26/06 Supercross frame upgrade program
Santa
Clarita, CA - We here at Supercross remember what
it is like trying to save up for a new frame, and with frame prices rising
it takes longer and longer to get the frame of your dreams than ever before.
Then add in the fact that most of the new frames are Euro BB and you have
to figure in the cost of a new BB as well. Wouldn't be cool if you could
buy frames like cares on a payment plan of some type. Well we think we
have a great promo for you. Any SUPERCROSS
DEVO series frame that is bought between June 1st and Sept. 30th 2003,
qualifies you for a trade up program. So you get a great handling bike
now, and while you are saving your money you get to upgrade later for
almost 1/2 of the retail value of the 2004 UL. That way you get the same
great geometry of the UL on the DEVO, you have an American BB so no need
to rush to buy the Euro right away and it is still a full seamless 4130
cro-mo frame with an air hardened downtube. So you get a super strong and
light frame ( only 5.2lbs for the XL ) and within the year if you decide
that you want to upgrade to a new 2004 UL series with Euro BB and triple
butted air hardened tubeset it is going to only cost you $200 to upgrade
to the 04' model.
We feel that this way it keeps you happier as you are out riding your bike while you are saving for the future bike of your dreams. So go on over to your local Supercross Dealer and check out the new 2003 DEVO we know you will be happy and when you have the funds to upgrade it is there for you at a fraction of the cost.
Effective from June 1st, 2003 to September 30th, 2003 all riders who purchase a 2003 model SUPERCROSS DEVO frame are eligible within the next 12 (twelve) months to upgrade to a SUPERCROSS UL series frame for a $200 fee with return of their DEVO model frame in original condition with all original decals in place. In order for the rider to qualify they need to return this form, along with thier original reciept from an authorized SUPERCROSS DEALER along with a money order for the $200. This offer is valid in the United States only and is subject to applicable laws. 2003 DEVO frames that are returned under this program will not be resold, they will be donated to local tracks and youth organizations to put more kids on bikes to learn how much fun BMX is.
For more information about the upgrade program check out www.supercrossbmx.com

25/06 Victorian 4X Championships
Dates are confirmed for the Victorian 4X Championships to be held at Delhuntie
Park, Trafalgar on Sunday October 5, 2003. We are told the track was already
big and fast, but it's currently undergoing bigger improvements, which
should make for some pretty exciting racing.
The organisers of the meeting are doing their best to keep Victorian BMXers
involved in their sport, but I noticed that their state championships
will clash with the sactioned BMX race down in Warrnambool.
More details as they come to hand. If you require any further information
you can contact Brendan Scale (Victorian 4X Championships) on his mobile

23/06 Northern Rivers regional championships
round 5 - Shepparton report
On
sunday Shepparton hosted the 5th round of the Northen Rivers championships.
The Shepparton BMX Club have been making a lot of changes to their track
lately, with a renewed third straight and some small modifications to
the last straight. The gate has also changed since I was last there and
not once did I see it fail (this was a big problem at the last couple
of meetings at Shepp, mid to late last year).
The weather wasn't kind, it was pretty much rain all day which caused
a lot of confusion when riders were told by officials that there would
only be 3 motos then finals. Then, just before the third round of motos
would finish it was announced there would be a 4th moto then a final,
as per other Northern Rivers rounds. By the second moto the track was
already very slippery and very wet, the third straight was turning into
a bog and riders were mud splattered and drenched.
In the 19&over womens class Kate Elliot (DK) was getting a run for
her money from Jane Ollerenshaw, but it was Kate's jumping skills that
gave her the advantage and the win for the day.
In the (Pro) Open Money class there were 2 full gates of riders, including
AA Pros Danny Galea, Levi Collins, Brock Tuckerman and A Pros Robert Slatter,
Shane Jenkins, Nathan May, Grant Carra, Brian Slatter, Nathan Barker and
others. In the motos Collins had perfect wins, Tuckerman and Galea qualified
comfortably but Galea was gaining momentum with every moto. Jenkins, May
and Carra also qualified easily. Things could have gone wrong for the
Slatter brothers when they crashed together in the second moto, but both
still managed to qualify for the main, Nathan Barker narrowly missed out.
When the gate dropped in the main it was Galea who got the snap with Collins
and Robert Slatter giving chase, followed by the second wave of riders
including Jenkins, May and Brian Slatter, Tuckerman and Carra were left
chasing up the rear. Robert Slatter seemed to stop going into the second
straight with May and Tuckerman gaining speed. But Galea finished up with
the win, his first win since returning to the track after breaking his
collarbone before the Australian championships.
Full results should be available soon, to see photos of the event check

the next few days.

20/06 Rumour: 19+ Women's cruiser at the worlds
(Part 2)
There have been discussions about the article from
Monday about the women's cruiser at the Worlds. Some say that women
who haven't even been in the sport for 6 months, or those who chose to
race their own class and not a UCI recognised class, don't deserve an
opportunity to race at the World titles. They say with an under-subscribed
class they are pretty much buying a title. I think that some people have
short memories. Before there was Steven Bradbury winning Olympic gold
in speed skating, Australia had Chris Jongewaard in 1998. Sure Chris has
made a few finals at nationals, but to many he was still a nobody, pretty
much because he came from Northen Territory, despite that he was no match
for the likes of Darren Hawkins on the day. Chris had a bit luck on his
side and made it right through to the Senior Elite mens final, a final
that many great riders missed out, including many times world champ Gary
Ellis, he was the only Australian to make that final.
What I am getting at is that it doesn't matter how long you have been
racing, under UCI rules anyone has a chance to make the main.
The biggest problem with under-subscribed classes is the other riders
who are racing have to pay even more in their entry fees to help cover
costs, and if there is a loss it's the other riders who will have to pay
even more at future events, like say next years Nationals.

18/06 Scot Breithaupt at Rockford this weekend
We hear from an extremely reliable source that the founding father of
BMX, Scot Breithaupt the "OM of BMX" himself will be the Rockford
Vintage BMX event June 20th to 22nd (that's this weekend). The event has
been running for a few years now. It's an opportunity for many old-school
BMX fans to show off their piece of BMX history.
The event is run in conjunction with the ABA Nationals at Rockford, IL.
This is a rare opportunity to meet the guy who started BMX and founding
father of the legendary SE Racing.
If you see Scot say hi from BMXUltra.com.
18/06 Chris Fernandez doubles at ABA Dixieland
National
Team Profile Racing/Maxxis A-Pro, Chris Fernandez,
weathered a humid, soft track at Jim R. Miller Park Arena to pull off
two A-Pro wins this past weekend at the ABA Atlanta Dixieland National.
Fernandez, ranked 215 among all ABA A-Pros, was the unknown rider as he
claimed the first straight as his own all weekend. He was atop the podium
both Saturday and Sunday after battling three full gates of A-Pros. There
was no stopping him as he launched one awesome gate after another. Profile
Racing/Maxxis teammate, Percy “O-Show” Owens, chided Fernandez’
competitors scolding them for letting a rookie-pro beat them. Legend A-Pro
(and former Profile Racing team member (a looooong time ago)), Eric “Big
Daddy” Rupe, celebrated his 40th birthday and he’s still taking
names and kicking butts.
Percy “O-Show” Owens had a great weekend too and made his presencefe. Owens made his Mains in AA-Pro Class claiming sixth in Saturday’s Main and fourth on Sunday. Percy and Chris thank the ABA for their great hospitality. The ABA always puts on a “good show.” When it came time to leave George on Sunday, this is how the history books read:

16/06 New website: BMXstars.com
While Victoria appears to be the BMX website capital of Australia,
it continues to grow with the addition of BMXstars.com.
Tracey Coles, wife of 30-34 class racer Dean Coles, has taken some photos
that we have used here on BMXUltra.com, including the ACT titles and the
Australian Championships.
BMXstars will have a focus mostly on her photos which will cover all classes,
but in addition to the photos there's also be news, profiles and a guestbook
where people can discuss BMX, the website or anything else they like.
Over the coming weeks you should see photos from additional race meetings
as Tracey works through the back log and a bunch of profiles.
To find out more check out www.bmxstars.com.
16/06 Rumour: 19+ Women's cruiser at the worlds
A little birdy told us that BMX Australia have chosen to not
fully subscribe the 19 and over womens cruiser at the upcoming World Championships.
A little bit of history: BMX Australia changed the format of racing at
the Australian Championships this year to help prepare their riders for
the 2003 world championships. They pretty much had all the UCI classes
plus additional non-UCI classes that the Australians had grown to expect,
including cruiser classes for the women who would be less competitive
in the 19 and over womens cruiser class.
While some chose to qualify for the worlds and rode in the 19 and over
class, others went off and competed in their own classes for a title.
There were less than 32 female riders on cruisers at the National Championships
when you add up the numbers for all the female classes, so all of those
women expected they would automatically qualify for the worlds or be allowed
a wild card entry.
It has come to our attention that only the women who competed in the 19
and over class will be allowed to compete at the world titles and those
who didn't will not be offered a wild card.
Last I looked BMX racing was a sport for the riders, regardless of age,
race or sex. There should be abolutly no discrimination and there is no
doubt the women are being discriminated against. There are only 14 womens
classes offered at the world championships and 24 mens classes. More specifically
there are 5 classes for men from 19 and up on the cruiser, there is only
one for the females. Even stranger is the fact that some of the male classes
have more than the top 32 riders for the class entered and finalised.
With the rise of NBA (http://www.nbabmx.com/),
the new association in Australia set to commence next month, who will
benefit from such a decision. BMX isn't all about world championships,
it's about having fun, meeting people and riding.
13/06 Mt Gambier race report
Mt Gambier is a 420Km drive west of Melbourne, which puts it
just over half way to Adelaide. Every year over the Queens Birthday long
weekend, for as long as I can remember, Mt Gambier has hosted the Victoria
Vs South Australia challenge, where the two states try to out race each
other.
The meeting has taken many forms, the most successful for the club for
recent times was probably last year..but this time around there had to
be some changes to fit in with the UCI points schedule.
Numbers were down on last year and I think this could be owed to riders
being committed to the World titles later next month...no matter what
your financial situation it's not going to be a cheap trip.
Restricted by budget myself I loaded up the car with bikes and riders,
to share the expenses, and was only in Mt Gambier for Saturday's racing,
the meeting called the Australian Country Championships. The first thing
we'd noticed on arriving at the track was that it had been raining heavily
overnight, not surprising given the time of the year. But the Mt Gambier
track has the type of surface that the water runs straight off and dries
out quickly. The track had changed a little too, and for the better. Last
year the first half of the track was awesome, but it tapered out to a
bunch of roller jumps which meant you had to pedal about 200 meters to
the line. With a bunch of new jumps in the last half of the track it made
it fun and better, breaking up the pedaling a bit, the track still felt
long though.
Of the pro riders it was interesting to note that Michael Robinson (GT
Aus), Luke Pretlove (Redline/TotalBMX), Simon Anderson (GT Aus) and Mike
Fenwick (Specialized Aus), all in the chase for UCI points were competing.
There was a UCI round held in NSW that same day, but the travelling to
two states for two seperate UCI rounds. I guess these guys were here mostly
for the Sunday UCI points. Danny Galea made a return to racing, his first
race since breaking his collar bone in practice at the Australian championships,
he's ramping things up to compete at the worlds, then he says it's time
to go back into semi-retirement and give the veledrome a go...pulling
out the BMX bikes for larger events and just for fun.
The female pros included Emma Franklin (Oneal) and Kerrie-Lee Lucas, these
guys had some great races but Emma was too strong for the rest of the
field.
The bruiser cruiser (30 and over Vet Pro cruiser) class promised to be
quite a competitive event, with the likes of Shane Jenkins (BMXUltra.com/Supercross/Answer)
who took out the class last year, Glenn Suridge who took second last year,
Wayne Flint, Dean Coles (bmxstars.com), Brian Kelly (S&M/ECI), Craig
Walczuk (Redline/TotalBMX) and a bunch of South Australian riders. In
the final Walczuk crashed, which was no surprise to anyone, but he looked
like he'd hurt himself, still no surprise. Brian Kelly got all hooked
up with him, Flint and Jenkins fought to the finish for line honours.
Flint won, Jenkins second, Suridge third, Coles fourth, Kelly fifth, and
I can't remember the rest, sorry.
In the pro final Robinson and Fenwick were close but Robinson seemed to
have an edge on the youngster, Pretlove was very close behind. Galea did
well to make it into the main but is lacking fitness, I don't think it
would take him long to get it back. Local rider Nick Brooks, the man in
black, did well to make the main, he's been improving slowly and will
be a rider to look out for in the near future.
We heard that Sunday and Monday ran pretty smoothly. Darren Hawkins and
Tanya Bailey flew down overnight after competing at the UCI round in Tamworth.
Robinson won pretty much everything including the fastest lap ($500),
Darren Hawkins got second ($100) and Fenwick third ($50). For the women
Emma Franklin got first ($250 - what a sport this girl is, she shared
her money with some of the younger women who tried for the fastest time),
Tanya Bailey go second ($50).
Also Mt Gambier intends to do a fair bit of work to the track this year
it should be heaps better again for next year. The club is pretty happy
with how things went with plenty of ideas for next year such as a non-pro
fastest lap for money prizes open to any age rider.
We are sill waiting for the full results.
I hope next year the meeting gets the support it deserves.
12/06 Photos: Mt Gambier
We've posted some photos from the 2003 Australian Country Championships
held at Mt Gambier on the weekend. Thanks to Jane Ollerenshaw for taking
them for us. Race report and full results from the weekend to follow shortly.
For now check out the photos in
the photos section of BMXUltra.com.
11/06 UCI BMX News
UCI World Continental Ranking
The UCI World Continental Ranking is in full swing on all four continents,
with the Oceanic & South American continent almost coming to an end
and with the European continent just starting up the hunt for UCI ranking
point. This year the number of events has increased to 8 races on each
continent counting for UCI ranking points, which makes it easier for riders
to be competitive in the overall ranking. Each rider will bring their
top 5 results/points to the UCI BMX World Championships in Perth, Australia,
where the UCI World Ranking will be decided.
Latin America ranking
The continental ranking in Latin America has come to and end after 8 races.
Fernando Silveira (BRA) won with 55 points being one of the most consistant
riders in Latin America. Gonzalo Ureta (Chile) and Rodrigo Ureta (Chile)
rounded of the continental podium.
Joyce Moretti (Brazil) showed everyone that consistency pays off, after
attending all 8 rounds counting for ranking, she ended up with 58 points,
only 2 points away from the maximum points you can receive. Angelines
Nicoletta (Chile) ended up second with 47 points.
North American ranking
In North America, with only 3 races left, Randy Stumphauser (USA) with
52 points and Kyle Bennett (USA) on 49 points stand out in the points
chase. A lot can still happen before the World Championships and Robert
de Wilde (NED), John Purse (USA) and Matt Pohlkamp (USA) stands a good
chance to catch up if they decide to attend the NBL Stars’n’stripes
in South Park and the NBL National in Waterford.
Kimberly Hayashi (USA) has a pretty comfortable lead with 53 points including
several National wins. Michelle Cairns is in second with 38 points and
Arielle Martin in third with 37 points.
Oceanic ranking.
With 3 rounds to go, Wade Bootes (AUS) leads the Oceanic ranking. Although
Bootes is recovering from a broken collarbone and will be busy attending
the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup, Bootes still stand a good chance to win
the oceanic ranking with his 49 points and more importantly, when he comesinto
the World Championships in July, those points will be very valuable for
the overall World ranking prize money. Michel Robinson (Australia), Luke
Madill (Australia) and John Johnson (Australia) all stands a good chance
to catch Bootes in the last couple of rounds.
In the Elite Women class, Tanya Bailey (Australia) leads with 34 points,
with Kerrie-Lee Lucas (Australia) in second with 30 points.
European ranking
The European riders have been busy with the European Championships series,
which counts for international points. Ivo Lakucs (Latvia) is the man
to beat this year and have showed some remarkable consistency and leads
with 42 points, followed closely by Lukas Tamme (Czech Republic) with
39 points. Still 4 races to go and a lot can happen.
Dagmara Polakova (Slovakia) has 39 points so far in the series, followed
closely by Jana Horáková (Czech Republic) with 36 points.

06/06 Northern Park race report
The Northern Park club, formally known as Lalor Park which is
actually located in Mill Park - hence the name change, have been very
busy updating their track. It's the first time the track has been changed
since before the 1998 UCI World Cup. With former Australian Elite Champion/AA
Pro Tony Harvey (S&M/ECI) designing the track and overseeing the work
you can bet the track was going to have some big, and tricky, jumps...making
it the perfect venue for the 2003 Victorian State Championships coming
up in November. The club did make some additional changes the day before
the race and received a load of rain overnight.
At first racing looked doubtful, but with a lot of faith and some shovels
a couple of people got the track on order for racing. Once racing started
the track was slow, given the amount of water it had taken over night
it's not surprising, and there were a couple of very muddy patches but
the wind started to dry them out as the day went on.
There were three gates of riders in the Open Money class, Luke Pretlove
was entered but a no show, Johnathan Hoare tweeked his ankle in practice
and sat out of the racing but there was still a stacked field none the
less. AA Pros Harvey, Robb, Porter, Price and Anderson took on A Pros
Lacey, Jenkins, Kahl, Craig Walczuk, Connor Hunter and a bunch of others.
In the motos Harvey dominated and Robb, Porter, Price, Anderson, Jenkins
and Kahl qualified comfortably. Lacey had to go through a run off with
Walczuk for the final place in the main, and although off to a slow start
he made aup a lot of ground at the end of the first straight and his young
legs were too much for Walczuk.
In the final everyone was side by side with Harvey having the edge over
the field. Coming out of the first corner a couple of riders got caught
up Anderson and Kahl went down. Harvey was untouchable and took it to
the line.
Mens Money Class results
1. Tony Harvey (S&M/ECI)
2. Adam Robb (Redline/TotalBMX)
3. Glenn Porter (Cassap)
4. Scott Lacey (Felt/BMXBits.com.au)
5. Ben Price (Sinister racing)
6. Simon Anderson (GT Australia)
7. Jared Kahl

03/06 Supercross Australian
grass roots program reminder
If you thought about this deal but haven't contacted us please
do, we have had a few enquiries, but if you are genuinely interested all
applicants will be considered. If you are one of the people who has expressed
interest at the track please drop me an email, I have a memory like a
sieve.
Here's the details again:
Supercross USA are looking for 4 Australian riders to join it's Australian
grass roots program. This is a rare opportunity to help one of the worlds
best BMX manufacturers promote it's products in the Australian BMX market.
You don't have to be the best rider in your class to guarantee yourself
a position, what is more important is that you have a passion for BMX.
A friendly and outgoing personality is also a plus. If you are a successful
cantidate, you will receive a large discount off the complete SX product
range and receive a factory SX jersey. You will also receive regular promotion
on BMXUltra.com, and other websites, through the Australian SX team press
releases. As they say "from little things big things grow ",
there is every possibility that the deal could improve over time as more
and more products are sold in Australia.
If you have any questions or you are interested in applying please send
your resume to webmaster@bmxultra.com
by 7 June 2003. Remember this offer is limited to Australian riders only.
Check www.supercrossbmx.com

02/06 BMXUltra.com photos published
in childrens book
Some
of the BMXUltra.com photos, taken by Shane Jenkins on his month long racing
tour throughout the USA in 2000, have been published in an educational
childrens book.
The book contains a lot of information about bikes, including the history
of bikes, how they work, maintenance, road racing, track racing, mountain
biking, BMX freestyle and BMX racing.
In the BMX racing section there is a double page photo is of the NBL Stars
and Stripes national with Thomas Allier and Mario Soto jumping the South
Park prosection doubles. There's also a smaller photo from the NBL Summer
nationals at Evansville Indiana which is a gate start shot which includes
the likes of Neil Wood, Andy Contes, Jeff Dein, Kevin Tomko and others.
Although the book may not be particularly educational for BMXers, it's
great for kids and helps in promoting BMX to a wider audience.
The Best Book Of Bikes was written by Amy Pinchuk and is published by
Maple Tree Press in Toronto, Canada. It's a part of the educational Popular
Mechanics for Kids series.
