The Australian Championships will be contested this weekend at
the Lake Macquarie BMX Track, a pre-existing track, as opposed
to the indoor track in Adelaide that was used last year.
There has been much discussion about whether the Australian Championships should be indoor or outdoor, on a purpose built track or an established track. There are many arguments that go either way. I can understand that people spend a lot of money on entry fees, travel, accommodation, food, etc so would prefer to be indoors for the nationals in the case of rain. However the Australian Championships of the 80's and 90's is rich with what was nearly a tradition of a rain day, and racing went on as usual.
The stand out argument is that people feel we should hold the Australian Championships on a purpose built track so there is no home track advantage. That doesn't sit well with me, it never did. Sure a local rider can get more track time than those who travel for just one meeting, and they might even be able to improve their chances marginly. All riders are different, some adjust to tracks quickly, some don't, some prefer faster tracks with rolling jumps, others might prefer shorter straights with lippy jumps, and all then you have all the other variants. The point I am trying to make is that a certain type of track layout will suit a certain type of rider, and it's quite obvious that luck can play it's part, as it often does.
The real question should be is a purpose built indoor track worth it when you consider all the associated costs, like venue hire, dirt hire, equipment hire, labour and so on. Who benefits then? The people who are pleased there is no home track advantage? What about sustainability? Can our sport support such great expense while clubs struggle throughout the country? It would be nice to see a host track benefit from hosting Australia's single biggest race meeting for the year. For many people the Australian Championships hosted in Cairns have been the favourite of recent times. Doesn't that say something about the benefit of using an outdoor track? Can't the schedule for the Australian Championships be modified to include a rain day as an extra day in the case that it does rain too heavily to race? Surely since we race in all weather conditions outdoor week in week out shouldn't our national championships event also be run that way?

Round 7 of the 2007 NBL Elite Series took place this weekend on
the East Coast in Woodbridge, VA. One of the most liked tracks
on the NBL Elite tour, Woodbridge is a very technical track, that
is fast and flows very well. A recent rebuild has made the track
better than ever and had the Pros raving about it all weekend.
With just 1 US round of UCI points left after Woodbridge, Saturday
would be an important day for the North American ranking system
for the pros. Here is how the BMXpros.com guys finished up:
Kyle Bennett has made a very quick return to
top speed in the Elite class after his knee surgery as once again
he was very impressive this weekend, at just his 2nd race back.
On Day 1 Kyle had a great result, as he finished 2nd in Elite
Men's main event. On Sunday, Kyle backed that up with another
2nd place finish and another great result. Kyle's sponsors include
Free Agent, KHS, Fly Racing, Bombshell, www.bmxtraining.com, Sun
Rims, Shimano, UGP, Kenda, Thomson, S & M bars, ODI, ORP,
Powerbar, Cyto Sport, and BMXpros.com.
Brandon Meadows has been going fast this year
and Woodbridge was no exception. On Saturday, Brandon was in the
Elite Open main event and 7th was the outcome. Saturday after
the race, Brandon and his teammate Danny Caluag put on a clinic
for the local riders and they all had a blast, giving advise and
prizes from Socko Energy, Shimano, Fly Racing, and of course Intense
BMX, THE, and SINZ. On Sunday, Brandon was ready to race and he
did just that with a 4th in the Elite Men's main event. Brandon's
Sponsors include Intense BMX, Socko Energy Drinks, SINZ Racing,
THE Products, Fly Racing, Shimano, Power Bar, Intense Tire Systems,
Cyto Sport, OGIO, Thomson Seat Posts, and BMXpros.com
Cristian Becerine has had an incredible 2007
season so far and with the lead in the NBL points, he is looking
to win his first US Pro title. On Saturday, Cristian finished
6th in the Elite Men's main event. On Sunday, Cristian missed
out on the main event. Cristian's Sponsors include: Free Agent,
Answer, Kenda, THE Products, ODI, Sun Ringle, Shimano, Powerbar,
Cyto Sport, OGIO, Oakley, Thomson Seat Posts, and BMXpros.com
Joey Bradford made his return from his tail bone
injury and he wasn't just relaxing while away, he was still on
his training schedule. On Saturday, Joey once again was unstoppable,
with another huge win in Junior Elite at the UCI/NBL event. On
Sunday, Joey was at home once again in the winners circle, keeping
his winning streak going with another win in Junior Elite.. Joey
is unbeaten this season at the NBL Junior Elite events. Joey’s
sponsors include GT Bicycles, Fly Racing, Oakley, Bombshell, THE
Products, Sun Ringle, Kenda, SDG, FSA, Sponsorhouse, ODI, Powerbar,
Cyto Sport, Circle E, SRAM, Kore, OGIO, Sirius, Pearl Izumi, joeybradford.com,

The Warragul BMX track has an appeal like no other track
I know of, but I didn't realise just how much the legend had grown
until Sunday. When Warragul hosted round 2 of the Metro Plate
regional series there were 169 riders and 195 entries, making
it the biggest race meeting in Victoria this year aside from the
Track Attack series. I am told that it's also the biggest race
meeting ever held at Warragul over the many years of it's existance.
That said heavy rain falls the night before might have kept some
extras away, fortunatly there were blue skies and sun right through
to the last of the finals and the track started off ok and just
got better as the racing went on.
While the track may not challenge those riders with strong jumping skills, it required a lot of strength to get to the first corner with the nose in front and tested the cornering skills of some of Victoria's best riders.
The old school theme worked well on the day with a number of side hack challenges thrown down during the lunch break, bmxultra.com's Hall of Fame presentation, and of course the flat pedal challenge in the money classes. A couple of the older guys even dragged some old school rides out for some fun racing.
There were 12 riders in the 14 & Over money class, enough for two full gates on the six lane starting gate. The flanelette crew of Jhy Denholm, Aaron Gedye, Andrew Howieson and Matt Dunsworth were out in force. As were the SE riders of Jon Jon Hoare and Connor Hunter, local Tom Siinmaa, regulars Danny Galea and Shane Jenkins, and Josh Isaac, Daniel Kozulins and Tyrone Walsh rounded out the field. When the dust settled it was Galea, Hoare, Siinmaa, Hunter, Jenkins and Denholm in that qualifying order. It was no surprise that they were also the lane choices with there being quite an advantage to have the inside running for the first straight and first corner. In the main Galea got a good start but Hoare managed to get his nose infront and squeeze Galea back, Hunter tried to get past Galea on the outside of the first corner and Siinmaa was going for the inside. Jenkins and Denholm on their tails also looking for a way through. Siinmaa got ahead of Hunter narrowly but Hunter was on the inside, aserting some authority, he came out of the corner ahead of Siinmaa. Denholm went into the second corner too hot and didn't make the turn. Jenkins saw that Siinmaa has lost momentum and made a move on the third straight. With Hoare out in front by a narrow margin over Galea and Hunter hot on their heals, Siinmaa tried to get back into fourth with the foot off and turning hard under Jenkins in turn three, but couldn't pull it off. Hunter tried to pull under Galea in the last corner but couldn't make it stick. Hoare taking line honours.

ONE KENDA press release
Round 1 and 2 of the European Championship for Junior/Elite
Men and Women were held in Habay La Neuve, Belgium. Not much to
say anymore, let’s say the Belgian track had a lot of people
talking already.
Magalie Pottier from France was back from her injury.
Round 1
It seemed nothing bothered Magalie Pottier.
Although she was still recovering she was able to win Junior Women. Joyce Seesing from Holland made it 3rd place in her first year in Junior Women.
In Junior Men Toms Skujins from Latvia was battling to make it to the main. In his first year in Junior Men he wasn’t able to make the main on day 1.
In Elite Women, Blandine Cottereau from France and Aneta Hladikova from Czech Republic had to compete with more then just European competitors. Sarah Wlaker from New Zealand and Samatha Cools from Canada made the trip to Belgium.
Aneta Hladikova made it to the main but had top brake hard to prevent a crash on the 2nd jump.
She managed to move up to 6th place.
Everybody was looking forward to Elite Men class. Top 10 is very competitive.
Arturs Matisons and Maris Strombergs, both from Latvia, have been doing great in the US and were looking forward doing the same in Belgium.
Emilio Falla from Ecuador made the trip to Europe in order to stay at the UCI trainingcenter in Aigle, Switzerland, for a few months. Emilio just came back from an injury that kept him away from the Supercross in Madrid the week before. IN the 2nd moto Emilio crahed hard and hurt his wrist again, and the doctor didn’t allowe him to race the next day.
Maris and Arturs were flying all day.
Maris Strombergs managed to make it into the main event and Arturs Matisons also flew his ONE colors to main event.
The main event was an awesome one. Everyone needs to check out the video on SCHIJFBMX later this week.
Maris unclipped and finished 8th, Arturs Matisons got 2nd place, but had to let Michal Prokop pass him before he crossed the finish line.
Round 2
Magalie Pottier again was fast. The slippery turns, due
to the “beach sand” on the track, made her slide away
and crash in the semi.
Joyce had to keep the ONE/Kenda colors high.
Joyce took 3rd and is now 3rd overall. Magalie is in 4th ready to take revenge at the next rounds in Czech Republic.
Toms Skujins made it to the main. He was looking fast all day competing in the motos with the points leader Yvan Lapraz from Switzerland.
Toms took 4th and is now 6th overall.
In Elite Women Blandine Cottereau and Aneta Hladikova made it both to the main.
Blandine got 3rd and Aneta 4th. Blandine is 5th now overall followed by Aneta in 6th.
Elite Men, last race of the weekend.
Only Arturs Matisons made it to the main. It seemed a copy of day 1, with a 3rd place again for Arturs.
Arturs is now in 3rd overall, Maris in 6th.
Next stop, round 3 and 4 in Czech Republic

BMX Australia press release
A broken hand could not stand in the way of Australia’s
leading BMX rider, Luke Madill from taking back to back wins in
Mackay over the weekend. The 26 year old from Penrith won bouth
rounds 8 and 9 of the Probikx National Series. Madill won the
first time trial on Saturday before going on to win the final
race. On Sunday he injured his hand in the time trial but was
able to come back in the final race to take out the ninth round.
Madill made the trek up to North Queensland even though he returned from racing overseas just four days earlier. “This weekend’s helped me a lot,” claimed Madill after looking at the overall points he gains from winning both rounds.
“Today was little bit harder than yesterday,” admitted Madill. “In the time trial I came up a bit short in one of sections of the pro bit and hurt my thumb,” he said. “Yesterday everything was working well,” said Madill, “but today I just had a few more niggling problems during the racing but I had a clean lap in the final so it went well.”
Madill can feel confident now going into the National Championships which also holds the final two rounds of the National Series. “I’m definitely going fast this year. Wade and Tiger are always up there and they can do well whenever. It’s good to know I’m still quick enough to lead finals,” said Madill.
Madill now has 740 points with Gold Coast’s Wade Bootes gaining valuable gains with two second places giving him a total of 655 points.
Madill now looks confident to take out the overall national series if he can stay ahead of Bootes or the fast start of Jared Graves who are currently in second and third respectively. After placing third on both days, Brisbane’s Michael “Tiger” Robinson now moves into 4th place.
There was an upset in the Junior Women’s overall placings as Ziggy Callan (Lilydale, VIC) won both rounds. However second placegetter. Caroline Buchanan from Canberra gained enough points to now take the lead in the series lead by just 20 points.
Adelaide’s Matthew Willoughby stays in the series lead with a convincing lead with 823 points in the Junior Men’s series ahead of Gold Coast’s Stevie Janssen on 703 points. The leaders remains unchanged but the big mover up the series ladder was Dirk Winter from the Sunshine Coast. After winning the both rounds in Mackay, Winter now moves into fourth place.
Many of the Elite Women’s field remained at home in Sydney leaving the door open for Bundaberg’s Tanya Thiele to win both rounds and gain valuable points to move up into 5th place. However, Perth’s Tanya Bailey retains the lead with enough points while Moranbah’s Melissa Mankowski still in second on the series ranking.
Mackay riders showed great form in both the boys and girls 14 Champbikx division. Melinda McLeod won both days which now moves her into the lead with 615 points while Nerang’s Lacey Oliver gets relegated to second. Walkerston riders, Elise Davey and Dannielle Bradford placed third and fourth respectively on the both days.
Adam Shields from Mackay also flew the flag in the 14 boys Champbikx round by winning both days beating the current series leader Graeme Mudd from New South Wales. Shields however could feel confident to turn the tables in the final two rounds in 2 weeks time with only 41 pointsneeded to pass Mudd’s 560 points.
South Australia’s Talia Smith won the two rounds in the 15 Champbikx rounds with Ashley Wyatt from Mackay gaining second spot over both days. Smith moves into second in the series while Wyatt moves up into fourth place.
Adam Sanderson from Lake Macquarie dominated the 15 boys division to take the win on both days. Glandular fever put the current series leader, Brendon Abel, off his bike on the Sunday but Abel still manages to lead the series with 629 points. Benjamin Clark from Macarthur placed third and second over the two rounds and is narrowly holding second place with 507 points just one points in front of Sanderson. With Sanderson’s current form he may be able to take out the series when the next two rounds are held on his home track at Lake Macquarie as part of the National Championships in two week’s time. Mackay’s Ryan Faux showed a return to form by taking second on Saturday but was unlucky to finish in fourth place on Sunday.
The Western Australian pair of Lauren Reynolds (Bunbury) and Cherie Simpson (Byford) dominated the 16 girls racing with Reynolds winning over both days. Simpson was outclassed by Townsville's Rachel Bracken on Saturday for second place but the placings were switched on Sunday with Simpson taking second. Overall Reynolds now leads with 620 points while Simpson trails on 543 and Bracken on 504 points.
Adelaide’s Sam Willoughby and Victoria’s Joshua Callan secured the top placings with Willoughby winning on Saturday. Callan took out the Sunday round after clashing with Willoughby on the final bend. Kurt Nicholls from Cairns placed fourth and third over the two days but gained enough points to move up into fifth place in the National Series.
Riders now return to training before heading to the National Championships in Lake Macquarie in just two weeks time. The final two rounds of the National Probikx and Champbikx will also be held at the Championships to decide the National Series overall winners.

Round
4 of the 2007 Super Series was held last weekend at the Southside
BMX Club. This was the first time in a few years that the Southside
club have held a race of this calibre, but you wouldn't know it.
The way in which the track and it's surroundings were presented
was great. Lots of food and drink stalls, everything was close,
and the track was in great condition... That is, until the rain
came down.
Upon arrival in the morning, riders were greeted with overcast weather, perfect for racing. Practice went off without a hitch, with most of the older riders quickly finding that some of the jumps were a little short for the speed that they were hitting them. It was just another challenge though, and on the whole the track flowed really well. A number of riders elected to give this race a miss due to how close it is to the Nationals, but that didn't mean that the racing was any less intense.
As the motos wore on, the sky was slowly getting darker and darker, and the wind was ever so slightly picking up. Everybody knew that the rain was on it's way. The motos were rushed through as quick as possible, and even still there were no serious injuries. But no matter how quickly the officials pushed through the racing, it was inevitable that we were going to get wet. Before the moto's end the rain had arrived and it was clear that it wasn't leaving in a hurry.
Before long, the AA-Pro semis were up. The riders were sitting on the gate in the rain doing everything they could to get their tyres as dry as possible to reduce the risk of spinning off the start. Eventually the semis were run, with Mark Taylor, Tim Mores, Scott Taylor & Billy Hobbs making it out of the first heat, and Cale McCulloch, Brock Murray, Lindsay Truscott & Andrew Gillett making out of semi 2.
The rain continued to get heavier during the break between the semis and mains and the track was developing some small puddles. The first Pro mains were on the gate and it was going to be exciting to see how everyone fared in the quickly deteriorating conditions. As it turned out, only two mains for the AA-Women & A-Pro classes were held, with only 1 for the AA-Men, as well as half of the last moto before the event was cancelled due to the rain and the track being literally underwater.
AA-WOMEN
Kylie Patroni, Kirsten Dellar, Cat Hopkins, Alyce Patroni, Petra
Brown, Laura Western, Jackie Mattioli, Lola Perren & Ashleigh
Mayvay.
Alyce Patroni took ownership of the AA-Women when it counted, notching up two wins from two starts in the mains. Following her was Kirsten Dellar with two 2nds, with Alyce's older sister Kylie Patroni rounding out the podium with two 3rds.
A-PRO
Andrew Schultz, Mason King, Cameron Ainger, Jaymin King, Tyrone
Miller, Michael Tailor, Shaun Black & Tony Keogh.
The 2 A-Pro mains seen local hotshots Andrew Schultz & Cameron
Ainger shine. Home track knowledge served them well yesterday,
as they filled out the top 2 positions. I even seen Andrew Schultz
come out of turn two and manual through a deep puddle that had
formed. Very smart thinking. Schultz proceeded to check out in
both mains.
Filling out the podium was Mason King, who, after 2 mains was
on equal points with Ainger, but lost out on countback.
AA-PRO
Scott Taylor, Cale McCulloch, Brock Murray, Bill Hobbs, Tim Mores,
Lindsay Truscott, Andrew Gillett & Mark Taylor.
Just the one main for these guys, as the event was cancelled after the 2nd A-Pro main.
This main seen Scott & Cale jump straight to the point down the first straight. Turn 1 seen Scott holeshot over Cale, with Murray on the inside making his way into 3rd. Turn 1 also sees Mores & Truscott go down. Up the 2nd straight Mark Taylor was after Murray and looked to line him up going over the doubles into turn 2. This was not to be though after he jumped the double awkward and overcleared. The order never changed with Scott Taylor taking the win over Cale McCulloch & Brock Murray.

The Northern Park BMX club at Mill Park in Melbourne's northern
suburbs will be hosting the second round of the Autumn Series
on Friday 20 April (Tomorrow). Racing starts at 7pm.
New riders and visitors from other clubs are welcome.
The three round Autumn Series is currently supported by Goldcross Cycles Epping and Dirt Designs. The entry fee for each round is $5 per rider. There will be a specially designed presentation number plate as the series award. Riders will be scored/awarded in their own age classes, but may be combined with other classes during each of the rounds where classes are under subscribed. There will be additional awards to the series champions (highest points winners) in cruiser, male and female classes.
A series points system has been put in place to encourage participation.
Points will be scored on your overall position in your own age group for the night.
1st = 8 points, 2nd = 7, 3rd = 6 ... 7th = 2 and 8th = 1 point.
Bonus points are added for the number of people in your age class for the round.
2 riders = 2 bonus points, 5 riders = 5 bonus points.
So if you won in a class with only one rider you would get 8 + 1 = 9 points for the round. However if you got 3rd and there were 6 riders you would get 6 + 6 = 12 points.
Points from all three rounds will be counted for end of series totals. You only have to compete at one round to be eligible for end of series prizes, but you must pay for a minimum of two rounds.
We hope that this is a good model that we can build on in the future.
Current series category leaders
Cruiser: Dean Coles 9 pts
Women: Jane Stoyanoski 10 pts
Men: Shane Jenkins 12 pts
Location
The track is located at Sycamore Reserve, Mill Park, Victoria.
Training sessions
Gate practics every Wednesday night from 6pm.

It's
nearly 10 years since the Northern Park BMX track, then known
as Lalor, hosted the 1998 UCI World Cup. The track, the committee,
and even racing in general have changed dramatically since. Aside
from a few small changes to a couple of jumps and tidy up of a
few rough spots there is no reason why the track couldn't host
another major event. Which is why the club put their hand up to
be involved in the Victorian State series. Riders were pleasantly
surprised with the condition the track was in, the club did a
fantastic job to bring it back up to scratch. The only thing that
might spoil the day were the strong winds and the threat of rain.
There were 27 riders in the 14 & Over money class, 7 of them 30 & Over riders looking for some competition as the National Championships near. Luke Pretlove and French import Olivier Hoarau were the guys to watch in the motos. Simon Anderson, Kyle Horton and Adam Carey also did well. Jonathan Hoare looked a little sketchy in the early motos but soon got used to the track. Other guys who looked a threat for the final included Shannon Rademaker, Danny Galea and Adam Robb. After a 4-3-1 in the motos I even felt that I was in for a chance. But to get to the final there was still a semi and we all know anything could happen there.
Actually before that would commence Craig Walczuk and Shaun Cuthbert would have a run off for the final spot in the semis. Wally dropped back a little in the first straight but made up a lot of ground then dived for the front spot in canteen corner, he got his nose in front and messed up the rhythm section and lost momentum, once again he fought back and looked like he'd taken the win but the judges called a dead heat. Wally decided that he'd give it to Cuthbert.
In the semi there were no real surprises except that Olivier Hoarau hit the gate and put himself out of the running, Adam Robb took advantage and qualified for the main in the last spot.
When the gate dropped in the main Pretlove got out to the early lead from lane 5, Hoare pulled in behind him with Rademaker in the 3 spot and Galea on his outside, the rest of the field were bunched up behind them. By the next straight Pretlove had extended his lead to about 2 lengths, Hoare hanging on for second and Rademaker clearing the pack for third, we seemed to have lost Galea with Anderson pulling up into 4th. Horton slotted into 5th, Robb 6th and Carey had missed the gate to finish 7th, Galea rolled to the line in 8th.
The race meeting was run through very smoothly and very quickly. I think the track may have won a few fans too, well done to the club and the event organisers.

A one hour drive South East of Melbourne Warragul, or Western
Park as it is known, is the last of the truly old school tracks
in Australia. Totally unaffected by the natural evolution of BMX
racing that has made our sport as we know it today. Seeing the
track for the first time you would think you have stepped back
20 years earlier. A six lane, short, pedal start gate on a flat
hill. Narrow flat corners, short straights with just a single
jump for each of them. The track is fun, the surroundings make
for a picturesque back drop, all just a part of what makes up
the atmosphere that can't be recreated at any other track. For
me any open races held at Warragul are must do events, I'm not
the only one, this track has built quite a following over the
past few years.
Flat pedal racing
The flat pedal challenge has been thrown down for this
race for the money classes, so spread the word and leave the clips
at home.
bmxultra.com Hall of Fame
The bmxultra.com Hall of Fame presentation will be held
at the Warragul race on Sunday during the lunch break. The Hall
of Fame has been set up to recognise the pioneers of Australian
BMX racing and their contribution to the sport. Of the 12 nominees
for the first annual Hall of Fame awards five are from Victoria.
A testament to the state and it's early influence over the sport.
Former pro riders from back in the day who may attend include
Robbie Moreton and Jamie Hales (yet to confirm). So this could
be quite a historical gathering. If you know an old school BMXer
tell them to get along to Warragul this Sunday. They could even
get a day licence and enter to race vet pro for the day. For further
information email webmaster@bmxultra.com
or check out the nominee list at www.bmxultra.com/halloffame
Side hacks
Story goes that there will be side hack racing at Warragul.
I am not sure how that will work at the Warragul track, given
the lay out, with 6 man gate and tight turns. I would assume that
it will be one on one, or two on two, depending on how you want
to look at it. The Warragul track is narrow enough on a 20 inch,
it will be interesting to see the 'hacks through the corners.
Please enter early
The organisers have said the would prefer that people to enter
before Sunday. If you have to submit your entry late, call Greg
Siinmaa after 7.00pm on 0438 029 193. This speeds things up so
they don't have to add the entries on Sunday morning.
Photos from Warragul
Here's the links to some photos to give you a good idea
of the track lay out.
The Western Park (Warragul) BMX Track is located at Tarwin Street, Warragul, Victoria. Melways Map: 612 V7. Racing starts at 10am.

the first round of the 2007 UCI Supercross at Madrid on the weekend.
2005 series winner Robert DeWilde finished second, Christian Becerine

of the upcoming 2007 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup and 2007 UCI
BMX World Championships. Swatch will be the official timekeeper
and data service, providing the latest technology in timing and
data handling.
“UCI is excited to have a strong partner as Swatch teaming up for our BMX events” says Johan Lindström, UCI BMX Sports Coordinator.
“BMX is a dynamic and youth oriented sport that fits perfectly in with the Swatch image. Now with BMX being the first action sport into the Summer Olympic Games, it has also an enormous potential” says Klaus-Peter Mager, Head of PR & Events at Swatch International.
With the inclusion of BMX in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing China, a new exciting competition format has been recently introduced, where timing as become an essential part of the competition. “Not only do the riders qualify on their best lap time, but it also determines the start gate position. Most of the time, only 1/1000 separates the riders by the finish line, and it has become essential for us to have photo finish systems and timing transponders on the bikes. Swatch will be able to supply us with the cutting edge technology needed” continuous Lindström.

ONE BICYCLES press release
For most of our athletes these two race weekends are really
their season opener's. After a long winter break the riders are
working to get back into the groove. Hence these two races usually
finds them mid-pack and the podium eludes them.
Not this time. With the usual start in Sarasota, the team finished the week with a bang in Orlando. It was a great boost moving forward for all of us, for the rest of the season.
On the business side, we were impressed with how many riders in the sport were staying on their ONE frames. We had a chance to talk with a few of them without letting them know we were with the ONE Company. We were pleased to listen to the satisfaction they had with the choice they had made.
We also had a great meeting with the man behind Track Stars and have decided to put our marketing efforts behind this customer service oriented vendor. Their setup was current and well organized and customer service was like we had never seen before in the sport. Track Stars will be where America can go to get all their ONE product needs. If you have not heard of them yet, you can find them at www.trackstars.com
ONE Bicycles last year decide to eliminate the ONE US team, and only run the ONE/Kenda World Team, to redirect our resources to riders and teams in the sport. Well we are proud to announce that we started a company called PIT to carry our component lines and have hired Donna Snow (USA), Junior Women, and Edzus Treimanis (Latvia), Elite Men, to be our first PIT riders.
Then as a complete surprise to us, we had the opportunity to sit down with a former BMX great to discuss putting PIT as the major sponsor of his new up and coming BMX Team. A Press Release is schedules for June of this year with all the details. These two opportunities have given flight to ONE's desire to give back to the sport outside of their own interest.
In closing we want to thank the management of both Sarasota's and Orlando's track for accommodating us so nicely, for two great tracks, and two great weekends of racing! Of course, thank you so much ONE sponsors. Without your support none of this would have been possible.

Whoever may have thought the US would romp the BMX racing
in at the 2008 Olympics would have to be left scratching their
heads right now. If the Easter Classic is anything to go by Kyle
Bennett was the only US pro to take a win for the weekend and
was one of only three US pro riders to make the podium for the
weekend. Let's take a closer look at that for just a minute. Three
european riders, three Australian and three US riders on the podium
for the four events for the whole weekend. Latvian Arturs Matisons
made three from the four mains, this could be his best performance
on an international stage since blowing the competition away to
win the Junior Elite class at the 2003 World BMX Championships
at Perth.
Anyway back to the Australian's.
Khalen Young was the only Australian rider to have finished in the Elite Men's class on both days. A sixth for the UCI round and an impressive win on day 2 for the NBL elite series round. That win would have to have broken the record for the shortest time taken to win an Elite/AA pro race on US soil, it took only 3 weeks. Something I believe was held by fellow Aussie Kamakazi, who took one month.
Warwick Stevenson finished up with a second in the Elite Open on day 1 and a fifth in the Elite Men on day 2, not a bad weekend considering the class, but you can be sure that the former world champion will push to improve on that in the coming weeks.
Jared Graves had great success on the Saturday finishing the day with two thirds, indicative of his abilities to adjust to the US style of racing quickly. Jared didn't compete on the second day.
Luke Madill had some good qualifying results on Day 1 but couldn't convert them to a finals berth, he didn't race on Sunday. Keep an eye on him for Madrid, it will be his first UCI Supercross race since finishing second at San Jose in 2005.
Michael Fenwick, 2004 UCI World junior elite champion, was in the mix as well, however he was unable to make the cut in the elite men's class. Expect to hear more of in him the future.
The next stop for the Aussie pros is round 1 of the 2007 UCI Supercross series. Expect a couple of additional Australian riders to join them.

and celebrate those individuals who were instrumental in shaping
the sport of BMX racing in Australia. We believe the history of

After taking nominations from the bmxultra.com readers then asking numerous influencial riders and industry types to vote on our first inductees we have been keeping the winners a secret. For too long now.
Since there is a race on at Warragul's Western Park BMX track, very much an old school track, on Sunday April 22 we think this is the most fitting venue to present the first four bmxultra.com Hall of Fame inductees. We just need to run it by the organisers, but whether it's during the event at the mic or after the event in the car park we will be making the presentation there.

Round 6 of the NBL/UCI 2007 Pro Series tour headed back to one
of the biggest and longest NBL tracks on the circuit, Orlando,
Florida. The Orlando track has been around on the NBL National
circuit just about as long as there has been the NBL and it has
quite the history for some great racing. The 2007 Race held up
to the past with some increasable racing and some action that
will go down in history, with Kyle Bennett winning the Pro Elite
Main on Day 1 just one week after returning to the Pro tour after
major Knee Surgery! Kyle and his Free Agent teammate Cristian
Becerine had a great weekend in Orlando. Here is how they both
finished up.
Kyle Bennett raced the NBL Pro series last weekend
for the 1st time in 5 months and made a huge statement with a
2nd place finish in Elite men. This weekend Kyle said he was feeling
better and ready to have fun and did just that with a triumphant
win in the UCI Elite Class on Saturday. With one of the largest
international fields on US soil in a long time, Kyle easily won
the main event from start to finish. Kyle's determination and
help from his new training program from www.bmxtraining.com .
Kyle came back on Sunday and finished 3rd, giving him 3 great
scores in just 2 short weekends of racing, setting him up for
a shot at the NBL #1 Pro plate! Kyle heads off to Spain this weekend
for the 1st round of the UCI Supercross series. Kyle's Sponsors
include: Free Agent, Fly Racing, Bombshell Forks, UGP Products,
Kenda, ODI, Sun Ringle, Shimano, Powerbar, Cyto Sport, ORP, Thomson
Seat Posts, and BMXpros.com.
Cristian Becerine went into Orlando with a huge
points lead in both the NBL Pro Series and the halfway check point
series the NBL had put up. This series consists of the best 7
of the Elite Races to date and the series ended on Saturday. Cristian
missed out on the Elite Main even on Saturday but still had a
large enough lead to win the NBL Series checkpoint and take the
big cash home. On Sunday, Cristian was back in the main event
and finished 4th overall. Cristian heads off to Spain this week
for the first UCI Supercross event of the 2007 season. Cristian's
Sponsors include: Free Agent, Fly Racing, Sinz Racing Products,
Kenda, THE Products, ODI, Sun Ringle, Shimano, Powerbar, Cyto
Sport, OGIO, Oakley, Thomson Seat Posts, and BMXpros.com
Randy Stumpfhauser went into Orlando with a shot
at taking a top 3 spot in the checkpoint series and when the day
was done, he did just that, finishing 3rd in the series. The rest
of Randy weekend was not up to his usual performance, but he looks
to turn things around at the UCI Supercross event. Randy's sponsors
include GT Bicycles, Kenda, ODI, Tangent, Sun Rims, Bombshell,
Fly Racing, SINZ Products, Powerbar, CTI Knee Braces, OGIO, SDG,

While Australia's senior elite riders will need results on the board and recent Australian Championships will help with national team selection both of Australia's former elite World Champions Michael Fenwick and Warwick Stevenson will be in the US competing rather than attending Lake MacQuarie. That's not to say that the racing will be second rate, far from it. We all have seen how close racing has become over the past few years and it's never been more competitive here. Just because Michael and Warwick are former world champions there is no guarantee that even they would have a spot in the main.
In the past 12 months a whole bunch of guys have stepped it up. Mountain biker Jarred Graves has taken the UCI Oceania series by storm and has an eight point buffer on the rest of the field. With the goal of a position on the Australian Olympic team he has a solid slingshot start that had Australia's best beat for a while, that paired up with awesome bike handling skills, Graves is a force to reckon with. Graves lacks the racing experience of his competitors, but has plenty of time to learn. Khalen Young's return to racing has been quite successful. Khalen was always a very skillful rider, a natural on a BMX bike, that paired with the power he now generates, he has what it takes to challenge any rider, any time. Billy Jollifee finished 7th in the elite men's class at the World Championships. The only other Australian in the top eight is Jamie Gray, who's a proven contender on an international stage, being only one of two men to have qualified for the elite men's final the last two years in a row. Michael Robinson has mad skills, and can beat any rider on any given day, when it comes to mains though he doesn't seem to have a lot of luck, maybe this year will be the big one for him. Let's not forget Wade Bootes. He has collected his share of silver ware through his long racing career. At 33 years old he's the oldest in the field, and he doesn't look like slowing down any time soon. Daniel Johnstone is one of my favourite riders to watch. I have seen him make some strange decisions in corners and when he pulls them off they look awesome but they can also end in disaster. He just keeps getting faster. Then there's Luke Madill, always a contender. There are those who think that he's had his day since his horrific crash last year that nearly ended his racing career. Luke has recovered well and is as competitive as ever, he will be a favourite for the win this year. Kamakazi is the reigning champion, he seemed to have pulled through a low patch and is muscling his way around the track as quickly as he ever did. Julian Lim is a sleeper, keep an eye on him. Scott Taylor seems to be focused on his racing again, he'll be another rider to look out for. You can also expect Leigh Darrell and Todd Pascoe to have break through years this year. As I said the racing is just getting closer, so don't be surprised if someone I didn't mention causes an upset.
The elite women's class will be just as competitive. Former world champions Nicole Callisto and Melissa Mankowski will take on the reigning Australian champion Krystal Cranfield and former Australian champ Tanya Bailey. Of the nine women in the field I don't think this will be a four horse race, but I have a strong feeling that one of these girls will take the win. Despite not being on the Australian High Performance team Tanya Bailey has shown consistency through the Oceania UCI series and is currently positioned as the top ranked Australian female, just 4 points clear of Mankowski.
BMX Australia press release
BMX Australia has announced the design of the 2008 UCI-BMX Supercross
track in Adelaide will be similar to the newly released 2008 Beijing
Olympic site plan. The 2008 UCI-BMX Supercross to be held on Friday
11th and Saturday 12th April will be the first of its kind in
the southern hemisphere and will be a preview for riders intending
to compete at the first BMX event at the Beijing Olympics in August.
The Adelaide Supercross track will be built by the UCI track builder, Tom Ritzenthaler (USA) and will use similar specifications to the Olympic track. It will be constructed in the Jubilee Pavillion at the Adelaide Showgrounds.
The 2008 UCI Supercross Series round allocated to Adelaide by the UCI will start an exciting week of BMX activities at the same location. The following week will feature a midweek International Shootout for Probikx, Junior and Elite riders racing against the best from overseas. These events will then lead into the 2008 Australian BMX National Championships on the following weekend. It is expected that the track will be modified to suit the Australian National Track specifications.
The April UCI Supercross event is intended to assist BMX riders in the southern hemisphere to compete in a series which until now has only been held in the northern hemisphere usually in Europe and America.
Event Co-ordinator, Mr Graham Arnold confirms that this event has benefits for our potential Olympic athletes. “The Supercross only applies to elite and it carries bonus UCI ranking points and gives the Australians the opportunity to go up against the world’s best in their own backyard,” said Mr Arnold.
Adelaide has also been allocated as the location for the 2009 World Championship in July. This World Championships will be the first one following the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Around the time of the World Championship there will also be a “week of wheel action” with an International Open Race meeting, an Intercontinental Invitation event and an onsite lifestyle expo.
With the Supercross in 2008 and World Championships in 2009 in Adelaide BMX is now well placed with other cycling events such as the Tour Down Under.
“This just reinforces that Adelaide is the cycling capital of Australia with the support to hold major cycling events there,” said Arnold.
Major support for BMX Australia has come from Events South Australia, the events unit of the South Australian Government.
The promotion of these major events will begin with a trade expo at the upcoming World Championships in Vancouver, Canada. They will also be promoted the World Championships in Taiyuan, China in 2008 just prior to the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Mr Arnold has a wealth of experience being the event coordinator for both the 1998 and 2003 BMX World Championship which were held in Melbourne and Perth respectively. Mr Arnold has been appointed to work with a team of officials that have wide experience in organizing indoor BMX race meetings.

GATES & EVENTS
A full event schedule will be released with the finalized site
plan shortly. Refer to Nomination Form.
MARQUEES
The event committee has opted for marquees instead of grandstanding
after much debate. The committee decided to offer marquees as
alternative option that will provide sufficient cover in the event
of poor weather at a cost-effective pricing. Lake Macquarie hosted
the NSW State Title in 2003 with marquee arrangements and was
very successful.
Clubs and States can express interest in hiring a marquee by
contacting Darren Westwood at dacka@bigpond.net.au
Hired marquees will have premium viewing areas and Clubs/States
will be required to manage their marquees. Lake Macquarie BMX
Club has marquee guidelines, which promotes seating rotation everyday
ensuring everybody gets a chance to seat at the front. Chairs
also can be hired for $3.00 for the whole event, this option was
to cater for those who fly and save on the cost of purchasing
fold up chairs for the event.
Also people that have indicated they will be bringing personal
marquees can be placed them behind their club/state marquee for
additional coverage and bike security.
CAR PARKING
VIP’S, Pro Shops, disabled parking and nominated officials
will be the only people allowed to park inside the BMX Facility.
All other Car parking will be on Kindyerra Park and the field adjacent the Argenton Community Hall. Access from the field adjacent the Argenton Community Hall will be through the lane near rail line then through the rear of the school to the BMX facility. There will be a small walk from either car park. A detailed site map will be provided shortly.
PRO SHOPS
There will be several pro shops in attendance for your entire
bike and merchandise requirements. A full list of supporting Pro-Shops
will be released shortly.

Australia's finest are doing their country proud mixing it
up with the world's best on the US tour. This stop was the first
of the Spring Break double header at the NBL Gator Nationals at
Sarasota Florida. Warwick Stevenson was the man winning the elite
men on day one. Completely irrelevant to the Aussie theme, Warwick's
fellow Kuwahara team member American Matt Pohlkamp finished second
in that race. Taking the top two spots on the podium marks a first
for Kuwahara in modern times, and the last time this would have
happend would have been back around 20 years ago with Klint Miller
and Garry Ellis. Warwick followed that up with a second in Elite
Open and on day 2 a win in the Elite Open. Luke Madill also made
3 mains, his best finish was a third in elite open on day 1 and
a pair of eighths on day 2. Khalen Young made the elite men's
main on day 1 finishing seventh and proving his results at the
Winternationals were no fluke. Jarred Graves showed some good
form in the motos but had a little bad luck on his side. He did
finish third in the elite open on day 2.

Victorian State Series
Don't forget the Northern Park BMX club will be hosting
round three of the 2007 Victorian State series on Saturday April
14. Racing starts at 11 am.
Track tidy up
The Northern Park BMX club has built a strong club base
which was evident when a working bee was called to spend some
time on the track. More than a dozen people helped out on Saturday
digging rocks out of the track surface that had been exposed by
motorbikes, radio controlled cars and rain. Some members focused
on fixing up the faces of some of the jumps. Everyone who helped
should be proud of their work, the track is looking the best it
has since it was rebuilt and resurfaced in September 2005.
Autumn Series
The Autumn Series is off to a good start. The Northern Park BMX
Club has gone from running very few club races in 2006 to regular
events in 2007 which has helped to build a strong base of riders,
the club hopes to build on that over the year. Round two of the
Autum Series is on Friday April 20th at 7pm. The Autumn Series
is proudly supported by Dirt Designs and Goldcross Cycles Epping.

Before BSX2007 was even run back in January we were able
to forward $1,500 to the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation.
All thanks to the kind donations of two of the major supporters
of BSX, ManageSoft and Michael Carabetta.
With the Good Friday Appeal due to happen this Friday I got the remainder of the money together and banked it for the RCHF yesterday. There is still money to come in some where around $400-500 more, but I just started getting nervous with a few thousand dollars in cash just sitting around the house. It was in fact $4375.35, making the grand total raised from BSX2007 $5,875.35, so far. That's despite having to pay the $500 to the Murrindindi Shire Council for a fine for having run a BMX race event without a planning permit. Hopefully we will be able to organise something for next year so that won't happen again.
To everyone who supported the event through sponsorship, donations, volunteering, helping with the track, racing, spectating, or anything I may have forgotten, thank you very much.

Double A Marketing press release
Round 5 of the 2007 NBL/UCI Pro Series tour took place this past
weekend in Tampa, Florida at the Sarasota BMX race track. One
of the oldest, most used tracks on the NBL Pro tour, the Sarasota
track is one of the best in BMX. The weather was great for racing
and the huge international field in attendance made for some great
racing. With 3 important weekends of BMX racing taking place for
the UCI World and Continental rankings, the Double A Marketing
Pros in attendance were ready to race and wound up once again
with impressive results. Here are how they finished up in the
main events.
Cristian Becerine has been on a hot streak
of great results and wins up to Phoenix, where instead, he did
a lot of crashing. Leave it to one of the top Pros in BMX to come
back stronger than ever and take home another huge win. Cristian
did just that on Sunday, as he holeshotted and lead the entire
lap of the Elite Men's main event. Cristian also finished an impressive
4th in Elite Men on Saturday. Cristian now has a huge lead in
the NBL Pro Title points chase and looks to add his first NBL
Pro title to his impressive resume. . Cristian's Sponsors include:
Free Agent, Fly Racing, Sinz Racing Products, Kenda, THE Products,
ODI, Sun Ringle, Shimano, Powerbar, Cyto Sport, OGIO, Oakley,
Thomson Seat Posts, and BMXpros.com.
Kyle Bennett made his return to the NBL Pro National
Series this past weekend after his knee surgery at the end of
last season. Kyle has always been a strong racer, but to come
back from such a big injury and be at the top of the Elite Class
is almost impossible. Almost, but not for Kyle as he made a huge
statement to the entire class on Saturday as he convincingly took
a huge win in the Pro Open Class main event. On Sunday, Kyle backed
up his win with another huge result - 2nd in Elite Men's, just
behind Cristian. Kyle looks to jump right back into the swing
of things and be his old self. We sure are glad to see Kyle back
at the track and on top of the podium! Kyle's Sponsors include:
Free Agent, Fly Racing, Bombshell Forks, UGP Products, Kenda,
ODI, Sun Ringle, Shimano, Powerbar, Cyto Sport, ORP, Thomson Seat
Posts, and BMXpros.com.
Randy Stumpfhauser was red hot in Phoenix just
last week and he looked to carry his momentum into Tampa. With
what was one of the toughest Elite Men's classes at the 2007 UCI
series to date, Randy easily made the main event both days. On
Saturday, Randy would finish 5th in the Elite main event. On Sunday,
Randy looked for a better finish and did so with a 4th overall.
Randy was a bit disappointed as he was looking for another win
in the NBL series, but he will get his change again next weekend
in Orlando. Randy's sponsors include GT Bicycles, Kenda, ODI,
Tangent, Sun Rims, Bombshell, Fly Racing, SINZ Products, Powerbar,
CTI Knee Braces, OGIO, SDG, SRAM, Easton, Cyto Sport, and BMXpros.com.
Joey Bradford had a small crash at the ABA Phoenix
national last Sunday and it was a nagging injury that he dealt
with all week. Joey came to Florida with one thing on mind and
that was to win the Junior Elite Men's class on Saturday. With
the valuable UCI points on the line, Joey pushed through his pain
and raced. It was no easy task as some of the worlds top Junior
Elite racers were in attendance, but Joey walked away with another
win in the Junior Elite Class on Saturday. This makes a perfect
season for Joey in the NBL / UCI Junior Elite Class with 5 wins
and he looks forward to getting his 6th next weekend at the next
round of the NBL UCI series in Orlando, Florida. Joey's Sponsors
include GT Bicycles, Fly Racing, Oakley, Bombshell, THE Products,
Sun Ringle, Kenda, SDG, FSA, Sponsorhouse, ODI, Powerbar, Cyto
Sport, Circle E, SRAM, Avid, OGIO, Sirius Satellite Radio, JoeyBradford.com,
and BMXpros.com.
Double A Marketing proudly represents Cristian Becerine, Kyle
Bennett, Joey Bradford, Brandon Meadows, and Randy Stumpfhauser.

One of the greatest appeals of the Warragul BMX track, 100
Kms south-east of Melbourne, is that it's old school in every
sense of the word. We are talking a low, six lane, manual starting
gate, flat corners and one jump per straight. It doesn't get much
more old school than that. Many riders go there for a fun day
and to get back to their roots, especially the guys who are from
back in the day. With the second round of the Metro plate series
coming up on April 22 riders in all money classes are committing
to racing on flat pedals. Are you up for the challenge?
The Warragul, or Western Park BMX Club as it is officially known, is next to the football oval n Western Park Drive, Warragul. Melways reference 410 V7. Racing starts at 10:00am. Check the racing calendar for an entry form with all the details.
[Update: I just got word that the club may be upgrading it's gate to a 20 inch high gate with electronic starting mechanism in time for the Metro plate round.]
BMX Australia press release
BMX Australia are pleased to advise that a Totally Wild story
on "BMX Riding" will be going to air on Friday 6th April
2007 at 4.00 pm on Network Ten throughout Australia.
The segment features several South East Queenslander riders and national Talent ID Coach, Wade Bootes. It covers the skills of the sport for the general public. BMX Australia would like to thank the riders who participated for their time and effort.
Getting onto a national children’s program has been the initiative of BMX Australia and we are excited to see coverage of our sport in the arena of children’s television.
