The bmxultra.com team was in action at the WA State Championships on the weekend of October 3-5 with Matt Butterworth representing One Bicycles.

Matt was racing in the 40+ cruiser class as defending state champion on Saturday and had some very stiff competition from several riders transitioning from the 35-39 class the previous year. Indeed the class contained 27 entries and no less than four national plate holders from Shepparton. Matt comfortably qualified out of the motos with a 1-4-2-2 and into the semifinal. A fourth place finish was enough to make the main event. The final was rather disappointing with an average start and first straight resulting in Matt being boxed in going in into the first turn.  Momentum is hard to pull back in a final and once the dust had settled, Matt took home the 8^th place for 2014, behind winner Wes Hill, Wayne Green and Michael Harper respectively on the podium.

Day 2 was a new day, a fresh opportunity for redemption in the ultra-competitive 40-49 Men and Matt was looking to improve from a disappointing Day 1. The class once again had 27 entries and semifinals.  A 2-1-4-2 in the motos and a 2^nd in the semifinal had Matt with lane two for the main. When the gate dropped Matt was in the mix in the 3 spot when holeshot leader Wes Hill pulled a clip going into turn one and could not re-engage quick enough. Matt avoided the slowing rider and slotted into second behind Adam Richards for the remainder of the lap. This was at least until turn 3  where Wayne Green slid underneath  and pulled away leaving Matt to fight for 3^rd place at the line by just under half a second.

This was Matt’s 15^th State Championships and 3^rd place in the 40-49 Men took Matt’s overall podium finishes in all classes to 16. It would be one of the hardest titles in years in terms of rider quality and Matt now shifts the focus to the last WA Super Series event for 2014 at Bunbury on November 1^st.
