ODI Vanquish V2.1 Lock On Grips Review

ODI Grips are the leader in grip manufacturing in the action sports industry, based out of California USA, their products are well known for quality, comfort and durablility. The ODI Vanquish lock-on grip is the latest offering from ODI. It’s the result of a collaboration with D30, who manufacture innovative protection against vibration and impact in a wide range of industries. The pairing allowed ODI to build a grip from the ground up based around the properties and the idendity of the D30 products. It’s an entirely new grip pattern that provides 2 x more vibration dampening. Perfect for mountain biking, which it was designed for, but also highly relevant for modern BMX racing with hard packed and well groomed surfaces.

It fits perfectly in the massive ODI line up. It’s a softer grip with mid sized diameter, but offers greater vibration dampening than ever before.

If you’re like me with a bigger hand and you like the feeling of the Ruffian grip the Vanquish won’t be for you. That said, for the average sized hand, if you are looking for something that provides a little more comfort, something that’s a little softer with a little more diameter, it will definitely be worth a look.

We spoke with Johnny from ODI late last year and he gave us a brief run down of the Vanquish grips. Check it out in this video.

Pros & Cons of the Vanquish V2.1

Pros

  • 2 x more vibration dampening
  • Double reinforced ends
  • 7 Colour options

Cons

  • The D30 material has a different feel to the normal ODI compound

Fitting ODI Vanquish grips

My go-to ODI grip is the Rogue, it is one of the biggest grips that ODI has to offer. The pattern is repeated the same over the grip so you can position the grip any way you like. I position the bolts away from my fingers and thumbs, with the clamp locking towards the front.

You can’t do that with the Vanquish grip. You can’t just throw them on lock them up and hit the track. To get the best out of them make sure you put the grips on the designated sides. There are indicators inside the logos on the ends of the grips. Before tightening the locks stand over the bike and grip the hand grips in race stance, palm over the center of the top waffle and fingers locked into the grooves at the bottom. You might have to rotate the grips to get them in the perfect position before locking them into position. The grips should be very comfortable when installed correctly, they will feel a little odd if they aren’t.

So they look great, but how do they feel?

With different grip patterns on the top and the bottom the Vanquish grip does feel a little different. It’s comfortable with extra padding in the palm, where you need it, but thinner in the finger slots. They did start to feel natural in no time. The D30 material doesn’t feel the same as ODI’s regular material, it has a slicker surface which I find feel better in gloves than bare hands.

I like the micro flange, it keeps your hand clear of the lock clamp maximising comfort.

Final Words

The ODI Vanquish V2.1 Lock On is a more comfortable grip for those looking for a little more from the more traditional offerings from ODI, like the Ruffian, CF, Vans, and the AG’s.

They are perfect if you are looking for a mid diameter grip to make your ride smoother and more enjoyable, especially those of you who have gone all carbon and looking to smooth out the ride somewhat.

I would love to see an XL version of the Vanquish with a bigger diameter so I can enjoy the grip as much as you will.

Comments

  • The Vanquish grips are a little more expensive than most ODI grips, think along the lines of the CF grip, but they have more to offer, especially if you are looking to smooth out your ride
  • When it comes to weight, the Vanquish is quite reasonable, similar to the others in it’s class. When it comes to grips, weight is not something that would trump comfort
  • There’s nothing quite like a set and forget grip. Come to think of it, there’s nothing like an ODI grip. It’s a safe bet – you get quality, comfort, and durablilty. Everything you would want from a grip
  • As you would expect from ODI the Vanquish grip has been engineered with purpose. It looks and feels like a premium grip. The two tone finish is a nice touch to provide you the comfort and durability on the bar end to survive the odd crash
