CLIPS TO BE BANNED FOR UNDER 12s (Rumour)

This is not official......but rumour on the GB BMX forum that Clips will be banned for Under 12s....

UEBMX, who coordinate European Championship Series, already have this rule in place (for some time).

The French bans clips for under 14s.....GB have banned clips for under 16s....


As of 1st July, Ms Ellen Bollansée will occupy the position of BMX Coordinator at the International Cycling Union (UCI). She will replace Mr Johan Lindstrom.

The suggestion is the new BMX Coordinator will drive this change.

Anyone know anything officially?

Understand where you are all coming from, but they are purely looking at it from a safety perspective......although that is debatable.

great idea, it will make kids develop their skills first.  The amount of kids doing clip lifts over jumps is not only ugly but dangerous!! I hope they bring it in

You will see more injuries not clipped . Does this mean they will do it in all forms of cycling MTB, Road , track etc.............Not likely. Why is it always a step back? Move forward people .

Wow, did not think there would be so much emotion on a topic like this (and it's only a rumour).

Maybe some of you guys could fill me in on this topic. I have only been involved in the sport for a few years and have 2 boys that ride (one who chooses to ride on flats and the other chooses to ride in clips) and I am no expert when it comes to riding a BMX bike, in other words i have no idea if it would be a good or bad thing to ban clips.

Some of you guys are clearly for it and some are clearly against, but what are the pro's and con's, (other than saying it's good or it's bad, which does not inform anyone)

The only against for me is... kids can learn to ride a bike correctly or maybe better.There are kids out there that can jump a 4 metre double but cant bunny-hop a gutter.

Its good to swap between both. Do some of your training on flats and clips. My kids race clipped in and its good for control. Nothing worst than seeing a kid slip a pedal, loose control and take other kids out. My kids also ride Retro bikes so they get plenty of both even if my daughter hates it. Clips are the future in all forms of cycling even BMX and downhill MTB where flats are now the rarity. . Teach the kids to maximise every bit of the pedal stroke even pulling up.

What about making it a progressive thing where once they demonstrate certain techniques and skills on flats they progress to clips.

If they are technically proficient then the risk of injury is mitigated to a large extent.

I also agree with a comment made above with regard to their use in all froms of cycle sport.  Its pointless banning them in BMX but allowing them in all other forms of cycle sport.  Just moves us backward.

Did anyone notice how many french riders were in the finals on sbs the other night? Did growing up not riding clipless pedals affect the french? I think quite the opposite. And french has had their ban in affect for a while.
