Review: Supercross Racerhead FL Stem

We have checked out the Supercross Racerhead Top Loading stems in the past and when Supercross released their Racerhead Front Loader we just had to take a close look at that too.

Supercross Racerhead Front Loader stemSupercross had been developing their Top Loader stems over a long period of time, reducing weight where they could to push towards "the weight savings potential of a front loader". When it seemed like they had just about perfected the Top Loading stem they released their own Front Loader. Front Loader stems are considered more of an all rounder, it's not just for racing, but for all aspects of BMX.

Supercross have moved away from the single bolt cam style fork clamp that they used in their Top Loading stems, opting for the more traditional dual pinch bolts. So you can rest easy knowing you have a proven system keeping your bars attached to your fork.

Weighing in at 8.8 oz (250grams), for the 48mm version, it's very light compared to the front loader benchmark stem the S&M Redneck XLT (53mm) at 11.3 oz or S&M Lil Redneck (49mm) at 9.9oz. The first reaction to the weight of the stem is a predictable "Wow!" amongst more seasoned BMXers, then it's also quite stunning to look at, especially in the vivid Purple Anodized, Red Anodized, Teal Anodized and Blue Anodized, but it also comes in Black Anodized and limited edition colours.

Supercross Racerhead Front Loader stemTop loader stems generally come in more sizes than front loaders, there seems to be a standard of 48mm and 53mm lengths when it comes to front loading stems, so if you are after a stem that's longer than 53mm you will probably have to look elsewhere. I run a long XXL frame, and until recently I was using long stems too, but started experimenting a little with top loader stems, not only could I get my handlebars lower, if I choose to, I could also tighten up the steering a bit. And if I found my bars were too low the stem could be flipped to get a little more rise. I dropped 12mm in stem length when I went to the front loader but the ride felt a whole lot better. Steering was more responsive, gates felt better, it was easier to throw the bike around through jumps and corners. Best of all I found the front loader extremely stiff at all times, and without trying I managed to shave some weight from my ride.

There are two sizes available, including:
