30/11 BMXPros.com Race Report: ABA Grand Nationals Tulsa, Oklahoma
Stumpy wins the ABA #1 Pro Cruiser Title
This weekend, the BMXPros.com riders came to the ABA Grands to end the season of BMX racing off on a high note, and all of the guys did just that with a great weekend of racing in Tulsa. The Grands is always the biggest ABA National of the year, and with 500 motos, riders from all over the world, and the best AA Pros in BMX today, it would be one of the hardest events to make the main event at. The track was plagued with wet dirt due to bad weather in the Tulsa area for the past few weeks, but the ABA did their best to make the track race ready for the Pro and amateur riders to go after one of the most prestigious titles in BMX racing, ABA #1. Here is how the BMXPros.com riders finished up in the main events.

Randy Stumpfhauser rules the Pro Cruiser Class in BMX racing. For the last 3 years Randy has won the Pro Cruiser title in Both ABA and NBL. as well as the UCI World Championships. Entering into the ABA Grands, Randy was going for 4 Pro titles in a row, a feat that has never been done in the Class. Randy was also had a chance to win the AA Pro #1 plate, but failing to make it out of the motos ended his run for the 2nd ABA title of 2004. Randy looks to add a ABA #1 AA Pro title to his long list of Pro titles in 2005! Randy's sponsors include GT Bicycles, Hyundai, ODI, IRC Tires, Shimano, Fox Racing, Smith, Sun Ringle, Bombshell Forks, AC, Thomson, Powerbar, CTI Knee Braces, Tool Shed, Marwi, SDG, FSA Headsets, S & M, Cyto Sport, and BMXpros.com

Christophe Leveque has had a rough past 2 seasons. After getting over major back surgery, Christophe came back last summer and returned for BMX racing for 3 months with some impressive results. Then last October, after badly breaking his foot, he once again had to sit out almost 13 months with another injury. Well the injuries are gone and the results are going to start being tabulated once again, as Christophe is back. Back in a big way too, as he was in the AA Pro main at the Grands. Caulk him up with a 7th overall, but more importantly, a clean bill of health and his return to the AA Pro Class. Welcome Back! Christophe's sponsors include GT Bicycles, Hyundai, ODI, IRC Tires, Shimano, Fox Racing, Tangent, SDG, Smith, Sun Ringle, Thomson, Marwi, FSA Headsets, S & M, Cyto Sport, and BMXpros.com

Kyle Bennett also had a chance of winning the ABA #1 Pro title, but it would lie in the hands of a few other riders and how they would finish up for the day. Once the dust settled after the AA Pro main, Kyle wound up 6th place for the day and just 2 sports shy of ABA National #1. Kyle caps off another great season, to add a #3 Pro plate with his NBL #1 title. Kyle's sponsors include Free Agent, KHS, Answer, Sun Ringle, UGP, Truvativ, Velo, Vans, S&M bars, ATI, Shimano, Profile, Powerbar, Smith, Cyto Sport, and BMXpros.com.

Cristian Becerine rode so strong at the ABA Grands, but by his result of a 5th in Pro Open didn't do the way he rode justice. Cristian would have been in the AA Pro main as well, but his chain coming off in the last turn in the semi kept him out of the toughest main event the ABA has to offer. Cristian was looking to keep his Pro Open win streak going, but it just didn't happen. Either way, once again, he showed just how good of a rider he is. Cristian's sponsors include Crupi, O'Neal, Answer, UGP, ODI, Sun Ringle, Marwi, Shimano, Tool Shed, Powerbar, BMXpros.com, Cyto Sport, and Thomson Seat Posts.

30/11 VET PRO? (Letter from reader)
I write as a concerned “older rider” with what I am hearing at the track on the credibility of the “Vet Pro” class in Australia .
A lot of the negativity is coming from a few of the industry’s greats, with regard to the fact that the people that want to make Vet Pro a valid class at national level are not worthy of the title “Vet Pro”. I can’t understand the negativity with this concept as it is a logical step from AA. I’ll explain.
A rider will start in this sport at a young age and make their way up through the age groups until about 15 or 16, when they make the decision to go to A Pro. Depending on their speed they will spend a few years in “A”, and then they will progress into “AA” where they will spend most of their competitive career. Around about the late twenties some of these riders will find themselves struggling to stay competitive. They then progress to” Vet Pro” where they are racing against similar aged riders instead of teens and early twenty something’s.
Vet Pro, as I understand it, is aimed at the fast and competitive over 30’s, not to disrespect the 30+ riders who race more for fun and enjoyment, which is great as these guys are the backbone of the sport. The more competitive riders would also allow these guys to have their own battles and races together.
Back to the “not worthy” stuff, a lot of these riders are currently racing “A” or even “AA” which, in my opinion, is better than the talkers out there. These guys are already banging bars with the Pro’s, not bad for some old duffers eh!
Out in the world of business and finance companies will not sponsor ‘Bruiser Cruiser’, [what does this mean to any one outside the sport of BMX?]. Where as “Vet Pro” is universal in any language and more viable as a sponsorship option.
In closing, these guys hurling the negativity around should not be bad mouthing the sport - either put up or shut up! I would like to see all the older fast guys getting back on a bike and mixing it with the "not worthy’s”. This would be good for the 30+ riders, good for the sport, and good for the spectators. “Vet Pro” will work if given a chance. If it’s good enough for the USA, why not AUS?

Yours in BMX,
Trevor Stamford, Victoria

27/11 Supercross' Dynamic Duo
Supercross is looking to throw a wrench into Redlines planned Trifecta at the ABA Grands!

Santa Clarita, CA - While it has looked all year like Redlines Pro's were going to assure them a perfect trifecta at the grands, no one has been paying attention to the little garage BMX company Supercross, who at this moment only hours before the ABA Grands is starting is in the position to steal two of Redline's spots away. While Supercross is conceding that Redlines top AA Pro Bubba Harris not only is going to take the ABA #1 Pro title, we here at Supercross think he deserves it and are cheering Bubs on to make sure that he does grab that top honor, but in the other 2 classes, it is a different story, in the Girl Pro Class Supercross' Samantha Cools is only 71 points or 1 finish place at the grands behind Redlines Kim Hiyashi, and with the training Samantha has been doing with Bubs and Big Rig while staying in Sunny So Cal for the last month we think she is a sure in for the title, and in the Vet Pro Supercross' Big Bad TP Todd Parry is within striking distance to steal the title away from Carne$, TP is wanting this title bad and has been on a mission to take his Supercross to the top of the podium this weekend and try to finish far enough ahead of Carne$ and Mitchell to take the title home. All in all it will be great racing and a good time for all!! For more information of Supercross riders or Supercross products please visit http://www.supercrossbmx.com

26/11 Hyper Bicycles announces new ABA factory team manager
Carlsbad, California - Hyper Bicycles has announced that it has named TJ Johnson as its ABA Factory Team Manager. Johnson joins Anthony DeRosa, NBL Factory Team manager, in the charge for dual team titles in 2005. A long time BMX'er and former AA Pro, Johnson was the team manager and general manager for Staats Bicycles before moving on to Tangent Products in 2003. With many years of design experience under his belt, Johnson was also integral in the design of Hyper's 2005 frame line up, due out in January. "I've been out of the team manager spotlight for a while now and I'm excited to get back in," stated Johnson. "I want to help build Hyper into the number one team and number one bike. With all the great people involved, I know it will happen." Look for the NBL National Championship team at Morristown over Thanksgiving weekend and check out TJ's managerial debut at the ABA Silver Dollar Nationals in Reno in January.

Look out for Hyper's all new website coming soon!

26/11 BMXVictoria 2005 race schedule released
The BMXVictoria 2005 race schedule has nothing new or exciting in it. One thing that really stands out is that there is only 1 race meeting in Victoria for all of March, out of the 3 weekends that lead up to the Australian Championships. Riders that can't afford to go to Canberra for the ACT Titles will have to rely on their clubs to get some racing in.
In 2004, just as any other year, there have been a number of poorly supported events like Shepparton, Warrnambool and Frankston. Those clubs fall victim to the fact that there are so many large meetings on all in a row and a lot of money going out for entries, especially the Victorian Championships, leaving riders to have to pick and choose which meetings they can afford. I think that it's an oversight that BMXVictoria doesn't show more support for these events since they rely on the race levies for income. How difficult would it be to set up a series for these clubs, call it the "Road to Portland Super Series". I'm not talking about giving out medals that get mounted to a plaque, that would just not work. Each of the events will be stand alone events, it would be a series where they will provide an end goal, it just might make racing that little more exciting. You could appeal to the riders egos and come up with a slogan like "are you the most consistant rider in your class?". Not exactly catchy, needs a bit of work, but you get the point. I know that will do the trick for some of the older riders, and I'm sure some of the younger riders too, giving them bragging rights as they get closer to the State Championships. If the clubs band together they might be able to also save money by putting out one entry form which advertises all 3 races, heck there's no problem add extra events and making it run over a longer period. When you think about it, it also helps to promote the State titles in Portland, generating some excitement, which has been lacking for the seasoned riders. It appears that most riders this year are just going through the motions, entering because it's the last event in Victoria for a month and a half, or just because they have every other year.
Maybe there should be some investigation into a team trophy challenge that runs right throughout the year. I could drum up a team cup/trophy. Now we just need the support from the clubs. It makes plain sense to me, why just appeal for one rider when you reach out to a whole crew to each race meeting.

25/11 Vet Pro. We ask the pros (part 1)
The Vet Pro class is still developing in Australia, while it has been running in the US for some time now. There are mixed opinions of the Vet Pro class here in Australia, most people finding is exciting close racing, and entertaining to watch. There are a handful of people who say it's taking money from the AA Pros, others saying that you must have raced Pro to race Vet Pro. While many of them don't realise that over half the Aussie Vet Pro field have raced at a pro level at some stage throughout their careers, some still compete in the A pro ranks, the other riders have dropped back into the amateur ranks as there wasn't a Vet Pro class for them and they didn't feel competitive enough to race A Pro. There is also some confusion between Vet Pro and the novelty class called "Bruiser Cruiser" which is set up as a class for riders over 30 and more specifically "no pros". As things tend to develop I wouldn't be surprised if you see the ams dropping back to "Bruiser Cruiser" and the Vet Pro riders sticking with Vet Pro on their 20 inch bikes as the field grows with an increasing number of former pros.

It would be nice to see some of the former stars of BMX come back into the sport and compete in the Vet Pro class. It would be awesome to see names like Rawson, Hales, Waye, Patch, Addams, Dixon, Hawkins, Stephens, the list could go on and on. I wonder what it would take to convince some of the guys that are eligible to compete but instead sit on the side lines and watch week in week out. It would be great to see Craig Sainsbury put his money where his mouth is and step in front of the camera to show his fellow Aussie Vet Pro riders how he finished fourth in Vet Pro at the ABA World championships this year. Dean Patch was heard saying that if there was a 20 inch Vet Pro class he would consider returning to racing, well the class has been running for some time now and the prize pools aren't too bad either, but he still hasn't been seen racing yet. ECI's Julian Millis still has plenty of bike skills and a killer snap on the gate, but it takes something like the National Championships to get him excited enough to enter to race.

We thought we'd try to find out what the American pros had to say about the Vet Pro class.
SE Racing's Todd Lyons (www.toddlyons.com) is a former amateur world champion and AA pro, he now competes in both A Pro and Vet Pro classes.
BMXUltra.com: How do you see Vet Pro developing as a class?
Todd Lyons: It's a full on legit class here. It might not be too hard to make the main for me, but top-three sure is hard. The class is going to get quite a bit bigger in '05 with some new guys coming in. It's well established in the ABA, but coming on slowly (in only their first year) in the NBL.

BMXUltra.com: What does Vet Pro mean to you?
Todd Lyons: It means I don't have to race AA Pro and get my ass kicked! It's a fun class with some good comp. I'm 33, but I'm still competitive in A-Pro. This past year I actually raced A-Pro in the NBL and Vet Pro in ABA.

BMXUltra.com: Do you think there is any room for non-pro riders competing in a Vet Pro class just because they are old enough?
Todd Lyons:
Yeah, for sure. There's a guy named Todd Parry racing Vet Pro over here who's one of the top 5 guys, and he never raced pro before. He came straight in from amateur. It is kind of silly that the class is called "Vet Pro" and some of the guys were never pros before, but it adds to the competition and the class.

BMXUltra.com: Do the other pro classes bitch and moan that Vet Pro are taking their money?
Todd Lyons: No, that's never really been a subject. Maybe A-Pro when their 1st place is as much as 3rd in AA Pro, but for the most part, no. If they did away with the Vet Pro class, the sanctions wouldn't add to the AA pro class.

BMXUltra.com: Do you prefer to race Vet Pro or A Pro?
Todd Lyons: If I've been on my training program, then I'm highly competitive in A-Pro. But when I've been busy with SE stuff and I haven't been training, then I'd rather race Vet Pro. I can just hop on my bike and be comfortable in Vet Pro, but you need to be pretty serious to be competitive in A-Pro.

FreeAgent's Dale Holmes, (www.daleholmes.com) AA Pro and 2 times elite World Champion, is known to speak his mind, since he's over 30 we thought he'd have a few ideas about the Vet Pro class.

BMXUltra.com: What do you think of the Vet Pro class?
Dale Holmes: It's a great idea to bring out older Pros that have not been out racing in a few years and a chance for the new people involved in BMX see some old school legends. Over here them guys have semi's at a big race which is cool.

BMXUltra.com: How would you define Vet Pro?
Dale Holmes: Someone who has been a Pro before at one point in his career and also someone that has won something as well, but if they haven't, as long as they were legit Pros they can have it. Not a older amateur that wants to try fit into a easer class.

BMXUltra.com: So you don't think non-pro riders have a place in a Vet Pro class, even if they are old enough?
Dale Holmes:
No if you were never a Pro for sure you should not be allowed in.

BMXUltra.com: So you think Todd Parry has no place in Vet Pro?
Dale Holmes: Yes Todd is fast and a cool guy not to mention big arms! I really don't know his background but he fits in the class good.

BMXUltra.com: Would you rather see Stu Thompson in Vet pro than in Am?
Dale Holmes: He tried it a few years ago, I remember, and it was a bit too hard for him I think. Maybe they should have Super Vet, 40 plus for the Leary's, Hill's and real legends. Now that would be super cool.

BMXUltra.com: Do think that Vet Pro will take some of the AA prize money?
Dale Holmes: It should'nt, its a good way to get some older Pros back in the Sport, they should get not as much money as the Elite or AA class but for sure money should be a factor in there, but then again it should not be taken from the AAs or Elite prize pool, they would have to genarate ther own money some other way. Sell their old school frames on E-Bay or something! Elite is the best which means should be paid the most.

BMXUltra.com: Do you think that you will ride Vet Pro when you are finished with the AA ranks?
Dale Holmes: Good question. I ask myself that alot. I would like to think Ii could, but not just yet. I mean in motocross, McGrath, Ryan Hughes and some of them guys compete in Vet Motocross races so why not. I feel the age limit should be a little older than 30 now though. Look how many over 30s can still win in both BMX in Mountainbikes. The World Champion 4x rider is Eric Carter is 34 years old, Mike King 35, Brian Lopes myself 33, Steve Veltman 35, Christophe and Purse are 32 Allier is around 30. I think to be Vet now it should be (at least here in the States) 34 years old, Harry Leary and Eric Rupe still kick ass in their 40s. Vet Pro over here in the States is getting more competitive, with Carnes, and now now Darrin Mitchell. Right now I would not, but never say never!

Look out for more mini interviews about Vet Pro over the next week or so.

24/11 Why do you race BMX?
We are all individuals, and we all have our own reasons for racing BMX. It might be that it's a cheap sport, it might be that you like jumping, or bumping elbows with 7 other people, it could even be for the social side of things.
We are interested to find out what it is that drives our readers. So email webmaster@bmxultra.com and tell us where you are from, and why you race BMX.

23/11 Victorian State titles this weekend
The Victorian State titles is nothing in comparison to the ABA grands this weekend, but we can't all make it out to Sand Springs, Oklahoma.
BMX Victoria would like to have you think that there are no problems with our sport, but when you have a look at the entries for the state championships, there's something going on with the elite in the state. Only 7 senior elite men riders, not even enough for Women (even combining junior and senior), the junior elites have just enough for a final and a few cruiser riders. When you take a step back and have a look at the situation it's obvious the riders who normally ride in the pro classes have decided they get more bang for their buck racing at meetings like the Cash Dash and the Dome. You would be lucky to get the $77 entry fee back if you get first or second in the senior elite class.
It's not all about the pros but there would normally be some good close racing. Tony Harvey and Jonathan Hoare will go head to head in 6 motos, and there will be a couple of dark horses in the field including Ben Price, Levi Collins (who is still looking for form) and A Pros Jamie Truran and Simon Grigg.
In the AM classes there is a distinct lack of entries for riders between the ages of 16 and 30, these are the guys who have to pay their own entries and either couldn't afford it or decided the State titles just aren't worth it. I think this says something...now let's see...hmmm...maybe the entry fees are too high?
It's obvious that if we keep going this way the sport will continue to dwindle away. We need to look at ways to cut costs and pass the savings on to the riders.

While we are talking about change how about these to generate some additional entries and excitement:

I have that off my chest now. Remember if you are unhappy with the Victorian championships and you are racing, or even spectating, this weekend wear a black arm band to let others know you believe that the sport will die in Victoria if someone doesn't make a change and make it soon.

22/11 Brian Kirkham seriously injured
News just in last night from South Australia's Brett MaliC.
Brian Kirkham (Team O'Neil) UCI Jnr Elite #7 World had a bad fall on Saturday at the Tea Tree Gully BMX track, where the South Australian state championships were held early last month. He over cleared the first straight doubles and flatlanded them, resulting in 2 broken wrists and 2 broken forearms. He was also suspected of a broken pelvis, but thankfully after X-rays it was found that he had severe bruising.
He has had on operation on his right arm and wrist where pins have been inserted. He will also have a second operation later this week for the same procedure. When we saw him today he was pumping up the morphine due to the severe pain. Brian will be out for 12-16 weeks and then rehab, maybe back racing in Feb next year.
BMXUltra.com and it's readers all wish Brian a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back on his bike.

It's a pro 24 with a 21.5 Top tube, comes with Dirt Designs padset.

17/11 Knox Dome report
The Knox Club dropped the word Thunder from the name of their event (formerly The Thunder Dome) in an attempt to shake the storms that the event is well known for. It didn't work, Melbourne's Spring weather lived up to it's reputation and the rain fell over the Knox track for most of the week leading up to the event.
It was surprising that the track held up as well as it did, given the amount of rain, it was a little soft but as racing progressed on the first day it started to firm up. More rain over night however turned it quite slippery and boggy for Sundays racing.
The Knox dome was the richest event in Victoria and promissed to be the largest, which managed to attract a number of high class riders from across Australia. The AA Pro turnout wasn't as impressive as it had been in the past, the bigger named riders were there, like Madill, Fenwick, Young, but the others were kept away by injuries and various other reasons.
In the main, Madill seemed to hit the gate Fenwick lead the way with Khalen Young and Jonathan "Jon Jon" Hoare in chase. Harvey pushed his way past Jon Jon, but he fought back and pulled up next to Harvey by the doubles into the second corner only to have Harvey jump across the double and cut the corner tight. Jon Jon was lucky to hold on to his bike, the mix up allowed Madill to slip into fourth. Fenwick was too far in front for anyone to catch, but Harvey had Young in his sights and just nearly pulled him at the line. Young finished second with Harvey third and Madill fourth.
A pro had it tough, 24 riders, just 1 short of semis, and it was a tight field. Nearly any combination of the riders could have made up the main. Jamie Truran was the dark horse for the final. He was the only A Pro jumping the big doubles all weekend in racing, in the main he got off to a slow start but was flying when he hit the doubles, but he landed short, way short and washed off all his speed. Shaun Craven would have been amongst them in the final, but he was injured in a previous final and didn't show on the gate. Daniel Stocks was unbeatable, even in the final. Adam Robb looked like he would take second in the final after only making it through in a run off. Her ran out of gas in the last half of the track being past by the fast finishing Simon Grigg, then Geoff Tripovich and Matthew Willoughby. It was Tripovich who had the momentum though, he slipped into second, then Grigg, Willoughby and Robb.
Pro women saw 7 riders, they would have to race all 6 races like a final. Ziggy Callan and Emma Franklin had some very close battles, sharing the wins between them for the first 5 motos. Emma would have to win the last one to win overall. Ziggy got the snap though and left Emma chasing, she made up the ground coming out of the first corner but clipped Ziggy's back wheel and went over the bars and hit the ground heavily. Although carted off the track with a neck brace and taken to hospital Emma got out of it with some heavy bruising.
The Vet Pro classes were entertaining to say the least, Glenn Suridge took out the win in cruiser, but he didn't get it all his own way swapping lead a couple of times with Jamie Bullows. Jamie Bullows took out the win in 20 inch. South Australian Brett MaliC looked like he was in with a chance sitting in a comfortable second in the first corner but then he got hooked up with Craig Walczuk and they both went down. Dean Coles slipped into second.
One of the highlights for the event was seeing the amazing support from the pro riders for the Teen age Cancer fund called CanTeen. Many of the pro riders bought a bandanna to help support the fund. South Australia's Brett MaliC raised a fair bit of money from the riders and spectators over the weekend. Check out the photo for faces like Madill and Fenwick as well as a lot of new faces.

17/11 Staats press release
Queenslander joins team... It is with great pleasure that Sirius Sports announce the signing of Dirk Winter, current World # 2 (14 Boys) to the Staats team. I met with Dirk at the recent North Island Titles in Rotorua & was suitably impressed with Dirk's ability on the bike & equally impressed with his demeanour off of it. Dirk has a bright future in BMX & is a welcomed addition to the Staats team. Dirk figures heavily in the promotion of the brand in this region & he will be an integral part of Staats’ future success downunder. In addition to his 20” title, Dirk is also World # 4 on his Cruiser & will be mixing it with the big boys in the A Pro class. Dirk joins Western Australia’s Nikki Harper (Junior Women) as the 2nd rider signed to Team Staats Downunder in as many months.

16/11 Sprocket rule changes
There's nothing like a rule change to get people upset. Australia's sprocket program, for riders under 8 year old, moved the emphasis from winning to participation and having fun. It was met with mixed reactions when it was introduced. There's a new rule change, and I expect there are a lot more to come as we approach the Olympics as the sport's bodies put their hands out for more government funding. Here's a readers letter about the new Sprocket rule.

"I am extremely p&$%#d off that my sprocket boy who has been racing for 4 years, is suddenly not allowed to race in the 8 boys age class until he turns 8 which is October! He's been looking forward anxiously to be recognised as a place getter not a competitor. This is going to break his little heart! This is pathetic. He will maybe get one race in before the Victorian Titles with the other 8 boys.
I am appalled that this rule has been approved. He will also never be eligible to race in the Australian Titles as an 8 year old making him now miss out on a National titles chance. Will someone please explain?"

15/11 Knox results
Knox was run a week ago, but with the website down we were unable to give you a run down of what happened.
AA Pro was won by Mike Fenwick, A Pro was won by Daniel Stocks, Pro women was won by Ziggy Callan it was going to be close with Emma Franklin, but Emma crashed heavily in the last race, and with not enough riders for a final it was by point overall. A few people have asked how Emma is, she's ok. She was taken from the track with suspected arm and neck injuries, but after xrays and ct scans they found that she was lucky and it's only a lot of bruising. We still have a report, videos and photos to come, but for now click here to check out the results.

15/11 BMXVictoria State titles entry list
We have a list of the Victorian State Titles entries, it's a little out of date (around 6 days), but if you want to make sure that your entry was received check out the list on the race calendar.
While on the subject of the Victorian State titles. If you are unhappy with the way the titles are run, and we all know everyone is unhappy with the entry fees, show that you are not happy, wear a black arm band at the titles to show that you want to see the sport change in Victoria before it dies. By black arm band black insulation tape will do the trick, just don't do it too tight or you won't get your jersey off.

13/11 BMXUltra.com retro week
We have spent the last week focusing on retro BMXUltra.com. If you checked in over the past week you would have seen what BMXUltra.com looked like 10 years ago (nothing - we started 8 years ago) or what it looked like about 18 months ago. Actually, come to think of it, it was Burnout 3 on the PS2 that was the focus.
Over the last week we had more issues with internet providers than we'd like to get in to. Anyways the site is back on air and we have a guarantee of 99.9% up time so we'd like to pass that back to you.
There are still a bunch of things to sort out, including the top 100, classifieds, and getting a forum up and running. We will have to extend the disk space again though, we have cut the size of the site in half, which you probably won't notice, because we just chopped out a bunch of old images and video but it's still too big.
The back log of news from the past week will be up soon, including photos and video from Knox.
Thanks to all that called and emailed while we were "on holidays". Oh, if you come across any broken links let us know...and don't forget to tell us where and on which page.

Have you picked up your 2005 GavinD BMX Calendar yet? What's that? You didn't realise they had been released yet? They sure have.
Gavin D is one of Australia's premier freelance BMX photographers. His 2004 Calendar was an awesome concept and the 2005 calendar is even better. It includes photos and event information for all over Australia and New Zealand.

05/11 “Track Attack” BMX race series, January 2005
The Victorian Eastern Region BMX association and GT Bicycles Australia are proud to announce that the 2005 Track Attack series will be known as the “GT Bicycles Australia Track Attack”.

The Track Attack series has been developing a reputation as a premier event for some years now, and the agreement for 2005 follows GT’s involvement in the 2004 series.

“To have the vote of confidence of the leading bicycle brand in BMX and to associate the solidarity of the GT brand name with our race series is a huge boost to the organising committee and the Eastern Region clubs” says Brian Lacey, president of the region.

The series will be run from Saturday January 15th to Sunday 23rd at the six metropolitan Melbourne Eastern Region BMX tracks - Park Orchards, Frankston, Knox, Eastfield, Lilydale and South Eastern.

The 2005 series will introduce an additional class of racing – Vet Pro 20”, a prize-money class for over 30 year old riders. This follows the series highlight class of 2004, in which the “Bruiser Cruiser” class for over 30’s was one of the most hotly contested classes.

Series and general BMX racing queries may be directed to Brian Lacey email laceyfamily@ozemail.com.au or phone 03 9563 8552.

Entry forms are available from our racing calendar.

05/11 More on entry fees
It seems that the entry fee problem effects people right across the country, check these email that we received over night.
Tony Hancock - Western Australia
It seems like the entry fee debate is hotting up. To make life even more up in arms, just thought I would like to throw comments to the wind. Several of us over here in WA are seriously looking at coming to the Track Attack series. However, organisers also need to take heed of this situation as we all want to show support for such events and unlike others, spend much more than what it is worth to go to these events and support them. To give an idea of projected costs, it is going to be in excess of $2000 plus[ transport and accommodation, food etc]. And we haven't even discussed entry fees yet. For me, the Vet class is that opportunity to race others of equal opportunity and skills with a little sweetner at the end if u make the final. The prize money is more or less a token gesture, because seriously.....no one in their right mind would travel from the opposite side of Oz to race for a pitence prize money where the entry fee is the same as the pros?
The simple answer to entry fees is simple. If it was a trophy event, more than what is offered to buy the trophies is given for a normal $10 entry fee. On average, we know the price would be approx $200. So why not simply maintain a normal entry fee based on a prize pool of $200. Not much but something? These are not the answers and are not intended to be...just opinions.
Thanx for the time
P.S.
I really do want to come to an event where I can simply just ride my bike.

Brett MaliC - South Australia
Couple of things....to get of my chest.
What's up with HELL TRACK entry charging $25 for bruiser cruiser for $200, $5 payback, and 14+ same entry for $1350, $10 payback Yeah, I'm complaining. Look if it was the other way round I would still complain. If you charge the same entry fee as the other class then the prize or money should come close to the other. In doing so you force riders to ride age. So why offer the class at all and complain when no riders enter. I ask the Hell Track organisers to tell me why you are charging so much for the class, are you wanting to make a profit from riders or are you trying to prop up the other classes with money made??. If the answer is yes to those 2 questions I will be glad to explain this is unacceptable and wrong. This is just and example of why riders like to race.
The SA STATE TITLES CHARGED $35 entry for VET PRO CRUISER.......they offered $800 plus $25 payback, so it brought the total pool to above $1000 and they gave out prizes for the consolation final and the last rider that didn't make the conso final got T-Shirts and free movie tickets. And I assure you that next year the riders will be back because they enjoyed it.
Moral of the story;
It's not what they can give you, it's what you can give them. Make it affordable, enjoyable and fun. But most of all make it happen.

Now for the A and AA PRO riders,
Get out of your tent, car or chair when you have a break and take a walk around the track, have a chat and introduce yourself to the younger riders, swallow your embarrassment or pride, because these kids lookup to you. How about spotting a couple of younger riders racing on your brand and catchup after the race and chat about how they went, give em some tips..........gee's that might take 5 min. I will never forget the day at Canberra in 1980 (something) and the legendary GT rider Greg Hill walked up to a group of us young wanna be riders, sat my brothers bike and talked to us about how we were racing, who our favourite Pro's were and even gave some tips. I pested my dad to buy a GT and every time I got on the track I wanted to be like Greggy. (except he didn't fall off ever time)
You are at the top end of the sport, how about making a young riders day, who knows in a few years time they might be where you are today. Your sponsor may even be impressed.

Ah that's better.

04/11 2004 BMXUltra.com unofficial Vet Pro series
The points have been updated and we have set up a dedicated page for the 2004 series.
Click here to find out more about our pilot series that looks like it could be big in 2005, we've been talking to a brewery about series end prizes.

04/11 CanTeen Bandannas at Knox
On the recent success of National Bandanna Day last Friday. Brett MaliC will once again be chasing, cornering and mugging riders and parents to purchase a bright, hip and cool Bandanna at Knox this weekend: they're loads of fun and easy to wear and are only $3.
Bandanna day is CanTeens annual fundraiser and awareness day and as CanTeen isn't an organisation funded by the government, they rely purely on the support of the private sector and the general community (that's you).
CanTeen provides recreational and educational programs for young people living with cancer. At the core of CanTeens programs is the belief that the best person to support someone living with cancer is another young person in the same situation or has been affected by cancer in some way.
Canteen provides opportunities for their members to get together, have fun, support each other and take some time out from the stresses of family and hospital life.

So get like the Pro's n support kids with cancer and grab a hip 'n' cool Bandanna off Brett at Knox this weekend or he will eventually chase you down. Check out their website and make a donation.

04/11 Staats race report - Who Left the Water On?!
ABA Fall Nationals – Del Mar, CA
One of the most anticipated nationals of the year, the ABA Fall Nationals in Del Mar, California is the last chance to lock in a few good scores with some of the highest rider counts of the season before spending turkey-time in Tulsa, OK for the Grand National. The Del Mar Fairgrounds is an excellent facility with a spacious arena for a challenging track, grandstands, pit row, vendor’s area, amusement park, close to the beach what more could you ask for? How about having the beach ON the track?! Well, not exactly, but on the Wednesday before the race San Diego was hit by one of its heaviest rain storms in 100 years. Nearly a years worth of rain came down in 24 hours!!! The ABA crew pulled up their hip-waders and still managed to get the track rideable for the weekend. It may have not been the usual blue-grooved speed way with all the muddy-land-mines but it made for some exciting racing. A BIG THANK YOU goes out to the ABA gang for all their hard work.
Staats’ AA Mike Day has stepped up the training regimen and it was showing by pulling the first straight with all the Clydesdales. When needed, “Day-Day’s” magician-like bike skills were used to pass at will. It also helps to have your own personal cheering section chanting your name. The result – 1st in Pro Open and 2nd in Class.
Afro Bob de Wilde came to Del Mar still jet-lagged from his P.R. trip to New Zealand. Still a little groggy, he decided to hop on one of the new prototype Staats aluminum frames to gets some R&D time in. Robert adjusted quickly to the new geometry and was hole-shotting motos and pulling incredible moves in the turns. Even with the jet lag and just hopping on a new frame, Big Bob reeled in a 2nd in Pro Open on Saturday!
The skeleton crew of Staats amateurs in Del Mar was Masahiro Sampei, Joey Backus, Steve Spencer and the return of the “Grand Master” Jason Halverson.
Masa has been spending a lot of time in the U.S. this year proving himself as a contender in the 14 expert and cruiser classes. For the Fall National, he brought over his whole family and a contingent of Japanese riders ready to strut their stuff. Masa led the Nippon crew by picking up a 3rd in cruiser and 4th in class on Saturday.
Joey Backus was looking to get back in the mix after being sidelined for part of the season. Joey was riding full-throttle and made the podium in the ultra-tough 17-20 cruiser class with a 3rd.
Most of the season, the 28-35 expert class was asking “Where is Halvy?” Hampered by an early season motorcycle injury and old age…he he he, the “Grand Master” (who also happens to be the owner of Staats) made his return to the national scene. Still attempting to find his gate start, he relied on his track speed to find the qualifying spots. In a last chance qualifier, he managed to pass N.A.G. #1 Drew Downey only to get edged out at the line. Look for Jason to be back to form by the Grands.
Staats’ token old-guy, Steve Spencer came in a week early to help with the track build. The long days, bad weather and the mud wrestling wore down Spence’ before the gate even dropped. He bucked up and still salvaged a 2nd in class and a 3rd in cruiser. Look for Spence-dizzle in the N.A.G. 5 Challenge and making a run at two N.A.G. #1 plates in Tulsa.
Noteworthy: Staats Administrative Assistant, Heather “Hottie-Patootie” Allred scored wins in the 21-25 Girls Cruiser class both days putting her in the hunt for her first ever N.A.G. #1 plate! Congratulations Heather! Go get ‘em!

04/11 Entry fee concerns
I hope to get the BMXUltra.com forum working in some form or another in the coming weeks so you folks can discuss these issues with total freedom of speech and hopefully come up with solutions to problems. Until that happens we'll continue to help riders air their thoughts and concerns.
Here's an email from Jamie Bullows.

I know you've had a few of these letters about entry fees already but this one I couldn't let go by.
I was just looking over the entry form for Frankston Helltrack and the entry fees are an absolute rip off for the pro vet classes.
How the hell can they think that they can charge the same entry fee as for 14+ open when the prize money isn't even a 1/10th of what the pros are getting?
How are they supposed to get the older riders interested in racing pro vet classes if they are just going to try and rip us off?
When they can pay $10 less entry fee and earn exactly the same prize money racing in age class on 20" and a little more on the cruiser why should we bother?
I know they lowered the entry fee down $5.00, well woopy doo for them. I don't think it's going to make bugger all difference in changing the minds of riders that they are blatantly ripping off. If I do decide to race I think I may only do age class as the money is the same.
Wake up to yourselves and try and help the sport instead of your lining your own pockets

03/11 Warrnambool Race report
It's not a great time of the year for the Warrnambool Classic, set amongst some of Victoria's biggest races including the Cash Dash, and Knox Dome, but also Victorian state titles entries are due in around the same time, and they aren't cheap. That didn't stop a large turn out though, entries were up 20% on last years event. Only a three hour drive west of Melbourne, Warrnambool is a great place to get away for the weekend, and they always put on some great racing. Maybe the club should consider running the race meeting during September and push the whole whale watching angle, I don't think many other clubs in the world could offer such attractions.
The track was in great condition, very fast and even a new double at the end of the first straight. The sun was out but there was a strong cross wind that seemed to die off as the meeting was about to finish.
Some of Victoria's best AA and A pro, and a couple of riders new to the pro field, went head to head for their share of the $1000 Pro Open prize pool. The 5 AA Pros in the field made it to the main but didn't have it all their way in the motos there were a couple of crashes. Tony Harvey was even seen trying to reach out for a little help from his friends as he was going down, unfortunatly it didn't help him.
The final would be a tight one, Young being the favourite, but you can never predict the results of a final that contains Harvey, local hero Luke Pretlove, Ben Price and Jonathan "Jon Jon" Hoare.
When the gate dropped you could have thrown a blanket over the front 4 riders, Young had a narrow lead over Harvey, Pretlove and Jon Jon who was on the inside. Jon Jon messed up the first jump, nose bonking the step up, he sucked it up but lost a little speed. When it came to the first corner Young had started to pull to a clear lead and Jon Jon was close behind followed by Pretlove and Harvey. Jon Jon made up ground in the third straight and pulled up right next to Young in the last corner but when the two collided he lost traction and fell, leaving Young the clear leader with Pretlove and Harvey drag racing for second. They looked to me to be too close to call, but the finish line judge gave it to Harvey. A pro Shaun Craven did a good job to finish fourth, just ahead of Ben Price.
Vet Pro had a full gate of riders after two had to withdraw due to injury and illness, so there were 4 races to decide the out come, no finals. In the first round Jenkins and Merritt battled for first and second with Weber in close for third. Karl Bryan was racing at his first race a little out classed, but pumped that he wasn't too far off the field. The second moto was similar to the first except it all went wrong for Merritt, he slid out on the second last corner driving his shoulder into the ground and breaking his collar bone. (The update is that he goes into hospital today to have it pinned. He will be out of racing for the rest of the year.) With Merritt in an ambulance on his way to the hospital and out of the mix Weber and Harris moved up to second and third.
Racing was over and done with in 3 hours, which must be a record for any Victorian race meeting. We'll be heading back to Warrnambool for sure next year.

02/11 Scott Taylor US tour update
Monday after the ABA Fall Nationals in Del Mar. I am pretty sore and tired....
Track was probably the second worst I have ever ridden (1st Sunday Knox 98). It rained really hard Tuesday and Wednesday while they were building the track and the whole place turned into a swimming pool.

I guess it did dry out a lot but no where near enough. Lanes 1 & 8 forget about getting any pull.. if you can stay even with the other guys you're doing unreal!! All the jump had real soft spots where the flat ground meets the start of the transition.. baaaaaaad. End of the third straight rythm made me laugh everytime I rode through it. In and out of a sandpit.. real slow.. hahaa

Anyway, I did manage to get some really good results. Day 1. Won a bunch of A Pro heats including my quarter final.. winning my semi final until Ken Cools decided to give me the old hip and shoulders in the first corner.. him doing that in combination with the ruts and speed bumps you had to deal with made me get all loose, losing my clip and a hand putting me way back.. in 5th or 6th.. anyway I had no speed for the second straight and some dude was trying to pass me so I basically rode him off the track hahaha.. then he threw a handful of dirt at me while i was riding down the third straight.. hahaha (but then ofcourse later he was all regrets saying "no hard feelings"... ) anyway I didn't make it to the main avent for A Pro, so I was pissed and got out in the Pro Open semi and holeshot that thing to the first corner.. made the main.. but got lane eight. errrr. Got a good first straight but was left to ride the first turn on the outside.. passed some guys and found myself in third. all the way to the line.. I was stoked with that and it didn't seem to matter about the A Pro final.

Day 2. Well the track didn't get any harder and still all the same bad spots (97% of the track anyway) Again won some A Pro Heats.. Quarters no problems, semi no problems this time.. actually Ken went down in his semi in the first turn.. karma.. Had a good lane for the Final... unfortunately I was chillin' at the start while everyone was snappin' found myself in 5th in the first corner.. but laid down some power and passed a couple of guys in the second straight.. then down the third I could see the leaders and went for a move down the outside.. caught right up and and did the old high low and it made a pretty easy win considering my crap start.. (my only bad one all day).
Again I done well in Pro Open.. Semi almost holeshot again but J-rich came through.. I came in second. In the final.. once again they give me lane 8. I got a good first straight... I knew I couldn't see anyone.. until the first jump.. when j-rich and polkamp came through.. I hit to the inside along with a couple of elbows and went back to 4th... I went for Lopez on the second corner but hit one of the only dry parts of the track and slid out.. I got up just to see J-rich go down hard in the rythm.. damn.. I got 7th that was a good day on a bad track.

Warwick won AA Pro Day 2... a bit of an Aussie sweep.

I am staying down here in San Diego for a week then I'll probably be staying with KB for a few weeks then the ABA Grands then home..

I have got plenty of people to thank on this trip... I'll make sure they get a very special mention on my last report.

Over & Out.

Scott

02/11 BMXPros.com Race Report
ABA Fall Nationals Del Mar, CA
The ABA BMX National race series came to Sunny Southern California this past weekend and gave all the BMX racers one last chance to race at a regular ABA national of the season. Unfortunately, Sunny So Cal wasn't that way just days before the ABA came to town and the rains made for one soft BMX track. The ABA did there best to make a bad situation better, working on the track late into the nights and doing what they could to make the track hard, but unfortunately, it was just a mess. All of the riders stepped up and made the best of the weekend and still made the ABA Fall Nationals a great weekend. Here is how the BMXPros.com riders finished up.

Cristian Becerine is one of the most impressive Pro riders on the BMX national scene, as no matter what the conditions, sanction, or event, he is a threat to win. Cristian did just that on Saturday night, as he won the Pro Open main event from start to finish. A crash in the AA Pro Semi kept him out of the main on day 1, but Day 2 was a different story, as he was in the main event, and was battling for the lead going into the first turn, but once again, the soft track wreaked havoc on Cristian and he wound up on the ground. Cristian got up and finished 7th. Cristian's sponsors include Crupi, O'Neal, Answer, UGP, ODI, Sun Ringle, Marwi, Shimano, Tool Shed, Powerbar, BMXpros.com, Cyto Sport, and Thomson Seat Posts.

Kyle Bennett finds himself in a nice spot after the ABA Fall Nationals. With a 2nd on Sunday in AA Pro, Kyle has secured himself, along with 3 other riders, with a shot at winning the ABA #1 Pro title. Similar to what happened in the NBL, Kyle has the least amount of pressure on him at the ABA Grands, and with the incredible way he rode all weekend on the soft track, once its back to a normal style track in Tulsa, it will be very interesting to see what the NBL #1 Pro from Texas has for the rest of the ABA Pros. Kyle was also in the AA main on Saturday, where he finished up 7th. Kyle's sponsors include Free Agent, KHS, Answer, Sun Ringle, UGP, Truvativ, Velo, Vans, S&M bars, ATI, Shimano, Profile, Powerbar, Smith, Cyto Sport, and BMXpros.com.

Randy Stumpfhauser came to the ABA Falls looking to improve on his impressive scores going into the ABA Grand Nationals, and on Sunday he did just that, as he finished 3rd. Randy already has the maximum number of wins in the Pro Cruiser class, so he focussed on AA Pro only this weekend. Saturday wasn't as kind to Randy, as a mud hole seemed to suck him in around turn one during the semi, and took all his speed and chances of making the main event away. Randy, just like Kyle will go into the Grands with a chance at winning the #1 Pro title and the Hyundai Santa Fe that the ABA will be awarding to the new #1 Pro. Randy's sponsors include GT Bicycles, Hyundai, ODI, IRC Tires, Shimano, Fox Racing, Smith, Sun Ringle, Bombshell Forks, AC, Thomson, Powerbar, CTI Knee Braces, Tool Shed, Marwi, FSA Headsets, S & M, Cyto Sport, and BMXpros.com

BMXPros.com proudly represents Cristian Becerine, Kyle Bennett, Dale Holmes, Christophe Leveque, Brandon Meadows, John Parker, Jamie Staff, and Randy Stumpfhauser. For more information on any of the riders, please e-mail Pete Dylewski @ PeteD@BMXpros.com, or visit www.BMXpros.com

The Vet Pro combined prize pool is now over $1,000 and climbing. If you haven't entered yet especially all you A and AA pros enter now and be part of this years richest race meeting in Victoria.

01/11 Wodonga's Border BMX track update
The Border BMX Track in Wodonga has been updated. Here's the inside scoop:
"We have just had a working bee and made the track nice and wide. We didn't change that much, just made the third straight triple about 7 1/2 metres long. To hit the four pack it is tight and we are sure heaps of people will love it."
