Before I get started with the report I would love to thank
all those who supported the event and the Royal Children's hospital,
especially our partners and volunteers who have helped in so many
ways, that without them the event just wouldn't be possible. Thanks
to each and every spectator, we hope you had a great time, including
those on the webcam. Also the media including Jane Ollerenshaw
from Leader Newspaper, Warwick Wheeler from BMXPress and Gavin
D from XBR. And most of all the riders for putting on a fantastic
show. A special thanks to Andrew Nolan, the Eastern Region, and
BMX Australia for making it possible for the Australian High Performance
team to attend.
With heavy rainfalls on the eve of BSX2007 and thick misty fog through the morning there was some doubt that the event would go ahead early in the piece. The weather meant smaller attendances by riders and spectators, but it was interesting to see those who were really keen arriving early. We had to put the start of the practice session on hold because when the clay surface is wet, it's much like riding on ice. But that didn't seem to affect the atmosphere, helping to become an even more social event. As a Pheasant Creek local, and having kept an eye on the weather regularly in the lead up to the event, I was confident that things would work out. We just had to wait for some sun to help dry things up, it eventually happened, and luckily I had a nice little pile of sand that was thrown over the track which allowed us to get riders out on the track earlier than what would have normally been possible. Even with the sand things were a little boggy at first so we eased the riders onto the track until we were confident that everything was safe.
After a 3 hour delay practice was in full swing. Many of Australia's super stars were trying to work out the best lines through the tight and technical track. As the track continued to dry the riders were getting faster and faster. Some of the big names in Australian BMX were there including BSX2006 winner Luke Madill, Tiger Robinson, Daniel Johnstone, Jamie Gray, Michael Vockenson who finished 4th at BSX2006, Khalen Young and it was Levi Collins who lead the Victorian charge that included Josh Callan, Scott Lacey, Jonathan Hoare, Shannon Rademaker and others. Tanya Bailey and Ziggy Callan who didn't have enough for a class of their own also joined the men's class. What was most interesting to me was the number of dirt jumpers who showed. Sure there were only 3 or 4 of them but when one of them was Steve McCann who spends most of the year in the US competing in dirt jumping and street comps. Steve was riding the track comfortably during the practice session but decided not to compete, it was fun having him there though. Another rider who was in the practice session but didn't race was Khalen Young who has been making a big impact on his return to racing. Billy Jolliffe who placed 2nd at BSX2006 was in attendance but chose to spectate this time around.
Here's how the time trials went down. Oh and we sent Madison Denholm off first to help test the timers out. He set a cracking time of 23.32, not bad for a 13 year old.

With lots of fun raising activity including all the merchandise sales, auctions and raffles and so on have generated close to $6000 which should round up nicely when we have sold the remaining t-shirts.
The Karlten.com Vs Luke Madill Challenge
One of the fund raising ideas for BSX2007 was match racing.
You pay a $50 donation and select 2 riders to go head to head.
Naturally there's a tax receipt for donations over $2, so everyone
wins. Just when we thought everyone had forgotten about it and
were about to start with presentation a challenge was set down.
Eight year old Karlten Wolsey (2004 world champion) and Luke Madill
lined up on the gate together to put on a show for the crowd.
When the gate dropped Karlten and Luke set out to have a fun ride.
Karlten styled it up and wowed the crowd while Madill pumped the
track to keep the racing close. In the end the crowd and the Royal
Children's Hospital were the real winners.
Thank you to everyone who supported the event and we hope for better weather next year and a whole lot more fun.
The fundraiser
One thing about BSX is that most people within the BMX fraternity know it's a one-on-one BMX race. It's easy to forget it's primarily a fundraising event for the Royal Children's Hospital. We have winners and losers in the race on the day, that's the main event that attracts the spectators, the fans of some of the world's best BMXers. When the dust settles it's the Children's Hospital that's the winner. Although having said that you can nearly guarantee that Luke Madill will be on top of the podium, having now won it two years in a row.
It's not only the Royal Children's Hospital who benefit though, it's also the Kinglake West community. The local Country Fire Authority branch cater for BSX, all of the money they raise goes back to maintenance and purchasing new equipment.
To raise money we had to spend money, we also needed the help from our fantastic partners who supplied product for auctions, raffles, door prizes, etc. Without the help of our partners rasping a significant amount of money would be very difficult. It's time to thank those who helped make BSX2007 a success.
Platinum partner
Our naming rights partner, Battery, supplied cartons of beer which were auctioned off and collected after the event, a Fender electric guitar which was also auctioned off and many cans of Battery Energy drink which were sold cold and the excess were given away.
Gold partners
The insurance for BSX2006 cost $1400 for the day and we still managed to make a profit of just over $3200. All of which was presented to the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation. For BSX2007 Gavin D of XBR stepped in and covered the insurance for the event, allowing us to dramatically decrease the expense and maximise the money we could potentially raise for the charity. Not only that XBR helped promote the event in the months leading up to BSX2007 and had photos printed of each of the riders to be auctioned off when the racing had finished. If you grab the January 2007 edition of XBR you will see a two page spread of photos and words from the day.
ManageSoft have been very supportive since our first BSX, not only providing a significant donation to the Children's Hospital but supplying people to help with the running of the event. It doesn't stop there though, ManageSoft have other internal fundraising plans for the Children's Hospital.
Dirt Designs once again supplied the t-shirts and number plates for the BSX, not only are they a major contributor but also partially responsible for the BSX concept.
Silver partners
DK Bicycles joined us as a partner for the first time at BSX2007 their kind contribution far exceeded that expected of a silver partner. The many DK parts that were raffled off were well received.
FreeAgent Australia had donated an entry level race bike, an Eluder, and a helmet of which I am proud to say a Kinglake local won. We used the bike as a draw card for the local community through a voucher drop at the local primary schools.
Elite Cycle Imports supplied Intense (ITS) tires and THE grips and a bike stand which were very popular items on the day.
One Bicycles supplied everything from sticker packs to jerseys to number plates and more allowing us to add a lot of value with consolation prizes to each of the raffles. The jerseys were auctioned off.
Safe and Sound Production Services did a fantastic job on the day supplying the music, PA and scaffolding for the video crew. They have been a great supporter of BSX and BMX in general.
Bronze Partners
All of our bronze partners including Alpine Timber Doors and Windows, Bayswater Cycles, BMXMAD, DMC outsourcing, Fox Racing by Monza Imports, Goldcross Cycles Chirnside Park, Mud Honey MX, Redline USA, Scot Breithaupt and Splash Creative made contributions that allowed us to make a lot of extra money through auctions and raffles.
I personally would like to thank everyone who contributed either as a partner, a volunteer, a competitor, a spectator, or even if it was just watching on the webcam on the day. A special thanks to XBR, BMXPress and the Leader Newspaper for attending. Our total profit should tip well over the $6000 mark when the fundraising activities are finished. We are hoping that the local council revoke a Planning Infringement fine of $500 to help us keep the total contribution above the $6000 mark.
We will announce the final amount contributed to the hospital when it's available.
It's easy to forget some people since so many helped to make BSX2007 happen. Thanks to Andrew Nolen, Sean Dwight and BMX Australia for helping us make it possible to have the Australian High Performance Team in attendance. BMX Australia also waived any fees required to make it possible. The Eastern Region (the guys who run Track Attack) also helped a lot behind the scenes, any unlicenced riders had their day licences payed by Eastern Region. The Knox BMX club had also donated $210 from money they collected from gate practice sessions, they also donatated their left over BBQ food from the race the day before which was a lot of meat, eggs and bread.
After the racing is over the competition starts to heat up in the auctions. The number plate auction is one of the hotest contested, especially when it comes to the #1 plate, the guy who pulls the fastest time on the track. Last year Luke Madill won the #1 and $200 cash that went to the fastest time. Suspiciously the number plate sold for $200.
Here's how the top 10 number plates went this year, sorry I haven't sorted them.
Name | $ |
Michael Robinson | 70 |
Luke Madill | 65 |
Daniel Johnstone | 40 |
Jamie Gray | 33 |
Levi Collins | 40 |
Tom Siinmaa | 20 |
Luke Pretlove | 25 |
Shannon Rademaker | 50 |
Simon Anderson | 50 |
Shane Jenkins | 21 |
We also had a few signed jerseys going to the highest bidders. The Bubba Harris race worn and signed jersey sold for $300 and the DK jersey signed by the Australian DK team went for $240. The Kuwahara Jersey signed by Warwick Steveson and Matt Pohlkamp and Tony Harvey's signed Avent jersey also pulled good money.
Some of the hottest contested silent auction items were the 2 Joe Kid on a Stingray DVD's that were signed by Scot "The OM of BMX" Breithaupt, the late auction item that was brought up on the day by BMXMAD an Answer ACF carbon helmet, and the cartons of Beer.
