Hey Vans How About A Go BMXing Day?
So Vans are presenting “Go Skateboarding Day Melbourne 2015!” according to a Vans email newsletter I received today. Well done Vans, it’s awesome that you get behind a sport and culture you are so clearly very much a part of.
I can’t help thinking though, what about a “Go BMXing Day”?
Sure Vans are considered a “skate shoe” but right through the 70’s to the 90’s Vans were considered the shoe to wear for any BMXer, racing, riding or casual they were very much a part of the BMX culture. For some of us nothing has changed. A good percentage of BMX racers now choose to wear “clipless” shoes for racing and it’s been that way since 1998. It’s not uncommon however to see those riders slip into Vans when racing is done. It’s a testament to how much they really are still a very big part of the BMX scene.
It’s not like Vans have completely forgotten their BMX connection.
- The ties are mentioned in the book Vans: Off the Wall.
- There have been numerous reproductions and collaborations over the years. More recently the “Rad” reproduction and the Haro collaboration shoes.
- Vans have produced many shoes for BMX that have been popular during the clipless era of BMX. There’s the Vans Warner and even the Gravels for the flat pedal racer.
Ok, so getting back to my point, wouldn’t it be nice to see a “Go BMXing Day” to encourage people to head out on their BMX bikes and cruise around, hit up a track, shred the trails or a pump track, anything to get more bums on bikes. It would make it even more special if some one like Vans could get on board and help promote the heck out of it.
What do you say my fellow BMXers? Should we start pushing for a “Go BMXing Day”?
