The ABA BMX “Hall of Fame” is the who’s who of BMX and consists of riders and industry members who have made notable contributions to the sport of BMX racing. Each year since 1985, a select few BMX (Bicycle Motocross) riders and industry veterans have been inducted into this elite group of individuals. In addition to the “Early BMX Pioneers”, “BMX Racers” and “Industry Members” categories, a “Freestyle Pioneers”category is being added to the BMX Hall of Fame for the first time ever. This will be a great addition to the National BMX Hall of Fame, allowing many talented riders to be honored.
The public is encouraged to attend the September 17th , 2009 ceremony. The ceremony will be limited to the first 300 individuals to purchase tickets; all proceeds will go directly to the National BMX Hall of Fame Scholarship fund. Chandler, AZ - Seven legendary members of the BMX Racing and Freestyle community will be inducted into the National BMX Hall of Fame at the San Diego Hall of Champions on September 17, 2009. The Chula Vista Olympic Training Center will be the new home of the National BMX Hall of Fame and on Friday, September 18, 2009 at 10:00 am there will be a dedication ceremony to unveil the new facility at the training center
The seven honorees represent BMX racing and Freestyle BMX from the 1970’s and 1980’s and one industry contributor. The inductees are Danny Oakley (1960’s and 1970’s pioneer); D.D. Leone (1980’s Professional Racer); Troy Lee (BMX Industry contributor, Troy Lee Designs); R.L. Osborn and Mike Buff (legendary BMX Action Trick Team); Eddie Fiola (freestyle Pioneer); Jeremy McGrath (past BMXer lifetime achievement award). There will also be special recognition given to Clayton John (retired ABA President) and Bernie Anderson (retired ABA Chairman of the Board), current BMX Hall of Fame members, for their recent induction into the U.S. Bicycling Hall Of Fame in Davis, CA.

INDUCTEES FOR CLASS OF 2009:
Danny Oakley: Danny began organized BMX racing in 1970 and retired in 1981. He was instrumental in establishing organized BMX racing, and numerous tracks in Southern and Northern California, during a time when organized BMX did not formally exist. A few such tracks are The Downhill Track of Baldwin Park in 1970, Landels Park, Hamann Park and The Downhill Track of Mount Tamalpais in 1974. Danny Oakley, a true Legend of our sport, raced for such legendary teams as Bikette & Dirtmaster, Rick`s Bike Shop, Silver Shield, MotoPRO, Speedo and Mongoose. He was instrumental in forming Pro Products, Inc., MotoPRO and Speedo. Moreover, Danny was instrumental in designing product for Pro Products, Inc., MotoPRO, Speedo, B.M.X. Products, Inc., and Mongoose, including the infamous Moosegoose, a 20 inch BMX race frame Danny designed for taller riders and racers (Danny is quite tall himself). He has conducted BMX Racing Clinics and Demonstrations in the United States and in Europe. He has participated in NBA, UBR, NPSA, CBA and ABA sanctioned races. Danny raced and won numerous titles and championships, such as 4-Time West Coast Champion, 6-Time Northern California Champion, NPSA National Champion and NORA CUP, to name a few. Danny was one of the racers that were featured in the BMX episode of CHiPs.
D.D. Leone: Born Dominick Donald Leone Jr., but better known in the BMX world as "D.D.", he began racing in 1980, at the age of 14 years old. From Louisiana, D.D. was known as the original "Ragin' Cajun" and helped put Louisiana and the Southeast on the BMX map. He raced for over 12 years, participating in over 2000 races and won or placed in 1300. Like most racers, he started off racing for local shops. His determination and winning ways on the national scene got him some much needed recognition and before long he was hooked up by Redline with a "Factory" sponsorship 1982. Later in his career, he rode for Free Agent and Kastan. D.D. was always in the hunt for the ABA Pro Cruiser title. He officially retired from BMX and is currently working and living in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. He is also involved with the local BMX scene in Louisiana helping out at ABA's Gretna BMX track.
Troy Lee: Troy was a long time motocross racer that started Troy Lee Designs in 1981 by following in his father's footsteps of helmet painting. Troy first worked with BMX racer Dave "Custom Cully" Cullinan by custom painting his helmets. This led to Troy working with many of the top BMX pros around the world. Troy expanded his business from helmet painting to helmet manufacturing in the mid 90's, with the "Edge" helmet being the first. Then in 1998, Troy launched a full apparel line. Today, his business has grown from helmet painting to one of the top brands in the industry. Troy Lee Designs now has a catalog that spans over 50 pages of product, including the innovative bicycle helmet, the D2, and a line of protective gear. Troy enjoys working with "the world's fastest racers" from F1 to Indy Car to NASCAR, Motocross to Enduro to Freestyle, Dirt Track to Road Racing, MTB to BMX, and everything in between. Troy's main goal is to make and design the best products in the world for the "the world's fastest racers".
R.L. Osborn & Mike Buff: Although they are best known as the "Godfathers of Freestyle", both R.L. and Buff got their start as BMX racers. At age 11, R.L. was part of the first ever "BMX test team" for Bicycle Motocross News (from late '75 to late '76). An entrepreneur at the early age of 14, R.L. started up his own company, Hot Stickies. As the son of BMX Hall of Famer, Bob Osborn, R.L. went on to become one of the main test riders for BMX ACTION magazine. In 1978, R.L. teamed up with fellow BMXA employee Bob Haro to form the very first freestyle team, which made its debut at ABA's Winternationals in Chandler, AZ. Local Torrance hot-shoe racer Mike Buff joined the BMX ACTION test team in 1979. Buff soon crossed over to freestyle and in the absence of Haro, the longtime teaming of R.L. & Buff began. As the "Nerd herd", R.L. & Buff were vital in setting BMX trends during the 80's, from jumping styles in bike tests to the 4x4 vehicle craze, to clothing fashions and hairdos. Each year from '82 until '88, the BMX ACTION trick team (as well as R.L.'s later sponsorship with Redline and General) spread the BMX gospel. In all, R.L. and Buff took their annual Summer Tours to 48 states in the U.S. and over 15 countries, taking BMX to places where racers and tracks couldn't, turning many kids on to BMX in one form or another.
Eddie Fiola: Eddie is a true legend in BMX and arguably the best rider to EVER ride a skatepark. Eddie is credited with being the first rider to do a 540 in a pipe. Eddy won four "BMX Action Nora Cup" awards and five "King Of The Skatepark" titles. At the time, the "King Of The Skatepark" competitions were as big in the freestyle world as the X-Games and Dew Tour are today. In the early days, Eddie was sponsored by Bottema Forks, SE Racing, Haro, and Premier Helmets. At the end of 1982, Eddie was hired by Kuwahara to design, ride, and promote the E.T. Freestyle bike. Eddie was also the man behind one of the most famous freestyle bike designs to this day, the GT PRO Performer. It had a very unique design for it's time and is a stand-out among collectors. He also brought the Potts mod to the table by working extensively with Steve Potts. Eddie is credited for taking his idea to Steve who designed the technical end of things. Eddie applied it in the skatepark and the Potts mod is still in use to this day! Eddie was known for running many "different" things than the norm in his day. He ran 1 3/8th wheels in the skatepark when no one else was. He would show up with either an all white, all black, or all yellow bike and uniform with his trademark, an upside down #1, on his back. Eddie toured all over the world and brought freestyle to the masses, performing at BMX tracks, BMX nationals, bike shops, arena's, and even performed at Anaheim Stadium at the Superbowl of Motocross. You name it, Eddie performed for the fans. But before all that, Eddie was a racer. He was an Orange Y and Ascot local and has a great history in the BMX racing scene. Even in his heyday, the "KING of skateparks" would show up unannounced and incognito to race at local races. He was known for getting out front and busting out some tricks, which were HUGE for that time, like a 360 over a double jump, to impress the fans. It is rumored that the character of Cru Jones in the movie "RAD" was loosely based on the life story of Eddie Fiola. Although Eddie did not play the main character, he was a stunt double in the movie. Today, Eddie works in the movie industry as a stunt man and is credited with working on such great movies as The Italian Job, Indian Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and The Dukes of Hazard, just to name a few.
Jeremy McGrath: Often referred to as "MC", "Showtime", and "The King" (meaning the "King of Supercross"), Jeremy is the winningest Supercross racer ever, winning seventy-four 250cc Main Events and capturing seven 250cc Championships between 1993 and 2000. He also earned twelve AMA Motocross titles, 2 Motocross Des Nations titles, and an X-Games Gold Medal and Bronze Medal in his career. As a young boy he began racing BMX and became one of the leading BMX racers in the nation and even had a "factory" ride with VDC. At the age of 15, McGrath decided to try his luck at BMX's big brother, motocross, where he was able to translate many of the racing skills he had mastered throughout his years of racing BMX. After just three years riding as an amateur, McGrath made his AMA debut in 1989 and the rest, as they say, is history. Throughout all his fame and success in motocross, Jeremy always kept his BMX roots. He worked with GT bicycles and even had a complete BMX bike dubbed the "Showtime" model.

On return to work on Tuesday after the worlds I had my car still fully loaded with 3 bikes, camera gear and my laptop, parked in a private car park in Fitzroy. During daylight hours (some time between 2:30 and 5:00) someone smashed one of the windows and took my laptop. The laptop isn't vital to bmxultra.com, it's mostly used in the case where I might have a problem with my main computer or when I'm on road trips like the worlds, but it would be handy to get it back.
If anyone sees an unmarked Dell computer full of BMX photos and a copy of the bmxultra.com website on it, oh and there was a desktop background image of the bsx track covered in snow please email webmaster@bmxultra.com.

Team Free Agent is back from the 2009 UCI World Championships down in Australia. A good weekend for the Team, so so close to being a perfect weekend but I guess that's Racing. This years Worlds was the biggest ever to date showing racing is still on its way up.
First bit of good news from the Worlds, Team Free Agent won the Team Trophy and became World Team Champions for the 3rd year in a row.
Olympic and defending World Champion Maris Strombergs was feeling good all weekend in Australia and qualified through to the final in 1st place winning his semi final. Ramiro Marino also made the Elite men's final coming in behind Maris in the 1st semi and it looked like we were going to get 3 Free Agent riders in the final when Cristian Becerine took the lead in the 2nd semi final only to get hit from behind going into the first corner and crashing, ending his chances of a shot at the title with his 2 team mates.
As the final took off Maris was battling hard for the lead going into the first turn with the USA's Donny Robinson, but being so tight he had to brake to make the turn and exited the first turn in 7th. Instead of quitting Maris fought back so hard to get back up front, catching all the way to 4th place at the finish which shows his heart and determination no matter what place he is in. Maris was given a lot of respect from the fans for his never give in attitude this weekend for sure and showed everyone never to give in till the end.
While all that was going on Ramiro Marino rode a great race to come home 3rd and a place on the podium and bronze medal, nearly taking silver but just missing out on it to the USA's Mike Day.

New Zealand rider Sarah Walker collected her second rainbow jersey after winning the cruiser class title at the UCI BMX World Championships in Adelaide tonight.
Walker (Kawerau) added the cruiser title to the BMX elite world championship she won last night at the Adelaide Showgrounds.
She is believed to be the first elite woman to win the double of the BMX and Cruiser class world titles, the latter raced on bikes with larger 24 inch diameter wheels.
It is her second Cruiser world championship, winning for the title in Canada two years ago and she placed third last year.
Walker, who was on cloud nine after her world championship double, said it had been difficult to focus today after her brilliant victory last night.
“I did manage to get plenty of sleep because I really wanted to give it my best shot today,” Walker said. “But I had the attitude today that I was so pleased with my performance whatever happened. So I pretty much muddled through the motos.”
She did more than that, winning all three impressively in the three fastest times in all the qualifying heats.
“Then I just talked myself into focussing. I played some music and got myself into the zone. I knew I could do the double and really concentrated on putting down a smooth lap.”
Walker nailed the final, bursting first out of the start and winning by more than a second in 32.218, the fastest time of the day. She finished ahead of yesterday’s silver medallist, Manon Vanetino from France with Lithuania’s Vilma Rimsaite third.
“This hasn’t sunk in yet. This morning I really didn’t have the time to think that I had become a world champion because I had to prepare for today.
“This is a huge confidence boost for me. I came to these championships with confidence in my own ability because I knew I had done the training and the hard work. Now I know I can be the best and I can foot it with the best.
“I’ll take some time now to re-evaluate things and plan ahead. There’s a lot to do and still a lot of improvement in me. We have the Olympic qualification starting this year and I have more world championships to come.
“But the big goal is obviously the London Olympics. That is the ultimate dream. “
Fellow Rotorua club rider Tania Carson also qualified for the final, finishing sixth after finishing seventh, fifth and fourth in the three qualifying motos.
Canterbury’s Elyse Imber finished sixth in the final of the junior women, after qualifying strongly with two seconds and a third in the motos.

About the UCI BMX World Championships
The annual Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), BMX World Championships have been held all around the world since 1993. The first World Championships was held 1982 in Dayton Ohio, USA Since then winners race in age and championship classes in both 20 inch and 24 inch or cruiser class. All riders making the final are awarded plates with 1 to 8 which they can use in international competitions. Elite riders receive medals while other divisions receive trophies. The coveted World Championship jersey with rainbow stripes will be awarded to the elite and junior men's and women's winners.

Canberra's Caroline Buchanan has been forced to withdraw due to injury from this week's UCI BMX World Championships being staged at the Adelaide Showgrounds in South Australia.
"I've never had a big injury and never had to miss out on a race before so it's pretty disappointing," said Buchanan.
The 18 year old reigning Australian Champion injured her back during training last month in Austria and, whilst she is recovering well, doctors have advised her to pull out of the Championships and concentrate on her recovery.
"I was training starts on an old BMX gate and it didn't drop when it should have," said Buchanan. "I kept going though and did a scorpion faceplant over the gate and hyper-extended my legs over my head.
"It wasn't too bad at the time and I didn't feel much pain," said Buchanan who soon after raced and won the four-cross event at the Maribor round of the Mountain Bike World Cup in Slovenia. "Apparently that, and the long flight back to Australia, did more damage to my back so I got an MRI done when I got home and it showed a tear in a disc in my lumbar region."
Buchanan had originally hoped to recover in time for this weekend's racing but doctors warned against rushing back into competition.
"All the doctors said this sort of injury needs to heal so if I had trained too early and pushed it at any time it could tear more or bulge and then it would a really long recovery time," she explained. "The doctors said six weeks and this weekend is five weeks and I've been really 'babying' it along, not lifting anything, not bending, not sitting on the couch, sleeping on my side and doing lots of physio work to get it right.
"It would have been great to race in front of a home crowd with everyone there to support me but my focus is now on preparing for the Supercross Series with the first round on next month in South Africa," said Buchanan. "It has been pretty difficult getting back into it but everytime I complete a new exercise and there's no pain I get a little more confidence back.
"I wish the Australian team all the best for this week," she said. "I have been speaking to them and they all seem really well prepared."

Registration and practice for the UCI World Championships in Adelaide Australia starts today. Practice will continue through Wednesday and competition will begin on Thursday at the Wayville Showgrounds. Challenge 20 inch classes will be split over Thursday and Friday, Elite will be run on Saturday and cruisers on Sunday. BECERINE AND DANIELS ROCK THE HOUSE IN NASHVILLE
The NBL Music City Nationals in Nashville, TN turned in the biggest numbers of the season so far and with only three more races left on the circuit, the NBL Elite Series chase will come down to the NBL Grands once again. Music City BMX hosted the season’s top race again and with all kinds of entertainment and extra’s the event has quickly become one of the best races of the season. Four Olympic medallist have today confirmed they will compete at next week’s BMX World Championships in Adelaide. Headlining the field is current world champion and Olympic gold medallist, Maris Strombergs from Latvia. Olympic silver medallist, Mike Day (USA) and bronze medallist, Donny Robinson (USA) also today confirmed and a part of a strong American contingent.
According to UCI BMX Sports Co-ordinator, Johan Lindstrom, “Maris Strombergs is the man to beat! He has shown great consistency throughout the season and wants to keep that jersey for another year.”
In the record books only a few riders have back-to-back wins at the World Championships,” explained Lindstrom. “However the USA, French and Dutch teams have strong riders that will put up a challenge for Maris.”
The women’s podium is wide open with the recent withdrawal of two- time World Champion, Shanaze Reade (UK). Reade was aiming to compete in three cycling World Championships this year but an operation on her shoulder has put her on the sideline. Reade now misses the opportunity of claiming her third consecutive World BMX Championship title.
Out to take the top spot will be Olympic silver medallist, Laetita La Corguille (FRA). World bronze medallist, New Zealand’s Sarah Walker, will be favourite to win while Canada’s top rider, Samantha Cools, is expected to be hot on her heels. Showing top form recently is French rider, Eva Ailloud after an impressive third in the first round of the World Cup Supercross in April.
“The competitive level amongst the women has never been better,” said Lindstrom. “We can expect to see some heated battles for sure.”
It will be the junior men’s race though that will attract the local fans from Adelaide. Current World Junior Champion, Sam Willoughby from Adelaide could rewrite record books if he wins on Saturday. Willoughby could become the first rider ever to claim two World Junior titles. Willoughby will have to contend with strong American pair, national champion, Corben Sharrah (USA) and Denzel Stain (USA)
The junior women’s race also has two Aussie favourites with silver world medallist Lauren Reynolds out to make amends from missing a national title along with bronze world medallist, Rachel Bracken also in the mix. Defending World Junior Champion Manon Valentina from France is expected to put up some fierce opposition.
Australia’s Beijing Olympians, Luke Madill and Nicole Callisto, will return to international competition. Billy Jolliffe (Newcastle) could also be a strong chance after recent form saw him take the national title in Perth two months ago.
Construction has started on the indoor BMX track which will ne housed indoors at the Adelaide Showground. Olympic track builder, Tom Ritzenthauler, will construct the 310 metre long track in just five days.
Competition gets underway on Thursday 23rd July with the elite races on Saturday 25th July. Racing will continue on Sunday 26th July.

This past weekend the MCS Factory Team made the trip up to Nashville, Tennessee for the NBL Music City Nationals. Leaving on Thursday morning, we made the 15 hour drive up. We got there just in time to place the trailer and scoop Cory Watts up at the airport. It was a long day to say the least.
Friday was gonna be a scorcher! Temps were up in the 90’s and I don’t think it could have been more humid than it was. But the track looked really good and the riders all liked it, so that helps to balance it all out. Robert Cambell and his Nashville Parents group did and awesome job getting ready for the race. However, there was nothing anyone could do about the weather coming in...
Saturday was just as hot and sticky as Friday, then something took the edge off... That something was a storm system that was rolling through. It didn’t fully dump on us, but it rained enough that the tarps came out and the race was on a 3 hour delay, that’s an eternity sitting around waiting to get back going again. But finally, the all clear was given and back to it we went.
The racing in “The Ville” was awesome! Riders were battling it out in almost every single main. One miscue and you were shuffled back through the pack. Our guys had a pretty good weekend... Raul Gomez took first both days in class and a first and a second in cruiser. PTP, having just moved up to 26-34X, showed that he is gonna be a contender with first both days. Cory Watts took second on Saturday and backed it up with a first on Sunday. Newly turned 16X Bryan Kipp took a digger in the first turn for a short day in class and then a fourth in open, then came back for a 4th on Sunday. Open wouldn’t go the best it could have for our guys, Kipp got two fourths, Cory got two fifths and PTP got a sixth and an eighth. Our 11X, Tucker Rice, scored a third and a second in class and a second and a third in 11-12 cruiser.
Overall, we had a great time in Nashville. Personally, I’m calling in the next “Must-do National of the summer!” The track is great, the people are nice, the city is fun, what more do you want. If you didn’t make it this year, make sure it is on your schedule for next year. See you at the Grands!

Here's an update of how our crew from the ACT, the Rose tribe, who have been competing in the NSW Southern Regional Series.

Mikayla, Nik and Joshua compete each season in the N.S.W. Southern Region Series to be eligible to race at the N.S.W. Championships later that year in October. This year was a good year for two of them.
Nikalus came out flying for the first round of 11 boys coming third to two Australian plate holders on his 20” and winning the 11 – 12 Boys cruiser. Unfortunately he crashed badly in practice at the ACT Championships breaking his arm in 2 places and that stopped him from competing in the four race series.
Joshua raced hard all season making semis on his 20”in 14 boys and finals on his cruiser in 13 – 14 Boys cruiser. Consistency on his Cruiser gave Josh third overall for the series and a little bit of prize money too.
Mikayla raced very consistently all series winning almost every heat and final in 9 girls 20” leaving little to chance in her winning of the Regional Champions Jersey for 2009. Mikayla competed in the 13 and under Girls cruiser against some stiff competition and finished the Series with a respectful fifth place.
As the Worlds draw closer Mikayla has been training hard under the watchful eye of Coach Craig Fisher. Thanks to Dave Shearer and ACTBMXA who have paid for Craig to fly down from the Gold Coast, back to his old stomping ground, to prepare the riders for the upcoming event. Mikayla is training hard with a SPEEDTAP program to assist her in her quest at the World Championships.
Recently Josh, Nik and Mikayla travelled to Luke Madill’s home to train on his Olympic SX Track. The kids loved riding with Luke and got a lot of his advice and guidance throughout the day. The funniest thing of the day was Mikayla climbing her way to the top of the start hill (3 shipping containers high) and riding down. As she was half way down she let go of her brakes and hit the first 11m double jump launching herself skyward to only land in the middle and crashing. She got up laughing and wanted to go again. That is courage, or madness, not quite sure! One tough little girl!
We would like to wish all the Australian Riders attending the World Championships all the very best and hope they enjoy themselves and the chance to represent their country. See ya there!

The series will qualify riders to participate in USA Cycling high performance training camps at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. There will be four camps per year, and qualified riders will have opportunities to train with Olympic athletes on the Beijing Olympic replica track and the new ABA sanctioned track, which will replicate the 2010 UCI World Championship track. These athletes will also receive instruction in nutrition, strength training and recovery.
“To insure the continued success of American riders internationally, we need to identify potential riders at an early age that have the skills necessary to compete on an Olympic level BMX Track,” stated Mike King, USA Cycling’s BMX Program Director. “The exciting component of the development series is the fact that every rider is afforded the opportunity to qualify for participation at these valuable camps at the Olympic Training Center."
This level of training is becoming more and more essential for athletes to compete at the Olympic or UCI Supercross level and for a rider to reach his or her full potential.
“It is always exciting to see the impact on an athlete after experiencing the sports medicine and sports science facilities available at an Olympic Training Center,” said USA Cycling CEO Steve Johnson. “The facilities are unsurpassed in the world and offer invaluable feedback on a rider’s training capacity and potential.”
The ABA, with 30 plus years of experience in BMX programming, has proven to be an invaluable partner in helping to create this series. The organization will facilitate all points tabulations and event logistics at all national and local series events.

2010 USA CYCLING BMX Junior Development Series Format
The USA CYCLING BMX Junior Development Series is designed to allow all riders born in the designated years (2010 = 1994 & 1995) to compete for the opportunity to receive high performance training at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA. Furthermore, the goal of this program is to allow our best young U.S. riders an opportunity to progress to the highest level of international BMX competition and to familiarize themselves with the bigger, faster, and more demanding style of BMX racing, which is contested at the UCI Supercross World Cup level and the Olympic Games. All Junior Development camps will take place at the U.S. Olympic Training Center while utilizing the Olympic replica BMX track, the series will facilitate competition starting at the local level and culminating at the National level. USA Cycling will run four Junior Development Camps each year, so the series will determine four times per year who will be invited. The series will run as follows;
Local Level All Multipoint events at ABA Sanctioned local tracks will host a Jr. Development Series Event. Riders will count their best three scores from these events.

National Level All ABA National Events will host Junior Development Series Events. The National events will offer more points than the local events due to stronger competition. The local level component of this series will start in January of 2010. Once again, for this camp only we will award National USA CYCLING Junior points for all three days at each of the below national events.

The Morphine Industries crew laid low this past weekend, except two A Pro/Super X riders, Gavin Lubbe and Tyler Faoro. They hit both sanctioned races, dominating the top of the podium with 3 of the four wins.
A Pro – Gavin Lubbe went to Rosedale for the ABA Summer Nationals. This was Gavin’s last race before he heads to the World stage to compete for his homeland, South Africa. He hit it in style, taking the top podium spot on Day 1 and Day 2 in A Pro.
Super X - Tyler Faoro headed to Pontiac, MI for the NBL Great Lakes National as he continues his tour of the Midwest. Tyler made his presence felt once again as he battled with Jeffery Upshaw for the top spot on the Podium in the Elite Open. Tyler took the 1st in the main on Day 1 and settled for 2nd on Day 2.

SOUTH PARK TIGHTENS UP THE CHASE – NASHVILLE READY TO ROCK
The NBL Stars n’ Stripes National in South Park, PA is a classic on the NBL circuit for good reason. It’s one of the most popular tracks in the USA and has a rich history of action dating back to the 70’s when BMX was in the formative years. This years National may have proved to be the turning point in the season for several title-hungry riders looking to be on the podium come September at the NBL Grand Nationals.
GHP’s Randy Stumpfhauser continued on his hot streak taking back-to-back wins. The wins helped catapult Stumpfhauser to within 26 points of Olympic Gold Medalist, and World Champion, Maris Strombergs of Latvia (Free Agent). Celly Smelly’s Matt Pohlkamp, who doubled last year at South Park, put his new Diamondback to good use earning an impressive second and third – his best performance of the year. Free Agent’s Cristian Becerine raced his way to a second on day one and is now third overall in the standings. With 5 more left in the series, the battle for the title is set for a huge showdown on Labor Day Weekend.
Fly’s Dominque Daniels, came into South Park with the overall series lead and walked away with two huge wins. Redline’s Alise Post, who won both days in Fresno, was expected to challenge for the win but it was Intense/Dyna-Pep’s Amanda Geving who rode in for both second place finishes. Post did score a third on day one ahead of BMXTruth/Fly’s Madison Pitts. Daniels continues to lead the chase by a good margin ahead of Post and Pitts. Post will need to score huge in Nashville to stay close. Adding even more excitement to the mix, Jamie Lilly came out of retirement to race on Saturday and earned a respectable 4th. Welcome back Jamie!
Excalibur/TLD’s Josh Meyers has emerged as the man to beat in Super-Ex and he confirmed it with two big wins. Free Agent’s Fausto Endara kept Meyers honest with two second place finishes but the rest of the pack was a mix of riders not currently ranked in the top five. Kovachi’s Jason Larev scooped up a third on Saturday and BMXmania’s Vance Wiesendanger earned the same result a day later. Meyers padded his lead and is a mere three points away from capping out. Geico Powersport’s Matt Kelty, who was injured in Fresno, and Dan’s Weston Pope trail Meyers in the overall chase.
With five more races left in the series, the Masters championship is heading for a three-way battle. Intense/Dyna-Pep’s Tommy Opincar was second both days at South Park but consistency has paid off as he now sits atop of the standings. Standard’s Doug-E-Fresh Crowell, in his first appearance as a Master, and Philip Potosnak split wins at the Stars n’ Stripes and played the spoilers. Tim Dinger has also used consistency to his advantage and sits only ten points back of Opincar on the year. Free Agent’s Dale Holmes, who already has five wins under his belt, took the weekend off but will no doubt challenge for the title in Louisville, Kentucky.
Next up – The Music City Nationals in Nashville, Tennessee, July 10-12. NBL will host a Future Stars Rider Clinic on the Friday from 11am-2pm. UGP Opens are $10 so make sure to get qualified for the UGP Open Championship.

Talented BMX rider, Caroline Buchanan, who recently took out the National BMX Championships and the National Mountain Bike Four Cross title in January, is now aiming to go one better and claim a world title in both disciplines this year. The 18 year old intends to start her world title chase when she competes in this month’s UCI BMX World Championships in Adelaide. Buchanan then hopes to cap off a stellar year by adding a mountain bike world title to her already impressive list of sporting achievements in four cross on the World Cup circuit. Final team nominations for the World Championships will be announced in August and Buchanan is confident of a spot.
In another world first both cycling World Championships will be held in Australia and for Buchanan the Four Cross world title will be conducted just metres from her home in Canberra.
At the BMX World Championships, Buchanan will line up with the current Olympic silver medallists, Laetitia le Corguille (FRA). While current World Champion, Shanaze Reade from Britain, is ruled out following injury, her absence will give riders like Buchanan a chance to claim the crown. Likely challengers could be world ranked riders, Eva Ailloud (FRA) and Sarah Walker (NZ), currently first and second respectively. Also in the line up will be Australia’s Olympic finalist, Nicole Callisto from Perth.
Buchanan departs in ten days time to join the BMX National Team’s training camp in Adelaide prior to the championships. Racing in the BMX World Championships gets underway at the Adelaide Showground between the 23 – 26 July.

The 2009 ABA BMX racing season has been a crazy and exciting one so far this season. Almost every ABA BMX event this season has been up in rider participation and attendance. Some events have been the largest they have been in the past 10 years. The UCI events, the USAC National Championships, and the ABA BMX Nationals series events have been a who's who in the BMX racing world. We've even seen some world class dirt jumpers make the jump back to their roots and get back out on the track. Heck, even everyone's favorite BMX hero, Cru Jones has been spotted on an ABA BMX track in 2009! The last few weeks the last rounds before the final rounds in Denmark were held in Belgium, Norway and England.
ONE/Kenda’s European Champion Tommaso Giustacchini from Italy was sick in Belgium, but took a 2nd place and a 1st in Cheddar, England.
Toms Skujins from Latvia took an 8th place in round 13 in Elite Men in Cheddar.
Aneta Hladikova from Czech Republic got 6th and 7th in Dessel Belgium, and 4th in Sandness Norway, but broke her arm in round 12. She will be out for 6-8 weeks.
Arturs Matisons from Latvia will not compete this year. He tried practice in Norway, but his ankle has not recovered enough to get back in competition.
In the US Maliek Byndloss is kicking ass. Maliek won the Stars and Stripes National in Pittsburgh, Pa, both classes, both days.
