28/02 Sirius Sports/Staats Bicycles Liverpool
Race Report
Sirius Sports/Staats Bicycles Press release
Sirius Sports/Staats Bicycles team riders, Chelsea King, Wyatt Clinch,
& Wayne Pottow returned from Liverpool (Australia) Monday with a very
noticeable swagger… & rightfully so! All three performed better
than expected & their collective confidence will no doubt be riding
high as they prepare for the Northern Region Championships to be staged
at the East City track, in Auckland (New Zealand).
The Liverpool track was very impressive… & very big compared
to the tracks in NZ. The first straight is fast & requires a good
gate & plenty of power to get you into the first turn in good position
for the double & step-up on the much shorter back straight.
After the second smallish turn you enter the biggest straight on the track.
It begins with a good-size double, followed by a large roller, massive
step-up, & ends with a double into a tight 180 turn.
Then comes a fast, flowing rhythm section made up of a step-up, three
rollers, another step-up, roller, tabletop, & lastly a single roller.
We all marvelled at Jon-Jon Hoare (BMXUltra.com/One Bicycles) as he would
manual the whole straight with ease but freaked when he jumped from the
second step-up to the backside of the next roller… awesome skills
Jon-Jon!!!
The last straight is a dirt jumper’s dream & is made up of a
step-up & three small doubles, all with a vertical take-off &
landing. In spite of this the jumps are very mellow between the take-off
& the landing, making them easy for the younger riders to pump and/or
manual. Liverpool BMX Club have done a great job of designing a really
fun, but challenging track.
Now onto the racing, Chelsea & the Aussie No 1, Madison Janssen would
go at it all day long. Madison would prove too fast for Chelsea on the
day & they would finish 1st & 2nd respectively in 20” (10
Girls). However it was Chelsea who would have the last word with an awesome
ride & fantastic passing manoeuvre in the third turn of their final
to give her the win. Although Chelsea was one of the youngest riders in
the Junior Ladies Cruiser class, she & Madison would once again dominate
their competition, who were often several years older than they are! And
although I was confident Chelsea would finish 2nd overall it wasn’t
to be, as the older girls put the squeeze on her in the final relegating
her to a respectable 4th place finish.
Wyatt was smokin’… peeling riders left & right! He rode
well in both 20” & Cruiser & he too looked like a lock for
a top two finish in both classes. And if not for a poor gate start in
both of his finals, I’m certain he would have achieved that. I’ve
seen Wyatt ride many times now & when he’s on, he’s very
hard to run down. But in his Cruiser final he uncharacteristically slammed
the gate at the start, which put him squarely behind the eight ball for
the duration of his race. He would finish with a 4th place but Wyatt would
tell you that even that was a disappointing result by his standards. Unfortunately
for Wyatt he would not have the greatest of starts in his 20” final
either. After only a day of practise Wyatt was jumping everything at the
track. And in his qualifying motos he was one of only a few riders his
age jumping the back straight. But as he could not get a clear run up
to the jumps he would have to pump them & pedal to keep his speed
up. Wyatt finished with a 3rd place & the signs are good that he will
go on to have a good NZ nationals next month.
It was Wayne who proved to be the “Dark Horse” & he put
in some very strong rides in his qualifying motos. I felt certain he too
would finish with a top 3 placing & if not for a burly crash at the
first turn of his final, he would have achieved that. Although Wayne never
actually fell of his bike, one of the riders directly involved in the
crash slid out & clipped his back wheel as he rode around the carnage
& that was enough for him to clip out & come to a stop in order
to get under control. By that time the front riders had achieved enough
separation so that Wayne would not improve on a 5th place finish.
All in all it was a successful trip for the team riders & I couldn’t
have been prouder of them.

25/02 MCS Bicycles Press Release
by MCS Bicycles (www.mcsbicycles.com)
SSA Event - Jacksonville, Florida
On
February 18th thru 20th, 2005, the MCS Factory Team was in Jacksonville,
Florida for rounds 5 and 6 of the Florida State Series. We had an AWESOME
weekend winning both days of team competition. Individual stand outs were
Jonathan "Mosquito" Suarez winning Pro Men and Amanda Geving
winning Pro Girls, both days. On the Amateur side of things Jonathan Villa
double-doubled with wins in class and 16 and over open both days. Our
little guys, Bryan Kipp and Aaron Cartwright, had a rougher time of things
in JAX. Kipper won 3 out of 4 taking a 2nd in class on Saturday. Aaron
won class on Sunday, while having to settle for 2nd on Saturday.
We had a great time in Jacksonville! The track was really good and the weather couldn't have been any better. The size of the race was a little on the low side with right around 120 moto's each day. The Jacksonville parents group really put on a nice event. We can't wait to go back!
As always we would like to thank our cosponsors, they are Answer, Odyssey, Profile, Sun Rims, ATI, Maxxis, UGP, Hammer, ACS, Cane Creek and Diatech.

24/02 Clash of the Titans: Naughty Girls and
more
By BMXUltra.com
The
Park Orchards Clash of the Titans is on again this year after the club
gave their premier event a rest in 2004, and it's on this Sunday.
Freelance photographer Gavin D (www.gavind.com.au)
and Naughty Boy Energy drinks (www.naughtyboy.com.au)
have the naming rights, but what does that mean to BMX?
Gavin told us there will be a DJ who will be rockin' out some cool tunes,
so don't worry riders, you won't be hearing any golden oldie classic hits
this Sunday. Parents, save it for the car trip!
Here's one for the boys, The Naughty Girls will be out promoting the Naughty
Boy/Naughty Girl Energy Drinks.
We heard a rumour a while ago that there will be a celeb's race, which
could include Neighbours stars, but were unable to confirm.
Do you need another reason you should head down to Park Orchards? The
Park Orchards track will be the last chance you can race challenging track
in Victoria between now and the Australian Championships over Easter,
and as per usual the track crew will have it as smooth as a billiard table.
24/02 Victorian Titles Changes
By BMXUltra.com
If you haven't had your say about the proposed changes to the Victorian
titles, by changing the pro classes to A/AA and opening up the titles,
there's not much time left. Make sure you voice your opinion soon. Email
webmaster@bmxultra.com
Here are a few more responses to the changes for the 2005 State
titles.
Glenn Suridge (30-34 cruiser) South Eastern, Victoria
What I am about to say might upset some people, but that's what opinions
tend to do, if we can have pro riders sandbagging and dropping back to
age classes, taking away plates from the riders who compete in the age
class all year round, surely we can open the state titles.
If you have been to open title events in Canberra, Tasmania or South Australia
you have already expressed your opinion about open title events. You are
obviously for them.
If we open up the Victorian State Titles it will generate more riders
which means more money, which should lead to cheaper entry fees.
I have been in the sport for 18 years, I've seen riders come and go in
that time, I have seen a time when Victorian riders were dominant. In
recent times, the last 5 or so years, it seems that the Victorian BMX
scene has been continuing on a downward spiral as far as numbers of entries
and the level of competition. By opening the Vic titles I really think
it will bring a healty level of competition for our riders. This way we
can improve the level of competition and improve our riders, who knows
maybe it will turn things around and help put Victoria back on top, as
it once was. Bring back the excitement rather than have the regular riders
winning the same old classes.
Paul Tomkinson (A Pro) The Cove, South Australia
I have been reading all the comments about whether or not to open the
Vic state titles. I hope that this debate hasn't come about because of
low rider numbers because this is not a long term solution to the problem.
I don't think that any state titles should be open. Sure opening the titles
may increase numbers and competion in the short term but will not fix
the long term problem of decreasing rider numbers and may infact harm
the sport further. I was once a young kid trying and missing out on a
state plate by one point and I was devistated but I think if I had known
that one or more riders in that final was from interstate I would have
been even more upset and discouraged. I can see an argument for the A/AA
pro classes being open though because you want to try and have the best
riders riding in the pinacle race at any race meeting. I would doubt that
opening the state titles would raise numbers that much anyway as I did
not notice a huge number increase last year at our state titles except
the fact we were able to have A and AA pro instead of 14 + men. The people
running the sport should may be take a look at what Mackay BMX club did
with promoting the sport at local schools. Sure you may not be able to
do exactly what they did but even if you were able to put a notice in
there school newsletter so kids know BMX racing exists it's a start. Ask
most kids on the street what BMX means to them and I bet they talk about
dirt jumping or riding skate parks and don't even know BMX racing is even
around !!!!! In the story from Mackay they said
they reached about 2000 kids, if they get 50 new members out of that then
thats great considering that there is probably clubs around Australia
that don't even have that many members. Imagine if every club in Australia
could increase their members by even 20 over the next year, what a difference
that would make and I bet then there wouldn't be any talk of open state
titles and we might be able to show sponsors that there is a future in
BMX racing. Who knows we might be able to get back to days where we have
major companies sponsoring our national titles and may even get our pro's
on T.V promoting there sponsors products to they can actuly make a living
from a great sport.
23/02 Woman gets $1.4m over teen (BMX) accident
By BMXUltra.com
This was plastered all over the news websites yesterday and presumably
all over Australian news papers today. The article could be a devastating
blow to BMX in Australia. Is your BMX track safe for general use, or will
your local council decide it's too much of a risk? It is unfortunate for
Ms Rigby that she has to live with the consequences of the incident. BMX
tracks are isolated environments which statistics will show are safer
for cyclists than busy streets which could enable riders to reach much
faster speeds than a starting hill on a BMX track, but if you add vehicles
to the equation you have a recipe for more serious injuries or even fatalities.
Read on and let us know what you think, email webmaster@bmxultra.com
By Kylie Williams (Full
article on The Brisbane Courier-Mail)
A WOMAN left brain damaged in a BMX accident as a teenager was awarded
almost $1.4 million in damages today.
Rhiannon Rigby, now 23, successfully sued Shellharbour City Council and
South Lake BMX Club in the NSW Supreme Court over an accident at an Albion
Park BMX track on November 11, 1995.
Ms Rigby decided to ride down the starting ramp of the track after being
dared by her then best friend who refused to do the same.
The then 13-year-old lay in a coma for nine days after crashing on her
face as she went over the first hump of the track.
She sustained permanent frontal lobe brain damage despite wearing a helmet.
Justice John Dunford found both defendants were negligent because they
failed to fence off the starting pad and ramp on the track which was used
to secure even starts during competitions.
"Such fencing would not be disproportionately expensive and would
have prevented the plaintiff approaching the first jump at such high speed
and this would probably have prevented her fall, or at least rendered
it much less catastrophic," he said.
However, Justice Dunford reduced the payout by 20 per cent because he
said Ms Rigby had known of a previous accident at the track only a few
years earlier where a man had died.
She had also been warned by her parents not to ride on the track, he said.
"Her parents had told her not to go on the BMX track because they
considered it dangerous and she rode down the ramp as a result of a dare
by her friend who was not prepared to do likewise, presumably because
of the apparent danger," Justice Dunford said.
Ms Rigby, who is now the mother of a one-year-old daughter, has had trouble
remaining in employment and was asked to leave her school in Year 11,
although not formally expelled, because of disabilities resulting from
the accident, Justice Dunford said.
"I am satisfied that the plaintiff exhibits a number of symptoms
common to persons suffering traumatic frontal lobe damage including change
of personality, lack of insight, disinhibited behaviour, lack of planning,
organisation and motivation, concrete thinking and some difficulties with
memory ...," he said.
Justice Dunford ordered the two defendants each pay half of the $1,373,992
damages.

22/02 BMXPros.com Race Report
BMXPros.com press release
ABA Winter Nationals Phoenix, Arizona
Round 4 of the 2005 ABA Pro Series national event was the first outdoor
race of the season and just like the last outdoor event the ABA held (ABA
Fall Nationals), they ran into some of the worst weather conditions that
they could. This time though, it seems that the ABA and the staff from
the Black Mountain track were ahead of the game with taking some precautions.
While the Phoenix track crew had tarps and kept the track in the best
shape that they could, many riders decided not to race at the ABA Winter
nationals, as mother nature had a slight upper hand on the fight to keep
the track dry.
As some riders took a look at the weather channel before hand or at the
actual rain once they arrived to Phoenix, there were a few Pros and armatures
who decided just not to hit the track. Randy Stumpfhauser loves to race
no matter what the conditions and it seems the rain or mud didn't slow
him down all that much over the course of the weekend. Here is how Randy
finished up in the main events.
Randy Stumpfhauser has always been a consistent racer
and Phoenix was a showcase of his consistency. On Saturday, Stumpy was
in both the AA Pro and Pro Cruiser main events, where he finished up 3rd
in both. The ABA scorers were just able to read his Tangent Number plate
as he crossed the line with the mud. On Sunday, it was another 3rd in
AA Pro but he bumped up his finish in Pro Cruiser to a 1st place. Randy
hopes to have a bit better of racing conditions next weekend as he will
travel to Las Vegas, along with the other Double A Marketing Pros for
the 2nd round of the NBL 2005 Pro Series. Randy's sponsors include GT
Bicycles, Hyundai, ODI, Kenda, Fly, Tangent, Fox Racing, Smith, Sun Ringle,
Bombshell Forks, Profile, DC Shoes, AC, Thomson, Powerbar, CTI Knee Braces,
Tool Shed, Marwi, SDG, S & M, Cyto Sport/Cyto Max, and BMXpros.com
BMXPros.com proudly represents Kyle Bennett, Cristian Becerine, Wade Bootes,
Dale Holmes, Christophe Leveque, Brandon Meadows, John Parker, and Randy
Stumpfhauser. For more information on any of the riders, or questions
abut sponsorship of any of the athletes, please visit www.BMXpros.com.
21/02 Warragul race report
By
BMXUltra.com
Warragul was the location for this years Royal Children's Hospital fund
raiser. The weather was warm and a little humid and the track was fast,
although a little slippery in the flatter than usual corners.
If you hadn't picked up on the vibe Warragul is Old School! The track
remains untouched by modern BMX with short straights, a single jump per
straight, tight flat corners, 6 lane start gate and a manual pedal mechanism
dropping the gate.
Since I rediscovered the Warragul track about 2 years ago, thanks to Danny
Galea, I have made a point of getting to the races there. Some say to
relive my childhood, but I think it's more than that, the track and it's
environment create a relaxed and fun atmosphere that I haven't experienced
anywhere else. The Royal Children's Hospital fund raiser was no exception.
To try to raise some extra money for the RCH we pushed for a Vet Pro class
which would help raise additional money for the appeal, with all the entry
fees being donated to the RCH, and let the 30+ class riders battle it
out on familiar territory. This managed to draw former Australian Champions,
Brian Kelly and David Cleary back to the track to show their support.
Mountain biker Brendon Billings and Andrew Dennis also had a chance to
experience the class for the first time. They would take on Shane Jenkins
and Derek Harris, who are more seasoned riders in the class. There was
only enough riders for a full gate, and when the dust had settled it was
Jenkins who came away with the clean sweep. Billings, Cleary and Kelly
battled it out for second, Billings was the more consistant of the three
and finished just ahead of Cleary. Kelly left before the final round with
a flared injury, but just may have caused a very different result.
The Pro Open (14&Over pro) class attracted 2 gates of riders headed
up by AA Pros Robert Slatter and David Page, A Pro's Shannon Rademaker,
Connor Hunter, Gary Morgan, Matt Vickers and Shane Jenkins (allowed to
compete in both classes because of the fund raiser). All riders were encouraged
to use platform pedals for the event, and while some riders struggled
it was interesting to see who took full advantage. In the motos it was
all Slatter, Jenkins and Morgan. A bit of useless trivia here is that
Morgan and Jenkins are both in the 35 to 39 age bracket and both riders
use platform pedals all year round. In the final Slatter got the better
start with Morgan and Jenkins in tow. Mean while David Page decided he
liked the looks of the first corner as a launching ramp and transferred
to the third corner. Back to racing. Exiting the first corner and Slatter
nudged ahead of Morgan, Jenkins tried to force his way into second but
Morgan held his ground. Slatter had Morgan breating down his neck in the
third corner with Jenkins also in striking distance. Morgan took the corner
too fast and ended up in a flat spin, allowing Slatter to pull ahead and
Jenkins to slot into second. Connor Hunter moved into third with Rademaker
taking fourth.
After the final Slatter was heard suggesting he might go back to platforms
full time.

21/02 Warragul official report/results
by Greg Siinmaa
The Warragul Royal Children's Hospital fund raiser was a great meeting.
I don't know about you but we think it went off really well. Thanks for
all the support that BMXUltra gave the event.
First of all we would like to thank all the Vet Pro Class and the 14 Plus
class for donating ALL thier prize money to the Victorian Royal Childrens
Hospital Appeal.
The Western Park BMX Club would like to thank all the riders and officials
that made the day a huge success. It is so hearting to see that Victorians
know how to have fun and partake in the spirit of the event. Special thanks
goes to Jenny Dawson the president of Western Park and her helpers. Denise
Siinmaa would like to make special mention of John Sturzaker ( commentary),
Craig Slatter (starter who only came in the hope of being able to run
old school starts) and John Grigg (finish line) who shared with us thier
invaluable OLD SCHOOL experience. There are a few others that should be
mentioned : Melinder Hindson, John Lithgow, Robyn Kelly on all call ups
in staging. Yvonne Anderson, Pam Vickers and Barrie Vickers on scoring.
Bill Kelly and Steve Hunter on race control. and also John Grigg, Larry
(the man) Bensch and Carol Gedeye on the finish line. Thanks also goes
to John McNeil, Graeme Anderson, Andrew McNeil and his mates, Tom Siinmaa,
Tim Anderson, Nick and most of all Coates Hire for the Track preparation.
Hey wouldn't it be great to see some more old school races at Warragul
in the future? Maybe a prelude to the Track Attack in January or something?
We raised about $700, after expenses, which will go to the RCH appeal.
THANK YOU EVERYBODY.

21/02 Park Orchards/Eastfield entry forms
by BMXUltra.com
If you are hunting for entry forms for upcoming races in Victoria
like the Park Orchards Clash of the Titans or Eastfield Autum Supernationals
click here to check out the race calendar
and download the entry forms.
I haven't worked out why all of Victoria's races have followed a trend
of running 4 qualifying races instead of the traditional 3. Is there a
problem with people having the afternoon to themselves or is there a good
reason to keep them at the track longer?
BMXVictoria have cut about $5 from entry fees across the board with the
Autumn Supernationals in an effort to make the meeting more affordable
and to try to generate additional entries. Don't forget to show your support
for this positive move by BMXVictoria.
19/02 Hyper leads the way with new transition
sized frame designs
Hyper Press release
Carlsbad, California – Two-time NBL National #1 team and
the current leader of both the ABA and NBL Factory Team title battles,
Factory Hyper Bicycles, isn’t content to just lead the points race.
Hyper wants to be the #1 frame brand in BMX as well. The best way to do
that is to listen to what the customer asks for, then deliver it. Hyper
has done just that with its new ’05 Assault frame line. The Hyper
design crew developed their bikes with input from a team overflowing with
National #1’s, NAG #1’s, and World #1’s, built the bikes
in their own factory, and are still selling them for under $280. Make
sure you check out Hyper’s 2005 line of BMX Assault vehicles. The
following are just two new innovations that Hyper is using to raise the
BMX bar.
One
of the most difficult stages for a racer is between the ages of 10-13.
Riders in this age range grow at such different rates - height-wise, weight-wise,
and skill-wise. The Hyper Design Team created it’s “Transition
Series” to specifically target these riders’ needs. Designed
to accommodate riders of varying heights and weights, with the “Transition
Series” you can say goodbye to “morphodite” frame set
ups.
Sometimes, a growing racer can get heavier without getting taller, outgrow
the average Expert XL, but still doesn’t need a longer bike. Or
maybe, a rider on a normal Expert XL is starting to jump big sections
and needs a beefier set-up. For this, Hyper created its Assault Jr. Pro,
ridden by ABA World Champ 13 Expert Lahsaan Kobza. Normal Expert XL’s
are set up for a 1 3/8” wheelset. When you throw on a set of 1.5”
wheels on an Expert XL, the frame geometry is significantly changed and
the bike will not perform as designed. The geniuses at Hyper set up the
Assault Jr Pro to use a 1.5” wheelset to keep the bike performing
as designed. It retains the same geometry as Hyper’s normal Assault
Expert XL but utilizes the Pro-series tubeset and allows for 1 1/8”
forks to create a much stronger setup. With a top tube length of 19.75,
chainstay length starting at 13”, bottom bracket height at 11”,
and weighing in at under 3.5 lbs, the Assault Jr Pro is ready to rock
Another problem area involves racers that get taller but don’t necessarily
need a beefier bike. Girl racers are perfect examples of riders that don’t
need heavy duty components. With this in mind, the Hyper crew developed
the Assault Pro-Lite, the frame of choice for UCI 12 Expert and 12 Cruiser
World Champ and Canadian National #1, Tory Nyhaug and ABA National #1
Girl and Girl Cruiser, Alise Post. The same geometry nightmares occur
when you throw a 1 3/8” wheelset on a Pro-sized bike that is designed
for a 1.5” wheelset. To eliminate this, the Pro Lite is set up for
a 1 3/8” wheelset to keep the geometry in check so the rider can
race the bike as it was designed to perform. The Pro-Lite uses the same
geometry as Hyper’s normal Pro-sized frame but utilizes a much smaller
tubeset and is set up for 1” forks to keep the weight down. With
a 20.5” top tube, chainstay length starting at 14.5” and a
11.75” bottom bracket height, the Assault Pro-Lite can handle all
that your growing racer can throw at it.
Add in Hyper’s standard features that include ultra-lightweight
7005 double-butted tubing, internal headset technology, Quadribox chainstays,
and 4D dropouts and you have the makings of two mean performers to take
your racers riding to the next level. Check yours out at a Hyper Dealer
near you or at the next ABA or NBL national you hit up, where you can
see Hyper Factory riders dominating the competition.

18/02 MCS Factory Team - Dothan, AL
MCS Press Release
Well the cold weather that was supposed to happen, never really did. For
those of you that haven't been to Dothan, let me tell you, it is a really
nice facility. The people were really nice, the racing was great. Tom
Ritz from the NBL built this crazy last straight that really mixed up
the racing, and a few riders for that matter. The moto count was a little
low with 88 moto's on Saturday, and dropping a few on Sunday.
The MCS Factory Team made the trip up, and we had an AWESOME time! In
team competition we did very well winning both days. By the end of the
weekend we had all of our riders airing out the huge table on the first
straight. Aaron Cartwright and Bryan Kipp were combined in cruiser on
Sunday and it was so cool to see them jumping that table side by side.
As far as our finishes go; in AA/A Pro Mosquito finished with a second
and a first. Amanda Geving won 3 out of four winning her first race as
a "Professional." 33 Expert Raul Gomez and 11 Expert Bryan Kipp
double-doubled with wins in class and cruiser both days. 18 Expert Jonathan
Villa netted a 1st and a 2nd in Class, and a 3rd and a 4th in 16 and over
open. Lastly, our 10X Aaron Cartwright killed it in class winning both
days, as well as, winning cruiser on Saturday and taking a 2nd behind
Kipp in cruiser on Sunday.
That's about it from our camp. As always we would like to thank our cosponsors,
they are Answer, Odyssey, Profile, Sun Rims, Hot Shoppe, ATI, UGP, Hammer,
Cane Creek, ACS, Maxxis and Diatech.
18/02 2005 Victorian Titles
By Graeme Anderson
In late 2004 I wrote a strong letter voicing my concerns about the
impending disaster that was the 2004 Victorian State Championships. My
letter was instigated by the poor organisation of the Inter club event
which is the pre titles event conducted on the same track as the States.
At around the same time several others also wrote about their own concerns.
Firstly I am pleased to acknowledge that BMXV took the criticism on the
chin then made many of the changes that where required to get the States
over the line. The racing and the track where great and most other issues
where addressed. Well Done BMXV
My philosophy is unless you are willing to pitch in and help then you
should shut up and accept what you get. Therefore I am now obliged to
follow my own rules. The Event Management Group is the group responsible
for much of the planning for the state titles. I have attended two of
their meetings so far and now have joined with Greg & Denise Siinmaa
to become the promotion and sponsorship committee for the 2005 Victorian
State Championships.
In the short time I have been involved with the EMG it has become clear
that there is plenty happening behind the scenes to ensure we all have
an enjoyable experience at Portland this year. BMXV are willing to listen
to every opinion on the key issues. A good example of this is the discussions
earlier this month about the option of opening the event up to riders
from outside Victoria. If you have an opinion, write in and tell us.
If you are interested in supporting the event financially or in some other
way please let us know. Talk to Greg, Denise or myself at any race meeting
or by email to graemeanderson@tpg.com.au
or gsiinmaa@vtown.com.au

grounds. A web poll about the Elite class & a small write up. As it
gets closer to the Nationals I will be updating the page with more and
more updates.

Staats/EAGL BMX Press release
After 4 years with the Answer team and a decade of friendship I want to
send a vote of thanks for all the support, the laughs, and the people
who have made a difference in my life, especially Joey Licata. I also

I am sad to be moving on but sooooooo excited about the new colors I will

17/02 Warragul Royal Children's Hospital update
By BMXUltra.com
We just heard that BMX people won't have to make a gold coin
donation for parking at the BMX track, all you have to do is mention at
the gate that you are there for the BMX racing, so parking is FREE.
The local bike shop Warragul Sports will have a small pro shop with the
basics like tubes and tyres and some other stuff.
There hasn't been a huge number of entries so far, please remember that
this is a fund raiser for the Royal Children's Hospital, and will be a
great day of racing. If you are still keen to head down there and haven't
entered yet, they have decided to take phone entries until an hour before
the event starts (that's up until 10am Sunday). Don't leave it until the
last minute when you can contact the club after hours (6pm to 9pm) on
03 5127 5744 or 0409 006 073.
Don't forget that Bayswater Cycles/Cyclelink.com.au will be donating prizes
for an Old-school award and the fastest rider on platforms. I believe
they have a Comp III tyre and a chain ring bag for their prizes.
Have fun and don't forget to race on your platforms to experience the
way Warragul should be raced.
17/02 Victorian State Titles changes
By Shane Jenkins
The discussion about opening the Victorian state titles seems to have
stirred up a lot more opinion than whether it should be A/AA Pro over
elite classes. It's no surprise, since opening the state titles clearly
effects more than just the A/AA Pro class. It seems unanimous that the
classes should in fact be A/AA Pro to ensure larger classes and give the
riders more competition and put some prestige back into winning the #1
pro crown. You could say the same for opening up the event, but people
seem to be taking it a little more personally than that. I think they
have been a little spoiled. It has been easier in the past few years to
win a title, or even a #1, since every rider is awarded a plate regardless
of where they finish. When I started BMX in 1981, there were far more
riders then than there are now and there were far fewer classes. With
in excess of 60 riders in each class if you made it to the top 8 you were
doing well. With only 6-8 riders able to make it through to the main it
meant just about any combination of the 60+ riders would be able to make
the main, because the competition was so tight. This prepared Victorian
riders for any interstate onslaught, because at one point there Victoria
was the dominant state in Australia, and quite some time before it was
knocked off it's perch.
What am I trying to say? People who complain about opening the titles
seem to worry that titles will walk out of the state, is that because
our riders just can't cut it? There may be other ways to generate more
exciting racing within our state, like reduce the number of classes, cut
trophies back to only top 3, give only 8 plates, which would allow you
to reduce the entry fees, making it more affordable. When you are talking
about such dramatic changes it's because people are concerned about the
future of the State Titles and the lack of support over the past few years,
it is positive that the state association also show concern about the
future of our sport. Put your personal feelings aside and consider what
is good for increasing head count at the state titles, if it's not opening
the event, then what is it?
Remember, if you want to have your say, speak up soon. BMXVictoria have
to make a decision soon, so they can start the hard work of planning for
the event.
Here are a few more responses to the changes for the 2005 State
titles.
Brett MaliC (Vet pro/Bruiser cruiser) Happy Valley, South
Australia
Ah yes...those dreaded Victorian OPEN State Titles words. "Opening
the State Titles means two things: bigger meeting/more riders/more competition
and rider development, there is nothing more important than developing
our riders as we freewheel towards the 2008 Olympics"
The Pros and Cons of Opening a State Titles:
Pros
Cons
You make you own mind up!!!
In 2004, South Australia opened their TITLES for the first time, basically
it was to put the "THUMP" back into an SA event that had lost
the prestige, excitement and exhilaration. The other contributing factor
was that SA didn't have a large race meeting that attracted interstate
riders. (That is apart from the Aussie Titles and SA vs. VIC challenge.)
SABMXA believed that the interest generated would hopefully put the Titles
back on the map as the State's big race meting of the year and it worked.
SA also vetoed the 14+ OPEN CLASS for the controversial VET PRO, AA and
A PRO classes. That decision payed off as it attracted not only more South
Australian riders, but also drew interstate riders to these new classes.
Speaking of support, to Dave Smith, you stated recently on BMXUltra.com
that "the reaction seemed to be most (nearly all) SA riders"
you talked to, were negative to the State titles being open event. I can
assure you they are the minority of SA plate holders concerned that if
there are more riders in their class they may have to try harder to keep
their plate. To those SA riders...you are not just riding BMX, it is a
race, it is a competition, stop complaining and ride harder!
Let me emphasize that the preconceived rumours for the 2004 SA STATE TITLES
of the massive influx of VIC riders and the absence of boycotting SA riders
because of this did not happen. These were all rumours started by a couple
of paranoid parents scared of change, they decided to criticize the concept
instantly, instead of supporting it.
Riders considered the South Australian State Titles as "just another
meeting". I know this because I like to get to other clubs and talk
to riders and parents. I also ride, eavesdrop around the track, and visit
other clubs. The contributing factors point to: the sport has low numbers,
race meeting are boring, there are too many small race series during the
year and not enough bigger ones, Pro interest has dropped and the State
titles or even the Aussie titles are held at the wrong time of year.
Me thinks that these are "matters a State or National governing body
have to address and maybe change".
Which brings me to my favourite argument against opening a state championships
"It has always been closed, why change it now". This is a traditional
argument that would have had some substance in the 80's and early 90's
because BMX then had the large numbers and every thing was "cool
man", but now BMX has to compete against the evil KAOS of 4X, MTB,
nifty 50's, playstation, x box, computers, footy, cricket, soccer, netball
and the frightening girlfriend / boyfriend distraction. Numbers are low
and continually decreasing.
Let's face it new concepts that threaten the old are always met with criticism,
however this sport is slowly dying and we need new concepts. OPENING the
states is one of them.
Give the concept of OPEN a go, if interstate riders do ride, isn't that
a good thing. Your son or daughter will be racing against interstate riders
and competing for that spot in the final, isn't that better than riding
in a STATE TITLE that hasn't got the numbers to make up a final or even
an age class. The State Titles are what the STATE bodies want them to
be. If they put in the effort they will be successful, if they don't,
it's like riding a local meeting. But they need the support from you to
get this sport back on its feet or would you prefer BMX to be stagnant
and slowly fade away?
If you like the latter, then maybe you're the one that's are killing this
sport. Maybe consider lawn bowls or truck chasing as an alternative. It's
up to you.
Janine Kozulins (Parent) Sunbury
I agree with the opinions expressed by Simon Anderson, Dave Smith
(Park Orchards) and Paul Pretlove (W'Bool). I thought the Victorian State
Titles were called this for one reason and that was to sort out the best
riders in each class in Victoria - not Australia! Surely that is why we
have the Australian titles so that the best riders from each state can
battle it out. Also, as previously pointed out only the very best riders
from say South Australia would be bothered to attend and then we have
Victorian State Titles plates say 1V, 2V etc going interstate. Leave the
Victorian State Titles for Victorian riders.

15/02 David Cleary gets hitched
By Shane Jenkins
David
Cleary (owner of Glenroy Cycles, two times Australian 25-29 Cruiser champion,
owner of all the old
school bikes/frame that we took photos of last month and a guy I have
done more BMX road trips with than probably anyone else) married his long
time girlfriend Kerri Rowse in a traditional ceremony on Saturday afternoon.
Dave, as he is known to his friends, looked a little different to usual.
His hat was missing, his long hair was down and he was wearing his family
tartan, that's right...a kilt.
Other BMXers in attendance were AA Pro Robert Slatter, A Pros Brian Slatter,
Ahron Jeffree as well as old schoolers Trevor and Ruth Weber and John
Mills.
I would personally like to wish Dave and Kerri all the best for the future.

14/02 Bootes & Codega Team up in Mackay
Two
times United States ABA Champion, Wade Bootes teamed up with Brisbane
based Glen Codega and traveled to the east coast city of Mackay to conduct
a number of coaching clinics and Primary School visits. Both having been
BMX World Champions at some time during each of their careers, they know
what it’s like to be popular and the desire of kids half their age,
but nothing could prepare them for the enthusiasm they were about to encounter.
Both Glen and Wade were approached at the Gold Coast Nationals over the
Christmas period by the Mackay BMX Club who were keen to promote BMX Racing
to local schools to get as many new riders as they could to the BMXQ initiated
State Wide Sign On Day held Feb 13th.
Having just commenced club racing for the year the week before, it was
a great way for the Mackay riders to get back into it. Over 70 club riders
attended the Boots/Codega coaching clinics in some of Mackay’s most
tropical weather. The Channel 7 sports reporter got wind of the boys visit
and dropped into the track at lunchtime between swimming and cricket stories
to give the sport a plug. All the young riders were desperately trying
to get into the picture as Glen tried to keep a straight face. The weekend
of coaching ended with a gym session at the local Star Bodies Gym where
Glen & Wade put the older riders through a tough workout. And even
though riders from 5 years to 18 years were drenched in sweat by the end
of their sessions, they still had energy to smile for a photo with our
two visiting coaches.
Monday came too fast, and the morning air was hot and humid as we arrived
at the first of 8 school appointments over the next two days, it was going
to be a long one!
As the boys wheeled their bikes under the covered area, 200 grade 1 to
4 children shuffled in two by two. As the boys introduced themselves and
started their talk, it was surprising how intensely each of the 200 were
listening. Their routine covered safety gear, bike maintenance, road safety,
how much fun BMX racing is, and of course our sign on day. The talk finished
up with a demo by Glen on how to balance, and manual his bike. Come to
think of it, Glen did the demo’s at all the schools….??? Anyhow
as Wade got the crowd pumping and the teachers looked at each other as
200 screaming kids chanted GLEN GLEN GLEN GLEN GLEN!! As he approached
another notch higher on the ‘Bunny Hop Bar’. Some of those
covered areas get very very loud. When the demo finished and Wade presented
the school principle with a Gavin D 2005 Calendar on behalf of the Mackay
BMX Club, swarms of kids swamped Glen each telling him of his or her BMX
bike or to get an autograph on their hat, all at once!
It was pretty much the same story at every school. Glen now has about
500 grade three fans, and out of the 2000 plus students we spoke to, about
3000 of them said they were going to our Sign On Day.
A visit to the local Hot FM radio station was a pleasant treat after the
Monday school visits. The best thing about the studio, apart from the
receptionist, was the AIRCONDITIONING! We could have stayed in those comfy
reception couches for ever. The announcer interviewed Glen & Wade,
and four of our young riders for a series of radio promos leading up to
our Sign On Day.
Tuesday started at about the same Monday 28deg and steamy. We kicked off
with pancakes at the Hot FM stand because it was ‘pancake day’
and the receptionist was there! Once we composed ourselves it was off
to schools again. The day went so quickly and before we knew it, it was
time to pack bike boxes and catch a JetStar plane to Brisbane, we checked
in an hour before just to be sure (you know JetStar’s reputation)
But I must say to their credit, there was no excess baggage charge for
Glen’s bike box packed with dirty clothes at 26kg!! And the luggage
trolleys were FREE!! Must be the only place in the world with free trolleys.
Before you knew it they were gone and here we are sitting at the Mackay
BMX track at our Come And Try Day, inundated with new young BMXers keen
to start their careers in Wade Bootes and Glen Codega’s footsteps.
Thanks for your help boys!
14/02 Changes the Victorian State Titles
If you are a regular to BMXUltra.com you will have seen that
BMXVictoria are discussing some changes in the way the State Championships
are run in regards to Pro classes and whether the titles should be an
open event or not.
While BMXVictoria have acknowledged the need for a change in the running
of the Victorian Championships, they also recognise that the responses
so far on BMXUltra.com are from people that are strongly against opening
the state championships. There are a lot of people who are sitting on
the fence, that either don't care either way or are strongly for opening
up the titles but have not used this opportunity to express their own
view. We have a short time before BMXVictoria must make a decision and
they are taking all sides of the argument into consideration, that's right

11/02 Factory Hyper / No Fear rocking the Mid
West
Carlsbad, California – Hyper / No Fear team manager
TJ Johnson has been all over the mid west this winter conducting clinics
and managing the team to an early lead in the ABA Factory points chase
to match NBL team manager Anthony Derosa’s NBL National Team points
lead. The dual sanction team points lead is something that BMX hasn’t
seen in years. Johnson started the Midwest swing off with a bang with
an impromptu clinic at Rehbein’s Arena indoor BMX facility in Lino
Lakes January 23rd followed by a crowded and well received clinic at Walworth
Indoor BMX in Elkhorn, Wisconsin the very next weekend. The Elkhorn clinic
featured Hyper team riders Alise “The Beast” Post, Ben Kubalak,
new vet-pro Eric Elliott as well as special guest instructor Mark Melton.
The very next Wednesday night, TJ was in Las Cruces, New Mexico spreading
the BMX word at Roadrunner BMX before heading to Guthrie, Oklahoma for
the ABA’s Sooner National.
In Guthrie, TJ, Ben Kubalak, Lahsaan Kobza, and Connor Fields, in his
first race back since breaking his wrist before Del Mar last year, ran
a small team sheet and wound up keeping Hyper at the top of the ABA points
standings. Kubalak stood head and shoulders above the rest taking home
3 out of 4 wins in 14 Expert (double) and 13-14 Open. Kobza battled with
Sean Lechner and edged him out for a 13 Expert win on Saturday but crashed
on Sunday. Connor had a decent 2005 debut taking home a couple podium
finishes. TJ was out front on Saturday before getting taken out along
with about 10 spokes in his front wheel. He battled back on Sunday with
a win in 28-35 Expert. The team scored enough points to keep Hyper at
the top of the 2005 Factory heap.

11/02 Daniel Stocks on FreeAgent
We heard through the grapevine last night that 16 year old Victorian
rider Daniel Stocks was picked up by FreeAgent. Not surprising since his
outstanding clean sweep of A Pro class at the The Cash Dash, The Dome
and an unprecedented all 6 rounds of the Track Attack (which had never
before been done in the A Pro class).
Daniel will be joining FreeAgent as their AA Pro with Shannon Rademaker
the A Pro, and given the way Shannon is improving it won't be long until
both riders are getting amongst it in the AA Pro field.
Keep an eye out for Daniel Stocks in FreeAgent colours.

10/02 Warragul Royal Children's Hospital race
update
As an early warning, we have been told that there may be a market
on at the footy ground that joins the BMX track area and a gold coin donation
may be required for entry to the car park. We hope to get confirmation
soon.
We have also confused a couple of people mentioning the Vet Pro class.
It's not on the entry forms. The only class that is mentioned is the 14
& Over money class. The Vet Pro (20") class was an idea to get
all the riders 30 & Over with a 20" to donate $10 to the RCH
and get to race for their donation, there should be no restrictions on
the class either, race as many classes as you like, since all profits
are to go to the RCH. There will be no money/prizes won by the Vet Pros,
just bragging rights, the entry fees are 100% donations to RCH as there
are no prizes, and therefore, no costs involved with the class.
Don't forget racing is on Sunday February 20, gate drops at 11 am.
09/02 Clayborn Bicycles to return
Clayborn Bicycles have gone quiet over the past few months, and
the website is down, so I thought I'd chase up owner Richard Bunt and
find out what's going on.
I was surprised to hear that they have a new team for 2005, a new website
ready to go live and some new products on the way. That's all we can tell
you for now. Watch this space.

09/02 Warragul Royal Childrens Hospital fund
raiser
While many Victorian's head up to Liverpool seeking competition
for preparation for the Australian championships which are now only a
month and a half away, those left in Victoria will be able to compete
at Victoria's last link to it's BMX roots, the Old School Warragul BMX
track.
Here's a couple of rumours we have heard so far;
While Warragul are having a race meeting, they also are raising money for the Royal Children's Hospital, so be sure to be generous when donating. Entry form with full details on our race calendar.
08/02 SE BMX coming to Australia

stores in Victoria, but they are looking for dealers in other states throughout
the country.

08/02 BMXPros.com Race Report: ABA Sooner National
Guthrie, Oklahoma
Round 3 of the 2005 ABA Pro Series returned Pro BMX racing to Oklahoma,
this time to Guthrie. In a great facility for BMX racing, the Lazy E Arena
held a impressive track for the racers as they showed up for practice
on Friday.
The U within a U design branched off out of turn one with a technical
pro section going to the left, testing the Pros just as they were getting
up to full speed. This section made for some big surprises, especially
on Sunday. With a good track and all the top riders in attendance, it
was a exciting weekend for the BMXPros.com Pros and race fans. Here is
how the riders finished
up over the weekend.
Kyle Bennett made Guthrie his first stop of the 2005
ABA Schedule and by the way he raced this weekend, he made a huge statement
on how he wants his season to go. In 2 of the 3 main events on Saturday,
Kyle lead from start to finish, taking home the overall win in AA Pro
on Saturday. On Sunday, Kyle continued his winning ways, winning all 3
mains and took home another victory in
the AA Pro Class. Looks like a new in streak in AA Pro class has just
started.
Kyle's sponsors include Free Agent, KHS, Answer, Sun Ringle, UGP, Truvativ,
Velo, Vans, S&M bars, ATI, Shimano, Profile, Powerbar, Cyto Sport/Cyto
Max, and BMXpros.com.
Cristian Becerine returned home for a month in Argentina
just last week and the time away from the US didn't slow him down one
bit. On Saturday, a slide out caused him to be in the back of the results
in the AA Pro main with a 8th, but come Sunday, Cristian was back. After
making the AA Main, Cristian ran up front with Kyle for the top spot,
and just missed the win as he finished
2nd place overall. Cristian's sponsors include Crupi, O'Neal, Answer,
UGP, Sun Ringle, Marwi, Shimano, Tool Shed, Powerbar, BMXpros.com, Cyto
Sport/Cyto Max, and Thomson Seat Posts.
Randy Stumpfhauser had one of those weekends he wants
to forget, but still had some impressive results. On Saturday, Randy made
the AA Main and 7th was his overall result. On Sunday, Randy was back
in the main, looking to do a bit better, and 5th was just that. 2 good
results, but Randy has some high standards and will be ready for the next
national. Randy's sponsors include GT
Bicycles, Hyundai, ODI, Kenda Tires, Shimano, Fly Racing, Smith, Sun Ringle,
Bombshell Forks, AC, DC Shoes, Thomson, Powerbar, CTI Knee Braces, Profile,
Tool Shed, Marwi, SDG, FSA Headsets, S & M, Cyto Sport/Cyto Max, and

07/02 Lilydale Super National Race Report
Numbers were down at Lilydale on Sunday, it's a track that normall
has a good following, the Super Nationals felt more like a regional race.
The event wasn't well promoted, and from what I hear there were people
who had problems with high entry fees, 4 qualifying motos and racing at
Lilydale again so soon after the Track Attack round only 2 weeks earlier.
That said, the track is still unchanged, but it was in good condition
despite the heavy rainfalls over Melbourne in the week leading up to the
event. The weather was perfect for racing, although a little muggy, the
sun was out and dried the track completely by the time racing was underway.
There weren't enough entries for pro women which was a disappointment
after they turned out in their droves at the Track Attack series.
Pro Open men (14 & Over) pulled 3 gates of riders. The AA Pros attending
were Tony Harvey, Jonathan "Jon Jon" Hoare, Ben Price, Scott
Lacey, David Page and new AA Daniel Stocks. The A Pros were headed up
by Shaun Craven, Ahron Jeffree, Geoff Tripovich, Shane Jenkins and local
Matt Vickers who always does well in front of a home crowd.
Harvey, Price and Jon Jon dominated the motos while Lacey and Stocks also
took moto wins. While all 6 AA Pros made the main, it was consistancy
that would decide which A Pros would make the cut. By the third round
of motos Craven, Tripovich and Jenkins looked like they would make the
cut. But Jeffree, with a second place in his final moto, knocked Tripovich
and Jenkins out of the main. Local boy Vickers had a bad day and youngster
Michael Chasteauneuf was in the field but didn't make much of an impact
on the more experienced field.
In the main, Price got a snap on the rest of the field, Harvey slotted
into second. By the first corner Page had moved into thrid with Jon Jon
in fourth, Lacey in fifth, there was a little bit of bumping and shoving
but all riders got around. Harvey was trying to make up ground on Price
but was still a length behind by the time they got to the last corner.
Harvey tried to line up Price on the corner, but took it too fast and
washed out, the rest of the field ran straight into him. The mix up allowed
Lacey to slip into second and Stocks into third, Craven and Jeffree took
fourth and fifth.
Pro Open results

2. Scott Lacey (BMXBits.com.au)
3. Daniel Stocks

5. Ahron Jeffree (Intense/TotalBMX)

04/02 ATi has opened an online store at www.atistore.com
It
has been a difficult decision to make but it was done to satisfy the numerous
requests received from riders and teams, all over the world. These requests
have been for certain ATi products, colors, styles, etc. that have not
been made available, for whatever reason, through the normal channels
but are now available through our online store.
To further assist these riders and teams we have enlisted other manufacturers
to participate in sales of their products through our store. Currently
joining our efforts will be Fly, Supercross, ACS, FSA and SUNringle. We
also have the Warwick Stevenson “The Winning Edge” DVDs available
on the site, individually or in the three DVD set. We have other companies
who will be joining us shortly.
The site is populated with all the ATi products at this time and we will be adding older models and discontinued items at greatly reduced prices shortly. We will also have sales and other promotions as we go along. Watch for the announcements through BMXULTRA.COM and by checking our site from time-to-time.
During the month of February, as part of our Grand Opening, if you come to our store and place an order, if you enter BMXULTRA in the promotional code field when you check out, you will receive a 15% discount off your entire order.
Please be patient as we populate the site with other manufacturer’s products and if you run into any difficulties during ordering. Hopefully things will go smoothly and we will correct problems as quickly as they are reported. Check back often for product updates and additions. I would like to thank you all in advance and if you have any questions be sure and contact me.

04/02 MCS' Amanda Geving Turning Pro
MCS' Amanda Geving will be joining the womens professional ranks for the
2005 season. Amanda is coming off of one of the brightest amateur careers
that anyone could hope for. She started racing in 1999 at the age of 10.

as well as South America, Australia and Europe. Taking home 11 out of

It's only a matter of time, and at 16 years of age she has plenty of time to get the job done.
Good luck Amanda we are all behind you. As always we would also like to thank our sponsors: Answer, Odyssey, Profile, Sun Rims, ATI, UGP, Hammer, ACS, Cane Creek and Diatech.

03/02 Lilydale Entry form
The first of two Victorian "Super Nationals" is on
this weekend at the Lilydale BMX track. BMX Victoria have put them on
to help prepare their riders for the Australian Championships. I would
have thought jumping tracks like Bellarine and Park Orchards would have
been a better choice, given they are probably the most technical tracks
in the state closely followed by Bendigo and a few others.
We received the entry form last night, you will pretty much have to express
post them today if you want to get your entry in for racing this Sunday.
For the Pro classes there is a $1000 plus payback pool for (Pro Open)
male and female, they are paying top 16.
Click here to check out the entry
form on our race calendar.

01/02 2005 Staats Jump Frame Spy Photos
Since
1995, Staats has been synonymous with BMX racing and has cultivated a
reputation for its quality, rider-designed, race-proven frames. And during
the last 10 years, Staats has strived to grow with the sport and the riders
needs. So while lending an ear to the riders and compiling feedback from
Staats’ AA Pro Mike Day and Pro dirt/park rider Josh Hult, we started
designing a frame that could handle today’s progressive riding.
The result is the Staats L.J. (Long Jumper) and S.J. (Short Jumper). The
frame is nearing completion for release mid-February and we couldn’t
wait so we snuck in to the welder to get a few spy photo’s.
If you were one of lucky ones to get your hands on the January issue of Transworld BMX (which is sadly thee last issue of TWBMX) you would have noticed the cover shot with Mike Day on the proto-type of the L.J. contorting a turndown.
Keep checking in with your Staats dealer or www.staatsbikes.com for all the details and for the official launch of the new S.J. and L.J. frames.
