30/01 Let's kiss and make up

by Shane Jenkins
In 2007 BMX Victoria ran a State Series "because that's what the riders wanted". It seems that the riders didn't want it at all, it was poorly supported.

I am old school. When I started racing in 1982 there were two associations in Australia, they were totally seperate and independant of each other, but that's when the number of registered riders was at it's peak. Through the early 80's race meetings would pull 800 riders and nationals would pull 2000 (and that's not including pre-titles or probikx/champbikx to fudge the numbers), club races back then would draw more riders than most open meetings on the Victorian calendar these days.

We are a long way since those days with numbers on the slide ever since, BMX racing has seen a couple of small spikes in growth but certainly nothing significant in the past 10 years.

Other sports like Australian rules Football have multi million dollar campaigns to recruit youngsters into their sport from a very early age, on a shoe string budget BMX Australia has put together a come and try day, it has shown success, but how can our sport possibly compete?

I think we face two problems, gaining new riders is certainly one, but retention of existing riders should be a high priority. How do you maintain their interest? Try different things. Don't just put the same old thing on every single weekend and expect people to just keep going. It wont take long for them to get bored. Things like taking all day to run a race meeting that can be run in a few hours is more important than people think. People put a whole lot more value on their time these days, so if they could spend all day at a BMX track to race and only get a few laps will they do that or will they chose to hit up a track for an hour or two then do other things with the remainder of the day?

I would like to be proven wrong, but it's my understanding that Gavin D from www.xbr.com.au could have presented a race series to BMX Victoria, but it would have fallen on deaf ears. Frustrated, Gavin set out to run it anyway. Now, as the event nears, there are all sorts of accusations and threats going around.

People, this is BMX a sport that I am passionate about as I am sure you are, if someone has a good idea it's time to listen. All personal feelings aside you can't afford not to.

I think it's time for BMX Victoria and XBR to sit down together and work things out. I mean now! At least try to work together. The Victorian State Series was a bit of a flop last year, let's give XBR a try. What is there to lose? I know there is a lot bigger buzz around the track about the XBR Autumn series, but I would hate to see the low numbers we already have in our state divided up even more. If I was forced to make a choice I would support the XBR series over the Victorian State Series.

Let's put all differences aside and make this work together.

30/01 ABA BMX and Fire Magic Premium Grills announce the 2008 Fire Magic Grill-off Series

ABA press release
Fire Magic Grill-off Series:
The American Bicycle Association and ABA National Series Sponsor Fire Magic Premium Grills are excited to announce the 2008 Fire Magic Grill-off Series heating up a national race event near you. Competition is open to all individuals, groups and teams in attendance and will take place on Day One (Saturdays) at nine (9) designated outdoor national race events throughout the season. To enter, participants are required to prepare on-site, and with their own equipment, an outdoor grill recipe of their choice and submit a prepared sample with written recipe and recipe name before the end of that day’s second qualifying round. Entries will be judged based upon taste, presentation and originality of name, with the day’s top five (5) finalists being entered into a random drawing to win one of the most innovative, finest outdoor grills on the market today—the all-new Fire Magic Aurora A530s (A530s-1E1N-62 / stand-alone model) or A530i (A530i-1E1N / built-in model) worth a retail value of $4,573.00 and $2,844.00 respectively. With a list of incredible features, including industry-best cast stainless steel burners that are guaranteed for life, the A530s—like every Fire Magic Grill—burns hotter and cooks better than any grill you have every owned—unless, of course, it’s been a Fire Magic.

There is no cost to enter and participants can enter as many unique recipes, in as many of the Grill-off competitions as they choose. ABA and Fire Magic reserve the right to select the judge(s) and all recipes will be anonymously submitted to the judge(s) for top five (5) selection and inclusion in a random drawing for that day’s award, with a Fire Magic grill being awarded prior to the start of that day’s main event. Entrants must be present to win and can choose from either the stand-alone or built-in models—which will be available for pick-up from a Fire Magic dealer in your area sometime before December 31, 2008. Sales tax on all awards will be the responsibility of the winners. Previous grill winners will not be eligible for future events.

Likewise, every non-winning recipe entered throughout the course of the Fire Magic Grill-off Series will automatically be entered into a random drawing at the Friday Night PRO Spectacular/NAG 5 Challenge event at the Grand Nationals in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with the winner taking home a Fire Magic A530s or A530i. 29/01 Warragul's last bash

by bmxultra.com
The Warragul BMX Club will host a Royal Children's Hospital fundraiser on Sunday 17th Feb.

With the council building a bike path for the locals which is planned to go right through a couple of the corners of the track this could be your last chance to ride the track in it's current form. Six man gate, flat corners, short straights and a single jump per straight are just some of the reasons this track has a huge cult following.

When the path goes in everything will change. They will put in an 8 lane gate and a more modern style race track. If you are an old schooler and keen to have a crack but aren't licenced the organisers are planning on putting on a novelty event just for you.

Ok, so it's not the last bash at Warragul, but it will never be the same (this track should have been heritage listed), make sure you don't miss out on the fun.

For further information download the entry form from the bmxultra.com race calendar.

29/01 NBL Coyote Nationals and UCI North American Event - Goodyear, AZ

Double A Marketing press release
The 2008 NBL season kicked off this past weekend in Goodyear, Arizona. What may now be the premier NBL Track, the Estrella Mountain Track, was a pure test of speed and skill. This track features some of the best berms and rhythm sections that the Pros have raced upon in many years. Things kicked off for the Elite men on Friday with round #8 of the UCI North American Series and then moved on to the first NBL Pro Series event, The NBL War of the Stars, on Saturday. Due to rain the race was canceled on Sunday and NBL rules call for Saturdays results to be doubled. Great news for the Double A Marketing Pros as they finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 6th! Here is how each rider finished up:

Kyle Bennett has had an incredible past season and it looks like he has no signs of slowing down anytime soon. The leader of the USA UCI points will be the only automatic pick to be named to Team USA and get to race at the Olympics. Kyle knows the easiest way to get to the Olympics is to be that rider. Since winning the Worlds, Kyle has been an unstoppable force in the UCI events and currently has a huge lead. On Friday, Kyle added an another important win at the UCI event and has stretched his UCI North American points lead event further. Kyle didn't stop there, as he also won the NBL Elite Main event on Saturday. Chalk up 3 wins for Kyle and a the start of what could be another NBL #1 title and a shot at the 2008 Olympic Games.
Kyle's Sponsors include Free Agent, FLY Racing, UGP, Shimano, GO211.com, Bombshell, Sun Ringle, Kenda, Thomson, KHS, S & M bars, Cyto Sport, ORP, Powerbar, and BMXpros.com

Randy Stumpfhauser looked to be the one rider who was going to dethrone Kyle in Goodyear, as his incredible first strait away power had the fans on their toes watching the race action come main event time. On Friday, Randy lead the main event until a small bobble in the rhythm section cost him dearly. Randy went from 1st to 4th in the blink of an eye. That is how tough Elite/AA Pro racing is. Randy came back to take 2nd on Saturday, giving him 2 2nd places in the NBL record books.
Randy's sponsors include GT Bicycles, Bombshell, ODI, Tangent, Fly Racing, Sinz, Shimano, GO211.com, OGIO, Cyto Sport, Power Bar, SDG, and BMXPros.com

Cristian Becerine is one of the most consistent riders on the Pro circuit and Goodyear was another prime example. On Friday, Cristian was in the UCI Elite Men's main event but placed an uncharacteristic 7th overall. Cristian came back strong on Saturday and wound up 3rd in the main event. 3 great main event scores and another weekend of fun and keeping the fans pumped keeps Cristian as one of the top riders on the Free Agent World Team.
Cristian's sponsors include Free Agent, KHS, Fly Racing, SINZ, Kenda, THE Products, ODI, Sun Ringle, Shimano, Powerbar, Cyto Sport, S & M bars, OGIO, Thomson, and BMXpros.com

Danny Caluag, the 2007 ABA #1 AA and Pro Cruiser rider, joined the Double A Marketing squad just days before Goodyear and to celebrate, he wanted to go out and get another great result. On Saturday, Danny was in the Elite Men's main event and he finished 6th place. Danny was looking for more wins, like the 2 AA Pro wins he took at the ABA Season opener just 2 weeks ago. Danny's next chance will be at the ABA Guthrie, Oklahoma National at the end of this week.
Danny's sponsors include Intense BMX, Bawls Gurana, FLY Racing, Shimano, THE Products, OGIO, SINZ, Go211.com, Group D, Oakley, Thomson, Intense Tyre Systems, Cyto Sport, and BMXpros.com

We all at Double A Marketing want to send out a get well soon to Jason Carnes and Dave Miller.

Double A Marketing is the original and premier BMX Racing Sports Marketing agency in the world. We proudly represent Cristian Becerine, Kyle Bennett, Danny Caluag, and Randy Stumpfhauser. 28/01 bsx2008: the last installment

words by bmxultra.com/photos by Gavin D @ www.xbr.com.au
Pro Open women

There were only 3 girls up for BSX this year. Australian Elite Champion Tanya Bailey, World Elite #2 (out of New Zealand) Sarah Walker and rising star Lauren Reynolds. The standard elimination format really only works with a minimum of 8 riders, so the girls devised a nice little system. They would race 3 rounds, each riding in both left and right lane and against each other once. The times from their two runs would be totaled and the two fastest riders would ride in a final.

First up were Sarah and Lauren. Sarah got to a handy lead and it was just as well. Lauren hit the inside last corner a little hot and shot to the outside bailing mid flight landing on her feet but then fell forward against a small tree which was off the side of the track. She got up right away with a big smile on her face, a little embarrassed, and brushed herself off. Lauren admitted to having a lot of fun, but decided to save herself for racing the big track at the rest of Track Attack. Down to two girls Tanya and Sarah would have a best of three.

Race 1: Sarah was in the left lane, Tanya in the right. Tanya looked to have some trouble around the outside first corner and Walker broke away to take the win.
Race 2: Tanya had the right lane this time, it was a closer race but Sarah took another win.
Race 3: Sarah was in the right lane for this run, is was fairly even down the first straight. Sarah over cooked it going into the inside third corner which allowed Tanya to get a nice lead and take the win.

Tanya, Sarah and Lauren seemed to have so much fun with it that I have a feeling that we will have a whole bunch of women racing next year.

30 & Over Open Wheel
The 30 & Over Open wheel class at BSX has grown somewhat since the first BSX. 2006 there were 4 competitors, 2007 there were 8, and 2008 even more with 12 riders, four were eliminated in the time trials.

Quarter finals
Simon Anderson in the left lane, with Simon Trewin in the right. Trewin was keeping up with Anderson but over jumped the third straight and went over the top of the the third corner. It was allover for Trewin.
Jade McPherson in the left lane Brian Alexander in the right. Brian got the snap on his Quadangle complete with Tuffs, but Jade was much faster in the last half of the track and took the win.
Jamie Bullows was in the right lane and up against Chris Van Winden in the left. Bullows took the low road through the first straight and it cost him, he was unable to make up the ground and was eliminated.
Shane Jenkins in the left lane with Mark Dobson in the right. Dobbo, on the cruiser, challenged Shane the whole way to the line, but just missed out. Shane going through to the next round.

Semi finals
Simon in the left lane with Chris in the right. When the gate dropped the two got even snap but Anderson carried more speed through to the first corner and raced away with the win.
Jade in the left lane with Shane in the right. Shane got the snap Jade had it all wound up at the last corner but had to drop the foot to get around. Jenkins pulled up next to him but missed out by mere inches.

Finals
Shane took the right lane Chris in the left. Jenkins got the snap and won it from start to finish, to take third place.
Simon in the left lane Jade in the right. Jade got the lead into the first corner but dropped the back wheel into the loose stuff and washed off some speed. By the half way point Jade looked to be making up ground, but nose bonked the last jump into the third corner, he lost his pedals and fell. Anderson was out in front when he realised that Jade was down, he turned around to check on his competitor. Anderson went on to take the win for the second year in a row.

Pro Open
From 32 riders we were down to just four. The two early favourites were still in the running, but as history will show, anything can happen on a track like this.

Semi finals
Josh Callan in the left lane up against Michael Young. Young got the snap, but Callan wound the bike up and won by a comfortable margin.
Billy Jolliffe in the left lane up against Alex Cameron. Alex looked to get the snap, Billy took a narrow win but the two collided and hit the ground after the finish line, they were both back on their feet pretty quick.

Finals
In the battle for third and fourth Michael was in the left lane and up against Alex. Michael got the snap but Alex got to the first corner first. He seemed to have a nice lead but Michael got around the inside of the last corner faster and pulled up right next to Alex. Not a bad effort, but it wasn't quite enough, Alex took the third.

The much anticipated final match up between Jolliffe and Callan didn't disappoint the crowd. The two were neck and neck down the first straight. They pulled up even again at the half way point. Callan may have had a slight advantage, but there wasn't much in it. The two entered the last corner even and were elbow to elbow right to the line. Josh Callan took the win by just four 100ths of a second.

Both Josh and Billy were heard saying they would return for bsx2009.

We have a new king of BSX, will Josh be able to defend the crown next year? Will Luke Madill be back in 2009 to reclaim his crown? Will Billy Jolliffe be able to improve on his two second place finishes? Will Tiger Robinson return to see if he can take the win after taking out the fastest time in 2007. Or will Daniel Johnston cause an upset? Maybe Michael Young and Alex Cameron have had a sniff at finals glory and they will return next year to make a bigger impact?

XBR XPRESSION winners
Here are the XPRESSION WINNERS (XBR's dirt jumping competition). Gavin D decided to go for FOUR WINNERS.  Each of these guys will win an 8x12 PRINT but they need to contact XBR at editor@xbr.com.au with their postal or collection details.

The auctions
The auctions at the end of the day are even more hotly contested than the racing. Especially the number plate auction. As riders are eliminated they hand their plate in signed and we sell them off. Josh Callan and SImona Anderson's plates went for the most amount of money this year at $50 each.

Here's the list of plates that sold for $20 or more.

Josh Callan $50
Simon Anderson 50
Billy Jolliffe 30
Luke Pretlove 30
Sarah Walker 30
Michael Young 25
Tom Siinmaa 25
Levi Collins 22
Michael Chasteauneuf 20
Brandan Bullows 20
Jhy Denholm 20
Jesse Van Vugt 20
Todd Guyers 20
Tanya Bailey 20
Shane Jenkins 20
Adam Carey 20

Other awesome items that went up for the Auction were some Answer Carbon bars, a fox Rampage Helmet, Khalen Young's Aussie team jersey that he used at the French UCI SX race, a GT jersey signed by Luke Madill and so much more. Make sure you don't miss out next year.

Thanks for supporting bsx2008 and the Royal Children's Hospital
I must thank each and everyone who helped make bsx2008 a success. There are so many names so I won't try to name them all. There were some people that put in an extraordinary effort that I will point out though.

Special thanks:

Craig Merritt, from Dirt Designs, is not only a big supporter from the start of BSX, providing the t-shirts and number plates, he is also a co-founder of the whole BSX concept of running a backyard race and raising money for the fantastic community service that the Royal Children's Hospital provide.

Andrew Hepburn of Safe and Sound production services is also a big supporter of BSX since the beginning, providing the scaffolding for the video as well as the music and sound equipment for the day.

Gavin D from XBR covered the public liability insurance costs, helped promote the event and supplied transponders which proved invaluable on the day. Helping to keep racing running through quickly, smoothly and above all accurately. Don't forget to check out www.xbr.com.au for photos and video clips from BSX.

Tracy for spending endless hours organising everything that happens off the track on the big day.

There are two guys who have spent a lot of time helping get the track and it's surrounds prepared for the event. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Levi Barnett and Chris Van Winden for their help. I really appreciate it.

Thanks

To all our partners a very special thanks to you all, without your generosity it would be impossible for us to raise money for the RCH.

To the riders thank you for your support and putting on a great show without you there certainly wouldn't be BSX.

To the volunteers thank you for all your help, no matter how big or small. You were able to hold the fort and keep everything running according to plan.

To the spectators thanks for coming along. Despite the costs and travel outside of the Melbourne metro area we manage to pull nice numbers and it's great to see the same faces year after year. Don't forget to start saving for next years event. There will be more raffles and auctions and awesome prizes.

Oh and thanks to the Bendigo BMX club for supplying the use of the gate for the day, and the Knox BMX Club for the donation of the plastic to cover the track.

Keep an eye out for more bsx2008 photos and video, coming soon. See you at bsx2009.

25/01 bsx2008: elimination highlights

by Shane Jenkins/bmxultra.com
Pro Open Round 1 highlights
Levi Collins has been amongst the fastest riders at the BSX the first two years but got a little loose in the corners during his timed run this year and drew fastest qualifier Josh Callan in round one. It was a close race but Levi had to watch the rest of the racing from the sidelines.
Michael Chasteauneuf qualified a respectable fifth in the time trial and drew Adam Shields (ranked 21) in his first race. It looked like it would be a formality however Chasty dropped the bike at his first ever BSX and it was game over for him.
Canadian Mischa Partridge (ranked 11) drew Adam Carey (ranked 27), Adam got the snap and won it from start to finish, Mischa could start packing early for his long trip home.
Brandan Bullows (ranked 10) put in a great timed run and looked like he was an easy qualifier for round 2, but it was Joe Hey (26) how would progress, Brandan would have to wait another year.

Pro Open Round 2 highlights
Michael Young (3) made an impact in practice wearing a skin tight Superman t-shirt. When it came to racing the t-shirt was replaced with his DK jersey and he was going to town on his competition, he knocked out Matt Dunsworth (13) in round 2.
Tom Siinmaa (7) has also shown great improvement on the little track over the past 12 months. He eliminated Dane Booker (31) in round 2.

Pro Open Quarter finals
Josh Callan continued on his winning ways when he met with Adam Shields in the quarters securing a semis berth.
Billy Jolliffe dominated his quarter against Nick Deininger and was only one lap away from the main.
Michael Young and Tom Siinmaa would make for a good match up, Young got the snap from the left lane Sinmaa drew even by the half way mark, but Young manged to get more pedals in through the last half of the track to take the win.
Brock Tuckerman in the left lane up against Alex Cameron. Cameron got the better first straight. Tuckerman drew even by half way but couldn't maintain his speed around the tight last corner, Cameron for the win.

That's it for this installment. More about the 30 & Over open wheel, Pro women and the rest of the Pro open coming soon.

25/01 ABA PRO Standings through Silver Dollar Nationals- Reno, NV.

ABA press release
The American Bicycle Association hosted the Silver Dollar Nationals this past weekend, January, 11-13 in Reno, NV. The weather was a little rough leading up to the event this year with about 10 feet of snow coming in to the Reno area, but the Reno crew always does a great job on the track and facility and the event went off without a hitch!

The racing at the Silver Dollars event was second to none! ABA BMX stepped it up in the track department and Billy Allen built a very challenging track to kick off the season. This was the first event of the year and Reno in January has turned into the Anaheim 1 SX of BMX racing. All the big sponsor changes, the new uniforms, the new numbers, the new ABA Champions roll into the event center. It really is a site to see!

With 2008 being the debut Olympic year for BMX racing, the buzz is all around. There's lots of media on hand and many of the sports top athletes from around the world were on hand to take a shot at getting some much needed points towards the ABA BMX titles. Danny "Easy Money" Caluag picked up right were he left off from last season. Danny C. proved to everyone out there that his ABA National #1 AA PRO and PRO cruiser titles were no fluke. Danny took the win both days in the AA Pro class and backed that up with a 1st and 3rd in PRO Cruiser. Danny's new Team mate, and ABA BMX Rookie PRO, David Herman, was spotted on the ABA BMX PRO podium as well. David made the AA PRO main both days taking home a 2nd and 3rd for the week. I have to give a shout out to the Aussie Haro rider, Khalen Young as well. Khalen made for an exciting photo finish at the line on for Saturday's overall AA win. Only to nipped at the line by Danny C. One things for sure after Reno, Khalen looks to be a solid ABA BMX PRO Title contender this season!

On the Ladies side ABA National #1 Girl and Girl Cruiser Champion, Dominique Daniels, made her PRO debut. Dominique continued to impress taking home the victory on Saturday. "Triple D" had some problems on Sunday and had to sit out the mains. Stephanie Barragan really turned some heads in Reno as well. Stephanie picked a very solid 2nd on Saturday and took the win on Sunday. Not to be out done, Terra Nichols looked strong and took up her spots on the podium for the weekend. The new crop of ladies PRO's looks to be a great addition to the class. I can hardly wait to see who ends up the champ this year!

Pro Cruiser was the Danny C. and Pauly Lange show these two battled hard all last year for the overall ABA Title with Danny C. coming out on top. Paulie seems to have a new focus with his new Redman sponorship. Paulie's been close so many times, and this could be his year. Danny C., Tyler brown, and Kenth Fallen will all have a say about that in the end.

Vet Pro was a heck of a show in Reno. Most thought it would be the year of Dale domination. But reno, being Reno, there was another addition to the Vet PRO class. Kenth Fallen showed up and took the win on day one showing he's got the speed he needs for the title. Being the crafty veteran Dale is, he stepped it back up on Sunday and took the top honors back. Both Kenth and Dale put on a great show for the fans and it was definitely the class to watch in Reno. Chad Street continues to be the solid rider he is. Chad is always a threat for the VET win at most every race. He's always right in the points mix. Chad is due for some BIG wins this year. Defending Champ "Black Jack" Jason Carne$ looked a little off in Reno, but being a six-time Champ he knows what he needs to do to put himself back in the hunt.

The ABA would like to thank all the participants, families, teams, sponsors, and BMX industry for helping make the Dacono, CO. event such a huge success!

24/01 bsx2008: times

by Shane Jenkins/bmxultra.com
At bsx2007 we were faced with a damp track after heavy rainfall the night before, and as everyone knows a clay surface and water makes for a slippery track. The track dried out and the rest is history. Since then we have bought a number of covers to protect the first half of the track from rain.

Fast forward to the morning of Monday January 21, 2008. bsx2008 would again face heavy rainfall in the lead up to the event, around 100mm. This time we were more prepared, the whole track had been covered. A shout out to the guys at the Knox BMX club for supplying enough plastic to cover the last half of the track and a big thanks to Stewart Kelly for running a late night mission and going about 100kms out of his way to drop it off.

There were a couple of people who were very early to arrive at the track, they got there before most of the volunteers, so we had to move them along while we got set up.

When the gates opened at 11am the track was ready to race and the sun was starting to shine through the clouds. During the 2 hours of practice riders seemed to be having a bit of fun, you could see as time went on and the track continued to harden up the riders were just getting quicker and quicker.

Since the track had been covered in stages starting from the gate it went from fast and dry to slower with some boggy bits, if you were to go off the race line, through the last half. This made for a challenge come time trials time. Anyone who has raced at BSX will tell you that a small mistake is very costly.

There were a few minor changes to the track over the past twelve months, they were mostly to improve the speed and the flow of the track and seemed to work pretty well.

Times

With a transponder system in place, thanks to XBR, the accuracy of the timing was down to 1/1000th of a second, and time trials as well as the racing would run through a lot quicker.

Pro open men

There were a lot of big named riders out injured, or ill. Luke Madill was resting a chest injury and wouldn't be able to attempt the three-peat.
Josh Callan pulled the fastest time for the day with a 20.83, just 0.13 of a second ahead of Billy Jolliffe. 14 year old Brandan Bullows was a real surprise package, he pulled a time of 22.24 which put him in the top 10. Luke Pretlove and Canada's Mischa Partridge pulled the exact same times in the time trial. We hadn't planned for this, and an extra timed run seemed like an option, but we asked the guys and decided a rock-paper-scissors competition would be fair. Luke Pretlove won 3 time and chose the number 12 spot allowing Mischa to take number 11. (We are going to have to formalise something just in case this were to happen again in the future.)
A number of guys struggled with the low and tight corners and were lucky that the top 32 would make the cut since there were only 32 riders in the class.

The ladies were once again posting times that were competitive when compared with the pro open men. All three of them would have finished in the top 32 of pro open had the classes been combined as they were last year. Sarah Walker and Lauren Reynolds seemed to be enjoying their first outing at BSX, and Tanya looked to be cutting some mean times.

Simon Anderson was flying again at BSX, having won in 2007, he looked the favourite again for 2008, but Jade McPherson could be a spoiler. NSW's Bruce Watman was a favourite for the final but that ended when he crashed out in the time trial. SA's Dale Saunders and NT's Jason Eecen also fell victim to the tight and technical track.

I have to admit that doing a timed run in front of 150 people is a little daunting, especially when you are first up, something that I personally haven't done before. I would normally enter late to go last. I don't know if the crowd was wanting to see a fast time or a big crash, so when the gate dropped it was just as simple as trying to get to the line without a crash. Everything went to plan until I drifted wide on the exit of the third corner and headed for a soft edge of a jump, it pulled me up pretty quick, lucky I have a bit of weight behind me, I think it helped me plough through the mud and back on my merry way, but at a cost.

That's it for now. More about bsx2008 soon.

24/01 Team Showdown in Goodyear, AZ

NBL press release
This weekend is shaking up to be a battle royale, as teams from all over the US make their way to the Coyote National at Estrella Mtn. BMX in Goodyear, AZ.  The Coyote National is awarding a double team payout to its teams on Day 1 and that’s just a hint of all the excitement happening Jan. 25th-27th.

After the Christmas Classic, team Intense/Phantom/Ontrac was setting the standard of the early season for the National Teams.  But not far behind OFR/Cyaa and Dan’s Comp were battling to take over the lead.  However, all were not expecting Factory Felt to make a stealthy climb to the top at the Blue Ridge Mtn. National in Virginia.  As for Team NBL the 2007 Championship Title winners, VBS-Kenda, were already gaining their spot atop the charts.  The Classic proved to be a cake walk for the team as they built their lead over Geared For It and Audiobahn/justgobmx.com.

The Coyote National is just one of three Western Nationals this season giving many the opportunities to head to the top of the National Series standings.  Also, be looking for more, Western race action at the Pacific Nationals at Whittier Narrows BMX Apr. 5th-6th and the Golden State Nationals at Manzanita Park BMX Jun. 21st-22nd.

23/01 Kiwis kick start the Olympic campaign in Melbourne

BMX Australia press release
New Zealanders, Sarah Walker and Marc Willers claimed victory in the sixth BMX UCI Oceania Rounds in Melbourne today. In what was a New Zealand white wash the pair secured their respective leads in the overall series. Light rain did not deter the pair who now have their sight squarely focused on a potential spot at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Walker, currently ranked number one on the UCI world rankings, won all three races to take out round six. Local favourite, Ziggy Callan (Lilydale), gave early challenger, Krystal Cranfield (Gladstone/Brisbane) a run for her money. Callan also edged out Melissa Mankowski (Moranbah) to take second place with Mankowski in third. Walker now stays in the lead of the Oceania Series with only 4 races remaining. Ziggy Callan is determined to perform her best as the 19 year old tries to make an impression on selectors with eye on this year's Beijing Olympics. Third was Queensland's Melissa Mankowski and Cranfield placed a creditable fourth.

It was a guessing game in the elite men's race when final winner, Marc Willers, surged ahead in the final straight. A challenge was put out by strong start by Queensland’s Jared Graves (Toowoomba). Willers fought back to secure the lead on the final turn. A strong challenge in the final straight came from Australia's top ranked Luke Madill (Penrith). Willers won by a tyre with Madill in second and Graves gaining third. Willers now stays in the lead in the UCI Oceania series while Madill maintains second in the series.

With nations and individuals keen to gain precious UCI points for rankings, the competition in the Oceania rounds is fierce. Nations need to be in the top 4 for men and the top 5 for women to take the maximum number of riders of three men and two women to the first Olympic Games for BMX in Beijing in August.

In the junior women's race a strong ride by Townsville's Rachel Bracken saw her win with New Zealand's Victoria Hill in second and national series leader Lauren Reynolds (Bunbury) in third.

In the junior men's race it was an unlucky crash for Victorian Michael Chasteauneuf (Eastfield) on the final berm that let strong Adelaide rider Sam Willoughby( (Happy Valley) claim victory. Some elbow action in the second turn sorted out the leaders until Chasteneauneuf touched Willoughby’s rear tyre. Fellow Victorian team-mate of Chasteauneuf's, Joshua Callan (Lilydale), rose to the occasion and placed second with Luke Lodema (Happy Valley) from Adelaide in third.

In the Hog’s Breath Café Champbikx division it was Victorian rider Matthew Dunsworth (Knox) who took the win while women’s winner was world number one Melinda Mc:Leod (Mackay).

Adam Shields gave Mackay another win in the 15 boys. Adelaide’s Zain Ariffin (Happy Valley) claimed the 14 boys while Queensland’s Chelsea King (Nerang) secured the girls win.

Riders continue this week in the Track Attack Series in Melbourne with the next two rounds of the Oceania Series to be held in New Zealand on 16-17 February. The final two rounds of the UCI Oceania will be in Penrith, Sydney on the 8-9 March.

18/01 bsx2008: webcam, rain and roadworks

bmxultra.com press release
bsx2008 Monday January 21, gates open at 11am

Webcam
As per previous years we will be setting up a webcam for bsx2008. The intention, is to put it track side, but if it looks like it could rain. In the case of rain the webcam will be set up undercover, so if you cant see much you should still be able to hear what's going on. We'll post the address for the webcam over the weekend.

Rain
Rain is expected over the coming days, and after last year we are now quite prepared for it. We have covers that will protect the first half of the track. I just need to source some more plastic, so if any of you know where I can get some cheap rolls of plastic about 50m long and 4m wide let me know. We should have a dry track for Monday, or at least the first half anyway. I will let the track take some water as it's very dry right now but it will be covered between tonight and Monday.

There are roadworks that may effect some of you. If you were intending to use the winding alpine style road with sheer cliffs, etc, made famous by the BMXpress article last year that goes from St Andrews to Kinglake. It's closed for roadworks.

18/01 Lautier's Kuwahara score

by bmxultra.com
Last year, late November, at the Victorian State Championships at Park Orchards we organised an old school gathering and invited people to bring out their old school bling to show off in the pro shop area. It went down a treat and we had a whole bunch of bikes there. The Kuwahara frame that was up for grabs worked beautifully as an incentive, but something makes me think that those guys don't need an incentive to show off their gear.

Anyway all the people that participated received a raffle ticket and it was Joe Lautier who scored the limited edition Kuwahara Laserlite replica. Standing with Joe in the photo is Julian Millis who is the mastermind behind the Kuwahara product line. Now that is a sweet looking ride, last I heard from Joe he was sourcing parts to build it up. Congrats Joe and thanks to Kuwahara/ECI for supporting the gathering.

18/01 BMX Supercross causes challenges for Adelaide

BMX Australia press release
BMX is the latest sport to join the growing list of new-generation Olympic events in Beijing. This April, just five months before the August games, Adelaide will host the first BMX Supercross in the southern hemisphere. Supercross is akin to the Olympic style of track, a BMX track of monstrous size. Apart from being the first southern hemisphere supercross, this will also be the first time such an event has been held indoors.

It's been in the pipeline since mid 2006 when the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) confirmed that Australia would host the 2008 World Cup Supercross and the 2009 World Championships. Now the track design for the World Cup BMX Supercross in Adelaide has been finalized all of the BMX Olympic hopefuls are keen to know what it will feel like to race on it.

Unfortunately they will have to wait for the Jubilee Hall in the Adelaide Showgrounds to be transformed just days before racing starts on April 12th and 13th. For organizers though building the first indoor BMX Supercross track is not without several major challenges. Right now there is only a concrete floor and track builders will have to truck in thousands of tonnes of dirt, a couple of bobcats and plenty of elbow grease.

The track design is the brainchild of Tom Ritzenthaler, the UCI's BMX track builder. It was only after inspection and detailed measurements were taken that the final design was formed. According to BMX Australia's organiser, John Leary, the design did need fine-tuning. "It had to take into account the building's unique features such as roof height which did not allow an eight metre start ramp. The start ramp will be seven metres."

As someone said, 'What's a metre between friends?'

There were obstacles like the columns and other inbuilt features that could not be changed.

According to those it in the know, the track will be challenging for the elite men and women from overseas as well as from Australia.

For those Australian riders who fancy themselves for an Olympic berth when the sport debuts in August, it will certainly cut the mustard.

"It will be great not having to travel overseas. The Australian riders have always had to travel long distances to compete in Europe and America. This time around the shoe is on the other foot," said Luke Madill, a member of Australia's BMX High Performance Squad.

I perform better on home surfaces and in front of home crowds.”

There were many more considerations for the track design that do not meet the eye. "The track design itself has to consider all the risk management requirements," Leary added.

When the BMX UCI track builder and committee visited Adelaide in November they rechecked measurements and really looked at the building in fine detail.  The indoor track will be great for riders, spectators and for the sport's profile within Australia and overseas."

The biggest bonus is that rain or adverse weather will not affect anything. As recently as September last year the Supercross racing in Salt Lake City had to be cancelled due to rain.

Another major challenge that faces the organizing committee in Adelaide is the logistics of building an indoor track in the extremely short time of only three days.

The challenge means the entire track has to be built and ready for practice on Friday 11 April followed by racing on the 12th and 13th April.

As if that is not enough challenge, the amazing thing is that the Supercross and massive start ramp will all be changed around in just 24 hours into a national standard BMX track ready for all ages to compete at the National Championships.

"When racing is completed on Sunday it has to be changed in record time," Leary said. "Riders need to be on the track well before Wednesday for the Adelaide Showground Spectacular."

The Adelaide Showground Spectacular is known in BMX circles as the pre-titles and holds a lot of interest for riders with an added bonus of  national plates up for grabs over the remainder of the week.

“The Adelaide BMX Supercross would not be happening without the support of major partner, Events South Australia,” stated Leary. “There has been a phenomenal amount of team work with local Event Manager, Darrilyn Woods, plus the manpower on hand from South Australia’s BMX community.”

The official National Championships get underway on Thursday 17th April and racing continues until Sunday 20th April.

17/01 bsx2008: parking/DVDs

bmxultra.com press release
Just 4 days until BSX2008, and I have to admit I am getting nervous, it's been a long 12 months since the last BSX, but these last couple of weeks have gone by in a flash and I am in a permanent state of thinking I might have forgotten something. We have the track, toilets...all the essentials sorted, now we just have to get the riders and spectators there and the event will go off like a frog in a sock!

Parking
click to zoomOne of the complaints from neighbours last year was about parking, apparently cars were blocking driveways and parked too close to the road (which is arguable - but we were fined last year). So to ensure we could obtain a planning permit from the council for running the event we had to devise a parking plan. It's pretty simple really, just follow the 3 parking attendants and you will be required to park close to each other to maximise the use of space we have allocated for parking. Now what will happen if people don't stick to the parking plan is that we won't be allowed to run the event in the future, so please do what the parking attendants tell you. If you must park on the street, please park on one of the side streets, they are literally 100m each side of the venue so it's not a big walk.
Please take a look at the parking plan to see what we are trying to achieve, it will allow us to park people quickly on Monday.
Oh and please don't block our drive way we need to allow for emergency vehicles should they be required. If a volunteer asks you to move your car please do as you are asked.

DVDs
We have a bunch of BSX2006 and BSX2007 DVDs if anyone is interested, I will take them along to Park Orchards and they will be available at bsx2008. They are $20 each. Of which $10 per DVD will be donated to the Royal Children's Hospital.

16/01 Vics avoid Probikx / Champbikx

by bmxultra.com
This email came in last night:
Interim entry list for the UCI / Probikx / Champbikx at Park Orchards attached for you to play spot the Victorian. Please note that if you know of any one interested in flying the Victorian flag and not on the list, I will take entries up until close of registration at Park Orchards at 7pm Friday night.

I had a look at the entry list myself thinking it can't be all that bad, surely there would be a whole bunch of Victorian's racing UCI / Probikx / Champbikx at a round at Park Orchards. If there was a class offered to me I know I would be there for sure. So why is it that Victorian's aren't riding it? Was it not publicised enough? Was the entry form too difficult to find? Are Track Attack entries killing the budget? The Victorian State Championships wouldn't be as competitive as this event, has that got some of the Victoria's best ducking for cover? Whatever the reason might be put it behind you folks and enter, let's show the rest of the country that Victoria wants to have a round of the series in the future and that Victoria is a force to be reckoned with.

14/01 Adelaide Supercross Track

by bmxultra.com
Is it just me or have other people picked up on the visual error in the 3D model of the Supercross track set to be built for Adelaide in April? It's been known for some time that the track will be built indoor, however when you look at the design it still has the massive start hill, which isn't likely to fit inside the roof of the indoor venue set ro be used for the Australian round of the UCI Supercross series. Another give away is the markings around the outside of the track area resemble a car park, much like the set up at San Jose. I have sent an email to BMX Australia asking about this on Friday, but so far no response. The track is subject to change, naturally, but it may be quite significant changes when going from outdoor to indoor given the greater restriction with space, especially when considering spectator space. Regardless of this the Adelaide round of the Supercross series will be the first of its kind in Australia and will bring the biggest names in BMX to the Australian BMX fans.

11/01 Fire Magic Premium Grills named “Official Outdoor Grill” of the 2008 ABA National BMX Series

ABA press release
Gilbert, Arizona — The American Bicycle Association (ABA) is proud to announce an exclusive association with Fire Magic Premium Grills to be named as the “Official Outdoor Grill” of the American Bicycle Association. The association will begin with the ABA Silver Dollar Nationals of BMX (Bicycle Motocross) held annually in Reno, Nevada. This year’s event will draw thousands of riders from around the world to compete for national standings. Fire Magic will launch its new affiliation by promoting the “Fire Magic Cook-Off Series” at selected ABA National events.

American designed and manufactured, Fire Magic grills have set the gold standard for outdoor cooking for more than 70 years now. An outdoor grill from its inception rather than an indoor appliance simply remade into a grill, Fire Magic grills are built to perform season after season and as such carry a lifetime warranty on many key components and a 15-year warranty on almost every other part. Truly, these are the finest grills in the world, combining sublime craftsmanship, superior technology and the very latest innovations in outdoor cooking technology. “A Fire Magic grill, however, creates more than great food”, explained Jerry Scott, Vice President of Marketing for The Robert H. Peterson Company, Fire Magic’s parent company. “As the essential centerpiece of a family’s outdoor lifestyle, Fire Magic creates great moments together. We call it The Magic Hour and it’s why we saw such a tremendous opportunity in teaming with the American Bicycle Association and the great family sport that is BMX racing.”

The sport of BMX is growing and building a great deal of interest as it prepares for a worldwide coming-out party of sorts with inclusion at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. “Fire Magic is an exciting new sponsor for the ABA and our National Event Series in 2008,” said BA Anderson, Vice President of the ABA. “We are very proud that Fire Magic Premium Grills has chosen to promote its products with the ABA members and the sport of BMX.”

The Fire Magic association means greater rewards for all the ABA older cruiser and expert classes. Riders in the selected classes will now not only be racing for National Rankings, they will also be competing for a Fire Magic Premium Grill. Top riders in each class will win a Fire Magic grill, details of the promotion will be listed in the next BMXer magazine. In addition to the top riders in each class winning a Fire Magic grill, Fire Magic will also be promoting the “Fire Magic Cook-Off Series” at selected ABA National events with the winner of that contest also receiving a Fire Magic Grill.

The ABA has made recent strides in adding both new sponsors to the sport of BMX, but also in establishing new marketing objectives that will increase awareness of the sport. New sponsors have become marketing partners that reach beyond the confines of previous affiliations. With BMX emerging as the newest of Olympic action sports in 2008, the ABA is poised for tremendous growth.

10/01 bsx2008: Return of the King

bmxultra.com press release
BSX is a unique event. It's a one-on-one flat pedal only BMX race, sprint trails style, with a twist. It was set up to add some fun to Track Attack (6 races in 8 days) an intense week of racing while raising money for the Royal Children's Hospital and the Kinglake West CFA (country fire authority). The event has raised nearly $10,000 for the RCH over the past two years!

BSX is a pro only event. The three classes available are Pro Open, Pro Women and 30 & Over open wheel. There is a $30 entry fee. Each of the classes are all self funded. The more riders the more money. And with a break down that goes like this 1st = 40%, 2nd = 30%, 3rd = 20%, 4th = 10%. The winners of BSX have taken away more money than any of the rounds of Track Attack, not too bad for a fun day!

Through the day there are auctions and raffles to raise money.

bsx2008 is on Monday January 21st at 55 Watsons Rd Pheasant Creek.
Gates open and practice commences at 11am.
Maps/directions available on the entry form.

Return of the King
One name that has become synonymous with BSX is Luke Madill. Luke has been one of Australia's most dominant pros since winning his first Australian senior elite crown in 1999. He was the youngest rider to ever have won the crown. His bike handling skills are highlighted by the BSX and must be seen to be believed. He's dominated BSX since the beginning, leaving the competition in his dust at both bsx2006 and bsx2007. Although in 2007 he had some very tough competition with Michael Robinson taking the fastest lap time in qualifying. Luke plans to return to BSX in 2008. The question is can Luke win it again? What started out as fun for him, and yes he still considers it fun, may be just as much pressure as any other race. Luke is just one of many riders who puts on a show for the spectators each year at BSX.

10/01 23rd Annual Christmas Classic and President’s Cup

NBL press release
The Greater Columbus Convention Center was packed with thousands of BMX fans and spectators and it was even more filled with the buzz of one of the greatest NBL National events.  The Christmas Classic and President’s Cup are always alive with anticipation and excitement and this year was no exception.  With the combination of these two events and the addition of the UCI Continental races, race fans were supplied with the ultimate dose of race action to cure their cabin fever.

Race action commenced with Thursday’s President’s Cup, over 30 states battled for the ultimate title.  Ohio had a lot to prove as last year’s Cup winners, but Florida wasn’t going to give up with out a fight.  However, Michigan surprised everyone with a solid day of racing, proving to all that they were a force to be reckoned with.  In the end it was Michigan who proved triumphant, followed by the always intimidating Florida, and Illinois in a strong third place.

President’s Cup Top 5

  1. Michigan
  2. Florida
  3. Illinois
  4. California
  5. Ohio

Following the prestigious President’s Cup event, the Olympic hopefuls took to the track for the #6 UCI North American Continental race.  Riders were present from all over the US and the World to gain valuable ranking points.  Thursday’s event was full of awesome competition as the riders took to the track.  Taking home the points and the top prize was Free Agent’s Cristian Becerine, close behind was One Racing’s Arturs Matison, and Jason Rogers for third in the Elite Men.  Supercross’s Samantha Cools had the Elite Women’s class locked in and having an amazing day of racing, behind her was Redman’s Amanda Geving, and Germany’s Regula Runge.  Redline’s Denzel Stein and Formula’s Alise Post had no problems with their respective Junior classes, both had very solid wins Thursday.

Friday marked Day One of the 2007 Christmas Classic.  The Masters and Super-Ex joined the mix for the morning portion of racing.  The Super-Ex class was packed with awesome racing and competition.  Day One belonged to CJ McGuire.  The Master’s class definitely had the track ‘mastered’ come main time and with no surprise Redline’s Jason Carnes showing the young folks how it’s done with a great win for the day.

With help from GO211.com, over 7,500 unique visitors were able to view all the excitement of the Christmas Classic.  Featured along with the many other facets of actions sports, the Christmas Classic will be added and archived for many to view throughout the season.

The Elite Spectacular took over the Convention Center following Day One’s events.  It was an evening full of fun, games, prizes, and charity as the NBL donated food and cash to the Mid-Ohio Food Bank.  Spectators enjoyed #7 UCI North American Continental race action along with BocceBAWLS, Bowlin’BAWLS, Intense Build-a-Bike contest, and many other prizes and give-a-ways with help from BAWLS Guarana, Intense BMX, and the Columbus Blue Jackets.  The Elite Men added to the show with some great competition.  One Racing’s Maris Strombergs took off with a first place finish, followed by the World Champ, Free Agent’s Kyle Bennett, and the previous day’s winner Free Agent’s Cristian Becerine.  Supercross’s Samantha Cools brought home double wins this weekend, allowing her to move into the #1 UCI ranking position overall.  Coming in second again was Redmen’s Amanda Geving, and third was Redline’s Kim Hayashi.

To end the week, Day Two of the Christmas Classic began bright and early Saturday.  The Super-Ex were ready for action, Felt’s Matt Kelty would end on a good note with a win and it looked like Formula’s Tim Dinger wasn’t feeling a bit over 20 with a solid main event finish.  He brought home a win as well.

After a fantastic weekend of racing, families were ready to head home to celebrate the New Year and gear up for the next NBL Nationals.  Be sure to check out all the race action on the NBL website, nbl.org.  And look for us at your next race; January 13-14 Blue Ridge Mtn. 09/01 Save Knox Bowl from Demolition

Save Knox Bowl press release
The Knox City Council has earmarked the Knox bowl/skate-park (Lewis Park, Wantirna South, Victoria, Australia) for demolition in late January 2008.

The Council has made their decision based on a maintenance report and newly constructed bowl (Gilbert Park, Knoxfield). One of the most disturbing facts that have come to light is that the decision was reached in house; without consultation of the community or the facility’s active users.

The Knox bowl constructed in 1988-89, holds important historical significance to the skateboard and BMX cultures/communities. It has a worldwide unique design that includes heavily utilised features such as ‘transfer lines’, ‘spine’, ‘fly-outs’ and a ‘snake pit’ which are not incorporated in the new bowl (Gilbert Park).

The Knox bowl in its present state of existence is still the only best suited training ground for many champion BMX and skateboard riders (past and present) including Steve McCann - currently ranked 4th in the world for BMX riding.

Since the new bowl has been constructed (Gilbert Park, Knoxfield), the Knox bowl (Lewis Park) continues to still be heavily utilised on a daily basis by people of various age groups (youth and adults alike) making use of its unique features and tranquil location which are not present at the new facility.

The Council should be considering factors such as the population increase of users, the two locations, the choice that the participants can make, and of course the costs for maintenance and ongoing upkeep.

Please sign the petition to save Knox Bowl -

Thanks to Levi and Brian who came early to do some tweaks and a special thanks to Fletch for manning the brush cutter, as you can see from the photo below it's a big job. Fletch's 3 boys did a great job helping to roll the track in and get it fast and smooth. Thanks also to Brock and Kyle for their help and feedback, and as per usual thanks to Chris Van Winden for his help.

07/01 Graves wins UCI Oceania round 5

BMX Australia press release
Toowoomba BMX rider, Jared Graves has his sights set firmly on a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The 25 year old won the fifth round of the UCI Oceania Ranking Round on the Gold Coast today. Graves now gains valuable UCI points for Australia and himself which will improve Australia’s chances of taking the maximum number of men riders which is 3 to the 2008 Beijing Olympics if Australia remains in the top five nations.

After racing in mud in the previous round last night, Graves was relieved with better track conditions today.

“I had an absolute shocker yesterday,” declared Graves, “it wasn’t my day at all everything went wrong. I didn’t even make the semis. It’s awesome to come back and get a win.”

“I was committed into going into that first corner flat out. You’ve got to in the final. If you back off you’re not going to get anywhere.”

Graves made the winning move on the first turn and was challenged by two of his QAS (Queensland Academy of Sport) teammates Michael ‘Tiger’ Robinson and Kamakazi.

Graves still had concerns over the next three straights. “I was always worried with Kama behind me because he can pull out anything. He’s always someone you’ve got to worry about when he’s behind you,” explained Graves.

Robinson and Kamakazi rode shoulder to shoulder but finished in second and third place respectively. Top kiwi rider Mark Willers could not repeat his win from last night’s round in the muddy conditions and finished in fifth today. Sydney brothers Alex and  Matthew Cameron finished with fourth and seventh respectively. Penrith’s Luke Madill placed sixth and still in second place overall in the Oceania Ranking Series. Willers still leads the overall Oceania Series with the next round to be held in Melbourne in a fortnight.

After claiming third at the Beijing test event, Graves will now continue racing both mountain bike and BMX and will focus on the BMX Supercross events which start in Madrid next month.

The elite women’s race winner was left wide open until the last race with Queensland’s Melissa Mankowski (Moranbah) taking the final race and overall win

First place was welcomed by Mankowski who thought she had won the previous night’s round but  instead had placed second.

“I finished with a second last night. I came out with a bit better attitude today,” she said.

The elite women race for points over three races and close racing mean any three rider could take the eventual win in the third and final race.

“It came down to the last race which is good. That’s what the girls need," explained Mankowski..

The recent return to racing for Mankowski after injury at the Beijing test event was a positive sign. “Beijing does look a bit closer now,” she stated.

Second was third ranked on World rankings, Sarah Walker from New Zealand. Third today was Kelly Percy (Redlands) from Brisbane. Krystal Cranfield (Gladstone) made an early move but lost ground in the final straight while National Champion, Tanya Bailey (Maudsland/Perth) only managed sixth place.

New Zealand's Sarah Walker however still maintains the lead in the Oceania Series.

Selectors were on site to look at the Australian team. Also racing in the Oceania round were riders from Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand and Canada racing to gain experience and valuable points for their nations.

Local rider Stevie Janssen (Nerang) repeated his win from last night while junior women’s Caroline Buchanan (Canberra) had to surge across the line to win this round from New Zealand’s Victoria Hill.

The tussle was on between World Champion, Melinda McLeod (Mackay) and World number three, Lacey Oliver (Nerang) with Oliver winning and McLeod second.

07/01 Willers wins UCI Oceania round 4

BMX Australia press release
The fourth round of the UCI BMX Oceania Ranking Round continued this evening despite wet and muddy conditions on the Gold Coast. With precious national ranking points up for grabs Australia and New Zealand teams were keen to secure UCI points to improve their nation's ranking and gain places for riders to compete at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Officials allowed racing to proceed  at the Nerang BMX track after the surface was cleared of excess water. The round  also doubled as the third round of the Hog’s Breath Café Probikx and Champbikx National Series.

As rain fell heavily during the finals, riders slowed to walking pace by the fourth and final straight. In the elite women’s race third in the world Supercross rankings, Sarah Walker from New Zealand, claimed overall victory for the best of three races.  Walker however made a decision to run her bike in the final metres of the third race allowing Australia’s Melissa Mankowksi (Moranbah, QLD/Campbelltown,  NSW) to pass. Mankowski finished second overall and Ziggy Callan (Lilydale, VIC) claimed third. Walker still leads the Oceania Series with Krystal Cranfield (Gladstone) in second place overall.

The men’s race was dominated by the strong Kiwi rider, Marc Willers (Cambridge). Willers rode from the front and was challenged by Australia’s Luke Madill (Penrith, NSW) until he crashed in the third straight.  Brian Kirkham (Adelaide, SA) continued his early season form to place second while Thomas Hubert (Maitland, NSW) gained third place. Willers further cements his hold on the Oceania Series with 43 points while Madill stays in second place on 35 points.

The unluckiest rider of the night was junior rider, Sam Willoughby (Happy Valley, SA) after his bike fell just a metre from the finish line in the final race. Gold Coast rider, Stevie Janssen dominated the field all night winning every moto plus the prestigious junior men’s final. Second was Victorian, Joshua Callan (Lilydale) with Willoughby in third place. Willoughy still holds the Oceaina series lead however.

In the junior women’s race, Lauren Reynolds (Bunbury, WA) was victorious over Caroline Buchanan (Canberra, ACT) with New Zealand’s Victoria Hill (New Plymouth) placed third. Reynolds remains the Oceania Series leader.

Officials will inspect the track before official practice for the next UCI Oceania round is expected to begin at 9 am Queensland time. Rain is still falling over the Gold Coast area.

07/01 Cools takes the top spot on the UCI Charts again!

Supercross BMX press release
The Christmas Classic is a great race that everybody should get to go to. This year it was extra special for us here at Supercross as Sammy made a quick trip home from Switzerland to have Christmas as home and then made the quick flight to Columbus and proceeded to dominate the Womens Elite Class once again by taking the wins both days in the UCI Elite competition. Sam who was only 1 point behind New Zealand's Sarah Walker going into this race came out with a significant lead and is not only the North American UCI Points Leader but now has the UCI Overall points lead as well. This is an important year for UCI point qualifications as it leads up to the Olympics and as her performance shows Sammy is quite comfortable on her Supercross EVO S7 signature model frame and Pro LT forks and is looking forward to the rest of the season as she heads towards the Olympic dream.

Also at the Christmas Classic was the talk of the weekend Downtown Tyler Brown, while not an official part of the Supercross family, Tyler showed up repping his new sponsor Hurley by wearing Hurley jeans and T-shirt while racing the UCI events and was looking faster than he has in years. Some said it was the sponsorship search psyche, while Tyler said it was the confidence he had in his new Supercross EVO iS Frame and Supercross Pro Fork. Tyler caused quite the controversy this weekend by wearing the uniform of privateers world round with his Hurley jeans and T-shirt, but was looking seriously Factory fast making it into the Semi's both days and managing to add a few more points to his tally to keep him in the top 8 of North American UCI points to try to get a shot at a chance at the Olympic Games.

For more information on all our Supercross BMX riders, frames, parts and bikes, cruise on over to supercrossbmx.com for the latest rider news and product updates.
