GB Elites Barred from Worlds
« on: May 10, 2012, 09:48:39 AM »

Whats is a date?? ....or 4 days in the UCI calendar??

Well if you're GB Elite BMX athelete it's the difference between riding your home Worlds and watching (if you pay the spectator entry)....

GB (like USA untli recently) run their own races not UCI sanctioned events.....(except when hosting Euro rounds and of course the Worlds).

However, a criteria to enter Elite at Worlds is to have one UCI point.
So in Dec 2011, GB applied to have an UCI sanctioned National Champs for Elites.

The GB National Champs were run an won on 21 April 2012 (same dates as the Australia National Champs) and UCI points awarded....

BUT..the UCI BMX Worlds competition guide (dated 7 Mar 2012) states UCI points must be awarded by 17 April....!!!

At least five GB Elite riders cannot now rider their home Worlds....even though the GB National Champs were sanctioned before the cut critieria was published.

Now they've got UCI points they can't enter Challenge.

Shame

GB have played their wild cards and entered 3 Elites without UCI points:
- Ryan Bauer
- Curtis Manaton
- Scott Waterhouse

Unfortunately, Ryan Bauer brother Thomas didn't get a wildcard (even though he finished 3rd in the GB Champs ahead of Scott Waterhouse).

Riders with UCI points awarded 21 Apr and not going to Worlds:
- Thomas Bauer
- Jordan Hayes
- Toby Bearne
- Michael Cummins
- Jordan Perry

in all fairness to the riders, the control body of bmxgb have known about the possibillity of that situation arising for a while. It may not be fair but thats the rules. If they are elite riders, mayby they should have ensured they had a point way before that.

Risk of not sanctioning races through UCI.....

GB holds the Britts, their National Champs, in Sept.
The Britts are closed to international riders except for Pro / Elite classes....the only ones UCI care about.

GB also held three races at the indoor BMX facility in Manchester.......with a SX class from the 8m start hill.
These rounds were used as part of the selection of the top 16 riders for Worlds.
In this case all classes were open to international riders.........
Given these events were in mid winter (Jan / Feb)....there were heaps of international Elite riders.

Sad that GB has spent millions on capital projects:
- Indoor BMX track in Manchester
- Olympic BMX facility
- hiring NIA and building track for Worlds
- Building legacy BMX facility in Perry Park (similar to Sleeman)

Yet spent nothing on operational matters:
- no UCI rounds (except one for elites too late)
- limited funding for international competition (even though it's on the doorstep)

Even their challenge riders have no idea of how UCI races operate, i.e. fixed motos and deadman, 'cos they haven't practised.

Additionally, GB introduced a ban on clips for U13s last year.

Unfortunately, there are reports of riders crashing on the first jump and being injured.

Good luck to Oz riders......hopefully Mt. Gambier was good practise.
