28/02 Competition - Win tickets to see BRA BOYS

by bmxultra.com
Sorry guys, this is limited to Victorian's only
Win tickets to see new movie BRA BOYS…
Narrated by Russell Crowe, BRA BOYS tells the story of one of the most notorious surf tribes in the world and their unofficial leaders, the Abberton brothers. Hailing from the troubled housing commissions of Maroubra beach in Sydney’s south, this tribe has produced some of the world’s most renowned big wave surfers, including Koby Abberton. In an attempt to escape their tragic upbringing, many have found redemption in the ocean and family amongst the tribe brotherhood.
BRA BOYS shoots straight to the heart and takes no prisoners. With the freshness and energy of a DOGTOWN AND Z BOYS, incredible surf footage, a lifetime of intimate archival footage and personal interviews, BRA BOYS is certain to become a modern Aussie classic.
For your chance to win one of 10 complimentary double passes (valid at participating cinema locations in Victoria from March 15), be amongst the first to email rachelb@hopscotchfilms.com.au with BMX Ultra in the subject line and your name and postal address in the email. Only winners will be notified.
If you would like to learn more about “Bra Boys” the movie, you can catch the trailer on www.braboys.com.au

28/02 New classes at the 2007 Australian Championships

by bmxultra.com
There has been quite a stir amongst the challenge class riders about discrimination against the female competitors. The UCI have added new classes to the 2007 World BMX Championships and in turn BMX Australia will be offering the same classes at the 2007 Australian Championships. From what I can make out the entry form won't change so you might have to add the new class in to the current list of classes if you plan to enter one of them.

I asked for clarification of the 30+ Elite Masters class and this is what Andrew Nolen said in an email:

28/02 NBL Lake Mead National, Boulder City, Nevada

NBL press release
Round 4 of the 2007 NBL Elite Points series was held this past weekend in Boulder City, Nevada. The Nellis BMX Track is one of, if not the best BMX track in the NBL track list and this event had the making of a history making weekend: an all star International field of the world best Men's and Women's Pros and amateurs, UCI and NBL Pro points, history making National attendance for an NBL West Coast National, and perfect race weather. For the Double A Marketing riders, they made history as well, as they won all of the Elite Junior and Elite Men classes this weekend, making it a clean sweep for both Joey Bradford and Cristian Becerine. The other Double A Marketing riders in attendance also had some impressive results. Here is how the guys finished up:

Cristian Becerine has won at least one day of the Elite Men's Pro class at the last 3 national events and this weekend, he was unstoppable, taking home the win both days in Elite Men's action. At what may have been the most stacked Pro class in years, Cristian took the win both days from the gate to the finish line unchallenged. Cristian now holds the lead in both the NBL and ABA pro points and looks to be on his way to winning his first year end National #1 Pro title. Cristian's Sponsors include: Free Agent, Fly Racing, Sinz Racing Products, Kenda, THE Products, ODI, Sun Ringle, Shimano, Powerbar, Cyto Sport, OGIO, Oakley, Thomson Seat Posts, and BMXpros.com

Joey Bradford was just as impressive in the Junior Men's class as he too took home wire to wire wins both days this weekend. Joey also has his NBL team debut and they looked great along the front row of teams with there GT tent proudly set up and information available about all of the teams sponsors. This kid just does it all and does it all very well! Joey’s sponsors include GT Bicycles, Fly Racing, Oakley, Bombshell, THE Products, Sun Ringle, Kenda, SDG, FSA, Sponsorhouse, ODI, Powerbar, Cyto Sport, Circle E, SRAM, Avid, OGIO, Sirius, joeybradford.com, and BMXpros.com

Brandon Meadows made a huge statement at the Nellis event, as he was in the Elite Men's Pro main event both days, aboard his all new Intense Podium frame. After recovering from a broken femur suffered last year, Brandon has once again persevered and come back stronger than ever. Making the main event in the Elite men's class is a huge accomplishment for any pro and for a Pro coming back from such a huge injury, its just plain amazing. We are glad to see Brandon getting back to his top form and the 6th and 7th place finishes this weekend are a huge payoff for the hard work on his part. Brandon's Sponsors include Intense BMX, Socko Energy Drinks, SINZ Racing, THE Products, Fly Racing, Shimano, Power Bar, Intense Tire Systems, Cyto Sport, OGIO, Thomson Seat Posts, and BMXpros.com

Randy Stumpfhauser looked to be one of the few pros who may have been able to put a stop to Cristian's winning streak, as on Saturday, he was untouchable and won every lap on the track all the way up to the main event. As the gate dropped for the main, Randy was just a bit off of Cristian and would win up 5th for the day. On Sunday, Randy would have to watch the main event from the sidelines after unclipping out of the gate in the semi. Randy is a true pro and congratulated Cristian on his win. Look for Randy to be back in the mix for the Pro win in a few weeks at the ABA Winter Nationals. Randy's sponsors include GT Bicycles, Kenda, ODI, Tangent, Sun Rims, Bombshell, Fly Racing, SINZ Products, Powerbar, CTI Knee Braces, OGIO, SDG, SRAM, Easton, Cyto Sport, and BMXpros.com.

Double A Marketing proudly represents Cristian Becerine, Kyle Bennett, Joey Bradford, Dale Holmes, Brandon Meadows, and Randy Stumpfhauser. For more information on any of the riders or on Double A Marketing, please visit BMXPros.com

27/02 Review: THE Eurorack

One of the essentials of a BMX racer is obviously getting his bike to and from the track, here's one option. Click here to check out the review of the THE Eurorack.

27/02 South Australia's state championships

by Shane Jenkins/bmxultra.com
I am regularly at Adelaide and I usually take my bike and ride tracks like The Cove and Happy Valley. It was my first time at the new Cross Keys track that I have been hearing so much about. Reviews have been both good and bad. "It's a big, elite/pro style track", "the jumps and corners aren't quite right", "junior riders will struggle to get arround it" and "it doesn't flow" are probably the most common I had heard through the grapevine. I thought the only way to get a full picture of the track is to experience it for myself, and with the addition of the UCI and Probikx rounds to the South Australian championships there was bound to be some good racing.

The first things I noticed when I started to cut some laps was the fence along the second straight was unusually close to the track, the straight was maybe only 4 meters wide at most and the sheer drops down both sides of the jumps were a worry. Add to that small and rough corners that would be impossible to pull any moves on and the track was breaking up. On Saturday the track had been rolled and felt a lot faster and was easier to carry speed through, but some of the jumps and the corners still felt like they needed to be finished off. I am sure that it's something the club will focus on as time and money allows. It's shaped to look very similar to the 2003 world championships track just not built quite as well. Maybe since the Taylor brothers from Western Australia were so influential in building the worlds track they could have been brought in to help with this build.

I arrived in time for the UCI/Probikx finals on Saturday. Only to see Jared Graves out in front until the last corner where Khalen Young exposed Graves' lack of experience on the BMX track. As Graves entered the last corner Young struck. Braking much later into the corner he as able to get up under Graves and send him up and over the corner. In doing so took the lead but allowed the rest of the field to catch up, half way down the last straight Marc Willers and Luke Madill were making a charge to the line. Willers had pulled his front wheel up next to Young's back wheel but lost ballance and lent on Young where their wheels locked sending Young over the bars and Willers hit the deck as well. Madill had no time to react and rode into them allowing Kamakazi to take the win and Graves, who had been relegated back in the field took second, Brian Kirkham took the three spot. Tiger Robinson and Jamie Gray finished in for fourth and fifth.

Elite women had only six riders Sarah Walker took the overall, with Tanya Bailey in second and Melissa Mankowski in third. These girls were very impressive on a tough track showing they had just as much skill as some of the elite men.

The block system that the SABMXA were running with didn't seem well thought out. Maybe they were expecting a whole lot more riders where it would have made sense. There was very little atmosphere at the UCI/Probikx and most people didn't show up until the practice for the regular classes. They also would have had more people at the track for the UCI/Probikx main event if they ran the age classes closer to it on Saturday rather than the cruiser and sprocket classes.

Karlten Wolsey dominated the 8-10 cruiser. There was some very close racing in the 17-18 cruiser class between Aaron Wheatland and Todd Guyers. The last moto would be the decider after each rider took two wins each. Wheatland came out on top though for the win. Michael Wellman took a win in a tough 19-24 cruiser final. Aaron Lumsden had moved up an age bracket into the 25-29 cruiser class and took the overall win. In the 14+ Ladies cruiser Mardi Katakasi won from Prue Harvey and Louise Tye in second and third. Paul Tomkinson took out the 30-34 cruiser class. Brett MaliC gave Dean Coles a run for his money after getting tangled with Raymond Ross in the first corner, but in the end Coles was too far in front, MaliC finished second with Glenn Suridge in third. Chris Denys took the clean sweep of the 40-44 cruiser as did Karl Mustchin in the 30 and Over Masters cruiser.

On Sunday there were 21 riders in the pro womens class. Mankowski, Walker and Bailey dominated their motos and semis. Angela Wooding was taken away in an Ambulance after a bad crash in the second last straight during her semi, that allowed Kylie Patroni to slip through for a spot in the main. Sarah Walker took the final from start to finish with Tanya Bailey in chase in second place, Caroline Buchanan in third and Ziggy Callan in the four spot, I didn't what happened to Mankowski who finished back in eight.

AA Pro has 29 men in the field. There were some nasty crashes in the motos, Jamie Gray seemed to lose it in the second last corner and took a few riders down with him. Khalen Young crashed after the triple step up into the same corner in a seperate incident. Riders like Michael Fenwick, Scott Taylor, Billy Jolliffe and Michael Robinson were eliminated in the semi. In the main Luke Madill seemed to have the lead on the inside but was swamped in the step up leading into the first corner. Khalen Young was the only one to jump it and managed to put himself in to the lead. Jamie Gray kept it together for the second, and Luke Madill finished up with the three in front of Daniel Johnstone for four. Willers crashed in the last straight rhythm again. Kirkham, Graves and Sam Willoughby finished in 5th to 7th in that order.

Karl Mustchin took the 30+ Masters double winning the 20" class as well, Shane Jenkins took second and Peter Trenwith in third. Dean Coles also doubled in 30-34, as did Michael Wellman and Karlten Wolsey.

26/02 Kamakazi Misses Crash

BMX Australia press release
A Bradbury style finish allowed, National BMX Champion, Kamakazi, to win his first National Probikx Series race this season. Kamakazi was in fourth position when a crash involving the leading three riders gave him the green light to take the win. The crash involved leading rider, Khalen Young (Sydney) who was tangled up with Marc Willers from New Zealand. Following rider, Luke Madill was caught in the tangle. An earlier altercation for Jared Graves slowed his earlier lead but he recovered enough to ride across the line to claim second.

South Australian rider, Brian Kirkham (Port Augusta) placed third. Michael Robinson returned to racing after an appendix operation to claim fourth and fellow Queenslander, Jamie Gray (Browns Plains) was fifth. The victims of the crash, Madill, Young and Willers rode across the finished in sixth, seventh and eighth respectively.

In the National Probikx Series, the top three positions remained unchanged with Madill leading, Wade Bootes in second and Khalen Young.

The women’s race involved a series of three races for points and New Zealander, Sarah Walker finished with top points, Tanya Bailey(Perth) in second and Melissa Mankowki (Moranbah, QLD) in third. Serena Kastermans (New Zealand) was fourth with Adelaide rider, Angela wooding taking 7th and Perth rider Kylie Patroni in 8th. In the national Probikx Series, the women’s top three places nged with Bailey retaiing the lead with Mankowski in second and Nicole Callisto sidelined after knee surgery retaining her third spot.

The junior men’s event it was Matthew Willoughby won and stays in the series lead while Caroline Buchanan (Canberra) won from Ziggy Callan (Lilydale) but Callan retains the junior women’s lead.

In the 16 boys , South Australian, Sam Willoughby won and retains his National Champbikx . Western Australian, Lauren Reynolds (Bunbury) won the 16 girls race. There were another two Western Australian winners in the 15 boys and girls with Trent Evans and Kirsten Dellar. South Australian Tom Rowe won the 14 boys race on his home track. The Cross Keys track was officially opened on Saturday.

22/02 Review: S&M .38 Special cruiser

by Shane Jenkins/bmxultra.com
One of my favourite jobs here at bmxultra.com is reviewing products, what's now even better is we are planning on a regular bike review. S&M's .38 Special is the first of those. It comes as a frame, but has been built up for the review.

22/02 Sydney Olympic Park BMX Club

by Steve Humphreys, Vice President Downhill Western Sydney Mountain Bike Club, NSWMTB Chairman.
Sydney Olympic Park Authority (SOPA) has decided to build a BMX track at Homebush, it will be on the southern side of the Mtn X track using the same start hill. Designed by Brett Barnes and should be built in July this year. Problem is there will be a track without a club, all the Sydney Clubs are flat out running their own tracks Liverpool, Castle Hill, Windsor etc.

So we are testing the water for those persons who may be interested to form the Sydney Olympic Park BMX Club. SOPA wants Western Sydney Mountain Bike Club (WSMTB) to help so thats what I am doing. I know very little about BMX Clubs but I would see this as a very large opportunity to incorporate the Monster Skate Park into club activities, seeing this track will be called the Monster BMX Track or something like that.
Contact Steve at water.care@bigpond.com for more info.

21/02 What's new at ECI?

by bmxultra.com
One of Australia's biggest BMX distributors, Elite Cycle Imports (ECI), are in the middle of an Australia wide road show taking their lastest stock around the country for resellers. We caught up with them last night at the Melbourne leg of the tour at the ECI HQ at Lilydale.

They had a whole lot of new goodies on display including the 2007 Intense complete bikes, 2007 Kuwahara complete bikes. Also some interesting new products from THE including a new Knee/Shin guard and a euro style bike rack for those cars without a tow bar. The new Dirt Designs padsets. There were also the new Sinz heat treated cromo forks that will most likely be the latest fork craze here in Australia. They are just a couple of ounces heavier than carbon forks, but the good thing is they are so much cheaper that your wallet will be a whole lot heavier too.

20/02 WA Super Series Round 1: Westside BMX Club

by Matt Butterworth/bmxultra.com
The opening round of the 2007 WA Super Series kicked off with another opening of sorts – the grand opening of the Westside BMX Club new track and facilities. Over the Christmas break, the club had put in some MAJOR works in completely bulldozing the track, spectator area and start hill to come up with arguably the best track in Australia at the minute. Not only is the track sweet but many hours were spent on the aesthetics of the entire complex with landscaping, new grass and re-designed spectator areas to make it a very fan-friendly facility. The start hill was re-constructed and re-oriented to provide a slight downhill start to the first straight with the gate infrastructure from the 2003 World Championships dropped in permanently. From there it is a fast, technical, yet overall very flowy track that greeted the 395 total entries for the opening race of the 2007 WA season.

Brief showers caused some slight discomfort for fans and riders during practice but this cleared and by moto 1, it was blue skies and low wind for the rest of the afternoon. As it was a twilight race, the majority of the event was conducted out of the heat of the day (as is the case for the first three rounds of the series) and the new lights, when in full effect, provided fantastic coverage for riders, fans and photographers alike. Racing went very smoothly with few injuries to interrupt the flow of the motos and a great crowd was on had to witness some off the hook finals action.

AA Women kicked off the main events with a 3 main-main system for all A/AA classes. A-Pro rider Lauren Reynolds took a come-from-behind win overall after crashing heavily in main #2. She was followed home by BB Cycles Kylie Patroni who tied for points with younger sister Alyce (also out of BB Cycles). Kylie got the nod for the 2 spot on the podium with a second place in the 3rd main.

A-Men saw quite a few up and coming younger riders starting to make a name for themselves in the money ranks with 23 signed up. Of note was Andrew Brooks out of Wanneroo and Cameron Ainger from Southside. These two in particular have sprung on the A- pro scene with some strong riding out of 2 stacked semis to progress and fill the number 2 and 3 spots on the podium. Andrew Brooks had to do it the hard way with a couple of 7th in the qualifying heats to transfer out of the semis. There was no stopping Harley Clements out of Wanneroo who dominated all day only dropping one moto all day in an otherwise perfect win performance.

AA Men also had there fair share of high class racers in their 17 rider field. Cale McCulloch, Scotty Taylor and Ben Davis out of DK Australia were filling the top spots in each heat race and easily progressed to the mains. Special mention goes out to Brock Murray who is on a come back campaign after a couple of years off and filled one of the final spots in the main field after securing 4th in his semi. So its main event time and McCulloch and Taylor are tied for points going into main number 3 with Davis unable to make any head way in third. Scott Taylor leads from the green light and manages a little x-up on the last jump before the finish line to take the win. Cale McCulloch gets second and Ben Davis rounds out the podium.

Finally, on my first ride as a BMXULTRA.COM/ONE co-sponsored team member I had an outstanding start to the 2007 season, winning the Bruiser Cruiser main ahead of Trent Neimann (‘The He-Man’ according to race callers) and Robert Clarke. I also backed it up with a win in the 30+ Open 20” in a points-only affair after battling with Tony Keogh all day.

The south-west town of Collie is the destination for Round 2 on March 10th. With the track being one of the best in Australia for some years now, the racing should be mad and fast in all classes.

19/02 ABA Gator Nationals Oldsmar, Florida

Double A Marketing press release
Round 4 of the 2007 ABA Pro race events took place this past weekend Oldsmar, Florida. With all the other crazy race fans headed off to Daytona for some car race, the real race was going on for the BMX racers just outside of Tampa. Saturday had some great weather conditions for the racers, but Sunday was a totally different day with rain overnight and wind during the event on Sunday in Here is how the guys finished up:

Cristian Becerine has been the most consistent AA Pro for the past few months, and Oldsmar was another spectacular weekend for him. On Saturday, Cristian was riding well and just missed out on the AA Pro win with finishing 2nd overall and 1st in Pro Open. On Sunday, he stepped it with another big win in AA Pro. Cristian just missed out on doubling as he finished 2nd in Pro Open. Cristian's Sponsors include: Free Agent, Fly Racing, Sinz Racing Products, Kenda, THE Products, ODI, Sun Ringle, Shimano, Powerbar, Cyto Sport, OGIO, Oakley, Thomson Seat Posts, and BMXpros.com

Randy Stumpfhauser has been training hard for the past few months so he might now have been at his fastest at the last few races, but as you can see from history, Randy has been the most consistent Pro in BMX racing for the last 4 years. Oldsmar went very well for Randy as he would finish up 4th in AA Pro on Saturday and 2nd in AA on Sunday. Now that Randy looks to be at full speed mode for the rest of the season, all the other Pros better look out! Randy's sponsors include GT Bicycles, Kenda, ODI, Tangent, Sun Rims, Bombshell, Fly Racing, SINZ Products, Powerbar, CTI Knee Braces, OGIO, SDG, SRAM, Easton, Cyto Sport, and BMXpros.com.

Look for all the guys to be at next weekend NBL/UCI event in Boulder City, Nevada.

16/02 Modifying a Smart Start

by Shane Jenkins/bmxultra.com
I need some help modifying a Smart Start electronic gate start mechanism. They are usually set up for a mechanical system where it triggers a solenoid to release the gate. I have an electro magnet supplier interested in working on a project so the BSX will have an electro magnet release system which would be far safer, if an electro magnet fails it drops the gate, if a mechanical system fails the gate stays up and can get messy.

It was suggested that a relay would do the trick, does anyone know the best relay for the job, the best way to wire it, etc? Any advice would be awesome, email webmaster@bmxultra.com if you think you can help.

13/02 Race pants not dead

by bmxultra.com
With the relaxed new race clothing rules starting this year there have been a noticable number of riders taking advantage of the shorts and knee guards rule during the warmer months. It seems to have some concerned that race pants might be a thing of the past.

It's funny you know. In the US, in both NBL and ABA, gloves are optional. It doesn't mean that no one wears them, infact there is a much higher number of riders who do wear gloves, and with the fast clay straights and tar corners I am not surprised. Just because you don't have to wear gloves isn't going to stop you from falling off. Back when the NBA was running in Australia in the mid to late 80's we could race with t-shirts and elbow guards, which was fine during summer, but during the colder months people covered up. When you fell with elbow guards they tended to move a little and there was still a lot of skin exposed.

The same thing will happen in Australia with the shorts and kneeguards, people will cover up as it gets cooler or have to put up with grazes on exposed areas and the novelty wears off.

These rule changes may actually result in an increase in sales of race pants. Particularly those with zip off legs, like the Answer Edge or Redline race pants. The legs could come off for the warmer part of the year and go back on when it cools down. People just have more freedom and more options now.

12/02 Mike Miller

by Angie Miller
My husband, Michael Miller won the Grands in 1988 in Oklahoma and appeared in many issues of BMX Action Magazine. Since his move from Arizona to Illinois, all of his magazines, articles, videos, etc. have been lost. Fortunately he has managed to hold on to a few of his trophies from over the years. I would really love to get a hold of anything with him in it, it would be a nice surprise. We are expecting our first child in April and I'm sure she would like to see these things when she gets older too. I know he was in the July 1998 issue of BMX Action Magazine as one the of 12 Arizona Hot Shoes. You can e-mail me at millerdecorating@yahoo.com

P.S. Mikes dad, George Miller, was
from Color Control and C.C. Rider. Mike was on Elf and Skyway too.

12/02 What's up with the SA state titles?

by Shane Jenkins
I have a real problem with the way South Australia are running their State Championships. The format of the 5 day "open" title event seems to be set up to cater for the local riders more than the riders who travel from interstate.

I made the decision to race at the South Australian titles instead of the ACT titles the following week. Despite the fact that the ACT titles was, and still is, my favourite race meeting run in Australia. The one thing that made be choose the SA titles was the 30 & Over money classes. Leading up to the nationals I wanted to race against the best guys in that category to see what sort of work I would need to do in the following months to be in the title chase.

The problem is practice and registration are both on the Friday, according to the programme, and I have to work on the Friday, meaning I won't make it in to town until the middle of the night some time. Is it just me that's effected? Actually no it's not. For one, I am travelling with another rider and I know of South Australian riders from more remote parts of the state that didn't even enter because of the way the event is structured. Additional time and costs just make it too difficult.

I congratulate the way that South Australia are trying to make something different of their event, but come on, racing is racing and there aren't so many riders that you can't run all of the practice and racing on the Saturday and Sunday. All other states seem to cope just fine, look at ACT for example, their meeting will have around 600-700 entries (going by past years) they fit it all in two days, but if you get their on Friday you get some additional practice..

Even a small window of time for registration on Saturday for the late stragglers and maybe a minimum of a quick sighting lap around the track between the ChampBikx/ProBikx finals and the start of the SA titles. Maybe it's just me but I would have thought to fit everything in in a two day format would only make it a bigger and better race meeting. The SA titles certainly have the potential.

[Editor: I have received correspondance from event organisers about this, later in the information flyer for the event it states that there is also registration from 9am to 11am on the Saturday. There is also potential for riders arriving on Saturday for an out of schedule practice session. For enquiries contact Kim Braybon on 0408 097 403.]

12/02 Khalen keen on Olympic BMX

BMXAustralia press release
BMX rider, Khalen Young has added his name to the selectors list for Beijing Olympics when he won round 5 of the National Series event in Liverpool, Sydney today.

The 22 year old commonly known as the “wild child” of BMX makes this win his first in three years. Since retiring from BMX in 2004, Young has changed his life around to focus on his Olympic dream.

“We all set goals at the beginning of this year,” he said. Young took the win in his stride. “I knew it was just a matter of time and I’d get to this stage.”

Young was challenged in the final by Penrith’s Luke Madill. Madill made a late charge missing out on the finish line by a half a wheel. Madill’s second place was enough to secured him the lead position in the National Series with Young now in third place on points.

Wade Bootes finished an unlucky seventh and has moved into second place in the series. Eyes were on mountain bike rider, Jared Graves from Toowoomba who placed fourth.

BMX High Performance Coach, Sean Dwight was impressed with the standard of racing. “This track certainly showed me which riders have done the work. It’s a fast track with big jumps and it takes a lot more work. Khalen’s done the work, he is totally focused.”

Western Australian rider, Tanya Bailey dominated the elite women’s field winning ahead of Queenslander, Melissa Mankowski. Fellow Western Australian rider, Nicole Callisto placed third. In the Probikx National Series, Bailey holds onto the lead with Mankowski and Callisto in second and third respectively.

After crashing during racing in Melbourne last month, Callisto returns for knee surgery in three days times. Callisto underwent major knee reconstruction at the same time last year which adelaide saw her sidelined for the season. “I’ll have to spend six weeks off the bike after this so it’s better if it’s done now. Then I can focus on the World Championships,” she said.

09/02 bmxultra.com team update

bmxultra.com press release
Most of the bmxultra.com crew had a busy start to the year with the Track Attack series and BSX2007 keeping them busy.

Many of the bmxultra.com crew helped with preparation of the track, our AA Pro Levi Collins built the gate and co-sponsored riders Adam Carey, Scooby Guyers and Jamie Bullows helped around the track. Thanks guys.

Levi Collins (Vic, AUS) was unable to make a AA main at the Track Attack series. The AA field was stacked full of Australia best and a few international riders as well. He did manage to finish 10th overall. When the BSX came around however it was a different story. Levi looked right at home posting the 6th fastest time of the 34 pro open riders. He was eliminated however by Luke Madill in the quarter final. Luke went on to win the event. Levi will be taking a break over the coming month.

Shane Jenkins (Vic, AUS) was only able to compete at a few of the Track Attack rounds in vet pro. Having finished up the three rounds with a 5th, 7th and a 3rd you can be sure that Shane will be looking to improve in the lead up to the Australian Championships. At the BSX Shane posted the third fastest time in the 30 & Over open wheel class and finished second overall to Simon Anderson. If you have seen the January edition of XBR you may have noticed that a photo of Shane was used to promote One Bicycles in the Elite Cycle Imports ad.

Jason Bergstrom (TN, USA), our only US rider, has been resting up in preparation for 2007.

Co-sponsored riders

Adam Carey (Vic, AUS) also struggled a little in the tough AA field at Track Attack. He did manage to finish 9th overall for the series. At BSX he posted the 20th fastest time in the pro open class, he was eliminated by Jamie Gray in the first round.

Scooby Guyers (SA, AUS) made his first outing in the A pro field at the Track Attack, he didn't make a main, but finished 24th from the 50 riders who competed. At the BSX he posted the 24th fastest time in the pro open class and was eliminated by John Callan in the first round.

Jamie Bullows (Vic, AUS) had a good week at the Track Attack series, only racing at a couple of rounds he finished with a 3rd, 4th and a 5th in bruiser cruiser. He also finished with a 6th in vet pro when he busted out the dirt jumper at Frankston for some fun. At the BSX Jamie qualified with the fifth fastest time in the 30 & Over open wheel class, but was eliminated by the super smooth Simon Anderson in the first round.

Brandan Bullows (Vic, AUS) has been resting up and didn't compete at the Track Attack series this year.

Brett MaliC (SA, AUS) and his good mate Wolfman toured the Adelaide cafe scene for the Track Attack week.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Western Australia's Matt Butterworth (WA, AUS) to the team. Matt finished second at the Cairns Australian Championships in the 30-34 Mens class a couple of years back, you will hear a lot more of him after the birth of his second child expect next month.

The next major stop for the bmxultra.com team is the South Australian state championships at the end of the month.

The bmxultra.com team is proudly supported by One Bicycles, Supercross BMX, Answer BMX, Dirt Designs, ATi grips, and Tektro brakes.

07/02 Toowoomba Open day report

Toowoomba BMX Club press release
The Toowoomba BMX Club would like to thank all who attended the recent Clive Berghofer / Toowoomba BMX Club Open day. The weather gods were kind for once, no rain (what’s that stuff….???), just a bit of a breeze that died off towards the finals.

A Huge Thanks to ALL those hard working Officials and Volunteers… without you guys, … no event, so thanks heaps on behalf of the club, and all riders.

The Toowoomba Club had some pretty huge bucks up for grabs, and these dollars have to come from somewhere. SPONSORS…, without the continue support from our sponsors there would be no event, of any kind in Toowoomba, so a very heartfelt Thankyou; Toowoomba City Council / & Dept. Youth Development (Sprocket Sponsors), Industrial Galvanizers, Bikeline, Sedl Earthmoving, Staats Bicycles (Staats 10s) and all other Minor Sponsors (will list all soon), and last but definitely not least, Mr Clive Berghofer / Clive Berghofer Group, the event’s naming rights sponsor. No Clive… No Event.

The AA final saw great racing action. Last years (2006) winner day one was Bootes, with Graves in second. Day two was Gray first with Graves second. It seems Jared has honed his BMX skills of late and was not content to settle for another second place this year. I would hate to be a selector trying to choose an Olympics team. That is going to be one tough job, given Aust has so many highend BMXers. You could nearly enter 4 Aussie teams, and they would probably all have an equal chance at Olympic level.

Racing across all other classes was hot with the lure of big bucks at the end of the rainbow. The Toowoomba Club hope to offer similar bucks in 2008, heck, we may even double everything again, being the first BMX Olympics year.

07/02 ABA Sooner Nationals Guthrie

Double A Marketing press release
Round 3 of the 2007 ABA Pro race events took place this past weekend in Guthrie, Oklahoma at the Lazy E Arena. While the arena is better known for some big time Pro Rodeos, it seemed like instead of a Pro BMX race, there was a Rodeo going on this weekend as a slew of riders took big time tumbles and crashes. The ABA build a great track for the riders and there was some great race action all weekend long. The Double A Marketing riders were there in full force and had some impressive results. Here is how the guys finished up:

Cristian Becerine was once again one of the top Pros at the event. Focusing on AA Pro, Cristian had a impressive showing as usual throughout the day on Saturday, but once the main events started, he really shinned. Cristian would take another home another AA win with his impressive power and skills. On Sunday, Cristian looked to repeat his increasable performance from the day before, but fell just a bit short, finishing 3rd. Cristian has been one of the top guys for 2007 and looks to continue his wining ways all season long. Cristian's Sponsors include: Free Agent, Answer, Kenda, THE Products, ODI, Sun Ringle, Shimano, Powerbar, Cyto Sport, OGIO, Oakley, Thomson Seat Posts, and BMXpros.com

Randy Stumpfhauser has also focused on AA only and has also been very impressive so far in 2007. While Randy has been atop the Pro class most of the season, this weekend he was off just a bit. Randy was in the AA main event both days, but finished up 8th both days. Still a tough feat to make the AA main, Randy was not happy with his results and will be ready to battle for the win in a few weeks at the next ABA National event in Florida. Randy's sponsors include GT Bicycles, Kenda, ODI, Tangent, Sun Rims, Bombshell, Fly Racing, SINZ Products, Powerbar, CTI Knee Braces, OGIO, SDG, SRAM, Easton, Cyto Sport, and BMXpros.com.

Brandon Meadows gave his fans something to cheer about as he made the Pro Open main event on Sunday. Brandon looked better and better on the track as the weekend progressed, and in the main event on Sunday afternoon, Brandon just missed making a appearance on the Podium, as he would finish up 4th overall. Brandon looks forward to his next event to get a shot at the Elite Pro win. Brandon's Sponsors include Intense BMX, Socko Energy Drinks, SINZ Racing, THE Products, Fly Racing, Shimano, Power Bar, Intense Tire Systems, Cyto Sport, OGIO, Thomson Seat Posts, and BMXpros.com

Joey Bradford made the trip to Oklahoma and just kept finding problems along the way. On Friday, upon arrival, his luggage didn't make it there with him, so he missed out on practice on Friday. Things took a turn for the better on Saturday, as he easily made it to the A Pro main event. Joey finished up 3rd overall. On Sunday, it was back to tough time, as after wining the 1st of the 3 main events and placing 2nd in the 2nd round, a crash would keep Joey from taking home the win and even a spot on the podium, as he finished up 4th overall. Joey’s sponsors include GT Bicycles, Fly Racing, Oakley, Bombshell, THE Products, Sun Ringle, Kenda, SDG, FSA, Sponsorhouse, ODI, Powerbar, Cyto Sport, Circle E, SRAM, Avid, OGIO, Sirius, joeybradford.com, and BMXpros.com

Kyle Bennett was in attendance and rode the track during the Friday practice. Kyle has had a quick recovery from his knee reconstructive surgery he had in December and looks to be back in the AA mix soon. Kyle is looking at the NBL national event in Boulder City, NV to hopefully be his return to the BMX National Tour. Kyle's sponsors include Free Agent, KHS, Fly Racing, Bombshell F1 Fork, Sun Rims, Shimano, UGP, Kenda, Thomson, S & M bars, ODI, ORP, Powerbar, Cyto Sport, and BMXpros.com.

Double A Marketing proudly represents Cristian Becerine, Kyle Bennett, Joey Bradford, Dale Holmes, Brandon Meadows, and Randy Stumpfhauser. Look for new riders to be added on for 2007. For more information on any of the riders or on Double A Marketing, please visit BMXPros.com

06/02 Battery BSX2007: The fundraiser part 2

by Shane Jenkins/bmxultra.com
It's easy to forget some people since so many helped to make BSX2007 happen. Thanks to Andrew Nolen, Sean Dwight and BMX Australia for helping us make it possible to have the Australian High Performance Team in attendance. BMX Australia also waived any fees required to make it possible. The Eastern Region (the guys who run Track Attack) also helped a lot behind the scenes, any unlicenced riders had their day licences payed by Eastern Region. The Knox BMX club had also donated $210 from money they collected from gate practice sessions, they also donatated their left over BBQ food from the race the day before which was a lot of meat, eggs and bread.

After the racing is over the competition starts to heat up in the auctions. The number plate auction is one of the hotest contested, especially when it comes to the #1 plate, the guy who pulls the fastest time on the track. Last year Luke Madill won the #1 and $200 cash that went to the fastest time. Suspiciously the number plate sold for $200.

Here's how the top 10 number plates went this year, sorry I haven't sorted them.

Name $
Michael Robinson 70
Luke Madill 65
Daniel Johnstone 40
Jamie Gray 33
Levi Collins 40
Tom Siinmaa 20
Luke Pretlove 25
Shannon Rademaker 50
Simon Anderson 50
Shane Jenkins 21

We also had a few signed jerseys going to the highest bidders. The Bubba Harris race worn and signed jersey sold for $300 and the DK jersey signed by the Australian DK team went for $240. The Kuwahara Jersey signed by Warwick Steveson and Matt Pohlkamp and Tony Harvey's signed Avent jersey also pulled good money.

Some of the hottest contested silent auction items were the 2 Joe Kid on a Stingray DVD's that were signed by Scot "The OM of BMX" Breithaupt, the late auction item that was brought up on the day by BMXMAD an Answer ACF carbon helmet, and the cartons of Beer.

05/02 Battery BSX2007: The fundraiser

by Shane Jenkins/bmxultra.com
One thing about BSX is that most people within the BMX fraternity know it's a one-on-one BMX race. It's easy to forget it's primarily a fundraising event for the Royal Children's Hospital. We have winners and losers in the race on the day, that's the main event that attracts the spectators, the fans of some of the world's best BMXers. When the dust settles it's the Children's Hospital that's the winner. Although having said that you can nearly guarantee that Luke Madill will be on top of the podium, having now won it two years in a row.

It's not only the Royal Children's Hospital who benefit though, it's also the Kinglake West community. The local Country Fire Authority branch cater for BSX, all of the money they raise goes back to maintenance and purchasing new equipment.

To raise money we had to spend money, we also needed the help from our fantastic partners who supplied product for auctions, raffles, door prizes, etc. Without the help of our partners rasping a significant amount of money would be very difficult. It's time to thank those who helped make BSX2007 a success.

Platinum partner

Our naming rights partner, Battery, supplied cartons of beer which were auctioned off and collected after the event, a Fender electric guitar which was also auctioned off and many cans of Battery Energy drink which were sold cold and the excess were given away.

Gold partners

The insurance for BSX2006 cost $1400 for the day and we still managed to make a profit of just over $3200. All of which was presented to the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation. For BSX2007 Gavin D of XBR stepped in and covered the insurance for the event, allowing us to dramatically decrease the expense and maximise the money we could potentially raise for the charity. Not only that XBR helped promote the event in the months leading up to BSX2007 and had photos printed of each of the riders to be auctioned off when the racing had finished. If you grab the January 2007 edition of XBR you will see a two page spread of photos and words from the day.

ManageSoft have been very supportive since our first BSX, not only providing a significant donation to the Children's Hospital but supplying people to help with the running of the event. It doesn't stop there though, ManageSoft have other internal fundraising plans for the Children's Hospital.

Dirt Designs once again supplied the t-shirts and number plates for the BSX, not only are they a major contributor but also partially responsible for the BSX concept.

Silver partners

DK Bicycles joined us as a partner for the first time at BSX2007 their kind contribution far exceeded that expected of a silver partner. The many DK parts that were raffled off were well received.

FreeAgent Australia had donated an entry level race bike, an Eluder, and a helmet of which I am proud to say a Kinglake local won. We used the bike as a draw card for the local community through a voucher drop at the local primary schools.

Elite Cycle Imports supplied Intense (ITS) tires and THE grips and a bike stand which were very popular items on the day.

One Bicycles supplied everything from sticker packs to jerseys to number plates and more allowing us to add a lot of value with consolation prizes to each of the raffles. The jerseys were auctioned off.

Safe and Sound Production Services did a fantastic job on the day supplying the music, PA and scaffolding for the video crew. They have been a great supporter of BSX and BMX in general.

Bronze Partners

All of our bronze partners including Alpine Timber Doors and Windows, Bayswater Cycles, BMXMAD, DMC outsourcing, Fox Racing by Monza Imports, Goldcross Cycles Chirnside Park, Mud Honey MX, Redline USA, Scot Breithaupt and Splash Creative made contributions that allowed us to make a lot of extra money through auctions and raffles.

I personally would like to thank everyone who contributed either as a partner, a volunteer, a competitor, a spectator, or even if it was just watching on the webcam on the day. A special thanks to XBR, BMXPress and the Leader Newspaper for attending. Our total profit should tip well over the $6000 mark when the fundraising activities are finished. We are hoping that the local council revoke a Planning Infringement fine of $500 to help us keep the total contribution above the $6000 mark.

We will announce the final amount contributed to the hospital when it's available.

Work has already started on BSX2008, keep your eyes peeled.

05/02 J&R Bicycles Puerto Rico Report

J&R Bicycles press release
For the second year in a row J&R bicycles made a showing at the NBL National in Barceloneta, Puerto Rico. This time around J&R President Kirk Morrison brought down Rookie sensation Mike Kappes. Last year Jason Bennet who was also a rookie A pro made the trip, however Bennet is currently in Africa shooting for a reality tv show and couldn’t make the trip. Kappes knew he had some big shoes to fill as last year Bennet won both days of racing from start to finish. Not one to back down from a challenge Kappes came to Puerto Rico ready to do battle with the rest of the Super X riders. On day 1 Kappes took care of business in all rounds and took the win with a pretty nice lead. As the racing got underway on day 2 Kappes was already ahead in the payout department winning $400 at the Black Jack tables the night before. Wanting to add even more money to his Black Jack winnings Kappes focused his efforts on the track and not on the dancing girls at the top of the starting hill. Kappes lead practically every lap on day 2 and when the racing was done he was once again the over all winner in the Super X class.

Kappes Kills it in Puerto Rico

Day 1 Racing Rounds 2 & 3
Kappes comes out with a great snap and hole shot into turn 1. Owens tucks in behind Kappes down the second straight and stays on Kappes. Over the pro section and down the last straight Kappes still has to lead and takes the win with Owens in 2nd.

Kappes gets snapped out by Ronald Vega but puts down some ponies down the first straight and takes the lead. Down the second straight Kappes still has good lead and Owens tucks in for 2nd.

Kirk Morrison serves the Puerto Rico Riders

As with last year Kirk Morrison brought 3 full large bags of product to sell to the Puerto Rican riders. All three bags were over weight and Kirk had to fork out $80 to the airline just so they would accept his bags. Not even an hour into the trip and Kirk was already down a few bucks. Knowing that there are very few bike shops in Puerto Rico that carry BMX products he figured he would be able to cover this $80 deficit. Not to mention a few hours at the black jack and poker tables would hopefully be profitable. Wanting to help out the local racers by bringing down what every racer needs tubes, tires, helmets, gears, etc. he wasn’t to worried about making a profit. As long as the trip paid for itself it was all good. The very first customer for the Miniature J&R vending area was Mr. Robbie Miranda. The sale was small, just an inner tube. However Kirk already felt like he helped out a fellow BMXer by having what that rider needed to be able to enjoy the excellent track. Where else was Robbie going to get an inner tube in Barceloneta. Many racers stopped by to check out the goods that Kirk had and a few people picked up some much needed parts. Even after Uncle Bob picked up the vending few on the 27 moto race Kirk still felt as though the trip was worth it just to help out the racers.

It's a WRAP

All in all the race was lots of fun and the J&R crew had a great time. Kirk Morrison said that the NBL Puerto Rico national is the Best little race that no one knows about. J&R would like to thank Carlos Diaz, Angel Perez, Pucho, and the rest of the Puerto Rican riders/organizers for putting on such a fun event.
Mike Kappes would like to thank the Puerto Rican casino companies for allowing him to win some money. He would also like to thank the rest of the Super X class for showing up and making for some great racing action.

02/02 bmxultra.com Hall of Fame

by bmxultra.com
We have our first 4 inductees to the bmxultra.com Hall of Fame as nominated by you and voted on by some of the old school crowd and some of the most influential people in the sport today. After a postponement of the original presentation during the Track Attack series we had decided to take the Hall of Fame in house and run it at BSX2007. The only problem with that was the damp weather sent our schedule haywire so in the rush to get the event finished early we made the difficult decision to bump the bmxultra.com Hall of Fame presentation once again.

Now that we are able to focus on the Hall of Fame we will be calling each of the inductees to see if we can get them all at the same place at the same time and make a formal presentation of it.

A slight reorganization of the bmxultra.com website over the coming months will see a new section of the site dedicated to the Hall of Fame so we can fully recognize those individuals who were instrumental in shaping the sport of BMX racing in Australia.
