Olympics are over for now and no one is sure if BMX will ever do it again. Lets forget 8m and 6m start hils and get back to the good tracks like Lake Mc Quarrie. Bobcatz build us something that suits all of us for next years Aussies.

O.K guys, finally got around to emailing BMXA who got back to me pretty much straight away. Heres my email that I sent:-

Hi Daniel
Hoping you can help me out. As you may or may not be  aware there are
a few rumors floating around about what type of starting ramp will be
used at the 2009 Aussie and World titles. I have heard from a few
different people now that a Supercross style ramp like the one used at
the 2008 Aussie titles will be used at both events. As a parent I
would like to know if this is the case so I can make an informed
decision as to wether my daughter who will be Six at the time is
capable and willing to handle such a start ramp before spending many
hundreds of dollars

And here is the response.

Hi Paul,

The UCI BMX World Championships is run under the guidelines provided by
UCI BMX.

BMX Australia must attempt to meet all requirements as set by UCI BMX.
UCI BMX requires a start hill of a minimum height of 6 metres with a
ramp angle of 15%.

Note 15% angle is not as steep as the hill provided in Adelaide 2008.

Regarding the nationals event BMX Australia are not designing the track
- this is the responsibility of BMXWA. I have not seen designs of the
track but I can assure you it will not be as big or steep as The 2008
Nationals track in Adelaide.

Obviously safety is the number one priority for all people racing on the
track no matter how young or old the participant is.

Regards,

Daniel

Can someone in WA then tell the rest of us what will happen as far as the type of start ramp to be used at the aussies. CaT, didn't you say that your Dad or something is on the BMXWA board? Would be great if we all know what to expect.

Despite the many concerns from parents of younger riders, the excitement surrounding such a start hill at this year's nationals thanks to the first straight speed it generated will see it replicated on the 09 Nationals track. We are actually looking at using a full size Supercross start hill to make the racing even faster.

Joking of course.

My strong assumption is that there will most definitely not be an SX style start hill at next year's Aussies. For one I assume it not only takes longer to put together, but would also perhaps be of greater cost (hiring a form co.)

The venue is a little tighter than this year's track, so I don't think it could accommodate an SX start hill.

I'll speak with Steve Dixon, BMXWA President this weekend about track design and report back to you all next week. (If I remember...)

Just got a letter back from UCI this morning and they told me that they would not be adopting the SX start hill for the World Titles and that the SX start hill will remain in SX only as they want to maintain a distinction between the two.
They even said that they were not impressed with the start hill from the aussies this year!!

Cheers
