Unparallel Dust Up Flat Shoes review
What’s so special about the Dust Up flat pedal shoes from California based Unparallel Sports? Imagine a flat pedal shoe that provides similar benefits to clip shoes. We’re talking about a stiff sole for better power transfer, a firmer fit with traditional laces but with a velcro strap for a more secure fit and to lock the laces out of the way. A shoe which provides plenty of grip and some ventilation/breathability through the tongue and extra protection of your foot by design.
The Unparallel Dust Up is one of the best options for those who have to, or choose to, race with flat pedals.
I’ve raced BMX for decades using flat pedals and Vans shoes, it’s what I know, it’s what I can trust, it’s what I’m comfortable in. When given the opportunity to try something a little different I’m always going to jump at it. My current set up is the Pedalling Innovations Catalyst pedal and some BMX specific Vans. The large platform of the Catalyst pedal supports a lot more of my foot, so the shoe doesn’t need to, it means I can walk around comfortably in my “race” shoes all day.
The Catalyst pedal isn’t for everyone, but then again neither are Vans shoes, and it’s not uncommon for a serious flat pedal racer to demand greater performance from their shoes. In steps the Dust Up, with this shoe you don’t need a large platform pedal to stop your foot clawing around the pedal, as happens with the softer soled Vans like shoes.
Also worth noting, the Unparallel Dust Up shoe is a great stepping stone towards a clip shoe as you can get used to that stiffer sole feel before clipping in. Making the transition easier.
First Impressions
I like the look of the Unparallel Dust Up shoes, they look ready to race right out of the box. They definetly look a lot slicker than any mountain bike shoe I’ve ever seen. To try them on they are a more snug fit than my Vans shoes and the sole is so stiff it takes a minute to get used to the difference. The velcro strap allows for a firmer, more secure fit once you do up your laces, but it’s also great that it works double duties and keeps your laces well and truely tucked out of the way. There’s no chance your laces are going to work loose, or worse still, get caught up in your chain or wrapped around your pedal axle.
The ride
It doesn’t take long to get used to riding with the stiffer sole. The softer honeycomb style grip of the sole to the pedal is the perfect interface, you can still feel the pedal under foot, just, but it’s enough to give you confidence your foot is firmly positioned correctly on the pedal. Although a lot stiffer initially, the shoe is comfortable while on the bike, a little less so just for walking around, but if you are like me you are more likely to “conserve energy” between motos. I found them a little hotter to wear than Vans, but on the flip side of that it means they would be warmer on cooler days, and potentially more water resistant.
I tried the shoes with a few different flat pedals, some old traditional shaped Kona platforms, the HT Components Lead pedals and the Pedaling Innovations Catalyst, while they all worked well, I found the Catalyst made the most comfortable pairing. I’m sure it’s just what you get used to though.

The Last Words
I never would have been aware of the Unparallel Dust Up shoes if they weren’t recommended to me. I’m glad they were and I’ve been able to give them a try. Without them I never would have considered my options of running a smaller pedal and still being able to have the stiffness underfoot that I have had to rely on the larger platform of the Catalyst pedal to provide. I highly recommend the Unparallel Dust Up shoes if you are looking for a stiff flat pedal shoe.

Comments
- The Unparallel Dust Up shoes are normally just above the $200 Aussie mark, but at the time of this review they are on sale at just $89 (link below), definitely worth every cent if you are looking for a quality high performance shoe that will help you get more power down to the pedals.
- The Dust Up’s are about the average weight of a sneaker, perhaps lighter.
- A great shoe for the flat pedal racer looking to milk greater performance and comfort for their dollar. My only complaint is that it needs a little extra airflow and breathability.
- The Dust Up almost looks like a clip shoe and offers almost all the same benefits for the flat pedal racer. I love the subdued colours and the classic look of the shoe.
