Rio 2016 Olympics: Men’s Quarter Finals
The Olympic BMX Centre took it’s toll on the Men’s field today when the Quarter Finals hit the big stage. BMX has become more well known in mainstream media for it’s spectacular crashes at the past two Olympic games than anything else, and the Quarter Finals at Rio didn’t disappoint.
BMX is an unpredictable sport at the best of times, it’s not unusual for big name riders to be eliminated early. When some of the finals favourites like Liam Phillips, Joris Daudet and Maris Strombergs crash out early it really changes the landscape.
As a BMX fan I would have liked to see if Maris Strombergs could have gone on to win his third medal and become not only the legend he is in BMX but an international household name as an Olympian, a possible Usain Bolt of BMX racing. But on the flipside of that it will be just as exciting to see a new Gold Medalist crowned.
No doubt there will be more heartbreak as the racing unfolds tomorrow, but I wouldn’t miss a single minute of it.
Here’s how the quarter finals went down.
