31/08 2009 Vic State Championship Format and Champbikx and Probikx Round

by Wayne Berryman
– BMX Victoria President

This year will see the National Champbikx and Probikx series return to Victoria for the first time since January 2008.  The board at BMX Victoria is extremely excited about having this high class racing series back in Victoria and it gives our home riders the chance to compete on a National stage in their home state.  Not only do we have the second round of the 2009/2010 series at the Victorian Open BMX Championships in November we will also have the final round in May when Shepparton hosts the 2010 National BMX Championships.

With the steady increase in rider numbers over the past year at the Victoria Open BMX Championships and the addition of the Champbikx/Probikx round to this 2 day event, we have found it necessary to change this year’s format.  Pushing in excess of 850 entries through a complete State Championships in a day and half is going to place enormous pressure onto the organizers and the officials and we have decided, through the EMG, that we will this year go with a Nationals style format and only have 3 motos per class plus finals.  This is a huge change to our normal format but with the Nationals in our state next year we feel that it will give riders participating in next year’s Shepparton Nationals the opportunity to ride a national’s style of event.

This format is not cast in stone as to being the way the Victorian Open BMX Championships will be run in the years to come.  As we do every year we will review the race meeting through the EMG at its completion.  Remember all BMXV club members can attend the EMG meetings.

The 2009 Victorian Open BMX Championships in November will be the start of one of the hottest 6 months of BMX racing Victoria has ever seen.  Track Attack in January is shaping up as one of the biggest, The Northern Rivers series this year was one of its biggest and will be bigger again next year. In Easter Shepparton BMX club will host a two day event at the Nationals Track.  And in May the big one the 2010 National Titles.

If anyone wants any further information on the above or has any other issues they are wanting to discuss, please feel free to give me a call on 0429 605 356.

28/08 Photos: Ausbike Australia. Australian Bike Trade Expo

by bmxultra.com

On August 16 we headed down to the Melbourne Show Grounds to check out Ausbike Australia. It’s been a little while since the Australian bike industry has had a big trade show so Ausbike was pretty big and surprising that there was so much BMX gear on display. There probably wasn’t a whole lot of race specific product that you wouldn’t have already seen so we have taken some more generic photos that would still be of interest like street helmets, leatt braces, etc.

We checked out a whole lot of booths including ECI, Black Phoenix Films/VAS Entertainment, Trickbits, Advance Traders, Jet Black, and a bunch of others.

A couple of stand outs where the Cannibal stand which does some pretty cool custom jerseys from design to production, they have started to do custom printed shorts too. We also checked out the Black Phoenix Films/VAS Entertainment stand who we hear are going to be bringing in the “Stompin’ Stu” DVDs amongst a bunch of others, they are also the Australian distributor for VHoldR Contour HD wearable cam corders, these puppys are loaded with features and a great buy at only $525. There were a bunch of nice looking street helmets from Nutcase too. We can’t forget to mention ECI, their booth was chockablock full of goodies, as per usual.

25/08 BSX2010 – we need your help

by bmxultra.com

BSX, a Royal Children’s Hospital fund raiser, it will be on again on Monday 18 January 2010.
It will be the fifth running of the one on one backyard BMX race.

Track

We have big plans for track changes over the coming months, if you are able to help swing a shovel, drive a bobcat or just help ride the track and roll the new changes in then keep an eye out for up coming working bees.

Volunteers needed

We will also need some new volunteers for administration leading up to the event as well as running the event on the day. Jobs include parking attendants, ticket sales on the gate, taking entries, selling raffle tickets, manning the silent auctions, track maintenance and so on.

Riders

We have already had verbal confirmation that Aussie BMX legend and Olympian Luke Madill
is planning on coming. If you are interested in the event drop us an email webmaster@bmxultra.com to help us determine how many riders to expect, we would need to know what class you would like to ride (Open men, Open women or 30 & Over Open wheel) where you are from (City/State) and your name. Generally we end up with 32 riders in the Open mens class, about 12 in the 30 & Over open wheel and 2-4 Open women. But there is plenty of room for more.

Partnership opportunities

If you would like to be involved in BSX2010 we will have partnership packages available soon, email webmaster@bmxultra.com for details. Basically we are looking for donations or products for auctions/raffles. 100% of profits raised will go directly to the Royal Children’s Hospital.

BSX is presented by bmxultra.com and proudly supported by

Gold Partner

About BSX

BSX (Bicycle Supercross) is one-on-one sprint trails style racing on a backyard track built specifically to test a rider’s skills. The short straights, lofty jumps and tight corners are very intense under race conditions but also fun for competitors and create quite a lot of entertainment for spectators. The event provides a unique experience for the local Victorian riders, as well as the interstate and international visitors during an off day of the Track Attack series. The events primary function is to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation. In just four years the event has raised approximately $15,000 which has provided the hospital with new equipment. Funds have been raised through gate takings, raffles, auctions and donations.

About the Royal Children’s Hospital

‘The Royal Children’s Hospital is the major specialist paediatric hospital in Victoria and provides a full range of clinical services and health promotion and prevention programs for infants through to adolescents. Each year the Royal Children’s Hospital treats tens of thousands of children through our Emergency Department, inpatient admissions and outpatient visits. The Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation plays a vital role in providing additional funding to support important research projects and purchase state of the art medical equipment to ensure that every child receives the very best treatment now and into the future.

24/08 Willoughby and Walker win World Cup

by SEAN BADENHORST -Fresh Media Solutions/SHARON PAYNE – Bike Media

SOUTH AFRICA: Two time BMX World Junior Champion, Sam Willoughby from Australia, continued his meteoric rise to fame after winning the second round of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup, presented by Swatch in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa on Saturday.

The current elite men’s World Champion and World ranked number one rider, Donny Robinson from the USA placed second with Rob van den Wildenberg of the Netherlands in third.

Willoughby made history last month by be the first rider to claim back-to-back junior world titles in front of his home crowd and did not disappoint again today by winning every heat plus his quarterfinal and semifinal.

In the final, 18 year old Willoughby started in the favoured inside lane, with Robinson on his left in lane two. Willoughby’s powerful start gave him the edge and this secured the all-important holeshot into the first turn.

A bike-length gap opened up and Willoughby kept his lead into the technical third straight. Willoughby gave his signature one arm up salute across the finish line to claim his first ever Supercross World Cup win.

“I’m really excited with this win! It’s the right end to a perfect day I guess,” said the charismatic Willoughby. “I had lane two in my first heat, but won that and held lane one for the rest of the day which proved decisive.”

It was exciting to win the junior(world championships),” explained Willoughby, “but it’s all about the men’s race. This is the real business now.”

Robinson was full of praise for Willoughby but felt that the inside lane was undoubtedly a factor in the final result.

“Sam is improving all the time. He’s a real talent and so consistent. I would have loved to have had lane one for the final, but he made the most of it and he never made a single mistake. I planned to run at him in the third straight, but he was flawless through there.”

Van den Wildenberg claimed third making it his first ever podium in a World Cup.

In the elite women’s race it was a clean sweep for newly crowned World Champion, Sarah Walker from New Zealand. The 21 year old Olympian was a hot favourite after qualifying fastest on Friday but a hand injury during practice put her in doubt during the day.

“It feels really good to get a World Cup win so soon after winning the World Championships,” she said. “I have definitely developed a lot of confidence lately and it’s showing in my results.”

“I took it a bit easy in the semifinal motos because I didn’t want to risk doing something silly and not making the final. But in the final I let it all out and I had a really good race,” smiled Walker, who had crashed during practice.

Walker recovered enough to win comfortably ahead of Maria Gabriela Diaz from Argentina in second. French rider Eva Ailloud claimed third. The best placed Australian was Rachel Bracken who crashed in the final but rode across the line to place sixth.

An enthusiastic crowd watched the first elite BMX race of its kind in Africa which is a precursor to the 2010 UCI BMX World Championships, which will also be held in Pietermaritzburg next July.

20/08 2010 UCI BMX Permanent Career numbers assigned

UCI BMX press release

UCI is pleased to announce the 2010 permanent career numbers for Elite Men and Elite Women. These numbers must be used at all international BMX events for the 2009-2010 season.

In 2006, the UCI introduced the permanent BMX number system for Elite Men and Elite Women. With this system, riders can choose a “career number”, which they have the exclusive right to use for their entire Elite class career. This will give riders a possibility to market themselves and to give media and spectators an easy way to identify riders.

This has proven to be very successful, where top athletes now have been established numbers. Riders like #77 Robert De Wilde (NED) and #365  Mike Day (USA) are certainly nowadays always easy identified with their numbers.

In addition, the number 1-8 is reserved for the finalists of the 2009 UCI BMX World Championships, where Donny Robinson (USA) will display the #1 on the back of the rainbow jersey, while Sarah Walker (NZL) will stick to her familiar # 96.

To view the complete list of permanent numbers, see link or attachment: http://www.uci.ch/templates/UCI/UCI1/layout.asp?MenuId=MTU0NTU&LangId=2

12/08 One Bicycles Australia press release

Justin Beattie’s world title experience Adelaide 2009

by Jim Beattie

On Friday 17th of August CheekyBoy (Justrin), his Mum ,Dad, sisters  Brianna, Emily and Grandmother jumped in the family’s new Van and drove to Adelaide to compete in the 2009 UCI BMX world titles. Mum had booked a decommissioned railway station which we shared with my parents and our friends the Elliott’s and which had been fitted out for accommodation. This was great fun with trains rolling past at all hours and blowing their horns whenever the kids were near the platform fence.

Justin had been in near constant training since the new year with his coach Adam Carey. 8 months of sub-zero temp morning track and sprint sessions. Of learning that you can train on a muddy track if it is minus 6 deg. and frozen solid,. Of travelling all over NSW most weekends looking for a race. Of dozens of clubbies and opens. Of ACT and Australian titles. In that time he has won the XBR summer series, the NSW southern region Series, got a forth at the ACT titles (injured in a fall) and won the Australian title in Perth. He is also the current NSW and Victorian champion. It’s been a big 8 months.

Justin, like most people, got his first sight of the track on Tuesday  We looked at it together and soon realised that the first Jump was simple. Whichever 10 Year old who didn’t jump the 8.5m monster would loose…..Simple. He lined up and rolled around his 1st lap. Nearly pulled himself over backwards jumping the first jump on the 2nd lap. Cleared the first jump nicely on the 3rd lap, and on the 4th lap landed the first ok and promptly catapulted himself over the handlebars due to a set of snapped forks. It was his last lap for the day anyway. On Wednesday he got a new set of forks, some bandaids, and this time 5 laps  of the track. He had also mapped the first jump. He got a total of 9 practice laps (and that was allot compared to some Aussies ) and I lost count of how many laps some of the other countries riders were lucky enough to get.

Thursday was race day and saw him get a hot draw with everyone in his heat owning either a national or world plate. Justin won the first 2 motos without any real dramas but in the third found himself boxed in after a poor start and was in second. Predictably he fell off in the last corner after taking a low line, challenging for the lead and a result he just didn’t need. This time a bruised knee and sore shoulder to add to this growing injury list. You get that when you race with your heart and not your head. He was hurt but had made it through to the quarters which he ended up winning. He got a very safe third in the semis and drew lane seven for the final.

In the final he got boxed in after another poor start and found himself without the room to wind up and having to jump locked up with a South African rider. He came out of the first corner in last spot by 2 bike lengths. Justin at that point decided to arc up. I asked him later about how he felt at this point and he said. “it was my one shot”. He then used the next two straights to pull back four spots and challenged for third in the last straight and missed out by a couple of inches. He came 4th.

As a parent you take your kids to events like these for the experience and to see how they rate against their contemporaries. At times CheekyBoy was hurt, tired and scared. Yet at no point did he fail to hit that first straight as hard as he could even though he was jumping with overlapping riders zones and landing interlocked with other riders. He knew there was a huge chance that he would fall  heavily but went anyway and I think it was because he didn’t want to miss his chance or let anyone down. When he was behind he never gave up. As his Dad I’m far more pleased with the personal qualities that support his backbone than with his skill on a bike or his excellent result. I certainly didn’t jump and was promptly ridden of the motos as a result. He rates in the very top few riders in his class and with a bit more luck the result could have been very different.

Justin had a massive amount of fun, he got to meet his heroes and his sponsors and he got to race against the best 10 year olds in the world.

CheekyBoy would like to thank the following in no particular order.      His coach Adam Carey, for getting out of bed and always being positive, even at minus 6.  Shane Jenkins,  Miekel Rose and family for welcoming him onto the ONE Bicycles grass roots team, and for their help and advice.  ECI for his new very cool ONE frame and helping out with replacing his snapped forks. Grandma for not fainting after the final for a change. Mum and Dad for putting a DVD player in the new van.  All the guys he races and trains with.

10/08 Supercross Racerhead FL Stem

Supercross BMX Racerhead FL StemSupercross BMX press release

The new Racerhead FL came to be by a round table discussion in the shop one night. Kris and Mikey ride park and trails as much as they ride the race
tracks and wanted a cool front load stem to slap on to their new Passion
frames. So we sat down sketched something up, took it to the machine shop
and made a sample, it was close, but we wanted it to be a little sleeker,
and a little lighter, so we refined it down three more times to get what we
wanted. Then we slapped them onto Kris and Mikey’s personal trail bikes and
let them have at it. After a few months of testing and making sure it was
what they wanted we put it into production and what you see today is the
final result.

A superlight 9 ounce piece of carved and whittled 6061 Aluminum billet. ( 9
ounces includes all 6 Grade 8 Allen Bolts )

The Racerhead FL is available in 2 sizes the 53mm ( 9.0 ounces ) and soon a
48mm for the smaller riders that will be even lighter.

Available in Black, Red, Teal and Purple at your favorite local
Supercross BMX dealer.

05/08 One Bicycles Australia Update

One Bicycles Australia press release

Here’s an update of how Mikayla from the ACT enjoyed the world championships experience..

by Miekel Rose

Mikayla and Maris StrombergsMikayla and I drove down to Adelaide with her Cruiser and 20″ in the back of the car to compete at this year’s BMX World Championships. For the two months leading up to the event Mikayla had been training hard and was looking good for her quest at the Worlds. Her Coach Craig Fisher was also there for her at the event as he was racing Cruiser (eventually claiming W1 in 40-44 Men). Mikayla practiced well, but was struggling with what to do at the first jump on the first straight. She attempted to jump it but was a little short, she struggled pumping it as it was launching her, so her tactic was to pedal hard, grab a small amount of brake at the last moment and ride through it.

When it came to race day, Craig showed me her draw in the 9 Girls. She had a tough block getting Australia 1,2,3, USA 1 and NZ 1 in her heat. I was a little disappointed for her as this made it extra tough. She rode well through the heats and only managed a 5th and 6ths, not enough to progress to the semis. It was good to see her mixing it up with the girls she raced at the Aussies and the ground she had gained on them, but sad she had such a tough draw. She had fun and came away with a smile and that is what counts.

Sunday she raced Cruiser in the 12 and under Girls division. As Mikayla is still only 8 I didn’t expect too much, just wanted her to have fun. On the Saturday the day before we went for a practice ride at the Happy Valley Track and Mikayla had a ball, jumping and playing on the very flowing track there. On the Sunday she raced hard mixing it up with the big girls and came away with two sixth places. I went and spoke to her and said to have fun in the last race as she couldn’t make it through. She had a fun race and gave us all a wave over the finish line rolling in 8th place.

What an experience, our first World titles. The highlight for her was getting a photo with the 2008 World Champion, Olympic Gold Medalist and ex ONE Team rider Maris Strombergs. Maris was kind enough to sign her ONE Australia Team Jersey and pose for a photo with her. The Jersey and photo are now framed and take pride of place in the lounge room at home.

Unfortunately her two brothers Nikalus and Joshua did not ride or travel to the event with us due to the large cost involved and they missed qualification by the smallest of margins. I was disappointed they missed such an awesome experience, but hope it drives them to train harder in an attempt to qualify to race for Australia at a World Titles in the future.

Training starts again next week in a lead up to the NSW Titles being held in Maitland. Mikayla, Nik and Josh are looking forward to some good results and hope to report on a great event at its conclusion.

04/08 Photos: UCI World Championships and Randy Stumphauser/GHP Clinic

by bmxultra.com

During the week of the world championships in Adelaide last month we took a bunch of photos, first of the Randy Stumphauser/GHP clinic at The Cove BMX track, then at the indoor worlds venue. There are so few indoor events in Australia that we haven’t bothered to buy the equipment to take good indoor shots, besides we aren’t allowed in the track area because of some BS policy about requiring insurance. (We are good enough to send press releases and announcements all year but not take photos at Aussies and Worlds? Whatever!) So we have tried to get some photos for you but weren’t all that happy with them. Since some of you have been asking I decided to put them up. We like some of the arty ones that show lots of movement but it’s probably not the style of photo you guys are looking for. We took photos from the first two days of practice and the first day of racing with the Junior Challenge classes, but had to focus on racing after that.

03/08 NBL Bring-A-Buddy Program – June results announced

NBL press release

– Cape Coral BMX, FL the top recruiting track / Jeffrey Heath of Central Jersey BMX, NJ the top recruiter

NBL membership continues grow and the Bring-A-Buddy Program is attracting hundreds of new members each month.  With more than $40,000 in prizes to be won, NBL tracks and members have been actively promoting the program and there are lots of new names, and tracks, at the top of the point standings.  Bring-A-Buddy played a key role in boosting the sport’s profile during the Olympic year and the trend continues well into 2009 – That’s good news for the sport and ultimately, for local racing programs around the country. The month of June was a big one for the program this year!

Jeffrey Heath of Central Jersey BMX, NJ is the top recruiter for June with 2,500 points and if he continues on this pace, he could be selecting from a number of cool awards including a chance to choose between a Supercross Bolt LT frame or Intense Podium frame, each worth 3,800 pts.  Cassidy Ellis of Maryland is close behind with 2,400 and Jakob Cavalli of Santa Barbara BMX in California is third with 2,300.  View the complete stats on the NBL website.

NBL tracks are also a key part of the program and the top recruiting tracks for each reward period win sponsor products. The top recruiting track for the month of June is Cape Coral BMX in Florida. The top recruiting track from each region receives a free complete bike and recognition in BMX Today Magazine for their efforts. “Several different tracks have emerged as top recruiters this year and that tells us that the program is being promoted more than ever” said Ken Masters, NBL President. “It’s the best year for recruiting to date and this will help local programs around the country”. The top recruiting tracks by region are:

Top Recruiting Tracks by Region for June

  • ·         Midwest – Grand Rapids BMX, MI
  • ·         Northeast – Wakefield BMX, MA
  • ·         Southeast – Cape Coral BMX, FL
  • ·         West – Santa Maria BMX, CA

Visit the NBL website at www.nbl.org for more details and click on the Bring A Buddy banner to view full standings and the rewards catalog.

The 2009 NBL Bring-A-Buddy Program is proudly sponsored by Intense BMX (www.intensebmx.com), Supercross BMX (www.supercrossbmx.com), Kenda Tires (www.kendausa.com), UGP (www.undergroundproducts.com) Sinz Racing (www.sinz-racing.com), THE Industries (www.bmxthe.com), and Camp Woodward (www.campwoodward.com) in association with BMXWORLD, BMX Plus! and BMX Today magazines.

About NBL Bring-A-Buddy

The program is simple and offers an exciting, points-driven, incentive platform that rewards NBL members for their efforts. In the April and May issues of BMX Today magazine, members received a full sheet of ‘Buddy’ cards and were tasked to distribute them to any ‘buddies’ who might be interested in trying BMX for the first time. When any ‘Buddy’ redeems a card at a local NBL BMX track, both the recruiter and the ‘Buddy’ win a free ‘limited-edition’ NBL sticker kit.  Recruiters receive 100 points for every ‘Buddy’ who redeems a card and when the ’Buddy’ joins as a full NBL member, the recruiter pockets an additional 300 bonus points. To further support super-active recruiters, additional cards and supplies are available at local NBL tracks.
