Complete Bikes

Review: Mongoose Title Elite Pro XXL

The Mongoose Title Elite is an affordable mid range complete bike based around a frame that’s capable of mixing it with the big dogs among the elite on the RedBull Pump Track and UCI World Cup circuits. The Mongoose Title Elite complete bike has been around for a while but we’ve finally been able to get our hands on one thanks to the Aussie distributors PSI Cycling. When the Title Elite hit the market it caused quite a stir, and it’s easy to see why.

Whether you need a well priced bike to get you on the track with the kids or you are looking for something that you can upgrade as budget allows the Mongoose Title Elite is definitely worth a look. As soon as these hit the ground there were proud owners upgrading their parts to build some very impressive bikes. I’m surprised we didn’t see more of it here in Australia to be honest.

First Look

At first glance the Mongoose Title Elite is a nice looking bike out of the box. Some of the key features include; BB86 bottom bracket shell, tapered headtube, lightweight 6061 butted alloy frame, 4130 cromo forks and bars, 24mm 2 piece alloy cranks.

Pros

  • The frame is ready for anything but won’t hurt your bank balance
  • Lock on grips

Cons

  • Heavy wheelset, this would be a good place to start with the upgrades
  • The plastic pedals might be shin friendly but they will let you down when used in anger

On The Track

The older I get the more I realise I am very particular about the configuration of my bike. The Pro XXL frame was the right length for me but there was a significant difference in the handlebar, stem and crank sizes compared to what I use.  Sure I could have changed a few parts around but instead I passed it off to bmxultra.com team pilot and BMX guru Paul Knox. He was very interested, not only as a complete bike, but also as an OS20 conversion.

Here are Paul’s comments on the Mongoose Title Elite:

  • Instantly comfortable. The 74 degree head angle is perfect, not to fast, not to slow. Stable at speed. Overall balance is confidence inspiring. Great jumper and picks up easy for manuals.
  • Sized up right for bigger guys – Big bars, top load stem. Set up with 175mm cranks & throwaway plastic pedals for clip pedals. Old timers might prefer 180’s but this is aimed at current race trends.
  • Some of the most comfortable sets of grips I’ve had on a stock bike. Slightly longer than most lock ons & soft compound makes for great hand positioning.
  • Hubs aren’t the lightest or prettiest out there, but the bearings are smoooootttthhhh. These roll forever. Stock BB & Headset are very nice too.
  • What I’d change straight way though is the chain & brake cable; but that’s getting picky. And add some chain tensioners.

Comments

  • When it comes to value for money for a complete bike you can’t look much further than the Mongoose Title Elite. A great bike for getting back on the race track.
  • As a complete bike it’s a little weighty, but the frame is a great starting point with plenty of room for improvement on the parts.
  • A great bike out the the box, upgrade the pedals and it’s a true performer with truck loads of potential.
  • The Mongoose is a real head turner, I’m not sure if it’s because of the nostalgia with history of the brand or the fact they aren’t that common, either way it’s a great looking bike.
