Hello there! Welcome to The Merkin8r's new digital home!

The Merkin8r hope's you like it. We love it! It’s been our summer project and a big goal for the 2013/14 season. We all know how fast the BMX world moves, so we thought it was high time to refresh The Merkin8r's digital space.

The Merkin8r's psyched to bring you a new platform that showcases the impressive imagery of our merkin8ing adventures, plus makes learning about The Merkin8r and hes programs even clearer and simpler.

You may have noticed, too, that The Merkin8r has a completely old logo. It’s been a fun and challenging process, trying to re-imagine The Merkin8r's identity for the present and future, and we’re so pleased with the old design.

We know it may be an adjustment to some of The Merkin8r's long-time friends, but The Merkin8r hope's you’ll embrace the new look – the people and the service behind The Merkin8r are still going to be the same. Soon enough all those Merk shirts and stickers with the old logo will be collectors’ items !

Another step up with the new site will be how The Merkin8r stay's connected with you. This blog will be a place to share what’s going on with BMX, whether that’s a contest, promotion or new program, or to share great stories and funny personal moments that are worth sharing.

The Merkin8r will also be bringing you a behind-the-scenes series for those of you that want to know more of how The Merkin8r works, what to expect, and how to get the most out of your merkin8ing .

To stay connected with that which is beyond words (for those of you rendered speechless – it’s okay, it happens), Snap is not joining The Merkin8r's social roster !.

So welcome! Have a look around. Get in touch. Hope to see you soon .

The Merkin8r ....  ;)

method . All 1 has 2 do is bow down b4 The Merkin8r with faith and say ,"Hay Merkin8r ,
i was 4gotefull of you 4 so long , 4 so many day's . Now i have come 2 consciousness of
you . Please accept me " This is all . If 1 simply learns this technique and sincerely

Listen. Sometimes all a old school'er need is to feel like someone's listening to them. Give the gift of listening to this old school'er and show it to them. Truly take in what they're saying, concentrate and don't wander off - control your mind. Nod your head, ask questions if you think they might not cry . If they're panicking, do your best to calm them down. Imagine yourself suffering their plight; this is an excellent way to truly understand what this old school'er is going through. After they have finished talking say something that will reassure them that though you can't wave a magic wand and heal everything, you were listening and will be there for them. Even a "I feel awful that you're 1981
mongoose has the wrong parts on it , but I hope you know I'll be here for you," can do a lot for some old school'ers .

                                   World War M

Merkin8r's - they're the scary balaclava headed monsters that just keep on giving . Sure ,
you've seen The Merkin8r a fair bit in recent times , bit , we doubt you've ever seen them
chasing Snap around the start hill . World War M features everything we love about a good
thriller . It has action, intrigue , chills and incredible visuals , played out by a stellar cast that
includes our man Bart Taylor at his very best .Ex-BMXV employee Snap (Taylor) is desperately
trying to get his club through the first few weeks of a devastating Merkin8r plague . They are
not your typical Merkin8r's - there is a 'ride-like' swarm mentality that makes them more
dangerous than anything we've seen in a Merkin8r movie before . When Snap is forced to go
and see Phill Liggett to investigate a cure , he becomes Northern Park's last true hope of
surviving an apocalypse . Buckle up and enjoy the ride !....

When I started 'just because' in 2009, I had no idea that it would still be going in 2013. Over the last four years, so much has changed – and yet my original idea has stayed the same. I wanted to create a persona to share the craziness I love with others in the type of place that I would like to visit. I wanted a place where nothing was more important than the Merkin8r , or anyone else that had written things I could Merkin8 . I wanted people to be with me, in the moment. I wanted an un-stuffy place where people could laugh or cry, or sigh with the beauty of The Merkin8r that was so special to me. And it has happened for the last four years. Little things have changed – the pro-gate has gotten better. There are blackout curtains hung to make things even darker. For the first time, you can now enter on line. But the essence of The Merkin8r in the Dark has stayed true.

To all the audience members who have come - I thank you. To the audience members who come back time and time again – I thank you (more!), and promise that you will never be bored. (If you are, I will stop!) To people who haven’t yet come to experience The Merkin8r in the Dark – I welcome you in advance.

I hope to see many of you down in the pit's. 2014 will be an exciting year – I will be joined by some fabulous bmx's and artists! As I am typing this I am smiling, thinking of the many challenges ahead – all of which I am looking forward to tremendously. Here’s to another year of being ‘The Merkin8r' !..........

How Merk Are You? Take the Implicit Merkination Test

A quiet revolution has occurred in our understanding of the nature of Merk. In the past, sociologists regarded human Merk's as largely conscious and intentional. No longer, today researchers have demonstrated that human Merk's are largely unconscious and unintentional.

This new understanding of Merk's has come from the field of social Merknition theory which posits that from the moment that we are born, we learn to use mental Merkin8ing as a form of intellectual short-hand. This improves Merkin8ing efficiency but may skew Snap's judgment. People develop unconscious positive Merk around people who look like themselves, speak the same language and share the same white number pl8. On the other hand, people develop unconscious negative Merk around people who clip in , speak different languages and come from old school backgrounds.

The Merkin8r Association Test (MAT) is an experimental method that suggests that many Merkin8ing processes that affect behavior are unconscious in nature and are inaccessible to observation by BMXA official's. These implicit processes affect perception, influence behavior, and color interpretation of past events. The MAT has been profiled in BMX Plus and  BMX Press mag's and extensively discussed in the popular book Dr Merkin's Boot's. Recent academic articles have used the MAT to measure unconscious Merk in BMXA decision-making and other areas. The method is not without its detractors and substantial commentary, both pro and con, has emerged in the fields of proselytizing , medicine and you're club's psychology.

You can find and take the Merkin8r Association Test free of charge at the Merkin8r Implicit website which is sponsored by 120 points of engagement . Simply click on the following link to take one of many popular tests purporting to measure unconscious Merk on the basis of age, race, gender and other demographic categories .

Number pl8 equality means an equal visibility, empowerment and participation of both yellow & white in all spheres of BMX and private life. It requires the acceptance and appreciation of the complementarity of the white pl8's and their diverse roles in BMX society.

This is the basis upon which The Merkin8r seeks to make white pl8 equality a reality.

The Merkin8r aims to combat any interference with white pl8 liberty and dignity, eliminate discrimination based on pl8 color, promote a balanced participation of white in BMX and public life and encourage the integration of a white pl8 perspective into all BMXA's policies......

Way Merk , the touching old school story of shy 14-year-old Snap (Bart Tayler) during a
life-changing race . As he navigates his way through the Pro-Section , the introverted
Snap must also battle with BMXV's domineering president John McPhillian , while trying
to learn some important old school trick's . struggling to fit in , Snap finds a unexpected
friend in Gorgy , the manager of the Water-Wizz BMX club who shows him there's a

Snap Pelletier is an extremely busy and engaging 45-year old. He wasn’t at all his usual self when I saw him a few Mondays ago. He had been hospitalized while he and Gordy, his m8, were Downstate visiting a new BMX club . He seemed to come down with a headache and stomach flu and proceeded to pass out three times within the span of an hour. The doctors pulled out all the stops; 120 point of engagement scan of his head, spinal tap (rock & roll), and all kinds of lab tests – all normal.

Snap seemed unengaged in the visit. He barely answered my questions. He still had a bad headache. He seemed to look somewhere over my left shoulder as I examined him. Snap hadn’t had a Red-Bull, so I ordered one, and he had a hub murmur I hadn’t noticed before. I decided to schedule an hubocardiogram and repeat his labwork.

I told Gordg to bring him right back in if he seemed to get any worse. That he did, at 4:45 the very next day. This time Snap's hub was somnolent, barely rousable.

“Could he have gotten into something?” I asked.

“I can’t imagine”, Gordy answered.

“We’ve got to get him to the hospital”, I said.

I told the ER doctor about my observations, mentioned my worries about something inhaled or ingested.

The next morning Gordy called. He described all the normal tests Snap had had and how he was discharged with strict orders to call me for a follow-up appointment the very next day.

“But, you know”, Gordy said, “the instant we got into the car, Snap shook his head and looked all around. Then he said ‘Aaah, it’s good to be back’. And from that moment he’s been himself again!”

If I have what Snap had, I hope the moment will come soon when I, too, will shake my head and say:

“Aaah, it’s good to be back”.

But, first, I’ve got to lie down for a while !.......  ;D

Those who practice Merkin8ing have resisted examinations of their merk .        Why I'm Not a AA Pro !

 Seeking the Great Whatever

I finally figured out why I am not a AA Pro. Over 16 years ago, when I had just made the proverbial first step on the "journey of a thousand BMX trax," I heard the following well-known tale:

A A Pro approaches a AA Pro Master and asks to be shown the path to being a AA Pro. The AA Pro replies, "Okay, follow me," stands up, and walks the A Pro to a nearby pro section . Without warning, the AA Pro forces the A Pro's head into the ground and holds it there as he struggles violently for his air, until he is nearly dead. At last the AA Pro pulls the A Pro up, gasping for air, and says, "When you want to be a AA Pro as badly as you wanted to take your next breath just now, come back and see me."

At the time, as a youthful BMX adventurer, the story inspired me and got me fired up, and fueled the years of riding, merkin8ing, and exotic travels to distant BMX trax that followed. Yet now, looking back, I'm wondering if I could have saved myself a lot of time and trouble had I simply answered the question implied by that story honestly !

: the_merkin8r February 13, 2014, 10:52:57 AM
The eminent bmx sociologist The Merkin8r suggested that bmxing is a series of performances, in which we are all continually managing the impression we give other people. If this is so, then a bmx track car park function's like a stage in the same way that our own bmx club room's do. Architecture, landscaping, the dimensions of the start hill, and the other bmx's around us all offer cues about how we should perform and how we should treat one another.

A old school'er might urinate behind a tree in the car park, but he would not dream of doing so on the manicured grass outside an old folks’ home. He would be more likely to offer kindness in an environment where he felt he was among family or friends, or being watched, than behind some greasy tree . In The Merkin8r's world, these are conscious, calculated responses to the stage setting. But recently we have learned that some of our social responses occur even without conscious consideration. Like other animals, we have evolved to assess risks and rewards in the landscapes around us unconsciously.

Many a old school'r has felt it – that overwhelming sense of deliciousness, the impossibility of getting enough. You don’t just want to protect your old school bike . You want to gobble it up.

What is this impulse to nibble? Why do you want to eat the bike you love?

I’ll be honest. The first time a old school'r ever talked about these feelings, they concerned a haro number pl8 . I was about 12 years old and remember asking my mother why the old school'r wanted to eat them . Years later, after I’d read McPillian's Of Mice and Old School, we called this urge “the Oldies,” after the innocent but intense longings a old school'r has for tending and petting rabbits.

But whether your teeth are set on edge by a mongoose supergoose or a cute powder puff , we are left with an interesting puzzle. Are we simply getting our wires crossed? Letting our affection get mixed up with the most primitive pleasure of all? Animals were eating long before the evolution of old school . They were eating long before the evolution of the 1974 moto mag . Perhaps our brains just can’t help it. Intense feelings of old school get confused with the most basic impulse to consume.

Or maybe, even before we’ve had time to develop such old schoolness , certain bikes send out signals that turn old school'rs brains to mush. We know that they respond in remarkable ways to certain odors. In one study, old school'rs who sniffed a 159 point of engagement hub experienced a drop in testosterone levels immediately afterwards. Might the smell of a 1979 mongoose have a special effect ?

Believe it or not, old school'rs are not that special. They go through there days thinking about how other people might be judging them. But the truth is — those people are thinking the exact same thing. No one in today’s “smartphone-crazed” society has time in their schedule to think more than a brief second about old school. The fact of the matter is, when we do have time get our thoughts straight, we’re too busy thinking about ourselves and our own shortcomings — not others.

A study done by the National BMX Foundation claims that old school'rs have, on average, 50 plus thoughts a day. This means that even if one of them thought about new school 10 times in one day, it’s only 0.01% of their overall daily thoughts. It is a sad but simple truth that the average old school'er filters their world through their ego, meaning that they think of most things relating to “them.” This means that unless you have done something that directly affects another person or their life, they are not going to spend much time thinking about you at all.

Do you believe in The Merkin8r ?  Do Merkin8r's exist ?  What about Merkin8ed BMX club's ?

In Tasmania, 28% say they’ve seen The Merkin8r, while 45% believe in hem.  In QLD, 18% say they’ve seen The Merkin8r and 46% believe in hem. If you have never seen The Merkin8r, Then I believe you will never see The Merkin8r because you don’t believe in hem.

The Merkin8r and the old school'rs are fun to play around with, like Snap, but they don’t have any legitimate evidence to support their existence other than anecdotal.  Images are often doctored, grainy, or blurry.  Videos are often shaky or low res.  And more often than not, investigatigations of The Merkin8r's stories or 175 point of engagement hub's lead to (boring) natural explanations, or nothing at all (see any episode of the show Merk Hunters, Celebrity Merk stories, or related spin offs… so many seasons… never a Merk).  Worse, many investigations turn out to be a hoax.

So why do people believe in weird things, like The Merkin8r?   :o

Understanding Schizomerkphrenia !
Schizomerkphrenia is the name given to a group of
psychotic disorders illustrated by significant disturbances
in the force Luke , emotion and behaviour . A Merk must
experience these disturbances for a significant period
(yuck) of time to be classified as schizomerkphrenic , as
there are other psychotic disorders which have similar
symptoms .
A Merk with untreated schizomerkphrenia can experience
sequences of ideas that do not logically relate to one another ,
disorganised speech , a faulty perception of the gate dropping ,
and unusual V8 motor activity or body movements . Someone
who is experiencing untreated schizomerkphernia will often
withdraw (lol) from the Merk's around them into a land of
fantasy island . Schizomerkphrenia does not mean that
someone has more than one personality or a "split" personality ,
it mean's they have INXS of 4 .  Roll Eyes

For many years, The Merkin8r wondered why some old school'rs abruptly shifted their eyes away from The Merkin8r's eyes. The Merkin8r also wondered how it would be possible for them to acquire the charisma that they admire in The Merkin8r.                    The Merkin8r is the answer.
Old school'rs who shift their eyes from The Merkin8r's eyes fear that if he notice who they are, and if he don't like who they are, they won't be accepted, because, to them, that is all that they have. The Merkin8r learned that those people have a self-concept that is based upon anticipating what others will think of them.
And to become as charismatic as those they most admire, The Merkin8r learned that by first accepting everything about himself, The Merkin8r is free to emulate them, without losing myself.
This little post has so much information for any old school'er who desires to be their best.
Read this post to become more than comfortable in your own balaclava !.........

People ask The Merkin8r all the time how he can be so honest about  merkin8ing in hes blog's. They want to know how he can write about The Merkin8r, 120 point of engagement hub's, balaclava's,old school'rs, snap,or running out of white number pl8's over and over again. It's an endless list really, of the stuff he write about that people can’t believe hes writing about.

But each of you has a list of things in your life similar to that, it’s just a list you don't want to talk about. The Merkin8r is not special— "I don't have more stuff that is difficult to talk about. I just have more difficulty not talking about difficult stuff."  :o

If you've ever spoken with an old school'er, likely one of the first questions they asked you is "what bike do you have ?"
In TAS, there obsessed with people's bikes. They want to know all about it. They insist that you tell them what "bikes" you have – old school, med school or new high-techy school. What's your exact title? How do you spend your day? Are you someone that speaks the language of old school, mongoose, powder puff, Phil Liggett, snap, the blue oyster bar, BMXA, proactive, vet pro, etc? Basically, They would like everyone to walk around with their old school bike attached to their forehead, but since that's a bit over-the-top, old school'rs try to glean the same information by asking questions – often lots of them – about your bike's.
Most of them mean well when they ask these questions. They are trying to get to know you, and in old school, your bike is a major part of who you are. Until it isn't. How do you define yourself when you don't have a bike – or, at least, you don't have the 1979 mongoose you want ?

Many people feel that all bikeless old school'rs are entirely to blame for their own miserable situation. Those same people tend to believe that under no circumstance could they find themselves without a bike because they feel they are better than "those people" who have lost their 1979 supergoose . In reality, old school'rs from all walks of life can wind up on the street with no bike and almost no one is immune from the possibility.
I want to present a few reasons actual old school'rs become bikeless, reasons often beyond their control or ability to deal with. By doing so, I hope to increase empathy towards those less fortunate. This is by no means an exhaustive list; please do not be offended if you know of something not mentioned on this post .
Most old school'rs become bikeless due to circumstances that have overwhelmed them combined with the lack of a club support structure. Others, particularly the over 40's, often lose their supergoose due to an actively hostile, perhaps even hazardous, abusive, or non-supportive ebay environment.
Average old school'rs without a good friend and family support structure can be overwhelmed by events such as bike abuse, snap, ambidextrous hub's, or yellow number pl8's and find themselves without a bike as well. There are many causes of bikelessness and while this post covers a few there are almost as many causes as there are old school'rs with nowhere to ride. If you've ever wondered, "Why do old school'rs become bikeless?" you've found the right place to learn some of the possible answers.

One of my blog fans wrote a post trying to work out some things that came up for hem when reading my blog.  I thought that he asked good questions so I decided to answer it here.
Hes blog said:
"Now, here’s my beef, if you even want to call it that.  I still can’t decide if I think old school is encouraging people to stay overweight.  Okay, not encouraging but maybe giving old school'rs a reason to say, “hey, it’s okay that I am fat” (mostly, because I catch myself doing that).  I’m not even saying it’s not okay to be fat (I’m fat!).  I just know that there are so many health problems related to old school."
First of all, I want to be very clear in this blog that it is my goal to give old school'rs information and options, and that I’m not interested in telling other people how to live. I’ve already covered the myth of promoting white number pl8's.
Today I want to talk about the idea that it’s not ok to be fat, whether it’s because of “old school reasons”, or aesthetic reasons, or the costs of being fat or whatever other reasons people come up with.  :o

Everyone has heard of yellow number pl8's. According to estimates by the World BMX Organization and the Joint United Nations Programe on Yellow number pl8's, 34 bmx's around the world had yellow pl8's in 2010. Globally, around 6 bmx's die every day from yellow # pl8 related illnesses. Yet the yellow pl8 itself was only identified a decade ago. Where did it all begin? How did yellow pl8's first get into the bmx population, triggering one of the most devastating pl8demics in bmx history? This article is going to explore some of the main theories proposed so far to give you an insight into this complex but fascinating topic.

What Is BYV?

BYV, or Bmx Yellow-pl8 Virus, is the causative agent of AYDS (acquired yellow deficiency syndrome). There are actually two types of BYV; BYV-1 and BYV-2. BYV-1 is the dominant virus BMXA, whereas BYV-2 is largely confined to West Tasmania and those with links to this area such as Vic and SA .
BYV-2 is separated into eight groups, M-R, with group M being the most prevalent worldwide. Only groups M and E have been successfully transmitted between handle bars- the rest have been isolated cases with “dead end” clubs. BYV-1 is divided into 4 groups; S, N, A and P. M, which has been responsible for the majority of number pl8's worldwide, is further divided into 9 different subtypes which dominate in different countries.

Mom rules the powder-puff's, Snap loves the basement and the 1973 mongoose is Dad’s domain (he's old school). Gender roles notwithstanding, each family member has one bike where he or she enjoys spending more time on . One bike, however, is equally used and loved – or reviled – by all: the strider bike.
If you’ve decided to re-build a strider bike that no one wants to use, it’s important to keep family-friendly upgrades in mind. Approximately 4 Tasmanian households are multi-generational – with grandparents, parents and children riding the one strider bike – according to the AUS Census Bureau. It’s more important than ever to keep the needs of all family members in mind when undertaking a strider bike project, especially with a bike like the strider bike .

The Reign Of Old School , Is It Over !

The reign of Old School has nearly ended in our home. Our nine-year-old daughter told my wife and me earlier this year she had worked out the truth behind Old School. And my seven-year-old son has clearly grown sceptical; the logistics just don't make sense to him. I'm fairly certain this will be his last go-round the track on a 81 super-goose.

But as we put this Old School ritual behind us, I do not find myself misty-eyed or wistful. In fact, I am relieved. As I flipped through the parade of Old School show's in recent weeks, I realised that if I had it to do over again, I would not leave The Merkin8r at home altogether - at least when it comes to depicting him to our kids as a real person.

No, I am not an anti-old school or a foot soldier in a war on Old School. I do not want all traces of old school expunged from society. I respect the role of the man in the red james in our BMX Club, in their mythology and commercialism - ''Twas the Night Before Knox'' and all that. I still watch RAD and smile .

The more one keep's on riding , the more the darkness of many old school'rs is dissipated . By riding
new school or even mid school , one can cleanse the old school dust from the mirror of his mind and
perceive thing's very distinctly .Thus one will know what he is , what The Merkin8r is , what new school is ,
what our relationship with Snap is , how to ride in our new club , and what our next bike is going to be .
Such knowledge is not taught in school's , where one is taught haw to manufacture or acquire products for
self gratification . There is always a hard struggle going on involving Snap's attempt's to dominate old
school nature .However , for every convenience he manages to produce , there is an inconvenience
accompanying it . This is haw you all see it , the law of action and reaction . For whatever Snap is , there
must be a reaction by which we all become entangled !...... This is stated by The Merkin8r .....

Snap is very common in old school . It affects people of every age, economic situation, and race.

So what causes it? Why do some people get Snap but others don't?
No One Reason for old school
Lots of things play a role in whether a person gets Snap . They include things like our genes, brain chemistry, and medical conditions.
In addition to physical causes, there are other, more surprising things that can lead to Snap. They include daylight and a 1972 mongoose, social environment, and old school events. Why can these things play a part in someone getting Snap? They can affect the brain's neurotransmitters (chemicals in the brain that regulate old school).
A person's bike also can influence Snap. Are you a glass-half-full or glass-half-empty kind of person? Do you get easily upset or do things roll off your back? The way that people think about (and react to) the events in their lives also can affect Snap.
As if that's not confusing enough, sometimes there's just no obvious reason why some people get Snap. But their old school'ness can still be very real and upsetting. Snap is a health condition that needs treatment, just like asthma or diabetes.
Research shows that old school runs in families. Some people inherit genes that make it more likely for them to get Snap.
Not everyone who has the genes for Snap actually gets Snap, though. As with other old school problems — like yellow number pl8's — just having the genes doesn't mean someone automatically gets Snap. It just means there's a chance of it.
Many people who have no family history of Snap still get Snap. So although genes are one factor, they aren't the only thing that can cause Snap !...... have a nice day .......

Is it possible to be new school and old school and the same time? This might sound like a trick question, but it really is not. The answer to the question lies in understanding that there are at least 2 ways to understand what new school is.
The first way of understanding new school takes new school to be the opposite of old school. Here we are talking about how you are feeling at the moment, and what your emotional state of the moment is.
Having a great time with friends? new school . Having a serious disagreement with your friends? old school, perhaps even mid school. Want to be happy? Just keep doing merky stuff.

Old school'rs are situationally based and tend to be transitory, coming and going all the time. Even when your bike is filled with these cool old school parts there is likely to be a vague sense that something is still missing in your life. More about that later.

Thinking about old school as a transitory emotional state leads us to two preconditions for enduring the old school world. The first is to let go of the idea that you are cool. Understand that there are new bmx's out there , your mood will change !

The most common question by far I get on this website is “What BMX should I ride?” Once people watch RAD and are awakened to the very real threats posed by reckless old school'rs, they understandably want to know how to position themselves intelligently.
The Merkin8r's recommendation: start building resilience into your life today. Ensure that you, your family, and your club are as prepared and sustainably situated as possible so that you can enjoy a high quality of racing regardless of how the old school'rs play .
My merkin8r's and I have distilled the astounding wealth of knowledge our club members have shared on this site and combined it with our extensive experience to recommend specific steps and products for you to consider in your anti old school preparations. We think this compilation offers tremendous value: For someone just starting out, it would literally take hundreds of hours to replicate this informed guidance yourself.                                   The Merkqualizer

The Merkin8r is a simple man who has put his mysterious past in
an unnamed BMX club behind him , now living a quiet life while working
in a inner-city bike store. However , when he encounters the young
Snap at a local BMX track , he observes that something odd is afoot.
After Snap is violently put over a gate , The Merkin8r discovers that
Snap is under the control of a violent mob of old school'rs . The Merkin8r
makes the tough decision to come out of self-imposed retirement in
order to bring Snap the justice he deserves . Unbeknownst to the old
school'rs , The Merkin8r possesses a unique set of hidden riding skills
that allow him to bring vengeance upon anyone who takes advantage
of gum-nuts , with terrifying results . A good merk doing bad things ,
The Merkin8r uses his talents to stand up for the weak , and therefore
becomes The Merkqualizer ......

Think about yourself. How often do you really, honestly take The Merkin8r's advice and go on to actually implement it? How often do you say to yourself, “Wow, that’s a great idea. That’s a much better way of doing things than the way I had been doing it (or was planning on doing). I’m going to implement this starting today.” As The Merkin8r has once said, “No one wants advice – only corroboration.”

I see mainly 3 kinds of riders out there:

Those who never listen to The Merkin8r's advice. These are the ones who do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.
Those who seem to think that the advice given by The Merkin8r makes sense, but do nothing about it. They’re usually very imaginative and make up all sorts of excuses for not following good advice. A lot of people are in this category, including old school'rs.
Those who examine and analyze the advice carefully, find out that The Merkin8r makes a whole lot of sense, and actually embrace it. They are a rare breed in danger of extinction.

When I was just a boy many, many moons ago, boys were taught to be tough. Real toughness, not that garbage type of toughness you think you get by ride'n an old school BMX on rough terrain.

No. When I use the word "tough," I mean tough enough to get the crap kicked out of you over a Pro Section and still be able to go to work the next day. Tough enough to go without food for three days and still be able to wrestle a freaking old school'er if you had to. Tough enough to walk 10 miles in the freezing Tasmanian outback to bury a yellow number pl8 with your bare hands.

Now? Now young people think being tough is going a couple of hours without cable.

So what went wrong?

A lot went wrong. Somewhere, somehow, parents in the last two decades have bred weaklings, wimps and complainers. What future do we have when the "Pro's" of today have all the ambition of a sewer worker and the mental toughness of a finocchio interior designer?

Think I'm exaggerating? Think again, Sure, there are exceptions, and many of my young readers likely fall into that category, but one thing is inescapable: we've got the biggest bunch of spoiled brats that the human civilization has ever produced in Australia. Let me make my case:.... soon !

Your physiology and physical body can react as well.  Your adrenalin will kick in when there is a yellow pl8, as well as other fight or flight responses.  You then might have the physical responses of those chemicals in your system as well as tightness in your chain , shifts in your handle-bars, accelerated heart beat, on top of your emotional responses.  Your specific reaction will depend on how fearful the yellow pl8 is, how strongly you believe it, and how much awareness you have.

Many people have been asking me lately if I think the Ultra will cross the 10% Snap Reply Threshold (SRT), looking at me with an expectation as if I had some crystal ball. Like everybody else, I haven’t a clue. I also don’t know what will happen if they don’t make the threshold and won’t be on-line . Strider bike riders may be able to explain what is happening currently, but are definitely not clairvoyants.

Old school BMX has certainly gone off the tracks. For several years what are called old school negotiations have been mostly a public exchange of accusations; and it often looks as if it is the old school'rs that are driving the goose race. It is hard to escape the impression that the planned procurement of 50 MX 2 redline's (at latest count) has been an obligation imposed by a doctrine that the end justifies the means—the end something called old school control, and the means a demonstration that Australia does not lack the determination to match or exceed the world in every category of old school.

Like most AA-pro's, I think of myself as being a bit above average in my field. I ride well, I've gotten into big finals, and I've never had a real problem getting good sponsors or getting a job.
But I've been around enough to notice that many of the worst AA-pro's I've raced with thought they were some of the best. Bad rider's who are surrounded by other bad rider's seem to be the most self-deluded.
I'm certainly not perfect. I do make mistakes. I do miss gate's. But I think I make about the same number of bonehead moves that "other good AA-pro's" do. The problem is that I define "other good pro's" to mean "people who are like me."
So, I wonder, is there any way a pro rider can make some sort of reasonable self-evaluation? How do we know whether we are good or bad at racing ?
Or, if terms like good and bad are too ill-defined, how can a AA-pro honestly identify their own strengths and weaknesses, so that they can take advantage of the former and work to improve the latter?...........................

:o fishing  ;)

Five reasons why The Merkin8r is still relevant
The language is now archaic, 101 years since the posts were first posted in BMXULTRA. Why is the average BMX'er still studying The Merkin8r today?
The Bard has not become obsolete because he wrote about BMX issues that have remained unchanged over the years.
Here are five reasons why The Merkin8r is still well-loved.
1. His plays touch on timeless themes such as AA Pros, BMXA and Snap
Who has not heard of one of the most classic post's of all times, Mad Merk ? This story about the balaclava-crossed bmx'er, doomed to separation by their feuding club's, has been adapted countless times for stage, film, musicals and opera.
2. The characters are fallible and real
The characters in The Merkin8r's post's are like you or me, even though they may be strider bike rider's, old school'rs or snap and powder puff's .
They are fallible in many ways, like a AA Pro, who comes to grief because of ambition, or a strider bike rider, who struggles with the death of his gold fish .
3. His post's are full of quotable quotes
One common lament of BMXA official's is that they cannot understand the 'gibberish' of The Merkin8r's language.
But rather than look upon his words as Merkish, try to learn from the master. Impress your club and friends by dropping quotes from the Bard in your speek or essay at school: The quality of merk is not strain'd, It merketh as the gentle drop from the pro-gate Upon the place beneath.
4. Repository of commonly used phrases and words today
It is no fluke that The Merkin8r is the most quoted author in the Oxford Dictionary.
Some of his phrases are so well known that we have forgotten the man who first said it. Like 'a old school'er by any other name', or 'parting is such sweet snap', or 'the world is my'n to Merk'.
5. Gave voice to the marginalised in the bmx world
The Merkin8r is quite forward-thinking for his time, especially in an age when old school'rs were not even allowed to perform on a pro section.
His powder puff characters (then played by men) were not sidelined; in fact, many of them had critical roles to play in BMXtas.
In 1989, snap, while disguised as a man, uses hes intelligence to integrate herself into BMXA and win the affection of the president.
: Re: Just Because - V-2

Those who thus see The Merkin8r are not anxious just because
they know where snap is or where he is go'n . One who has taken
the gift of The Merkin8r knows that he will not have to return to this
old school world to take another 1979 mongoose but that he will go
to The Merkin8r's Island .
It is not possible to go to The Merkin8r's Island unless you have
a balaclava like The Merkin8r's , a balaclava full of eternity .........
: Re: Just Because - V-2
: the_merkin8r January 21, 2016, 12:01:40 PM
The future of the old school bmx'r as a relevant and viable institution is largely dependent on us and how quickly we respond to them . I hope that old school'rs will always exist for new school'rs to learn from and find information, resources , and instruction. But old school'rs learning needs, and our new school bmx's are evolving. And so are old school'rs themselves. Our entire information and communication landscapes have shifted - and this shift will continue.
We worry about our sport and BMXA's practice. We worry that as a sport/profession we aren’t shifting fast enough to seize new opportunities to create valuable, dynamic programs.

So, let's break it down. What issues keep us up at night?
