Australian BMX Team for 2014 UCI BMX World Championships announced
World number one Caroline Buchanan and Olympic silver medallist Sam Willoughby will headline BMX Australia’s 23-member Championship Class team for the 2014 UCI BMX World Championships in Rotterdam from 22 – 27 July, 2014.
Joining Buchanan and Willoughby in the team is another of Australia’s 2012 London Olympians, Lauren Reynolds, and rising stars Josh Callan, Anthony Dean, Bodi Turner and Melinda McLeod.
Buchanan, the current world, Oceania and national champion will be looking to defend her title in Rotterdam while Willoughby, the Olympic silver medallist, will be out to regain his world championship title after being taken out in the quarter finals last year. Reynolds, having returned to racing at the start of the year following an injury that prematurely ended her 2013 season, will be keen to make her mark at the World Championships and defend her world number 2 plate.
Willoughby, Dean, Callan and Reynolds automatically qualified for the World Championships with their UCI international rankings from 2013 in the UCI BMX Supercross (SX) World Cup Series and the domestic BMX National Series.
BMX Australia President and selector Barry Knight said the team for Rotterdam was full of class and experience.
“We are delighted to put forward such a strong Championship Class team for the 2014 World Championships” Knight said.
“With Australian riders doing so well on the international level at the moment and raising the standards of competition domestically, we are confident that we have selected the best riders to challenge for World Championship plates in all classes.”
Several members of the team are already in Europe readying for the championships, whilst others are training at bases in the USA and Australia, where Buchanan, the current SX World Cup Series leader, is preparing in Canberra.
