Product Spotlight: Torker Uni-MAX Pivotal Retro BMX Seat

Torker are about to release the Torker Uni-MAX Pivotal Retro BMX Seat. A new spin on a 70’s Uni Seat classic. I love it when manufacturer’s put a modern twist on some old BMX classics.

I love that Torker have made this a pivotal solution, which means it will fit to any pivotal seat post and any of the issues of the original are eliminated. It’s also great to see a padded version, those of us who used hard plastic seats through the 80’s and 90’s have earned the right to some comfort.

The Original Uni seat

The Uni seat was one of the most popular BMX seats in racing through the early 80’s. They were a super light weight seat post & seat combo.  The seat was molded from a tough nylon and from memory bonded to a fiberglass post. Sure it was more about a light weight seat for racing than it was about a functional seat. Over time the ribs molded under the seats would stress out and breakages weren’t uncommon.

Through BMX history the Uni seat has been copied over and over and can still be seen in various forms under different brands.

A little trivial for you. In 2008 when BMX racing debuted at the Olympics Uni had launched a new seat with big contingency money on the line. While there were a few riders using them, including Australia’s Luke Madill, it was Donny Robinson who took his to a bronze medal result.
