21/12 Happy holidays from bmxultra.com

by Shane Jenkins
We head off on holidays over the Christmas/New Year break, so we won't be doing the daily updates over that period, I expect there will be some from time to time, but not with the militant regularity.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank a few people, and hope I don't miss anyone.

I would like to thank the website crew. Especially to Jason Bergstrom for his photos from the US, and Mark Dobson for administering the forum (and all the other moderators who have helped keep things in order over the year).

A big thanks to the team riders for flying the flag and helping spread the word of bmxultra.com right across Australia and the US.

To all those people who have provided news through the year a big thanks.

To our sponsors and partners for all their support for the website, the team and providing products for reviews:
One Bicycles, Answer BMX, SupercrossBMX, Dirt Designs, Tektro, Elite Cycles, Action Sports Depot, and XBR.

Oh and how can I forget the people who have been helping me prepare the backyard track for BSX in January. A big thanks to all, especially Chris Van Winden and Levi Barnett who both seem to be spending as much time there as I am.

A big thanks to the readers, yes that's right, you!

Have a safe and happy holiday season. We will be back to regular updates on Jan 6th, and expect to do a couple over the break as well.

If you have any suggestions for 2008 feel free to email them to webmaster@bmxultra.com

How to buy One Bicycles products in Australia
If you would like to purchase a One Bicycles frame or accessories in Australia the best way to do so is to head down to your local bike store and place an order. If they don't know what you are talking about tell them to call Elite Cycle Imports while you wait and place your order there and then. After doing some calculations myself I have found the cheapest way to get One Bicycles products in Australia is through a local reseller.

20/12 Track Attack dates

by Shane Jenkins
At the start of the year on the bmxultra.com forum there was an attack on a particular demographic of riders (that I fit into) for not supporting Track Attack (http://bmxultra.com/smf/index.php?topic=116.0). It's water off a duck's back for me personally because I choose which races I want to do for very specific reasons.

However I was checking out the Track Attack entry form closely for the first time, I was trying to work out which races I would be able to do in the 2008 series. As in most industries in Aus the company I work for will be shutting down for a couple of weeks over the Christmas break. That's 2 weeks of forced leave. Now the next big thing I plan to do in 2008 is take about 7 days off over the period when the UCI Supercross and Australian Championships are on over in Adelaide. That's pretty much all my annual leave gone. That considered, it leaves me to work around my current commitments.

Saturday for the UCI round at Park Orchards is fine. BSX is a charity event raising money for the Royal Children's Hospital which for me outweighs any other event on the racing calendar, that's on the Monday, but since that requires so much attention I won't be able to attend Round 2 on the Sunday. Then the mid week races start at 6:15pm and I don't finish work until 6:30 at the earliest, mostly closer to 7:30. Then Friday there's a race that starts at 10am. Friday is a normal working day for most people. The public holiday is on the Monday following. Which leaves me to just be able to attend the final round on the Saturday. That's just 2 rounds from 6 races.

I am sure I am not the only rider effected by employment that I rely on to provide money to pay the bills, put a roof over my head and support my filthy BMX habit, especially in the 30+ age group. Track Attack seems to be aimed more at the kids on school holidays and interstate riders these days with little consideration of others. If anyone wishes to comment about lack of commitment or support for classes at the event, in future, I suggest they should look beyond their own noses and see that there's a real world out there and people have real reasons to choose work over BMX racing. I know where my heart wants to be, track side breathing in dust for hours on end, but it's not always possible.

20/12 BAWLS Guarana re-signs sponsorship deals with BMXers Matt “Ruckus” Pohlkamp and Rachel “Thunder” Smith

BAWLS Guarana Press release
Miami, FL – BAWLS Guarana, the Official Energy Drink of the National Bicycle League, today re-signed sponsorship deals with NBL Elite riders Matt “Ruckus” Pohlkamp and Rachel “Thunder” Smith for the 2008 season!

“Sponsoring Matt and Rachel for the 2007 season has been an incredible asset to our support of BMX racing,” said BAWLS Guarana Marketing Director Sabrina Gonzales. “2008 promises to be an even bigger year for BAWLS, as well as for Matt and Rachel and we’re proud to join them for the ride!”

Team Kuwahara rider and BAWLS Pro Matt Pohlkamp has been a part of the sport for the past 19 years and is currently ranked 4th in the NBL. Rachel Smith is the defending 2007 NBL National Series Champ and represented the US this year at the 2007 Pan American games in Brazil.

Under their sponsorships, Matt and Rachel will stay energized with unlimited access to BAWLS Guarana products – so be sure to catch them speeding down the track! They will also represent their favorite energy drink in style with exclusive, custom BAWLS Guarana helmets and BAWLS gear. Starting in January, Matt will ride in a one-of-a-kind BAWLS Guarana Cherry helmet!

BAWLS has re-signed as the Official Energy Drink of the NBL for the 2008 racing season, with exclusive sampling and track signage rights at all NBL-sanctioned national races. BAWLS and the NBL launched an exclusive cooperative marketing effort through a limited edition run of BAWLS Guarana CompUSA packaging dedicated to BMX racing, as well as a nationwide contest at Target stores last spring.

About BAWLS

BAWLS is the brainchild of entrepreneur Hoby Buppert, CEO of Hobarama, LLC, who named the beverage for the caffeinated “bounce” the drink packs. Widely distributed to local supermarkets, convenience stores (7-Eleven, Speedway/SuperAmerica), Target, Microcenter stores and gaming venues; BAWLS is a premium, non-alcoholic, carbonated beverage made from the guarana berry harvested in the Amazonian Rainforest. The caffeine found in BAWLS Guarana contains the same amount of caffeine as coffee and nearly three times that of traditional sodas due to a naturally occurring form of the stimulant found in the guarana berry. BAWLS’ unique refreshing flavor tastes like a citrus infused cream soda and its popularity continues to grow among caffeine-deprived, refreshment-seeking techies, students, professionals and athletes in need of a Bounce.

19/12 bsx2008 update

by bmxultra.com
When the third annual BSX event goes ahead on Monday January 21st (gates open at 11am), we will be ready for anything. Even rain won't get in our way this time. We have invested in enough waterproof covers to protect the first half of the track from the rain, meaning that the track will be super fast come race time.

bsx2008 is on the Monday following the UCI race that kicks off the Track Attack series in Melbourne. Mark your calendars.

Change of start time
With a council permit we have had to change the start time for practice. The gates will open at 11am and practice (photo session) will run for two hours until 1pm.

Schedule (subject to change)
11:00 Practice (photo session)
13:00 Qualifying timed runs (45 mins)
13:45 10 min break to determine top qualifiers
13:55 Round 1 elimination (20 mins)
14:15 10 min break
14:25 Round 2 elimination (10 mins)
14:35 10 min break
14:45 Round 3 elimination (10 mins) - Pro open 1/4 finals
14:50 10 min break
15:00 Semi finals (5 mins)
15:05 10 min break
15:15 Finals

Challenge races start 10 minutes after the finals. Presentation and auctions immediatly after that.
Free ride session available after the event. The bsx2008 must be finished by 5pm according to the council permit, so we have plenty of time for slippage.

Calling all girls
Tanya Bailey and Ziggy Callan have both shown interest in racing the pro women's class at bsx2008, but it's not going to be as exciting with just the two of them. If you are thinking of hitting up bsx2008, take the plunge, it's the best fun you can have on two wheels and one of the best covered events by Australia's BMX media with BMXPress mag and event gold partner XBR in attendance.

Challenge races
Do you want to see a particular race match up? Or maybe you want to race against your favourite pro rider? Make a $30 donation to the Royal Children's Hospital (donations are tax deductable and we have a receipt book) and we'll set up the race for you. Please email in advance or at least organise it early in the day so we can fit it in.

Track changes
There has been a number of changes made through the track since bsx2007. With the aid of the event DVD we were able to analyze the track and where the riders were having the most trouble. Mostly we have lengthened jumps that people were over jumping and tweaked corners. The landings of jumps entering corners have been changed to put the rider in perfect position for the tight corners. We have also tried something to even up the two sides of the track for those that believed there was a bias. Track times should be faster than ever at next years event.

UCI and BSX
A number of people are heading down to Victoria for the UCI round at Park Orchards on Saturday and planning to stick around until Monday for BSX, they have been asking what time the event will finish. Racing should finish at 3:30pm (providing no delays) then auctions until about 5pm. Pheasant Creek is about an hour from the airport, if you have any questions, or require directions to the airport just send an email to webmaster@bmxultra.com

Everyone's a winner
You don't have to be Luke Madill to win at bsx. Everyone has a chance at winning, even if you aren't racing, with a 2008 PK Ripper as a door prize and a whole bunch of auctions and raffles. If winner's are grinners, then there will be a lot of grinning at bsx2008.

bsx2008bsx2008 Poster
In case you missed it in the last update Splash Creative (www.splashcreative.com.au), a Melbourne based design company, have put together and awesome poster for bsx2008. Click the smaller image to the right for a bigger version, print it off and attach it to your fridge.

Entry forms available soon
We generally take entries in the days leading up to the event and on the day. But entry forms will be available for download soon. The entry form also has the directions to the track location.

Donations
We have donation forms that will be posted to the site soon, if you would like to make a donation email webmaster@bmxultra.com and I will forward the form.

Working bee/riding session
We are planning another riding session on Sunday Jan 6th and a trial race maybe the weekend after that.

Volunteers
We won't have the fantastic people from ManageSoft helping out this coming BSX, which means we will need to drum up some extra volunteers, if you are interested in helping out, please drop us an email.

Partnership packages
There are lots of sponsorship opportunities too, we prefer to call them partnerships because it's with your help that we are able to help two great charities. Since all the profits go straight to the Royal Children's Hospital your donations go to a great charity and are tax deductible.

What is BSX?
The BSX is an event to add some fun to an intense week of racing while raising money for the Royal Children's Hospital and the Kinglake West CFA. We have raised nearly $10,000 for the RCH over the past two years!

BSX is a pro only event. The three classes available are Pro Open, Pro Women and 30 & Over open wheel.

19/12 Terrigal Lad brings home the goodies from Cycling’s night of nights.

Terrigal BMX Club press release
Terrigal BMX Club rider Josh Webb has been named the Sportscover Junior Male BMX Cyclist of the year.  Josh was presented his award by Australian Cyclist of the Year, Cadel Evans at a gala ceremony held in Adelaide, at The National Wine Centre which was attended by a host of Australia's cycling stars.

After an incredibly successful year Webb was still surprised to win.  ‘I didn’t really expect to win,’ he said.  ‘There are just so many good riders out there that I didn’t see myself as the cyclist of the year, it is such an honour and I’m stoked’.  This year Webb achieved the number three world ranking, topped the Oceania rankings for the year & won the Rookie of the year at the BmxPress Gold Cup Awards.

Living close to the Terrigal BMX Track gave Josh the opportunity to build the BMX mileage, confidence & skills that helped to get him where he is today.  ‘Josh only started riding 7 years ago’, his mother Jenny tells.  ‘We lived very close to the Terrigal track so Josh would go there every possible opportunity & just ride & ride & ride until we would drag him off for meals.  He would have slept there had we let him, he loved it from the start’, she said.

Turning 18 this Boxing Day, Josh will now move from Junior Elite to Elite Men where he will have his work cut out for him but he remains confident.  ‘It is a big step from junior elite into elite men but I quite often race these guys under different formats & although it is tough, I can still hold my own’, says Webb.

With BMX making its debut as a medal sport at the 2008 Beijing Olympics Josh’s motivation remains high.  ‘I’m not quite ready for Beijing next year but I would love to represent my country in the London Olympics in 2012!  That’s now my goal’, he says.

With the North American continent slightly ahead in the schedule, Mike Day (USA) and Kyle Bennett (USA) have catapulted to the front in the Elite Men ranking. The ever consistent Sarah Walker (USA) has a slight advantage over Sam Cools (CAN) in the Elite Women Ranking.

To view the latest individual ranking (dated 12.12.2007), please visit;

The even more important Nations Ranking (which counts for the Olympic Games qualification) has also been updated as. In the Nations Ranking for Men, USA is currently ranked 1st, with the Netherlands 2nd and Australia 3rd. For the Women Nations Ranking, USA has a slight lead over New Zealand, with France ranked 3rd.

The Nations ranking is based on the countries top 3 riders (starting from the 2006 BMX World Championships). The Nations Ranking will function as the main qualification criteria for countries Olympic Games qualification. To view the Olympic Qualification criteria, please see Part XI of the UCI rule book on the following link; http://www.uci.ch/Modules/BUILTIN/getObject.asp?MenuId=MjI1MA&ObjTypeCode=FILE

2007/2008 UCI CALENDAR
The 2007/2008 BMX Calendar is posted on the UCI website. Being the Olympic year, the calendar is running from 1 August 2007 to 1 June 2008, ending with the 2008 UCI BMX World Championships. See link; http://www.uci.ch/modello.asp?1stLevelID=c&level1=5&level2=3&idnews=3764

2007 SEASON WRAP-UP
The 2007 BMX season will go down in the history books as one of the most competitive and spectacular ever. With the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup kicking off in Madrid, Spain, it was the start of a great series with amazing racing. Khalen Young (AUS) took a surprising win in front of the world’s best, confirming that he was back and here to stay.

While the BMX Supercross World Cup took a break, the world’s best BMX racers headed to Victoria, Canada for the UCI World Championships to fight for gold medals and rainbow jerseys. The 2007 UCI BMX World Championships were held on a fantastic track, and creating some amazing race action. Many were quoted as saying it was “the best World Championships ever”. Kyle Bennett took an emotional win in Elite Men coming back from years of injury. Shanaze Reade (GBR) secured her position as number 1 in her first year as an Elite Woman. Junior, Swiss rider Yvan Lapraz could have won the “play of the year” title, coming from dead last to win the Junior Men final. Magalie Pottier (FRA) was the only one to double, winning in both Junior Women and Junior Cruiser Women.

Jonathan Suarez (VEN) won the Elite Men Cruiser title, with Sarah Walker (NZL) grabbing the Elite Cruiser Women rainbow jersey. Fausto Endara (ECU) took the win in Junior Cruiser Men class.

With only a few weeks to charge their batteries, the very best headed for the 2nd round of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup in Beijing, China. The event was not only a BMX Supercross event, but would also function as an important test event for the Olympic Games and be the only time the athletes could get acquainted with the massive Olympic track.

It would be an understatement to say that riders and teams where impressed by the Olympic track and venue. As well as the spectacular and demanding track, the heat and humidity added another level of difficulty for the athletes. In the end, Donny Robinson (USA) coped with the exhaustion and showed his determination, taking a narrow win over Robert De Wilde (NED). For the first time, the Women were to compete on a full-blown BMX Supercross track. Not only did they conquer the big start ramp, but with the amazing skills of today’s elite women the racing action was brought to a whole new level. Shanaze Reade (GBR) took an emotional win in front of (returning MTB superstar) Ann-Caroline Chausson (FRA).

The 3rd round of the BMX Supercross was once again organized in conjunction with the AST Dew Tour, this time in Salt Lake City, Utah (USA). With an amazing setting in downtown Salt Lake City, the BMX Supercross track was ready for some intense race action. This however didn’t happen, when the skies opened up and forced the finals to be cancelled. The time trials were declared the official results, and the world’s fastest BMX’er (no elbows included) Mike Day (USA) took his first BMX Supercross win.

The 2007 UCI BMX Supercross finals headed once again to Fréjus, France and the massive Roc d’Azur festival. This time the Elite Women were also invited, creating a spectacular racing show and frenzy in the French crowd. Laetitia le Corguille (FRA) took a strong win in front of the cheering crowd. Marc Willers (NZL) created an upset and took his first BMX Supercross win.

The ever consistent Robert “Afro-Bob” De Wilde (NED) took home the 2007 UCI BMX Supercross Champion title in front of Donny Robinson (USA). Amongst the women, Laetitia le Corguille (FRA) grabbed the overall title in front of Gabriella Maria Diaz (ARG).

Look for the 2007 UCI BMX Supercross double-DVD (more than 3 hours of race action!) to hit the shelves in January 2008. This is a must for every BMX fan.

18/12 Round 1 and 2 of the European Championship 2008

ONE KENDA press release
Round 1 and 2 of the European Championship for Junior/Elite Men and Women were held in the St. Etienne, France.

The European Championship series started months earlier then usual.

Different training and planning was required from all riders.

No outdoor races yet and that meant smaller tracks and crowded events. In this case around 1900 riders were attending the event.

For riders of team ONE/Kenda it turned out to be a great weekend with excellent results even though due the early start most of the new parts and gear wasn't ready yet.

Magalie Pottier from France moved up to Elite Women leaving Joyce Seesing as the only ONE rider in Junior Women.

Emilio Falla from Ecuador is staying at the UCI center for his training programm for the 2008 season and meanwhile Emilio is able to race the events in Europe.

Emilio will go back to South America in January to race the Latin American Championships.

What caught peoples attention - the domination of ONE's Latvian riders in Junior and Elite Men, a track covered with small stones, the first jump at the bottom of the starting hill, Magalie's first year in Elite Women, not enough stands for the audience, and Emilio's and gates.

Results:

Elite Men
Saturday: 5. Arturs Matisons LAT 6. Maris Strombergs LAT
Sunday: 1. Maris Strombergs LAT 3. Arturs Matisons LAT

Elite Women

14/12 Good beginning for BMXManager’s riders Hamon & Moo-Caille

BMXManager press release
This past weekend was the beginning of the euro season for the BMXManager’s riders : Thomas Hamon and Moana Moo Caille. They travelled to Saint Etienne where the race took place during this famous french indoor. There were more than 150 riders in Elite. So they had 1/16’s on saturday and 1/8’s on sunday. Our riders were very strong, very consistant in first straight and they were flying all over the track.

Moana was unstoppable saturday. But, in quarter,  he did a little mistake in the third jump and was 5th after the first corner. He tried to come back up for a fourth in vain. The sunday was definitely better for him. He led all races he was into. Logically, Moana was in the main. Once again he had a great start with a great first straight. The first turn was complicated : Moana was 2nd but Sifiso Nhlapo took his inside and moved Moana to the outside. That was hard for him to stay fast and the others riders overtook his place. Moana crossed the finish line in 8th. He is 10 in the UE rankinng for the moment.

Thomas had a good feeling all the weekend too. Saturday he was one of the best  “1st straight guy”. He had no problems until the semi where he opened an inside... And that was a big mistake because some riders took this inside... He was 5th in the second straight, the race was very closed. He tried to take a good turn and crashed with 3 others riders. As Moana sunday was different for him. The mistake of saturday made him stronger. He killed the race until the semi which was hard but he qualified. In the main he was on the lane 7. He had to take a good gate for win. That was not enough cause Thomas was 4th in the first corner. He kept this place until the last corner where he slipped and finished 7th.

Moana and Thomas are now training in order to race the next event : Round 3+4 of the Euro Championship wich will be in Zwolle, The Nederlands.

12/12 ITS and BMXMAD join bsx2008

by bmxultra.com
BMXMAD and ITS (Intense Tyre Systems) have just come on board as silver partners for the third annual BSX event which is set to go ahead on Monday January 21st, gates open at 12pm. That's the Monday following the UCI race that kicks off the Track Attack series in Melbourne. Mark your calendars.

Both ITS and BMXMAD were very generous this year and donated lots of awesome products for bsx2007, so don't miss out on bsx2008 in January.

UCI and BSX
A number of people are heading down to Victoria for the UCI round at Park Orchards on Saturday and planning to stick around until Monday for BSX, they have been asking what time the event will finish. Racing should finish at 5pm then auctions until about 6pm.

In case you missed it in the last update Splash Creative (www.splashcreative.com.au), a Melbourne based design company, have put toegther and awesome poster for bsx2008. Click the smaller image to the right for a bigger version, print it off and attach it to your fridge.

Donations
We have donation forms that will be posted to the site soon, if you would like to make a donation email webmaster@bmxultra.com and I will forward the form.

Working bee/riding session
The final working bee was on Sunday, it was the last of the changes for the track, from now on it's just clean up and patch work. Thanks to Craig and his crew for helping out, there will be a lot of riding up to the event in hope to roll it in the best it can possibly be.

06/12 Random Gate in Australia

BMX Australia press release
Following the decision by the UCI BMX Commission last month to introduce the random gate starts at UCI BMX World Championships in 2008 for all classes and at the Supercross.World Cups further advice has now been received.

The UCI BMX coordinator, Johan Lindstrom, has advised BMX Australia that it was also recommended by the UCI BMX Committee that random gate starts be used at the following events:

a) Category 3 meetings: UCI Ranking Rounds
b) Category 4 meetings: National Championships and National Series.

BMX Australia National Officiating Director, Mr. Ian North, has confirmed that BMX Australia will be using the random gate at the next National Championships to be held in Adelaide in April, 2008. It will be used at the National Championships for all classes. The random gate will also be used at the National Hog’s Breath Café Probikx and Champbikx Series.

Mr North says, “Now that the UCI will be using the system for all classes at future BMX World Championships, BMX Australia has a responsibility to all of its riders trying to qualify for teams for the Olympics and for the World Championships to gain as much experience as possible with this gate system.”

Mr North also stated that although this mechanism is required for class 1 – 4 UCI events there is no requirement for clubs to upgrade their existing starting system to incorporate the random gate at this stage.

“Whilst there is no compulsion at club level to go out and purchase this mechanism at this time,” said Mr North. “It does affect us on a National level.”

Mr North added, “On the other hand if clubs want to go out and start using this system then that is a matter for them. The benefits for their riders are obvious.”

Mr North pointed out that these points would be fully discussed at the next national officiating conference.

06/12 Vic Champs slow down

by bmxultra.com
After suggesting that the second day of the Victorian State Championships was slowed down by the video yesterday I was reminded that there was a final for everyone. Not just the top 8 but for 9-16 then 17 to 24 and so on, for each class. An overkill at a title event, but it's now expected since it's been run that way her in Victoria for so long, I wonder how many other states do it. Another reason for delay was the sprocket rocket presentation, but those guys are the champions of the future and deserve a little recognition.

That's the last you will hear about the subject from me, if you want your say check out the forum.

05/12 Victorian Championships race report part 2

by bmxultra.com
There were 27 riders in the A pro class, including some big names, like former elite state champions Danny Galea and Simon Anderson, there was Jordan Morgan who was flying at the 2006 State titles. Two of the early favourites were Matt Dunsworth and Kyle Horton, but it was by far a 2 horse race, the motos proved that. It was a very tight field. Come semis time there was a run off for the final spot. Mount Gambier's Karl Ballintyne narrowly beat out a much improved Chase Collins. There was no bigger surprise than the home town hero Andrew Howieson qualifying easily to the semi and then taking a second to secure a spot in the final.

When the gate dropped in the main Anderson, Galea and Dunsworth jumped to the early lead followed closely by Howieson, Morgan and Horton. Denholm and Stagg were bringing up the rear. The field stretched out over the second straight. Dunsworth had taken the lead followed closely by Simon Anderson who looked like he was ready to take the lead in the second corner. Galea had slotted into fourth and was challenging Galea. Anderson ran into trouble in the third straight rhythm section which allowed Dunsworth out to an unbeatable lead. Galea slipped into second and in the last straight Morgan just took third over Horton with Anderson slipping back to the five spot.

In the AA Women Grace Ireland was unbeatable, she took the clean sweep, Ashleigh Cragg took second with Talia Smith in third. Victorian riders Erin Anderson and Ashleigh Weier had a close battle in the final for fourth and fifth, it was Anderson who grabbed the four spot.

There was certainly some awesome racing one of the races I was looking forward to was the 13 boys final. Denholm V's Turner. Sure there were a bunch of other guys in the fianl worthy of being there, but they don't quite have the showmanship of this duo. When the dust had settled in the main it was Denholm who had taken line honours, you can be sure though that Turner will be back for another round real soon.

I must applaud 3 riders who really did it tough on a hot and sunny weekend on a track that certainly felt long and both physically and mentally draining. Simon Anderson, Danny Galea and Kyle Horton all competed in 3 classes, which is an achievement on it's own, but for all of them to have made all three mains, that really says something about the character and the ability of those guys. My hat goes off to you.

I have to say I love how quickly racing went through on Saturday, it was fast paced, but it meant riders could get home early and get some rest before finals day. Sunday on the other hand was dragged out a lot longer than it needed to be. It was explained to me that it was because of the video. Now if the video was going to everyone I could understand that, but only people who bought it would get a copy, but still everyone suffered because of it. 4 rounds of motos were run on Saturday in about the same time as 1 moto and finals on Sunday. Imagine if BMX Australia slowed their racing down for the video at the Australian Championships.

All in all it was a great weekend on a fantastic track. Rumours are that the tracks first straight may change for the Track Attack event coming up in Jan.

04/12 Northern Park vandalized

by bmxultra.com
On the Victorian State Championships weekend the Northern Park BMX Club (AKA Lalor) club rooms were broken into and vandalized. There was over $1000 in damages and over $200 in food stock destroyed.

After a successful year of growing the club and running some of the best supported races in the state it's a disappointing set back.

If any of our readers notice anyone suspicious lurking around club rooms at a track near you, even if it's not your local track, contact the club representatives or the local authorities. Attacks like this one could mean the end of struggling clubs, and if you want somewhere safe and fun to ride it's in your best interest to do the right thing.

The 19 year old today managed a win in the second round of the National Probikx Series in Medina, Perth.  Mankowski beat Western Australia’s junior Lauren Reynolds (Bunbury) and State Champion Catherine Hopkins (High Wycombe, Perth) who finished in second and fourth respectively. Third was another junior from Queensland, Cherie Simpson (Nerang). After winning the first national round yesterday, Mankowski secures an early lead in the elite women’s series.

"I've only been on my bike for five weeks,” explained Mankowski. “So I thought I'd come over here for a it of a warm-up before Nerang and it paid off.”

“My training's been going good at home and everything's fallen back into place since my accident so that's a good thing to look forward to.”

The former high performance squad member narrowly missed selection in this year’s squad however it has not dampened her enthusiasm.

“Now I've got to concentrate on what I've got to do and keep doing my training and hopefully everything will fall into place before next year,” she said.

In the men’s final an early challenge from Jamie Gray (Beenleigh, Bris) was responded to by another strong performance by yesterday's winner, Brian Kirkham (Hillbank, Adel). The 21 year old showing his move from Port Augusta to Adelaide has had a positive effect on his racing.

“We’ve got a great little training group now and South Australians are looking strong,” he said.

Gray claimed second after a disappointing crash in yesterday’s final. Third was 21 year old, Michael Fenwick (Warradale, Adel) while Canadian rider, Mischa Partridge, got fourth.

Former Australian High Performance Coach, Sean Dwight (Campbelltown, Syd) slipped off the pedals at the start but regained ground to get a creditable fifth place. Local chances Brock Murray (Rockingham, WA and Andrew Gillett (Rockingham, WA) placed seventh and eighth respectively.

Kirkham now leads the series with 261 points; Fenwick claims the series second spot with 201 points while Gray is currently third with 161 points.

Adelaide's rising star, Sam Willoughby (Trott Park, Adel) dominated the junior men’s ranks and his consecutive wins now put him well ahead on the leader board.

In the 14 Champbikx South Australians took the wins with Liza Dunn in the girls and Zain Ariffin winning the boys.

The closest racing over the two rounds came from the 15 girls Champbikx. Melinda McLeod (Mackay, QLD) proved her gold medal from the Worlds meant she should beat the silver medallist Lacey Oliver (Nerang, QLD) which she did today. The 15 boys was won by Shannon Burnett.

Western Australians proved their dominance in the 16 divisions with Kirsten Dellar (Hills, Perth) winning the girls and Trent Evans (High Wycombe, Perth) repeating yesterday's win.

The next rounds of the series are combined with the first of the International Oceania Rounds on the Gold Coast on 4 - 6 January. It should attract New Zealand and Australian riders hopeful of making an impression on selectors.

03/12 PROFILE RACING Auctions a Historic BMX Freestyle Frame For Charity

Profile press release
Profile racing is proud to announce an auction of a historic BMX Freestyle frame, fork, handlebars, and padset to benefit a historic BMX rider, Jimmy Levan, who recently suffered a severe injury.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=220178690054

According to Sandy Carson, Jimmy has been progressing pretty well since he came out his coma last week and sounds better each time she talks to him on the phone. He has been transferred from the ICU at Morristown Memorial Hospital to the JFK Brain Rehabilitation Institute and is up, shuffling around and piecing his memory back together. It'll be a long road to recovery but she adds that he is lucky to be in the best rehab center for his injuries and has great friends behind him.

The bad news is that Jimmy's insurance WILL NOT cover his rehab program which he just checked into. The estimated total of the rehab bills is at least $70,000 and that's coming out of his family's pocket.

To benefit Jimmy, Profile Racing is auctioning off a New, Old Stock circa 1985 Profile ProStyler Frame, Fork, Ladder Handlebars (still with original warranty card), Padset (still in original packaging), and old style Profile polished seat post clamp.

The Frame and Fork are unfinished, so you can paint them any color you wish. We recently bead-blasted the frame and fork, meaning they are completely clean and ready for paint. The Ladder handlebars are painted in the original Green color with original stickers. The pad set contains crossbar, frame, and stem pads, all with Profile ProStyler logos, and is still in the original Flite sealed plastic bag. The seatpost clamp is a Profile old-style single bolt 1" polished aluminum seat post clamp.

These are original twenty plus year old parts that have been in our old warehouse waiting to see the light of day again. We will include a certificate of authenticity for the winner of this auction. All proceeds from this auction will go to Jimmy and his family to aid in his recovery.

Pictures are located at the ebay auction or at http://profileracing.com/news_full.php?id=636

03/12 Australian National Series - Perth, Round 1

BMX Australia press release
Two crashes in the elite men's race saw five finalists out of the top placings in round one of the National BMX Probikx Series at Medina, south of Perth today. South Australians claimed the podium with Brian Kirkham (Hillbank, Adel) leading from the gate and staying ahead of trouble to take the win. Michael Fenwick (Warradale, Adel) placed second and newcomer to the elite class young Matthew Willoughby (Trott Park, Adel) came third.

“I was hoping to get a good gate start and get out in front,” explained Kirkham. “It was a hard first corner. All the carnage happened behind me so I didn’t know who went down.”

With round two on tomorrow the 22 year old is aiming to repeat today’s performance. “A win’s a win so hopefully I get some good racing again tomorrow,” said Kirkham.

The crashes in the men’s race started on the first jump when Joel Clark (Sunshine Coast, QLD) and local favourite Brock Murray (Rockingham) locked handlebars. Clark had qualified the fastest with a 37.52 seconds time trail but the fall in the final resulted in a broken collarbone. Clark is hoping to resume training after four to six weeks. Another crash soon after in the first turn saw internationally ranked Jamie Gray (Beenleigh, Bris) along with Sean Dwight (Campbelltown, Syd) and Andrew Gillett ( Rockingham, WA) out of contention.

In the elite women’s classes Queensland riders beat their Western Australian counterparts. Melissa Mankowski (Moranbah, QLD) was too strong for Western Australia’s state champion Catherine Hopkins (High Wycombe, Perth ) while junior women’s Cherie Simpson (Nerang,QLD) secured first from Lauren Reynolds (Bunbury,WA).

The standout rides of the day came in junior men with Sam Willoughby (Trott Park, Adel) a clear winner after dominating the 16 boys Champbikx Series last year.

The tussle for domination in the 15 girls saw silver medallists form the World Championships, Lacey Oliver (Nerang) beat the gold medallist, Melinda McLeod (Mackay). Third was Prue Harvey (Adelaide).

The 15 boys saw Queensland’s Adam Shields (Mackay) beat Darryn Goodwin (Bayswater, Perth) with South Australia's Thomas Rowe in third.

Another standout ride came from Trent Evans (Southlake, Perth) in 16 boys with a win ahead of two Queenslanders Brendan Abel and Ryan Faux (Mackay) in second and third respectively.

Looking on from the sideline was Perth's high performance squad member, Nicole Callisto(Beechboro, Perth). Callisto is expected to return to racing soon following knee surgery.

The second round of the Hog's Breath Cafe National Probikx Series will be run on Sunday between 10 am and 12 noon also at the Soutside BMX Club track at Medina.
