DX Clipless pedals - issues and opinions
« on: March 19, 2012, 11:23:27 PM »

It was suggested that I try the Shimano DX clip pedals on the boy's race bikes because they had a good surface area for their feet and they were BMX specific.

I have to constantly tighten the right side pedal and there seems to be a lot of movement in the cage of the pedal.

I am getting a creaking sound from their bikes which sounds like BB noise but I have stripped the bikes and greased the BB and the bracket themselvs and re-installed it all again! These bikes are only a month old if that!

Could these pedals be the cause of the creaking or should I look at another issue?

Has anyone had similar experiences with these pedals!

I used the DX pedals on Mitch's bike for one race meet and he didn't like them he said there was to much movement in the right pedal and didn't like the feel of them at all, didn't hear any creaking though, he now has the Shimano XTR Clips and absolutly loves them.

Hope you work out the problem Huh

Light hit with silicone spray keeps the creaks away and does not increase risk of pulling out.

If you are looking for cageless pedals the kids have been running these for well over 12 months and have not had 1 issue with them, check the weight!!

Thanks Jaythyn, but the kids are after bigger pedals as they need more surface area to increase power output. The cageless pedals dont allow for this and are more Cross Country MTB orientated. Have been down that road in the past and moved away from them. Thanks anyway.

My daughter has the new XTR Trail pedals and loves them, but they too are a little small for the boys who both have big feet, 44 and 46 Euro. We have used the cheaper shimano pedals and they have a very short life expectancey with BMX and the rigors of it! They are designed as a entry level MTB free ride pedal.

May need to just keep searching for the best options

We run Shimano DX as well and never have any issues and they have been on the bikes since 2009, all I do is clean them when I clean the bikes and adjust as needed. I found servicing them regularly (applying lube etc...) shortened the life span, leave them alone and they seem to last.

I have been through 3 pairs in the last year and half or so.  I tighten the clips to the max when i get them then they gradually loose strength to the point where I may as well run flats becasue I'm clipping out so much.  Changing the cleats helps a bit.

Next pedals i get will be somthing else.

Biggest platform clip pedal on the market is the Crankbrothers Mallet C. If it is all about power transfer than you can't go past road pedals and road shoes. All though after talking to my friend at the AIS on Sunday the shoe is far more important than the pedal. Run a full carbon soled road shoe and the pedal size is not important.

Kids run the SIDI Dragon 2 shoes which are a full carbon sole. Will see if I can work out the issue and go from there. The Shimano trail pedals are looking good right now as they will shave 150grams off the bike and as I have not had any issues with Mikayla's bike, might be the way to go then if that is the case Hearnie!

Thanks all for your feedback, it is appreciated.  Wink

Seems to be the go Bonzai. I guess thats why the preferred shoe in the peleton is carbon but the pedals can vary in size dramatically. Its all about the shoes Smiley I guess along as there is no flez in the pedal axle power transfer is not an issue. The trail option in the shimano range offers that little more strength than the pure XC version.
