Bull jump. There is some discussion about the innovations as some riders like Willers favour the typical BMX track.

Willers has an opinion about that. “I am more a fan of the three corners and four shapes course. But you can make your move on this track. Surprisingly everybody stayed up.”

ONE Bicycles Australia press release
Mikayla Rose was recently announced as the ACT Sportstar of the month for July 2011 in BMX. ACT Sportstar of the year awards are given to recognise athletes who excel in their chosen sport in the ACT. This is an amazing achievement for an 11 year old girl and is just reward for a young girl who is currently back to back ACT Champion, back to back NSW Champion and looking to get the threepeat at this year’s NSW Championships being held at the Liverpool Club in Sydney. Mikayla’s dominance in her age class has been encouraging for the lead up to this event.

Mikayla was so excited to receive the same award also given to ACT BMX Champion and current Australian HPP Team member Caroline Buchanan in the past. Mikayla is very proud of her achievements in BMX and her goal is to represent Australia one day and hopefully at the Olympics. She is definitely on course to reach her goals.

Mikayla said she could not have achieved this without the ongoing support of her sponsors, ONE Bicycles, SNAP BMX Components and Alius. Mikayla would like to thank her manager Shane Jenkins for all his support, along with Scott Hand for allowing her to run the beautiful SNAP gear. Huge thanks to ECI for their relentless support for Mikayla and the rest of the ONE Bicycles Australia Factory Team.

By winning this award, Mikayla is now in the running for the Sportstar of the year and will attend the dinner later in the year to see if she has managed to put BMX on top of the ladder for sport in the ACT. We all wish her luck. Well done young lady, you are a true champion.

19/08 Morphine Industries Ascends on the ABA Land O’Lakes Nationals

Morphine Industries press release
Leading up to ABA’s Land-O-Lakes national there had been a lot of pit gossip about how rad the track was at Pineview Park, which happens to be the home track of Elliot McGrath and Alise Post.  Pineview bmx is not only one of the smoothest tracks you will ever ride but its one if the most technical.  This laid out the ground work for a weekend of awesome racing action.

First up for our crew was A Pro, Olijuwon Davis. He got off to a rough start in practice by going otb over the triple going into the 2nd turn – twice!  But he came back strong the rest of the weekend with podium finishes both days.

AA Pro-Mike Kapes made the journey from the sunshine state to bang bars in Elite men. Money Mike was riding solid all weekend but outside lanes and bad luck left him out of the mains – but if you know Mike, then you know that he will work that much harder when he gets home.

Next up was Charlie Hunt-28-35x. (He was on a mission after having to play follow the leader at his last race) He redeemed himself with three wins and a 2nd in class and cruiser.

And finally, Doran Bradshaw-36-40x. If it was a race to the first turn, he would have went untouched all weekend but unfortunately, you have to keep it pinned until the white line!  He definately had an off weekend but still walked away with a 2nd in cruiser on Saturday – and a lot of motivation for the next race!

That next race is next weekend in Tucson at the ABA’s Southwest Nationals. Stay tuned for more tales from the road as the west coast always manages to produce entertainment, on and off the track!

Morphine Industries would like to thank its Factory Team Sponsors; HARO BIKES (harobikes.com), Fly Racing (www.flyracingbmx.com),  Alienation (www.alienationbmx.com), DK Bicycles (dkbicycles.com), Folmer BMX (folmer-bmx.com),  Sinz Racing (www.sinz-racing.com), Rennen (www.rennendesigngroup.com), Tioga (www.tiogausa.com/bmx), Black Crown (BlackCrownBmx.com)

18/08 2011 President’s Cup to be paired with the ABA Grands in Tulsa Oklahoma

USA BMX press release
One of the most prestigious and exiting events in all of BMX is the annual State vs. State NBL President’s Cup, and one of the most frequently asked questions is, “When and where will the President’s Cup be?”.  As the face of BMX racing in North America evolves and the NBL and ABA National Series are molded into one mega series under USA BMX, great events like the Presidents Cup are taking on a whole new meaning.  We are pleased to announce that the 2011 USA BMX President’s Cup will be hosted on Friday, November 25, 2011 in conjunction with the 2011 ABA Grand Nationals in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

When deciding the location for this amazing event major considerations were taken into account.  Paramount among them were pairing the State vs. State ABA event with the NBL State vs. State event and finding a central location to ensure participation from the entire USA BMX membership which is now evenly geographically distributed across the U.S.  The ABA Grand Nationals (and future USA BMX Grands) are hosted annually, Thanksgiving weekend and features one of the most dynamic arenas at a quarter of a mile long and a BMX track that is constructed with more dirt than any other track in the World.  The ABA Grands are very similar to the NBL Grands as the race takes place on both a Saturday and Sunday, preceded by a special race hosted on Friday.  This ABA Friday race—The Race of Champions—is for riders who have qualified to participate by finishing in the top 10 in the ABA State Series based on age and class (i.e. top ten 10 year old expert).  Last year’s Race of Champions featured participants from 45 states and the merging of the two events under USA BMX will realize participation from all 50 states, Puerto Rico and at least 2 Canadian provinces.  NBL riders will qualify as they have in the past by finishing in the top 15 in their NBL State Series based on age and class.

The great tradition of the President’s Cup will continue and feature a Parade of States, with all riders from each state completing a track walk adorning their State’s flag and name, State vs. State team competition where riders from each state will challenge each other on a State Team Sheet.  The bleachers will be divided by state as the state teams group together to cheer on the fellow statesmen and strategize on how to win the Cup.  Additionally a very special cup will be awarded to the wining state with an additional banner acknowledging the winner of every President’s Cup since the beginning of the event in 1985.  The award of the day will be fabulous cups.  In addition, the champions in every class will be awarded no. 1 plates and vehicle stickers.

Anyone who attends this year’s President’s Cup/Race of Champions is sure to be impressed.  Tulsa is an outstanding host city that is ideally and centrally located to the USA BMX track base and offers amazingly low hotel rates (some as low as $69 per night).  The Tulsa Expo Square is the perfect indoor BMX venue, all under one expansive roof, featuring a track is legendary year after year.  Additionally, the vendor and team areas will be the largest you have ever experienced.  Please don’t miss this historic event!

17/08 AUSBIKE bike expo in Melbourne this weekend

by bmxultra.com
Don’t forget AUSBIKE this weekend. Traditionally there isn’t a lot of BMX race product on display, but we hear that Elite Cycle Imports, one of Australia’s biggest distributors of BMX race products, will be there in quite a large booth.

We’ll be there on Saturday and will be getting the lowdown on the latest.

Keep an eye out on our twitter account on the day for photos and the latest in BMX race products.

The show will open on Saturday the 20th of August 2011 and run until the 22nd of August 2011, with the first two days reserved as a public-only event and the last day trade-only.

Ausbike 2011 covers all kinds of cycling including:

This World Cup Series, sponsored by Swatch, is the leading international BMX event series and is one of the first events ever to be staged on the new Olympic Park in east London. This UCI BMX Supercross World Cup Series is part of the ‘London Prepares’ series, also allowing the London 2012 Organising Committee to test crucial aspects of its operations in preparation for next year’s Games.

About the Olympic BMX Track
Located in the north of the Olympic Park in Stratford in east London, the new BMX Track is approximately 450m long and features an eight-metre high ramp at the start, followed by jumps, bumps and tightly banked corners. For the first time ever the track features the ‘Oakley Underground’, a 15 m long tunnel, part of the women’s 2nd straight and the ‘Red Bull Box Jump’, a challenging and technical feature where Elite men fly on a box and off again.

Nationwide coverage in USA
For the first time since the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the American public will be able to see a major BMX event on nationwide television. Universal Sport – a media partner of UCI and the UCI BMX Supercross – has announced that the third round of the series, which will take place on the Olympic BMX track in London on August 19th and 20th, will be broadcast on NBC Sports in the United States on August 21st.

15/08 BMXWA purchase MyLaps Transponders

BMX Sports Western Australia press release
BMX Sports Western Australia has entered a new phase in event management and training with the announcement that they have purchased the Mylaps Transponder Timing System.

This brings a new level of technology to BMX racing in Western Australia as the transponders are introduced for the 2011/12 Super Series Season.

BMX WA State President Steve Dixon said “This is a significant investment in the future of BMX in Western Australia and will have a significant benefit to the event management group, riders and the coaches. We already have timing data from previous Probikx / Champbikx rounds and this can be used to accurately measure the performance of our athletes against times set by the Nation’s top athletes. This in itself is invaluable as a training tool and with the Athlete Development and Elite HP squads now in place, we have a great opportunity to improve our athletes in readiness for National and International competition”.

The Mylaps system enables riders and coaches to get accurate and consistent lap timing, enabling comparisons between all age groups to be far more accurate. Disputes on the finish line are also minimised with every rider getting an accurate time and the human error, although minor, is now all but eliminated.

Volunteers at events will also benefit as events no longer rely on pointers, catchers or bails recorders. This frees up the already overworked and limited volunteers.

Transponders will be available from the BMX WA office shortly at the introductory price of $135.00, a saving of $15.00 over the normal purchase price. This reduced price is only available until the end of October 2011. Transponders have a guaranteed 2 year life and an average life span of 5 years. For those not wishing to purchase their own transponder they will be available for hire at a cost of $10.00 per event.

All enquiries regarding transponders should be directed to the BMX WA office by phone or email. An order form for those wishing to purchase their own transponder will be available on the BMXWA website.

11/08 Goldcross Cycles BSX: Major prizes announced

by bmxultra.com
BSX (short for Bicycle Supercross, and is often referred to as Backyard Supercross) is a Royal Children’s Hospital fund raiser. It will be on again on Monday January 16, 2012 (during Track Attack). It will be the seventh running of the one on one backyard BMX race. BSX is the longest running event of it’s kind in the world and draws a large number of competitors from around Australia. The event has pulled a few international visitors and a number of Olympians.

Major prizes announced
Our naming rights partner Goldcross Cycles have just informed us the major prizes for BSX2012 are now ready for pick up! Yes that’s early, it’s still about 6 months away until the event, but they are about as excited about the next BSX as what we are.

So if you show up to the Goldcross Cycles BSX on Monday January 16, 2012 you can be in the running for the following prizes;

  • GT Speed series 20 XL bike
  • GT Power series JNR bike
  • GT Speed series frame 24”

So, you work out how you can get to BSX and we’ll work out how you can win.

Remember, you will have to be there to win!

Without the help of such generous partners BSX wouldn’t be possible. A big thanks to the Goldcross Cycles crew for all their support for BSX2012.

10/08 First year for Prophecy BMX at the Worlds and 2 Elite finals!

Prophecy BMX press release
On the last weekend of July the Elite and Junior World Championship took place at Copenhagen in Denmark with at the same time the world challenge for all the other categories….The track was great, fast with many huge jumps, a long rhythm section at the 3rd straight and impressive turns in which it was easy to make some moves.
So it was so great to watch all the riders perform, because on that kind of track qualification is never certain until the end.

For Prophecy BMX, it was the first time to have some Prophecy BMX frame on the gate of a World championship, and we were very proud to see all riders from our team but as well all others riders on our bikes! And we want to congratulate all riders for their performances during this extraordinary week of races…

Regarding the Prophecy BMX team, all our team riders was there and even if Henrik Baltzersen did not qualify out of the time trial Joey Bradford and Moana Moo-caille showed how fast their Scud carbon frames are.

Joey Bradford who had a bad crashed one week before the worlds during a training camp at the Olympic center in Chula Vista decided to come anyway to Denmark to compete at the worlds…It was a quite crazy decision when you know that Joey just gets time to pack his baggage after been out of hospital to fly to Copenhagen two days before the race!

But Joey impressed the entire crowd Friday during the time trial getting the first time until the second turn and slowing down at the 3rd straight to avoid crash and ensure qualification for the next day…Joey finished with a great 18th place at the time trial. Unfortunately the Saturday during the race he could not get a good start and did not pass the qualifications…

Moana Moo-caille, who finished in 40th place at Friday’s time trial, the perfect race on Saturday until the final. Unfortunately even if Moana got the perfect start during the final, he was between Sam Willoughby and Joris Daudet on the gate ramp and so brakes before the first jump…after coming back 7th Moana crashed alone at the last turn and finished 8th place. But Congratulation to Moana to offer to Prophecy BMX for its first year participation a final in Elite men!!!!

ELITE MEN
1. Joris DAUDET (France), 2. Maris STROMBERGS (Latvia), 3. Marc WILLERS (New Zealand), 4. Sam WILLOUGHBY (Australia), 5. Brian KIRKHAM (Australia), 6. Calors OQUENDO ZABALA (Colombie), 7. Connor FIELDS (USA), 8. Moana MOO CAILLE (Prophecy BMX, France)

Outside the official Prophecy BMX team, we want to congratulate two other riders who reached the finals.
First in Elite Women with Lieke Klaus who reached the final and finished to a great 4th place with her Scud carbon frame Pro XL….and in 9 years old category with Luke Rossiter finishing at the 7th place with his Scud Junior frame….

Sponsors: Prophecy BMX, Cycles evasion, Elevn, KMC.

BMXVictoria press release
The Eastfield BMX Club regrets to announce that this years Eastfield Experience, set for the 17th and 18th September will not be running on those dates.

The Eastfield Experience was a round of this year’s Dynamite Series, which will have to be moved to a different venue in order to wrap up the series at the State Titles.

Further announcements on this, and any new dates for the Eastfield Experience will be made as information is available once the Event Management Group and the Board have discussed these issues.

A thank you is due to Eastfield BMX Club for coming to an early decision on this, which makes it easier for people to plan ahead.

09/08 New Aussie BMX Mag

by Gary Winmill
G’day Racers,

After much thought over many months my wife and I have decided to start a new Aussie ZINE called BMX Racer. Let’s face it, there is a definite need for a brand new BMX racing magazine in Australia. BMX Racer will be A5 size, bi-monthly and full colour with plans to be even bigger and better in the future. The first issue of BMX Racer is due out November 2011 covering the QLD State titles and several other Aussie race meets. We hope to cover a minimum of 4-5 race meets per issue along with a stack of way cool regular features. BMX Racer will be available through our website (online soon) via single sales, subscriptions and an online version, from select BMX shops and any interested BMX clubs throughout Australia. Bike shops and clubs will share the same discounted price for quantity buys. If you, your shop or your club is interested in stocking BMX Racer please contact us on the email address below. Over the coming weeks we will be sending out info to prospective advertisers. If you are interested in advertising please contact us at info@bmxracer.net. Advertising is restricted to businesses servicing the BMX Industry.

We are looking for one person in each State to photograph race meets and write a short blurb about the meet. In larger states like QLD we are looking for more than one person. These are volunteer positions for the first 3 issues (crediting you in the zine) with a view to become a paid position from there.  If you are interested in these positions please email us at the address above and we will get back to you asap with more info.

We will be offering clubs a very fair price to advertise their race meets also. We hope this will encourage clubs to put a little more design consideration into their flyers to attract more racers to their events.

08/08 National BMX Hall of Fame 2011 Inductees Announced

ABA press release
On Thursday, September 29th, the National BMX Hall of Fame will add four more legends to its illustrious list of BMX racers, freestylers, pioneers and industry professionals. For the class of 2011, the inductees will be as follows.

Pioneer BMX Racer – Donny Atherton
As Schwinn’s marketing poster-boy throughout the late 70’s and early 80’s, Donny Atherton was one of the sport’s best-known amateur riders with a string of No.1 plates and titles in the NBA. In 1979, he was the NBA/Jag World Champion in 15 Expert, and he became the NBA’s No.1 Amateur in 1980. After turning professional, Atherton was named BMX Plus’ Rookie of the Year and in 1983 was ranked No.3 Pro in the American Bicycle Association. Riding for Schwinn throughout most of his career, Donny also represented classic brands such as Vector, Redline, Champion and ProFit. With constant coverage in the top magazines – including BMX Plus!, BMX Action and Super BMX, the name Donny Atherton was always in the spotlight – representing the sport in a positive and professional manner.

BMX Racer – John Purse
John “The Jackal” Purse started racing in 1981 at Armadillo Downs in Conroe, Texas. Little did he know from that day forward he would go on to be one of our sports all-time greatest. The Jackal has over 30 years racing experience, with 17 of those years racing at the professional level. After turning Pro at the ripe age of 17 (forging his mother’s signature in the process to do so), he won in his A-pro debut and jumped up to the AA-pro ranks in four months time. John has never been one to back down from anyone, at anytime, and his riding style reflected this as well. He would scrap for everything he got on and off the track. This led a fellow competitor – Eric Carter, to nickname him “The Jackal”. After struggling on the circuit for a few years, John began to win more steadily and won his first two No.1 Pro titles in the NBL in ‘95 and ’96. The following year, The Jackal would have his best year yet – claiming the UCI World Championships (in Canada), as well as the ABA National #1 Pro title. Following that season, with full support from Redline, John had the confidence and determination in 1998 to break the ABA record for “Most Wins in a Single Season” – standing on top of the podium 25 times in a single season. It’s one of his many career records that will be hard to beat. John is ranked second on the list of all-time AA Pro wins, with 71 ABA mains. He also holds the ABA record for most AA Pro Main appearances in a career – set at a remarkable 310. **He is the only Pro with over 300 lifetime mains. Add in his unrivaled accomplishment of popularity awards — 3 consecutive ABA Golden Crank Awards for “Pro of the Year” (`97, `98 and `99), BMX Plus! Pro of the Year (`98 and `99) & 1999 SNAP Magazine NORA Cup Rider of the year, and there is no doubt that he is deserving of this year’s Racer induction.

BMX Freestyler – Mike Dominguez
Without argument, SoCal ramp-God, Mike Dominguez, would always go bigger than anybody else in BMX Freestyle. In total, Dominguez’s career spanned ten years, and during that time he won all of the major titles– as both an amateur and then as the sport’s highest paid Pro. His resume includes everything from King of the Skateparks overall titles (as a 16x in 1983 and Pro in 1985); making him the youngest rider to ever win the KoS series. Riding for Hutch and then later on for Diamondback, Mike also took the AFA Masters title in 1987 in the ramp category. To earn those No.1’s, you’ve got to have some tricks up your sleeve, and Dominguez was always pushing the limits. He was the first to do the can-can, the no-footed can-can, 540’s, 900’s, 1-footed/1-handed inverts, and tailwhip flyouts. When you watch the Dew Tour or X-Games today, the roots of every vert, park and trail trick can likely be traced back to the groundwork laid by this year’s Freestyler inductee.

BMX Industry – Russ Okawa
Russ was originally introduced to BMX when he was hired as the manager of Canoga Schwinn bike shop. He formed the first Factory Schwinn team and as Team Manager, he picked up future National BMX Hall of Famers Kevin Jackson and Eric Rupe. With camera in hand, he was also a contributing photographer for Bicycle Motocross News, BMX ACTION and BMX Plus! magazines in their early days. He crossed over to Mongoose/BMX Products in 1980, under the title of Advertising and Promotions manager helping form the unstoppable Mongoose team; starring No.1 NBL Pro Eric Rupe. Russ put together freestyle team/promotions and mountain bike team/promotions for Mongoose throughout the 80’s and played a key part in the mountain bike success of John Tomac. In 1989, Okawa left Mongoose to work for Sachs/Sedis, in charge of Sales/Marketing which later led to a job with KMC chains. In 1997, Russ teamed back up with his old friend from Mongoose, Skip Hess Jr., who was president at Giant Bicycles. At Giant, he worked alongside BMX Hall of Famers Dave Clinton, Perry Kramer and Travis Chipres – and was influential in Giant Bicycles’ rise to becoming the leading brand of bikes in the world. Sadly, in January of this year, the sport of BMX lost one of its greats when Russ passed away. His induction this year will forever place his name and reputation in the history books.

BE A PART OF HISTORY!

04/08 Mariana Pajon Women’s Elite World Champion

by Bike Media
Mariana Pajon has created history by becoming the first Columbian to ever win a BMX Senior Elite World Championship. Pajon won the elite women’s title at the 2011 UCI BMX World Championships held in Copenhagen in early August. The 19 year old from Medallin took hold of the lead at the first corner and powered on to win the rainbow jersey.

In a display of strength and power Pajon won every lead up race to become a hot favourite to take out the final. Defending champion, Shanaze Reade (GBR), was eliminated in the semi final but current world number one, Sarah Walker (NZL) lined up beside Pajon in the final. Pajon blasted out of the gate overtaking Walker to win convincingly.

“My gate was awesome,” said Pajon still breathless after the race. ”It was great. My fastest gate.”

When asked how she felt about being the new World Champion Pajon said, “I don’t  know, I will have to wake up  tomorrow and then believe it!”

Since 2007 Pajon has been part of a unique programme called G4S 4teen which involves 13 other athletes from 13 countries. Athletes were selected to be part of a global team under the guidance of double Olympic Champion, Haile Gebrselassie. All the athletes in the program receive support and the opportunity of a lifetime, to achieve their sporting dream – to make it to London in 2012. Thanks to the support of the programme Pajon has been able to travel to more competitions, improve the quality of her kit and equipment and receive some valuable guidance from the team’s mentor, Gebrselassie.

Celebrations for the Columbian team and supporters started during the stirring rendition of the national anthem. A popular winner, Pajon was given her rainbow jersey by the UCI President, Mr Pat McQuaid. Although Pajon already had won a World Junior BMX Championship this elite title now gives her a huge advantage as she prepares for the next round of the BMX World Cup Supercross. The event will be held on the newly constructed BMX and will be a test event for the London Olympic Games.
