Product Spotlight: Hustle Bike Labs Magnetic Pedals.

If you checked out the ORBO.com.au tent at the Australian BMX Championships at Macarthur, chances are you saw the Hustle Bike Labs magnetic pedals. Officially known as the Hustle Bike Labs Avery REMtech pedals, but in short it’s a high end platform pedal with two double sided magnets that pair with REMplates, that are compatible with standard 2-bolt cycling shoes, to keep your shoes connected to the pedal.

We’re not about to tell you that the Hustle Bike Labs magnetic pedals are about to set the BMX racing scene on it’s head, it won’t, and for a number of reasons, including the price being a little inhibitive. But they are a great alternative to what’s currently available.

The magnets that come with the pedals are very strong. It was fun watching people struggle to separate the shoe from the pedal by hand. Obviously it’s much easier when you have the shoe on your foot. The magnetic system has it’s advantages. The most obvious is that it’s quicker to disconnect, and unlike traditional cleat systems there’s a number of ways to do so.  “Any movement that applies enough pressure will disengage your foot. Since REMmagnets hold most strongly in the vertical direction, twisting, sliding, or angling your foot releases more smoothly than pulling straight up. Unlike clipless pedals, no single, rigid movement is required.” It’s also worth knowing “the pedals allow for a lot of float. Unlike clipless pedals, your foot can rotate freely without weakening the magnetic grip.”

It’s a nifty idea and definitely worth checking out.
