26/11 Victorian State Championships preview 2
We've said that the number of riders are down in the Senior Elite class for the Victorian titles but where are all the Elite riders now? Luke Pretlove will be racing, but only in the cruiser class, it's very early days since returning from his foot injury, his focus will be on next years racing. Ben Price had a hard time staying on his bike at the Worlds, which might have scared him off, he'll be back on the bike soon. Simon Grigg who finished 2nd to Danny Galea last year is taking some time off, he's travelling through Europe but plans on returning to racing for 2004. Shane Jenkins has returned to the 30-34 amature class for his 21st consecutive Victorian state championships, after having competed in the Elite class for the last 14 years.
The Junior Elite class is going to be great to watch.
Jonathan Hoare (AA Pro) has what it takes to be the Victorian Champion, but it will be close.
Levi Collins (AA Pro) is up and down with his results, where he's had some great results and he's had some ordinary ones too, if anyone could beat Jonathan on the day Levi will be a good chance.
Dean Beerens (AA Pro) has been doing a lot of falling lately, when he's in form he's hard to beat.
Ken Babington (AA Pro) knows the track backwards, has the skills and the leg speed, for Ken it comes down to his start, if he gets a good one look out.
Brock Tuckerman (AA Pro) has been quiet this year, but we have all seen what he's capable of, a real contender.
Joseph Bujak has been riding really well lately, he's been impressive, he'll be the fastest A pro amongst the field.
Dean Miller hasn't had much time to prepare for this meeting, just coming back from injury. Lucky the track isn't real technical, I doubt he'll have the fitness to match Hoare and Levi.
Aaron Wood has been improving the last couple of months, could be a dark horse.
Anthony Gray has the home track advantage, with a good run he might finish just out of a podium finish.
Michael Popko has been riding well as an A pro but is in a tough field.
Grant Carra has been off the bike with injuries, has skills but needs to work on his strength, could make the main.
Elite Women will be a small class but we hope it will be exciting Kate Eliott has been getting closer and closer to Emma Franklin as the year has progressed. Caroline Sabotka could get amongst it on this old school track. I don't think that Kirsten Taylor will be able to match it with these riders.

25/11 Victorian State Championships preview
The senior elite class at the Victorian State Championships is a dwindling class, there are only 9 entries this year. That's not to say that there wont be some great racing at Lalor, but maybe cheaper entry fees would have made a difference and certainly A and AA Pro classes would have meant a bigger class and even better racing since a number of the Victorian Junior Elite riders are AA Pro.
The three riders who have been dominant in the Senior Elite class over the past few years are Tony Harvey, Danny Galea, and Simon Anderson, all of which have been a little short of top form. Tony Harvey is probably the favourite to win, however his results lately have been messing with his head, he's struggled to win finals in only 2 occasions in the last 6 weeks. At his last outing at Lalor he had a little trouble with the gate and keeping his bike upright, if he can keep it together it will be his first Victorian crown in 4 years. Danny Galea will try for the back to back number 1 but has had a number of distractions this year with his broken collarbone and mountain bike racing. On a track like Lalor is quite capable of winning his third elite title. Simon Anderson has been quiet lately, he's been quite ill for over a month so has done very little racing, despite this you can't count him out. He's won the elite title twice before and always rides well at the titles.
Others to look out for in the class:
Adam Robb always rides well at Lalor, he's been injured lately, but it wont slow him down, watch him on the last half of the track.
Nathan Barker may not make a huge impact on the top 3 this year, but he gets better everytime we see him, he's one of the riders of the future.
Charles Nelson would have won the 19&Over amature class but chose to ride elite, if he gets a good start anything could happen.
Rob Slatter has done everything you can do in the Am classes, it's good to see him finally taking on riders of his own caliber.
Trevor Stamford is "flat out fast" out of the gate and for the first half of the track, he could well be an upset in the race.
And finally Matthew White, he doesn't race much but when he does he usually finishes in the top 3, he has the skills and the leg speed to hang with the rest of the class but I dont think he has the strength.

21/11 Avent's new Carbon/Aluminium 'MORPHEUS' frame on display at ABA Grands
Following all the hoopla surrounding one of the most controversial frame designs to emerge in quite a while, the Avent crew will have it's new carbon fiber and aluminum 'Morpheus' frame available for inspection in Tulsa over Thanksgiving weekend. This frame design caused quite a stir at the Interbike show in Vegas in early October as well as at the ABA Fallnationals in Del Mar and during a photo shoot where AA Pro Tyler Brown busted a few backflips on it. This attention sparked an 11+ page discussion on VintageBMX.com's bulletin board. So now for all the nay-sayers out there, here's your chance to get a look at the frame you've been all talking about!

In related Avent news, word on the street is team manager Will Rells has assembled a pretty tight group of riders to take the ABA and NBL by storm in 2004. The team totals 9 amateurs with a combined 26 World Championship titles and 23 National #1 titles between them, this may be one of the best teams ever to hit a BMX track. Look for the official roster announcement sometime after the ABA Grands!

18/11 Mason Baldi thanks
Dear BMXUltra.com,
As www.bmxultra.com is the most popular of BMX sites, I know this message will not only reach the people it concerns but also let others know of their kindness.

During the year a BMX rider named Mason Baldi from the Nth Rivers Region has been a very unwell young man. So unwell that he has had to put aside his love of BMX racing and become a spectator. In early September Mason underwent a major operation which he has come through with flying colours, and may even be back racing early next year.

But it was through the time prior to Mason’s recovery I asked a few people to help me out with anything they thought would help keep Masons spirits up while he was waiting for his surgery and I was overwhelmed with the generosity of the BMX community.

And so with your help I would like to say a very big “THANK YOU” to-

Steve Robinson from GT Australia

All the riders who signed banners, posters and shirts and every-one who passed on best wishes and prayers.

Thanks again from myself and Mason.

18/11 Charity Toys for Tots BMX Clinic was a huge success.
Warwick Stevenson helps out with the Toys for tots clinicThe First Annual Charity Toys for Tots BMX Clinic was a huge success. The spirit of BMX was strong with all the kids in attendance participating, all the parents taking pride in their child's' effort and accomplishments, and the community of BMX came together for the kids. That is BMX!!!
Black Mtn BMX had over 85 riders which included more than a few first time riders to expert riders. We want to thank Haro's AA Pro Warwick Stevenson for bringing us together, because of his time, commitment and generosity the "Toy for Tots Kids" will receive over 250 Toys and $400.00 in cash donations. A huge thanks goes out to AA Pro Justin Snoderly who also donated his time to help. Not only did he help instruct half the kids, but he helped organized the "Step Down Contest". Also a BIG thank you to Arizona's restaurants Oregano's Pizza Bistro and Julio G's, who donated lunch for over 100 people, and the parents who pitched in for water and candy.

After the clinic Warwick held a live auction, auctioning his Haro Race Jerseys, a few yet to be released 2004 Haro Hats and T-shirts!! Warwick even got the auction fever and even out bided the crowd on his own Jersey, turning around a few minutes later to throw it into the crowd in a give-a way!!! Tons of ATI Grips, number plates and donuts were handed out as door prizes and later thrown out to the crowd in a mad dash spectacle. Every rider went home with a pamphlet of BMX Tips and a big BMX smile.

Thanks also goes to Kevin from Gordy's Bike Shop for being on site for any bike emergencies.. It's always good to have a top mechanic in the house, Jill from Haro Bikes, for all the Haro goodies, Bruce from ATI, and Jeff and Kim from the Racegirl BMX League for sponsoring the Clinic!! Also to Kristie from Supercross/SuperCamp who made a last minute surprise visit and gave away a free season pass to a first time rider and new full member, and also to Black Mountains' own Debbie Kelly for donating the track, the track volunteers for watering and set up, Jake and Tammy Johnson, and all the kids and parents that brought toys!!!

17/11 R&G Stunt Team Continues to fly higher with a boost from co-sponsors
Edmonds, Washington - RIDEANDGLIDE.COM Skate and BMX Bike Stunt Team is now getting product support from Skyway and F.Q. Industries.

The teams manager, Brent Sprute said "It is really great to have Skyway behind the team, their sealed graphite tuff wheel is legendary." When probed for more information Sprute gave the following explanation. " Both Skyway and F.Q. industries manufacture quality American made products. This all came about when I made a call to Bart at Skyway to see what was going on with all the crazy rumors about Skyway making BMX frames again; Bart said they found a small stash of the old T.A. model BMX frames in the warehouse but didn't have plans to make new ones. After talking for a bit I got the word that Skyway was manufacturing the graphite tuff wheels with some notable improvements like sealed-bearing hubs with axles that work with both 3/8" or 14mm frame and fork dropouts and higher tire pressures than possible with previous composite wheels. Next thing I know I'm making trips to the local skatepark and doing shows with the new Skyway brakepads and graphite tuffwheels on my Redline (Supa X- model) BMX bike." After performing a show with Sprute sporting the new Skyway graphite Tuff Wheel for the first time; Team member and fellow ramp rider David Camacho was so impressed with the new Skyway wheel he asked if he could get the new graphite model for his own bike. It's safe to say that you will see more riders taking to the air with Skyway's products in the near future.

The support from F.Q. Industries came about naturally with the owners of RIDEANDGLIDE.COM stunt team and F.Q. Industries being good friends for years now. The F in F.Q. Industries is Company President Trask Fredrickson. Trask is a visionary when it comes to producing original quality BMX parts such as his companies first product, the Evil-Good stem which keeps getting rave reviews from BMX riders. Fredrickson started his company earlier this year with the idea that products should be high quality and affordably priced. Trask will have sprockets as well as a line of soft goods out before the holidays. All F.Q. Industries products draw on Fredricksons years of experience in the field of bicycling which have lead to high quality products. When asked to comment on the design of the stem trask said. " These are the stems that have the clever face plate. Have it one way, and it has a cross and says good across the top (for all you do gooders out there). Turn it the other way, and the cross is upside-down and it says evil across the top (for the hell-raising hessier in all of us).The stems are also available in four distinct finishes; polished w/painted relief, urban-camo, pewter, and gothic-black. There is nothing out there like these guys, and they are sure to be copied and we will get nothing for it."

RIDEANDGLIDE.COM stunt team would like to thank current team sponsors, Redline Bicycles & Pryme safety Gear as well as welcome the team's new co-sponsors, Skyway and F.Q. Industries.

14/11 Redline Australia team news
The Head Honcho at Redline watched young Josh Callan win World #1 on both 20 and cruiser at this years worlds in Perth and thought we have to have this kid on a Flight Series Redline!!
Young Josh probably wont have his bike until December though, due to the high demand the bikes have had from Redline Australia.
Luke Pretlove will probably only race Elite Cruiser at the Victorian State Titles if he races at all, he is still getting over his broken foot.
Craig "Wally" Walczuk and his lovely wife Kristy have had there first baby. After a 24 hour labour young Liam Craig crashed his way into the delivery room, both Mum and baby were fine.

14/11 Matthew Dunsworth update
Matthew Dunsworth, number 2 Australia in the 11 boys (from Knox Club), was injured during practice at Lalor on Sunday. He dislocated his right wrist, broke his right forearm and right collarbone and also broke his left wrist and is in plaster from shoulders down on both arms. He also smashed his left knee and had a good bump on his head. He is now home from hospital and would like to thank everyone for their thoughts etc.

13/11 Shannon Rademaker injured
Victorian rider Shannon Rademaker (cyclelink.com.au/BMXUltra.com) is a quiet achiever. He returned to BMX last year after some 10 years out of the sport and has gradually built up his skills and strength to take a handful of wins in the 19 & Over mens class, he's even had a go at a couple of pro opens, making a couple of finals throughout the 2003 season. He crashed while winning the B grade final of the Victorian 4X Championships just over a month ago, proving that he can handle speed and big jumps. He's out of action for quite some time after a fall at the Lilydale track, in the far eastern suburbs of Melbourne, on Tuesday night. Shannon wont be sure if the extent of the injuries would require surgery until he sees a specialist next week. He's out for the Victorian BMX Championships, which he was a good chance for the #1 in the 19 & Over class, and hopes to be back on his bike for the 2004 Track Attack late January. We wish him a rapid recovery.

13/11 What's up BMXVictoria?
Last year BMXVictoria priced entry fees for the Victorian BMX State Championships out of reach of large and not so well off families. We calculated they would make rather large profits and explained that the riders really need to know what is being done with their money. It seems that nothing has changed and BMXVictoria are paying the price. Entries are down on previous years and it's not hard to see why. 2003 was a big year in racing for most riders, riders had to qualify for the World Championships in Perth by competing at the Australian Championships in Adelaide first. The events were both financially and physically draining. There are a few riders on the injured list but there are many riders that just want a break and to expect them to pay large sums of money for the State Championships is just another reason for them to not race.
Let's take the Pro classes for example, BMXVictoria run Elite classes at their titles events. There's already enough confusion about UCI classes and how if you ride elite you must stay elite for 12 months, but I don't think it's obvious enough that it's a UCI class and not a UCI event, so the rule doesn't apply. Because the numbers are always low BMXV charge $77 per rider to cover costs. There's a $1000+ Pay Back pool, which is split between male and female classes. During the regular season it would cost about $30 for the same prize money. In the age classes it costs $93 for a rider to compete in 2 classes, it's no wonder why there are only about 80 or so riders racing in 20 inch and cruiser classes.
BMXVictoria needs to talk to riders and parents and find something that will attract more riders and still cover the costs of racing. Because the numbers are down there will be less riders, less finals, less competition and people wont see any value in spending that sort of money next time around. Why not run A and AA Pro at state level, NSW do. A pros would race for money rather than a title, while the AA riders compete for money and the state crown. The A pros would be able to compete in their regular classes and maybe recoupe some of their entry money in their final, racing will be closer because you could have older riders race in the A pro who may not be competitive as senior elite.
And why not reduce the entry fees and rethink the prizes so we can increase the level of competition and get this sport growing again in Victoria. After all the sport shouldn't be about making large profits from events or giving away big trophies, it should be about fun and competition.

13/11 Racing at Knox on Friday
There is a club race this Friday at Knox that might be worth checking out. For the amature classes it's pick a trophy night. Registration is at 6 pm and it's $5 per class. There's $100 prize pool plus payback for the following classes with a $10 entry and all riders must ride their age class as well.

12/11 New from Troy Lee Designs
New TLD products for 2004For the first time ever Troy Lee Designs have put together a MTB/BMX specific catalog for the 2004 product range, which showcases all the new products, including the updated D2 helmets, pad sets, number plates, race gear, casual wear and so much more. You can download the 48 page, 16Mb catalog in PDF format from the TLD website at http://www.troyleedesigns.com/extras.html, but it could take some time.
Some of their most popular items amongst BMXers will be the 3 new pad sets and new plate, as seen in the picture. We hear they should be available some time this month. Also, it looks like camo is in for 2004.
Check out the Troy Lee Designs website at www.troyleedesigns.com.

11/11 New Redline Flight Series
2004 Flight SeriesIt's the time of the year that manufacturers are releasing their 2004 model bikes. Redline have been in the business for 30 years now. To commemorate their milestone they have put a lot of effort into their BMX range. The very slick paint job with retro styling is just the beginning. The frame is U-6 pro-sized Aluminum with a euro sealed bottom bracket, it comes with 180mm "Flight" dual pinch bolt cranks, "Flight Cassette" sealed hubs and a bunch of other good components. You would hardly call Redline a leader in BMX technologies, it's all been done before, but because of it's name and size you will be able to pick up a well spec'd bike for a pretty good price.
The above photo is of, Victorian AA Pro, Adam Robb's bike, many of the parts have been changed. To see the Flight Series bikes and other offerings from Redline check out www.redlinebicycles.com.

10/11 BMXVictoria Interclub
Victoria's clubs battled for the #1 club at Lalor on Sunday and there were some fine performances. The Lalor track is shaping up pretty well with some new tweeks, it's now a lot faster and flowing better, it just needs some rolling to iron out some of the rougher sections and some sweeping to get rid of all that loose surface. Shepparton took out the relay, South Eastern went home victors and Levi Collins, from Shepparton, won the Pro/Am class. Matt Dunsworth had an unfortunate accident in the third straight during practice which resulted in a broken arm, wrist and collarbone as well as concussion, we wish him a speedy recovery.

10/11 Racegirl® Race Report: ABA Fall National ~Del Mar, California
Okay the weekend went down like this: There were about 270 motos on Saturday and Sunday, the girl racing action was pretty intense all weekend long and the fires in Cali showed it's smoke and ash.
The weather Saturday was just perfect for racing, but Sunday was full of smoke and ash due to the devastating California fires. First off, there was some major battling in the Girl Pro class. We had about 12 girls on Sat. and 10 on Sun. The race action was getting so intense that there were girls on the ground everywhere. Jill Kitner pulled off the wins both days with me coming in behind her and Arielle Martin pullin the 3rd on Sat. and Alice Jung with the 3rd on Sun. This class is going to be very interesting to watch @ the Grands. Don't count out the girls classes. There were some good moves being made in an effort to pull off some last chance wins. In 6 girls Jordan Nopens (Racegirl/Answer) pulled a pair of 3rds both days while her teammate Victoria Johnson snagged two 2nds in the tough 9 girls class and a 2nd and 3rd in 9-10 mixed open. These two are working their way up and watch these two along with the rest of the Racegirl/Answer team to be on fire @ grands. Alise Post was unstoppable continuing her winning streak with a triple-triple in mixed open, 12 girls, and 11-13 girl cruiser both days. Look for her to be on full force at grands along with these three girls in 13 girls: Racegirl Ambassador Terra Nichols(hurricanebmx.com), Katie West(Crupi), and Courtney Cole(TNK). They were elbow to elbow all weekend long. Terra was pushed of the track on Sat and ended up with the 8th, but she came back on Sun and took the win with a pair of 2nds in cruiser. Courtney crossed the line in 1st on Sat and 2nd on Sun. with Katie in 3rd on Sat. and 4th on Sun. In 14 girls Jessica Cisar(Redman/Yamaha Waverunner) and Racegirl Ambassador Mailani McNabb(Answer) were battling like usual. Cisar took the 1st both days and Mailani the 2nd. 15 girls continued the race action with Stephanie Higgins(Challenge Racing), Courtney Tomei(Free Agent/I.E. Bikes), and Ashley Caldwell (Redman). Courtney and Stephanie did the 'ol switcharoo, splitting the wins on Sat. and Sun. with Ashley coming in 3rd. Stephanie came back strong in cruiser and ran with a double in the tough 14-16 girl cruiser class. The battle in 16 girls was insane. With Kasey Martin(Staats) gone on Sat, the fast Amber French(Coats) took the win, but on Sun. Kasey was unbeatable. She took the win on Sun along with a 2nd in 14-16 girl cruiser. Cassie Bushnell(Puget Sound/FSA) showed up to Del Mar to dominate the 17-27 girl class and cruiser. Mark her up with a double-double.
I can't wait til the grands. Only 3 weeks left. There's gonna be some incredible racing in the girls classes so watch out!! Stay safe, train hard and have fun!

07/11 Tasmanian titles, 2 views
We have received two different views of what happened at the Tasmanian State Championships last weekend, so thought we'd post them both. They are both from Victorian riders who went to the event.
Here's what ladies cruiser rider Petina Pert had to say:
Tasmania results were:
Ladies Cruiser
1st Christine Kelly
2nd Petina Pert
3rd Michelle Ellis (Launceston)
4th Nicole Forster
Brian Kelly got 1st in 35-39 cruiser class
Brock Forster got 1st in 9 Boys 20" and 8-10 Cruiser
Taylor Baldi got 1st in 15 Boys
Ashleigh Gunn kicked butt in the combined sprockets 5-7 class and won every moto.
Darren May won his cruiser class also.
Colin Forster and Dave Cleary battled it out in 30-34 Cruiser.
Basically the Vics did really well.

Here's Nathan May's view of the titles:
Sproket Rocket Asleigh Gunn had a gun of a weekend taking out all of her motos in true style. Young gun Brock Forster was on fire taking 17 of 18 motos which gave him top position in both his classes, this kid will be one to watch in the up and coming Victorian state titles. Cara Forster was riding consistently until a fall put her out for a moto on day 1 but she come back on day to to take 3rd place in the 10-16 girls. Taylor Baldi took the #1 plate in style taking all motos, young Taylor has shown a lot of improvment in the past month or so. Nathan May and Jarred Kahl both took a crash in a moto the both recoverd to be on the podium Nathan 1st Jarred 2nd. In the 19+ men this was a action pack race for the top spot. 4 guys in contetion going into day 2 but Robb Slatter the new guy to AA took the win from Levi Collins by 1 point, Brian Slatter claimed 3rd spot. In the 30-34 20' Gary Morgan shown the guys why he is well respected in bmx, he took the win. Dave Cleary was riding well, he took 3rd place over all. Andrew Dennis is getting some skills together to back his speed now, I think he ended up in 4th. Chris Malloy was riding well when he kept it up right i think he got 6th with Trevor Weber in for 7th. 15-16 crusier Jarred Kahl looked the goods early but he had to settle for 2nd place. In the 30-34 crusier Jock Kelly took the win Colin Forster was riding well he got the 2nd from Dave Cleary for 3 and Andrew Dennis in for 5th. Darren May recoverd from a stripped hub out of the gate in a moto to take the win. In the ladies class Christine Kelly took the win comfortably Petina Pert and Nicole Forster were riding strong all weekend.

06/11 DK Grand Nationals highlights
At the beginning of the Grands on Sunday, Warwick Wheeler, the guy behind BMXPress Mag and BMXCentral TV show announced that next years series will have hunge incentives for the AA Pro classes. The 2004 #1 Men's AA-Pro will walk away with a 2004 Yamaha YZ250s and the 2004 #1 Female Pro will walk away with $5000. This is huge for Australian BMX and for the pro scene, expect to see some great racing next year all over the country.
I'm not sure what the NSW riders have been doing in their spare time, but it looked like someone has been training them to front flip. Supercross/Freak Industries A Pro rider Ryan Carter was looking the goods in the A Pro a clear favourite for the main until it all went horribly wrong in his third moto. Winning to the big double in the first straight, Ryan launched while the others rolled through. On his way down Charles Nelson managed to make up ground and Ryan's back wheel landed on Charles's handlebars which threw him flipping forward into one of the nastiest falls I have ever witnessed, he fell a long way and with a lot of speed. I'm pretty sure you'll be seeing it on BMXCentral.
It all went wrong for Brett Barnes while leading his Bruiser Cruiser final, while manualling a fairly basic double his back wheel bucked him and over the bars he went. We believe he's broken two ribs. Earlier in the Bruiser Cruiser final Wayne Flint, who was an equal favourite with Brett for the win crashed out allowing Dean Coles to win the main in true Steven Bradbury style. Glenn Suridge who would have been the outside favourite had to settle for second.
Luke Madill took the double, that guy is on fire at the moment, winning both AA Pro and Pro open. Scott Taylor followed up his results from Easfield and was looking pretty good against a stacked field, expect to see a lot more of Scott on the podium. Melissa Mankowski is also riding well taking out the AA Pro women's class.
In the A Pro there were only two gates, and the racing was tough, there were no real stand out riders, pretty much any of them could have made the main. When it came to the finals two Victorian riders really stepped it up. Ahron Jeffree and Joseph Bujak have both been improving in leaps and bounds over the past few months. They will be names to look out for in the near future.
