Olympics Qualification | FLAW
« on: April 16, 2012, 11:01:00 AM »

Olympics qualification for Men:
- Criteria 1 = 11 countries through Nations Ranking (24 riders)
- Criteria 2 = 6 countries through placing at the Worlds (6 riders)..........[only Elite men]

+ 2 spots, host nation and discretionary (total 32 riders)

Criteria 2 only applies to countries not qualifying through Criteria 1.....
i.e. take away top 11 countries in Nations ranking

There are 29 countries with riders with UCI points from the current season (from Aug 2011) that qualify for worlds (from 40 countries listed in the Nations Ranking).

Sooooooo......taking away the top 11 countries in Nations ranking leaves 18 countries contending for 6 places.

Points at Worlds for Elite men are awarded down to 1/8 in the eigths.......i.e. top 64.

It is likely that some of the nations/rdiers contending for the remaining 6 places do not make it through the time trials at the Worlds......(no UCI points awarded).

So after several years of competing for Nations rankings (read $$$$$$)....some of the Olympic spots will be decide on ONE lap at Birmingham.

That doesn't seem right.....

Effectively 13 nations are in with a chance for one of the 6 slots.

Based on UCI rankings as 3 April:

Top 11 Nations qualifying riders to Olympics:
1 Australia
2 France
3 United States
4 Latvia
5 Netherlands
6 Colombia
7 New Zealand
8 Germany
9 Canada
10 Argentina
11 Italy

Nations with UCI points, qualifying though Worlds, Nations ranking in left column but sorted by highest individual ranking scores:
13 Renato REZENDE Brazil
17 Morten THERKILDSEN Denmark
12 Emilio Andres FALLA BUCHELY Ecuador
14 David GRAF Switzerland
15 Sebastian KARTFJORD Norway
19 Yodoggy doo-dooaku NAGASAKO Japan
22 Arnaud DUBOIS Belgium
16 Michal PROKOP Czech Republic
27 Pablo GALAN CARRASCO Spain
21 Jonathan SUAREZ Venezuela
23 Isaisas ZAPATA Chile
38 Danny CALUAG Philippines
18 Gavin LUBBE South Africa

With UCI points but not in the running.....
26 Evgeny KLESHCHENKO Russia
30 Tautvydas BIKNIUS Lithuania
29 Xiaogang LI China
37 Christopher MIRELES Mexico

I left out host nation leading UCI
20 Liam PHILLIPS Great Britain

Danny CALUAG changed nationality from US to chase an Olympic berth.....

Kelvin Batey became Irish after 2008 GB selection process, but hasn't scored UCI points this season so isn't qualified for worlds (plus apparently his marriage conflicts with dates).

Arnaud DUBOIS qualified in 2008, but Belgium OC wouldn't send him.....
