31/01 XBR newspaper

by Shane Jenkins
I have a lot of respect for freelance BMX photographer Gavin D. He takes some awesome photos (I have some proudly displayed in my lounge room), he has also put together some great BMX racing calendars over the past couple of years. When I heard he was putting together a BMX racing newspaper I had no idea what to expect. I picked up a copy last night, checked it out and was very impressed. Sure it's not the glossy style magazine that most Aussie/NZ BMXers have become used to with BMXPress and imported mags like BMXPlus, but what makes it different is that it's pure race. There are contributions from New Zealand and every state in Australia with plenty of photos per page. Even a BSX article. The XBR newspaper gets a big double thumbs up from us. If you are interested in picking up a copy, check with your local club or check out subscriptions through www.xbr.com.au

30/01 Nerang was the venue for BMXSQ dk SHOOTOUT-2

BMXSQ press release
(the first event of the series due to round-1 at Cent. Plains being rained out)

250 riders attended the meet and it was plain to see, those from previous shootout series, knew that every point counted towards the final round points tally - with plenty up for grabs, including the BMXTRONIC start system which will be given away at the last round to a lucky top three rider.

Each round of the series will see the top 8 pro riders from the previous round, take on the BMXTRONIC Start system, with the fastest timed rider receiving $50 cash each round.

This first round, the contenders were drawn out of a hat - to start off. The contest was conducted during the break, so the riders only had one test gate..., and then the real-deal. It was a real test of the riders ability to adapt quickly to the system..., and I'm sure concentration was tested to the limit.

The system was set up on the famous Nerang start hill. Smiley Janssen, Wade Bootes, Errol Domin, Ref Mark Timperly, and Tony Ulyate Officiating. We had no sooner set the system up and announced what was going on..., and the first straight was flooded with onlookers each side of the first straight, to gain a front row seat of the action. It more resembled a top-fueler Drag race at Willowbank Race-Way...!, as the competitors primed them selves to run the gauntlet.

Wade screamed out the rider times as the ever growing crowd encroached the track to cheer their favourite champions.

The contenders were (drawn from hat) - (in timed order):

Dirk Winter - 1.78 (winner)
Tomas Cooper - 1.85
Neil Brunjes - 1.87
Renee Junga - 1.92
Mitchell Howard - 1.95
Jasper Gaffney - 1.97
Ben Maher - 2.06
Mike Young - 2.14

As above, Dirk Winter took the BMXTronic / BMXSQ $50 dollars cash. Dirk, a recent zonal border jumper to SQ, showed real power out of the blocks..., and the ability to adapt to the new pressure scenario. Dirk couldn't be convinced that the $50 cash he'd just won, had to be spent on a "Special.. Officials...!!??" 2 slabs transfer fee.. to SQ.., and wisely pocketed the bucks towards probably many events he will be attending this year. Well done all.... and a great new and exciting attraction at the DK Shootout Series..., thanks to BMXTronic. You can check out the system at www.bmxtronic.com

See you all at Centenary Plains this Sunday 5th for the second DK Shootout event - this event starts at 12pm and is the catch up round due to round-one being rained out.
The BMXTronic Contest will be on again... and the contenders for the $50 cash will be:

30/01 Supercoss/Sirius 2006 line up

Sirius Bicycles Press Release
Sirius Bicycles is pleased to announce its SUPERCROSS BMX team line-up for 2006.

Blake Collins (15 Boys) – Australia
Mikey Williams (Junior Men) – New Zealand
Andrew Gillett (Elite Men) – Australia

Although Mikey is on his gloss black Pro XXL Evo G6 already, Blake’s Evo G6 frame & Andrew’s UL frame are currently in transit.

Blake & Andrew will be rocking the ACT Titles in Canberra in early March, then Blake will be jetting his way over to New Zealand where he & Mikey will team-up at the Northern Region Champs in Auckland, which is also another Continental Ranking Round for the Oceanic region.

Be sure to check back to read about how all three riders are performing on their SUPERCROSS machines in 2006.

The Bikes...

While a lot of things remain the same on the new USA made Generation 6 EVO a few subtle changes help the EVO shed 6 ounces over the previous model & retain all of the strength & speed. A few new CNC pieces such as the new Internal & External Relieved Headtube & Bottom Bracket shell, and the new 3D dropout offers more weld area, better chain clearance & lighter weight. The trademark headtube gusset has been retained to keep the front end strong for that odd trip to the trails while still keeping the overall weight of the frame down. NB: The EVO G6 Pro XL frame weighs in at approx 3.3lbs.

Planning is underway for a less expensive production version of the Evo Frame in 2006 & a complete bike may also be in the offering.

The EVO G6 is currently available in 7 20” sizes, from Micro to Pro XXL & in 3 24” sizes. RRP on the EVO G6 Frame is $849.

The UL has been the SUPERCROSS Flagship for the last 3 years, it is a triple butted air hardened tubeset with a post weld normalisation and heat treatment process, and at 4.2lbs for the Pro size it is one of the lightest Cro-mo frames on the market & has been a durable performer as well. The laser cut Cro-mo dropouts, the CNC machined headtube, built in seat post clamp and split cable guides is just a few of the features you can see. The UL is available in Expert, Pro, Pro XL, Pro XXL & Pro 24” sizes. RRP on the UL Frame is $799.

Visit www.siriusbicycles.com for a SUPERCROSS BMX dealer near you.

27/01 Ultra in the line of fire

by Shane Jenkins
Living in the country on enough land for a backyard track has it's advantages, but then there are always disadvantages. On Sunday a lightning storm started bush fires in the Kinglake National Forest, since then the Kinglake township has been under threat, and many people have already evacuated the area.
I live in Pheasant Creek (Kinglake West area) which is about 6-8 Kms west of the fires which have been slowly heading south. At the moment we are safe, but given there are so many variables when talking about fire and trying to predict what might happen we just have to hope that mother nature is kind to us.
Thanks to everyone who called, sms's and emailed over the past few days.

24/01 BSX race report

by Shane Jenkins - bmxultra.com
A little background...
I must admit, the idea of one on one BMX racing is hardly innovative. There have been various similar events held in the US over the past few years where pros race against each other one on one on purpose built technical and tight tracks. From the Gravity Games, to the John Purse sprint race, to double downs, to Stumpy's sprint trails. We have all seen photos or even footage of this unique style of racing. Where BSX is different however is that it's primary objective is to raise money for the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation. The timing was perfect, Australian BMXers have been looking for something new, something that would put some fun back into the sport for the pros. Especially since it has turned into very serious business with the debut of BMX in the Olympics just 2 years away.
Instead of doing something directly for the sport and trying to raise money for a huge prize pool for the riders, we decided it was time to try and shake the "BMX Bandits" name that seems to have stuck with BMXers since the early 80's Nicole Kidman film. You know the deal, you would regularly hear that kids on BMX bikes would steal old ladies handbags and shoot through on BMX bikes. That is pretty much all the press that BMX would get. We all know this is not what BMX is about. Well, damn it, it's time to set the record straight. We are here help others, and why not make it a charity like the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation. Besides, BMX has put it's share of kids through the hospital.
The only major hurdle for the event was insurance...without insurance the event wouldn't be possible. BMX Australia could only offer insurance if we were to affiliate the backyard track and pay sanctioning fees, which seemed a little harsh since the idea was to raise money for a charity in a one day event. So after talking to a bunch of insurance brokers we found a policy that would suit the event, covering the riders and spectators.
The funny thing was how easy it was to find support from riders, and sponsorship both inside and outside the BMX industry. Raising money for a charity like the Royal Children's Hospital seemed to open doors that normally wouldn't be open to BMX, and running the event independently meant that there were no restrictions as to how we ran things and what products we could help promote on the day.
Before we get into the details of the event, there were a bunch of people who have dedicated a lot of time to help us get this thing off the ground especially Craig Merritt of Dirt Designs, David Collyer of Kadarina Berries (who supplied the dirt and a bobcat for many hours), Shannon Rademaker, Jamie and Brandan Bullows, Scott Bradley, Adam, Chris and Barb Carey. Of course we couldn't have done it without our gold partners who liked what we were planning and joined us early in the piece, including Adam Robb from TotalBMX, and the folks at ManageSoft. TotalBMX helped us to fund setting up the event so we could start getting everything ready months in advance. It's no secret that I am also the webmaster for ManageSoft, but how they managed to get involved isn't so obvious. In September last year I was sent off to the Boston office for two weeks to work on a marketing campaign. During that time I hit up the ABA Canadian Grand Nationals and the NBL Supercross Nationals at Woodward, after some good results, which included a win at the Canadian Grands, ManageSoft ran an article in their company newsletter where the charity event was mentioned. Michael Carabetta, my manager, got right behind it and organised a donation from the company as well as making a significant donation of his own. The ManageSoft employees have also organised fund raising events and 9 employees volunteered to help on the day (Thanks guys). Without their support the event would have only been half as successful.
On the day...
After a funny week with rain and storms leading up to the event the weather was perfect on race day. It started off overcast and a little cool but once the clouds cleared it was a beautiful sunny day. We fired up the webcam early so people who couldn't make it could watch as things were set up and people arrived. The webcam went down very well, we had sponsors, rider's parents, and BMX fans from all over the world watching and listening in for the day. The gates weren't supposed to open until 10:30am, but there were a number of people keen to get in early so we started to let them through at about 9:30. As the big guns started to show up for practice there was a little carnage, the tighter corners brought even the best riders unstuck. The BSX track corners were much different to a normal track, you couldn't hit them at full speed, which a lot of riders learned very quickly. Some even struggled with the steep (30 degrees) short starting hill. 30 & Over open wheel class rider Brian Kelly tried to snap as you would a normal gate and found himself flat on his back quicker then you can say "ouch". It knocked a little wind out of him, but he was back for more and after a slight adjustment he had the gate all sorted out. After dropping his bike twice, Luke Madill was spotted smiling and giggling and he continued through practice. When we asked him what was up, he said "I'm just having fun with it, when I get too serious I crash". It seemed to work pretty well for him too.
As practice finished we found that only 30 riders had entered for the pro open, an announcement on the PA calling for 2 more riders out of our crowd took the numbers up to 32, the minimum we required for the event so that all riders would have to race in an elimination race in the first round. A couple of extra minutes of practice for them while the rest of the riders got together for some photos and had a discussion about how things would be run.
The first of the seeding timed runs was supposed to be an exhibition run by 12 year old Brandan "Boxhead" Bullows, but to make up numbers he was the youngest rider on the day he set a cracking time of 22.93 to get things started. Here's a useless piece of trivial for you; Brandon was 30-ish years younger than our oldest competitor, 80's BMX superstar Jamie Hales who was competing in the 30 and over open wheel class.
Next up was the pro women, Renee Junga took a tumble during practice and decided to pull the pin, when we spoke to her later she was disappointed because she really liked the track and it would have suited her style of riding. That left Ziggy Callan the fastest female by over 3.5 seconds with Rochelle Luke narrowly beating Carolyn Sobotka for second.

1 Ziggy Callan Redline/Total BMX VIC 23.79
2 Rochelle Luke Undecided/Freedom Felt WA 27.52
3 Caroline Sobotka   VIC 27.71

30 & Over Open Wheel class had only 4 riders but made for interesting viewing. On paper you would expect Brian Kelly, 2 times Australian Champion, to take the fastest time, but a slip up in the third straight brought him unstuck throwing him over the handlebars, he picked himself up and finished the lap, and left Ross Domigan to ride the fastest lap time for the class. Dean Coles narrowly beat out Jamie Hales for second.

The 32 riders in the pro open provided plenty of entertainment for the spectators. Retired AA Pro Scott Lacey and I both missed obstacles which meant a 3 second penalty (you would think as the track owner/builder that I would know it well enough by now right?). The penalty idea was to stop people taking the faster outside corners when they should be taking the tight inside corners, but since that didn't happen and as Scott said "missing an obstacle means you wash off all your speed anyway" I think we'll dump that rule in the future.
Daniel Johnstone set an early track record with a scorching time of 19.84 seconds. Josh Callan set the fastest time by an A pro shortly afterwards, clocking up a very respectable 20.53 seconds. Chris Flemming and Tom Siinmaa dropped their bikes in the last corner and both elected to pick up their bikes and run to the line. Danny Galea, not to be out done, dropped his bike in the third corner and ran one and a half straights to finish his run. Levi Collins was looking good during practice, he managed to pull off the fastest time for a Victorian, just beating out Josh Callan, with 20.35. Billy Jolliffe was also putting in a very fast run but tucked a little too low on the dirt jump doubles at the end of the third straight and nose bonked them, it washed off a little of his speed costing him dearly. He would have to settled for fourth fastest time with 20.06. Tony Harvey did his run with style finishing up with an attempted 360 on the last jump and still managed a time of 20.83. Luke Madill had a very clean and fast run, just beating out Daniel Johnstone's time with a new track record of 19.81. He was followed up by Wade Bootes who very experienced and well suited to this style of racing, he looked like he could be on track to beat Luke's time if it wasn't for a heavy nose bonk on the second jump on the second straight. He managed to push through that and keep his momentum going for a time of 19.86, the third fastest time of the day.

Once the timed runs were over the riders were awarded with the special BSX number plates that they would use until they were eliminated.
Eliminations...Round 1...
With small numbers in the Pro Women and 30 & Over Open wheel class we let them go for exhibition races to allow them to get some practice under race conditions and show off their skills.
In the Pro women Ziggy Callan was racing against Caroline Sobotka and looked to have the race wrapped up early until she fell victim to the tight fourth straight going over the handlebars.
In 30 & Over Ross Domigan and Brian Kelly had a close race with Ross taking the win while Jamie Hales showed Dean Coles why he was once Australia's fastest pro racer, leading from start to finish.
In the pro open, no real surprises but a couple of upsets. I was hoping to make it to the second round, but a match up against Jon Jon Hoare wasn't going to be easy, I planned to stick with him and see if he'd make an error, but instead tried to tuck too low on the second doubles in the second straight going over the handlebars superman style and taking out the crash of the day. It wasn't a great day for me, but at least I went out in style. Scott Lacey was looking comfortable and very fast on the track until he entered the inside first corner a little too fast and low and shot over the top of it, allowing Michael Vockenson to cruise through to the next round. Nathan Evans, who was having some success in the A Pro class during the Track Attack series, pulled a hard gate against Billy Jolliffe when cranking out of the second corner into the third straight he was still leaning over hard and washed out.
Round 2...
The Women had their second exhibition race, this time Ziggy Callan was matched up against Rochelle Luke, Callan rode a clean race and hung on for the win.
In the pro open Tony Harvey and Luke Madill met up and it looked like it was going to be an interesting race until Harvey cut too low entering the inside first corner too fast and dropped his front wheel over the top losing the bike and the race. After his crash Harvey signaled the 360 again and the crowd watched on, but again he didn't quite pull it off. The match up with Levi Collins against Jon Jon Hoare proved to be close, that was until Jon Jon dabbed his foot in the third corner allowing Levi to pull away enough to take the win. Wade Bootes outsnapped Shannon "Rudy" Rademaker at the start and proved to be too quick around the rest of the track leaving Rudy in his dust all the way to the line. Jamie Gray had a clean run against Matt Willoughby and started to pull away out of the first corner, Matt just didn't have the legs to match Jamie. Daniel Johnstone looked like he would just beat out Michael Vockenson until he stepped off the bike exiting the inside second corner, Michael went on to take the win. In a match up of Redline/TotalBMX stable mates, Luke Pretlove and Josh Callan, Pretlove made a couple of small errors allowing Callan to take the win. Billy Jolliffe, despite looking a little uneasy, proved too good for Matt Hill. Phirebird duo Glenn Codega and Joel Clarke started off level but Codega managed to pull away and take the win.
Quarter finals...
Levi Collins met with Luke Madill in a match up that would normally look a little biased towards Madill, but Levi held his own in the first half of the track falling about a wheel behind Luke. Levi had a clean run but Luke had the faster finish and took the win.
Wade Bootes met with Jamie Gray, and again it was a close match up, with both the riders at full throttle but Gray had a little trouble on the fourth straight and just couldn't maintain the same speed as Bootes. Bootes took the win to progress to the next round.
In a match up of the young guns, Michael Vockenson and Josh Callan, racing was tight. Callan dabbed his foot in the second corner which was enough for Vockenson to pull his wheel in front and stay there to the line.
The last of the quarter finals was a tough one for the riders and the judges. Billy Jolliffe and Glenn Codega were side by side to the last corner, Jolliffe dabbed his foot on the inside corner but managed to scooter across the line to win by the finest of margins over Codega.
Semi finals...
Semi finals for the 30 & Over, Ross Domigan and Jamie Hales were going at it neck and neck until Hales got the speed wobbles up on the third straight and lost speed, he missed out on the final for first and second by only a wheel. In the second semi Brian Kelly took control early and never looked back winning convincingly over Dean Coles.
In what was one of the the best match ups of the day, Wade Bootes and Luke Madill, you could guarantee a close race. With both riders giving it all they had, the result would be determined by who put in the smoothest run. Both riders were flawless, but Madill seemed to make better use of the tighter corners and jumps which got him to the line about a length ahead of Bootes.
In a match up between Michael Vockenson and Billy Jolliffe anything could happen, and it did. Jolliffe seemed to get the edge on the first straight, but then Vockenson fought back and leveled things up by the halfway mark, it was enough to force Jolliffe to make a mistake. Again Jolliffe dropped his foot in the last corner and scootered across the line, and again he hung on to scrape through to the next round.
Finals...
In the pro womens final Ziggy Callan got the stronger start with Rochelle Luke in tow, until Rochelle slipped her pedals on the second straight, allowing Ziggy to run away with the win.
30 & Over men.
In the race for third and fourth Jamie Hales blitzed the gate pulling a couple of lengths down the first straight over Dean Coles, the early lead was enough to allow Hales to take third for the day despite losing his pedals in the last corner.
Brian Kelly dominated the final for first and second place, Ross Domigan was hanging on and seemed to be making ground over the last half of the track but didn't have enough to reel Kelly in.
Pro Open
In the battle for third and fourth it was close all the way to the exit of the second corner where Vockenson looked to have put the power down in some loose dirt and washed off some speed, he got it together enough to keep going but not enough to stay with Bootes. Bootes took third and Vockenson fourth.
Luke Madill was super clean on the first half of the track in his race for top dollars. Billy Jolliffe was struggling in the first two corners, it looked like he was just trying too hard and it cost him too much time. Madill had run away with the win, Jolliffe had to settle for second.
Presentation/Auction
While the presentation was running, a number of riders stuck around and continued to ride the track. We got through the presentation quickly and on with what some thought was the most fun for the day, the auction for the riders signed number plates. This auction alone raised $789. The most prized plate was Luke Madill's and when bidding stopped it sold for $200.
While some people won plates at the auction for a bargain some of the more popular plates went like this:
1. Luke Madill $200
2. Jamie Hales $42
3. Shannon Rademaker $40
4. Wade Bootes $35
5. Jamie Gray $30
6. Shane Jenkins $25
7. Levi Collins $20
8. Ziggy Callan $20
9. Carolyn Sobotka $20
10. Billy Jolliffe $20
11. Joel Clarke $20

I would like to thank everyone that made the BSX event a success. To all the riders who participated you put on an awesome show thank you all for your support. To the spectators thanks for your support and coming along and helping us raise money for the Royal Children's Hospital. To our partners thanks for everything leading up to and during the event, it has been great dealing with you all.

The Total/ManageSoft BSX raised over $3000 for the Royal Children's Hospital, but there are still donations and t-shirt sales coming in, so we won't have a final figure for a couple of weeks.

One Bicycles press release
ONE Bicycles and KENDA Tires have joined forces in a BMX team:
ONE KENDA BMX RACING TEAM.

For years ONE Bicycles has been a leading team in Europe.

3 years ago ONE came up with great concept – a world team. Top riders from all over the world in one team to get brand recognition.

Today we see more teams following this concept and call their team a world team.

ONE and KENDA are now working towards the 2008 Olympics.

With a team of top riders from all over the world ONE and Kenda hope to see as many riders of their team in China to attend the Olympics.

A commercial team will always be more interesting for companies, especially in Europe and towards the Olympics. Commercial teams get more exposure by using the official team gear. There are no limits for publicity.

This is something you won’t see with national teams, where there is a restriction for publicity. This is the major reason why ONE Kenda, along with some other big teams in the world joined BMXTTO, the world wide Trade Team organisation.

In the coming weeks we will anounce the riders that are part of the ONE KENDA ONE KENDA BMX RACING TEAM.

24/01 Formula Bicycles’ Donny Robinson doubles up in Florida

Formula Bicycles press release
Oldsmar, Florida – Factory Formula’s AA Pro “dR” Donny Robinson hit up the second stop on the ABA’s 2006 pro tour, the Gator Nationals in Oldsmar, Florida, looking to capitalize on the consistency that earned him the ABA’s National #3 AA Pro and Pro Cruiser spots in 2005. Donny’s Formula Solution Pro and Solution Pro Cruiser were totally dialed-in after his Formula debut two weeks ago at the ABA’s Silver Dollar Nationals in Reno, Nevada and he was ready for battle in sunny Florida.

Robinson had a bit of a scare in Saturday morning practice. “dR” crashed with Kyle Bennett in the first turn, which sent Bennett to the hospital for some stitches and had Donny feeling a little groggy. After sitting in the infield for twenty minutes, Donny proclaimed himself good-to-go for Saturday’s racing. He did not disappoint.

In Pro Cruiser, Donny rocked both Saturday and Sunday’s mains, coming out of the Sunshine state with a double for the weekend on the big bike. In AA Pro, “dR” looked good in Saturday’s first AA Pro main, winning the lap in fine style. In the second go-around, Robinson’s hopes for a AA win ended when he crashed with Derek Betcher in the last turn while in the second spot. He ended up with a seventh in that round, but landed on the podium with a third overall. Sunday, it was a case of déjà vu. Robinson once again won the first moto and crashed in the second main. This time “dR” finished a respectable fifth overall. “It wasn’t what I wanted, but I’m stoked to get the two cruiser wins,” stated Robinson. “I’m going faster than I ever have and I’m this close to getting a AA win. Congrats to DB on his first win.”

Next up for Robinson is the NBL’s RM59 Tropical Challenge race in Puerto Rico next weekend. Look for “dR” to rock it island-style aboard his Formula Solution rides.

The Formula Factory Team consists of Elite/AA Pro Donny Robinson, Superclass/A Pro Mike Lundy, 17 Expert Warren McDow, and 11 Expert Chad Kerley. Look for an announcement this week regarding Formula’s newest Elite/Women’s Pro pickup.

20/01 Track Attack results

by bmxultra.com
The 2006 Track Attack series would have to be the best so far with the largest turn out of AA Pros ever and strong fields in each class, including enough for 1/4 finals in the A Pro men at the first 2 rounds and semis for Pro women. With some of the pros including Wade Bootes and Luke Madill heading up to Thredbo for the Australian 4X Nationals it means that we have other riders filling the podium. In AA Pro Tony Harvey made a come from behind win over Jamie Gray on the very long and flat Eastfield track. Ziggy Callan won Pro women with Grace Ireland finishing second. Josh Callan won A Pro but was put back to second, we're not sure why but since Shane Classen was given the win, there must have been contact...wait a minute I thought BMX was a contact sport.

Here's the official full results so far

20/01 What's the real story behind the Rocket Team?

Rocket Racing press release
One year old last September, Rocket BMX (aka Rocket Racing) started as a 6 rider family spanning over 3 generations that was simply looking to get some sponsors and start a local team in Northern Virginia. It soon became evident that dealerships proved more promising than sponsorships. A part of that old lesson that you never get something for free. Rocket soon formed a Bike Parts and Apparel Business and began implementing a plan designed to grow a small team into one of the most respected teams in the NBL.

In addition to the family, a few well-respected local riders were acquired and that was all that was need to form a growing snowball of Virginia riders that has been forming for the past year. Rocket currently has about 30 National Riders and has been successfully competing against the top NBL Monster Teams at National Events.

So far this 2006 season, Rocket BMX has won first place in 1 out of every 3 National Team NBL events entered. How do they do that? It is a simple formula based on Having Fun and Supporting Each Other! Rocket has been focused on making their Virginia State Program into a training and bonding session that occurs 10 times (9 Qualifiers and 1 State Final) a season. Using the 4 state tracks, an indoor facility at Lexington, VA and a private track under construction, the Rocket training and bonding actually never stops. It is this philosophy that tends to develop and/or maintain Champion Riders. Rocket has been tempted to acquire established champion riders or to bring in riders from other areas, but frankly the team cannot finance that type of venture. Instead, they give their riders a “Rocket Bucks” incentive program that applies to their entire National rider base. The Rocket Team Manager, Jack Ward, is quoted as saying “There is more satisfaction taking the Cinderella Riders to an event and winning when you do not really expect it. Also, the parent support base is awesome when growing riders from within as the parents experience the process that will make their children blossom into champions.”

Rocket’s Team concept includes taking rider and parent input into the team sheet formulas, involving the kids in the Rocket BMX vending business and passing responsibility to the teenage riders to develop leadership skills and training from within. In addition, Rocket encourages Team Members often root for members of other teams and to root for sister teams as well as their own. Rocket even publishes the riders birth date on their website, which has been a definite taboo for many competitive teams. It is not all about making money or winning. The vending business (bike shop) helps to support the Team and the Team helps the vending business at events. On a similar note, Rocket endeavors to provide free clinics to newcomers to BMX and for fundraising charity concerns (Rocket raised $750 in a benefit clinic for the surviving family of a former world champion). Winning is fun, but giving back provides more satisfaction than anything. The bottom line, is a tight knit rider base, a cohesive family, and a promotional tool for BMX in general.

Sound a little glossy and sugar-coated? Not meant to be. It is just a little different and a good example of what we all eventually learn from each other...... that BMX is supposed to represent the good in all of us. Rocket is not perfect (just watch them in a flag lap sometime), but they are doing exactly what they set out to do in their mission statement; Having Fun and Supporting Each Other while making a positive imprint in the sport of BMX.

The Rocket Team is sponsored by Rocket BMX, Fly Racing, ANVICOM, Sign A Rama, and FMF. For more information on Rocket BMX visit www.rocketbmx.com.

16/01 Double A Marketing Race Report ABA Silver Dollar Nationals Reno, NV

Double A Marketing press release
The ABA season kicked off this past weekend with the traditional event in Reno, NV. With a new format for the ABA for the first time, the Pro Series tour is limited to 13 weekends, so each event will count that much more for the Pros to score points towards the overall title. Kyle Bennett wants the ABA #1 title to add to his list of #1 NBL Pro and UCI World Champion. This could be the year for Kyle, but 28 other pros wanted to say otherwise in Reno. Here is how Kyle and Dale Holmes, the only 2 Double A Marketing riders in attendance, finished up:

Kyle Bennett just doesn't slow down, no matter what time of the year it is. Once again, Kyle won AA again during the race weekend, as well as Pro Open. On Saturday, Kyle was the only one to give the AA winner Bubba Harris a run for the win and Kyle just missed out finishing 2nd. Kyle came back later that day to take the win at the first Pro Open event of 2006. On Sunday, it was all Kyle, as he won from start to finish, all 3 main events. Kyle has started off this season with win in AA/Elite at both the ABA and NBL opener, letting all the AA's know this is going to be the year of Kyle Bennett. Kyle's sponsors include Free Agent, KHS, Kenda, Sun Ringle, UGP, Thomson, Utopia Eyewear, THE Products, S & M bars, ATI, Shimano, Powerbar, Cyto Sport, and BMXpros.com.

Dale Holmes made his return to the USA racing scene, as he had been concentration on the European tour for the last part of 2005. Dale came out looking strong and not showing any signs of slowing down. On Saturday, Dale was in the Pro Open main event and finished up 5th. On Sunday, it seemed that Dale was fully back into the swing of things and was in both the AA and Pro Open main event, where he finished 4th in AA and 8th in Open. Dale's sponsors include Free Agent, KHS, Utopia Eyewear, Kenda, Sun Ringle, Thomson, Troy Lee Designs, S & M bars, THE Products, Shimano, Powerbar, Cyto Sport, and BMXpros.com.

Brandon Meadows made the trip up to Reno to thank his friends and fans for helping contribute to his injury fund. Brandon, who broke his femur just a week and a half ago, was looking good, was very positive, and cant wait to get back on his bike and onto the AA podium. We wanted to say thanks to all who contributed to Brandon, and a special thanks to his sponsors for 2006 for their support - Tangent, MacNeil, Kenda, Utopia Eyewear, Sun Ringle, Cyto Sport, Shimano, and Fly Race Wear. There will be more to come as Brandon gets ready to get back on track.

Double A Marketing proudly represents Cristian Becerine, Kyle Bennett, Dale Holmes, Christophe Leveque, Brandon Meadows, and Randy Stumpfhauser. For more information on any of the riders, or on Double A Marketing, visit www.BMXpros.com

13/01 Intense World Team Rider Race Report - Michael Robinson

Intense press release
Intense World Team Member, Michael Robinson competed at Centenary Plains BMX Club in Australia for Round 3 of the UCI World Ranking Series on January 8th in Brisbane. Michael has only competed in one other round, so he is playing catch up in the points.

Due to a huge thunderstorm the night before the race, the track was extremely soft and soggy, making the race that much harder on the Elite riders. All of the top elite riders from the Australian and New Zealand were in attendance, other that Warwick Stevenson, whom is still recovering from Knee Surgery, so the competition was very strong.

Following a disappointing 8th place finish at the UCI final the weekend before at Round 2 in Nerang for Michael, he was ready for a good main event result. As the main loaded up, it was easily one of the hardest main events in the history of the Australia series, with the best 8 riders in the country all in the main. Michael was focused, took the holeshot and was not challenged by any rider on his way to a huge Elite men’s win. Michael was extremely happy to take the win, as well as back up his recent announced to be added to the inaugural Australian BMX High Performance National Squad.

Michael looks forward to the rest of the UCI rounds, as well as attending some more of the USA UCI series events as well as the Sea Otter Classic Mountain bike event. Next weekend, Michael will be going to Thredbo for the Australian Mountain Bike 4x National Championships where he hopes to gain a position possibility for selection on the Australian Mountain Bike Worlds team.

12/01 2006 Factory Intense/Phantom/Ontrac Race Team

Factory Intense/Phantom/Ontrac press release
Intense BMX, a division of VSI Products, is proud to announce the formation of the 2006 Factory Intense BMX/Phantom/Ontrac racing team. After a one year deal in 2005 with Intense BMX being a supporting sponsor, Intense is proud to become the presenting sponsor of the 2005 ABA National #1 Factory Team.

The Team has the who’s who of Amateur BMX racing, with 8 age group ABA World Championship titles on the roster, includes riders like Joe Szurek, Nic Long, Billy Russell, Derik Bergh, and Sean Gaian, along with a strong and young 2 man A Pro team consisting of Kyle Cushman and Sergio Pena, as well as new Pro Girls standout Stephanie Barragan.

This collection of BMX racings best riders in each age group is what helped propel the team to the #1 ABA Factory Team Title.

With a family atmosphere and one of the nicest pit sets ups in BMX, the team looks like they are more out for a relaxing day at the races, rather than one of the best team in BMX racing looking to add another team win. This may be one of the keys to the team’s success, as both Team mangers Donovan Long and Chuck Colton look calm and cool at the races, letting the kids have fun, while at the same time doing their best at the events.

Look for the ABA’s 2005 #1 Factory team to be at all of the bigger ABA events, as well as the West Coast NBL nationals in 2006. The team has already started things off well with a win in the Factory team competition at the ABA 2006 season opener in Reno, NV on January 8th. We are proud to be a sponsor of one of the best BMX teams ever put together.

12/01 Team Staats/Dickies Nerang Race Report

Team Staats/Dickies press release
Happy New Year everyone! Here is a brief race report from the Nerang Nationals on the Gold Coast (Queensland), Australia.

The racing was everything we had expected it would be… fast, furious, & very, very hot! For kiwis used to milder temperatures, racing in the heat of a Queensland summer was more than we could bear. Suffice to say that lots of bottles of water & bags of ice were consumed, and ice-cold wet towels applied during the course of the weekend!

The Nerang Nationals were staged on Sun (New Year’s Day) & Mon. Qualifying for Age & Cruiser classes, along with the Pro classes was first up on Sun & with 46 riders entered in the AA Pro (men’s) event & a fast track, the racing was awesome!

Mon started with the ChampBikx time trials, followed by the UCI racing & the first round of the BMXA ChampBikx Series. At the conclusion of the morning session the Age & Cruiser classes continued with their final two qualifying motos & then proceeded onto semis & finals.

It was great to see so many kiwi riders make the trip & many of them performed very well. Only one senior rider, Marc Willers (World No 6), made both the AA Pro & Elite finals.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank some people. Thanks to Smiley Janssen & his crew for preparing an awesome track. The Nerang BMX Club for providing a shade for my team riders. And to Terry Mankowski for keeping us cool with the ice collars. And last, but certainly not least, Henry Mankowski for his race commentary & comic wit.

11/01 TeamWBR-Bootes leads UCI World Ranking Series

TeamWBR press release
Centenary Plains BMX Club was the host of Round 3 of the UCI World Ranking Series and the 2nd round of the Champ Bikx Series this past weekend in Brisbane. Due to a huge storm the night before, the champ bikx time trails were called off and racing started on schedule. With a very slow and wet track made for some hard racing which seen a few riders lose their breakfast. The club did an extremely great effort to make the race start on time which still saw exciting racing. Here is how the TeamWBR riders finished during the weekend.

Wade Bootes now is leading the UCI Oceania World Ranking Series by being consistent in the main events. In the final, Bootes had a bad start and had to come from behind to still place a spot on the podium. Robinson had the holeshot on his local track with Jamie Gray in second. Bootes made a last chance effort on the soft last straight but had to settle for 3rd. BMX Australia also announced this weekend that Bootes was appointed the new National Talent ID coaching position which will be focusing on a National Junior Development Program.

Alex Cossell regained himself from a disappointing race last week and made it into the Junior Elite Final. Cossell showed his talent of a true racer when making a fantastic move in the first corner which saw him take the lead. From here Cossell stormed away and won his first Junior Elite race for the season.

Jye Danielson is still sitting in 3rd position overall with another great effort in the main event of the 16 year Boys. With still recovery form injuries Danielson was happy with his 4th place on the day.

Michael Chasteauneuf made a last minute attempt to race on the weekend due to being sick in bed most of the week. His courage and hard effort still saw himself in the main event in the 15 year Boys. A great start had Chasteauneuf sitting in 2nd place, but the lake of energy due to the soft track saw Chasteauneuf slipping back to 5th place in the last 10 meters. With some well deserved rest, we will see Chasteauneuf back on the podium at round 3 of the Champ Bikx in Canberra March 4th

TeamWBR riders will be preparing for Track Attack, a long week of racing in Melbourne next week and hopefully an overnight trip to the National Mountain Cross Championship in Thredbo Jan 17th.

11/01 Knox gates/track update

by Greg Siinmaa
Knox will be running gate practice Thursday nights 6.30 to 7.30pm. The canteen will be open with hot food.

The first corner at Knox is progressing well, where as the step up leading into it still needs a little refining. We are waiting on some more filling to come but we won't have it before Track Attack. It works ok but we still have to build it up, make it longer and steepen the down ramp. Daniel Stocks
summed it up "at the moment it's not right but it will do". The doubles in the first straight have been reshaped a little (back to the original about 3 years ago) on the up ramp to give a little more lift. Just be aware the first time you hit them. Few more refinements are planned for 2nd straight and toilet bowl and if time permits the third straight into the last corner may change.

09/01 GT Bicycles Signs Joey Bradford

GT Bicycles press release
Bradford has over 200 National main event wins and is fresh off accomplishing the most difficult feat in BMX. Bradford took the "Grand Slam of BMX," winning the big four Championships: ABA Worlds, UCI Worlds, ABA National Champion and NBL National Champion.

At only age 16, Joey Bradford rides like a seasoned veteran. Bradford lives in Monterey, Cali. and competes in Junior Eite or Junior Men in BMX and 18-and-under Junior Expert class in MTB. Bradford’s riding the GT Moto in his MTB comps and the GT Ultrabox in his BMX comps.

“The GT Ultrabox rides great,” said Bradford. “The riding style is real smooth and it was easy to get used to. It manuals good and rides perfect. I am really likin’ it and can’t wait to start riding the GT Moto.”

“I am very exited to be on GT,” said Bradford. “I have always seen GT and wanted to be on the team. My first bike ever was a GT Mach one. I have always thought the program was very good and wanted to be a part of it. Now I finally am, and I can’t wait until next year.”

Despite his early success, Bradford hasn’t let all his wins go to his head. “I like to hang out with friends, go to the beach and be a normal kid,” said Bradford. But don’t let that humble attitude fool you. This is a guy who loves to compete.

“There’s nothing like the feeling like when you’re at the World Championships on the gate and can hear everyone yelling,” said Bradford. “It’s a great experience.”

Bradford’s goals for 2006? Nothing too ambitious. Just to win at least 80% of the nationals he competes in; double in Junior Men at the UCI Worlds; teach more clinics; have fun; double at the ABA Grands, NBL Grands and ABA Worlds; win the NAG 5 challenge; and win a race in South Africa (Africa is the only continent he hasn’t won a race on).

Welcome aboard, Joey. Show ‘em how it’s done.

Bradford’s Career Highlights:
· 14-time World Champion
· 10-time National Champion
· 13-time Race of Champions Champion
· 10-time State Champion
· 4-time Regional Champion
· Pacific Oceanic Champion
· Pan Pacific Champion
· Three-time Sea Otter Champion (Mountain Cross)
· Eight-time Western Regional Champion
· More than 500 National wins

06/01 Total/ManageSoft BSX update

by bmxultra.com
Only 12 days to go until the Total/ManageSoft BSX one-on-one pro challenge, that's set to raise over $5,000 for the Royal Children's Hospital, and things are coming together nicely.

Spectators entry fees
Since there are expenses related to allowing spectators to the event we have had to come up with a pricing structure that would cover the costs and help us raise money for the Royal Children's Hospital. The expenses include insurance, toilet hire and so on.
$30 Family (2 Adults and up to 3 children)
$10 Adult
$5 Child (up to 14 years old)
Infants and toddlers are free.
There will be more than just the racing for the spectators however, we will have door prizes, raffles and auctions.
Space is limited, so if you want to book your tickets and not miss out you can email us to arrange it or come to the bmxultra.com tent at the Track Attack.

T-shirts
Our track crew will be wearing BSX event T-shirts on the day of the event. If you are interested in buying one please email us with quantity and sizes, we will be taking pre-orders only. The T-shirts will be dusty blue with a navy blue print. The price will be $15 and profits will go to the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation.

Insurance

Because the BSX event is being run totally independantly to any BMX governing bodies we have our own very seperate insurance should anything go wrong. The event is not sanctioned in anyway by BMX Australia nor do they have any involvement. The BSX organisers chose not to pay affiliation and santioning fees for a one off event to raise money for a charity, this means that more money can go to the Royal Children's Hospital, we have total control of the event and the track layout. So if you hear rumours that there is no insurance for the event, then don't believe a word you hear. To tell you the truth we have 2 types of cover on the day, just to make sure.

06/01 TeamWBR - On UCI World Ranking Series Podium

TeamWBR press release
Nerang BMX Club was the host of Round 2 of the UCI World Ranking Series and the first round of the Champ Bikx Series this past weekend on the Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia. With over 100 riders lined up to compete in a 2 hour race block on a hot summers day was for sure going to give us some exciting and fast racing. The main feature of the Senior and Junior Elite categories battling it out for important World Ranking and Olympic Qualifying points were joined in with the New National Champ bikx Series which is catered for the 14-16 year olds. The track was in great condition which is one of the best track in Australia. Here is how the TeamWBR riders finished during the weekend.

Wade Bootes again showed his consistency and diversity from MTB to BMX by battling it out with the best riders in the Elite men's category. Bootes manage to use his power and experience to transfer to the main event. In the final, Bootes was having a close race for 2nd and 3rd with Jamie Gray, Bootes then took over 2nd place but then was challenged by Mark Willers from NZ. Bootes then regained and started chasing down Kamakazi who had the holeshot. Kamakazi held onto the win by a wheel with Bootes in 2nd and Harvey for 3rd.

Michael Chasteauneuf once again proved he is the National age champion by showing his skills on the technical track in the new Champ bikx series. Chasteauneuf cruised through the qualifying races to were he transferred to the main event in the 15 Boys category. In the final, Chasteauneuf dominated from the start and won by a considerable lead to take out the first round of the six round National Champ bikx series.

Jye Danielson continued to prove he is one of the best 16 year old boys in the World even though coming back from injuries. With not much preparation Jye manage to transfer to the main event and finished in a respectful 3rd place behind the talented Dirk Winter and Stevie Janssen of Australia.

Lacey Oliver currently 5th in the World had a tough race weekend in the 12 year old girls. Oliver was dominating all weekend until a crashed in one of the final rounds cost her big time. Oliver again did her best to come back for a win, but due to a total points race, Oliver lost by 1 point and had to settle for 2nd.

TeamWBR riders will be preparing for round 3 of the UCI World Ranking and round 2 of the National Champ bikx series this weekend at Centenary Plains BMX Club in Queensland.

TeamWBR is proudly supported by: Percentage Designs, One Ring, Volkswagen Australia, Hogs Breath Cafe, Velocity Wheels, Investco Merchant Bankers, JBL Audio, Strathfield car radio, ATI, Hayes Brakes, Fox Shox, IRC, Cane Creek, BSC, QuikShade, Bell Helmets, Truvativ chain guide, Funn, Nike Cycling, Shimano, Sockguy and www.TeamWBR.com.

by bmxultra.com
Travis Turesson is another of the many Australian pro riders who went to the US to chase his dreams of becoming a BMX Pro. He's had mixed results over his 10 years as a Pro in the US, but made a name for himself in the downhill events and had a standout year in 2005 on Diamond Back until he injured himself at the World Championships. We caught up with Travis for a chat, click here to read the interview.

03/01 Total/ManageSoft BSX Update

by bmxultra.com
The Total/ManageSoft BSX race is just around the corner now, just over 2 weeks to go.
30 & Over Open wheel class
We have added 30 & Over Open wheel class to the event. We need a minimum of 8 riders to make this class work. The only rule that would be different to any of the other is that no current AA Pro riders can enter this class. A mystery 80's Aussie BMX superstar will be competing. You will have to show up on the day to find out who it is. If there aren't enough riders for the class our mystery rider is likely to compete in the pro open men's class.
Entry forms

Entry forms will be available online soon. So we can get all the formalities out of the way early we will ask all riders to have them in by the third round of the Track Attack series. If you want to enter on the day you can do so, but get in early. Practice starts at 11am, if you are not entered by then the meeting will start without you.

02/01 Knox track upgrades

by Greg Siinmaa
It seems like not much has been going on but a dedicated small bunch at Knox have been toiling away on some major Mods at Knox. Now it may not seem like much, as it is only part of the first straight and the first corner that have been altered, let me asure you it wasn't a little job. The first straight has been aligned to the start hill. This has consisted of moving the doubles across to the center of the track by 3.5 meters (just on half of their width). The triples between the doubles have been replaced by a step up finishing with the first corner radius being shortened and the whole corner reprofiled. All should be complete by Track Attack.

02/01 BMXPros.com @ NBL Christmas Classic - Columbus, Ohio

BMXPros.com press release
The 2006 NBL Season kicked off in pure classic NBL style this past week in the Columbus, Ohio Convention center with one of the favorite BMX races of all time- The NBL Christmas Classic. After being in Florida for the past few years, the Christmas Classic was brought back to Ohio and the arena atmosphere made for some exciting racing action. With a awesome built track with a 2 strait away pro section offered for the Elite riders, it was Classic Columbus racing action and the fans loved it. Besides the regular NBL elite national event, Day 1 offered the first North American UCI Continental ranking event. Here is how the Double A marketing riders finished up for the weekend:

Kyle Bennett picked up right where he left off at the end of the ABA season, out front and taking home a win in Columbus. On Day 1, Kyle was in both the UCI and NBL Elite Main events. Kyle finished up 4th in NBL Elite and 7th in the UCI race. Sunday, things were back to normal, as it was Elite Pro and Pro Open. In the Elite main, Kyle started things off by winning the Sun Ringle Hole shot award, on his way to a huge Elite men's win. Kyle also was in the Pro Open main event, where he finished up 7th. Kyle's sponsors include Free Agent, KHS, Answer, Kenda, Sun Ringle, UGP, Thomson, S & M bars, ATI, Shimano, Profile, Powerbar, Cyto Sport, and BMXpros.com.

Randy Stumpfhauser wants to capture the NBL #1 Pro title back and if you watched him race this past weekend, you know he is serious. Randy lead almost every lap through out the weekend, pulling away from riders and doing it with style. On Day 1, Stumpy blasted out of the gate in the Elite main and was gone, no one was even close. In the UCI Elite main, he was out front, but cased the last jump before the 1st turn and slipped back to 6th. On Day 2, Randy was out for the win again, but a crash kept him from finishing top 3 and put him back to 8th.
Randy's sponsors include GT Bicycles, Hyundai, ODI, Kenda, Tangent, Sun Rims, Bombshell, Fly Racing, Powerbar, CTI Knee Braces, OGIO, Tool Shed, SDG, Easton, S & M, Cyto Max, and BMXpros.com.

Cristian Becerine made his USA appearance fro his new sponsor, Free Agent in Ohio. Cristian has signed a 3 year deal with Free Agent and along with Kyle and Dale Holmes, will make up one of the strongest Pro teams in BMX. On day 2, Cristian was in the Elite men's main event, and finished up 4th for the day. Cristian's Sponsors include: Free Agent, Answer, Kenda, THE, Vigor Helmets, Oakley, Sun Ringle, Shimano, Tool Shed, Powerbar, BMXpros.com, OGIO, Cyto Sport/Cyto Max, and Thomson Seat Posts.

Brandon Meadows went to the NBL Christmas Classic as his last race for Specialized and ready for a new 2006 season with a new team. On Day 1, it was evident that Brandon has been spending a lot of time on his bike, even with the birth of his daughter just 3 weeks ago. Brandon lead a lot of laps and made the Elite men's main event. A bad gate caused him to finish up 8th for the day. On day 2, Brandon was again out front a lot and took the hole shot in the Elite men's semi. Going into the first turn, he bumped bars with another rider as he was going up a jump and this caused him be throw into the bottom of turn one. Brandon suffered a broken femur and had to have surgery just hours after the crash. I spoke with Brandon on Thursday night after the surgery and he was doing ok and wanted to thank all that had made it by the hospital and called to wish him well. Brandon will be back in top form after this tragic injury, and once again winning Pro main events. Brandon's sponsors include: Specialized, Fly Racing, Tangent, Thomson, Shimano, Cyto Max, Sun Ringle, Tool Shed, Powerbar, IGIO, and BMXpros.com

Double A Marketing proudly represents Cristian Becerine, Kyle Bennett, Dale Holmes, Christophe Leveque, Brandon Meadows, and Randy Stumpfhauser. For more information on any of the riders, or on Double A Marketing visit www.BMXpros.com
