Pride Racing Newton SX Pro BMX Cranks Review

Pride Racing have released some great BMX specific cranks over the past years but they went next level with the Pride Newton SX cranks.  The Newton is a high performance crank built from the ground up with the worlds best riders in mind. The Newton’s are light, stiff and durable.

Sure, on the surface, they have the familiar look of two piece alloy cranks, with double pinch bolts on the non-drive side, but they have some additional cool features.

Let’s take a look at the features

  • Two-piece 7000 series forged and CNC machined aluminium
  • 24mm cromo 48 spline spindle
  • Five sizes: 170mm, 172.5mm, 175mm, 177.5mm, 180mm
  • At 168mm it has a Narrower Q Factor than Shimano DXR and Profile Elite AL cranks, both at 173mm

Cool features

  • Integrated chainring bolt system gives you all the benefits of a threaded chainring but without the additional cost. It’s worth noting that these cranks won’t work with threaded chainrings
  • The 175mm version of the cranks weighs just 738 grams – they do have a rider weight limit of 120kgs, which covers at least 99% of serious BMX racers

First Impressions

The cranks look tough, built to impress, nice clean and smooth surfaces anodised black with subtle etched branding.  Then there’s the back of the crank arms, the exposed waffle that provides the crank arm it’s strength and stiffness but cutting enough material away to make them increadibly light weight.

The spider is their biggest cosmetic difference to regular cranks two piece cranks. Rather than bolt holes straight through the spider, for your regular two-piece chainring bolts, they have an integrated thread so you bolt the chainring directly to the back side of the spider. You get all the benefits of a threaded chainring using standard chainrings.

Manufacturer’s Description

In BMX racing, every detail counts. From the first pedal stroke to the finish line, power, precision, and reliability make the difference between victory and defeat. The Pride Newton SX crankset was designed with one goal in mind: to maximize performance without compromise. Developed with advanced engineering and designed for the demands of elite racers, this crankset is the perfect blend of robustness, efficiency, and innovation.

Designed for those who push their limits, the Newton SX offers the responsiveness and durability needed to dominate the track. The Newton SX crankset is the result of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) , a cutting-edge engineering process that simulates real-world forces and stress distribution to fine-tune every aspect of the design. This ensures unparalleled performance in BMX racing, where every watt of power counts.

  • Minimize unnecessary weight while maintaining extreme rigidity.
  • Reduce lateral flex for a more efficient and responsive pedaling experience.
  • To ensure impact resistance under the most demanding BMX conditions.

The result? A crankset that maximizes power output, reduces flex, and delivers explosive performance from the starting gate to the finish line. The Newton SX is forged from a high-performance 7-series aluminum alloy , ensuring exceptional strength and stiffness, far exceeding what conventional cranksets offer.

  • Increased rigidity for better power transfer; less flex means more energy is converted into forward motion.
  • Enhanced durability and impact resistance, designed to withstand high-intensity racing and extreme landings.
  • Optimizing production stability, our waffle design guarantees consistent wall thickness, superior strength, and improved manufacturing precision.

Unlike hollow forged cranksets, which can conceal internal weaknesses, the waffle forging process offers better control over thickness and structural integrity, making the Newton SX more reliable and stable over time. The Newton SX features an integrated chainring bolt system , eliminating the need for separate bolts and combining simplicity with rigidity.

  • Quick and easy crown changes thanks to the integrated screw system. No more hassle choosing the screw length.
  • Increased rigidity? The integrated design reduces weak points, making the entire drivetrain more rigid, ensuring better power transfer and greater durability. The Newton SX is designed with a Q-factor of 168 mm, the optimal position for BMX racing.
  • Perfect position for maximum power output and stability.
  • Optimized pedaling position for smoother and stronger acceleration.
  • With a Q-factor of 168 mm , it offers the ideal width for BMX riders, balancing stability and efficiency with every pedal stroke. Weighing in at just 738g in the 175 mm version, the Newton SX is among the lightest BMX cranksets on the market.

Notes: The crankset comes with 1 compression bolt, 2 locking bolts, and 4 chainring bolts.

The Weight

The 175mm Pride Newton SX cranks weigh just 738 grams. For comparison, the alloy Shimano DXR cranks weigh in at 969.6 grams. That’s going to keep the weight weenies happy.

How easy are they to install?

The 24mm spindle has been around for a while now, it’s the most common spindle today, with a massive range of bottom bracket options. I paired the Newton cranks with Pride Racing EB24 sealed bottom bracket. There are no real tricks to installing the Newton cranks the process is very straight forward. Install the chainring with the chainring bolts supplied, slide the spindle through the BB, attach the non-drive arm, tighen up your spindle bolt and the pinch bolts and away you go. Since the cranks are made specifically for BMX racing chain alignment should be spot on straight out of the box. Also you don’t need pedal washers like you would with most alloy cranks.

How do they ride?

I’ve been using the cranks for months now, doing sprints and riding on the track and they have to be the some of the stiffest cranks I have ever used. There aren’t too many alloy cranks on the market that feel this stiff.

How about the price?

At $700 Aussie they are priced very well for a high end crank made for the best in the business.

Q Factor

The narrower Q Factor of the Newton cranks is “optimal for BMX racing”. I guess that’s fine for the average sized BMX racer but when you’re 6’2″ and built like a gorilla with child bearing hips and have a natural wide stance and you’re set in your ways after four plus decades of BMX racing you just move your feet a little wider on the pedal to allow for it. But it is great to have a narrower stance for those looking for it.

Final words

For a company that went out of their way and invested time and effort to build the ultimate alloy race crank they really hit the mark.

  • Light? Check!
  • Stiff? Check!
  • Durable? Check!

I love products that are set and forget, something you can rely on and not have to worry about coming loose and letting you down.

I strongly recommend the Pride Newton SX cranks, in fact we hear that the Inspyre factory team will be running these cranks exclusively.

Oh, and if you are looking for shorter cranks, you’re in luck, Pride have the Newton SX cranks in a Junior version available in 150, 155, 160, 165, and 167.5mm.

  • The Pride Racing Newton SX cranks are among the lightest cranks in their class
  • Stiff, stong and light, I don’t think you could ask for more
  • I like the slick clean look of the Newton cranks, and the way they are constructed inspires confidence.
