26/02 Morphine Industries Hits Oldsmar BMX for ABA Gator Nationals

Morphine Industries press release
The long awaited ABA Gator Nationals hit with a bang this weekend and the Morphine crew was there to live it up.

The factory trailer and most of the team rolled into town Thursday night to stake our claim to some terra and get some track time before the masses rolled into town the following day.  Props go to Jonny and the crew at Oldsmar for setting up the track and putting together the makings for great weekend of racing.

The team hit practice on Friday to work out the road kinks and get a taste of what the track had to offer and then it was out on the town for a little R & R.  Things get a little fuzzy at that point but I think I remember Kevin Tomko showing me pictures of his glory days, Damian sleeping in the backseat of the car and Barry’s hair straighter in the hotel room.

Then it was on to Saturday and we are ready to roll:

VET PRO – Tim Dinger came out swinging taking a few top spots in the motos but getting squeezed in the semi ended his day on Saturday.  Sunday, he came back with top spots in the motos again but getting squeezed was not on the menu today - charging to a third place podium finish in the Main.

AA PRO - Gavin Lubbe gave the pink, black and white a rest for the weekend and rode for the  homeland in the South Africa colors.  And ride he did with a great performance on Saturday charging through the motos, quarters and semi to take a spot short of the podium in fourth.  On Sunday there was the making of a repeat performance, however, a pedal slip changed those plans and keep him out of the main.

A PRO – Jason LaRev rode hard in the stack A PRO class both days narrowly missing the transfer spots. But….ooh the ladies.

36-40X - Doran Bradshaw feeling a little under the weather on Saturday morning, bucked up and rode anyway to the jeers of his team.  Not having the normal Bradshaw style brought him up short of the main.  Coming back on Sunday with a good night rest to continue his assault, Doran took a 5th in the main (still not Bradshaw style).

15X – Damian Cherepko tore up the field and turned heads with his dominating performance.  Racing Class on Saturday and Sunday, Damian took a 2nd and 8th due to a crash in the second turn.  In Junior Dev, Damian pounded the track taking the pro sets and putting bike lengths between him and the field.  He took a 3rd on Saturday and topped the podium on Sunday with a 1st.

13X - Noah Reeves rode in one of the biggest and stacked classes of the weekend with 25 riders.  Saturday proved to be a banner day as he sailed through the motos and semi.  Getting pinched out in lane 1 in the main, proved to be a tough place to make up ground and he settled for a 7th.  Sunday was another day of the same with a cruiser through motos and semis and taking a 6th in the main.

11X – Richie Dey continue to show off his aerial moves on the track, riding in a stack 15 man class.  On Saturday Richie, took an unfamiliar 7th place due to a miscalculation on the track.  Sunday, Richie came back to make up for Saturday putting a smack down on the class and finishing with a 3rd in the main.

We had a great time as usual in Oldsmar.  Johnny your the best Bro – great race.

Be sure to check us out at the next race.  Okeeheelee BMX for the Florida State Race on February 27-28 and then Desoto Baby for the USAC BMX Championships and the ABA Super Nationals.  See you there.

24/02 One Bicycles at the Blue Mountains

One Bicycles Australia press release
2010 NSW Southern Region Series – Round 1 Blue Mountains
by Miekel Rose

This was Round 1 of a 5 round series for the 2010 NSW State Titles qualifier. Blue Mountains is home club of Justin Beattie, the 11 Boy Pocket Rocket and member of the ONE Bicycles Australia Team. After some conversations and convincing, Justin raced up with his Team mate Nikalus Rose in the 12 boy’s class. This is a red hot class with current W1 Andrew “Andy Mini Me” Hughes challenging all who sit on the gate with him.
Blue Mountains suffer from rained out events more often than not and to counteract this, have concreted the whole track, making it extremely fast and dangerous if you come off.
Mikayla was back on the brand new custom painted ONE Expert and resuming her ongoing battle with W5 Bianca Robertson from the Liverpool Club. Mikayla was on fire winning all 3 motos and coming out in the final of 10 Girls to finish the day with a clean sweep after some very close  battles with Bianca as they usually do. Mikayla also raced 8-10 Boys cruiser racing in some great motos with the boys placing thirds and seconds in the heats and finishing the final in fifth after getting boxed out by the boys in the first corner. Mikayla is a little fighter and a tough little competitor and don’t the boys know it now!
Nik had a bad spill over the gate in practice on Saturday after a technical issue with the PA system caused him to snap before the gate was dropped. Nik was lucky not to lose fingers under the gate which managed to crush his bars and scratch his new frame. Nik was bruised top to toe but came out Sunday with some new bars (thanks Ross Harland) and ready to have a good go at Andy and Justin and the other riders in his class. Nik had Justin in his first two motos and Justin raced every bit like the Australian Champion he is and kept Nik at bay with Andy winning one of those motos, relegating Nik to third after Justin passed him in the third corner. Nik won his third moto and set up for a great final. Nik picked gate 1 and managed to pull an amazing first straight to find himself in second behind Andy in to the first corner with Justin hot on his heels. After an amazingly close race, that is how they finished in 12 Boy’s. Andy 1st, Nik 2nd and Justin an amazing 3rd. Justin had just blown away a number of state plated 12 year old boys and showed he had what it takes to give it to the bigger boys.
Nik was also on fire with his cruiser winning two of his motos and placing second behind Andy in the other. In the final Nik again got a great snap and chased Andy all the way to the line coming a close second and finishing the day on a high.
Josh was back on his bike after a bad fracture of his wrist which had kept him off his new 2010 white ONE Pro XXL for 2 months. This was to be his first event and he was keen to give it a good crack. He rode well in the motos placing in the top 4 and assuring himself of a place in the 15 Boy’s final. An amazing effort seeing he had limited training in the lead up to this season and his fitness was lacking, along with getting used to a brand new bike. In the final Josh rode well until the two triples where he stumbled and was shot out the back and could not get it back placing 8th in the final.
On Cruiser Josh had two other competitors from the ACT to challenge him and like his 20” was getting used to new Wheelset and different gearing after upgrading from 1 3/8 rims to 1.75’s. Josh rode well in the heats with a win, a second and a third. In the final he was winning until the second last straight when he “Buzzed” his pants on the rear tyre, manualling over some small jumps allowing his two rivals to pass him. Josh was disappointed with his final and a silly mistake which gave away a win, but has learnt much from his first ride back.
Thanks to the Beattie family for saving us a commanding view of the track on the third corner and for calming me down after Nik’s accident on the gate. I also like to congratulate Justin for stepping up a class and giving it his all and showing all the skill and speed he has to mix it up with bigger riders. Well done Champ!

Next big event is the Team’s attack of the A.C.T. Championships. We are hoping to catch up with some of the Southern members of the Team at the event and discuss how great our new 2010 ONE “Ultimate One” bikes are and hope they can dominate at the lead up event to this year’s National Championships. See ya all there! Come and check out the bikes. ONE frames are the current Olympic GOLD Medal winning frame and an extraordinary piece of engineering.

22/02 BMX boost with big Supercross track in Brisbane

by bikemedia
BMX has received another boost  with the announcement today by the Minister for Sport, Mr Phil Reeves, that  construction of a world class Supercross track will be built in Brisbane’s south. The $ 1.5 million facility will be the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere and will be built at the Sleeman Sports Complex later this year.

The track will feature a  three story high or 8 metre start ramp which will launch riders onto the 350 – 400m. Riders will reach speeds of up to 60 km/h with 10 metre jumps on some sections.

According to Reeves the BMX facility shows the State Government’s commitment to making the Chandler complex a hub for the local community and also for elite athletes.

National BMX coach, Wade Bootes said the venue would help to raise Australia’s chances at the international World Cup Supercross events and in turn improving our chances of getting maximum riders at the London Olympics in 2012.

“We already have the evidence that preparation on a supercross track has proven more successful for us,” said Bootes.

The sport of BMX has increased in profile internationally since its inclusion as an Olympic sport in Beijing in 2008. BMX Australia has also had unprecedented growth at the grass roots level with membership jumping up by 20 percent in some states.

16/02 Alienation BSX: Fundraising

by bmxultra.com
We have been waiting to finalise the total amount raised from the Alienation BSX, there is still money trickling in, but in the meantime we decided to get the money to the bank early and the Royal Children's Hospital are just as ecstatic as we are. We smashed our past record of $6,235.85, set in 2007. This year we have raised $7,738.80 so far. That's a total raised of over $22,000 since BSX began in 2006.

There are a whole lot of reasons for the success of the event, it's great to have the support of the wider BMX community, and while it could have been easy for riders to stay at home we managed to break records with the rider count at the wettest BSX in history.

On top of the money raised for the Royal Children's Hospital the Cadel Evans jersey went under the hammer and raised $500, that money was donated to the Kinglake West Country Fire Authority.

The popular number plate auction was a big one this year raising $981.10 and it was almost as competitive as the racing. The biggest price tag on a plate was for Simon Anderson's plate at $126.60, Luke Madill's plate was popular too, it went for $100. The only female competitor Ziggy Callan's plate went for $50, more than her brother and event winner Josh Callan, whose plate sold for $40. Event organiser Shane Jenkins' plate sold for $50 as well.

We would like to thank everyone individually for their contributions on the day, but it would take a while. For all that helped on the day and leading up to the event, thank you. For all the riders who came out to ride in crazy conditions, thank you. For the spectators, thank you. And a massive thank you to all of our partners.

We will see you all next January for BSX2011.

About BSX
BSX (Bicycle Supercross) is one-on-one sprint trails style racing on a backyard track built specifically to test a rider's skills. The short straights, lofty jumps and tight corners are very intense under race conditions but also fun for competitors and create quite a lot of entertainment for spectators. The event provides a unique experience for the local Victorian riders, as well as the interstate and international visitors during an off day of the Track Attack series. The events primary function is to raise money for the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation. In just four years the event has raised approximately $15,000 which has provided the hospital with new equipment. Funds have been raised through gate takings, raffles, auctions and donations.

About the Royal Children's Hospital
'The Royal Children's Hospital is the major specialist paediatric hospital in Victoria and provides a full range of clinical services and health promotion and prevention programs for infants through to adolescents. Each year the Royal Children's Hospital treats tens of thousands of children through our Emergency Department, inpatient admissions and outpatient visits. The Royal Children's Hospital Foundation plays a vital role in providing additional funding to support important research projects and purchase state of the art medical equipment to ensure that every child receives the very best treatment now and into the future.

12/02 One Bicycles at the Shepparton Open

One Bicycles Australia press release
The Shepparton Open was on Sunday, it was the first race at the 2010 Australian Championships track so rider count was up nice and high along with the level of competition. The Victorian One Bicycles team members were all there. Kyle Horton was looking very comfortable in the Pro Men when it came to the final though he didn't get such a hot start, it was probably just as well too with a heavy pile up going into the last corner Kyle had just managed to avoid the carnage and was able to cross the line in third place. Chris Van Winden put together another podium finish, placing second in the 25-34 Men's 20" class. Issy Penglase sent her race report in so we'll let her tall you all about her first experience at the Shepparton track.

Shepparton Track Open Meeting and State Team training By Isabella "Issy" Penglase
It was first day of State Team training for 2010 as well as first time Shepparton has been used so we where all very excited

There are four Girls in the Junior State team and we worked with HRV. He got us straight into Jumping all the Tabletops; by the end I was clearing all of them so left that part of training happy.
Gates – I have been getting good gates at a lot of the meeting’s but now with a few pointers from Tony it seems its coming together a lot better, now to work on stopping my double click out of the gate. Dad talked to Tony he said it may be a One Team thing as Kyle does it as well I hope so I want to jump as well as him one day.
The rest of the day was general skills and some work on the Velodrome

Sunday Race day!

The track is awesome and Pro-gate rocks!

We got to the track Early and started getting our gear on, practise went well and kept working on the jumps that I have been hitting in training. I was a little nervous as I had entered 12 BOYS rather than the girls.
Moto 1 the gate dropped and I had a good snap, the first straight is a long long long one and I was over the moon to be equal second at the end of the straight I was pushed a little wide but held my ground and stayed with the two leaders until the line to grab a 3rd
Moto2 and much the same as the first with a few other quick boys out there for me to chase, Moto went well I think a few jumped around me to put me off but I stayed focused and got across the line in 4th
Moto 3 this was a loaded gate and I had to get out and stay with them. I got out and did stay with them and was over the moon to be so close to Cairns,  and Fletcher going into the 3rd straight even though I finished with a low place was a great race to stay as close as that to theses guys.
Sitting around Dad and I where trying to work out if I got into the Semi’s they Richo calls me to the hill for a run off. I was so excited as I haven’t made a semi with the Boys yet and I had a chance.
The gate dropped and I got out well. I held a nice gap all down the first two straights
As I turned the second berm I saw witches hats over the Am straight so just went down and over the Pro section with a roar and clap from the crowd. With a win in the Run Off I had made my first Boys semi final
Semi number 1 – what a race I kept with the guys all over the track and pushed a few up the berm to keep in the mix, coming out of turn 2 and I held a good line but just didn’t have the same power as the guys and they got a wheel in front I pumped hard down the 3rd straight and was just behind Cairns going into the last turn he powered away but I was so happy that I nearly got into my first expert Boys Main. Next time guys I’ll be there.
Thanks again to
Shane – team manager
Eci- Especially Paul, the bike is working Great
Sandy - Utopia Optics watch out for these great goggles coming to shops soon
Also Shepparton club and council for giving us a great track

08/02 bmxultra.com team at the Shepparton Open

bmxultra.com press release
The Shepparton BMX Club will be hosting the 2010 Australian Championships in just a few months. Their first race since UCI's Tom Ritz redesigned and rebuilt the entire track was on Sunday where there were around 300 riders there to check out the track for the very first time.

The track has a super fast and long first straight which is much like a drag strip with a big double before the first corner however it was mostly just the pro riders jumping the double. Don't get me wrong it does have a step up shortly after the bottom of the hill, then a roller, then a rolly double before the double at the end of the straight, but you pedal flat out through them. After that it's mostly rhythm, there is little opportunity to pedal except maybe around the corners. The track feels long and by the end of the first straight riders are gasping for air. The massive corners look great but they are wide open, there will be a lot of mistakes made on the corners and a lot of crazy moves.

Brandan Bullows returned to racing in fine style after a 6 month break. He came out and won his first moto in the Pro class which had enough riders for quarter finals. He then followed that up with a couple of thirds. When it came to the quarter though a bad start cost him dearly, his day came to an abrupt end.

Shepp locals, brothers Levi and Chase Collins also made it through to the quarters a mistake from Levi, on his birthday, cost him a qualifying spot. Chase was struggling with the gate and gave the field too much of a head start, keep an eye out for these guys though, they have a real advantage over the coming months.

Mark Dobson was looking great in the 35-44 cruiser class, staying with the riders at the pointy end and took a convincing third, it looks like the Shepp track really suits Mark.

Jamie Bullows is finding form, he qualified for both the 35-44 cruiser and 20" class mains. A 4th in the 20" main and a 6th in the cruiser final wasn't bad.

Shane Jenkins also in the 35-44 cruiser and 20" was struggling a bit on the cruiser but qualified through to the semi but that's as far as he got. It was a different story in the 20" where Shane was fighting with Brian Alexander all through the motos. The final was no different the race was all the way to the last corner where Jenkins and Alexander collided but Shane took the win.

All in all a good day out for the team.

The bmxultra.com team is proudly supported by One Bicycles, Supercross BMX, Dirt Designs, Tioga, Elite Cycle Imports, THE, Profile, Sun Ringle, and Tektro Brakes.

05/02 One Bicycles at Track Attack/BSX

One Bicycles Australia press release
The Victorian based One Bicycles riders all hit up Track Attack last month. Chris Van Winden was riding well and finished second in the 30-44 mens class. Kyle Horton was really flying in the AA men, he finished a respectable fifth overall in a very competitive class. Issy did well too, but in the tradition of One Bicycles press releases we'll leave it to the team to tell you what went down. Oh but first we had better not forget the massive road trip for Justin Beattie to get down to Victoria to get to the Alienation BSX for the day. The young fella did a great job making it into round 1. Talking about BSX, Chris and Kyle were both in the finals in 2009 but both fell victim to the very slippery track, and had to watch most of the mud fest from the sidelines.

Issy's Track Attack Update by Craig Penglase
Well what a start to the Victorian racing season. Track Attack 2010 done and dusted and a great day racing at Shane’s BSX2010 with some good money going to charity.

Isabella arrived home from holidays with her Mum Friday evening before the start of TA 2010. Her surprise a new polished “One Bicycles” Expert – with a quick spin around the streets to see if set up was correct it was time to hit the sack for a sleep for the coming week.

The new bike must have felt right as Issy’s 2nd lap she was gapping the 3rd straight at South Eastern and looking comfortable on the bike.

Track Attack takes on six meeting’s at the following Eastern region clubs, South Eastern, Lilydale, Knox, Frankston, Park Orchards and Eastfield with Knox and Frankston being run under lights.

Isabella finished the series in 2nd spot after some good close racing. The only disappointment would be the lack of girls riding that Age group. We raced an age up to push Issy along witch Emily and co provided but a small field it was. Ironically it was great to see the size of the 12 girl’s class at all meeting.

We would like to thank Shane - the one Bicycles Team manager
ECI- especially Paul for your help and time and also hope your injury heal quickly to see you back out on the track,
Utopia goggles this is Isabella newest sponsor thanks Sandy we will be sending more info on this great product soon so keep you eyes peeled for it and also come and see us at the track for more information

Cheers good luck to everyone for their 2010 racing season

How to buy One Bicycles products in Australia
If you would like to purchase a One Bicycles frame or accessories in Australia the best way to do so is to head down to your local bike store and place an order. If they don't know what you are talking about tell them to call Elite Cycle Imports while you wait and place your order there and then. After doing some calculations myself I have found the cheapest way to get One Bicycles products in Australia is through a local reseller.

04/02 Video: Alienation BSX finals

by bmxultra.com
Well you probably know by now that there was plenty of crash action at the wet and wild Alienation BSX. Once again, thanks to the guys at AIRSHO, we had scaffold and a couple of video cameras set up (this time HD cameras, thanks to Gavin D for the loan). We captured all the action from a great vantage point. In an attempt to get the DVD out early this year we have got the finals together already, we'll be taking feedback then moving forward with the DVD.

The video includes all finals

The video is available in a number of formats, they are very large downloads, all are high quality so it's worth it.

Each year the Royal Children's Hospital treats tens of thousands of children through our Emergency Department, inpatient admissions and outpatient visits. 03/02 Former BMX World Champion appointed coach at World Cycling Centre

UCI press release
Former BMX World Champion, Thomas Allier, will join the coaching staff at the World Cycling Centre (WCC) in Aigle, Switzerland, from February 1st.

The French athlete, 34 years, will be responsible for the WCC’s high level BMX trainees as well as young athletes training for the first Youth Olympic Games, which will take place in Singapore in August. He will also coach a number of less experienced riders who form a “development” group.

Thomas Allier was BMX Juniors World Champion in 1994, before taking the World Elite title in 1998 and 2000. He also has five European BMX titles and six French National titles to his name as well as various victories in the United States.

After the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, where he reached the quarter finals, Thomas Allier retired from competition to concentrate on coaching. At the WCC he will join the coaches for the other three Olympic cycling disciplines (road, track and mountain bike).

WCC Director Frédéric Magné is delighted to welcome the new member of the coaching team: “We are very fortunate to have him on the team. The athletes will benefit from a former high level athlete who will be able to use his expertise and competition experience to help them develop.”

The high level training BMX course at the WCC will begin on March 15th, bringing together an international group of talented athletes. The main goal of the course will be the UCI BMX World Championships in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, from 29th July to 1st August.

02/02 Alienation BSX: Race report

by bmxultra.com
The Alienation BSX, short for Bicycle Supercross or some might suggest Backyard Supercross, is a One on One charity event run at the bmxultra.com compound at Pheasant Creek, nestled in the Kinglake ranges 60kms North East of Melbourne’s CBD. The Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation are the primary beneficiary of the event, however we also help raise money for the Kinglake West CFA (Country Fire Authorite). With the event held in January, the peak of the Aussie summer, you would expect great weather, but BSX history has proved you need to be prepared for anything. We thought we had seen it all. When there's rain, normally it would clear mid morning to a beautiful sunny day, everything would dry up the skies would turn blue and everything would be perfect. Normally.

Luke Madill at BSX2010The BSX has become an institution. An event by riders for riders, and the spectators get a whole lot out of it too, not only with the action packed racing on the track but with all the fundraising activities as well. The event has attracted riders from Canada, New Zealand and all over Australia, including the likes of Sarah Walker, Tanya Bailey, Lauren Reynolds, Ziggy Callan. Sam Willoughby, Luke Madill, Jamie Gray, Michael Robinson, Michael Fenwick, Khalen Young, Glenn Codega, Alex Cameron, 80’s legend Jamie Hales and a whole lot of others. Even professional wrestler Joey Russell Junior came along to race this year.

There have been just 3 winners in the hotly contested Open Men's class over the past four years. Luke Madill took the wins in 2006 and 2007, Josh Callan won in 2008 and Scott Lacey in 2009. All three past champions returned for BSX2010, Luke Madill making a special trip to squeeze BSX in only a couple of days after becoming the Australian 4X champion, yet again. There were also a bunch of talented young riders who were expected to keep the past champions honest included Kyle Horton, Tom Siinmaa, Levi Collins, Jonathan Hoare, Connor Hunter, Luke Pretlove and Ryan Henderson, just to name a few. An in form Bodi Turner was a dark horse for the event. But each of them would have to make it all the way through eliminations in a record breaking field of 39 riders. Ziggy Callan was the only woman to put on her flat pedals for the day, she loves BSX and decided to take on the guys since there was no class for her.

The 30 & Over Open wheel class also broke attendance records with 14 riders. There was a push for a round of 16, but fell just two riders short. Simon Anderson was there to attempt to take an unprecedented fourth straight BSX win, but Tony Harvey wasn’t going to give Simon a run for his money. Other contenders included Shane Jenkins, who was looking for his fourth podium in a row, Chris Van Winden who’d made a few BSX finals now, Craig Walczuk, Jamie Bullows, Simon Trewin and Paul Knox who made the top eight last year. Throw in the interstate riders Paul Tomkinson, Craig Manual, Jason Eecen, Jim Beattie and pro wrestler Joey Russell Junior (aka Craig Austin) and let's not forget BSX first timer Peter Stagg.

When people started to arrive at the Alienation BSX the rain was still falling and the track was still under wraps, but the forecast didn't look good. Actually we had to abandon the idea of using transponders for timing because if we had got water in the start box it could have shorted everything out, so it was back to the old school, a stop watch.

The start of the event was delayed a while so the track was given time to dry. Lucky the Kinglake West CFA had setup early, they kept punters fed and warm until practice eventually started.

The track was a little slick at the start of practice but was drying up nicely through the session. The carpet certainly helped riders get some grip around the slick corners. Since most riders seem to run slick tyres no one was going particularly quick in the shortened practice session, so no one really stood out. Young Hayden Fletcher was hitting up the jumps and pulling some big airs, he seemed to be the only guy to really have fun with it during the practice session.

Time trials

By the time the time trials were on the track had dried significantly. Luke Madill put in a hot time early, but the crowd were quiet. It wasn’t until Hayden Fletcher put in a great run boosting the first two straights that the crowd started to get into it. The time trials were pretty much incident free until Lachie Tye's run. He did manage to get in a good lap until he launched off the last corner for quite possibly the crash of the day. Ziggy Callan, the only woman game enough to get her bike out put in a great run too, proving she can hang with the boys. In the end it was Josh Callan who got the fastest lap in followed by Kyle Horton, Luke Madill and Scott Lacey.

In the 30 & Over men, Paul Knox put in a smooth run to qualify in the top 8 knocking out previous finalist Chris Van Winden and former Australian Champion Jamie Bullows to name a few. In the last timed run of the day Jim Beattie got a good snap but when manualling through the first doubles seemed to put his front wheel down a little early and since it was pointing off to the side of the track he followed and went down into a flat spin. He got up with a smile on his face and continued his run. Simon Anderson took the fastest lap with Tony Harvey in second followed by Shane Jenkins and Paul Tomkinson.

During the presentation of the BSX race plates the rain started up again, and then hail! It was brief but enough to give the track another good soaking. The sun came out again shortly afterwards and it was on to the eliminations.
