28/03 Supercross adds Olympic Hopeful to the Factory Team

Supercross BMX Press Release
Supercross BMX adds Olympic Hopeful Mens Elite to the Factory Team – Welcome to the team Downtown Tyler Brown

Apple Valley, CA - Two weekends ago at the UCI Round 9 and 10 at the NBL Gator Nationals the BMX world got to see Tyler Brown take his first laps as a Supercross BMX Factory Team member. After privateering on a Supercross EVO iS at the start of the season it seemed like it was only going to be a matter of time before Tyler joined the Supercross BMX family. "After hanging out in the Supercross pits at the Goodyear Nationals and UCI race where Tyler took his first UCI Podium and then after hanging out with Sammy in Madrid where Tyler made his first UCI SX main we knew Tyler was a perfect fit for the team". Said Supercross BMX owner Bill Ryan.

Tyler and Supercross BMX just seem to agree with each other. And after watching how fast Tyler makes his Supercross EVO iS go, we are sure you will agree.

Tyler didn't have the best of luck his first weekend as an official Supercross BMX team member. He looked to be the man to beat after winning all 3 of his motos and quarter on Friday and not only winning but winning with style as he kept throwing down little moto whips while leading, but that good luck came to an end both days as unclipping in his Semi on Friday and crashing into Redmans' Steven Cisar as he came unclipped in Saturday's semi kept him out of the mains. But Tyler took it all in stride and kept smiling while he signed autographs for the fans and was already getting prepped for this weekend in DeSoto Texas where he will be racing the ABA Pro Series Nationals and the USAC championship.

Look for big things out of Tyler and his Supercross BMX team mate Samantha Cools as the both get ready to try to take their shot for Olympic Gold this summer in Bejing.

For more information on Sammy, Tyler, Kenth and the entire Supercross team is up to check out http://www.supercrossbmx.com for news and product updates and more.

28/03 BMXA National Championships - Practice Cancelled

BMXA press release
BMXA have cancelled the Open Practice session planned for Tuesday 15th April. This is due to the increased time required to modify the Start Hill Scaffold and Track Changes necessary to convert the UCI Supercross Track to the Nationals track format. BMXA have employed a professional scaffold build team and a strong team of dedicated track builders as we aim to provide the best possible track for all competitors to enjoy and want to ensure that this process is not rushed, so we can minimize potential difficulties during the event. For all further updates please check www.bmxaustralia.com.au

[Editor: On a side note, Australian riders will get to experience the official UCI gate, the Pro-Gate, for the first time at the Supercross round and Australian BMX Championships. The Pro-Gate is one of the safest starting gates ever produced. It will be a great introduction to the gate for those who plan to go on to compete at the World Championships.]

26/03 2008 XBR Autumn Series

XBR press release
On Thursday the 13th March, BMX Australia's letter was presented to a solicitor and a number of options discussed. Unfortunately, there is no quick solution if we are to do this properly and, as a result, we are left with no other option but to cancel the rest of the planned 2008 XBR Autumn Series.

This is most disappointing for me personally, as I have been planning this event since September 2007. As a direct result of this series - XBR has been able to introduce Online Registration and Payment as well as facilitating the development of the BEM software that now allows Transponders to be used for greater accuracy in scoring the sport. We did not keep this technology to ourselves but have put it out there for all clubs and associations to take advantage of.

Whilst there is much more to be said, I will leave it to the next edition of the paper.

I would like to thank all the riders, families and individuals from all over Australia and New Zealand that have supported the idea of an independent series and want you to know that we will be doing everything within our power to get XBR racing happening soon.

See you at the track.

26/03 RIP Washington trails

by Shane Jenkins
Some times we stumble across links that we have to share with our readers, many of them come from readers, this one is from our forum Administrator Mark Dobson. Thanks Mark.

It's always the case that you hear about legendary dirt jumps after they have been flattened. In most cases though they are immortalised in many photos and hours of video footage. Thanks to the likes of youtube and the many great BMX websites out there we are all able to enjoy them.

The Washington trails are inspiring, make sure you catch this video!

www.leukemia-lymphoma.org
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society ® Fighting Blood-Related Cancers

Since its inception in 1949, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society® has been committed to finding cures for all blood-related cancers, but has not been able to effectively portray the breadth of its mission under a banner that emphasized a focus only on leukemia. Additionally, the Society is deeply concerned with the dramatic and unexplained rise in incidence rates of lymphoma during the last half of the 20th century. So on February 1, 2000, the Society unveiled a new name and logo. The new name, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society® , along with a tag line, Fighting Blood-Related Cancers, was crafted to clarify the diseases that the Society fights.

We`re the same organization with the same mission. But we want everyone with a connection to blood-related cancers - patients, physicians and supporters - to understand that we are committed to fighting all hematological malignancies, including leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

The Society was further moved to implement the name change by a startling rise in lymphoma incidence rates. Statistics from the National Cancer Institute show that from the mid 70s into the 90s, lymphoma rates rose by more than 70 percent, which made it the third fastest rising cancer in the country during that period. Today 454,000 Americans have lymphoma. In 1999 alone an estimated 64,000 new cases were diagnosed. New cases of non-Hodgkin`s lymphoma are rising by 1.1 percent per year while death rates are rising by 1.8 percent each year.

21/03 S&M Bikes Grill Team Wins The First Fire Magic Grill-off Series Event:

ABA press release
The first of nine Fire Magic Premium Grills Grill-Off Series kicked off this past weekend the ABA BMX Winter Nationals event in Phoenix, AZ. The turn out for the weekends events was excellent. The new track layout, the perfect weather, and the stiff competition were second to none. The Fire magic Grill-Off was a HUGE buzz in the pits and everybody was ready to show case their secret recipes for the judges. With well over an impressive 30 entries, the judges had to narrow the Grill-Off field down to just the top five best of the best dishes. And believe me, it was hard, everything looked and tasted sooooo good!

When the dust settled we had ABA National #1 Girl and Girl Cruiser, Dominique Daniels draw the winning recipe out of the hat. The S&M Bikes Grill Team came out on top with a special dish they called the SWEET & SOUR Slam Bar-BBQ Tri-Tip. For their efforts the S&M Bikes Grill team will get to choose from either one of the most innovative, finest outdoor grills on the market today—the all-new Fire Magic Aurora A530s (A530s-1E1N-62 / stand-alone model) or A530i (A530i-1E1N / built-in model) worth a retail value of $4,573.00 and $2,844.00 respectively. With a list of incredible features, including industry-best cast stainless steel burners that are guaranteed for life, the A530s—like every Fire Magic Grill—burns hotter and cooks better than any grill you have every owned—unless, of course, it’s been a Fire Magic.

ABA BMX and Fire Magic Premium Grills would like to thank everyone that enter the first stop on the Fire Magic Grill-Off series. We would also like to send out a BIG Congratulations to the S&M Bikes Grill Team for the the win!

The next Stop on the Fire magic Grill-Off Series tour will be on 3/28/08 at the ABA BMX Super Nationals - Desoto, TX. And if I know those Texas boys, there will be some hot grill-off competition for the win at the Metroplex facility!

19/03 What future?

by Shane Jenkins
I have always believed if you want to move forward, to progress and grow you need to look at the past. BMX racing has a rich history, and thank God someone actually documented some of it in Joe Kid on a Stingray or most current day BMXers would have no idea about BMX back in the day.

There are some significant events that have lead to the decline in popularity of our sport since those early days. The diversification of BMX for example. In it's infant years BMX racing was the only form of BMX, there was no competition. As it progressed people started riding in skate parks but still used race bikes, then they started to evolve from modified race bikes to purpose built freestyle bikes. A new era was born, and BMXers were divided. Flat land started at around the same time, and dirt jumping followed a few years later. Instead of just one choice of BMX racing there were many. BMX racing was the only one with real rules, the only one that would require massive amounts of training to be competitive, and a lot of travel to become an established rider. On the flip side you could have one or two cool tricks up your sleeve at your local skate park and be considered a local hero.

Mountain Bike racing started a few years after BMX racing and provided another outlet for cyclists that love dirt. In the meantime BMX racing was taking a big hit in numbers.

BMX racing was still progressing, and developing as a sport. Manual operated starting gates were being replaced with automated electronic systems because manual was inconsistant...you could say random...which was considered dangerous. Tracks became more technical, berms were being built bigger and bigger and racing was getting faster.

Professional racing became truly professional in the US when the likes of Frenchman Christophe Leveque and other foreigners pushed the sport to a new level.

It was about 1996 when clip pedals were introduced to BMX racing. Although it didn't have a huge impact to start with it's very uncommon to see people using platform pedals when racing. It has undeniably added a new dimension to racing. Riders use them for various benefits, better foot positioning and more power through the entire pedal stroke amongst them. But there are others out there that use them because everyone else does. Not because they are fun, not because they like them, but because they want to remain competitive.

It was also in the late 90's where BMX racing was being pushed to Olympic representatives for inclusion into the prestigious Olympic games.

There have been a lot of small changes to the sport since the announcement of it's inclusion in the Beijing Olympic games. Each one a stepping stone to what seems a new sport completely Supercross BMX Racing. Bigger jumps, bigger starting hills, bigger crashes, and riders putting more on the line than ever before.

It's clear that BMX is split into two divisions, those that aspire to reach Olympic level and those who don't. Does it make sense that they should race on the same tracks any more? For riders chasing the Olympic dream they need to push themselves harder than ever before, which isn't possible on a normal BMX track. You see changes to many tracks around Australia with the benefit of those guys in mind, and in most cases to the detriment of the grass roots of the sport. The guys that keep racing a float by getting along to the races week in week out.

While Olympic teams can have up to 3 male and 2 female riders in their teams everyone is impacted by these changes. Let's say that 20 riders from each country have a real chance at competing for their country and there are thousands of other riders in that country what should be done? Do you change every track to help the elite develop and lose everyone else in the meantime? I'm surprised that more countries haven't followed the US and built a track specifically for the elite riders, if they want to help those riders it's the only option, if they want to keep the sport going I don't see an alternative.

For our sport to evolve I think we need to analyse the past, and to an extent de-evolve. If we could get more bums on seats by running a series of no clips races then why not try it? If people are more comfortable with the standard NBL/ABA cadences forget about random gates.

If we don't look at the elite and everyone else as two different markets something is going to give. Let's look at motocross racing, you don't see supercross races being held on junior motocross tracks do you?

18/03 Hawkesbury NSW regional

by Adam Carey
Over 400 riders rocked up the the Hawkesbury BMX track to compete in the qualifying regionals for the state championships. I was going to the track very excited as I had heard they had completely rebuilt the track with a pro section and all. I got up at 4.30am to get down to macca's and catch a ride with Greg Westman. We got to the track at around 7.30 and had a walk around it. I was very impressed with how the track looked with a berm jump leading into the pro section. The track was very technical, but due to weather was only finished saturday before racing. The track was under water the week before.

After much discussion it was finalised that the AA pro's were the only ones to hit the pro section however we are unable to hit up the berm jump due to safety issue. Racing was set to start up and everyone looked very excited with a fantastic atmosphere.

The moto's were great to watch and see some up and coming riders. Lowe was a massive stand out all day. The race action was tight in all aspects, especially in A and AA pro. Due to the track not quiet being settled it was easy to see 3 people go down in one turn from washing out, however this is what BMX is all about.

The finals were exciting to watch as most of the action was close. In A pro the final was packed with up and coming riders. Cameron, Twentyman and Clark were riding well. It was GT's Ben Clark who stood out though as the dominating rider. His skill and style was so good to watch and you can tell he will be one to watch as he gets older and starts moving up through the bigger boys. It was Clark who won.

Pro Women was good to watch. MCS's Ash Craig rode strongly all day.

AA pro was very interesting. The racing was tight and hard with only 9 riders. Carey and Jobson went into a run off to make the final and it was Carey who came out on top and went through to the final. The final was fairly solid with a lot of hard competition. Darrell, Cameron, Elliot, Docherty, Penrose,Scruse, Twentyman and Carey. The 3 final-final system is in use for regional series and it proved that racing was hard.

First final had Cameron holeshot with Darrell slot into the second spot and Elliott rode around Carey for third and pushing him behind Docherty. Penrose and Twentyman hit  hard in the first turn and Twentyman went down. Over the pro section Carey slammed hard and had to walk his bike to the line. By this time Cameron, Darrell, Elliot and Docherty had finalised their spots and rolled through to the line.

The second final had Darrell and Cameron holeshot with Carey on the outside. Elliot and Docherty take Carey up and Penrose had a great run out of turn 1. Scruse went low on turn 1 and washed his speed away. Elliot slots into three and Penrose drops off the pace and falls back to 5th. Darrell takes the win with Cameron in second, Elliot third, Docherty fourth, Penrose fifth, Carey sixth and Scruse for 7th.

The third final has the decider between Cameron, lane 3 and Darrell lane 1. The gate dropped and Darrell, Carey and Cameron get pretty even starts. Darrell hit the motor about half way down the gate and is gone. Moving across on Carey and Cameron. Cameron sticks with Darrell while Carey loses it in turn 1 to Elliot. Was pretty much single file until the pro section were moves were made for the win and passing for better spots. Darrell got the win, Cameron came home second and Elliot and Docherty 3rd and 4th.The rest of the spots were pretty unknown as no money is given out until the end of the series, but fantastic racing all the same.

18/03 STAATS / BB Cycles / Fly Hills Race Report

STAATS / BB Cycles / Fly Hills press release
A record 538 nominations ensured an exciting (and long) round two of the WA Super Series at the Hills track in Perth on Saturday 15 March. This was 100 more nominations than last years State Titles. The STAATS / BB Cycles / Fly race team was out in force again – with all 5 riders taking part – and all managing to stay on their bikes!

Back from the recent Champbikx round in Penrith, where he placed second on both days, Jaymin King lined up in the 15 Boys Expert class, and the A-Pro. In the 15’s, Jaymin went 1-2-1 in the moto’s, and was just beaten for the win in the main. He went one better in the A-Pro – taking the overall win. To top his night off, Jaymin was a member of the winning 16” relay challenge team, with the prize being a new DK General Lee 16” bike!

Mason King was also riding strong, winning plenty of motos, taking the Open Men final, and placing 4th in the A-Men. The A-Men was again a “3 final – final”, meaning final placings were the combined results over 3 races.

Grace McDonald was entered in the 8 girls class, but due to the lack of riders in this division, was again forced to race with 9 and 10 year old girls. Grace rode well all day, but was unable to progress to the finals. As the season progresses, we look forward to more girls her own age racing.

Back from injury was Doyle Holl - racing the 11 Boys expert class, and 11-12 voucher class. Still not 100% fit, Doyle was still able to make both finals. Doyle will race his first National Titles in Adelaide next month, and should be fully fit by then.

Daniel Cobham was racing in the 13 Boys expert and 13-14 Cruiser classes. After an average meeting at Bunbury, Daniel was back in form – clean sheeting the 13 Boys Expert class, and finishing 3rd in the combined cruiser class. He was also in the winning 16” team – scoring a new DK General Lee 16”.

All credit to the Hills club members and all the officials for a smooth, well run event.

The team is proudly sponsored by STAATS Bicycles, BB Cycles and Fly Racing.

14/03 XBR cancels first two rounds of Autum series

XBR press release
With less than 48hrs until XBR’s first race event in its AUTUMN SERIES – BMX Australia has sent out a letter directing clubs to cease any involvement in this independent race series.  A number of calls were made by BMXA employee; Andrew Nolen to Northern Park’s Terry Nichols, Park Orchards Pam Beerens and myself - advising that action could be taken against their clubs for simply running a canteen or letting XBR use their starting gate. It was also implied that riders could have action taken against them for participating in this event. Eg the loss of their BMXA membership

Final paragraph from BMXA’s letter to the clubs:

“ You are therefore directed to cease forthwith any planning or organisation of any
proposed event to be conducted by an unaffiliated company or individual.
A breach of this direction may lead to disciplinary action under the provisions
outlined in the BMXA Constitution.”

Kind regards,
Mr Barry Knight
President BMX Australia
10/03/2008

We have gone out of our way to protect clubs and riders in this series – dealing directly with councils as well as securing the best insurance available to riders in this country.

We do not and have not ever wanted to put riders or clubs at risk. Nor would we want to put them at risk from any disciplinary action from any BMXA board. Until today, the only concerns the governing bodies have raised relate to insurance. Having met all insurance requirements we do not understand why these threats are now being made.

However, in the best interests of the clubs and riders we have decided to cancel the first two races and seek legal advice. We can then make an informed decision about the future of this series.

Thank you for your support and we will be contacting all riders who have already entered the series.

13/03 Standard Byke Company and NBL forge new National Partnership

NBL press release
Hilliard, Ohio – The National Bicycle League (NBL) is proud to announce the formation of a new national level partnership with Standard Byke Company (www.standardbyke.com). The Standard brand has earned a loyal following in both racing and freestyle over the past two-decades and their renewed commitment to racing is good news for fans of high quality products and rider-owned companies.

Standard is one of only a handful of rider-owned companies in BMX and they continue to forge new ground in all areas of development and production. Rick Moliterno’s company has very recently taken over full control of production and manufacturing at their new factory in Davenport, IA. This will translate into a range of improvements to their already solid line of 125R race frames and forks plus a bundle of new products to compliment their American-Built line.

Moliterno, who has deep roots in bicycle motocross, is eager to see the racing side grow and the new partnership comes at a perfect time as the sport nears its Olympic milestone. A blend of national exposure, BMX Today coverage, and products for a variety of NBL programs will help expose their brand beyond their Eastern strongholds and help promote the brand to their core customers across the country.

“It is great to be working with Standard on a national level again - Rick Moliterno has maintained a steady presence in the sport and his commitment to growing BMX makes our partnership even more valuable” said Kevin O’Brien, NBL Marketing Director.

New Standard products will start to roll out in April and will be available at select bikeshops across the country and also through Goodtimes Superstore (www.goodtimessuperstore.com) – Moliterno’s retail location. The store stocks BMX, skate, snow and also offers online sales through the website.

The Standard Army has been quietly growing over the past few years and the 2008 team is stronger than ever. To compliment the partnership, the team will host pre-race clinics at the Stars & Stripes, Music City and Speedway Nationals. Standard is jumping back in to the national limelight at just the right time.

“We are stoked to be working with the NBL and trust that Standard will be represented in the way that we want” said Moliterno, “and watch out for the Standard Army – we’re coming on strong in ’08”.

Check out Standard Byke Company on the web at www.standardbyke.com and visit the NBL website (www.nbl.org) to view the full national series and more.

At the Gator Nationals this year, with nobody entering Factory we used a few riders on the Jesters Team Sheet and nailed down a win.
The ABA didn’t take too lightly us running some factory Rostered riders in a different category, so we got the win yanked!! But had a great time riding anyway.
With only 4 riders we took out some teams that had 5 times that amount, and unfortunately we didn’t get to keep the points but the team had fun and that’s what really matters.

For those on the West Coast let me introduce you to JESTERS BMX. 11/03 UCI/probikx/champbikx series at Penrith

BMX Australia press release
Saturday

Queensland’s Jared Graves and Perth’s Nicole Callisto both improved Australia’s chances of taking the maximum number of BMX riders to the Beijing 2008 Olympics. By winning ahead of competing countries New Zealand, China, Japan and Hong Kong today in Penrith, the Australians gained valuable UCI points from this Oceania Round 9.

Mountain bike champ, 25 year old Graves, got an early lead on New Zealand’s Olympic hopeful Marc Willers. Close contact in the first turn between Willers and Penrith’s Luke Madill gave the kiwi second place. After getting an unlucky outside starting lane Madill was still content with third place on his home track.

Graves saved some power throughout the earlier heats but in the final it was not all easily sailing.

“It was a bit of a shady lap in the final. I had a few moments but I had a good start and held it from there,” explained Graves.

Even though Graves was focusing on riding for country points, beating his fellow High Performance team mate, Luke Madill still gave him some extra assurance.

“Yes it was really good to beat him (Madill). I knew he was going to be super fast here on his home track,” explained Graves. “Everybody always races better on their home tracks.”

With only the top three riders scoring the important points for Australia it was Queenslander, Kamakazi, who had a disappointing run just finishing out of the final after placing fifth in the semi.

The women’s race saw a strong comeback by Sydney based, Nicole Callisto. Callisto’s recent knee reconstructions appeared fully recovered as she dominated every elite women's race. After only being allowed to train for the last six weeks the former World Junior Champion says her knee is feeling as strong as ever.

“It hasn’t been better,” she claimed. “I’m feeling strong as well. I got out and led from the start and I jumped the step up so that gave me an advantage. I was just aggressive from the start and on every straight."

The 20 year old impressed her coach, former national team coach, Sean Dwight.

“This will really help her confidence and you’ve got to win races to do that,” said Dwight. “This will have an enormous effect on her and the track in Penrith is one of the most technical in Australia.

“This is the first step toward building her Olympic preparation. Now is the time to be coming into form.”

Her training partner Melissa Mankowski placed second. Mankowski now moves into equal second place with fellow Queenslander, Krystal Cranfield. Cranfield suffered a fall in the heats but regained composure to place third ahead of National Champion Tanya Bailey in fifth and Kelly Percy in fourth.

In the junior men's Adelaide's Sam Willoughby won and cemented his lead in the series while women's leader, Lauren Reynolds from Bunbury was beaten by Canberra's Caroline Buchanan but maintains her lead.

Sunday
Two Queenslanders have stamped their claim on a spot in Australia’s first ever BMX team to compete at this year’s Beijing Olympics. Krystal Cranfield originally from Gladstone rode strongly to win the tenth round of the UCI Oceania Series in Penrith today. Fellow Queenslander, Jared Graves from Toowoomba repeated his win yesterday to finish in front of New Zealand’s Marc Willers.

The women’s race saw a challenge between Cranfield and yesterday’s winner, Nicole Callisto in the third of their three races. With National Champion, Tanya Bailey looking for some space it was Callisto who went over the final berm and was lucky not to sustain injury on her recent knee reconstruction. Tied up in the crash was Queenslander Melissa Mankowski. Bailey continued to the line to claim second while Brisbane’s Kelly Percy placed third. After the three races however it was still Cranfield in first with Callisto making it into second spot overall Bailey's finishes gave her third overall.

The men’s race also claimed a crash victim with Adelaide’s Brian Kirkham landing heavily in the second straight. Kirkham's crash took down Brisbane’s Glen Codega. Kirkham was taken away for further medical attention to his left hand. Graves and Willers managed to stay clear while Sydney’s Alex Cameron claimed third. Local favourite Luke Madill rode into second and Kamakazi placed fifth.

In the junior men's race the domination of Adelaide's Sam Willoughby continued. Willoughby won the final and looks unbeatuer for the overall Oceania Series.

A win in the last race was not enough to secure Townsville's Rachel Bracken an overall victory with Bunbury's Lauren Bracken taking honours in the junior women.

Riders now prepare for the first ever BMX Supercross World Cup in the southern hemisphere in Adelaide. in April as the selection process starts to get more intense.

10/03 Spring Fever – NBL Pro Series Heats Up With Three Big National Weekends

NBL press release
Starting with the Gator Nationals in West Palm Beach, Florida, pros will have the chance to race three big NBL weekends over the next two months.  That means six big races with big cash payouts and points, plus all the 2008 NBL Pro races feature Pennant pre-races, UGP Opens, BAWLS bunny-hop contests, and much more.

NBL is famous for hosting Nationals on the best tracks in America and a busy spring will kick off with the Gator Nationals at Okeeheelee BMX, March 14-16. The Gator Nationals feature two NBL Pro events plus the last two UCI Continental races and promises to showcase yet another clash of Olympic hopefuls, International stars, and plenty of blazing amateur action.

With a hectic travel schedule for many of the top Pros, a race practically in their backyard will be a welcome addition to the NBL Pro Series. The newly revamped Whittier Narrows BMX Track, located in South El Monte, California, will host the Pacific Nationals, April 4-6, and for many of the pros, an easy drive to one of SoCal’s finest tracks.  The track is located in the Whittier Narrows Park and easily accessible from every county in the Los Angeles area. This marks the first time since 2002 that an NBL Pro national has been held near the ‘City of Angels’ and it’s destined to make history.

The NBL Pro series then heads east for the Freedom Nationals held at the popular NOVA BMX track in Woodbridge, VA, April 25-27.  Paul and Angela Kitcheloe have been busy preparing their track and the weekend will offer even more activities for everyone. Riders can take a clinic with the Intense/Bizzarro team at noon on Friday and then race the Pennant pre-race that same evening. Saturday and Sunday will serve up back-to-back days of national racing and lots of entertainment for the whole family.

NBL’s long-standing tradition of hosting the best Pro BMX series in America continues and the top pros from the US and around the world will be competing for the highly-coveted NBL Championship title. And speaking of Champions, Free Agent’s Kyle Bennett, the current NBL and UCI World Champion, picked up another two big NBL Pro wins in Arizona and sits atop the NBL Men’s standings ahead of GT’s Randy Stumpfhauser and HP/AT&T’s Donny Robinson.

Formula’s Alise Post did the same in Elite Women and is looking to put a stop to Kim Hayashi’s amazing string of Championship titles which currently stands at five. Intense’s Stephanie Barragan, who has become well-known for her holeshots, is eyeing her first pro title and VBS-Kenda/BAWLS’ Rachel Smith will be looking to jump herself into the mix.

Haro’s Logan Collins leads the Super-Ex standings but Redline’s Denzel Stein and RacePlace.com’s Warren McDow have come on strong and both have their sights set on the title.  Formula’s Tim Dinger is looking for his first Masters title and has a good lead over Tommy Opincar and Philip Potosnak.  Hey, don’t count out Supercross’s Kenth Fallen – with back-to-back wins in Arizona, he’ll be gunning for the wins in Florida.

Hey, if you can’t make to one of these great races, you can still watch it through a ‘Live’ webcast on GO211.com and be a part of the action.  This year’s format will feature pre-race shows, athlete interviews, industry news, and tons of great racing action. 06/03 One Bicycles (Australia) Team update

One Bicycles/ECI press release
The One Bicycles grass roots team are ramping up for the national championships which are edging so close now. Kyle Horton and Isabella Penglase headed to Canberra for the ACT titles on the weekend and did well.

Kyle Horton raced in the A Pro class and was looking good after winning his semi final. Stuck in lane 6 for the final he had some work ahead of him, he was winning down the first straight but was too far to the outside of the track entering the first corner and had to settle for a 6th.

Isabella "Issy" Penglase rode well against some hard comp with four out of the national top 5 ranked riders in her 10 girls class, she managed to run with them and finished in 4th place over all. Issy also raced her Cruiser in the 8-13 cruiser class and as one of the youngest in the class finished a respectable 7th, not too far behind the rest.

Chris Van Winden is still trying to recover from his knee injury.

04/03 Beyond Bikes team update

Beyond Bikes press release
2008 ACT BMX Championships Report
The Beyond Bikes BMX race team traveled to Melba BMX track for the running of the 2008 ACT Championships on the weekend of March 1st-2nd. The guys presented themselves and their equipment extremely well and rode brilliantly to achieve a mixed bag of results. The Beyond Bikes ‘Rider Development Program’ was a key agenda for the weekend with both Billy and Adam amongst the crowd handing out flyers and explaining the program in detail. The team had a great display on show with all team banners and bikes visible along with an Intense Race Bike, Intense Podium Frame and Troy Lee Designs race apparel.

Billy Jolliffe (AA Men) was in red hot form showing blistering speed and control. Billy was undefeated all weekend and finished in the top spot on the podium. Billy’s hard training is definitely paying dividends and he will be one of the main contenders come this weeks UCI rounds at Penrith.

Adam Sanderson (AA Men) rode brilliant. Adam has really taken the premier division (AA Men) by storm and looked like one of the main contenders that could possibly cause an upset by beating Billy. Adam gave himself every opportunity to win but was beaten fair and square and finished in the number 2 spot on the podium making it a 1 – 2 finish for the Beyond Bikes Race Team. Adam is preparing himself now for the Champbikes round at Penrith this weekend.

Brock Griffiths (10yrs) rode extremely well all weekend but had a little hiccup in the semi coming down challenging for first place. Brock has learnt a valuable lesson and that is to consolidate his top four spot in future semi finals as only the top 4 out of each semi go through to the final. Brock also competed in cruiser and finish with the number 3 ACT plate.

Brad Goman (35-39) rode in the cruiser class and qualified for the main event comfortable. However there was a challenge made though and that being that Brad couldn’t win from gate 8. Well the challenge was on, Brad selected gate 8 in his pick got a fantastic start went into the first turn jockeying for position then while making a move through the apex bumped wheels with another competitor which seen Brad fall and finished with the number 8 ACT plate.

Beyond Bikes would like to thank Intense BMX, Troy Lee Designs, Intense Tire Systems, THE, SINZ, Profile, Sun Rims, Nike, ECI, VSI and Steve Cramer Products for there continued support with the team.

On Sunday March 2, the Bunbury BMX Club played host to the first of eight rounds of the 2008 Western Australian BMX Super Series. It would also be the first event for the newly formed STAATS / BB Cycles / Fly race team. The track was well prepared, weather fine, and an excellent turn out of riders ensured a good days racing.

Mason King lined up in the A-Men, and the home track knowledge enabled him to breeze through his moto’s (even allowing him time for the odd “x up” over the first straight doubles) and ensured him a spot in the final.

This would be a “3 final – final”, meaning final placings were the combined results over 3 races. Unfortunately, a crash in one of the races meant Mason finished off the podium this weekend.

The youngest member of the team is Grace McDonald, who has only just turned 8. As there were insufficient 8 girls (or 9 yo’s either), Grace raced her first main event out of sprockets in a combined 8-10 yo girls class, and came away with second in the final to the current 10yo #3A! Grace doubled up with a 2nd in the voucher class also. Look out when she gets to race girls her own age!

Doyle Holl was racing the 11 Boys expert class, and had the track sorted during practice, and easily won his first voucher race. A crash in the first corner of his age race resulted in a trip to hospital, a couple of x-rays on a suspect shoulder and an early end to the day. Good news is the x-rays were clear, and Doyle will be on the track and ready for the next Super Series at the Hills track in two weeks time.

Daniel Cobham was racing in the 13 Boys expert and 13-14 Cruiser classes, and after doubling at last years state titles, was looking forward to continuing his winning form. While he easily got through the moto’s in both classes, Daniel was unable to progress past the semi’s in 20”, and finished 4th in the combined cruiser class.

Jaymin King lined up in the 15 Boys Expert class, and dominated his motos’ – winning three from three, while also finding time to style it up for the crowd down the third straight. In the final he was edged out for first by a wheel, and finished in second place. An excellent result in this highly competitive class. Jaymin’s next race is round 6 & 7 of the Champbikx series in Penrith.

Overall, a mixed weekend for the team results wise, but there were plenty of STAATS jerseys and bikes and Fly clothing at the pointy end of a lot of races. It’s only going to get better from here!

The team is proudly sponsored by STAATS Bicycles, BB Cycles and Fly Racing.

03/03 Aussie Championships entries close Wednesday

by bmxultra.com
Entries for the Australian Championships close this Wednesday March 6th?? That's the first mistake I found on the entry form when I was filling things out this morning. Wednesday is the 5th. Another thing that was a concern is the qualifying criteria for entering the National Championships is that you must have competed at the 2007 state championships in your home state. For South Australia their most recent state championships were earlier this year, their 2007 state championships were before the 2007 national championships. Confused? So am I. I am guessing that this wasn't factored in for states running their state championships at the start of the year.

If you are entering for the event like me don't fall into the same trap I did. There is an entry form attached to the "event brochure", after I filled it out and went looking for ticket information for the Supercross event the weekend before I realised that there was another entry form. The "offical entry form" which is a seperate document. And if that's not confusing enough, just wait until you have to tackle the entry fee structure chart.

I am sure that these small things can be sorted out easily enough for next year.

Just remember to get your entry in on Wednesday, or is that Thursday, March 6th?
