Let’s Start a Go BMXing Day
A couple of weeks ago I suggested a Go BMXing Day just like the Vans presented Go Skateboarding Day except, clearly, for BMXers. I’m all for celebrations, I celebrate my ability to ride a bike every chance I get. After a couple of emails from others willing to organise something similar in different states it got me thinking “why can’t we just organise a non-official thing”. There’s no reason it has to be presented by anyone, no reason for corporates to get behind it, it just needs people to turn up and ride their bikes and show their appreciation and love of BMXing.
I also started to think that the only official birthday of BMX is recognised by the County of Los Angeles for Scot Breithaupt organising the first ever BMX race, which was held way back on November 14, 1970. So I thought how cool would it be to organise it on the 45th Birthday of the sport, which just so happens to be on a Saturday this year. I’ve checked the racing calendar for the state and there’s a race in Melbourne on the Sunday, at South Eastern, incidently one of the most history rich clubs in the state and probably the country.
So given there’s no clash with any race event Saturday November 14 seems ideal. Now getting tracks and clubs involved can open a political can of worms, so I would suggest it’s run in a central location that’s family friendly. Something like Kensington (JJ Holland Park,Kensington Rd & Childers St, Kensington), that has some safe dirt jumps a pump track and a skate park. It has toilets, parking, park benches and is close to a train station, so it seems like an ideal location. I would suggest a ride session from 10am until 1pm, which would allow plenty of time to ride and there’s still plenty of time for people to get to South Eastern for a gate session, or for people to enjoy the attractions around Melbourne city.
So what do you say my BMXing brothers and sisters? Lets’ start something big.
