BMX Australia press release
Australia has claimed one gold and two silver medals on the first day of competition at the World Championships in Taiyuan, China. Gold Coast youngster, Karlten Wolsey, won gold in the 10 year boy class for 20 inch. Wolsey clashed with the defending world champion from Canada, Parker Simson, in the first corner but got the advantage and retained the lead.
Wolsey won his first gold medal at six but the number one plate eluded him every year. The closest was in 2006 when Wosley gained a silver in Brazil.
In the final race Wolsey confessed he was nervous after clashing with the defending world champion. Simson. through the motos.
“Before my race I was bit scared because he (Simson) knocked me off in the second race and I was a bit nervous but I used it to my advantage in the final,” said Wolsey.
“I had a really good gate not my best gate and Parker was in lane eight and he gave me a bit of nudge with the elbow so I returned the favour. He went up the corner but didn’t crash. I was a bit wobbly but I rode my hardest,” explained Wolsey.
Even at ten years old, Wolsey has his sights set on the 2016 Olympics.
Another Nerang BMX club member, Madison Janssen, claimed silver in the 14 girls. Another silver was claimed in the 14 boys by Western Australian rider Ryan Van Vugt.
The challenge classes continue tomorrow and on Saturday the elite riders line up in their final Olympic selection race before the sport debuts in Beijing in two months time.

by The family and friends of Tim DaSilva
The family and friends of Tim DaSilva invite you to join them on Sunday June 8, 2008 from 11:06 am until 5:00 pm at the Mold Masters Sports-Plex (221 Guelph Street, Georgetown, Ontario L7G 4A8 - Upstairs Meeting Room) to learn more about the sport of BMX Racing and the importance of the Tim DaSilva BMX Track to our community of Halton Hills. Petition forms will be available to sign or please bring along a letter of support for the Tim DaSilva BMX Track.
Tim DaSilva was an Olympic hopeful in BMX racing, he raced in the Pro class and was a member of Team Ontario. During the last two months of his life he competed internationally in BMX races in Alberta and Quebec and also competed in the National and Provincial races in Ontario. Tim and his younger brother Christopher were the first two BMX racers to receive Quest for Gold funding.
Tim's goal was to compete in the 2008 Olympic Games this Summer but tragically Tim lost his life on July 15, 2006 when a machine that he was operating at Halton Place in Halton Hills tipped. Tim had designed and was building the BMX track for the community, the track was in the process of being completed when the tragic accident happened. Tim's dream was to give Ontario BMX racers the opportunity to have the most technical track to practice and race on. Tim's hope was that one day an Ontario rider could quality for a spot on the Canadian Olympic Team.
Please come out and meet Tim DaSilva's BMX heroes:
Jay Miron AKA "The Canadian Beast" is a Canadian BMX athlete and owner of MacNeil Bikes.
Jay has won 9 X-Games medals, including the first ever X-Games gold medal for Bike Dirt. In addition, Miron is credited with inventing more than 30 tricks, including the double backflip.
Jay has spent over 20 years as a BMX rider, he went straight from high school graduation to his first summer BMX tour which was the beginning of a radical journey from BMX high profile rider to an international businessman.
Bill Allen AKA "Cru Jones" was chosen to play the part in the movie "RAD" after the director saw him in an episode of Hill Street Blues. "RAD" is an 80's movie that has become a classic favourite to many BMX racers and one of the best BMX movies ever made.
"Cru Jones" was Tim's inspiration to one day become a #1 BMX rider, as a young boy Tim watched this movie endless times and in his later years made it a reality as Tim become the top rider in his class.
Riders from Team Ontario which Tim was a member will also be present. Bring along your family and friends to view firsthand what the newest Olympic sport is all about. There will be a scale clay model of the Tim DaSilva BMX Track for everyone to look at. The track is located 11.06 kms from the heart of Georgetown. You will also have a chance to win a REDLINE BMX BIKE, similar to the bikes that athletes will be racing at this Summer Olympics. A few other exciting prizes will also be given away. Other acivities, will include photo opportunities, autographs and face painting for the younger crowd.
If we stand together as a community we can succeed in our quest to Save Tim DaSilva BMX Track.
ABA press release
The American Bicycle Association hosted the Spring Nationals this past weekend, May, 23-25 in Albuquerque, NM. The Veloport/Duke City BMX Facility is the only the second BMX only facility built in the world and what a great place it is. The racing at the Spring National event was exciting to say the least! The Duke City BMX crew really stepped it up and had the facility in tip top shape and ready to race! This was the fifth PRO Series event of the season and the PRO Riders were excited to head to the high altitude of New Mexico to see who had the legs on the tour.
With the 2008 Olympic debut just around the corner for BMX racing, the buzz and hype is all around. There is getting to be more and more of the media frenzy at each event. Many of the sports top athletes from around the world were on hand to take a shot at getting some much needed points towards the ABA BMX titles. The 2008 season is shifting into high gear and the fans are loving it! Round five saw a brand new winner win both days in the AA PRO class. The kid from Alabama, Clayborn's Barry Nobles has been making his comeback from knee surgery last October by steadily getting better and better results each weekend. Barry's been making a name for himself on the ABA BMX scene and has been flirting with a win this season. Barry's had a few solid podium finishes, but this weekend Barry was on a mission. Barry seemed to be unstoppable all weekend long winning several motos and best of all the Mains! Barry Nobles took home his first two AA PRO wins in his career this past weekend and we wanted to send a big Congrats out to Barry and Clayborn bikes. The Haro boys, "DB44.com" Derek Betcher and Khalen Young kept Barry honest all weekend with a solid 2 and 3rd place finish on Saturday. DB44 has been picking up the pace lately and Khalen is always a threat for the win! Sunday saw Barry on top of AA PRO again, with Jason Rogers taking a solid 2nd and New Jersey's own Phil Delizia taking his first podium of the year with 3rd. Felt's Phil Delizia is an awesome rider was some impressive skill, if this kids gets on a roll, watch out! Once again this past weekend shows just how deep the talent pool is on the ABA BMX PRO tour. Barry Nobles makes the sixth different AA PRO winner in five stops. That's very impressive!
On the Ladies side we saw ABA National #1 girl and girl cruiser turned PRO Dominique Daniels show why she's the REAL DEAL! Dominique is no fluke, she took the win both days putting another stamp on the ladies PRO class. Terra Nichols was keeping "DD" honest on the track and brought home two more great 2nd place podium finishes both days. Third was nailed down both days by another rookie PRO sensation, GT's Rachel Luna. The ladies racing has really stepped it up over the last couple of years and the new crop of younger woman is very promising for more excitement to come.
Pro Cruiser was the Barry Nobles Kenth Fallen battle. Day #1 saw Albuquerque's own Kenth Fallen pass Barry in the last turn to take the big PRO cruiser win! Barry hung on for a much deserved 2nd with Adam Treadwell taking a break from his Firemen training school to bring home a 3rd place podium finish. Sunday was all Barry Nobles, Barry was pumped from his first AA PRO win on Saturday so he thought he's nail down his first ABA PRO Cruiser win in the same weekend. This Barry's first BIG Pro Cruiser win so we're stoked for him. Kenth Fallen rode to another impressive 2nd place finish, with Adam Treadwell once again looking good with a 3rd place for the day. Adam's been out for a while, but he looked solid all weekend for sure!
Vet Pro was back in action again. Supercross must be stoked on this guy this season. Kenth Fallen continues to be the man to beat this season in the VET PRO ranks. Kenth picked up wins number 6 and 7 for the year at his home town event. Kenth looks to be on a mission for the ABA BMX VET PRO Title and a brand new Suzuki 450F! Both days in the VET PRO class we saw the same results. GHP's John "The Jackal " Purse continues to impress with a 2nd's, Intense/Phantom/ON-TRAC's, Chad Street nailed down third, and GHP's Robert Harris was a solid 4th. Chad's due for a win any day now. He's been soooo close this season he an taste it. Robert Harris has been training like crazy and it showed this weekend. You can never count out John Purse, "The Jackal" is another rider I expect to see on top the PRO podium any day now!
The ABA, the city of Albuquerque, NM. and the entire Duke City crew would like to thank all the participants, families, teams, sponsors, and BMX industry for helping make the Spring Coast National event such a huge success!

Well it's that time of year again. The UCI World Championships will kick off on Thursday and run right through until Sunday evening. I have been hunting high and low for a link to a live stream. Freecaster.tv did a great job with the supercross rounds. However I checked their schedule and they have nothing listed for this weekend. The only link I did find was on the official 2008 world championships website, it implies it has a live stream but it pops up with an error message saying there's some missing javascript which is for the flash player I assume.
The numbers are extremely low for a modern day world championships. I guess it doesn't help that China doesn't have much of a race scene, maybe it would have been smarter to hold the event in Japan, or somewhere where domestic numbers would boost class size. I wonder if the UCI are having second thoughts about running the 2010 world champs in Russia.
There is no doubt that the riders who have made the journey to China are amongst the best riders in their class. And the results will be proof of that.
The main events, the elite classes, will certainly be interesting as riders and countries try to qualify for the Olympics. It could also be the start of a massive change in the top end of the sport. A lot of riders plan to retire once the chase of the Olympic dream is over. Sure there will be a lot of old faces around after the Olympics, but there will also be a lot of room for some new blood to shine through.
If I manage to find a live video stream I will post it here.
You can be sure that Jerry from bmxmania.com will be in China for the big event, you can always check out his site for some awesome photos and cool updates. There will also be updates at www.uci.ch.

Psykopath press release
The East Coast Team headed to The NBL Freedom National’s Woodbridge, Virginia.
The race was right in Larson’s Family backyard well not exactly in their backyard but less than 10 minutes away from their house. They had a great time and Jon Larson took some amazing pictures
Psykopath was well represented at the NOVA BMX Track in Woodbridge; the race was on April 25-27. The track was smooth and well maintained as usual. Kudos to the track Operators and all the volunteers that make this possible! The weather was warm on Saturday and cool on Sunday but the racing was exciting regardless of the weather.
Alan Hudson flew in Friday night, or more like Saturday morning. Alex Larson picked Alan up from the airport and went to the Larson's house to stay for the weekend. After arriving to the house Alex and Alan built his bike staying up until around 2am.Hmmm, maybe not the best thing to do before National Day 1.(but we all do it every once in a while) Alan Hudson USAC # 7 raced the Elite class Saturday and Sunday with some impressive starts. Showing that training is starting to pay off, just give Alan some time and he will be top 10 for sure, Diego Alejandre raced Super Ex Saturday and Sunday. He showed everyone he can get out of the gate and down the first straight quick. Finishing 3-3-1 Saturday and 4-3-2 on Sunday. Alex Larson raced Super Ex and put his heart into the race Saturday. Alex is recovering from a motorcycle crash a few weeks ago. No Main making in the Elite and Super Ex class but they put on a good show. Unfortunately, Alan and Diego crashed on Sunday, luckily both are ok. Emileigh Larson, 14 Girl, finished second in all motos and the main both Saturday and Sunday.
After the racing Saturday, Psykopath riders had a cook out at the Larson's. Some additional friends joined the fun, J.C. Alejandre, Romer and kids, and Micha Vanhorn. There was tons of food including yummy marinated chicken and marinated steak that would melt in your mouth thanks to the Alejandre's. It was a great weekend and the racing was spectacular!
Later on May 2nd, Good Old Psykovan Headed to down to U.S Nationals in Tulare, California to see some hot action racing! and we saw Alan Hudson get a second on Friday Open, he was flying on the new Redesign Tulare Track, if it wasn't that he came unclipped on the first turn he would have won, we also had the opportunity of watching Kyle " Z-Man " Zondervan debut on the A Pro. Look for Kyle in the Upcoming Nationals!
It was a good weekend, hot! And really dry, but a fun weekend! We saw a lot of old friends, and we all agree that this Summer Nationals are going to be huge! So if you planning on going to Roseville for the Summer Nationals drop by the Psykopath tent and say Hi! , who knows maybe Test Ride one of our Frames! Maybe pick up a sticker?? We’ll see. BMX Australia press release
A bad landing in practice has eliminated 19 year old Queenslander, Melissa Mankowski, from her first chance of making the first ever BMX Olympic team at this year's Beijing Olympics. The newly crowned National Champion hurt her left knee at training on Thursday just one week away from competing in the final Olympic selection event, the World Championships in Taiyuan, China.
According to Mankowski’s coach, Sean Dwight, it was not a fall but just an unfortunate incident. “She went over a jump and for some reason she unclipped and her foot came off the pedal. Her foot hit the ground and took the weight of the landing,” explained Dwight.
As soon as she landed she was screaming. It only took a minute to figure out it was her knee.”
It was her training partner, Nicole Callisto who knew the familiar signs after suffering two knee injuries herself over the past few years. Mankowski will undergo surgery on Monday to discover the extent of the damage.
With Mankowski's elimination, Australia’s chance of taking the maximum number of riders, two women to the Beijing Olympics will now be on the shoulders of Callisto and Tanya Bailey both originally from Western Australia.
According to Australia's Assistant BMX Coach, Wade Bootes it's all down this World Championships."We’re really struggling now with one rider down for gaining those country points. It is unbelievable that even after the two year selection period it is down to the final selection race with four countries fighting for the third and fourth women’s ranking positions."
When asked how hopeful Australia could be Bootes pointed out that both Callisto and Bailey had made two finals at international level before.
Bailey and Callisto placed fourth and eight at the last month’s World Cup Supercross in Adelaide. At the Beijing test event last August Callisto claimed seventh and Bailey eighth.
With France looking confirmed of the top country ranking with a current lead of 77 points it is now a close points scramble between rival countries, Australia, Argentina, New Zealand and the United States of America.
Australia’s elite men’s second ranking behind the United States of America and are 24 points clear of the Netherlands. Australia looks confident of remaining in the top five rankings for the men and as such should gain the maximum number of three riders. In the top spots are current National Champion, Jared Graves (Toowoomba) along with Luke Madill (Penrith), Kamakazi (Brisbane) and Khalen Young (Perth).
Riders depart on Monday for the flight to China where the World Championships get underway on Thursday 29th May.

exclusive right to use for their entire Elite class career.
This will give riders a possibility to market themselves and to give media and spectators an easy way to identify riders. The UCI are giving a chance to riders who have not applied for a permanent number to do so.
The Deadline for BMX Australia riders (Elite Men & Elite Women and Juniors moving up) born 1990 or earlier, wishing to receive a permanent number must submit their preferences to BMX Australia before the 17th June 2009.
For information go to www.bmxaustralia.com.au and click on the UCI Permanent Race Number link to view the application form and available numbers. You will also find the selection criteria and rules for application numbers.

Super Cheap Auto have bought all 11 Melbourne based Goldcross Cycles stores for a reported $15M. The new owners consider Melbourne's market saturated, a relief for independant bike shop owners in the Melbourne area I am sure. The new owners look to grow the company and push the stores right throughout Australia and into New Zealand. This can only mean greater sales for brands like SE.

I don't consider myself a tree hugging greeny and you wouldn't see me in front of a bulldozer chained to a tree, however I do respect the environment. I recycle, I put rubbish in the bin, and I do enjoy riding or walking through forests and national parks.
I start to wonder if I am one of the only BMXers that is concerned about the environment. Each year at the World BMX Championships, Australian BMX Championships and even at the 2007 Victorian Championships each competitor is given an event specific number plate that they must use for that event. That's thousands of one off use plastic number plates and plastic ties. Why? So they look good in photos? So the sponsors can feel warm and fuzzy about their tiny little logos appearing on the number plate? I could imagine that a world championships number plate would be held in high regard and put in a collection, especially considering the costs involved. But more local plates like national and state, well unless they were actually presentation plates would just get tossed aside after they are finished with.
The Australian government has an issue they are trying to tackle with plastic shopping bags, why aren't our BMX governing bodies also looking at ways to reduce plastic usage? Competitors already have their own plates why can't they use those?
I know what some of you are thinking, we do the same thing at the BSX charity event. Well it's not the same, we print only the number of plates that we need which is around 50. Riders hand those plates back when racing is over and we have them signed and auctioned off. From there they take pride in amongst people's BMX collections. Any unused plates are printed up with a thank you message and presented to sponsors. It's a system that works very well raising lots of money for the Royal Children's Hosplital, however it's a managable number, you can't do the same thing with thousands of plates.
What are the solutions? Allow riders to use their own plates in competition. Reusable plates? Recycle bins at the track? I'm not sure of the best solution, but I am sure that sponsors would like to see their money going to a good cause while not adding to waste problems.

Factory Tangent/Bawls press release
Spring is in full swing and the ABA has nationals all over the country for racers to showcase their skills. This weekend’s stop was dead smack in the middle of California for the US Nationals in Tulare. And we all know what that means, the California based Factory Tangent/BAWLS squad was there in full force! Looking to add some more podium finishes to record books, the team came in all BAWLS-energized and ready to roll!
Coming off a win in Oregon had the team psyched, but they knew they’d have to work even harder to repeat at a factory stacked California race. The team showed they were ready for the challenge when Riley kept his class win streak from Oregon alive and topped the podium with the win in 16x once again. Joining his teammate atop the podium Jacob pulled off a wire to wire victory in the always tough 11x class main event. Those two wins set the tone for the team as Kevin Shankle (17-18x) and Nate Abbe (13x), rode their Intense race frames to the podium as well. After the dust cleared and the points were tallied, the Factory Tangent team posted a strong second place only missing the win by two points! Props to BFR for a great day of racing and the overall win.
After just missing on Saturday the team was ready for day two of competition on Sunday Morning. Tangent’s factory girl Tyler Schaefer was the pace setter for the day with a win in 14 girls. The boys strapped on their custom BAWLS /Fly helmets and did their best to follow suit. Jacob couldn’t quite match his Saturday win with a late gate, but did rally back for the third in 11x. The dynamic duo of Blake Paulson and Nate Abbe were looking great in the 13x main until a second place slide out by Nate left him in the bottom of turn two. Teammate Blake picked up the slack and dodged a sliding Nate to cruise in for the second place spot. Riley started off the main the same as the day before with a holeshot and the lead in 16x. He looked like a lock for the win, but a charging Tory Nyhaug (Redline) chased Riley down and nipped him at the line breaking his three race win streak. When all was said and done on the day of racing, Factory Tangent pulled in a fourth place in the factory competition.
All in all the team had a great time in Tulare and posted some good finishes in the race for the ABA Factory Title. You know they’ll all be ready to go when the tour comes back West in July to Oak Creek BMX, the home track of Tangent and three of our team riders. In the mean time, keep your eyes peeled for clinics by the factory Tangent/BAWLS team in your neck of the woods. We’ll keep ya posted.
Tangent/Bawls would like to thank all of our sponsors: Tangent Products, BAWLS Guarana, Fly Racing, Intense BMX, Sinz, Thomson, Clifbar, and Riders Pro Shop.

NBL press release
Hilliard, Ohio – The National Bicycle League (NBL) is proud to announce a new multi-year partnership with Kenda Tires and Tubes. Kenda will be recognized as the “Official Tire and Tube” of the NBL National Series and also as a key co-sponsor of the ‘Bring-A-Buddy’ National Recruiting program.
To differentiate themselves in the competitive market for quality tires with innovative treads, Kenda will be promoted through a mix of national event exposure and traditional media including color advertising in BMX Today Magazine. To connect Kenda directly to thousands of potential customers, NBL will promote the brand through on-site games like the ‘Kenda Tire-Toss’, at select National events. “We truly believe in the value of ‘Experiential’ marketing and how it affects consumers in a more positive and organic way” said Kevin O’Brien, NBL Marketing Director, “Kenda is genuinely interested in promoting the sport and this adds great value to our program” O’Brien adds.
Several of Kenda’s tires are already popular with NBL members and teams including the Team NBL Champs of 2007 – VBS/Kenda from Ohio. To stay competitive, Kenda is currently developing several new lower-profile treads and a Kevlar folding bead tire to compliment their already-impressive line of rubber. Favorites, such as the Small Block Eight, Kompact and the K-Rad, continue to be the flagships of the Ohio-based brand as they forge new ground in treadnology.
“We’re looking forward to a successful venture with the NBL” said Jim Wannamaker, Kenda’s North American Marketing Director, “It’s a very exciting time for the sport and we trust the NBL to represent our brand to their members around the country” continued Wannamaker.
To kick off the sponsorship, NBL is promoting the ‘Guess the Tread’ Contest through the NBL website exclusively (www.nbl.org). Win one of five sets now!
Kenda’s partnership with the NBL comes at a perfect time as the sport nears its Olympic debut in August. NBL is working hard to attract new riders and bring back those who raced during the sport’s formative years through a number of exciting programs and cross-promotions. Visit www.nbl.org to learn more and watch for a Kenda Tire-Toss near you.

Round three of the UCI Supercross World Cup circus kicks off today. For many riders a good result is vital for national ranking and Olympic selection as it's the final of the Supercross events prior to the Olympics, the world championships in China will be the final test under race conditions for the riders. There are a lot of riders with a lot to prove, I'd hate to have to pick a winner for this one. All I can say is if Adelaide, or any Supercross rounds for that matter, are anything to go by, anything can happen.

One of our favourite things about this website is the opportunity to do product reviews on some of the best products on the market. With head product tester on the mend from an ankle injury and finally off his crutches we should be able to get back to regular weekly product reviews in the very near future. We already have two very big ones lined up and a whole lot more in the pipeline.
An Intense tyre shoot-out is high on the agenda. That's right we will have all three ITS tyres set up and putting them through their paces. We will be trying to figure out the ins and outs of the different designs and highlight the advantages of each tread pattern.
The other is the Tektro Donny Robinson Signature brakes with the carbon lever (also available with a magnesium lever) and titanium hardware. These little babys look sweet, but how will they cope under BMX conditions?
Keep an eye out for reviews on these products and a whole lot more.
We might even get a sneak preview of the Jackass presents Mat Hoffmans Tribute to Evel Knievel DVD, fingers cross.

On the 3rd and 4th of May the NSW central state series took place in ACT. The double header weekend was talked about as one of the best weekends in the series and took place at both the Melba & Tuggeranong BMX tracks. Each was a separate event. The whole weekend was a bundle of great atmosphere, weather and riders. It was set up to be a fantastic weekend and that’s just what it was.
It was fantastic to watch racing with big numbers supporting the series. The am’s were riding really well. In 9 boys the stand out was Justin “cheeky boy” Beatty with unbelievable horsepower and skill for his age. In 12 boys Ionn stood out winning the finals in smooth style. Kyle Hughes was riding with determination to show he is 1a for a reason, riding well all weekend and winning both days. “Nugget” Lowe was riding with great skill and with great speed all weekend, having 15 races a day and making A pro final’s he was very busy, but you couldn’t tell. 15 boys had Liam Gilganon and Corey Bucknal dominate a star studded field. 25-29 men’s Gavin Turner rode well all weekend. It was great to see a lot of female talent coming up. Look out for the likes of Taylor Sultana, Nicole Docherty, Danielle Beecroft and co in the near future.
The relays belonged to Liverpool as they rocked the show winning both relays and coming away very happy. It was close at times but Liverpool ran away with the lead mockingly in the dying laps.
Pro had a challenging time for all classes. In pro women it was Caitlin Wilmot and Ash Craig fighting it out all weekend long. Caitlin won the epic battle. A pro on the fist day had Warren Kasey teaching some of the younger boys what proper tricks old school riders have competing very strongly. Ben Clark was his freakish self as always riding with precision and smooth skill, only being challenged by Henderson who shook things up on every occasion. Henderson and Clark would be the smoothest youngsters I have seen on a bike in a long time. In AA pro it was the Darrell and Cameron show. Thos two were out front nearly every time while the rest scrambled for positions. Hats should go off Frank Penrose for how well he rode over the weekend showing he is improving to become a force in AA pro.
It is Great to see a large number of sprockets getting involved and having posty Pat Lowe take them through warm ups with help from Crupi’s Leigh Darrell, myself (Bmxultra/ One bikes Adam Carey) and Top elite rider Alex Cameron. Also it was great to see the old blokes out on the track, tiring on the second day they decided to have a few pump races, very amusing to watch Greg Westman from Winning Edge Cycles and Matt Black work their bikes around the track.
Such a good weekend will leave many BMX’ers very happy for the next few weeks. See you guys around the tracks!!!!

Redline Australia press release
2008 Nationals was another big year for Team Redline Australia. The team has had a very strong representation on the podium over the last few years thanks to Ziggy and Josh Callan, Ash Pemberton, Michael Vocko, Todd Pascoe & Melinda McLeod. Most of these riders have now advanced to the senior ranks and are being assisted in their development into the sport’s elite level by their respective state Institute’s of Sport or National development squads.
Ziggy was unfortunately out injured for these Nationals after a fall at Penrith but will be back on the bike for the Worlds. Josh crashed in Supercross after making it through time trials into the main comp. and had to contend with a broken thumb for the rest of the week. In spite of this setback he finished with an overall 3rd placing in the Junior Men Probikx competition and a 4th placing for Junior Men Nationals. Ash Pembo and Michael Vocko reached semis in senior men’s Probikx, semis for Ash in Nationals and a tough quarter stopped Michaels run in senior men Nationals. Great effort by both riders who are newcomers to the senior elite ranks for 2008. One of the senior ranks young guns, Todd Pascoe impressed in senior men Probikx with a finals berth 5th placing and reached semi’s in Nationals. Justin Braybon also had a run at the tough Junior Men’s class reaching Semi’s and finishing the Probikx competition in 7th place.
The team unfortunately lost Luke Pretlove to injury in the early stages of cruiser practice. Luke ended up in hospital for the remainder of the week and we all wish him well for a speedy recovery.
Our 2008 star rider, Melinda McLeod was in great form after some recent injury recuperation and took out 1st place in 15 girls Nationals and finished 1st place in the National Champbikx competition. Another remarkable result from Melinda.
With a lot of our riders moving into the elite ranks there was a big focus on the development of the junior squad this year and they did not disappoint.
Our NSW representatives, Saya and Kai Sakakibura impressed yet again. Saya finished in 1st place in 9 year girls in front of our other 9 girls rider and last year’s National 8 girls champion, Katie Van Zanden. Saya’s big brother and last year’s National 11 boys champion Kai, was unlucky in the final of the 12 boys but ended up in 4th place after leading all his heats quarters and semi’s.
Our West Australian juniors had a very strong representation in the finals this year with Rachelle Smith placing 1st in 13 girls 20 inch and 3rd in cruiser. Special congratulations must go to Rachelle who has now been National champion for the third year in a row. Luke Tanner placed 4th in 13 year boys and Hannah Throns placed 4th in 13 year girls. Thanks must go to the Redline WA agent Jim Howe of Pal and Panther for his continued support which has allowed the Redline team to build a very strong base in the WA BMX community.
The Queenslanders did not let the team down, lead by the North Queenslanders Katie Van Zanden who finished with a 2nd in 20 inch and 1st place in cruiser and Mitchell Hoad, 3rd in 9 year boys. Tristyn Kronk placed 3rd in cruiser and was unlucky not to advance out of his semi in 12 boys 20 inch. These riders are all mentored by the North Queensland Redline agent, the remarkable Jeff Mills who is doing a great job in assisting our talented North Queensland contingent.
South Queensland was represented by Troy Elliot, Sarah & Lachlan Harvey and Adam & Liam Hilliam. Troy put in great performance after missing out on finals at his first Nationals last year and made finals in both 10 boys 20inch and cruiser placing 6th and 7th respectively. Unfortunately 11 year old Lachlan was out injured after a crash in the early stages of the cruiser competition but big sister Sarah stepped up with 2nd in 13 year girls and 4th in cruiser. Adam Hilliam narrowly missed out advancing to semis in the tough 14 year boys class while Liam made it through for an 8th in cruiser.
Old guys rock !!. What a performance from the teams elder statesmen. The Victorian wildman Damien Callen placed 2nd in 40-44 cruiser, the big man Kev Hilliam from Queensland placed 8th in 45+ 20 inch after a fall in the final and our WA rocket man Paul Throns went home with a 1st. in 45+ mens 20 inch. The star of the show however was West Australian Karl Mustchin who dominated the tough 35 -39 cruiser class for a win and placed 8th in 30+ masters 20 inch. Karl has recently been appointed coach for the National Junior Development Squad and will accompany the squad to China for the World’s.
To top all these remarkable results off, Redline once again finished in 1st place in the National Corporate Team Trophy competition and also won bike of the year, for the second year running in the BMXpress Gold Cup awards. Many thanks to Warwick Wheeler who continues to be a great supporter of the sport of BMX.
Thanks must also go to Bill DeMaid and his hard working team at BMX International for their continued and generous support of the Redline team and the sport of BMX. Thanks also to all the officials of BMX Australia and the state associations who put on another first class National Championship event.
