Olympic Qualification - heating up
« on: May 20, 2011, 09:28:06 AM »

Olympic berths are determined by the Nations ranking based on points scored by it's top 3 riders.

The qualification period ends at the 2012 Worlds....

The race for points comes really heats up with 3 high scoring races 3 weeks apart and within 500km....

5 - 6/5/12        Continental Championships Paris-Le Bourget FRA Class 3
11 – 12/5/12   UCI BMX Supercross World Cup Papendal NED Class 2
23 – 27/5/12   UCI BMX World Championships Birmingham GBR Class 1

Continental Championships are open to all nations...

Additionally in April, there's a Supercross round squeezed between NZ Nationals and Oz Nationals
7 - 8/4/12        NZ BMX National Championships NZ Class 6
13 - 14/4/12    UCI BMX Supercross World Cup TBC Class 2
21 - 22.4/12    Australia BMX National Championships AUS Class 6

Really hope Oz gets that SX round.....

Hey G

Any idea how they make up the rest of the quota. By that Math we end up with 24 men and 11 women.
Also I heard that part of the selection process for Aus riders meant that they had to compete at the Aus titles this year?

Hey Craig,

For the Olympics there are 32 men places and 16 women places.

There are two qualification criteria + host and commission places.

For men...24 qualify through nations points (criteria 1)

6 qualify through 2012 Worlds placing (criteria 2 - nations not qualified through nations ranking) + 1 host nation spot + 1 commission spot....

If the host nation qualifies through criteria 1 or 2 then it becomes an extra spot....

Watch out for Kelvin Batey qualifying for Ireland under criteria 2.....he did this for GB in 2008 but GB gave the spot to Liam Phillips

For Women...11 qualify through nations points (criteria 1)

Only 3 qualify through 2012 Worlds placing + 1 host nation spot + 1 commission spot....

Rumour is that ABA Champ Domique Daniels has swapped to Peurto Rico to attempt to qualify for the Olyumpics in one of the 3 criteria 2 spots.

Seems that GB are relying on their host spot position.......GB are not in the nations ranking and didn't send any riders to the last SX round......Liam Phillips is injured but GB are not funding Marcus Bloomfield

Selection criteria states:

"An athlete who competes at a SX UCI category 2 event or higher that conflict with Nationals, or is scheduled either a week prior or after, will be granted exemption."

As in my first post....there is an SX event one week before nationals....

2011 selection criteria:

Seems like a lot of money and infrastructure for only 48 people to compete at the Olympics.

Seems like a lot of money and infrastructure for only 48 people to compete at the Olympics.

GB has been spending heavily on the Olympics (not just BMX)...from Money week

"Funding for athletes with realistic medal chances has jumped from £59m ahead of Sydney in 2000 to £70m in 2004 to £235m for Beijing. The extra cash started to pay off in Sydney, where Great Britain collected 28 medals (including 11 golds)........

As Chancellor, Gordon Brown announced an unprecedented £500m public sport investment for 2012 in the 2006 Budget – £300m from the lottery and another £200m from the taxpayer.
"

That was when the GBP was worth alot more too.....

Oh and a significant percentage of budget is used flying horses around to compete in Equestrian events.....
