Pro Women
There were 9 riders in the combined pro women's class. It was
Donna Tiananga from Lake Macquarie in NSW that would miss out
on the main. The final looked like it would come down to Ziggy
Callan and Grace Ireland. But when the gate dropped it was Callan
with the Old Schooler Caroline Sabotka in close second, Ireland
was in third and Ashleigh Cragg from ACT in four. Unfortunatly
for Sabotka a couple of small mistakes and a little fatigue allowed
both Ireland and Cragg to get by towards the end.
Final Results
1. Ziggy Callan
2. Grace Ireland
3. Ashleigh Cragg
4. Caroline Sabotka
5. Katrina Durso
6. Sherie Wood
7. Joanne Kelly
8. Erin Butler
A Pro Men
With 27 riders in the A Pro Men's field racing was going to be
tough and when it came to the semi final there were a few surprises.
Galea looked a real threat for the final but when he chose not
to jump the big doubles in his semi it was too hard for him to
make up ground. Aaron Wheatland, also a threat, was also riding
well in his semi and looked it be in the main comfortably but
crashed out on the second corner. Benn Ross had a heavy fall in
qualifying that appeared to have taken it's toll on his body,
he could only manage a 5th in his semi. The number 1 qualifyer
for the semis, Matt Dunsworth, also could only manage a 5th in
his semi. While all these guys were having bad luck Jhy Denholm
was cashing in. He was very comfortable jumping the big doubles
at Knox, where he lacks in power he makes up for in strength,
he'll be a rider to look out for in the near future.
In the main it was all Michael Chasteauneuf, Jordan Morgan stuck
with him to the line but not had to settle for second. Peter Trenwith,
Connor Hunter and Tom Siinmaa were fighting for the final podium
spot, but Siinmaa washed out on the second corner. Trenwith finished
in third and Hunter in fourth.
Final Results
1. Michael Chasteauneuf
2. Jordan Morgan
3. Peter Trenwith
4. Connor Hunter
5. Shaun Cuthbert
6. Andrew Toth
7. Jhy Denholm
8. Tom Siinmaa

Double A Marketing press release
The ABA Season came to a close this past weekend in Tulsa, OK.
The ABA prepared what may have been the best Grand National Track
ever built, with just as much excitement in the arena. The 500
moto race was exciting and action packed with some of the best
AA Pro racing in years, with Randy Stumpfhauser being the most
dominant Pro of the weekend. Cristian Becerine was also flying
all weekend and had great results. Here is how each of the Double
A Marketing riders finished up:
Randy Stumpfhauser has been flying for the past
few races, taking home wins. With an outside shot at the ABA #1
Pro title, Randy had his full focus on winning the ABA Grands.
Things started off well for Randy on Friday night, as the ABA
had made the Pro spectacular a Pr points race. Randy won every
lap of the night up to the main event. As the gate dropped, Stumpy
took the lead and was flying but a slight bobble in the rhythm
section caused him to leave a space open, and Bubba Harris took
it, as well as the lead. Randy finished up 2nd for the night,
but gained a lot of needed points. On Saturday and Sunday, Randy
was once again flawless in his qualifying races. As the main event
took to the first of 3 rounds, once again Randy was the most dominant
Pro, as he took the first main event win. In the 2nd main, Randy
once again took the early lead, but was passed by Bubba in the
Pro section and came close, but finished 2nd. When the 3rd main
loaded up, Stumpy got ready and just exploded out of the gate,
with an incredible lead going into the first turn. No one came
close to Randy, as he took the 3rd main win, as well as the overall
for the day. This win put Randy into #2 overall for the season,
making this his best ABA Pro season to date. Randy's sponsors
include GT Bicycles, Kenda, ODI, Tangent, Sun Rims, Bombshell,
Fly Racing, Powerbar, CTI Knee Braces, OGIO, SDG, SRAM, Easton,
S & M Bars, DC Shoes, Cyto Sport, and BMXpros.com.
Cristian Becerine just returned to America from
his big win at the South American Games. Cristian was a bit jet
lagged, but you would have never have known it, as on Friday night
at the Pro Spectacular, he finished up 4th. Come Saturday and
Sunday, Cristian was flying and looking to be one of the favorites.
His incredible speed down the first strait away was turning heads
and giving the other Pros fits. When the AA Pro finals started,
Cristian was out front and one of the few riders to get close
to Randy and Bubba, as he finished up 3rd for the day. Cristian's
Sponsors include: Free Agent, Answer, Kenda, THE Products, Oakley,
Sun Ringle, Shimano, Powerbar, BMXpros.com, OGIO, Cyto Sport,
and Thomson Seat Posts.
Double A Marketing proudly represents Cristian Becerine, Kyle
Bennett, Dale Holmes, Brandon Meadows, and Randy Stumpfhauser.
Look for new riders to be added on for 2007. For more information

It was my 24th consecutive Victorian Championships event.
It was far from the biggest, but for me the 2006 Victorian State
Championships will certainly be remembered as the friendliest.
Riders from all over Australia gathered at Knox to take on Victoria's
finest. The posters that BMX Victoria had put together and the
hype from the various websites pulled a lot of old faces back
to have a look at the titles. There was even a visitor from Singapore,
Azman Omar who was having a ball catching up with all the VintageBMX.com
family.
AA Pro
Tony Harvey had announced earlier in the week that he would go
into retirement after the event, and although this made him the
sentimental favourite, he had some fierce competition in Ben Price
and South Australian Brian Kirkham, not to mention the rest of
the AA Pro field. Although Harvey qualified second overall for
the main it was Brian Kirkham who was the odds on favourite. Scott
Lacey and Jonathan Hoare both narrowly missed out on the main
when Chris Westwood finished up with a first place in his final
round that put in in the final qualifying spot. Josh Callan also
rode well to make a tough main at his first AA appearance. Also
in the final field were Ash McCutcheon, Luke Pretlove and Levi
Collins.
When the gate dropped in the main it was Kirkham who had the early
lead with Price and McCutcheon hot on his tail. Harvey was around
mid field and it would take a miraculous ride for him to win from
there, but by then end of the first straight he had made up a
lot of ground and was in third he commenced his charge passing
the powerful Price on the second straight. Kirkham seemed to have
a handy lead at that point and looked to have the bike in cruise
control. Harvey was focused as he pulled out of the second corner
he showed the crowd an amazing example of where determination,
knowledge, power, skill and a never say die attitude can get you.
He gained an extra length on the third straight and caught Kirkham
napping around the final corner, gave him a clean and very calculated
bump that was enough for Kirkham to lose speed and allow Harvey
to power his way to another win. It was an inspiring ride that
the spectators will be talking about for a very long time. Kirkham
hung on for second with Price in the three sport and McCutcheon
in four. It was Pretlove in five, then Collins Callan and Westwood.
HRV then went on to do a lap of honour to a standing ovation being
congratulated along the way by the likes of former AA pro Danny
Galea, fellow coach Trevor Stamford and his good mate Ben Price.
Once that was over he was on the mic giving a heart felt speech
talking about his retirement and then signing posters for the
kids. To top that off in true Harvey style Tony decided to walk
up and over the van that the SE backdrop was hanging from instead
of around like all the others. Tony was a true asset to the sport,
a real champion, and a great personality he will be missed by
all.
More about the Victorian Championships tomorrow.

About BSX
BSX is short for Bicycle Supercross. We pair up some
of Australia's best pro BMXers on a 2 man track, much like Stumpy's
DC sprint trails, in a one on one elimination style race until
we find a winner. It's a BMX event like none other in the country.
The riders are challenged on a short technical track while having
a whole lot of fun and at the same time putting on a show for
the spectators. The event created an atmosphere that's too hard
to put into words and must be experienced. Last year Luke Madill
took the win, can he come back from spinal injuries and take it
again?
Next year the event will be held at Kinglake West, Victoria (just an hour north of Melbourne) on Monday January 22. It's the day after the UCI Pacific Oceania round at Knox (during the Track Attack series).

Over
the past few months I have been thinking alot about my future
in the sport of BMX. After a lot of consideration I have decided
to hang up the helmet and retire. This weekends state titles will
be my last race.
BMX has been a big part of my life for 25 odd years, and over
that time I have had the pleasure to meet and associate with some
fantastic people. I would just like to thank everyone who has
contributed to my career and helped me to achieve my goals in
the sport.
I would like to give a big thanks to the guys down at Elite Cycle
Imports, Gary and Grant have been there supporting me for a long
time and have become great friends, to Sean Dwight for his help
over the years, and for giving me his endless commitment. Also
the guys down at the VIS, Peter and Dave have been fanstastic
and have given me a great opportunity to work with some of the
best heads in the sporting industry. To my friends from the track,
these are the guys that keep you coming back every week. All the
guys that have helped me with the state coaching program, Trev,
Glenn, Rob and the board, thanks for all your support and for
letting me give back to the sport I love most.
I have to thank Pricey for keeping me going for the past few years,
thanks for making me laugh mate.
Last but not least, my girlfriend Lisette, mum and dad; thanks
for the years of support and dedication.
Thanks everyone for being a big part of my life.
by Shane Jenkins/bmxultra.com
There seems to be riders who are taking their BMX racing
so seriously they are influencing the building/rebuilding of tracks
to create a greater divide between them and their competition.
There are 2 basics that you need to be a competitive BMXer today.
The obvious power to get up to speed quickly and skill to take
jumps smoothly each is as important as the other.
In the US, in most cases, the tracks used for nationals are challenging but because they are used by all riders of all levels, and it's important to keep the meeting running at a good pace, the only place you will see jumps that have to be jumped are in pro sections or decision makers. What this means in the older classes are races that go right to the wire, where a more powerful rider might lack in skill he can make up for on other parts of the track and it's the same with the skilled riders.
That's not the case in Australia, there's a tendancy to make
the tracks very technical with big jumps in the hope that the
skilled riders would come out on top. That's perfect for elite
racing, it's awesome watching those guys and girls go at it and
seeing all the different ways that people would go through the
same jumps, etc. There is just one problem we are forgetting the
other 98% of riders that are in the sport for fun, and maybe one
day they will be our elite riders, but they have to start somewhere.
I am not sure of the exact number of licensed BMXers in Australia,
but if I was to take a guess I would say around 7,500. There were
111 Elite riders at the 2006 Australian Championships. So you
would consider that there are 111 riders out of 7,500 that are
very serious about their racing, training their tails off, striving
for Olympic selection, etc, etc. You know that's 1.5% of the total
number of estimated riders.
BMXAustralia took the lead at the National Championships and had a pro section for the pro riders, and some tracks across the country have followed.
My concern isn't that I won't win because I won't jump a big double, I simply don't care. My concern is the effect it would have on the growth of the sport. There's the argument that BMX is an extreme sport, but if that were true why is it that even downhill BMX, which is far from BMX as we know it today, was dropped from the X-Games? And how many extreme sports do you see in the Olympics? It's an exciting action sport. But we must remember our roots, we all started somewhere, and without grass roots riders the sport will not be able to support itself. Eventually there would be no elite riders at all because there would be no riders coming up through the ranks to progress to that level.
We must build tracks that are safe and still encourage riders to get started and to progress. If you can't build a pro section, there's no reason why you can't build a big double, if you fill most of it in so others can roll, or monster truck through it, it's still the same double. The same take off and landing. But the thing is it won't look as daunting, you will get more riders giving the sport a go and more riders trying to jump that double, take a look at Knox for example, how many people are trying to hit that up these days? There were jumps at the NBL grands this year that were doubles that were filled in, I didn't hear any one complain about them, the racing was awesome and most importantly it was one of the biggest races in the world.
Let's be smart here, BMX should be for everyone, please consider that and the future of the sport.
by Shane Jenkins/bmxultra.com
The Knox Thunder Dome is one of Victoria's biggest race meetings,
given the current situation in Victoria with poor attendances,
Knox could run a club race and it would be bigger than some of
the sanctioned events. With the interclub just gone and the Victorian
State Championships just ahead the club has put a lot of time
into their track. It's super smooth, the step up into the first
corner is very square and will sort out a few riders, but the
rest of the track is at a high standard.
With the state titles being an open event and just around the corner only a few interstate riders ventured into Victoria most looking for a little extra track time.
14 & Over ladies (9 riders)
Former 2 times elite womens world champion Rachael Sheridan made
the journey down to Victoria to take on Ziggy Callan, in what
would prove to be a two "horse" race. Rachael's leg
speed and pumping skills Vs Ziggy's strength and jumping skills.
When Ziggy jumped the big Knox doubles in practice it was just
enough to give her the psychological edge for the main. Although
she didn't do it in the main she did look more driven. The more
time Sheridan spends on her bike the quicker she gets, when she
returns to Knox for the UCI round in January there's going to
be some awesome racing. Jade Parker pulled the third with Erin
Anderson in fourth.
A Men (14 riders)
Another 2 horse race with Michael Chasteauneuf being the favourite
and Josh Callan also a hot contender. In the main Chasty seemed
to get a narrow lead early on Callan who pulled up next to him
on the inside but messed up on the step up into the corner, allowing
Chasty to pull away to a comfortable lead. Callan didn't give
up though, he did make up some ground but had to settle for second.
Shaun Cuthbert seemed to have third wrapped up until Tom Siinmaa
stole it from him right before the finish line. With the second
place finish Callan has now qualified for the AA ranks. Chasty
wont be too far behind him. It will be interesting to see if Tom
Siinmaa can then step up to the plate. His progress over the past
12-18 months has been staggering, he is certainly a rider of the
future.
AA Men (7 riders)
Ben Price has built himself quite a following over the past couple
of years, you would have to say he was the crowd favourite. Tony
Harvey is one of those guys that you can never write off he's
strong, skilled and an extremely quick thinker who can draw from
a wealth of knowledge. Ash McCutcheon has been getting amongst
it in the AA field too, an outsider but a real contender. Also
getting amongst it were bmxultra.com's Levi Collins and Adam Carey
in his first race as a AA pro. Shane Claassen and Dean Miller
filled out the class.
Price proved he had the first straight pull, consistantly coming
down the first straight with a half a length over the rest fo
the field. Harvey seemed to struggle to get a good gate but would
manage to pull up next to Price each time by the big doubles.
In the first two rounds it was all Harvey. In the third Price
was leading down the last straight, he looked to move across to
shut Harvey down but then unclipped and was all over place putting
Harvey off his bike completely. In the fourth round Harvey waited
until the last corner where he brake checked Price who had no
where to go but into Harvey's back wheel and he fell. Harvey then
took round 5 as well. In the final round Harvey and Price were
out the back of the field and found themselves in a wreck in the
second corner allowing Ash McCutcheon to take the win for the
round.
After the dust had settled it was Harvey with the overall win,
McCutcheon was in second, Price third and Levi Collins in fourth.

Team Phirebird press release
An Interview With Brad Pillette-Hughes, Part 1
For several years Team Phirebird has had grand plans to change the sport of BMX, we like to think we have played a small part in its success but in all probability, sports like BMX don’t need any help; they get big all on their own.
Team Phirebird, as you may have recently read with the impending Phase #1 release, is undergoing major refashioning (and yes, this interview is a clue to what around the corner!). But big dreams require big action, and big action requires the right people to generate the right results. We have spent years attracting the right people to our team who provide direction and results consistent with our vision and for the first time we share them with you all.
Someone who fits this bill is Brad Pillette-Hughes, he is known throughout certain sporting circles in the southern hemisphere and into some parts of the northern, as the man to see if you want to excel in your chosen sport. Today, Brad is almost single-handedly dragging us, kicking and screaming, from the mind-numbing grind of aimless marathon gate start sessions and the delirium of 3 sets of 6 to a world of all new possibility.
But you may not know him yet; you need to, so here’s Part 1 of the interview.
Team Phirebird: Welcome, Brad. Thanks for taking
the time to chat to us about BMX as you see it.
Brad Pillette-Hughes: I'm glad to have the chance
to do this with you, thanks for the opportunity.
TPB: Brad, tell us how got into physical preparation
and training athletes?
BPH: I got interested in physical prep at a fairly
early age; I was a lanky kid with sports loving parents and about
13 when I got my first home gym, 50kgs of green cast iron and
a blue bench with grey vinyl. I actually only just got rid of
the set about five months ago by the way it served me well!
The progression to strength training was a matter of fighting instinct; it all came down to if I wanted to survive the rugby field I had to hit the strength training world. So I did, loved it, breathed it in fact, and spent all my spare paper boy cash buying protein supps and um, ur, mmm, this is hard to admit, Muscle & Fitness mag.
From there it was all solo until I was 16 and was introduced to the power lifting game, one guy in particular showed me that M&F programs were going to get me nowhere without the ‘recovery program’ of a bodybuilder if you get my drift. That directed me to more results based training, I spent a good year getting big and strong [and got very big and strong] and then realised some of the limitations that power lifting had on athletic prep. Fortunately we had a reasonable physical prep coach at my rugby club who introduced me to better training methods and the potential to earn a living from training others; my path was set in stone.
Additionally throw in thousands hours of sweat equity, a brief professional rugby career, OTS [Over Training Syndrome] and a multitude of injuries, a sports science degree, a transient rugby resurrection, a business launch, mentoring, thousands of hours of practical experiences where failure was common and lessons were plentiful, and not to mention $70k plus of investment in professional and personal development and here I arrive!
TPB: Damn, that’s a lot of money to spend
on education!
BPH: It may sound it to some and I’m actually
being conservative really, it is very easy and well worth it if
you have a thirst for learning and helping others.
TPB: The readers will no doubt be wondering
why we are talking to you, tell us what your current involvement
is with BMX and how it come about?
BPH: January 2005 was where it started ‘this
time’. I say this time because I started racing when I was
5 and finished when I was 13 when the sport died in the early
‘90’s and I gave focus to rugby. At the time of retirement
I was riding for Free Agent Australia at the time so it has been
a long time between race meetings for me that's for sure.
TPB: Got any memorabilia from the day that we
can have?
BPH: Yeah, I a bit of a collector actually, but
none you can have! Among the prized is my last race bike, my old
number plate collection, an album full of signed cards and ‘80s
stickers, and my favourite is my mint ‘Hollywood’
Mike Mirada signed Hutch poster that I was given when he visited
the ‘88 North Island BMX Champs [New Zealand] after I stood
in the middle of a set of doubles and jumped me. Still got all
my trophies stashed somewhere too.
TPB: Hollywood aye? The ‘80’s were
great racing times for sure! Still riding?
BPH: The sport has changed a lot from when I
last raced, there is more emphasis on the skill and less on the
physical so I have been left far behind. I do have a donor ‘03
GT Ultrabox that gets dusted off more and more regularly as my
confidence grows but I do spend more time in the forest on my
mountain bike than the track with my BMX, the ratio is shifting
though.
TPB: Lets straighten it up a bit we’re
getting offline here, your were in the process of telling us how
you ended up back in BMX territory and what you are doing...
BPH: It all happened simply by opening my mouth
really. I was driving along the Pacific Highway, Gold Coast one
Sunday afternoon after a Snapper session [Snapper Rocks surf break]
and saw there was a big meeting on at Nerang. I decided to be
a sticky beak in light of the news about the sport gaining Olympic
selection. I pulled up on the 3rd corner and got talking to a
lady who suggested I meet a lady named Frankie [Winter, BMXQ State
Coaching Director], we spoke briefly and Frankie invited me to
the weeklong post Nerang training camp where I met Mr Phirebird,
Glenn Codega, who was coaching at the camp. We struck up conversation
and I have been a behind the scenes figure ever since.
Outside of TPB I have conducted private coaching for motivated BMX athletes, presented at BMXQ State ID camps, BMXA Junior High Performance camps, and have recently taken on the roll strength and conditioning coach to the newly formed QAS [Queensland Academy of Sport] BMX program.
Really it has just come down to me having a passion for a sport I was involved with for many years, the sport being in a position of opportunity and growth and a belief that with my skills I can add some value to the sports progression and long term future.
TPB: Interesting to hear you took notice of
BMX in the Olympics, I have heard heaps of people talk about it
and how it will affect the sport, what’s your take on it
all?
BPH: The obvious instant impact for me was the
introduction of an elite HP [high performance] squad, which is
a much needed stepping stone to Olympic gold. Where you have Olympic
medals on the line you have relative financial investment to fund
HP programs of which BMX can consider themselves very fortunate
and should be grateful for the opportunity the government has
granted them. The flip side of receiving money is the responsibility
that you must produce results [medals] in order to continue to
receive, as much as I continually hear attacks of the HP program
the success of the athletes is all it should be judged by, Beijing
is D-day and all and sundry will be accountable then!
Having been involved in a number of sports at the elite level over the years you start to understand the concept of professionalism on many levels, from the business operations to the events to the athletes, and professionalism in terms of results not outward appearance. My observation is that the sport needs some radical changes very quickly in order to bring the sport up to speed with the seriousness of the Olympics.
As a kid I remember a Sir Richard Hadlee [New Zealand cricketer] saying on a coaching video something that has really stuck with me over the years “if you can’t be a cricketer, look like a cricketer”. This concept transcends all aspects of life and in the case of BMX I think the cart has been put before the horse as it is now an Olympic sport but it’s questionable whether it views itself as one yet, one could argue whether some of the athletes actually views themselves as athletes on many occasion either. This isn’t good or bad, it just means the sport has some ground to make up and must be willing to accept advice, ideas, concepts etc. from others that will allow the sport to prosper as I know it can and more importantly deserves to. From this angle I see the impending agreement between CA [Cycling Australia] and BMXA as a potential positive. It is a fallacy to believe athletes can be consistently successful in spite of poor administration leadership; you only have to look in to our prominent winter sports codes here in Australia to see this principle in action.
I see some parallels between BMX and netball interestingly, many of the power voices are people who have a passion for the sport via parental involvement who have done a fantastic job maintaining BMX’s survival but do not realise that sport being what is now, they must now step aside in order to let the new generation of leaders take the sport further. The paradigms that bought the sport to where it is are not the same ones that will take it to where it can be; human ego is a fascinating beast.
TPB: You mentioned the HP program and Olympic
medals, what is it going to take to have an Australian on the
podium in Beijing 2008?
BPH: The answer to this is a whole conversation
in itself so I’ll answer it with a quote from one of the
greatest coaches of all time, Vince Lombardi, “Winning is
not a sometime thing, it's an all time thing. You don't win once
in a while, you don't do things right once in a while, you do
them right all the time. Winning is habit. Unfortunately, so is
losing.”
You have to make your habits before your habits make you and from what I have witnessed of the current elite crop in Olympic contention how they think will have a much more profound influence on their results than what they do.
Jamie Gray has been Australia's the most successful rider at the last two Worlds and as great as his results have been he has come home without the results HE thinks he was capable of which is much more important than the actual result. He knows he is faster than his W#8 suggests so my question to such a rider, of whom many are in the same category, is what are you doing about bridging the gap between your results and your potential? Is what you are doing outside of BMX in regards to lifestyle choices and behaviours etc., and doing inside of BMX with regards to training choices and behaviours consistent with becoming Olympic champion and more significantly are they consistent with you being your best and fulfilling your potential?
To be an athlete we must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. The difference is discipline weighs ounces while regret weighs tons. I am damned if I would want to be the athlete sitting at the games, looking up at the winners on the Olympic dais thinking to myself if only, “if only I had done whatever it takes, like the winner did, that could have been me, if only!” If only are the two saddest words in the world to hear from any athletes mouth!
Some people may read this and think that I'm focusing on the negative, I am, and I’m also following the training principle of training the weakness for the greatest change. My experiences tell me attitude is the biggest the achilles heal of many of Australia’s Olympic BMX hopefuls, unless things change things won’t change and I predict you will see no Australians with Olympic medals in Beijing if things remain. Please don’t be confused, this is not pessimism it is just a reality!
TPB: Well what would you do if you were in Sean
Dwight’s shoes and the reality was that the #2 ranked country
in the world would have no medallist at Beijing?
BPH: That’s is an arbitrary question because
I’m not Sean Dwight and because I am not and I am not there
any answer would come from a place of not knowing and would be
purely speculative. Without specifics I could only repeat what
I have already said, for things to change things must change.
The reality is I am not influencing the program and I am not close enough to the program to understand the limitations and the opportunities that exists influencing the current environment and results.
In reference to the HP program I will say this though, tall poppy syndrome is the Australian institution, any time someone achieves results or has the guts to expose themselves by choosing to be in a scrutinised position of influence, such as the role Sean has taken on as the HP coach, we are very quick to shoot them down and we champ at the bit to see them fail. It is a mindset I don’t consider to be of any great value in sport.
I’ve spoken to Sean on a number of occasions and it’s clear between us that I would do things differently than he does. This doesn’t make the way I do things or the way Sean does things right or wrong, but just different, many spokes lead to the hub as they say.
A message to all the BMX poppy pickers should be don’t doubt the endeavour of Sean, he will be doing the best he can given his level of skill to assist Aussie riders on the podium in ‘08, when the dust settles let the results do the talking because this is the way coaching should be judged. Put it this way, I dare you to find a coach that has been sacked while his athlete/team is winning; it’s a rare thing to see.
Stay tuned for Part II of our catch up with Brad, as we delve deeper into the mysterious mind that is bridging the gap between human performance and human limits and creating new paradigms in BMX racing here in Australia, and soon to be global (that’s another hint right there folks!).

Well
what a fantastic day it turned out to be, but firstly, we (BMXSQ)
threw this idea in the air only a few weeks ago, not fully knowing
how, where, when, ...but we did know why.
We started off by setting a date after dumping the huge job of preparing a suitable venue on Laurie Brown (Pres CP). Laurie and the hard working CP crew kindly accepted to host the event, even though the crew were doing some major track upgrades right up until the day before Renee's Day..., so Thanks Centenary Plains club for all the hard yards. Also, thanks to all those great officials who gave their time to make this event happen.
When we started, we thought we might also have a little raffle - prompted on by our NSWSR counterparts who recently conducted a huge fundraising effort for Renee..., and not to mention a couple of little side bet$ happening...
(boy.. were we blown off our feet..!).
We did what you normally do, ring around start begging people
for a small gift towards a great cause. Some how one thing led
to another, word got out, and next thing you know we had a virtual
Bike Shop full of bikes..., plus heaps more stuff..., that just
kept flowing in, right up until close of raffle. The generosity
of many many people from all over the country, certainly left
a lump in the throats of our organizers on many many occasion.
People willingly gave, with a smile..., and said.., go and make
it a great day.. so the pressure was on to do justice to these
many great prizes, people, and of coarse for Renee.
It was a massive thing (raffle) to try and throw together in the space of a week or so, and many late nights and long hours were sunk in... so a special Thanks to Errol (SQ-Pres) & Kayelene (SQ-Sec.) Domin for all the hard work invested.... and it paid off... Big Time.
A Big Thanks also to the many people and clubs that purchased raffle tickets for the monster-raffle. Even if you didn't end up winning a thing (like me), your dollars of coarse go to a great cause. We tried to make the raffle prize list as big and as much as we could, to encourage as many people as possible to get into the action and fun. Congrats to all who picked up a prize (or 2) big or small. See the list above of who won what. We are still waiting for some of the goods to come in, so please be patient. Most of the prizes have already been collect, or we are arranging for your prize to get to you or be picked up. Please email Kayelene if you are not sure; kmewd@optusnet.com.au
On the day, the clouds looked like we were going to get Hammered big time..., but by 3pm..., perfect sunshine, no clouds (just for a change). I was also very concerned at about 3pm, watching the nomination line up... uuumm not so good.. as I had a pretty Serious Bet going with Neil Cameron from NSWSR. But with an hour to go, the people started flooding in, and the noms line was about 50 meters long... so thanks to all the riders (BMX & MTB) who came out to support the day for Renee - 280 entries. There was also a heap of riders who came along just to have fun, get some raffle tickets, and to say hello to Renee. Actually..., we were pretty sure Renee was not able to come along..., and when we found out she was coming... WOW.. that was great... it just made everything a whole lot better.. and bigger.., and especially for Renee. Renee must have been a good girl that week... and gained a special late night pass.. we don't care how or who she had to pay off... it was a blast to have her and family all there.
She didn't stop signing stuff all day, and all night... bikes, kids, backs, shirts,.. you name it and she signed it. She will probably have writers cramp for a week.
Time came around to do the presentation to Renee, as the busy scoring crew were flat out counting all the money from noms and raffle, before Renee had to get going. But first, a little surprise from a little guy, with a huge heart, and an even bigger money box. Max Dempsey ... if you hadn't already heard, gave to the Fund-raiser for Renee, his entire life savings he had accrued from race earnings, pocket money, birthday money, Xmas money... you name it..., Max's life savings were in that big sealed tin. I was so impressed, I said to Max - on the side...away from everyone... "..are you sure Max... you don't have to mate..., and I'm sure Renee doesn't expect you to... etc..." Max then looked up at me with that big Cheesy Max smile..., and said.. "...Yeh, I wanna do it... it's OK Kent.. " then Max reached into his back pocket and pulled out a kitchen utensil, and said... "...I even bought mum's good can opener..." ...So I shook Max's hand (man to man style...).., patted him on the back..., then quickly shot off behind the scoring shed for a second, so nobody saw me with a tear(s) in my eye... talk about Blown away... maaannn..!!, was that huge ...or what...???!!
Max was called down in front of the huge crowd gathered for the presentation. Errol Domin (Pres Sth Qld) told the story of Max's kind gesture to the massive crowd and Renee. Max then proceeded to carve his way around that Huge sealed money tin... with mums best can opener... hack hack.. chop chop... around he went... about three minutes later... Max had the lid off... The tin had (...wait for it...) OVER $1200 in it, Unreal... Well done Max, you get a BMX Medal of Honour, and a "TouchDown" from all of us.
Errol then had the big cheque out (which is an exact copy of the actual cheque to be sent to the fund ... hope thats legal to do, ooops...!), The exact final count was still being totalled, but we did know it was in excess of $10000.oo, so that's what's on the presentation cheque. Last count, I think the girls were up to $10850.oo give or take a few cents. Every Last Cent raised will be banked into the RJ fund already set up by CA.
RJ accepted the cheque... with a massive smile on her dial.., said a few short words of thanks to the multitudes... "as she is a very quiet petal..." (LOL), mum Sal added a few extra thankyou's, and Alistar did same... and all were overwhelmed for support for RJ, from all over the country... and beyond...
Time for RJ to head back to rehab HQ... we kinda said "brave faces.." .. but one of our other famous young gals Madi Janssen had a hard time with this... as you would, after having a very closes affiliation with RJ... Madi - you bugger... you started the flood... and from that point on... it was a Tear fest, as we all said good buy to RJ.. as she headed back to hospital.
So.. here we are now..., and all will have to suffer me jamming down your throats, for the next month or so, ALL of the great people who made this thing happen... yes... I mean those who put up the fantastic goods ... with a smile.. and said .. go get'm... PLEASE check out the contacts & Web Links to these supporters.., even if they are not your colour, style, brand, whatever...!!. If you get 5 minutes, click the links, check'm out, who knows, you may find a product that you Must Have... contact them... or the outlet dealer... tell them why you are spending your money with them, and please thank them for supporting RJ through this event.
Bound to be killed for leaving someone out..., but also thanks Julie, Jenny, Belinda for doing a massive job behind the scenes, and with the photo's. Please let me know if I have forgotten anyone.. and I will add them in.. no probs...

The current National Champion, Kamakazi, 25, from Jimboomba in South East Queensland and a member of Nerang BMX Club is the third finalist. Kamikazi is the top ranked rider in the UCI Continental standings and is ranked number four in the world. He was a semi finalist at the World Championships in Brazil.

PRODUCT INFORMATION
SHIMANO DXR: Dedicated to BMX racing
Shimano is introducing completely new and innovative components
specifically for BMX racing, which will be an Olympic sport as
from the Olympics of 2008 in Bejing, China. Shimano DXR cranksets,
hubs, brake levers and brakes have been developed in co-operation
with experienced BMX racers to offer superior performance for
this demanding sport.
Probably the most important component of a BMX racing bike is the crankset. Especially at the start, riders put excessive force on the crank. Therefore the crankset should be very rigid and reliable to transfer the power of the riders directly into speed. Keeping this in mind, Shimano developed the FC-MX70 crankset which is based on the Saint cranks that are being used a lot at this moment by the pro riders. This lightweight BMX crankset has been developed with Shimano’s HOLLOWTECH II technology and integrates the bottom bracket to create a super stiff construction for optimal power transfer. This crankset has a 4-arm spider and a reinforced pedal/crank interface by using a steel t-nut threaded bushing. It has a single front chainring (34/38/41/42/43/44/46T) that’s compatible with Shimano’s 9-speed HG chains. This crankset will be available in following crank lengths: 165, 170, 175 and 180mm.
The hubs HB-MX70 and FH-MX70 have been developed with super smooth angular contact bearings. The freehub features a super quick engagement for fast power transfer which is of vital importance in this sport where winning or loosing is being decided in a matter of seconds. The hubs will be available in 32 and 36 spoke hole versions. The freehub carries single sprockets with 14, 15, 16 or 18 teeth.
Finally a DXR rear V-Brake and a 2-finger left and right hand side brake lever will be available (for rear brake only). The brake features cartridge brake shoe holders and offers powerful and reliable stopping power in all conditions.
These specific Shimano BMX racing components provides for a worry-free and reliable set-up, for racing to the max.

I was about to rewrite Brett Scruse's email, but I didn't want
to water down his request, which is already straight to the point.
So if you are, or know, a current or former Aussie team rider
and you would like to help Brett raise money for Renee Junga read
on.
Brett Scruse here. I just learn't of the Hall of Fame, it couldn’t
come at a better time. I am trying to locate every member of the
AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL TEAM who has represented Australia at the
world championships since 1995. From memory that was the first
team. I need to get them all to sign one of my personal national
team tops. I would like to raffle it off at the 2007 nationals
and hand all proceeds over to the Junga family. It's going to
be a task, but I have people working on it now. Your website could
make this job a little easier for me could you put the word out?
big thanks Brett Scruse (onfiretraining@optusnet.com.au)

The Knox Thunderdome was over the weekend, racing was tough and
the track was in great shape.
With only 7 riders in AA Pro, each of the 6 rounds were going to be like finals. Good finishes in each round would be vital, but as the AA's were nearing the midway round there were a few crashes to mix things up. Team rider Levi Collins took 4th overall with co-sponsored rider Adam Carey taking 5th.
There were 11 riders in Vet pro 20", which is shaping up to be a very competitive class, with the likes of Danny Galea and Simon Anderson in the field. Shane Jenkins finished 5th in the main.
The bmxultra.com Australin team riders will all be at the Victorian Championships later this month with Levi Collins in the AA Pro men and Shane Jenkins in the A Pro class. Co sponsored riders Adam Carey will be in AA Pro as well and Brett Malic and Scooby Guyers will be racing in their age classes.

Mud Honey MX press release
Females are an increasing number of riders, competitors,
and supporters of extreme sports, such as BMX and motocross. Mud
Honey MX was developed by identifying the special needs for these
riders.
The range compliments both the functional and lifestyle aspects of these sports. They are high performance garments, designed to become an integral part of a girl's riding gear.
The garments are worn under the necessary heavy duty protective pants and shirts. As this outerwear is often hot and cumbersome, most riders remove it once dismounting. This new product provides functional under garments, that don't look like undies. No need to worry about the guys seeing you gear up now! This stuff looks as good as it performs, wear after wear.
Manufactured in Australia, and designed by women who ride, Mud Honey MX apparel is made from only quality fabrics. They feature mesh panels, for air-flow comfort, and are made of Lycra(R) plus Supplex(R), which offer all the fit and support needed.
Garments are available from Team Moto Springwood in SE Qld, online through www.ballards.cc, www.mcas.com.au, or visit the website www.mudhoneymx.com for more information.

FLY RACING JOEY BRADFORD "JB"
SIGNATURE SERIES HANDLEBARS
We here at FLY are stoked to announce a signature bar for GT's
14-time World Champ, Joey Bradford. While most cro-mo bars out
these days have lots of back sweep, the JB bars are flat with
very little back sweep and upsweep. Joey tells us this offers
him more pull out of the gate and when pulls up for a jump. He
also explained that most aluminum Jr and Expert bars these days
are also flat with little back sweep. As he grew into needing
cro-mo bars, Joey found it hard to find a cro-mo bar that offered
the same feel of the aluminum bars he was used too. From this
need for a new bar, and some design work from Joey, came the new
FLY "JB" bar. So if you're looking for something a little
different then what's out there or you're a younger rider looking
for a cro-mo that feels like your alloy bars, then the JB bar
is the ticket! Black only, 5.5", 7.5", and 8" sizes
available now through your local FLY dealer or favorite mail-order.

Shane Jenkins was the only active member of the bmxultra.com team
on the weekend, making the annual trip down to the Warrnambool
Classic.
With only 8 riders in A Pro, each race would be like a main. With consistant results, and staying relatively unscathed in the final round where most of the field were caught up in a huge crash, Shane finished 3rd overall. When we asked Shane what he thought of the racing this is what he had to say: "I was happy to get a podium finish in A Pro. The racing was so close anything could have happened on the day. But I usually do well at Warrnambool, it suits me, and I have to say they have done an awesome job rebuilding their second straight, it's one of the most fun straights that I have raced on."
The bmxultra.com team is proudly supported by One Bicycles, Supercross BMX, Answer BMX, Dirt Designs, ATi grips, and Tektro brakes.

I have put an announcement on the forum and forgot to put
it here in the news section, sorry folks. Tomorrow is Melbourne
Cup Day which is a public holiday in most of Victoria, so we are
going to make the most of it and do some work on the track and
some riding.
We have a tip truck bringing more dirt into the backyard in prepartion for BSX2007. If you are in the area or looking to pass some time you might want to help us out with some digging or even just riding the track to help us pack it in. Send me an email so I know to expect you and I can provide details on how to get here. For a general idea Kinglake is about an hour north of Melbourne. There shouldn't be a great deal of heavy labour since Chris Van Winden has organised a dingo for the day. It's very important that at this stage we get the jumps and corners dialled in and we can only do that with the help of others.
If you are planning on racing BSX2007 this just might be a good way to get in a little extra track time. Email webmaster@bmxultra.com if you have any questions.

It was refreshing to see that Warrnambool have made a significant
change to their track with the second straight being converted
into a medium set of 5 jumps that goes something like this; double,
double, step up, table top to step up double. It's a whole lot
of fun with not much pedalling. It flows so well it feels more
like an oversized rhythm section. It will be interesting to see
what Warrnambool have planned for the rest of their track.
The weather was cool, over cast and quite windy at times which
meant riders would spend most of their time with their wheels
on the ground.
One thing that keeps me going back to Warrnambool, aside from
the track, is the atmosphere. Whether there is 300 riders or 80
riders, there is always a friendly atmosphere and the crowd really
get behind the riders.
It was unusual to see a race at Warrnambool without Ben Price
or Tony Harvey. Actually there were only 4 riders in the field.
Only 8 in the A pro as well, where 4 of the riders were over 30
and keeping the rest of the A pros honest.
AA racing was awesome, watching locals Luke Prelove and Ash McCutcheon go at each other started off quite innocent in the first 2 motos. But in the third McCutcheon was in the lead with about 2 lengths on Pretlove but left the second corner wide open. Pretlove saw the opening and sent him off the top of the berm, just about taking out two spectators on the other side. In the 4th and final round Ash got some of his own back leaving Pretlove in the dirt. Simon Anderson was very close to them.
With the A Pro field bunched up with some super close racing it made for it's own share of carnage ,especially in the last round. I think Danny Galea was the only one left both upright and on the track. Zac Lennon tried to push his way though Nick Brooks as they were going through the first corner. Shane Jenkins right on their tails had a front row seat and found a gap between bouncing bikes and bodies, he didn't go down but ended up 4 wheel driving through the grass on the infield. The rest of the field found themselves in a huge pile in the corner.
The 4 pro women also put on a great show. Sorry, we didn't catch all the names or the results. Michelle Brookes made her pro debut in fine style, although finishing 4th it looks like she has learned some tricks from her A Pro husband Nick and could be a real contender in the future.
Warrnambool put on an awesome day of racing, we'll be back next year.

their entire Elite class career. This will give riders a possibility
to market themselves and to give media and spectators an easy
way to identify riders. A chosen number will be exclusive for
the rider, and cannot be used by any other elite class rider (including
Junior and Cruiser classes). Please view the assigned numbers
on the link; www.uci.ch/modello2.asp?1stlevelid=C&level1=5&level2=0&idnews=4357
The permanent numbers have been assigned for this season 2006-2007, and no additional numbers will be assigned. Riders that haven’t already been assigned a permanent number will have another chance for next season (2007-2008) to apply for available numbers.
For that National Federations will receive an application form in June 2007, and individual riders shall contact their National Federation in order to apply for a permanent number.

UCI BMX SUPERCROSS WORLD CUP
The 2006 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup has come to an
end after two exciting events in USA and France. The 1st round
of UCI BMX Supercross World Cup made a popular return to San Jose
(USA) in September and was once again a part of the Dew Action
Sports Tour’s Toyota Challenge stop. With the event being
held in night time, the spectacular BMX Supercross track was presented
in a fantastic setting, bringing the crowd to their feet with
some astounding race action. The event was broadcasted on NBC
Sports the next day, where 40 million TV viewers could see Michal
Prokop (CZE) win in front of a pack of strong US riders. Michal
Prokop, also being the MTB World Champion, amazed many with his
ability to be competitive in two different disciplines!
The final round of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup was held in Fréjus, France in conjunction with the biggest MTB event in Europe – the Roc d’Azur. In front of 80’000 Roc d’Azur visitors. High winds became a safety issuen during race day and the track needed to be altered with less jumps for the finals. Nevertheless, the racing action was intense, with Donny Robinson (USA) edging out Michal Prokop (CZE) for the win. Robinson also won the overall UCI BMX Supercross World Cup title.
The UCI BMX Supercross will be extended to four stops in 2007, adding a few new events and returning to both San Jose and Fréjus.

The sudden and tragic passing of Michael Figliomeni on Saturday
28th October 2006 was felt by many in the sporting world, not
just those in the speedway community. Before Michael was involved
in speedcars, he and the whole Figliomeni family was heavily involved
in BMX from the early 80’s. Back then Michael and his younger
brothers Stephen, Frankie and Andrew dominated their age classes.
But it was Michael who not only was successful but was one of
the most respected riders in WA. He was extremely powerful out
of the gate and with tracks in the 80’s that were mostly
drag strips that suited the power rider, Michael was rarely beaten.
Yet you wouldn’t know that he was that calibre of rider
off the track. He had a quiet aura about him and got things done
on the track.
My first memories were reading BMX Pancake (early 80’s mag)
as a 10 year old in Port Hedland and just starting racing. Michael
was featured occasionally and this built up a kind of celebrity
status in my own mind when I first came down to race in Perth
at BMX Action Park in Malaga in 1982. The track was owned and
run by the now UCI BMX President Abe Schneider and he introduced
our family to the Figliomeni’s and was kind of awe struck
by who he was and how fast he raced. As the years went by we moved
the Perth and raced more and got to know the Figliomeni family
quite well. The whole family were extremely friendly and nothing
was too much trouble. I was fortunate enough to race with Michael
as a 14 year old in my first race in “Opens”. He would
have 2 bike lengths on me by the first jump such was his pull
out of the gate, yet would take the time to give me a couple of
tips on gates during practice.
Those who were around then and are still racing today (eg Karl
Mustchin, Paul Throns, Jade McPherson) will all have their memories
of Michael and in reading the obituaries in the paper, he was
the consummate professional in everything he did, racing or in
business. Talented, quiet in striving for success and perfection
yet commanded respect through his drive and unyielding desire
to win that produced championships in all areas of competition,
be it BMX, motocross or speedway. The unexpected passing of an
athlete who did not drink or smoke will, no doubt, cause those
of us around his age range to stop and reflect for a moment how
short life is and live it to its absolute maximum.
Michael will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
