Answer BMX Pinnacle Pro V2 Rims Review

Today we’re going to take a look at the Answer BMX Pinnacle Pro V2 rims, Answer’s 6061-T6 sleeve joined aluminium. Answer is a premium brand and when it comes to alloy rims the Pinnacle is a premium product, there’s no doubt. Let’s face it, Alienation and Sun Ringle, might be bigger names when it comes to alloy rims, but Answer is the new kid on the block, in comparison, but it’s probably the next in line when looking at quality alloy rims.

When it comes to rims for BMX racing we’re not short of choice. Sure there’s alloy and carbon, tubeless compatible and not, but then you have dozens and dozens of brands, shapes and colours. It’s often difficult for a particular rim to stand out above the rest.

You might be asking “Why would you even look at alloy rims in a market dominated by carbon?” Well, it’s a valid question, and there are a number of reasons.

  1. Alloy rims are significantly more affordable than alloy rims. With alloy rims you are generally looking at 1/5th the price of carbon rims, while often the weight difference is insignificant.  For example the Pinnacle rim is only 2.8oz (that’s 79 grams) heavier than the Answer carbon rim, but we will talk more about weight soon.
  2. The next important reason is the feel of the ride, not everyone is interested in the stiffer ride carbon rims are known for.
  3. Also when it comes to colour it’s hard to beat the colour options available with alloy rims.

Looks

When it comes to looks the Pinnacle rims are unassuming. Don’t get me wrong they present well, with clean lines and a great finish, and certainly look the part. Maybe they have a bit too much branding on them for my liking, but each to their own. Their colour options are pretty standard, with white, black, blue and red but the colours are vibrant. Built into a wheel set they look like they are up for the regular abuse we BMX racers put wheels through.

Weight

Let’s see how they compare to other popular alloy rims on the market. We’ll use a 20 x 1.75 as the bench mark for comparison.

Make/Model Weight
Answer Pinnacle Pro V2 391 grams
Sun Ringle Envy (rear) 405 grams
Alienation Malice (rear) 325 grams

Ok, so they are clearly not the lightest alloy rim option, but they are right up there with the best of them.

How do they Ride?

I’ve been running the Answer Pinnacle Pro V2 on my OS20 for about 5 months now, and they are still as straight as the day I got them. That’s not for lack of trying. Of course they have done thousands of laps already of our test track here, the BSX Compound. They have seen some hard and fast racing over those months too.

I’ve found the Pinnacle Pro V2 rims to be extremely reliable. While they are light they are still stiff, very stiff, and strong enough to take the day to day punishment.

The Final Word

I’m not going to lie, I was very surprised with the Answer Pinnacle rims. I didn’t set any expectations in the beginning but was able to put my trust in them right from the get go. They proved to be extremely reliable and strong rims that I would highly recommend.

Comments

  • If you are looking for a good quality, strong, stiff, light weight alloy rim, that’s built to last and great value for money, this could be the rim for you.
  • The Pinnacle Pro V2 isn’t the lightest alloy rim on the market but it’s not far off, given the price tag it’s a real contender.
  • Everything I ask for in a rim is right here! Looks great, feels great and it’s not going to have you taking out a second mortgage.
  • The Pinnacle Pro rim has clean lines and a classic look, but it’s also beautifully finished from the machining to the vibrancy of the anodize.
