31/08 American Bicycle Association Unveils new iPhone App

Gilbert, Arizona - The American Bicycle Association (ABA) officially unveiled their new iPhone App today.  “Over 13,000 downloads of the application occurred during the 90 days of beta testing and the feedback was incredible.  With technology advancing at a rapid pace, we want to stay in the forefront,” stated ABA CEO, B.A. Anderson.  “For some time we have been delivering moto sheets via our wireless network at National events.  Now with the new iPhone App it will be even easier.”  This application is an answer to the request of many of our members.  With the weekly airing of the television show on Versus, a monthly print publication, and the new iPhone app, the ABA is reaching out to audiences outside of our membership base to make every effort possible to grow the sport of BMX racing,” continued Anderson.

The iPhone App is available as a free download at the iTunes Store.  “I am sure we will be adding even more features to the app to meet the needs of our members,” said Anderson.  The new ABA iPhone App includes news releases, schedules, track directory with directions, points, a current rulebook, and a direct link to moto sheets at national events.

The JAG BMX Global Championship is 4 events in one, a Concert and Vintage BMX Show, Pro Extravaganza $25,000. Race, Amateur Global Championship, and Old School BMX Racing, all wrapped into one 5 day exciting, action packed, thrill loaded, fun filled, gift giving, and international media filled event.  TV sports, and print crews, are already gearing up from around the world to attend this exciting Racing series, featuring Pedal Power.  Youngsters, and not so young competitors from 170 Countries, and all 50 states, have been invited to attend and compete at Coca-Cola Pavilion, Destination Daytona.

30/08 Alienation Riders Take on The World

The biggest BMX race of the year, the UCI BMX World Championships took place in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. That means many riders from all over the world were there represent their respective countries. That also means that a TON of Alienation BMX riders were there showing off their mad skills and fresh products for the big show.

We would like to start off with Swatch's own New Zealander, Marc Willers, who is on a huge comeback. Willers showed what he can do when he's fully healthy and on a mission in Qualifying rounds Marc pulled a 1st, 2nd, 3rd which put him into a stacked quarterfinals He pulled a 3rd in quarter finals which set him up for the main event. With the stacked Main event Willers came out 3rd into the first turn and with a crash ended up with a World 6 title. Congrats Marc for representing well at the worlds!

Alienation has some of the best Elite Women representing the company and you can't go wrong when you're repping ALIENATION! What a elite women's main event!!!  New Zealand's Sarah Walker rode very consistent as she put her wheels into a 2nd, 2nd, 2nd in qualifying rounds looking really fast, that brought up semis for the top 16 girls and Sarah ended up with a 3rd in a very stacked Semi. In the Main she had a very fast first straight, after the race Sarah was all smiles as she got the WORLD 2 title.

USA's/Intense's Arielle Martin always reps the country in good fashion, also riding consistent in qualifying rounds she pulled a 2nd, 3rd, 2nd in qualifying rounds, and in the semi she pulled a 2nd. In the Main event which any of the 8 girls could of won, she was running 3rd looking for a podium finish, and she went down in the first corner, tough luck for Arielle, but she will be back as you know she's tough! She ended up with a World 8 title. Thanks Arielle for always being a class act and representing the company so well!!

Colombia's Mariana Pajon is always one of the girls to beat she raced both class and cruiser and was looking for two titles. Mariana looked really good in qualifying rounds by not losing a lap she pulled a 1st, 1st, 1st in motos. Looking like the girl to beat Mariana was in 8th out of the first turn and pulled to 5th, looking for one spot to give bonked the on the 4th straight rhythm and ended her run for the Elite Woman title. She also raced Elite Woman Cruiser which she pulled WORLD 1. Congratulations on your success.

Caroline Buchanan from Australia puts in the time and work, and is always 100 percent ready to race. If its Downhill, Fourcross or BMX she gets the job done. In her three qualifying rounds she was 1 of the 3 girls to have a perfect going into semi finals with a 1st, 1st, 1st. In her semi she seemed to have a late gate then clip out mid way down the starting hill causing her not to jump the first double, so it put her behind and she did not transfer out of semis with a 8. Tough luck for Caroline, but we all know what a great and skillful rider she is, so look for her to hit it hard on her way to an Olympic qualifying berth.

Another Australian Lauren Reynolds rode well for her country and had some tough luck in semi's. In qualifying Lauren pulled a 1st, 2nd, 2nd in her 3 rounds, also in the two crazy semi's Lauren got a 5th and did not transfer to the Main event. We all know as a rider a 5th in a semi can hurt, but Lauren is strong and has a great attitude and has fun riding her bike. She trains hard and most certainly should of been in the main event. Thanks for representing Alienation so well Lauren!

The third and final Australian representing Alienation was Rachel Bracken. Rachel is one of the well known Elite riders across the world and she showed it in South Africa. Rachel pulled a 5th, 4th, 3rd in her 3 rounds just making it out of qualifying. In her stacked semi she got a 4th to transfer to the Main event. In the Main event Bracken pulled a World 6 title.

USA'S/Supercross's Nate Padilla has been pushing it hard at the JDP series and has been at the Olympic Training Center putting in some nice work as you can tell on the track. Nate is a very hard worker, and it shows as one of ABA'S top junior development rider and also reps the camps very well out at Chula. Congratulations Nate on a WORLD number  1 sixteen expert title your most certainly deserve it. Thanks for representing the best!

They call him Frank "The Tank" Hoskins and man is he a character. He represents Addison Bikes' and might be one of the funniest laid back guy you will meet in BMX today. Frank went to South Africa as just recently turned up to the 25-29 class so he had some tough comp on his hands. Well all know Frank can get the job done though. Frank came back to the USA with a World number 4. Congrats Frank!! Represented USA very well. Catch frank at his home track in Louisville Kentucky for the NBL Grand Nationals.

USA'S Cody Wilson pulled a World number 6. Congratulations man!

Dan's Comp/USA's Scott Moreland pulled a World number 5 in the 30 and over Men's cruiser class.

Who could forget Big Daddy GT'S/USA's Eric Rupe he's been in the sport for years and man I don't know about you, but Eric is a man you can always look up to and ask for any advice. He pulled a WORLD number 1 in the 45 and over cruiser class.

All in all, a GREAT week of racers sportin' Alienation BMX gear, be on the lookout for new riders catchin' the vibe, and new product comin' down the track!

25/08 One Bicycles Australia at Macarthur Open (NSW Dynamite Series Round)

The kids were keen to get some riding under their belts due to the ongoing wet weather in the Nation’s Capital, so we decided to drive up to Sydney and enter the Open event at the Macarthur Track. This was also a round of the Dynamite Series for the NSW riders, which meant any rider wanting to represent the state at the Aussies in 2011 would be there. The track was well groomed and ready for racing. The Macarthur event had 300 entries which is a good turnout!

Mikayla Rose was hoping to renew her rivalry with Liverpool Club rider Bianca Robertson, but Bianca wasn’t entered. Mikayla got to race her friends Renee and Zoe. Though the Class was small, Mikayla was told to go out hard and put in an effort no matter what and rode extremely well taking a comfortable win in her three motos. In the final Mikayla also went out hard and continued her winning ways, with a comfortable win. This was a fun event for her as it was her 10th birthday and she just wanted to ride!

Nikalus Rose had some great competitors show up to contest the 12 boys, with current 1A Andy Hughes there along with 8A Brock Griffiths. As this was an age group nominated for the Dynamite Series, most of the well known riders were there to compete for their spot on the NSW Team. Nik was there to have some fun and get a ride in! In his heats Nik was riding well with a First, Second and a Third. This was enough to get Nik in to the Semis. He rode well in the semi and placed second behind Andy Hughes, The Final was stacked with National and State plated riders. Nik took gate 1 and was hoping for a good gate to get out with the leaders and not get shut down in the first corner. Andy got the holeshot, but Nik battled with Brock for the second spot as they hit the first corner, with Nik getting ahead of Brock and Brody Moore to sit in second. This is how they finished over the stripe with Andy winning from Nik, Brock and Brody. It was some great racing and a good run for Nik as he had little bike time in the lead up to the event.

Josh Rose only had 5 riders in his 15 boys class but wanted to ride hard and try and make podium, Josh has recently picked up his training again in his lead up to the NSW Title. In his first race he got a bad start and came out in fourth and that is where he finished. In the second and third heats he picked up his game and finished third. All he needed was a third in the final for a third overall. In his final he drew lane 8 and had his mate Angus Easthope right next to him. Aidan Vahtrik was in lane 3, Jordan Butler in lane 1 with Ben Lawton in lane four. The gate dropped and Josh and Angus came out fast and headed straight for lane three. The first straight at Macarthur tapers heaps to the first corner. As they hit the first corner Josh was in Third and held that all the way to the stripe for a third overall on the day. A great effort by Josh, even in a small class.

Justin Beattie has had a huge year. He has struggled to find his sweet spot after a big crash earlier in the year and has also jumped on to a 2010 ONE Ultimate one pro frame from his expert. Justin’s dad Jim has been searching for the right gearing for Justin in preparation for the upcoming N.S.W. State Titles and more importantly NZ leg of the Mighty 11’s. Justin and his team mates Nik and Josh trained on the gate at Macarthur on Saturday and Justin was not a happy lad with the setup. Justin and Jim discussed options and on Sunday he came out in the 11 Boys and blew them apart. In all his motos, Justin was never touched. He looked smooth, quick and comfortable. In the Final Justin rode a steady race and secured the number one spot for the class on the day. An awesome result!

The N.S.W. contingent of the ONE Bicycles Australia Team is looking strong in the lead up to the N.S.W. Titles in Tamworth in a months time. All the kids are getting together for training and enjoying pushing each other and having fun which is the most important thing.

The Rose kids would like to thank Wayne Hughes for getting us a prime spot on the first corner to watch the racing. I would like to thank Craig Fisher for his ongoing coaching support and training program and to Luke Madill for some great advice and training tips for the kids, it is truly appreciated. I would also like to thank the kid’s mum Kaylene who made us enter the kids for the competition and they had a ball.

As always the kids are so very grateful for the ongoing support of their Manager, Shane Jenkins and sponsors ONE Bicycles and ECI. We hope that the results keep coming for the Team and show why ONE Bicycles are #1 in BMX.

24/08 BSX2011 update

BSX (short for Bicycle Supercross, and is often referred to as Backyard Supercross) is a Royal Children's Hospital fund raiser. It will be on again on Monday 17 January 2011 (during Track Attack). It will be the sixth running of the one on one backyard BMX race. BSX is the longest running event of it's kind in the world and draws a large number of competitors from around Australia. The event has pulled a few international visitors and a number of Olympians.

The 2011 poster for the event has been finalised. It features Luke Madill (left) who won the event in 2006 and 2007 and Josh Callan (right) who won in 2008 and 2010.

We plan to do some extra marketing and use images of Simon Anderson (four times 30 & Over winner) and Ziggy Callan (fastest female on the track many times) who are also very much a part of the event.

As we add partners the supported by area will be updated. So if you are interested in being a part of a very unique event and becoming a partner read the partner opportunities section below.

Go ahead and print it out and put it on your fridge, put it in your bmx club newsletter, put it on your facebook page, whatever, just spread the word.

Working bee/Track updates
We have big plans for track changes over the coming months. If you are able to help swing a shovel, drive a bobcat/dingo or just help ride the track and roll the new changes in then keep an eye out for up coming working bees. On that note a quick shout out and thanks to Aaron Rogers for his help a couple of weeks ago.

Volunteers needed
We will also need some new volunteers for administration leading up to the event as well as running the event on the day. Jobs include parking attendants, ticket sales on the gate, taking entries, selling raffle tickets, manning the silent auctions, track maintenance and so on.

Riders
If you are interested in the event drop us an email webmaster@bmxultra.com to help us determine how many riders to expect.

We need to know:

  • Open men
  • Open women
  • 30 & Over Open wheel
• where you are from (City & State)
• and your name.

Generally we end up with 32+ riders in the Open mens class, about 12 in the 30 & Over open wheel and 2-4 Open women. But there is plenty of room for more.

About BSX
BSX (Bicycle Supercross) is one-on-one sprint trails style racing on a backyard track built specifically to test a rider's skills. The short straights, lofty jumps and tight corners are very intense under race conditions but also fun for competitors and create quite a lot of entertainment for spectators. The event provides a unique experience for the local Victorian riders, as well as the interstate and international visitors during an off day of the Track Attack series. The events primary function is to raise money for the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation. In just five years the event has raised approximately $22,000 which has provided the hospital with new equipment. Funds have been raised through gate takings, raffles, auctions and donations.

23/08 Photos: AUSBIKE Melbourne

We were down at the Melbourne Show grounds for AUSBIKE yesterday to check out the latest in BMX race equipment, but there wasn't a great deal down there. There was a pretty big BMX contingent last year but that seems to have dwindles somewhat, so we thought we would make the most of what was there.

As far as BMX race specific stuff there was a Staats stand which had some of the Staats frames that we have seen around the track for a while plus some brand spanking new frames. The new frames have been lowered quite a bit, they have a built in seat clamp and some very unique adjustable rear dropouts that look a lot more like replaceable rear deraileur hangers at first glance. The chrome plated chromo Whip was the most eye catching, we'd love to be able to take one of those for a spin. Ciari parts have always been associated with Staats, they were there too. They had bars, forks, hubs (freewheel), cranks, chainrings, and stems. The colours were quite vivid, everything was pretty damn light and impressive too.

Another nice stop was over at the DK stand where we caught up with Corey Stafford. They had quite a lot more to display than I thought they had. I was impressed with the very affordable Sentry 20 & 24, a complete entry level bike that has a 6061 alloy frame and cromo forks and bars. A great bike for people to get started in BMX racing. There were also the Mini, Junior and Expert completes which looked like the Professional frame that the DK pros are all riding. On top of that the Professional frame was on display, along with the Crazy 8 bars, RT cromo forks, stems (front and top loader), cromo 3 piece social cranks, alloy 2 piece DK Flash cranks and Alpha hubs. I also saw the DK Golf bag, I was traveling a lot in the US a few years ago for work and getting some racing in while I was there, I would have saved hundreds of dollars, maybe over a thousand, if I had one of those bags. They charge about $100 per domestic flight for a bike, but golf equipment is free?

Beyond that we checked out the new range from SE, not a whole lot changes over at SE, new colours and some small tweak, it looks like the new bikes are stock with Tioga PowerBlock tires for 2011.

We also had a closer look at the GT Speed Series bikes, I'm not a fan of the curved frames but I am sure that these are going to be a very popular bike for the 2011 season.

We also took a look at the 510 shoes, which I have heard flat pedal mountain bikers rave about, the super grippy sole is supposed to be so good that it feels like you are clipped in on flat pedals. There was even a version for those of you who are clipped in.

We also checked out JetBlack who have a whole bunch of generic grips, headsets, outboard bottom brackets, flat pedals, but their range also includes 661 which offer a whole lot of protection from helmets, to elbow and knee/shin guards to gloves. They also had some nice looking Royal shorts for the BMXers taking advantage of the UCI rule allowing shorts with knee/shin guards.

Then it was over to see what BMX stuff FSA had, they also had a bunch of generic stuff, including headsets, even ceramic versions, and the outboard bottom brackets. That was over at SVC imports, they also had Atomlab stuff on display.

We saw some nice looking pedals from Canadian mountain bike company Straightline, well worth checking out.

One of the big things at the show was kids bikes for the 1-5 year olds, with no cranks and pedals, to get kids started riding early. The Strider, who are associated with the ABA were there in all their bright colours.

One of my favourite stands from last year was back. The guys from Eureka Brands have one of the biggest ranges of street helmets I have ever seen, made by Nutcase, with designs to suit everyone. I really have to decide which one I want and get myself one. Decisions... decisions... They also have a great little wooden kids bike called an Early Rider, there is no doubt there would be nothing cooler for a youngster than learning to ride a BMX track on one of these things, fun and street cred to spare. They have so much class and style and look built to last.

20/08 Morphine Industries’ Young Guns Hit Peachtree City

With the NBL Grands around the corner, two of our young guns hit Peachtree City for a last chance tune-up before heading to Louisville. 

When you head to Georgia at this time of year there is one thing you can count on heat.  Peachtree City did not disappoint as we rolled into town and hit the track on Friday. Before practice, Super X Jason LaRev held a clinic to mold the little minds of BMX with his expertise and knowledge along with the help of Noah Reeves.  Practice was open and the race was looking to have a low turn out as practice ended and attendance was minimal. 

However, when Saturday rolled around the moto count hit just above 90 to everyone’s surprise.  The day was looking up but Mother Nature had other plans with rain due to hit the track at some point during the day.  The crew decided to call a two moto transfer to try and beat the rain but it did not happen as the race was delayed just as the main events started.  After a few hours of lounging the call came in and the race resumed.  With the weather on a repeat performance for Sunday, the two moto transfer direction was taken.               

13X – Noah Reeves had two racks of riders and started his day off asleep at the gate due to an all night road trip from south Florida the day before.  He quickly redeemed himself on the remaining motos taking the wins.  Main time found Noah going wire to wire to take the top spot.

Sunday found Noah at the head of the pack.  No sleeping today.  Sweeping his motos and finishing the day with another top spot in the main.

11X – Richie Dey was in his element with plenty of air to be had on the Peachtree City track.  He displayed his air and ability from the front of the pack all day Saturday with a perfect run in the motos and a top spot in the main.

Sunday found Richie at the front once again.  He led the class from start to finish in his motos and continued on the through the main with a first place finish.

The Morphine Crew will be rolling into Louisville in a few weeks to put an assault on the  NBL Grands.  Be sure to come by and check us out.

In the lead up the Bendigo Gold Rush was shaping up to be a great race meeting with a good rider count set to race. But they fell victim to rainfall in the early morning of the event that made the track slippery and wet. To the credit of the club they soldiered on and ran the race right through to the end.

bmxultra.com's newest team member, Kyle Horton, is a local at Bendigo, and showed his track advantage in the 16 strong Pro field. In the main Kyle got off to an early lead but was t-boned and lost his footing forcing him to settle for second which isn't a bad effort.

Brandan Bullows, formerly from Bendigo, was also in the pro field, he qualified comfortably for the main and finished a respectable sixth place.

Next stop for the bmxultra.com crew is at the Shepparton GV Classic in just under 2 weeks.

17/08 Brock Tuckerman and GT news

We were talking to Brock Tuckerman yesterday and he had some news to share. He's just signed a deal with CSG (Cycling Sports Group) and GT Australia to ride for them for the 2010-2011 seasons. 

Brock will be aboard the NEW GT Speed Series XL anytime soon.

Brock explained that a lot is happening at GT for 2010, the famous ULTRABOX and ULTRABOX 2 Carbon are no longer and have been taken over by the above mentioned SPEED SERIES. The speed series will be available in a PRO and PRO XL as completes and in a PRO XXL and PRO CRUISER framesets. The complete speed series will run Alienation rims, Truvativ cranks and a completly redesigned frame which has had geometry input from Joey Bradford for the Pro, XL and Mike Day for the XXL. Weight is similar to what the Carbon Ultrabox was. GT will also continue the POWER SERIES range which will be very similar to this years bikes with new and improved colours.

16/08 The ABA announces new Managing Editor of BMXer magazine

Gilbert, Arizona - The American Bicycle Association (ABA) announced today its appointment of Alex Kienlen as Managing Editor of its BMXer magazine.

Kienlen, long time BMX racer, track volunteer, and columnist for the magazine will move into this new role overseeing production and content of BMXer. The magazine is produced monthly by the sanction. 

“I’m honored, excited and absolutely stoked for this opportunity to increase my contribution to the BMX community, and to do so as a member of the ABA team,” Kienlen said. “BMXer has always been a touchstone for myself and my family for all things BMX, and to be able to move into the Managing Editor role is a great opportunity and honor.” 

“The BMXer has been a part of the ABA from the beginning”, BA Anderson, ABA CEO said. “The magazine has grown with the organization and seen many changes through the years.  As we continue to meet the demands of our members, sponsors, and fans it is important that we continue to commit resources to ensuring that we stay at the forefront of the sport.  Hiring Alex as the Managing Editor of the BMXer will expand the staff of the magazine and help us produce a better product.  We are excited that Alex has agreed to join us and look forward to the changes to come.” 

Kienlen has been active in journalism for the last 20 years, including publication of freelance news and feature articles for various publications from his Conway, Arkansas, home. He took up BMX racing shortly after completing the Journalism MA program at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock 11 years ago, and continues to race BMX weekly at area tracks, as well as participating in regional and national BMX competition. He has acted as a track operator of an ABA-sanctioned track, and continues to volunteer his time operating a local track, Bonzai BMX in North Little Rock, Arkansas, with roles including mentoring and resource management. 

“Best sport in the world,” Kienlen said, about his involvement in BMX. “What BMX does for people, for families, and at the same time just being flat-out fun, is an absolute joy.”

Kienlen has assumed managing editor duties beginning with the publication of the August edition of BMXer.

10/08 National BMX Hall Of Fame 2010 Inductees Announced

Pioneer BMX Racer - Tim Judge
TJ was one of the top stars on the East Coast in the mid 1970s. His fame expanded exponentially after winning the 1981 Jag World Champion title and getting picked up by the legendary Hutch BMX Factory Team. At Hutch, he added a 1983 IBMXF Cruiser World Title to his list of accomplishments. Tim`s BMX experience played a pivotal role in his post-BMX career, when he became an internationally-known racer and mechanic in the Jet Watercraft (JetSki) industry.

BMX Racer - Steve Veltman
The first rider to win the ABA National Number One Amateur and Cruiser titles in the same year (1982), Steve Veltman also stacked up two Jag World Championship Age Group titles, and two IBMXF world age group titles in his amateur career, and was an Elite Cruiser Bronze Medalist at the 1989 World Championships. As a professional, Steve won both the NBL and ABA Grandnationals, and the 1993 ABA National Number One Pro title. He competed in three X Games and raced in the top class for 15 years, retiring in 2004. Steve is the only BMX racer to have ever appeared on a Wheaties cereal box.

BMX Industry - Craig "gOrk" Barrette
Few industries have a person so well known and respected that one name suffices in identifying them. In BMX, it`s "gOrk." As someone who has raced at a national level (UBR national number one sidehack three year running), rode and promoted freestyle shows, worked in the warehouse at CW Racing, and served as editor of both the iconic "BMX Action" and the ABA`s BMXer Magazines, he has made his mark on nearly every era of our sport. In 1999, after 10 years with ABA, gOrk moved to the Pacific Northwest to join Seattle Bike Supply as the Director of Marketing for their flagship brand, Redline. He remains in that role today.

BMX Freestyler - Woody Itson
Most people had their first exposure to Woody Itson in BMX Action`s "Hot Shots" feature, as he blasted an impossibly high air at the Big O Skatepark. This racer-turned-freestyler wowed crowds all over the nation on tour for Vans Tennis Shoes, but it was his riding for Hutch BMX Products that made him a household name. He designed the Hutch Trick Star, one of the most popular bikes of the day, and captured both an AFA and an NFA National Title for Flatland in 1985 ands 1986, respectively. As half of the Diamond Back Freestyle Team, he was "Mr. Flatland" to the "Mr. Air" of Mike Dominguez. After a break to attend college, Woody hung up his riding uniform, and became Freestyle Program Director for the megawatt GT Freestyle Team, where he stayed until 2001. Soon after, he started his current company, Satellite Sports Group, and has since been managing a crew of riders who perform BMX Freestyle shows at over 500 venues each year.

Special Recognition - Linda Dorsey
In honoring someone for whom the sharpest wit and cleverest turn of phrase was as natural as green on grass, words are difficult to wrangle when talking about legendary announcer, Linda Dorsey. Her son, Bryan, probably summed it up as well as any of us could, saying, simply, "BMX was her life." During her three-decades on the mic, Linda was a fixture on the NBL National circuit, served on the NBL Board of Directors, and brought her voice to France and Japan, among other places motos were posted. Linda passed away from cancer in 2008, but announced BMX races with the same fire and passion until three months before the end of her life.

Special Recognition - Al Fritz, father of the Schwinn Sting-Ray
Starting on the welding line of Schwinn`s landmark Kostner Avenue plant in Chicago, Al Fritz worked his way up from the factory floor in 1945, to become the number two man and a member of the Board of Directors at Schwinn Bicycle Company. During a chance Saturday phone call in 1963, a West Coast sales rep told him of a "goofy" fad out there, where kids were "buying used 20" bikes and equipping them with Texas Longhorn handlebars." That Saturday morning phone call planted the seed for a project Mr. Fritz would rapidly prototype, and ultimately launch as the Schwinn Sting-Ray. Every BMX bike on today`s track and trails can trace its roots directly to that first Sting-Ray, built by Al Fritz in the winter of 1963.

10/08 ABA contributes $35,000 to USA Cycling through the Junior Development Program

Gilbert, Arizona - In the first year of operating the USA Cycling Junior Development Races, the American Bicycle Association (ABA) contributed $35,000 to USA Cycling to further support BMX.  “We believe that this program has contributed significantly to the development of our young athletes and are pleased to be able to make this contribution to USA Cycling,” stated ABA CEO, BA Anderson.

Through local races and its national series, the ABA had more than 200 young men and women compete in Junior Development races.  The USA Cycling BMX Junior Development Program (JDP) Series is designed to take our next generation of young talented amateur BMX athletes to the highest level of BMX racing.  The goal of the program is to prepare this group by allowing unprecedented access to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California.  The program is targeting all 15 and 16 year olds using the 2011 UCI BMX calendar.  The 2011 UCI BMX calendar begins at the conclusion of every BMX World Championships from August 1st to July 31st of each year.  The athletes in the JDP Series compete for the opportunity to receive specific high performance training for BMX, access to the Supercross World Cup BMX track, and to experience a day in the life of a U.S. Olympic athlete.  This will help familiarize them with the bigger, faster, and more demanding style of BMX racing, which is contested at the UCI Supercross World Cup series, the World Championships, and the Olympic Games.  Furthermore, by providing these opportunities, we hope to progress the skill level needed to be competitive at the highest level of international BMX competition. 

“The partnership and support from the ABA has helped to ensure that Americans will remain on top of the sport of BMX for years to come,” said USA Cycling Chief Executive Officer Steve Johnson. “With support from organizations like the ABA and Intense BMX the USA Cycling Junior Development Program will continue to thrive and cultivate the next crop of Olympic and World Champions.”

The American Bicycle Association (ABA) has been involved in sanctioning BMX racing for over 30 years.  In January of 2009, the ABA began hosting and promoting International Cycling Union (UCI) races in the United States through the authority of USA Cycling.  The partnership with USA Cycling lead to the development of the USA Cycling Junior Development Series.  Understanding the importance of developing young athletes and the importance of providing funding to support the U.S. athletes the ABA worked closely with the coaches and staff at USA Cycling to develop and promote this series.  “Having seen many of the riders in the JDP Series when they began their careers at age 5 or 6 and now seeing them compete at the highest level is rewarding,” stated Anderson.  “The BMX Olympic athletes from the 2008 games all grew up racing at ABA races.  Now with the advent of the JDP Series the next generation can benefit from the coaching and training expertise provided at the Olympic Training Center.”

09/08 Kamakazi signs with HRVfitness

Australian Olympian Kamakazi has now signed with HRVfitness. The 3 time Elite Australian champion is getting ready for his 2012 Olympic campaign and HRVfitness will be along for the ride.

Kamakazi has recently finished his Olympic training track in his back yard along with a single lane 6 meter high starting hill.

HRVfitness and Elite Cycle imports has also managed to sign a deal with S and M bikes for Kama. He will be riding a new .38 special full of S and M accessories.

His first major race will be the HRV Classic to be held in Victoria December 12th at Park Orchards BMX Track.

06/08 BSX2011 - we're at it again

BSX (short for Bicycle Supercross, and is often referred to as Backyard Supercross) is a Royal Children's Hospital fund raiser. It will be on again on Monday 17 January 2011 (during Track Attack). It will be the sixth running of the one on one backyard BMX race. BSX is the longest running event of it's kind in the world and draws a large number of competitors from around Australia. The event has pulled a few international visitors and a number of Olympians.

Working bee this Sunday/Track updates
We have big plans for track changes over the coming months. If you are able to help swing a shovel, drive a bobcat/dingo or just help ride the track and roll the new changes in then keep an eye out for up coming working bees.

We will be having a quick clean up and start to shape the new changes this Sunday August 8 from 12 to 4pm, it looks like the weather gods will be kind this weekend, but the track might still be too damp and slippery to ride unless you have some carpet laying around, if that's the case bring it with you and you should get some riding in.

Volunteers needed
We will also need some new volunteers for administration leading up to the event as well as running the event on the day. Jobs include parking attendants, ticket sales on the gate, taking entries, selling raffle tickets, manning the silent auctions, track maintenance and so on.

About BSX
BSX (Bicycle Supercross) is one-on-one sprint trails style racing on a backyard track built specifically to test a rider's skills. The short straights, lofty jumps and tight corners are very intense under race conditions but also fun for competitors and create quite a lot of entertainment for spectators. The event provides a unique experience for the local Victorian riders, as well as the interstate and international visitors during an off day of the Track Attack series. The events primary function is to raise money for the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation. In just five years the event has raised approximately $22,000 which has provided the hospital with new equipment. Funds have been raised through gate takings, raffles, auctions and donations.

05/08 Morphine Industries' "Nugget" Recaps Badger State Nationals

We rolled into Wisconsin Rapids on Friday to find the track in great condition and ready to ride.  Lets see, nice sized starting hill, long first straight, some big jumps, and some technical rhythm sections - ooh yeah its gonna be a good weekend.

After saddling up my Haro, I hit the track for Friday practice getting a chance to dial in  my lines and shred the track.

Saturday morning practice rolls around and right about the time our group was ready to go up, it starts raining, accompanied by thunder and lightning. Practice was postponed for roughly an hour until the skies cleared.  Practice got back underway after the track got prepped.

Racing could not come soon enough. In 19-27X, I went wire to wire on motos and semis on Saturday.  The moto gods gave me an outside gate in the main.  Up for the challenge I snapped the gate drop and lead from gate to finish for the win.

Sunday morning brought beautiful sunny skies and perfect conditions for racing. I felt it was going to be another good day for me and well not so sure for everyone else.   I started off the day winning motos in open and class followed with a 2nd in the class semi.   The day rounded out with a win in 17 and over open main event and doubling with another podium top spot in 19-27X class.

It was an amazing track and  Central Wisconsin BMX, located in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin put on a great race weekend. Hopefully sometime in the future they will get the chance to hold a “bigger” race because it’s definitely a high calibre track.

04/08 Kyle Horton joins team bmxultra.com

We told you a little while back that we would be adding a Junior Elite rider to the bmxultra.com team, and we are very excited to finally make the official announcement.

The 2009 Australian Junior Elite Cruiser Champion and current Australian #3 Junior Elite rider, Kyle Horton, has officially joined the bmxultra.com team.

Kyle is on the Victorian State squad training under Tony Harvey and was originally riding as the pro for the One Bicycles Australia team, and did extremely well for them. Beside the team name, not a lot has changed for him, he'll still be riding One Bicycles but with custom coloured One Bicycles/bmxultra.com jerseys.

Kyle made his debut for the bmxultra.com team with his new jersey at a race meeting at Wodonga on the weekend at the Border Bonanza.

Fighting his way through mud and two gates of pro riders Kyle made the podium, finishing in a respectable third place.

Kyle will be flying his bmxultra.com jersey at his home track in Bendigo for the Bendigo Gold Rush on August the 15th.

During the 2010 UCI BMX World championships in Pietermaritzburg Latvian Maris Strombergs and Briton Shanaze Reade reclaimed the UCI BMX World Championship men’s and women’s titles respectively on Saturday 31 July 2010. Next to that the hero for the partisan South African crowd was men’s runner up Sifiso Nhlapo.

03/08 ONE/Kenda UCI World Championship South Africa

Christensen WORLD CHAMPION, Byndloss World no. 3 and Hladikova World no. 5
The UCI World Championship is just behind us, and what an event it was.
Although ONE/Kenda's Chris Christensen from Denmark didn't have the best start, he did a fantastic 3rd straight which made it possible for him to sprint to the World Title in 14 yo Boys.

Just like last year his sister Simone took 4th place in 16yo. girls.

Last years World Champion Maliek Byndloss from the USA has been fast all year, but in the main of 15 yo Boys he came in contact with the French European Champion on the first straight. Maliek took 5th. In cruiser class Maliek took a podium with 3rd place.

In Elite Women ONE/Kenda's Aneta Hladikova from Czech Republic once again showed she's having a great season. In the main she messed up her first straight, but came back to a superb 5th place. In cruiser class Aneta wanted more but a 5th spot was the final result.

Congrats to our riders for doing so well and thanks to our sponsors for making it all happen.

02/08 Levi Collins' one, two punch

bmxultra.com's Levi Collins won the 25-29 mens 20" class at the 2010 UCI World Championships in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa on Friday. To prove it was no fluke he has followed it up with a second place in the 25-29 mens cruiser class yesterday.

02/08 Strombergs and Reade reclaim their BMX world titles

Pietermaritzburg – It was a case of call back the past when Latvian Maris Strombergs and Briton Shanaze Reade reclaimed the UCI BMX World Championship men’s and women’s titles respectively in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday – but the hero for the partisan South African crowd was men’s runner up Sifiso Nhlapo.

Strombergs was without doubt the deserved winner and he was never headed in a frenetic day of racing that saw a sprinkling of thrills and spills on the purpose-built track at the Royal Showgrounds.

For the local crowd the men’s final result was a bitter sweet conclusion to the day’s racing. For Sifiso Nhlapo it was simply another step on his tough journey to glory. After finishing third in the 2008 World Championships, Skizo as he is known was forced to watch the 2009 World Champs after he broke his neck in a horrific training crash. So to end second is a step forward and victory in 2011 would simply be the continuation of a progression.

Frenchman Joris Daudet claimed the bronze medal in the men’s event after pre-event favourite Sam Willoughby went down in a big crash on the first turn.

In the women’s final, talented Reade added more World Championship gold to her trophy cabinet that already includes medals from two BMX World Championships and the 2007 and 2008 World Track Championships.

Reade regained the world title when she outrode the opposition from the start ramp by taking the holeshot, although she was given a bit of help when her biggest challenger, Frenchwomen Laëtitia Le Corguillé unclipped and was left off the pace from the start.

New Zealand’s Sarah Walker claimed the silver and American Alise Post the bronze medal but neither ever came close to the fast-starting Reade.

In the junior women’s final, Netherland’s Merle van Benthem grabbed the holeshot from the start and beat off the challenge of American Brooke Crain and Australian Melinda McLeod.

The junior men’s race was loaded with drama as US favourite Connor Fields went to the front as expected and looked to be on his way to an easy win, but he took the rhythm section too fast and crashed heavily, allowing Frenchman Sylvain Andre to grab the win from Kristers Lejins (Latvia) and Twan van Gendt (Netherlands).
