Injuries before the Worlds
« on: July 10, 2009, 12:34:04 AM »

I am very devastated to bring you some bad news from our racing family tonight, my son Andrew (16) was just having a few laps at our track today just rolling and pumping, taking it easy when he was blown sideways off a jump he has ridden 1000’s of times. I just took a pic before his bike was pushed by a huge gust of wind which just tilted his bike before landing.........the result was a compound break of the humorous bone.

This is the first major injury of a 12 year career of racing and as he says & I know,  has worked hard & dedicated  his life to get to the worlds, this year he has got a 2 QLD plates & a 3rd at this years Aussies. It has been the saddest day of my BMX life knowing that he now will miss his dream, it was even worse when he came out of 3 hours of surgery and in his drugged state apologised for wasting our money & time........this is hard to write as I’m sure you can imagine especially with 4 large rods sticking out of his arm. He will be required to go into further surgery within 10 days where they will insert 2 steel plates to join the bones together.

Unfortunately this also might mean that I will not be able to film at the worlds this year, and I apologise if I can’t be there to film as I know many have already asked if I will be. We will have to wait and see if I can make it down, but this is a fair way off at the moment. Obviously my main concern is Andrew as I’m sure you all agree.

And on a lighter note........as you all know my camera’s never too far away.........I’m sure Andrew will approve here is some pics.

Andrew & Macey the jump before

The jump that did it, a split second before landing........he knew at this stage something wasn't right

At hospital, compound evident

Gorey that truly sucks. Wishing your son a speedy recovery and hope that he's not too hard on himself. So close and yet so far. Our thoughts are with you as I know how devastated you all must be, not just Andrew but your whole family.

Tracey-Lee, Mark and Macey and the recovering Andrew too

All our thoughts and best wishes.

BMX can be / is that kind of sport. I know it well . . . .  China 2008 was a sudden "no go" - also a quick "accident" doing a training lap at our local track.  None of this will really make it better but please do know we are thinking of you and wish Andrew all the best for a speedy recovery.

Truly heartbreaking for you Gorey  Cry  Best wishes and a speedy recovery from those of us up North.

Ronnie Dugdell (Cairns) had a very nasty crash at the QC's last weekend...shattered his elbow and broke his ankle.  Had surgery Sunday night and is home recovering now.  He still walked off the track which is pretty unbelievable.  Joseph Costa also fractured his ankle in Cairns whilst training a couple of weeks ago.....breaks the heart  Embarrassed

So sorry to hear about this mate, i'm sure Andrew is devastated as probably the whole family is. Please don't worry about missing out on filming the worlds, you look after your own first and foremost.

What a horid situation. Having missed both the '07 and '08 Nationals due to injury myself, I can understand Andrews dissapointment.
All the best to him for a speedy recovery. He's still only a young bloke so he'll bounce back from this.

Many thanks from all of us for the well wishes for Andrew, he has the laptop and has read them all and truly appreciates all your support. It is a very sad time for the family as it would be for any families that had this happen as well, especially the Costa & Dugdell families, and our hearts go out to them too.

The latest news is that Andrew will staying in hospital until Tuesday when hopefully he will undergo surgery again to put in the titanium plates & fingers crossed he will be able to leave by Friday next week.

Here's a pic taken this morning showing the rods.......(I wonder what brand & vintage of wine the corks are from Roll Eyes

Andrew clowning around, mind you he was a bit confused at the start as he whispered "hey DAD I'm seeing clowns" I just told him it's the morphine and they're just emptying his colonoscopy bag Wink

There still might be a chance that we all can make it, Tracy-Lee & Macey will definately be going but depending on Andrew I mighten as yet.

Thanks again everyone
