30/09 Interview: Courtney Tomei

At bmxultra.com we're inspired everyday by some of the simplest things. The latest was a thread on Vintage BMX, where people were discussing the websites to check out to find out more about the elite riders today. We used to do quite a few interviews and on a regular basis too but turned our focus to reviews, so we kind of feel like we neglected the interviews for some time now. So we got emailing and got 4 interviews on the go quick smart. The first of the four completed is with Californian Girl Pro Courtney Tomei who races, and works, for Supercross. The other 3 are with Aussie heavy hitters Jared Graves, Sam Willoughby and Luke Madill.

30/09 Competition: TLD XC Headline gloves winners announced!

As promised we have chosen our winners for the Troy Lee Designs gloves competition. We can't thank the guys over at Steve Cramer Products enough for being so generous. Each set of gloves retails for around $40 and SCP have provided 5 sets to give away. That's $200 in giveaways and all you needed to do was take a photo and send in an email.

You will see that some of these categories, like the crashes and race photos are stacked and others might have had just one submission. The race and crash photo categories were very hard to judge, and if it were up to me everyone would have won something, but we only had 5 sets of gloves.

We know it's an MTB photo and this is a BMX site and the other photos were great, but we didn't stipulate that the photo had to be of BMX racing, we just assumed it would be, and there is no doubt that Sean's photo would have won if this was a general photographic competition.

To the rest of you who submitted photos but didn't win, thank you for supporting the competition. Chances are pretty high for winning in these competitions so make sure you try again next time. Until then keep taking awesome photos.

Best reason you need a new set of gloves

The reason i would like to win a set of gloves is not for my 13 year old daughter as i just purchased a pair for her recently to wear at the Qld titles but i would like a set to win so i could give them to a new member of our club in Rockhampton, someone who may not be a world beater yet but turns up at every training and race night keen to do his or her best. The rider may be a long way off a win but just their keeness and enthusiasm is enough for me to think they would treasure a nice new pair of gloves.

Every club has these riders but sometimes they get overlooked but i have a keen eye and love to see kids just having a go and enjoying bmx.

29/09 BSX2011 update - new partners

BSX (short for Bicycle Supercross, and is often referred to as Backyard Supercross) is a Royal Children's Hospital fund raiser. It will be on again on Monday 17 January 2011 (during Track Attack). It will be the sixth running of the one on one backyard BMX race. BSX is the longest running event of it's kind in the world and draws a large number of competitors from around Australia. The event has pulled a few international visitors and a number of Olympians.

Welcome new BSX partners - XBR, ABD and Chris Van Winden Paintjobs
Just when we thought that we were getting off to a slow start in the partners department we've had a wave of partners join the cause for 2011.

XBR will be a gold partner again, that will make them a Gold Partner 6 years in a row. Now that's what we call support. XBR not only help us with promotions but they are the guys who have been paying the massive insurance bills for the past few years. Without their help we would have raised half of the $22,000+.

ABD, were the 2009 naming rights partner, they have rejoined as a Silver Partner for 2011, be on the look out for some cool prizes from these guys at the event.

Chris Van Winden Paintjobs have also returned to give away another great Paintjob as a prize that will be auctioned off. Chris has churned out a lot of very nice paint jobs over the years, including the frame that's mounted on top of the 30 & Over Open wheel trophy.

Track updates
The track changes are coming along very well so far, with some tweaks that will make the track faster, and a whole lot more fun and challenging, and there are still a whole lot more to come

If you are able to help swing a shovel, drive a bobcat/dingo or just help ride the track and roll the new changes in then keep an eye out for up coming working bees.

The 2011 poster for the event has been finalised. It features Luke Madill (left) who won the event in 2006 and 2007 and Josh Callan (right) who won in 2008 and 2010.

As we add partners the supported by area will be updated. So if you are interested in being a part of a very unique event and becoming a partner read the partner opportunities section below.

Go ahead and print it out and put it on your fridge, put it in your bmx club newsletter, put it on your facebook page, whatever, just spread the word.

Volunteers needed
We will also need some new volunteers for administration leading up to the event as well as running the event on the day. Jobs include parking attendants, ticket sales on the gate, taking entries, selling raffle tickets, manning the silent auctions, track maintenance and so on.

About BSX
BSX (Bicycle Supercross) is one-on-one sprint trails style racing on a backyard track built specifically to test a rider's skills. The short straights, lofty jumps and tight corners are very intense under race conditions but also fun for competitors and create quite a lot of entertainment for spectators. The event provides a unique experience for the local Victorian riders, as well as the interstate and international visitors during an off day of the Track Attack series. The events primary function is to raise money for the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation. In just five years the event has raised approximately $22,000 which has provided the hospital with new equipment. Funds have been raised through gate takings, raffles, auctions and donations.

A couple of weeks ago we showed off the 2011 Troy Lee Designs D3 helmets, we told you about the trials and tribulations of the search for a helmet that would fit one of the biggest heads in BMX. Well it was the 2011 Blue/Chrome Piston D2 helmet that made us look closer at TLD helmets. 28/09 Psykopath OZ Team

Factory Psykopath has been getting a lot of attention in Australia lately. The Factory Team in Australia is ran by two of the coolest dudes in BMX. Both race Vet Pro/Expert class and have lots of experience in the field of action sports. They are Scott Hand and Craig Fisher. Scott has skated professional for many years and has moved his talent to BMX racing, and has put himself in the main event many times in the tough Vet Pro class. Craig has raced for many years and even raced pro mountain bike, he has been awarded a few X Game medals, and is the top of his class worldwide. He has brought home a few world championships and is at the top Vet Pro in OZ. In the younger classes we have Harrison King 10X has been a national rider in Australia and is also on the 2010-11 BMX Victoria State Junior Development Squad. We are proud of our riders in the OZ and look forward to a successful year.

While taking a short break in Queensland last week we dropped into the Mackay BMX track to check out the first round of the Probikes/Champbikes series and got a whole bunch of photos. The rain bucketed down, but the show went on, and to the credit of the club the track held up extremely well to massive rainfalls.

Three bmxultra.com team members showed up for the Eastfield Experience last Sunday, it's Victoria's richest event, held in Melbourne's outer eastern suburbs. Although overnight rainfall did slow the track down a little to begin with Kyle, Chase and Shane were burning up the track in their heats.

Kyle Horton (AA Pro) has made the main at every event he has raced at since signing up with the bmxultra.com/One Bicycles team. Competition was tough at Eastfield, but Kyle made light work of qualifying for the main once again. Unfortunately he had a high speed crash exiting the first corner in the first of the three mains. Although he was very sore he showed up for the second and third main, but he was struggling with his injuries. Kyle had to settle for eighth for the day.

Chase Collins (A Pro) was looking the goods in the motos, but when it came to the semi he got caught up in traffic and just couldn't find a way into a qualifying spot. Chase is hungry for a finals berth, and he's only getting quicker and quicker, it's just a matter of time.

Shane Jenkins (30 & Over Open wheel) was looking like the Shane of old with a powerful first straight. He managed to stay at the pointy end of the field and out of trouble in qualifying, he then went on to take the win in his semi. When the gate dropped in the final Shane spun his back wheel and gave the rest of the field a bit of a head start, by the first corner he'd made his way back into the race, but wasn't able to make an impact. Shane also settled for eighth place. Expect to see more of him season heats up.

Great results from the BMXMAD Team. Bodi found out how mixing it with Kama is tuff work! Wade rode with great determination and coming out 1st. Erin had some close racing with Jaqueline. David and Jamie were mixing it up with the A Men. Greg rode with the smoothness of Dr Smooth all day and Millie smiled around the track winning every race!

21/09 One Bicycles Australia tearing it up

There were two major events on over the weekend, The Eastfield Experience and The Castle Hill Open. The full roster of the One Bicycles Australia team were tearing it up.

Eastfield Experience
It was a wet start to the day at Eastfield, but as the day progressed the track dried and just kept getting faster and smoother.
Issy Penglase was on fire on the weekend, she was very consistant, taking 3 wins from 5 races and finishing in first place overall.

Chris Van Winden came out of hibernation to take on a strong field 30 & Over Open wheel riders, Chris did a good job to make it to the semi but didn't progress to the main.

Castle Hill Open incorporating the “Chooks Challenge”
Last weekend saw the ONE Team head to Sydney to compete at the Castle Hill Open. This is one of the kids favourite tracks and they were excited to get there and have a hit out as a lead up to the N.S.W. Titles being held in a few weeks. This year the Club offered a one on one rider challenge. Riders did a time trial with the top 8 riders going in to the one on one racing. They had combined classes for the riders to add more difficulty to the event. The Chooks Challenge was held on the Saturday and the Open on the Sunday. It was also time to dust off the cruisers and take them for a run. Once we rehoused a number of spiders, the cruisers were added to the ever increasing bike count and away we went to Sydney.

Mikayla was in an 8 to 10 girl’s class on her 20”, which saw her competing against 1A in Taneisha Griffiths and 3ACT and NSW Renee Williams. In the Chooks Challenge Mikayla had the best time in her age group and went in to the challenge as the favourite. As riders competed head to head it came down to Mikayla and Taneisha in the final. Mikayla took out the challenge and pocket a tidy $30 for her efforts. On Sunday Mikayla was back in the mix with the 8 to 10 girls. Mikayla and Taneisha battled hard all day with Taneisha making Mikayla work hard down the first straight. Mikayla rode well and managed to achieve her goal of jumping the doubles in the second straight in the process. Mikayla is really pushing her skills at the moment and jumping well. She has managed to work out speeds to jump bigger jumps and is putting it in to practice every opportunity she can get. Mikayla managed to win every heat and the final on her 20” and was riding well to hold out the rest of the chasing pack.

On her cruiser Mikayla raced the 8 to 10 Boys and kept them all honest. Mikayla placed second twice and a third to make it to the final. In the cruiser final she got a bad gate and came out last chasing hard to try and make it back to the pack. When the dust settled she came in sixth. She had a great day with her racing, but it was also the presentation day for the NSW Southern Region with a nice third overall in 8 to 10 Boy’s Cruiser and taking the Regional Champion’s jersey in 10 girls for the second year running. She was in the money on the weekend making a tidy sum to add to her pocket money.

Nik and Justin rode in the 11 to 13 age group for the challenge on the Saturday. We were hoping for an all ONE final with Nik getting the second fastest time and Justin the third fastest time in the time trial, only being beaten by 13 year old racer Gage Harland. In the first heat Nik was up against his mate Steve Henderson. As the boys hit the first corner, Nik had a small lead but the rear end of the bike stepped out causing him to hit his knee on the stem finishing his race two jumps on. Nik had bruised his knee badly and was in a tonne of pain. Justin came out like a rocket in his heat against Gage and kept Gage out all race to take the first win. After a few more battles Justin took away the cash in the 11 to 13 Boy’s category beating Steve Henderson.

On Sunday at the Open, both boys rode in the 11 to 12 age group and looked comfortable with them either winning or coming second in the heats. Nik was struggling with the initial gate snap due to a sore and swollen knee, but rode hard. Justin was riding well and the two boys were only having trouble with Ben Bainey who was on fire. Ben seems to be hitting his straps just at the right time in the lead in to the Titles. After the heats Nik, Justin and Ben all sat on equal points at the top of the ladder. This was going to be a great final. Ben got a great gate and managed the hole shot to the first corner with Nik and Justin fighting for second. Nik crossed the white line in the first corner and got himself in to a bad position heading out of the corner. After some tight racing, Ben took the win from Justin and Nik with Steve Henderson and Jiye Ellis following. What a great race.

In the presentations for the NSW Southern Region, Nik took out second on both bikes behind Andy Hughes for the season and was happy to walk away with a tidy sum of cash. Due to a serious injury during the season, Justin missed to many races to secure a decent ranking this season, but must be congratulated for mixing it up with the older riders by racing up an age class and showing all and sundry why he is 1A in his class.

Nik rode awesome on his cruiser and was smashing the opposition. He managed to win all his heats and the final comfortably and was looking good. Just before the final Nik had some mechanical issues with the lockring on his cassette, but many thanks to W7 Tom Gilfedder for helping Nik out and ensuring Nik was able to take his place in the final and ensure his winning ways on the big bike for the weekend.

Josh was racing 15 to 16 boys and was in for some tough racing as usual. In the Challenge on Saturday Josh posted a fast time in the time trial and was sitting in second spot. After a number of head to head battles, it came down to Josh and a local 16 year old for the top spot. Josh rode fast and well but was not quite fast enough to win on the day. He was happy for second and walked away with some cash.

On Sunday, Josh was keeping up the form and managed some good placings, until a big accident near “Chooks Grave” saw a crash between the two leaders causing one of their bikes to fly out hitting Josh who was sitting in a close third, taking him out. He went down hard and tore off some skin and bruised his hip. He struggled for the rest of the day on both bikes, but managed to make the final sitting in seventh spot, which is where he ended up at the completion of the final. On cruiser, Josh was racing 17 to 24 men to ensure a class could exist with only 3 riders making up the class. Josh came out flying on his cruiser even after his big crash on 20”, by taking comfortable wins in every heat and finishing off with a win in the final.

For the NSW Southern Region presentations, Josh had managed to get seventh place overall in the 15 Boy’s class for the season, not bad when you are up against the likes of Kyle Hughes, Blake Moore and Chad Harlow. Josh was happy with the result. In 15 to 16 Cruiser, Josh won his first Regional Champion’s Jersey along with a nice pay packet.

It was a great weekend for the Team and a good warm up for the upcoming State Titles. This coming weekend, Olympian Luke Madill is coming down for the day on Sunday for some final preparation before the big event.

I would like to thank Kev Vahtrik for saving some good tent spots for the weekend. I would also like to thank the Beattie family for their ongoing support and for Grandma doing some last minute clothes washing to ensure the Team looked good for the race day.

20/09 Nicholas Long and Laëtitia Le Corguillé take the wins in Chula Vista

Chula Vista, California (September 18, 2010) – American Nicholass Long (Lakeside, Calif.) and Frenchwoman Laëtitia Le Corguillé rode to the top of the podium in round three of the Supercross World Cup in Chula Vista, Calif. on Saturday night.

The 21-year-old Long upset Australian strongman Sam Willoughby and 2008 Olympic champion Maris Strombergs (Latvia) in the eight-man main to take his first World Cup podium of the 2010 season.

"I had a decent start finally and didn't have to back off" Long explained after his podium ceremony. "I got cut off big time, did a little freestyle… was in fourth or fifth and just opened up and made some moves, did a clean lap and kept it together at the line."

The race came down to a fight at the line between Long and Willoughby with the American finishing first by a hair. Strombergs, who is always a favorite in any contest, grabbed the podiumâ€™s third spot. Jelle Van Gorkom (Netherlands) and Andre Sylvain (France) were fourth and fifth while Jorus Daudet (France) and Ramiro Marino (Argentina) were sixth and seventh.

Laëtitia Le Corguillé wins again
Not surprisingly, 2009 Supercross World Cup champ Laëtitia Le Corguillé put forth a dominating performance in the women's event to strengthen her lead in the 2010 series. She was followed over the line by French teammate Magalie Pottier. Collecting the bronze medal was the 19-year-old American, Alise Post (Saint Cloud, Minn.).The third-place effort was the first Supercross World Cup podium for Post.

"I had a good start. I thought I had second place in the first turn but then somebody swooped low and I got a little pushed off the track," Post explained afterwards. "I just had to ride with it from there, run with it. I ended up with third, so I'm happy."

Following Post over the line were fellow U.S. riders Amanda Geving (Largo, Fla.) and Brooke Crain (Visalia, Calif.). Colombian Mariana Pajon and Aussie Lauren Reynolds were sixth and seventh while American Arielle Martin (Spanaway, Wash.) was eighth.

20/09 HRVfitness Setting the standard at the Eastfield Experience

HRVfitness put on a fantastic performance over the weekend at the Eastfield Experience. Saturday was all about the kids; Kamakazi was in Victoria (Australia) for the weekend and helped out at the HRVfitness Elite Racer Clinic. Around 30 riders showed up and were put through their paces. The clinic covered all aspects of racing including cornering, jumping and manualing and even gate starts. It’s a great days for riders of all ages.

Sunday was race day and all team riders were ready to get back into race mode. Jaden Rice looked strong all day coming off his recent world title win in South Africa. Jaden smashed the competition and took out wins in two classes. Brandon TeHiko was looking crazy fast, he took an early lead out of turn one and never looked back. Oliver Hoarau was looking strong, but couldn’t put it together on the day and missed out on making the main. So it was left to Kamakazi and Tony Harvey to represent in the AA class. Kama was looking strong all day and managed to win all three finals. HRV was in there too and managed to finish with a third for the day. Tom Siinmaa who also trains under HRVfitness put in a fantastic performance. After crashing in the first final Tom managed to come back and finish second over all giving HRVfitness three spots on the podium.

18/09 NBL Announces 2011 Race Schedules

National Championship Series & Challenge Championship Series Schedules Released
GAHANNA, OH — Today the 2011 NBL National Championship Series and Challenge Championship Series schedules were officially released.

The National Championship Series schedule features five Nationals in each region of the country, new categories of Nationals and a brand new Pro Series – the NBL NationsTour. Formerly the Regional Series, the Challenge Championship Series will cater to the Rookie and Challenge-level riders, but is open to all riders. The Challenge schedule features five events in each region of the country with the Challenge Championships occurring simultaneously on July 23rd in every region.

Additionally, there have been two changes made to the schedule posted on the NBL website over Labor Day weekend. The changes are as follows: The Georgia Peach Nationals originally scheduled for April 9-10, 2011 in Peachtree City, Georgia have been moved to March 19-20, 2011. Also, the Dixieland Nationals originally scheduled for May 14-15, 2011 in Morristown, Tennessee have been relocated to Nashville, Tennessee on the same weekend.

GAHANNA, OH — Today the NBL announced changes to its Team Series. Teams will race as in previous seasons with a few updates to the program. Most importantly, teams will use a new points system for scoring as follows:

Teams will be able to race at every National Championship and Challenge Series race we offer in the 2011 season. Rookies will be able to participate on Teams at the Challenge Championships. Pro Opens will be offered at every National event, and thus, Pros can be placed on a Team Sheet at those events. (Pros will need to register to join the new Pro league, but there is no membership fee. They will only pay their race entry fees at Opens or at the NationsTour events).

In addition, The National Championship Series will offer five special weekends for Teams, called Team Spectaculars, where special purses will be awarded to the top four teams in addition to the regular team purse for the day. The increased purses are as follows:

National Team: $2000 each day
1st-$900, 2nd-$600, 3rd-$300, 4th-$200

Team NBL: $1000 each day
1st-$500, 2nd-$275, 3rd-$150, 4th-$75

Year-end prizes will remain the same as in the previous season.

The regular Team purse will not slide any longer based on turnout and will be issued regardless of the number of teams as follows:

National Team:
1st-$450, 2nd-$350, 3rd-$150, 4th-$100, 5th-8th-$50

Team NBL:
1st-$250, 2nd-$150, 3rd-$75, 4th-$35, 5th-8th-$30

Teams will pay a registration fee which will cover all team sheets for a year. There will be no need to pay additional team sheet fees in the future.

National Teams:
Annual Registration Fee: $500.00

Team NBL:
Annual Registration Fee: $250.00

In addition, teams will have the opportunity and option to purchase TeamPaks which consist of Championship Level memberships for a reduced amount in groups of 5, 10, 15, or 20. This will allow teams to save money while providing incentives for their riders in the form of paid memberships. When a rider joins a team that owns a TeamPak, that rider will not have to pay membership fees to the NBL during his term with the team. This is an option, and is not a requirement for teams.

Mark Dobson was out for a bit of fun for the day and finished up with a third in the old school class.

Kyle Horton had a good day in the Pro Open class but, in the final, he was caught out wide down the first straight and couldn't get across. He was left high and dry in the first corner and settled for an eighth. You can be sure that he'll be out to prove a point this weekend at Eastfield.

17/09 Aussies at UCI Supercross Chula Vista this weekend

Only two weeks after winning the world mountain bike four cross in Canada, young Canberra rider, Caroline Buchanan, has confirmed her switch to BMX in the hope of gaining a spot at the London Olympics in 2012.

The talented 19 year old claimed back to back titles but says she will now hang up her mountain bike to give BMX her full attention.

Buchanan will compete in the third round of the BMX World Cup Supercross in Chula Vista in California this weekend along with Adelaide’s Sam Willoughby. Both riders are currently in second place in the world cup standings.

“I’ve hung the mountain bike up on the wall,” admitted Buchanan. “I’ve been on my BMX bike since just to get used to it again.”

Currently second on the world rankings in BMX, Buchanan trails. French rider, Laetitia Le Corguille. Le Corguille leads by 160 points and is aiming to reclaim the world cup series title with only two rounds remaining.

With only four world cup events this season, it will be important for Australian riders to feature in the top placings to gain valuable country points.

Buchanan admitted to feeling a bit of pressure.

“Yes the pressure is on me a bit. Nicole (Callisto) is out with injury but we have three points earners,” said Buchanan.

Western Australia’s Lauren Reynolds and Queensland’s Rachel Bracken will be the other two elite women riders aiming for a podium finish.

Buchanan said, “I really like pressure. Last year when I came here I was still learning supercross. For me it’s a perfect event. I like racing at night and this track has a good atmosphere.”

In the men’s race, Sam Willoughby from Adelaide is 34 points short of current leader, Olympic gold medallist, Maris Strombergs (LAT).

Mountain bike silver medallist, Jared Graves from Toowoomba, will also return to BMX racing this weekend in Chula Vista.

13/09 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup, next stop Chula Vista California

The third round of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup presented by Swatch will be held in Chula Vista California on 17 and 18 September 2010. After the UCI BMX World Championships and a summer break the Elite riders will meet again at the US Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista. At the moment 140 Elite men and 32 Elite women from 21 countries have signed up.

Four rounds in 2010
The Supercross World Cup series consists of four rounds in 2010. The BMX riders started the season in Madrid Spain, followed by the Copenhagen event. The world’s best BMX racers will conclude the series at the season’s finale in Frejus, France on 8 and 9 October. But first we focus on the next stop in Chula Vista, California.

Great show in the heart of BMX country
It promises to be another great show for BMX racing on Saturday evening 18 September. The challenging and exciting track at the US Olympic Training Center is a replica of the 2008 Olympic track and is located in the heart of BMX country and close to the origin of BMX racing in Southern California.

Strombergs the man to beat
Leading the 2010 World Cup Elite men ranking is Maris Strombergs. The Latvian seems the man to beat at the moment. The Olympic Champion of 2008 was recently crowned the 2010 UCI BMX World Champion in Pietermaritzburg South Africa and he will proudly wear his rainbow jersey with the big number 1 on his back in Chula Vista. A bunch of young guns are challenging Strombergs. Sam Wiloughby (AUS) is second in the World Cup ranking and is also last year’s World Cup winner and UCI BMX Junior World Champion in 2008 and 2009. Connor Fields (USA) is third in the 2010 ranking. Fields was 3rd last year in Chula Vista and 2nd at the 2010 season opener in Madrid.

Le Corguillé defends title
Laëtitia Le Corguillé (FRA) is the best Elite woman this season so far. The French rider who also won the 2009 Supercross World Cup is 160 points ahead of the multi talented Caroline Buchanan (AUS) who was recently crowned as the 2010 ‘4-cross’ MTB World Champion. Current UCI BMX World Champion Shanaze Reade (GBR) is third in the ranking. Reade will not be present in California as a result of an old injury on her wrist that needs to be looked after. Last year’s UCI BMX World Champion Sarah Walker will not be present, nursing some injuries sustained in Pietermaritzburg. Maybe this is the moment for the 2009 Junior Elite World Champion Marianna Pajon (COL) for example to grab the Chula Vista UCI BMX Supercross title.

New Speed M-Series 20 Rolling Chassis is Proven Just Plain Fast
Speed Bicycles M-Series 20" Rolling Chassis CERRITOS, CA—The Speed M-Series 20 Rolling Chassis may be the fastest BMX bike design ever offered, and not just because BMX Plus! called it the Ferrari of BMX.

It’s fast because it’s designed to ensure that more of power goes into propelling the bike forward, so racers of all levels can go down the track faster using the same or less energy as they would on a normal bike. And there is scientific test data to prove it.

When Toby Henderson, VSI’s founding manager and Speed’s chief designer, conceived of putting 20-millimeter front- and rear-axle hubs on BMX bikes, his gut told him that such a bike would bring previously unheard of performance advantages to racers.

He assumed the bikes would accelerate faster, corner like they were on rails and, most important, boost power efficiency. In other words, he thought the bikes would allow racers to make it to the finish line faster and more efficiently than ever before possible.

After Toby rode the first prototype 20-millimeter Speed bike, he was convinced his initial assumptions were right on. Out of the gate, he got to the first jump faster and he was pedaling easier. The bike also was more stable in the air and cornered better than any bike he had ridden.

George Costa from Rennen Designs But these “results” were little more than the personal sensations of an arguably biased individual. Toby knew he needed scientific test data to back up his gut. That’s when George Costa, owner of Rennen Design Group and inventor of the G-Cog, the world’s first electronic BMX power-meter, called.

George set about designing a detailed test procedure that would compare two 20-inch Speed M-Series bikes built identically with the exception of the hub axles. One bike was equipped with standard 3/8-ich axle wheels while the other had the 20-millimeter axles. In testing, world-class racers did repeated 100-foot sprints on pavement on bikes equipped with George’s G-Cog, which recorded various performance data.

Toby’s hope, of course, was that the test results would prove his theory. George, an engineer by trade, was simply curious about how the bike would perform. He also was pretty skeptical.

After George crunched the numbers, his endorsement of the Speed M-Series 20 Rolling Chassis was unequivocal. The data proved that the bikes were more efficient and provided a significant advantage over standard bikes.

“Our tests conclusively demonstrated that the Speed 20-millimeter iHub Rolling Chassis were more efficient and used less rider energy than a traditional BMX race set-up. Test results show that the Speed 20-millimeter iHub bike requires less power to achieve the same velocity as a traditional BMX race setup,” George said.

“The Speed bikes with the 20-millimeter set-up efficiently transfers the rider’s energy to the ground. Without this technology, energy is being lost in the flexing of the frame and other key components. Today, with such high level talent on the BMX circuit this technology will give riders an advantage,” he added.

At the heart of the system are the wheels, or, more precisely, the hubs. The hubs feature hollow, 20-millimeter, aluminum through-axles; massive 32-millimeter hub/dropout interfaces and smooth rolling sealed bearings. Beefy, 24-millimeter, aluminum axle nuts hold the wheels in place. In the rear, six double-pawls work with a Shimano-compatible cassette body.

The wheels’ straight-pull spoke design further boosts torsional rigidity while making stronger wheels. Straight-pull spokes are approximately 30 percent stronger than J-bend spokes and there are no hub flanges to break. Specially designed frame and fork dropouts are compatible with the monster axles.

The result: greater power transfer for faster gate starts and more-precise handling when going straight, jumping and while turning. Stomp on the pedals and the bike moves forward, straight forward, with almost no noticeable flex.

And with a bold, two-tone, Italian sports car-inspired paint job and graphics they even look fast.

The Speed Rolling Chassis includes a Speed M-Series frame, Sinz Elite Stealth Carbon forks, iHub wheels, Sinz internal headset and Sinz stem. The frames come in M 408 (Expert XL), M 520 (Pro), M 533 (Pro XL), M 546 (Pro XXL) and M 534 (24” Pro Cruiser) sizes. The numeric names represent the length of the top tube in millimeters.

10/09 Troy Lee Designs 2011 D3 Helmets

Since shattering my old trusty Answer ACF helmet in a heavy fall at the Australian Championships a few months back I have been searching high and low for a helmet that fits my apparently oversized head (I'm sure it's just still swollen from the impact... or something like that). It's amazing how many great brands there are out there with awesome helmets and awesome designs but unfortunatly they cater for the masses, not the massive.

I was checking out the 2010 Troy Lee Desings helmets and noticed the bike specific D3, which I had heard about but not payed too much attention to. More specifically it was the Sam Hill signature helmet that caught my eye, I have a thing for skulls, it's unfortunate not all helmet manufacturers are as passionate about them as I am. It was when I started to look into the specs and features of the D3 that I noticed they have an XXL size. I do know a couple of other people who have told me they have the same abundance of brain storage as I do and they both use TLD helmets. So I thought I must be on to something here.

We'll step back in time for a moment. A while ago, actually it was a few years ago now, I saw that 661 had a XXL large size helmet that would have been great but the importer, at the time, didn't bring that size into the country. Apparently the general population in Australia aren't as well endowed as myself, and maybe a select few others. So I looked into the D3's and the full range is brought into Australia in all sizes. Thank you, thank you, thank you Steve Cramer Products. Now it's just a matter of time until the 2011 designs will be in the country and I can finally replace my old brain bucket, ok so it's more like a brain mini skip...anyways...here's the 2011 designs for you to check out.

10/09 Morphine Industries Gets Down in the Bluegrass State for the NBL Grands

There is one thing that is comes to mind when the first week on September rolls around – the NBL Grands baby! Time to saddle up the rig and round the crew for some good ole fun in the sun and dirt at Tom Sawyer State Park.

We rolled into Louisville Wednesday morning to stake our terra claim next to Haro Bikes on the main thoroughfare of Manufacturer row. Come on Jason, come clean, bro, how did the sky light get ripped off the roof of the trailer?

The weekend began with practice on Thursday and Friday. But hey, come on, if you can’t ride by now a little extra practice ain’t going to do much good other than loosen up the legs and give you time to show off or blow up.

The race schedule was a Friday night US open, Saturday and Sunday for Amateurs and a Saturday night spectacular for the Pro classes and a 16-29 money open.

MASTERS – Tim Dinger came out swinging Saturday night with a moto win right off the bat. He quickly followed up with a repeat performance to set the stage for a transfer to the main. The main was a drag race to the first turn with Dinger getting tapped coming out of turn. Keeping it upright and charging to the finish he took a solid third place.

ELITE – Mike Kapes gave the pink, black and white a solid rep all weekend. Kapes lined up at the gate for the Friday Pro Open to start off the weekend assault. He impressed with a solid 1-1-3 in the motos. Main time brought about a line 8 start and a hard charge down the first straight. Mike crossed the line just off the podium with 4th.

Saturday night was complete to see Mike back on the gate at the NBL Grands. He was there to make his presence with a spot on the main gate. Mike posted a solid performance with smart riding for a 3-3-2. Making through quarters, he had command of the semi until the last jump of the pro set. He was forced to check up on the landing hitting Upshaw’s wheel and coming unclipped to save a crash.

SUPER X – Jason LaRev started his weekend with a solid performance in the Friday Pro Open but narrowly missed the main. He returned for a shot at Super X glory on Saturday night. He pounded his first moto with a 1st and finished with a 2nd and 3rd place moto finishes. Unfortunately getting boogered up in the first turn cost LaRev a spot at the gate for the main.

19-25X – Olijuwon Davis showed up the weekend to set the class straight with some Rockford roll. OD hit the 16-29 Open Saturday night with a 1-1-2 in motos and finishing in third for an impressive showing. In Class, he took control as well with a string of unos in motos. Getting a lane 8 pick in the main made OD have to put on the afterburners to take a 3rd in the main.

17-18X - Tanner Sebesta Morphine Industries’ newest addition turned some serious heads all weekend. Tanner started with a blazin’ performance at the 16-29 Open on Saturday night. Tanner took the top podium spot along with the money beating a loaded class of riders.

Riding class was all about laying down the same. Tanner rolled through the motos posting 1s. Main time was going to bring the same result until he got submarined in the second turn and lost momentum settling for a 2nd place finish.

15X – Damian Cherepko came to let everyone know that he was still the top of the class. And, well, that is what he did. Damian made the scorekeeper’s job easy all weekend by posting nothing but 1-1-1-1-1-1. Damian took home the top spot on the podium as well as a repeat for the #1 National Title.

13X - Noah Reeves came to derby city battling for the national title. He started the weekend posting unos in the motos and cruising through quarters and semis. The main brought about a lane 3 spot at the gate but a last minute repost stuck him out in lane 8. Getting a good gate snap brought him into the first turn railing the white line. However, it was not enough to get through the stack of riders coming out of the turn. Noah settled for a 5th in the main. Noah finished the year with a #2 National spot.

11X – Richie Dey showed up to chase down the national title as well sitting in second at the beginning of the weekend. Richie started the weekend with a main win in the 11-12 open on Friday night. Saturday was time for business and Richie started with a cruise through motos , quarters and semis to get to the main. Richie charged the main with his typical style and power taking a second at the white line and a National #2 finish.

10/09 One Bicycles Australia at Liverpool Open

The ONE Team travelled to Sydney to contest the Liverpool Open. The Club has recently done some changes to the track and increased the size of the first berm to accommodate closer more competitive racing. The weather leading up to the event was wet to say the least. On the day Sydney was experiencing 60 to 90 km/h winds which made for some interesting racing. The ONE Team sat on the grassed area on the first straight together to minimise the mud on tyres and shoes. The track was a little spongy but the club had done an incredible job considering the weather leading in to the event.

This event offered a “Krank It Challenge” which combined riders in the 11 to 13 year class to race head to head for additional prize money. Nik and Justin threw their hats in the ring and wanted a slice of the prize money. A number of riders came from the central region of NSW to be involved in the event. This was going to be a great opportunity to mix it up with some great riders in that age group.

As their weren’t the numbers to make a class, Mikayla Rose and Club local Bianca Robertson raced the 11 year class making for some tougher racing for the girls. Mikayla came to the event unwell, but didn’t make excuses and was determined to give the older girls a run for their money! She came out in moto 1 and rode hard with a shocking head wind in to the second and last straights. Mikayla managed a close second to 11 year old Stephanie Gioffre. Commentators were saying she may give W1 Saya Sakakibara a run for her money at the upcoming NSW Titles. That will be worth watching, as Saya is a class leader and usually races the boys for competition. In the next Moto Mikayla came out of the gate in front only to unclip and fall behind the pack of riders to be in last by 10 meters. She clipped back in and took off like a person possessed. She caught the pack in the second straight and headed in to the third straight in third behind Stephanie and Bianca. That’s how they finished! In the next moto Mikayla went low in the first corner to hit the second straight in first only to be overtaken by a bigger and stronger Stephanie. Once again Mikayla finished second. In the Final she went out fast and gave Stephanie a run all the way to the line with Bianca coming in third. A great day of tough competition and exactly what she needs coming in to the State Titles. Mikayla is hoping to make it back to back State Champion this year and is training hard to accomplish this goal.

Nikalus Rose had some tough competition in his age class with last year’s W1 and current 1A Andy Hughes and 8A Brock Griffiths. 8A is not a true indicator of Brock’s talent as he had an accident in the Aussie Final! Along with locals Brody Moore and Ben Bainy and Southlake’s Tommy Dallinger this was going to be a tough class. Add current 1A in 11 boys and team mate Justin Beattie and you have one hot age group for 12 Boys. Nik managed to draw Justin in the first moto and the two went out hard, with Nik having a great race to take the win from the hard charging Justin. Justin had changed his gearing to a lighter roll out after seeing a wet and soggy track the day before. The lighter gear did not suit Justin and he struggled to haul in his Team mate Nik. In the next two motos, the boys rode well with second and third places each. Nik was on fire and riding hard, he was out to beat Brock after some close racing at the prior event at Macarthur. Both Justin and Nik made it to the Finals in 12 Boys and looked like a stacked gate for the finisher. Nik came out strong and was side by side with Brock in to the first corner and both of them were behind Andy and just in front of Justin. The four riders battled hard in the final with Andy taking the win, Brock in second, Nik in third and Justin in Fourth. Some great racing in the class and Justin did himself proud mixing it up with the older riders and on a gearing he wasn’t happy with all day. This kid has some power and skill and will be hard to beat at the upcoming NSW Titles. Nik is hoping to make the podium at the State Titles, something he didn’t manage last year after a number of big accidents, bring home 4N.

Joshua Rose had Kyle Hughes, Blake Moore, Chad Harlow, Brett Parkinson, Matthew Sweeny and a few ACT riders to contend with in 15 Boys. This was going to be a tough Class, with Australian Plate holders everywhere in the field. Josh rode extremely well in the heats managing to make the top four every moto. He has been training hard and building strength and was inspired after getting a new set of wheels built for him through the week. He hadn’t ridden on the new wheels and took a little time in the warm up to get the feel of them. Josh said in his own words, that he didn’t feel comfortable on the bike all day, but his riding didn’t show that. Josh made it to a stacked final. The riders came out in the final blasting down the first straight in a bunch, when they all got in to the first corner, Chad had dropped a pedal and that allowed Josh a slight advantage. Chad regained his pedal and took off and battled with Josh all the way to the line. Kyle Hughes wins it from, Moore, Parkinson, Sweeney, with Josh in fifth and Chad in sixth followed by Kennedy and Belfield. What a great warm up to the State Titles. Josh is hoping to make the final this year at the State Titles but knows he needs to keep up the hard training to have a chance.

Krank It Challenge

Both Nik and Justin had some tough competition with Justin racing riders two years his elder and Nik a year. There were some good riders out to have a go at the cash. Nik and Justin did what they needed to do by muscling up against the bigger and older riders and both managed to make the final. An amazing result, considering the depth of talent in the NSW area in that age group. Due to Nik unclipping in one heat and coming in sixth, winning one heat and second in the other gave him an outside gate for the final. The riders came out fast and were in a pack in the first corner looking for the hole to take an advantage. After some brilliant racing and when the dust settled, Andy Hughes took a close win over Gage Harland, Todd McDonald, Mitchell Chaston, Nik in fifth, followed by Brock Griffiths, Justin in for a tight seventh and Brody Moore taking the final spot. What a great final to watch! A great concept by the Club and a good opportunity for the younger guys and girls to see some tough competition. Well done to Nik and Justin for stepping up and giving some 13 year olds something to think about.

I would like to thank Wayne Hughes for getting the Team a great grassy tent spot on the first straight and his ongoing friendship, also for an amazing BBQ the night before. If you haven’t tried deer before, go out and get some for your next BBQ. My lovely wife Kaylene for her support at events with the kids now, my beautiful daughter Bianka for filming the racing when I had to work and Grandma and Grandad for bringing Justin to the event and their ongoing support and passion for the Team!

Big thanks to Shane Jenkins for his ongoing support and management of the Team and to the guys at ECI who provide the Team with amazing parts and the best frames on the market in ONE, to race on. The Team is now in preparation for the upcoming NSW State Titles in Tamworth. The Team is hoping to take away the Corporate Team’s trophy for the second year and will be training hard to make it possible. Justin is hoping to make it as State Champion again this year as is Mikayla and Nik is aiming for podium on both bikes. Josh is hoping to get his first State plate this year and a great way to cap off a year where he has got his first Regional Champions Jersey. Keep you all posted. National BMX Hall Of Fame 2010 Inductees Announced

Pioneer BMX Racer - Tim Judge
TJ was one of the top stars on the East Coast in the mid 1970s. His fame expanded exponentially after winning the 1981 Jag World Champion title and getting picked up by the legendary Hutch BMX Factory Team. At Hutch, he added a 1983 IBMXF Cruiser World Title to his list of accomplishments. Tim`s BMX experience played a pivotal role in his post-BMX career, when he became an internationally-known racer and mechanic in the Jet Watercraft (JetSki) industry.

BMX Racer - Steve Veltman
The first rider to win the ABA National Number One Amateur and Cruiser titles in the same year (1982), Steve Veltman also stacked up two Jag World Championship Age Group titles, and two IBMXF world age group titles in his amateur career, and was an Elite Cruiser Bronze Medalist at the 1989 World Championships. As a professional, Steve won both the NBL and ABA Grandnationals, and the 1993 ABA National Number One Pro title. He competed in three X Games and raced in the top class for 15 years, retiring in 2004. Steve is the only BMX racer to have ever appeared on a Wheaties cereal box.

BMX Industry - Craig "gOrk" Barrette
Few industries have a person so well known and respected that one name suffices in identifying them. In BMX, it`s "gOrk." As someone who has raced at a national level (UBR national number one sidehack three year running), rode and promoted freestyle shows, worked in the warehouse at CW Racing, and served as editor of both the iconic "BMX Action" and the ABA`s BMXer Magazines, he has made his mark on nearly every era of our sport. In 1999, after 10 years with ABA, gOrk moved to the Pacific Northwest to join Seattle Bike Supply as the Director of Marketing for their flagship brand, Redline. He remains in that role today.

BMX Freestyler - Woody Itson
Most people had their first exposure to Woody Itson in BMX Action`s "Hot Shots" feature, as he blasted an impossibly high air at the Big O Skatepark. This racer-turned-freestyler wowed crowds all over the nation on tour for Vans Tennis Shoes, but it was his riding for Hutch BMX Products that made him a household name. He designed the Hutch Trick Star, one of the most popular bikes of the day, and captured both an AFA and an NFA National Title for Flatland in 1985 ands 1986, respectively. As half of the Diamond Back Freestyle Team, he was "Mr. Flatland" to the "Mr. Air" of Mike Dominguez. After a break to attend college, Woody hung up his riding uniform, and became Freestyle Program Director for the megawatt GT Freestyle Team, where he stayed until 2001. Soon after, he started his current company, Satellite Sports Group, and has since been managing a crew of riders who perform BMX Freestyle shows at over 500 venues each year.

Special Recognition - Linda Dorsey
In honoring someone for whom the sharpest wit and cleverest turn of phrase was as natural as green on grass, words are difficult to wrangle when talking about legendary announcer, Linda Dorsey. Her son, Bryan, probably summed it up as well as any of us could, saying, simply, "BMX was her life." During her three-decades on the mic, Linda was a fixture on the NBL National circuit, served on the NBL Board of Directors, and brought her voice to France and Japan, among other places motos were posted. Linda passed away from cancer in 2008, but announced BMX races with the same fire and passion until three months before the end of her life.

Special Recognition - Al Fritz, father of the Schwinn Sting-Ray
Starting on the welding line of Schwinn`s landmark Kostner Avenue plant in Chicago, Al Fritz worked his way up from the factory floor in 1945, to become the number two man and a member of the Board of Directors at Schwinn Bicycle Company. During a chance Saturday phone call in 1963, a West Coast sales rep told him of a "goofy" fad out there, where kids were "buying used 20" bikes and equipping them with Texas Longhorn handlebars." That Saturday morning phone call planted the seed for a project Mr. Fritz would rapidly prototype, and ultimately launch as the Schwinn Sting-Ray. Every BMX bike on today`s track and trails can trace its roots directly to that first Sting-Ray, built by Al Fritz in the winter of 1963.

The National BMX Hall Of Fame, founded in 1985 as the "ABA BMX Hall of Fame," has established a mission to further the sport of BMX by helping future generations remember the champions, heroes and thought-leaders who shaped the sport over its history. 07/09 Maris Strombergs Wins NBL Title and More

This past weekend Maris Strombergs not only won the NBL Grand National Race but also took the NBL Title in the process for the 2nd year in a row. This is Strombergs' 2nd major title for 2010 after also winning the World Championships in South Africa last month.

While Maris' competition was warming up for the race, he spent over 2 hours talking with fans, taking pictures and signing autographs. When Maris arrived on the gate for the race, everything clicked into place and he not only won every qualifier but secured the NBL Title by winning the main event.

Maris' attention is now focused on the Chula Vista UCI World Cup later this month and then looks forward to the end of Season ABA Title chase.

07/09 Sunbury Open Meeting this Sunday

The Sunbury BMX Club made the decision to postpone last Sundays "Sunbury Open" due to the severe weather warnings for Victoria with high rainfall and high winds.

The race meeting will be postponed until the 12th of September. All entries will be carried over. Riders who cannot attend the 12th of September will be refunded.

There wasn't a lot of local racing going on with heavy rainfalls all over Victoria but Aussie BMXers were representing all over the world.

At the World Mountain Bike Championships in Canada yesterday Caroline Buchanan won her second consecutive 4X World Championship. Jared Graves is more of a Mountain Biker than a BMXer but since he represented Australia in BMX racing at the Olympics we'll claim him. Jared followed up his 4X world championship win last with a second this year. For BMXers with a keen eye you may recognise some other international BMXers in the finals.

The ABA hosted a couple of Pro UCI series races at the Black Jack nationals in Reno Nevada. Aussies Sam Willoughby and Khalen Young were getting amongst the action, as was Kiwi Marc Willers. On Saturday Willers got third, Willoughby fifth and Young eighth. On Sunday Young pulled a third and Willers got fourth.

03/09 Sunbury Open Race Meeting Sunday 5th September postponed

The Sunbury BMX Club advise that, due to adverse weather conditions (the Bureau of Meteorology has issued severe flood warnings) the Sunbury Open meeting set for this Sunday 5th September 2010 has been postponed.

The Club intend to run the meeting on the following Sunday, 12th September.

They will issue further advice during the week.

The 2011 poster for the event has been finalised. It features Luke Madill (left) who won the event in 2006 and 2007 and Josh Callan (right) who won in 2008 and 2010.

We plan to do some extra marketing and use images of Simon Anderson (four times 30 & Over winner) and Ziggy Callan (fastest female on the track many times) who are also very much a part of the event.

As we add partners the supported by area will be updated. So if you are interested in being a part of a very unique event and becoming a partner read the partner opportunities section below.

Go ahead and print it out and put it on your fridge, put it in your bmx club newsletter, put it on your facebook page, whatever, just spread the word.

Riders
If you are interested in the event drop us an email webmaster@bmxultra.com to help us determine how many riders to expect.

We need to know:

what class you would like to ride
- Open men
- Open women
- 30 & Over Open wheel
where you are from (City & State)
and your name.

Generally we end up with 32+ riders in the Open mens class, about 12 in the 30 & Over open wheel and 2-4 Open women. But there is plenty of room for more.

Horton and Carey in the AA Pro main at the GV Classic in Shepparton
A bunch of the team bmxultra.com riders hit up the Shepparton track on the weekend for the GV Classic. The Shepparton Club is very track proud and the track was in the same awesome condition that it was in when the Australian Championships were held there earlier this year. Despite about 8 weeks of solid rain leading up to the event the track was very smooth, fast and dry. And during the coldest and wettest part of the year it was a nice overcast 18°C on the day, prefect for racing.

Kyle Horton (AA Pro) was coming off two podiums from his first two races in bmxultra.com/One colours and was looking to keep that streak alive at Shepparton. While things didn't quite go to plan Kyle still did a great job to keep his bike upright in the main when he got caught up with another rider who went down over the first jump. Kyle made up a bit of ground and finished a respectable fifth.

Adam Carey (AA Pro) has been improving with his time in NSW against some stiff competition but was struggling with the gate a little and playing catch up but he was keeping Kyle Horton honest in the motos. When the gate dropped in the main Adam was left to play catch up again but was caught up behind the fallen rider on the first jump. Adam managed to come home in sixth.

Brandan Bullows (A Pro) is still a little rusty after spending some time off the race track but has had some success at Shepparton in the past. Brandan was slow out of the gate but did a great job to make his way through the field, it was a few mistakes that cost him from progressing out of the motos.

Chase Collins (A Pro) was looking good in the first moto, but mistakes in the second and again in the third meant that he would have to watch the final from the sideline. With a little more consistancy Chase will be making it to podium in no time.

Mark Dobson (40+ Cruiser) was dominant at Shepparton, his mountain bike fitness was too much for his competition. Mark took the clean sweep of his motos and finishing with a first place for the day.

Jamie Bullows (19-39 Cruiser) seems to have regained his spark and was improving as the day went on. Jamie finished in third but you can put money on it that he has first place in his sights for next time.

Shane Jenkins (30-39 Men) raced for the first time since a big crash at the National Championships a few months ago. Shane was happy with a third, but there's lots of room for improvement as he works on getting fitter and stronger.

The bmxultra.com crew look forward to more racing at the Shepparton track especially the 2011 Victorian Championships. Thanks a bunch to the team who put on the awesome event.
