Getting Started in BMX Racing

I was having a conversation with a friend who is getting back into BMX racing, and, well, getting started in BMX racing isn’t as simple as it used to be, or should be. You used to be able to simply turn up to a club event and hit the track with your bike, in most cases, you can still do that at club level. Clubs are very helpful and should be able to provide anything you might need to get you on the track and racing.

In the case of an open event there are a few differences

  • You’ll need a membership/license that will cover the level of the event where you are competing.
  • You would need to pre-enter for the event.
  • You will be required to have a transponder for scoring.
  • You need to wear approved race clothing. Jeans and tracksuit pants aren’t allowed on the race track these days.

In Australia, at least, it can be quite overwhelming. We hope to break it all down for you in simple point form with links.

Find a local track

  • To find a local track AusCycling have a club finder search facility. Don’t forget to set your search filter to only include BMX discipline.

Membership

  • This can get confusing, if you want to race BMX you need a Race Off-road license.
  • There is also a 4 Week Free Trial license, it’s has restrictions and is limiting but a great way to dip your toe in the water. auscycling.org.au/membership/other/free-trial
  • A one day or seven day license is available too, if you’re not fully committed but want to compete at an event you can do that without coughing up for a full membership.
  • Worth noting, there’s also 12 month payment plan options.

Transponders

  • Scoring at most races, including club level, is automated with the use of transponders.
  • There are two types, older ones that can be refurbished with new batteries, or current myLaps ProChip Flex which has a subscription. Both work fine.

Online entries

  • Paper/postal entries are long gone. Once you get your head around the process online entries through entryboss are quite simple.

Online results

  • During, and after, the event you can check your times and scores. These can be great for those who like to compare and check their progress.

Rules

  • The technical regulations may change from year to year, here’s the current rulebook.

Hopefully that will make your first event a little simpler.
