Tech question
« on: December 08, 2006, 01:01:08 PM »

I have recently bought a 20"and i am looking at changing the gearing to the same ratio as my cruiser. If I run a 29-10 this is close but just wondered if there are any downsides to running small gears as I can also get the ration close running larger on both. Any advantages or disadvantages? I saw a 20" at the Vics that was running something pretty small, its only a looks thing.

First question, how old and tall are you?

I myself ran 25-9, i kept breaking chains, then went to 27-10, this ran well for a couple a couple of meets then the chain and chain ring wore out within 3 meets.

Good things are the ratio and it feels easier and i reckon you get up to speed a bit faster and are able to keep the rpm up.

Downside is the replacing of parts.

I now run 35 or 36 - 13 which is really good, small gear with out wearing any of the parts out.

Mind you, i was in full training and very strong when i ran those little gears.

I would only suggest 9 or 10 on the rear if your 15 and under.

I think you caught him out munchkin as he changed his original post. 45/14 would be OK with 185 cranks!

I used to run 46/16 on my 20", on 175 cranks, and I didn't even have an Austrian accent.  Roll Eyes
