HT Leap ANS08 Platform Pedals Review

The HT Components Leap ANS08 platform pedal is the largest platform pedal in the HT product range. At 110mm wide, 100mm long and just 17mm high the dimensions are perfect for someone looking for a larger pedal.  Featuring a CNC’d alloy body, replaceable pins, cromo spindle, sealed bearings, available in multiple colour options and weighs in at light 398 grams for the pair. Like all HT pedals the Leap is fully serviceable.

HT Components have a massive range of platform pedals that vary in shape, size and price. It’s not hard to find a quality pedal to fit your requirements and your budget. We came across the HT Leap when looking for a high performance “flat” pedal with a large platform. It’s jam packed full of high end features, but at just $175 Aussie Dollars, it’s priced as a mid-range pedal.

HT Components pedals have taken over the market in just a few short years. Why have so many BMX racers across the world put their trust in this brand? Well the products tend to hit all the key requirements; great price, looks good, great grip, durable, serviceable, readily available and reliable. What’s not to like.

Manufacturer’s Description

The HT Components ANS08 Leap is equipped with EVO+ bearing system including igus® bushings. This helps spread stress loads on the shorter axles from heavy impacts, increasing durability. The prefect mid price range pedal, ready for everything.

How do they ride?

I’ve spent the last 7 years riding on the Pedaling Innovations Catalyst pedals, which has the largest platform on any flat pedal on the market. Paired with Vans they are comfortable and provide a tonne of grip. So going to the HT Leap pedal was actually a smaller platform for me, I was interested to see how the two would compare.

Immediately I felt comfortable on the HT Leap pedals. I had expected to have my shoe “claw” around them, but the platform is still large enough to eliminate that. Despite having less pins than the Catalyst the 9 pins it does have still provide plenty of grip and at no point was I worried about slipping a pedal or having the pedal body roll under foot. We were off to a great start.

I did try the HT Leap with my old reliable Vans shoes, which have a softer sole, and very comfortable to walk around in all day between races. I also used my much stiffer Unparallel Dust Up flat shoes which are a much stiffer soled free-ride style mountain bike shoe. These also proved to be a good combination, plenty of grip, but a little less of a feel of the pedal underfoot. Theoretically, a more efficient combo for maximising power through the pedals to the drive train.

Comments

  • a premium pedal with a mid-range price tag, you can’t get better value for money than that!
  • for a large alloy platform pedal with a cromo spindle you couldn’t expect lighter unless you went for more exotic materials, but you would be paying more for that, much more.
  • a platform pedal that’s comfortable with long ride sessions and when it comes to grip it sticks like the proverbial, top marks!
  • The HT Leap pedal is a modern twist on a tradition platform pedal with function a priority. The pedals are flawless, the presentation is second to none right down to the box that’s loaded with goodies including a socket for servicing and stickers. I love the large variety of colours available, which made it difficult to chose from, but I settled with black as a neutral colour that would work on any one of my bikes.
