About BSX
BSX is short for Bicycle Supercross. We pair up some
of Australia's best pro BMXers on a 2 man track, much like Stumpy's
DC sprint trails, in a one on one elimination style race until
we find a winner. It's a BMX event like none other in the country.
The riders are challenged on a short technical track while having
a whole lot of fun and at the same time putting on a show for
the spectators. The event created an atmosphere that's too hard
to put into words and must be experienced. Last year Luke Madill
took the win, can he come back from spinal injuries and take it
again?
Next year the event will be held at Kinglake West, Victoria (just an hour north of Melbourne) on Monday January 22. It's the day after the UCI Pacific Oceania round at Knox (during the Track Attack series).

The Northern Park Open was set to put on a good day of racing
on Sunday October 22nd. The track was fast and the weather was
perfect. The number of entries were low, but was well supported
by the older classes.
It was surprising to see Tony Harvey and Ben Price in the 15 rider strong 14 & Over money open field, but it was great to see these guys supporting Northern Park.
The experimental 30 & Over Open wheel money class attracted a lot of interest but only 9 entries. With a number of riders out ill we should see that class continue to grow.
In the 14 & Over Open main Harvey got a slower start than the likes of Price and Ash McCutcheon but managed to power his way to the front. It was a close battle between Harvey and Price all the way to the finish line. Harvey winning by about half a length. Ash McCutcheon was in close third. A couple of lengths behind him was Connor Hunter and then the rest of the field.

Kerrod Connors (Nerang BMX Club - South Qld) was Captain of the
Australian Mighty 11 test team. A fantastic team effort saw the
boys win by 1 point.
Kerrod also was highest point scorer for the team. Well done to
all who competed, and congrats to Kerrod and the Aussie Team.
"...Mighty 11’s.
By Kerrod Connors (Aust. Captain Mighty 11's 2006)
Mighty 11’s was a great experience. Along with team mates
Kyle Hughes, Jack Buckhorn, Chad Harlow and Luke Parker, and girls
team members Nicole Rankin and Charlie Webb, we had an amazing
week and a fantastic race meet.
During the week we got to know each other and went boating, go karting, ten pin bowling and climbed Mt Taranaki. The snow was freezing and we managed to ambush our parents with snow balls. The team visited a local school where we were asked questions. We also visited a great museum. We did manage to fit in training each day with coach Frank Penrose.
First day of racing was fun, but wet, muddy and freezingly cold (for a Gold Coast boy). We raced well as a team and were 15 points ahead at the end of the day. The second day was better because bark had been laid over the mud around the track. Despite the rain the track was concrete smooth. The Kiwi team stepped up the challenge and we were only 4 points ahead going into the last race. The New Zealanders raced hard, but we managed to snatch an overall win by 1 point and bring the trophy home again.
The best part was getting together with the Kiwi boys and girls after racing, having fun swapping race jerseys, signing each others plates and generally just making friends.
Thanks to BMX NSW, BMX NZ, manager Robyn Behan and coach Frank Penrose, our NZ billet families from both New Plymouth and Sun Coast, and also to all the families who looked after us, especially the Hobbs family for letting us, the senior boys and our parents take over their house for a few hours on the last night..."

With the Battery BSX2007 less than 3 months away I have a
lot of work to do on the backyard track until I will be happy
with it. Any spare time I have will be spent working on the track,
I woke up at 6:30am this morning to find that it had been snowing.
That's right snowing! In late October, which is spring to us for
you guys in the northern hemisphere that were wondering why I
am making such a big deal over it. It's been shorts weather, and
it hasn't even snowed here during winter. Anyway I guess I will
have to hope the sun makes an appearance today otherwise I've
lost a whole day of work.
Phirebird press release by Glenn Codega (Team owner)
I'm excited to announce that my team and I are VERY close to completing
a project that has been many years in the making and I wanted
to give the bmx community an advance warning!
TPB are about to embark on journey and write a whole new chapter in bmx history, and I do not say this lightly! We have spent many moons searching for best people we could find in their fields to bring this together because we were never going to be satisfied releasing something we weren’t happy with ourselves. Phase #1 is about to be released to the cycling world and we are very excited!
When I look back on this, I have literally been working on this for years now, and having had the chance to observe the various members of our sport has given me even better perspectives of what it takes to achieve. All I can say for now is that ‘Phase #1’ is consistent with TPB as you all know it - we don’t compete, we set the standard!
Stay very tuned because you will here more about this in the coming days, yes days, so keep the eyes wide open and you hand firmly glued to the mouse!
And, as always, thanks for supporting our vision, we can’t wait to share more with you!

Shane Jenkins was the only active member of the bmxultra.com
team on the weekend, hitting up his home track at the Northern
Park Open. With some consistant finishes in the 30 & Over
Open Wheel money class motos Shane qualified second for the main
and was looking good for a top 3 finish until it all went wrong
for him in the rhythm section. Sitting in third on the tail of
John Barford who was second to Trevor Stamford, Barford messed
up a roller, lost speed and nearly stopped Shane dead in his tracks,
allowing the rest of the field to catch up. Shane fell victim
to the wide open last corner and had to settle for 7th place.
The bmxultra.com team is proudly supported by One Bicycles, Supercross BMX, Answer BMX, Dirt Designs, ATi grips, and Tektro brakes.

Hi
ultra dudes. I'm a long time reader, first time emailer. I too
went to the bike show in Melbourne and didn't see much race bmx.
I did see most of the stands and I was able to get a couple of pics of the Hillbrick Pro bike as the guys where packing up on the last day. This thing is hot. Great spec and shape. Very good finish also. Being an old track rider I know who Hillbrick is.
The guys from Sydney told me these bikes where designed here in Oz. An Australian bmx. That must be a good thing?

With just under 3 months to go until the Battery BSX2007, momentum
is building. The track is slowly being transformed into something
a little different to what people saw and rode January this year.
Berms are bigger, jumps are bigger and so are the lips, overall
the track should be a whole lot faster despite adding an extra
straight.
Rider list so far
We have three classes at BSX2007; the pro open men, pro
open women and 30 & over open wheel. Although people are a
little slower to put their names down this time around, we expect

the BSX next year please send us an email to webmaster@bmxultra.com
so we know to expect you. You can pay your entry during the Track
Attack rounds leading up to the event or even on the day, but

Once again it rained at Labour Weekend in New Zealand for the
North Island Titles at the New Plymouth BMX Club (Taranaki). The

of the weekend.
The buzz is that the track was awesome which is a credit to the hard working folk at the club, it’s just a shame the NZ spring weather turned out to be the villain in this story!

One of Australia's most talented female BMXers, Renee Junga, has
been seriously injured in a mountain bike accident. Renee has
travelled to Victoria many times to put on a display of the style
of racing that saw her earn the #2 World title in the senior elite
womens class in Paris, France in 2005. Now it's time for Victoria's
riders to show their appreciation for what Renee has done for
BMX.
I personally found Renee one of the most exciting pros to watch in Australian BMX male or female. She was never the strongest rider but always the most determined and skilled in her class, which saw her take many wins through her racing career. I will never forget the day at the Lilydale round of Track Attack in January this year. Renee was more keen than anyone to enter the BSX backyard race. She asked me "If there are no girls there can I race against the guys? I just want to race it." On the day of BSX, after a couple of crashes during practice, she decided that she would be better off helping us video tape the event. You could see that she was dissapointed to have to sit out and watch, but she did watch every minute. There are few pros with her enthusiasm. If there is anyone who can exceed specialists expectations in their recovery from such severe spinal injuries it will be Renee Junga. She was and always will be an inspiration to me.
A Renee Junga benefit night is planned for Victoria's metro riders on Friday 17th Nov.
Click here for the flyer for the Renee Junga benefit night race planned for Friday 17th Nov at Knox BMX Club.
If you can't make it on the night there are ways you can make donations or other contributions.

The SE Bikes 2006 Open Victorian State Championships Organising
committee has decided to take the proposed first straight sprint
off the program. The format requires some fine tuning.and it would

Victoria's and some of Australia's fastest riders battling out

After giving it some serious thought I came to a decision
to call it a day racing AA/ Elite in BMX. I have just turned 35
and it's time for a change and some new motivations and challenges.
Free Agent / KHS, my family and close friends are fully supporting
me on my plans and for 07 I'm going to give 4x Mountainbiking
more of a push, something I've always wanted to do without the
BMX distraction. The sport of 4x suits more of my age group and
it's not as hectic as BMX, so it should suit me fine. Alongside
racing MTB for KHS I'm going to be working more on Team management
with Free Agent, among other Free Agent/ KHS duties. I feel I
have pretty much reached all my goals in BMX and had a great time
along the way, and even though I'm not racing I'll still be around
as BMX is still in my heart and I'm as passionate about it now
as I always have been since the day I began 25 years ago. It will
be cool to just be a fan instead of a racer. I'm excited about
the future.
by Shane Jenkins/bmxultra.com
A week ago I hit up the Bicycling Australia Bike Show at
the Exhibition Buildings just outside of Melbourne's CBD. In the
past there has been not a great deal of BMX race specific stuff
on display, I guess it's more for mass consumers and the industry
tend to push street bikes and dirt jumpers on to the general public.
I guess they think they are stronger and more versatile, and for
some reason kids tent to have a fascination with foot pegs, even
if they never plan to use them. What suprises me is the number
of kids that show up on these bikes at public race tracks. Has
the industry misread what the public really want or need and is
BMX racing suffering because of it? Enough about my thoughts of
the bicycle industries impact on racing.
One of the "go to" stands for BMX racing products in the past was Elite Cycle Imports but with them having run a road show earlier in the year they pulled the pin on the bike show. There wasn't a lot of race specific product on display.
First stop was the Norco Australia booth. Those guys haven't
really done much on the BMX side of things since Luke Madill was
picked up by GT, but they have some awesome motorcross influenced
mountain bike helmets from SixSixOne and Mace that would certainly
do the job on a BMX track and were carbon fiber, super light and
a price range well worth looking in to.
Next stop was Advanced Traders, importers of brands like DK, Answer and Drive, just to name a few. Those guys had one of the biggest stands in the show, but no race bikes on display, which is not surprising given the amount of product they had on display I guess they had to make a cut somewhere. Since I have been working with Answer BMX promoting their products in Australia for about 7 years now I thought I had better take a look at what the new Answer/Drive importer were bringing in to the country. It seems that it's going to be the whole product range and it looks like it's going to be a whole lot easier to get hold of than it was in the past. Ok the bling bling Answer Ti hubs and wheelsets are going to be expensive, they are the ultimate lightweight wheel set and hub which we all know doesn't come cheap, but the prices of everything else will be cheaper than I remember. I would have taken photos, but they would have been of the same products we took photos of on the US trip in Aug/Sept. These guys are big supporters of BMX racing, with the naming rights sponsor of TrackAttack in 2007 and they have a couple of promotional campaigns running with BMXAustralia to boost participation.
I
am a big fan of the old school SE and was very critical of the
new SE's product range when they first came back on to the market,
but with Todd Lyons at the helm they seem to be getting it together.
They have gone retro with the 26 inch OM Flyer, even as far as
putting blue comp 3 style tyres on it. Their race frames are now
the silver and baby blue giving them a much slicker look. I was
interested to check out the new Quadangle Team and loop tail replica
but neither made it in time for the show. Both will be limited
stock when they do make it to Australia, so you will want to be
quick and preorder one if you are in the market. Check out www.sebmx.com.au
to find a dealer near you.
Shannon Rademaker of Free Agent dragged me across to check out
the two piece Shimano DXR cranks that we have been hearing so
much about over the past 6 or so months. There will be a whole
DXR group set available for BMX racing including brakes, cranks
and hubs. The jury is still out with me and DXR, they look slick,
but I think that this must be the 4th or 5th time that Shimano
have had a go at BMX with a DX product range and each time it
just fades away to nothing and vanishes for a couple of years.
Time will tell how popular these will be, and maybe it's just
the fact that I run 185mm cranks and DXR are 175 or 180 so they
don't interest me personally.
I was in a rush to get around the show, but it didn't take long to see everything, or so I had thought. In my rush I found out that I missed other stands with BMX racing product including Hillbrick and Felt. So there you have it. The 2006 Bike Show. I hope that Bicycling Australia can do something to pull all the distributors together in the future the show was nearly half the size it was last time it was in Melbourne.

bmxultra.com press release
It was a quiet weekend for most of the bmxultra.com crew,
our AA Pro's Levi Collins and Adam Carey the only riders racing
over the weekend. They hit up Shepparton's Central GV Classic.
It was Tony Harvey who took the clean sweep of the motos and was
looking the goods for the main. Levi was the second qualifier
and Adam fourth.
When the gate dropped in the main Harvey unclipped allowing the
faster guys to get a big jump on him. Levi took the win on his
home track with Robert Slatter finishing in second, just ahead
of Adam in third while Harvey had to settle for fourth.

is just getting underway with the North Island Titles this weekend.
Racing aside, there has been plenty going on over the past few
weeks & so here now is a “speed update”…
Sirius Bicycles will again be offering Hyper Bicycles frames to racers downunder. World No. 3, Adam Shields has signed on to ride a Hyper. Keep your eyes & ears open as more riders are added to the new team. Steven Janssen is on one of the 2007 Supercross Evo IS series frames… & rockin’ it. Joining him will be AUS No. 1, Chelsea King. Supercross have been busy developing some great new products for 2007. In addition to your tried & true favourites such as the Spindrive Hubs & Pro Lite Forks, there is also some really cool new stuff including a stem, 2-pc cranks, 4-bolt chainrings, & saddles. There are now also more sizes available in Blue Streak Tires, a Spindrive Wheelset, & the all-new Ascension (frame) for when you’re done racing & you want to hit the trails! Due to unforeseen circumstances Revtec will not be producing any bikes for 2007. This is a real shame as the Revtec is one of the finest frames on the market. Good luck Greg, I hope we will see all new Revtec frames soon. The good folks at Ciari Parts have been very busy also & their parts range is now looking really impressive. Look for the ad in the next issue of XBR. The Transit crew has also been busy & the buzz is that TR8 will be out in time for Xmas. If you’re looking for stocking fillers then the Transit How to Race DVD would make an ideal gift for the BMXicans in your household? For those of you in the South QLD area come on down to the race for Renee Junga at Centenary Plains on Nov 11 & try out the new BMXtronic GTR gate.
Well that’s about it for now save to say good luck to all those riders racing at the North Island Titles in New Zealand.

Around 18 months ago we compared some of the leading race forks
in the market, a lot has happened with forks in that time, so
we thought it was time for an update. We found 7 sets of forks
at or under 1kg (37oz) there are a lot of other forks in the market,
but weight is one of the major factors when riders make their
choice.
This very basic shootout allows you to compare price and weight.
Prices are in Australian dollars. Our international readers will
have to check with their local publications and bike shops for
prices.
(All information is based on 1 1/8" threadless 20 inch pro
size forks). Please note the Australian distributor is listed
for the convenience of Australian riders please check the websites
or ask your local bike shop to contact the distributors for further

I am constantly reminded of the words of the lead singer of Disturbed
in a live recording I have "You can conquer anything my brothers
and sisters". It's almost a form of motivation for me. When
I decided to go ahead and run a charity event in the backyard,
BSX - the one on one sprint trails style race, I was told by a
bunch of people that I couldn't do it for various reason. All
it managed to do was add fuel to the fire it gave me more purpose
and became the driving force for the event. Especially when BMX
Australia sent a letter to riders and myself stating that the
event was not going to be insured under them. Well the insurance
cover that I did get was better than anything they offer anyway.
Anyway the event was a big success despite it being something
very different to BMX as we know it.
BMX gets caught in a cultural rut. Things just seem to work so people just keep things going the same way, despite the fact that things are changing elsewhere. Let me explain. Let's take age classes in Australia for example. When I first started racing BMX over 25 years ago cruisers weren't that popular, in fact there was only one cruiser class. It was open. Then a couple of younger people started to race in the open and were getting their tails kicked, so they broke up the class into age divisions. I think it might have been 15 & under and 16 & over open, the classes continued to grow and divide. It seems that at some point there was such a healthy number of cruiser riders that there was a Pro cruiser class nearly every weekend.
Things have changed numbers aren't so great in Australia, the only time we see pro cruiser now is at title events, and the age classes are lucky to attract enough riders to make up a full gate. Culturally we would just continue to race those classes despite the numbers and hope that one day the riders will come back again. Now there are other options here, we could combine the classes again, change the divisions and get healthy numbers increasing competition levels or we could change the way we have been racing in Australia since day dot. I personally think there are too many classes but worry if you combine them you might lose people because of it. So how do we make racing more exciting? Why not consider still having a final for those riders. Make them work hard in the motos. If there's less than a gate in a class, drop the rider who qualified last and put the rest in a main. How would this make a difference? I will put a little excitement and competition back into the classes for example. People might actually think now that looks like fun and have a try instead of thinking, "I have to race every moto as if it's the final I might just stick with 20 inch".
And while we are talking about culture there is a tendancy to run 4 qualifying motos in Victoria instead of 3 to give riders more value for money. The thing is we compete against other sports that might last 45 to 90 minutes, and a Victorian race, even a small one might take 4 hours. The value for money thing doesn't sit well with me and if you look at it, it could be the reason why a lot of people don't race regularly. Wouldn't you like to go to a summer race meeting that starts early in the morning, is done before it get's hot then hit the beach or the local swimming spot?
There's always the two day meetings too, where's the rule that says you have to run 1 meeting over 2 days? Why not race two meetings? People wll have 2 chances at making the mains, and people might be only able to make one of the two days. Everything is set up for 2 days anyway, why not run 2 race meetings?
Why is there a National series for only the Elite and 14-16 classes? Why not make it for all classes?
I could go on for some time picking the hell out of the sport bit by bit, while some people may see it as a personal attack, it's all about getting more bums on seats and making BMX more successful. I don't have all the answers but I have a lot of ideas, I am sure I am not the only person who thinks about how we can make BMX better. If you have some ideas go to the forum and share them with the rest of us. Remember this is our sport, we need to work together to make it better for everyone.

BMXAustralia press release
In a World first, BMX Supercross will be held outside of
Europe and USA when it comes to Adelaide in April 2008. BMX Australia
has confirmed that the international cycling body, UCI BMX has
given the fourth and final Supercross event just four months before
BMX makes its debut as an Olympic sport in Beijing. The South Australian
State Government and Events South Australia have been instrumental
in the bid for the Supercross event.
BMX Australia’s President, Graham Arnold said, “The reason we have been given the Supercross is largely due to the intense background work behind the scenes from Events South Australia and the State Government. They have supported BMX to get this off the ground.”
With Australia as one of the top three leading nations in BMX racing Arnold also stated. “This is an indication and recognition of the technical ability that exists within BMX in Australia.”
According to BMX High Performance coach Sean Dwight, Australian riders need to compete in Supercross events to prepare for the Olympic format. ”Supercross is similar to what riders will face in Beijing.” Dwight is excited by the announcement. “We will spend a lot of time overseas so now this gives our riders an opportunity to race at an international level in our backyard.”
Supercross has a higher starting rank between 6-8 metres high with larger jumps which results in faster racing. Riders will also compete in seeding time trials which allows them to have preference to starting lanes selection.
For the riders vying for selection in the first Olympics, the Supercross will be an important chance to earn valuable bonus UCI points. It will be their second last chance to gain UCI points before the last international event, the World Championships in China in July. One of the selection criteria for the Olympic team is the rider’s UCI points.
The Supercross track will be a major logistics operation with the indoor track being the first one ever attempted for the Supercross format. Within 48 hours after the finish of the Supercross event the dirt will be rearranged and changed for the National BMX Championships just one week later.
Adelaide also was announced recently as the host city for the 2009 World BMX Championships.

ONE KENDA press release
Arturs Matisons, Maris Strombergs, Edzus Treimanis from Latvia,
Roy van den Berg from Holland and Emilio Falla from Ecuador were
the ONE/Kenda riders in France to compete in the UCI Supercross.
Again the track was spectacular, a little dangerous due to the wind, but FAST.
Friday, time trial day.
Maris Strombergs did a fast lap in the first run, only to be beaten by Michal Prokop from Czech Republic….the current leader in the World Cup at that moment.
In the second run Arturs Matisons did very well, only to be beaten by Prokop by just a few thousands of a second.
So ONE/Kenda had 2 riders in the top three.
At night the track was changed. One of the jumps on the third straight needed to go to make it possible to jump the doubles.
So saturday morning all rider did some pratice laps. Arturs crashed hard in one of them, but was able race.
All riders looked fast. Edzus Treimanis did very well, as did Emilio Falla, sho had supergates.
Roy van de Berg was getting the hang of it. The closer he got to the main the better he got.
Arturs and Roy made it into the main.
After winning nearly all races, Arturs couldn’t get the holeshot this time.
After Robert de Wilde passed him Arturs finished in 6th, followed by Roy van den Berg in 7th.

The 2006 South Australian State Championships were run over
the weekend at the Cross Keys track in the northern suburbs of
Adelaide. I enjoy racing in Adelaide, the people there are generaly
quite relaxed and friendly, and the riders are highly competitive,
and so they should be they have hosted 3 of the last 4 Australian
national championships.
The last time I had raced at Cross Keys must have been about 15 years ago, perception changes over time, something I hadn't realised until arriving at Cross Keys on Friday. The track is in an industrial area on a block that's probably only 1.5 acres, covered in trees and a track that winds all over the place using nearly all of the space available and leaving little room for spectators. It's lucky that they only ended up with 322 entries.
I am surprised that the titles were allocated to the Cross Keys track, and not surprised that people either chose to not enter or withdrew. The track starts with a long first straight that goes from the 8 lanes out of the gate, to 6 lanes by the first jump which is a tabletop, to 3 lanes on the step double, to just 2 lanes on the step up into a sharp left hand turn that really has one line. Exiting the first corner you pedal up over a bridge then down to a tight left turn, back under the bridge to a step down double and over a step up to tight left turn, to a drop off to a small rhythm section then the track basically has a few small jumps and short straights and tight, tight corners switching back and forth. After the first straight the rest of the track is very much old school, small, flat and kind of boring. Each race went like this; a drag race to the first corner, then a game of follow the leader the rest of the way to the finish line. What was funny was in one race that I had the gate dropped half way through a call, putting everyone off, it dropped the rest of the way when it should have, half the field stopped, the rest kept going. Telling the chief steward afterwards, he didn't even want to know about it, tell us to tell the starters. It was concerning that he was turning a blind eye to a potential safety issue, it was lucky that no one was injured by the gate.
Pro Ladies
Kerrie-Lee Lucas dominated the pro ladies class, which had just
a full gate, meaning that every race counted to the end result.
With the overall win wrapped up, in the last moto she was left
in second place but used her experience into the tight first corner
to bump her way into first, the only thing is it didn't quite
work out the way she'd planned. By the time the dust settled there
were only 2 riders left on their bikes. Lucas was the first to
get up out of the carnage and slipped into the three spot. Angela
Wooding took the second overall. Susan Kirkham too third.
A Men
With 2 full gates of A Pro racing was tight, and at times quite
physical, on the narrow Cross Keys track. In the main it was Chad
Higgins who got the snap. Aaron Wheatland went with him and was
patiently sitting on his back wheel until he made a last ditched
effort to come under Higgins in the last corner. The problem was
he scrubbed off speed and allowed Justin Braybon to slip into
second. Wheatland had to settle for third.
AA Men
With 2 full gates the AA mens class was quite close. The two standouts
in the motos were Brian Kirkham and Mike Fenwick. When the gate
dropped in the main it was Kirkham who had his wheel in front
but he was on the outside of Fenwick. Fenwick took the extra pedal
into the first corner lowered his center of balance and came out
on to the bridge in first and was unchallenged to the finish line.
Matt Willoughby got past Kirkham before he managed to get back
on the gas. Kirkham was catching Willoughby, but there just wasn't
enough track for him.
30 & Over Masters 20"
No mater what you call it, the Vet Pros really are out in their
droves these days. Scruse, Fisher, Bevon, Barnes and the boys
in NSW and it was Peter Trenwith, Danny Galea and David Comport
heading up the Victorian and South Australian riders. Both Trenwith
and Galea have deep AA Pro roots and could have been quite comfortable
and in the mix with the A Pros but decided to support a class
that was created for guys like them. With a gate of riders Trenwith
took the clean sweep. Galea was all over his back wheel, but just
couldn't quite get their. David Comport had some good finishes
especially on day 2 but was just beaten to the podium by Shane
Jenkins. It was the same top 3 for the 30 & Over Masters cruiser
class.
The race meeting was run well, I just would have expected that the state organisation would have more pride in the event and put it at a venue that's more worthy from a rider and a spectators point of view. And the presentation at the end was dragged out for about 2 hours. What's wrong with presenting trophies across the finish line?

There's talk that the clothing requirements in Australia
will change for the new year. I am unsure if it's an international
thing, but basically riders will be able to race in shorts, providing
they have knee/shin protection. Also the pain in the butt rule
about jerseys needing to be tucked in will finally be gone.

It was publicly announced at the South Australian state titles
in Adelaide on the weekend that South Australia will be bidding
for a round of the 2008 UCI Supercross series. If the bid is successful
they will also try for the Australian Championships at the same
venue a week later. The track will be modified for the Australian
Championships.

Levi Collins had a great day of racing at
the Lilydale Spring Cup on the weekend, having finished in the
top qualifying spot for the main. When the gate dropped in the
main event Levi went with the lead pack that included Tony Harvey,
Josh Callan and Shannon Rademaker. That's where he ran into some
trouble and hooked up on Rademaker before hitting the ground hard.
He had to settle for 8th for the day, but will be back for more.
The South Australian state championsips were on over the weekend as well. That's where the rest of the bmxultra.com crew were
Shane Jenkins hit up the 30 & Over masters 20" and cruiser classes. With the likes of 1996 Pro Mens champion Peter Trenwith, former AA Pro legend Danny Galea and powerhouse David Comport in the class it was a good test of Shane's fitness after spending nearly a month off his bike to recover from a knee injury. With a good first straight and consistancy Shane finished up with a couple of third place finishes.
Co-sponsored riders were also representing well:
Todd "Scooby" Guyers had a great weekend
finishing in second in the 15-16 cruiser class and third in the

I don't think I am the first foreigner who competed on the NBL
national circuit, having raced for a US national amateur ranking,
although I might be the first to have done it from Australia without
actually living in the country. With BMX racing's debut at the
Olympics approaching rapidly I am sure it will become more common
for foreign Am's to hit up the US for some serious competition.
It's been a common thing for the world's best pro riders to converge in the US to gain valuable experience and, in most cases, try to make a living from BMX racing.
I think it's obvious that this trend will trickle down to the amateur ranks as parents and coaches try to develop talented riders into elite potential, especially for those who have the funding.
Now things have already changed with the way you earn a US national ranking since last season. But I am sure that this will be a good guide for those of you considering racing on the NBL national circuit.
Oh and before I start, I only chose to compete for an NBL ranking, because it's the only one that you can do in a short-ish stint (around 5 weeks). To qualify for the ABA NAG (national age group) title, you would have to stay in the US for a couple of months, which is a shame, if I had to choose between an ABA and NBL national I would choose ABA each time. I have had a lot more fun at ABA events, and I like the transfer system, but that's getting off the subject a little.
That said you needed to race a minimum of 5 rounds, which could be either all national events or a combination of up to 2 regional's and the rest 3 nationals (as long as the combination adds to 5 - I hope I have made that clear enough). The minimum has now become 6 rounds.
As a foreigner the NBL release their calendar quite late, which can be difficult when trying to plan a trip in advance, but since you need to race at the Grand Nationals, which are right at the end of the series, to qualify for a ranking, that shouldn't matter. Just plan the trip to take you around 5 weeks through August leading up to and including the Grand Nationals.
Each NBL US national event is run over 2 days, with each day being a separate race, with separate sets of points. Meaning, at a minimum, you would need to race over 4 different weekends, at 4 different locations. The only cheap way to do that is to car pool and camp at the tracks. I guess you could follow in Wade Bootes' footsteps and buy a bomb van to get around in, and just sleep in the back. All the tracks that I have been to offer camping at the track and with all the facilities. There seems to be quite a few people camping at the track in anything from simple tents upwards, and some of them in very expensive looking fully decked out RV's.
Entry Fees
Ok back to it. Each day of racing will cost $US45 for Am classes, we'll talk US dollars because of the varying exchange rates. But for the Aussie readers it's about a 1.3 conversion rate give or take a few cents. Which means that Am entry fees are near enough to $AUS60 per day. If you pre register online I think you can save $US5 per day. Things may change, but if your country is associated with the UCI you shouldn't have to pay for an NBL licence, you might want to check with the NBL before you leave your country though. Being a foreigner you might want to get that extra race in and make it 6 races so you can throw away your worst score, because they only take your best 5 and the Grands score. Besides you are traveling all that way, you may as well make the most of it. So $US45 a day by 6 days is $US270 and Grands entry fees are $55. The Grands is just a single race on the one weekend, with 3 qualifying races on Saturday and the 1/8ths, 1/4s semis and finals on the Sunday. Meaning you will spend $US325 (around $AUS420) just on entry fees.
Accommodation/Car Hire
You can spend as much or as little as you like on accommodation, but it's something that you will definitely want to share, accommodation in the US is a little more expensive that what I am used to in Australia, but I don't know how it compares with other countries. Also car hire can be expensive, but it's so competitive over there if you shop around you will find some nice deals on the internet, just don't leave it until the last minute. The NBL web site has a separate web page for each event, and most of them list accommodation at discounted BMX rates, it's well worth checking out, but make sure you get in early.
Getting Around
Flying around the US is also not cheap, if you are traveling on a domestic flight with your bike you might want to budget for the bike because it can cost between $US50 and $US100, depending on the airlines. Also be aware that you can fly with two check-in items, but they must not exceed 50lbs, around 23 kg, or they start charging extra. I think it's $US15 for the first extra 10lbs, which can be cheaper than paying for a bike.
I was given a lot of advice about cutting costs when traveling with a bike, and I should have listened to them because I have had to cough up money for carrying my bike in a bike box, but also carrying it in a purpose built bike bag, made specifically for a 20 inch BMX bike. The problem with the bike bag is that it's big, huge in fact, mostly because it's padded and that you leave the back wheel in. Because of the size of the bike bag I was charged $US100 for an oversized bag by United Airlines, that's without them knowing there was a bike in it. So I would advise against both of those methods.
What seems to work for the guys who travel a lot is to use a large ice hockey gear bag. You can pick them up off ebay with wheels and plenty of storage space (look for a goalie bag for even more room) for a good price. The thing is you will also need to remove your back wheel to fit the whole bike in the bag, but I am sure it's worth the cost cutting. You will also need to get hold of some padding to separate your frame from your wheels, etc. The advantage of a hockey bag is that you don't have to pay extra for any other sporting equipment, only bikes. If they see that it's a hockey bag they will just assume it's sporting equipment.
Another alternative is to take two suitcases and split your luggage with the bike over the two cases. For example you might put the frame, cranks, etc in one and the wheels and handlebars in the other. Make sure you have plenty of luggage on top so the bike isn't so obvious, if they decide to take a look. If you are asked what's in the bags, which is unlikely, you just have "sporting equipment", or if they ask for specifics, it's just bike parts.
Eating
Eating in the US is noticeably more expensive than eating in Australia. The exchange rate is not so great for Australians, also prices listed usually don't include taxes and the 16-20% tip that's just a part of everyday life in the US. So consider the extra charges when ordering food.
One way to cut food costs is to buy your food from the grocery store, don't expect to see the same products that you have at home. You also have the option to eat at one of the many chains of fast food restaurants, tips are not expected there. I would suggest Subway and Quizno's if you like subs and if you like bagels Deanna introduced me to Panera Bread, which makes for a good cheap breakfast, but I think that's only available in the Mid West.
Other tips
Make friends - it's always great to meet new people with common interests, and most BMXers enjoy the social side of racing. The locals can generally tell you where to eat, what is in the area worth checking out, what areas to avoid, and where to go for a bit of riding (nearby race tracks, skate parks and dirt jumps). You will find that Americans are as interested in traveling to Australia as Australians are to travel to the US.
Classes vary in depth - most of the classes have outstanding riders, however some classes have a whole lot more depth than others. While it might be easy for a competitive rider to make the top 10 in one class the next class above or below could be quite competitive. Don't be disappointed if you don't reach your goal.
Understand the points system - if your goal is an over all ranking make sure you have a good understanding of what it takes to maximize your points. I know in Australia people conserve their energy doing what it takes to make the main where they will go for the win. That's because each race is a stand alone race. Although that's not what the NBL points system encouraged in the past, the new system is all about good placings in the main with some bonus points in the motos.
Combined classes - An interesting thing I noticed is that people who are within driving distance of an event will usually race for just the one day then head back home. Saturday races are generally bigger than Sunday. So Sunday you might see some combined classes. You might want to ask how the points work for combined classes, because last year there were some real advantages with combined classes in the way the overall scores worked. For example if you were the only rider in your moto in your class you would automatically get maximum points, meaning you could rest up and wait for the main. I am not sure how things have changed now that the emphasis has been put on how you finish in the mains.
BMXAustralia press release
Townsville youngster, Todd Pascoe rode like a demon to take
out the AA Men’s State Title by a clear margin today in
his home town. Cheered on by supporters, the 18 year old led into
the first berm and stayed away for the remainder of the elite
class race.
“I’m pretty stoked. It just worked out the way I wanted it,” said an elated Pascoe at the finish. Being on his home track at Idalia suited Pascoe. “I’ve got the track pretty dialed. I just know the fastest line to take,” Pascoe said. After racing as a junior last season this was Pascoe’s first experience racing against many of Australia’s top riders including Sunshine Coast’s Jamie Gray as well as experienced Julian Lim from Brisbane. Gray finished in second with Pascoe’s team mate, Ashley Pemberton in third.
The women’s National Champion, Krystal Cranfield from Gladstone was no surprise to secure herself a title after placing second last year to injured rider, Renee Junga from Brisbane. Cranfield stayed out of trouble on the first straight and went on to win while Townville’s promising youngster, Rachel Pascoe was squeezed out of the first straight putting her out of contention. Bundaberg riders, Tanya Thiele and Ceilidh O’Sullivan took out second and third respectfully.
Rachel’s brother Luke won the A Men’s final after taking command of the race early. He beat Kurt Nicholls from Cairns and third was Kristofer Ulyate from the Gold Coast.
Other riders who performed well were Townsville’s Jacob Price who won the 12 year boys. Price had the most impressive ride of the titles after missing a gate start then catching up to go on to win his moto race on Saturday.
Gold Coast brother and sister, Steven and Madison Janssen, won their division of 16 boys and 12 girls respectively. Nerang club’s Karlten Wolsley also won the 8 boys division.
Mackay ‘s Adam Shields won the 13 boys while Proserpine’s Bridget Warren won 14 girls.

I was asked to check out an entry form for my club, Northern
Park, to add some sponsors logos and give it a quick polish, because
it's a entry form template that looked like a 5 year old had put
it together. In the template it had 4 motos, so I changed it to
3, because I know people would like to do more than just race
on the weekend. I personally know a lot of people who don't race
because it takes up what may as well be the whole day to get through
around 120 riders. That's 120 riders and I was at the NBL Grand
Nationals a month ago when they were pumping through a round of
motos which involved 2,600 riders in 2-3 hours. Time isn't something
that you can just throw around and in particular for families
who have parents that work on Saturdays or even riders who work
Saturdays. So it was expected that the meeting would start at
about 10:00 am and finish at around 12:30 pm, or even earlier.
Perfect for people that want to spend some of their weekend catching
up with friends (outside of bmx), relaxing, or what ever. Do I
have a personal agenda here? Yes I want to attract more people
to the event and try something that might boost the numbers, if
we don't change something thing will remain just as they are and
that is not good enough.
I found out later that the 3 motos was changed back to 4 because,
according to Pam Beerens:
"Please take the motos back to 4 (four) motos + Finals,
as agreed with Rob, otherwise with the 80 - 100 riders as anticipated
the day will be over in no time. Last weekend at Eastfield with
160 riders and 3 mottos and finals we were finished by 12.15.
So the idea is to give everyone value for money and a good time
- the way to do that - give them track time."
Hmmm, value for money? The entry fees will be $8...isn't that enough value for money? What we should be doing is giving people options, if they want extra track time, they race the 3 motos and finals and stick around, if they don't they can go home early and have half the day to do what they please.
I have raced a number of US nationals now and the NBL and ABA can get around 120 motos finished, with finals, in 2-3 hours. 120 motos might equate to 600 riders, and they may do only 2 or 3 motos, you don't hear them complain about track time. Let's take the examples of the National Championships or World Championships, how many motos do they run? Oh that's right...3!
The way things are going in Victoria, with poor attendances, it could be worth trying something "different". I think that Pam is completely out of touch with what BMXers want today, but I am quite willing to be proved otherwise.
To put it in it's simplest terms, people go to a race for competition. If they want value for money/track time, they can go to the track any time they like, and for free, they can also ride for as long as they like. What do you think? 3 or 4 motos? Have your say on our forum.
