22/12 Season's greetings

by Shane Jenkins/bmxultra.com
Well it's that time of year again, time where I start to panic that I am going away to take a break and there's still so much to do to make sure that BSX will run smoothly. While talking about the BSX it's only a month away now, I must thank Matt Dickinson and Maddy and Jye Denholm and the crew for all their help recently and keeping me motivated. But most importantly Christmas and New Year are upon us. Happy holidays to all and stay safe. I will try to make time for updates over the break, but no promises.

22/12 bmxultra.com Hall of Fame - 2007 Nominees part 2

by bmxultra.com
Here are the remainder of our 2007 nominations for the bmxultra.com Hall of Fame, we have had to trim more names than we would have likes, but we had to start somewhere and there's always next year for additional nominations.

Riders

Wayne McIntosh (New South Wales)
#3 Australia 1984

Wayne McIntosh was the face of GT in the early 80's, the factory team pro rider. While he never actually won a national #1 in the open or pro classes he was always a contender taking out many big wins at some of the biggest races in the country. In 1984 Wayne was the fastest Australian rider to cross the line at the national championships, however the Australian BMX Association, as it was known then had paid for Kuwahara's world champions Clint Miller and Gary Ellis to attend. They took the #1 and #2. At that point Wayne was off GT and riding for himself, having started a business called MACCA, which didn't seem to go too far. He made an appearance at the 1985 Championships at Launceston in Tasmania wearing SE colours, and the number 9 on his plate that he became known for using.

Leigh Egan (Victoria)
#1 Australia 1985-1987, #1 World 1984
Leigh Egan was a very promising amateur racing for the Crossrider team in his early years, and he quickly established himself as a pro. He won the #1 in the 17 & Over class at the World Championships in Japan in 1984 and was quickly signed by GT, for whom he won the 1985 Australian championships. As the golden boy of Australian BMX he won races such as Australia's biggest pro event ever held that the Logan City BMX track in Queensland it had $10,000 up for grabs. The prize pool was enough to attract riders from all over the country as well as a couple of US riders. A racing accident which saw Leigh in hospital for microsurgery to have the tips of his fingers reattached after catching his hand in the chain of a fellow rider at the PRM Cash Dash very nearly ended his racing career. Like a true champion Leigh recovered and returned to racing at the Australian Championships at Woolongong NSW in 1988. Not able to return to the level he was accustomed to he retired shortly afterwards

Darren Miller (Western Australia)
#1 Australia 1983
Darren Miller's story is one of some luck, but BMX has always been about being in the right place at the right time. At the 1983 National Championships at Ashmore Qld Darren was awarded the #1 plate after Jamie Hales was disqualified and their positions reversed. Darren was injured for the 1984 National Championships at Byford in his home state of Western Australia and unable to defend the #1. Shortly after that Darren traveled to europe where he had some success racing BMX but quickly faded out of the scene altogether. He was part of the track committee for the 1999 Australia Championships held indoor at Perth WA and raced the event to win the cruiser class for his age division.

Industry

Steve Cassap (Victoria)
Cassap
Steve Cassap was another Victorian rider to cross over to BMX from motocross racing, and another who started at a Pat Dillon organised event. Steve had some good results against tough competition but then his number plate manufacturing business took over and he was left without the time to train. Also an accomplished freestyler in the early days he was Australia's answer to Bob Haro, right down to the cartoons. Steve toured with Bob Haro on his Australian tour in 1984 which saw them both performing at the Australian BMX racing championships at Byford, WA. The June/July 1984 BMX News magazine documents Steve Cassap's marriage to his long time girlfriend Karen as the wedding of the year that Bob Hard actually flew out to, and stood at Steve's side as his best man. The brand was sold in the late 80's, the Cassap name still lives on in BMX racing today, with riders like former Australian Elite Champions Peter Trenwith and Tanya Bailey still wearing the race gear.

Chuck May (New South Wales)
Invada
Invada was another racewear brand that was started in the early days of BMX. Chuck May started the business when his son Darren and his friends were after spare parts and equipment. Recognising a hole market Chuck quickly stated up a small pro shop and, soon after, moved into making his own line of race clothing. Invada was a household name for over a decade with it's most popular products being the pad sets, number plates and race wear. Chuck and his Invada products were seen at every major event on the east coast of Australia.

Brian Pierce/Judith and Richard Turesson (Queensland)
Peddlepower
Peddlepower is Australia's equivalent to American brands like Max or M&M. Most on the early Australian race teams had pants made by Peddlepower and jersey's as well for some of them. Early in the piece it seemed like everyone was wearing Peddlepower from the grass roots riders to the full factory team riders. The company was started by Brian Pierce who went on to distribute GT Bicycles as well. When GT seemed to have dominated the market in the late 80's Peddlepower was sold to Judith and Richard Turesson, parents of X-games downhill specialist Travis. Travis won and was disqualified at the 1996 Australian Championships wearing Peddlepower gear, the same gear he used as a rookie making a name for himself on the US race circuit. Last we heard Peddlepower was in "semi retirement".

21/12 Interview: Deanna Jamieson

by bmxultra.com
While racing in the US this year I had the fortune to meet Deanna Jamieson who, returning to racing after 18 years off, I found a great inspiration. Most of this interview was written before the ABA Grands. Deanna did go on to win her class and cross of a life long dream from her list of achievements.

20/12 Help a brother @ Track Attack

by bmxultra.com
We all know what a fantastic community the extended BMX family is when it comes to hospitality. If there are any kind folks out there with some room in their car (and on the bike rack) and a spare bed (or somewhere to crash) from Sunday to Saturday of Track Attack Derrick Mellish from Queensland is making the trip down with his father for the first weekend, but after that his father is returning home and he'd like to stay on and finish out the week of racing. If you can help him out email Derrick at derrickmellish_43@msn.com.

19/12 bmxultra.com Hall of Fame - 2007 Nominees part 1

by bmxultra.com
After finalising our 2007 nominations for the bmxultra.com Hall of Fame, it's time to tell you who these guys were and how they influenced BMX racing in Australia. We will try to describe a few at a time to make it easier on both of us, they are listed in no particular order.

Riders

Jamie Hales (Victoria)
#1 Australia 1981 & 1982, #2 World 1981

Jamie Hales, was the first superstar of Australian BMX. At the age of 16 Jamie made the switch from motocross to BMX. He finished 3rd in the open class at the 1980 Australian Championships which was a 2 round series (Ryde NSW/Brisbane Qld). In 1981 Jamie took out the open class winning his first national crown, he went on to race in America traveling with Mongoose team mates Dean Crisp and Mathew Weeks and took second at the world championships. He followed that up in 1982 with a second win at the Australian Championships, this time in front of a home crowd at the Waverly track. It was about this point that Jamie Hales became a household name, regularly making appearances on TV and was the face of BMX racing on the back of weetbix packets across the country. At Ashmore Qld in 1983 Hales continued to dominate having won his third national championships only to be stripped of the win. Jamie was confused with another Mongoose team member who had caused interference at the start of the race, Western Australia's Darren Miller was awarded the #1 that year and Jamie had to settle for second. In 1985 Mongoose USA was sold and Jamie was out of a job which lead to him fading out of the sport. He returned briefly in 1998 won the Australian Championships and crashed while leading his final at the UCI world championships in Melbourne. Jamie also made an appearance in 2006 at the BSX, he still rides a BMX bike to this day.

Pauline Williams (Victoria)
#1 Australia 1984 & 1985, #1 World 1984
Pauline Williams is the daughter of Keith WIlliams of the Keith Williams medal that BMX Victoria continue to award for outstanding effort at the Victorian Championships. Having won the 16+ girls class at Suzuka in Japan in 1984 she is the first of a string of Australian women who have won the pinnacle class at the world championships. Pauline was well known for her strong riding style and often raced in the men's classes for extra competition, she also was a very confident jumper and had a unique "ski jump" jumping style that gave her an edge over her competition. In the first round of qualifying at the 1984 national championships at Byford WA Pauline fell in the first straight only to get back on her bike and back into the lead in the final straight but fell again just 20 meters before the finish line. She recovered from the fall like a true champion and went on to win the event.

Dean Crisp (Queensland)
#1 Australia (15 boys) 1980 & (Senior cruiser) 1983
Dean Crisp was on the Mongoose Team, after having won the 15 boys class at the first ever Australian championships. In 1981 Dean travelled with Jamie Hales to the US to gain valuable experience. started a company manufacturing number plates and pads. The plates were different to others available at the time with a super light and thin clear plastic panel that was printed onto from behind, making them very popular for their time especially with the weight conscious. Crisp then expanded to race gear. In 1983 he won the senior cruiser class at the Australian Championships at Ashmore in his home state of Queensland. Late in 1984 Crisp Bros added frames and forks to their product line. Dean left Mongoose to promote his own company Crisp Brothers Racing. Dean may not have the titles of his peers, but he was always a contender in the early pro and open classes really dominating at major events around Australia during the early to mid 80's.

Industry

Pat Dillon (Victoria)
PRM (Pure Racing Machinery)

Pat Dillon is responsible for introducing BMX to Victoria having run the first races as demonstration events at motocross tracks, it's said that Jamie Hales showed up to race for his first time at the second Pat Dillon run event. At 14 years old Pat's parents helped him start PRM (Pure Racing Machinery) Australia's premier BMX bike shop specialising in the finest BMX racing products on the market then expanding to freestyle as well as the sport evolved. He was also instrumental in getting the South Eastern BMX track off the ground and creating the premier event in Australia through the 80's and into the early 90's known as the PRM Cash Dash, it was considered one of the most important races of the year, second only to the National Championships. Pat was also quite handy on a race track having raced at pro level until his late 20's. As numbers began to dwindle in the BMX scene Pat closed the doors of PRM and returned to motocross.

Paul Semmel (New South Wales)
PJ/MAD and importer of CW
Paul Semmel is one of the lesser known of our hall of fame nominees. He was the man behind PJ race clothing, pads and seat covers. Paul originally managed a retail store in Sydney, but moved into manufacturing in 1983. The 100% hand made in Sydney PJ products made a big impact on the Australian market in the early to mid 80's. In a time where the Australian BMX industry was at it's strongest PJ competed with Australian brands Invada and Peddlepower as well as US brands like JT, AERO, and others and still managed a to take a large market share. By 1984 the MAD range of gear was also available. Paul pushed his product into the MX market too with some success but eventually faded out of BMX altogether. Paul was also the early distributor for American brand CW that are now popular amongst the old schoolers for their unique handlebar design, high quality chrome jobs and the infamous "Z" frame. He had put together a strong CW national team to help market the CW and his own PJ products.

Graeme Stevenson (Queensland)
SLA (Super Light Alloy)
Graeme Stevenson was involved in BMX racing on many levels; as a rider, official and an innovator as a frame manufacturer. Graeme was as well know for his frames as he was for his excentric outfits he would wear to the track, fortunatly his sence of "style" wasn't transfered to his frame designs. In the early 80's, along with SE Racing and Race Inc, he was one of few frame manufacturers in the world toying with Alloy as a substitute for crome-moly. He had much success across the country with his frames, especially in Queensland. With his reputation as a master frame builder he later went on to manufacture frames for other Australian companies in addition to SLA. Graeme is infamous as the official who made the controversial call that saw Jamie Hales stripped of his #1 Australia crown at Ashmore Qld in 1983.

More 2007 nominees to come.

19/12 Phirebird - Questions Answered

Phirebird press release
Thankyou to all interested personnel’s for there input towards the Phirebird training system. See below your answers to your questions!

Why have TPB decided to add this style of coaching to their list of coaching opportunities?
To let you know about why this program came about, it was being noticed by various TPB coaches, that there are many BMX athletes with many physical challenges preventing them from progressing at a rate they could be capable of IF they addressed underlying physical issues. This is even more so for the many female athletes in the sport.

This program is designed to start bridging the gap between your current athletic limits and your potential. It is a foundation builder that will give you the best possible physical tools required to more effectively be able to handle the demands that the TPB coaches will place you under during your coaching sessions. For you this means you will receive more value from the future one-on-one or small group on-bike coaching sessions and progress at a faster more effective rate.

We decided that if we want you, the athlete, to get more out of our coaching session you need to be in better physical condition.

What makes this program different to any other training program?
Even though all the programming and technology is all shinny and impressive, and no one has come even close to what we are doing in BMX coaching, it comes down to one thing - the people behind it! Our coaches are amongst the best in the world based on results, and our associate professional like our physical preparation coach, masseuse, Dr’s etc. all work with elite athletes who compete nationally and internationally. These people are not just people who know a bit lifting weight or rehabilitating injuries, these people do it for a living and get results!

Do you only coach people in the Queensland, Australia region?
No. We have spent countless months coming up with a system that makes you a better athlete no matter where you are in the world! The way we coach is unique and allows us to train anyone in the world who has access to the internet and phone.

How much, hands-on bike work do I receive and how can I get it if I live in Brazil?
This is where the technology will come to play. Podcasts will be one of the ways we can get this information to you among others. We belief in being flexible in our approach to training so there may be opportunities for things like live coaching or conference calls for e.g.

What age group or level is this program recommended for?
Any! All aspects of the program are customised to your needs based on the results of the assessment process. Our coaches are skilful and experienced enough to be able to help you achieve your goal no matter what age or level you are.

Would this program benefit my child for the coming National Titles? YES, like you would not believe if they are a willing student!!!!

Who do you currently coach?
Nice try! We respect the privacy of all our clients. Names are only used if it is ok with the athletes but we never talk about their private details, which is kept between the coach and the athlete/guardian. What we can tell you is that last season 94% of our athletes achieved better results than the season before, you just have to decide if these sorts of results are for you or not!

Can I see a demo of what to expect regarding detail of program?
This is tough considering that none of your programs have been written yet because we know nothing about you. If we showed you a sample program you would get nothing out of it because you would not understand where it has come from. The best demo we can give you is for you to do the program and see for yourself!

When does this program start?
It will be kicking off in the first week of January, those who decide to take action will be more informed.

What happens to me after the 12 weeks is up?
That will be up to you. We expect great results if you remain disciplined throughout the 12 weeks so chances are you will want to continue being coached by TPB. We will be offering a special continuation opportunity towards the end of the 12 weeks that has been designed to be VERY cost effective for you to excel even further.

The option to customise your TPB coaching experience will be available also.

Why only 20 riders?
Twenty because we want to focus on individual athletes that are serious about their performance and provide them an experience like never before.

The timing is not right for us right now, when can we take advantage of this offer again?
Simple answer is no but Phirebird will continually run this program @ certain times of the year for specific events. This particular offer will only be seen once as we do understand life is about timing and this is why this is a one time offer we guarantee it will never be repeated because we want to reward those willing to take action NOW not later!

So there you have it BMX fans, we hope that we have covered all your concerns relating to this exciting opportunity if not keep the questions coming. It’s your call or email that will make the difference, stop thinking and start doing… see you on the gate!

14/12 30 + Masters at the Australian Championships

by Shane Jenkins/bmxultra.com
The time has come that former pros in the 30 + classes will be recognised at the Australian Championships. There is a small glitch in the rules which may see it as an undersubscribed class when it is run for the first time in 2007 however.

Excerpt from the 2007 Australian Championships entry form
30+ Masters Class (Male Only) is only open to
previous AA/Elite Competitors who have not raced AA/Elite
in previous 12 month period before 06/05/2007.

What this could mean is that some of the fastest guys in the 30 + classes will have to race the amature classes because they have competed in AA in the 12 months prior. I can think of names like Simon Anderson (Vic), Karl Mustchin (WA), Brett Scruse (NSW), and possibly Craig Fisher (ACT) that would have raced as a AA during this period, but I am sure with 12 months notice that those guys would have made the sacrifice to compete in a class that's perfect for them.

How is is fair on anyone that are 30 + that are fast and never rode as an AA/Elite rider to not have the chance to compete in the masters event over the amature class? And how is it fair that the guys who are more in it for fun will have to compete against some the fastest 30 + riders in the country because of a glitch in the rules?

About BSX
BSX is short for Bicycle Supercross. We pair up some of Australia's best pro BMXers on a 2 man track, much like Stumpy's DC sprint trails, in a one on one elimination style race until we find a winner. It's a BMX event like none other in the country. The riders are challenged on a short technical track while having a whole lot of fun and at the same time putting on a show for the spectators. The event created an atmosphere that's too hard to put into words and must be experienced. Last year Luke Madill took the win, can he come back from spinal injuries and take it again?

Next year the event will be held at Kinglake West, Victoria (just an hour north of Melbourne) on Monday January 22. It's the day after the UCI Pacific Oceania round at Knox (during the Track Attack series).

13/12 Team Redline [Aust] Report, December 2006

Team Redline Australia press release
Pascoe named BMX Junior Elite cyclist of the year.
Redline’s Todd Pascoe recently travelled to Melbourne for the annual cyclist of the year awards dinner where he was named BMX Cyclist of the year in the Junior Elite category.

Todd was in great company with fellow Queensland nominee’s Wade Bootes, Jamie Grey, Kamakazi, Krystal Cranfield, Renee Junga and Melissa Mankowski.

Congratulations Todd on a great achievement.

Victorian State Championships
Redline’s Victorian representatives, Ziggy, Josh and Damien Callan along with team mate Luke Pretlove raced the Victorian Titles at the end of November.

Ziggy cleaned up in Junior Women taking first place and then placed 7th in pro cruiser against the guys, which included her dad, Damien. We understand that Damien was relieved to get away with a 5th placing in front of Ziggy. His days of leading his daughter around the track may be numbered, especially now that Ziggy has conquered the big Knox doubles.

Josh rode AA men and made the finals, placing 7th against some outstanding opposition. Great result for Josh in his first event as a AA.

Luke Pretove took first place in AA cruiser and 5th place in AA men.

Team Redline hits the Pro Circuit.
Round one & two, Probikx / Champbix, Perth WA.

Team members Todd Pascoe, Michael Vockenson, Ashley Pemberton, Ziggy Callan, Josh Callan & Justin Braybon all travelled to Perth for the first rounds of the Probikx / Champbikx national series. They were joined by Redline’s local rising star, Trent Evans.

Trent Evans cleaned up in his Champbikx class, convincingly winning the 15 year boys events on both days. Trent had to take on Brendan Abel and Ryan Faux, both of whom are considered to be top performers nationally in this highly competitive class. A remarkable performance from this talented rider.

Todd Pascoe also put in a remarkable performance, making both Senior Elite finals against the best in his class. A great result given it’s his first year in with the big boys.

Ziggy Callan was outstanding again in Junior Women placing first on both days.

Josh Callan put in his typical 100% performance in the 16 year boys class against some very tough opposition. Placed 6th on day one and took out first place on day two.

Michael Vocko and Ashley Pemberton both raced Junior men, a class that is packed full of talented riders. Michael placed 2nd day one and 8th on day two after a crash. Ashley crashed out of the day one semis but came back in a big way for a 3rd on day two.

Overall standings after two rounds.
Ziggy Callan in 1st
Trent Evans in 1st
Josh Callan in 3rd
Vocko in 4th
Pembo in 6th
Todd in 8th

Justin Braybon who unfortunately copped a bout of glandular fever while in Perth is in 6th place.Get well soon Justin – from all.

Congratulations to all the Redline riders.

12/12 Staats Aus/NZ news

Sirius Bicycles Press Release
Team Staats will be very busy in the New Year.
I can now confirm that all of the eight Team Staats (AUS) riders will be at the Nerang Nationals next month racing for the very first time as a team. And as it turns out Alexandra Williams, Kane Barry, & Wyatt Clinch, - all Kiwi Staats team riders, will also be making the trip across to the Gold Coast to join them.

I’m certain of one thing… & that is that Staats Bicycles will be well represented at the first major race meeting of the New Year.

The Nerang Nationals is one of the larger races on the Australian calendar & this time around the race will be even bigger as it is not only a UCI ranking round but BMXA Champbikx & Probikx rounds also. 2007 is the first season of Probikx & this series promises to be a highly entertaining & fiercely competitive one.

Tim Ferguson (Elite Men) & Josh Webb (Junior Men) have been in fine form of late with solid performances at the recent New Zealand Titles in New Plymouth. Tim & Josh finished 4th & 2nd respectively in UCI racing & although early in the season both are in a good position with an 8th (tied) & 4th place in the (Oceanic region) overall standings.

Kevin Watson & Madison Janssen will be racing on their home track & should have the rub of the green (or is that brown?) & therefore be hot favourites to win their respective classes.

Staats Bicycles will also have a strong presence at the Toowoomba Open in February, reportedly Australia’s richest race with over $3000 on offer for the Pros.

Staats is to be the naming sponsor of the special event for 10 Boys – “The Staats Bicycles Tens”. According to event coordinator Kent Elliot, the 10 Boys class has one of the highest rider counts & is an extremely competitive class. And as a money class for these 10 year old pocket rockets first place is a $125 cash prize… not bad for a days racing!

For full event details go to www.toowoomba.bmxa.com.au.

Team Staats AUS is proudly sponsored by; Ciari Parts www.ciariparts.com, Fly Racing www.flyracingbmx.com, & ATi www.rideati.com.

11/12 Battery BSX2007 more goodies

by bmxultra.com
42 days until the Battery BSX2007.

We have currently raised $1000 for the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation.

Open day
With bushfires burning around the state, a level 2 training clinic and 42C degree day (that's around 110F for our US friends) we had only 6 riders show for the open day on Sunday. Levi Collins and Brian Kelly were attacking the track in the hot and dry conditions with Brandan Bullows styling it up at every opportunity showing Chase Collins, Chris Van Winden and Shane Jenkins how it's done. While we didn't have a start gate to have some races we were able to iron out some small problems around the track. The jumps and corners held up well and will just require a little tidy up and a lot of water. Let's hope for some rain to help fight the bushfires and soak the track.

In the past 11 months we have been making small changes to the track taking out some of the jumps to open it up a little, make it faster and more fun for the riders. The aim was to make it a little less technical too, it's pretty much as techy as BSX2006 with bigger jumps. As the track gets rolled in and watered over the coming weeks it should only get better, faster and easier.

08/12 Victorian State Series

by Shane Jenkins/bmxultra.com
We have some information on the Victorian State Series and while it might be what the riders want, a series, it worries me that it may not be of much benefit to Victorian riders in the proposed format.

What the Victorian riders need in the lead up to the Nationals is some good hard racing. The format for the Am classes is 4 rounds of motos and no finals. That's right, no finals. The points all contribute to the overall award. That's nice for people racing the whole series with a series focus. But let's take a step back and think about it...ok you've had enough time...at the Nationals riders are under immense pressure in elimination finals, so shouldn't we be giving the riders finals? Shouldn't we be putting them under pressure? And what about the riders that can't make all rounds for whatever reason. Is there any point for them to even race? Give them a final to race in and there will be.

There will also be a pro open class and 30 & over money class, with 3 motos and finals and 100% of the entries going back to the prize pools. I personally think this is a problem too. To give these riders the best possible racing it should be AA pro and A pro, forget 30 & Over money class for the series. This needs to be run at big individual events if you want everyone to turn up and make it worth while racing, events that might attract interstate riders, like Track Attack, Cash Dash or Thunderdome. The numbers will be dissapointing you can mark my words.

Here's the venues and dates:

08/12 Greg Leisure needs your help

by Steve Spencer
This is a call out to the BMX community. It is time to come together and help out a great friend to all.... Mr. Greg Leasure.

Many of you may have been following the reports on Greg since falling ill in Tulsa. To summarize what Greg has experienced:

Greg began to feel ill on the Friday 11/17 while driving with the ABA crew to Tulsa. It started with chills, fever, and nausea. The next day it continued and Greg figured it was the flu and with some fluids and rest it would run its course. On Sunday night he started to get shortness of breath and asked to be taken to the hospital. While in the hospital Greg was placed on IV's and after a brief evaluation it was determined he had a bad case of pneumonia. He was issued antibiotics, inhaler and pain med's. He felt slightly better on Monday but was still unable to hold down any food and most liquids.

Early Wednesday morning Greg woke up his roomy Dan Mooney and said he felt worse than ever and needed to go back to the hospital. Dan rushed him over and Greg was immediately admitted for observation. New xrays showed that the liquid in Greg's left lung had increased significantly.

At this point a doctor stated that Greg may have cancer and would have to have a biopsy performed! This news escalated Greg's anxiety along with those of who are close to him. Greg's girlfriend Lizzie immediately flew out to Tulsa to be with him. Greg was released on Thursday and flew back home to Phoenix in hopes to get in to a doctor at one of the premier medical facilities in the country, the Mayo Clinic. Greg's condition was not improving all while in the back of his head he kept hearing the word "cancer".

Greg's attempts to get into a doctor were delayed due to insurance changes that were taking place with his recent move from San Diego to Phoenix plus the Mayo Clinic's scheduling did not have him due to come in until sometime in January!!! Greg's mom and Lizzie were persistent in communicating Greg's condition to the Mayo Clinic which led to Greg's appointment on 12/06.

The examination concluded that Greg did not have cancer but did have what is called Valley Fever (http://www.dhpe.org/infect/valley.html ). The condition is sometimes fatal but Greg is in the right hands now. Greg is now at ease with the cancer-cloud no longer looming over head.

The whole ordeal did not come without a price. Greg has amassed a substantial medical bill. Greg is presently in between jobs since moving to Phoenix and is very concerned about addressing the medical bills. This is where we come in. Please find it in your hearts and wallets to help Greg out. Any amount will be gladly accepted and greatly appreciated. Those of you who know Greg know that he would be the first one to spearhead a fundraising effort if any of you needed the assistance.

Greg lives and breaths BMX and is a friend to all in the BMX community. He is the US Marketing/Advertising Director for BMX World Magazine, an avid contributor to the BMX forums, one bad-azz racer for Factory Avent/Bombshell who had his Grands/NAG dreams knocked out from underneath him this year and is ONE HELL OF A FRIEND and a human being.

Please, let us band together and help out our brother in need. You can send your donations via PAYPAL to:

07/12 bmxultra.com Hall of Fame

bmxultra.com press release
We think it's time that the people who helped create and shape BMX in Australia are recognised for their contributions. There are many fantastic individuals who helped bring the sport to the masses, from running the first races, to opening the first BMX specific clubs, to contributing to our own BMX industry, to performing in front of TV cameras. All of which would make BMX a national phenomenon in the early 80's.

As new people come into the sport today, some even second generation BMXers themselves, the tales of these great pioneers fade. It's not our intention to create legends but to remember them, to remind people of our roots and our rich history.

There are two categories in the bmxultra.com Hall of Fame; rider and industry. We had initially considered volunteer as well but have decided that's up to the governing bodies to award.

After many nominations and discussions we have come up with our first list of nominees, there are many more names we will introduce for the second wave, but believe these were the first of the pioneers in the sport.

Riders

Industry

Jamie Hales (Vic),
Darren Miller (WA),
Dean Crisp (Qld),
Wayne McIntosh (NSW),
Leigh Egan (Vic)

Graeme Stevens - SLA (Qld),
Dean Crisp - Crisp Bros Racing (Qld),
Pedal Power (Qld),
Pat Dillon - PRM (Vic),
Steve Cassap - Cassap (Vic),
Paul Semmel - PJ/Mad (NSW),
Scott Sheppard - BMX International (Qld)

We will still consider additional first round nominees but as the Jan 20, 2007 awards day is rapidly approaching we have to move forward.

We will be putting together a seperate page for the bmxultra.com Hall of Fame with descriptions of each of the nominees. If there are any readers that can help us with information or photos please email them to webmaster@bmxultra.com.

06/12 Sun Ringle' Riders Sweep ABA Pro Titles

Sun Ringle press release
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you probably already know who took home the big shiny cups from the ABA Grands last week in Tulsa OK. What you may not have known is that all 4 Pro Titles this year were won on Sun Ringle’ wheels. It’s no secret that Sun Rims can be found on almost every top BMX racer on the track so we’re used to our riders winning and having success. But sweeping all the Pro Titles for the year is definitely something to brag about.

CMC/Tangent’s Alise “the Beast” Post had an incredible rookie year in Girl Pro, taking the Golden Crank Award for Rookie of the Year (beating out the guys for this award) and then winning the ABA Girl Pro Title a few days later. Alise rides the Sun 4Stroke Race wheelset. “

Redline’s “Black Jack” Jason Carnes came back from early season knee surgery to take the ABA Vet Pro title for the fifth year in a row. Jason rides the Sun 4Stroke Race wheelset.

“The Little Engine that Did” Formula’s Donnie D.R. Robinson capped off his awesome 2006 season by winning the Golden Crank Award for Pro of the Year and the ABA Pro Cruiser Title. Donnie rides the Sun CR18 1.5 rims.

And some guy they call “Bubba” made history this weekend by becoming the first Pro in history to win the ABA Pro Title 3 years in a row. Redline’s Bubba Harris has ridden the Sun Pro Super Stock wheelset to all 3 of his ABA Pro Titles.

And not to be forgotten, Sun co-sponsored Redman/Yamaha Waverunner won the Factory Team Title for 2006 as well.

Congrats to all of our riders for a dominating season and thanks for taking Sun Ringle' along for the ride.

06/12 bmxultra.com team update

bmxultra.com press release
The bmxultra.com crew were out in force at the Victorian Championships, for the first time ever bmxultra.com submitted a team for the team trophy, finishing equal third and only 20 points off the winning Kuwahara/BMXMAD team. Be on the look out for the team who will be aiming at #1 in the future.

Levi Collins had a good meeting with 3rd in AA mens cruiser and 6th in the tough AA pro mens class.

Shane Jenkins finished up with a 6th in A mens cruiser but didn't have much luck in A men.

Co-sponsored riders

Danny Galea had a fantastic meeting in 30-34 men and 30-34 cruiser taking the clean sweep in both classes and winning the Keith Williams medal for his outstanding efforts. Danny was also riding in the A Pro mens class but only got as far as the semis.

Adam Carey had a little bad luck in the AA Men's class, he didn't make the main at only his second major event as a AA pro, but he gained valuable experience against a tough field.

Scooby Guyers made the 16 boys semi but didn't manage to get any further, he did take 3rd in A men cruiser.

Jamie Bullows had a great weekend finishing 3rd in 30-34 men and 3rd in 30-34 cruiser. Both were behind former State Pro champions Danny Galea and Simon Anderson.

Brandan Bullows also did a fantastic job, he finished 3rd in 13 boys and 3rd in 13-14 cruiser. Brandon is also co-sponsored by SE Bikes and rode on their team for the teams challenge. The team finished 5th behind team bmxultra.com.

Brett MaliC was all set to come to the event but was struck down by a lung infection. Wolfman stayed in South Australia with him.

The bmxultra.com team is proudly supported by One Bicycles, Supercross BMX, Answer BMX, Dirt Designs, ATi grips, and Tektro brakes.

05/12 Safety

by Shane Jenkins/bmxultra.com
Have you ever wondered who comes up with the rules in Australia to protect the riders from potential harm? Like the rule of tucking your jersey into your pants. It always amuses me, I can't help but think it was one of the older guys in our sport who is very proud of his appearance tucking himself in at every opportunity in fine harry high pants style. It's a rule that never has really worked, most race pants are low cut and jerseys aren't very long either. So a rider would tuck themselves in and on the gate the jersey would come out again. I am just guessing but I think that the assumption was that riders might get caught on a loose jersey. Last I looked elbows and handlebars stuck out a lot further than someone's waist. If a rider was going to crash it wouldn't be because of a jersey being tucked in or not, in fact if a jersey was tucked in it would be more likely that a handlebar would get caught in it and a rider pulled from their bike.
And what about this new rule we keep hearing about with wearing "tear resistant" pants. I don't know if people realise but when you use granetic sand or that crushed rock surface that's so popular in Australia it is full of small stones that would shred a carbon fibre helmet let alone any type of cloth. It would be safer for the riders to change the surface of every Australian track to straight clay. And what about the riders that want to try the sport for the first time? Are we going to tell them they can't use track pants or jeans because they aren't tear resistant? I think if someone does some research they will find that some jeans and track pants would cope better than some of the race pants on the market.
In the US gloves and pads are optional for racing. I don't recommend that we push for similar rules here because I know how many times gloves have saved my hands. In fact while people are talking about "tear resistant" clothing they forget about the optional elbow, knee and chest protection. No matter how good pants and jersey can be you will always manage to lose some skin in a fall even if you don't tear your clothing. Elbow and knee guards are so under-rated, they can protect riders from injuries that would keep them off their bikes or even end careers.
Why do people spend so much time thinking about safety issues even 30+ years after the sport was created? There are far bigger issues like improving the attendance rates at race meetings for example.
What I am trying to say is that it doesn't matter what you wear, unless you consider additional protection like elbow and knee guards there will always be some risk of injury.
This sport was always strongest when we had less rules. It was more affordable, it was simpler, it was a lot more fun.

by bmxultra.com
49 days until the Battery BSX2007.
We have currently raised $1000 for the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation.
Open day Sunday December 10 @ 11 am email webmaster@bmxultra.com for details.
Before we start I would like to thank Matt Dickenson, Maddy Denholm, Jye Denholm, and Matt Dunsworth for helping out with the track on Saturday. A couple of other guys that I must thank are Shannon Rademaker and Chris Van Winden without them the track changes would not have been possible.

Kinglake West CFA catering
We have confirmed that the Kinglake West CFA will be catering for BSX2007. They did a fantastic job supplying BBQed food and drink at BSX2006 and asked if they could do it again before we even had a chance to ask them back. All money they raise by CFA goes back to the CFA to help pay for new equipment and maintenance. Only days after BSX2006 Kinglake experienced the biggest fires in the area for over 50 years, no houses were lost. BSX is proud to help the CFA and the Kinglake community.

ECI/THE/ITS join the crusade
One of Australia's biggest BMX distributors, Elite Cycle Imports, have joined the crusade to help us raise money for the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation. We have just received a box full of THE and Intense Tire Systems products for auctions and raffles including;

Open day Sunday December 10
A lot of work has been done to the track and most of it while the dirt was very dry so we need help rolling it in and making final tweeks. If you are looking for something to do on Sunday December 10 from about 11 am it would really help us out if you could come and ride the track, and it may even give you an edge to get to know the track before BSX2007. It's not 100% certain if we will have a gate on the day but we'll do our best to organise something. Riders must understand they will be riding at their own risk until BSX2007 which will be fully insured, but that's the same as if you were riding the local dirt jumps anyway.

Make a donation
We understand that many of you can't make the event so we have posted an electronic donation form on the BSX webpage. If you would like to make a donation download the form which has all the details. All donations over $2 are tax deductable.

04/12 Hog’s Breath Probikx Australian Tour

BMX Australia press release
Cameron and Callisto Win First National BMX Tour
The Hog’s Breath Café Probikx National Tour got underway today in Perth. Over 100 of Australia’s top riders raced in a packed two hour program at the Hills BMX Track. This weekend's racing is in a format similar to what riders will face at the Beijing Olympics.

Sydney's Alex Cameron pushed all the way to the finish line to win while early leader, Gold Coast’s Wade Bootes came second. Finish line judges were challenged as four riders were shoulder to shoulder. Warwick Stevenson (Sydney) finished a close third while Michael “Tiger” Robinson narrowly missed a podium spot. Junior BMX Cyclists of the Year, Todd Pascoe (Townsville) came fifth while Luke Madill crashed but did not sustain an injury.

Cameron stayed behind the leaders allowing Bootes and Robinson to push the pace early then came from behind in the final straight to win. Cameron also won the first National Mountain Cross race in Sydney last month.

Perth’s Nicole Callisto returned to racing for the first time after knee surgery with a convincing win. Callisto caught the fast starting Tanya Bailey going underneath her on the second corner then powered away to win convincingly. Junior BMX Cyclist of the Year, Melissa Mankowshi (Moranbah), rode herself into second place with Bailey was relegated to third. A return to the racing today for five-time BMX World Champion Rachael Sheridan (Sydney) indicates the interest in the women’s ranks in making it to the Beijing Olympics.

The largest field was the 16 boys will Sam Willoughby from Adelaide taking the win. Kirsten Delllar (Tom Price) showed the training camp run earlier in the week was effective when she beat older riders to win the 16 girl’s division. Local Hills Club rider, Trent Evans, took out the 15 boys and Cockburn’s Shannon Evans won the 14 boys.

Riders rode time trials as they will for UCi events such as the Olympics and experiened rider, Wade Bootes (#74), demonstrated age is no barrier when he qualified fastest in 36.01. Cale McCullough (#723) from Perth was second quickest in 36.55. Both Perth women blitzed the time trail with the fastest times with Callisto riding a 41.56 and Bailey a 42.18.

Madill makes comeback from serious injury
Luke Madill (# 17 Penrith, NSW) laid his claim on a Beijing Olympic berth today after winning the second round of the Hog’s Breath BMX National Tour in Perth. The 2005 National Champion is back from serious neck injury in May which saw him hospitalized for two months.

Daniel Johnstone (#22 Terrigal, NSW) stayed on Madill’s wheel and was ahead of a massive tangle in the first berm to finish second. Bill Hobbs (#155, Quin’s Rock, WA) and Wade Bootes (#72 Gold Coast, QLD) got caught in the ‘wash’ and finished third and fourth respectively. Bootes now leads the Series with 189 points while Madill sits second on the table with 169 points. Yesterday’s winner, Alex Cameron made it into third on the series table. Warwick Stevenson was eliminated in the semi-finals. BMX Junior Cyclist of the Year, Todd Pascoe (#338, Townsville), now racing with elite landed heavily in the semi-final but got up to finish and make it into the final to place eighth.

In the women's elite, two Perth riders finished neck and neck with Tanya Bailey (# 17 Manjimup, WA) winning from 2004 World Junior Champion, Nicole Callisto (#55, Beechboro, WA). Top ranked Australian, Bailey was able to keep the rising star, Callisto, at bay. Callisto returned to racing this weekend for the first time since her knee reconstruction saw her sidelined in January this year. The girls raced on their home track of Wanneroo but have recently moved to Sydney to pursue their Olympic pursuits. After winning yesterday at Hills in Perth, Callisto now leads the series by 231 points with Bailey in second on 211 points. The return of five time World Champion, Rachel Simpson (Sydney) with a third place makes it clear that the wife of Sydney Kings player could be out for a spot in the Olympic team. BMX Junior Cyclist of the Year, Melissa Mankowski finished fourth.

Junior rider, Ben Davis (#56, Byford, WA) won from Matthew Willoughby from and Townsville’s Ashley Pemberton. Victorians, Ziggy Callan (#46) and Joshua Callan (#107), won their races in junior women and 16 boys respectively. U/15 boys winner over the two days was Trent Evans (#19, Forestfield, WA) who now has a strong lead in the series.

02/12 NBL King of Flats

NBL press release
Dust off those old school rides and haul them out to the NBL Christmas Classic, December 28. The NBL is serving up the KING OF FLATS race on Thursday with a retro-cool display of the oldies. Hey, if you decide to race one of those ol’ rides, NBL will reward you for your courage whether it’s a Skyway TA, CW Phase One, Mongoose, VDC, or any number of other classic bikes. Yeah, the race is only open to 30 & Over Am’s on 20” bikes and its only $20 to play – heck, some of these guys are the ones who help pioneer the early years so it’s a chance for the purists to relive the glory days. Be sure to keep those clips in the cooler though, this race is just for FLATS… the KING OF FLATS. Oh yeah, and if there are any ladies/women/powderpuffs, who want to put together a QUEEN OF FLATS, a minimum of 8 will get you a class too. How’s that 20” looking Deanna?

Standard Byke is providing some of the goodies and the top 3, at minimum, will get some new, fancy FLAT pedal shoes. Bruce Balay of Crossroads BMX is putting together the bike show so contact him at 317-213-3955 or bmxinc@yahoo.com and you can now register online for this class, or any of the standard NBL classes, at www.nbl.org.

01/12 Victorian Championships report part 3

by Shane Jenkins/bmxultra.com
There were so many big classes at the Victorian Championships that it would be hard to cover them all. The two stand outs for the meeting won the Keith Williams medal. Both Danny Galea and Sophie Tye took a clean sweep of their 20" and cruiser classes. Danny also competed in A pro but was eliminated in the semi finals.

In the pro cruiser classes Luke Pretlove won AA with Jonathan Hoare in second and Levi Collins in third, Connor Hunter won A followed by Aaron Wheatland and Scooby Guyers. Ziggy Callan was also getting amongst it with the A pro cruiser guys and don't worry she kept the guys on their toes.

Gary Morgan doubled in the 40-44 20" and cruiser.
Madison Denholm doubled in 11-12 cruiser and 12 class.
Leigh Huitema doubled in the 19-24 cruiser and 20" class.
Craig Walczuk and Bruce Watman shared a 1st and a 2nd each in the 35-39 20" and cruiser.

Kuwahara/BMXMAD took out the teams trophy with 261158 in second and the Lilydale Flyers and team bmxultra.com shared third place points.

The Knox track was in perfect condition and the event was well run. Day 2 was a little dragged out, but it was mostly because of a serious crash in the last straight where Simon Braunthal went down heavily. Calling out name, club, and number to introduce the semi finalists was a bit of an overkill, maybe just a name would have been enough. Those guys deserve a little recognition for making the semis but they aren't finals. Even the officials were twiddling their thumbs and checking their watches when that was going on.

The 2006 Victorian Championships have set a new standard of recent times it will be interesting to see what will happen at Park Orchards next year.
