ODI Longneck V2.1 Lock On Grips Review

The iconic ODI Longneck grip has been around for decades and is extremely popular amongst BMXers. It’s evolved from the single ply grip to the dual clamp lock-on and has been revamped again with a few small changes, including the V2.1 lock-on clamps.

The longneck is popular because of it’s size and long wearing comfortable ribbed design. It still features the smaller outer diameter of other grips like the ODI Ruffians, but the ribs offer a lot more comfort which goes a long way on big track sessions.

The Longneck V2.1 lock-on features a smaller flange for improved comfort but also gives it a more modern, slicker look.

The major change is the single clamp system. Let me assure you when a single clamp is fastened correctly it’s more than enough to hold up to the rigors of BMX racing. It’s been proven for MX and MTB for some years now.  They are easier to install, the larger allen key bolt allows you to get a lot more purchase, so no more stripped out allen key bolts, and no more twisted allen keys.

The single clamp design also means big benefits for the user. Firstly, without a clamp on the outer end of the bar, it allows the grip to be manufactured wider, previously room had to be made for the alloy clamp. Secondly, the benefit of added comfort. Having a wide hand, the alloy clamp on the outside of the grip always lead to discomfort on the narrower grips for me. The Longneck v2.1 is the best of both worlds, it combines the comfort of the single ply grip and the security and reliability of the lock-on.

Pros & Cons of the Longneck V2.1 Vs the Longneck Originals

Pros

  • A simple single lock system
  • A larger bolt head
  • Quicker and easier installation
  • Hand friendly soft ends
  • Even more durable and safer bar ends to keep you safe

Cons

  • No replaceable end clamp and cap should you drop the bike (aka crash), making it harder to keep the grips looking fresh
  • No longer able to change clamp colours and have them engraved
  • Only available in black

So they look great, but how do they feel?

I originally had the Longnecks set aside for me to review, but upon building up a bike with ODI Mini Ruffian grips for our 8 year old shredder, Ripley, she would complain of discomfort in her hand early in a ride, granted they were brand new and hadn’t been worn in yet and she wears super thin gloves. While the Longnecks are much wider they fit her bars and offered greater comfort, so why not see if they made a difference. They did. The discomfort was gone immediately and she could get on with her riding.

Over a couple of months the Longnecks have taken a beating with three big crashes, so far. While the softer rubber on the outer end cap has seen better days it’s still intact, and there’s still lots of life in the grips. The reinforced plastic ends have done a great job of holding the grip together and keeping the rider safe. I’m convinced lesser grips would have given up the ghost after the first big crash. I’ve seen many grips shed the bar plug, or cap, on impact and expose the sharp bar end. It’s my worst nightmare. But the Longnecks are designed to handle the impact and keep the rider safe and they do a great job of it.

Despite quite a bit of riding they aren’t showing any signs of wear yet, which is impressive.
