31/01 Team bmxultra.com update – Bunbury, WA
bmxultra.com press release
bmxultra.com team rider Matt Butterworth was in the racing action again on the weekend as part of the UCI Probix/Champbix rounds held at the brand new Perkins BMX Stadium in Bunbury, Western Australia.
With a brand new track and five metre start hill, Matt was in the thick of things as part of the WA Super Series round held concurrently to the UCI rounds.
Matt was riding strongly in the Vet Pro Cruiser and 40+ Cruiser classes, easily qualifying for both mains. The Vet Pro Cruiser main saw Matt in contention for a top 2 spot, swapping positions with Wesley Hill all the way round, but was nabbed on the line and was content with 3rd place ahead of Hill and Wayne Green on the top step of the podium.
In 40+ cruiser Matt fared much better, clean sheeting the motos and having a wire to wire win in the main event ahead of NT’s Jason Eecen who, along with a large team of Territorians, came down to Bunbury to support the event. Rounding out the podium was Brad Brown and Stay Strong’s Paul Andrews in 4th.
Attention now turns to preparation for the State Championships at Westside, Balcatta at the end of the month.
The brand new track, along with another five meter start ramp is due to open any day now and those who have laid eyes on the track already claim it to be a beauty.
The bmxultra.com team is proudly supported by One Bicycles, Supercross BMX, Dirt Designs, Tioga, Elite Cycle Imports, THE, Profile, Sun Ringle, and Tektro Brakes.

27/01 Team bmxultra.com update – Track Attack & BSX
by bmxultra.com
The bmxultra.com/One Bicycles team were out in full force last week at Track Attack, the six track event around Melboune and naturally the One on One flat pedal race the Speed Bicycles/Sinz Elite BSX at the bmxultra.com compound. Considered by many as the highlight of the week.
Team bmxultra.com at the Speed Bicycles/Sinz Elite BSX
Rear (Left – Right) Levi Collins, Scooby Guyers, Jamie Bullows, Adam Carey, Aaron Rogers
Front (Left – Right) Shane Jenkins, Brandan Bullows, Jason Bergstrom, Chase Collins
Jason Bergstrom, bmxultra.com team rider and photographer, flew in from Knoxville Tennessee to dust off his bike that he hasn’t raced in over 2 years and join his Aussie team members for a couple of months of racing, riding and hanging out. Jason had a ball at the four rounds of Track Attack that he raced in 30-39 Mens class, making new friends and riding new tracks. Even qualifying for one of the Expert finals. But if you ask him, it was qualifying in the top 16 of the 30 & Over Open wheel class at BSX that was the most fun of all. He was the first ever American to compete at BSX and the first ever deaf BMXer.
Shane Jenkins raced in the 40+ Men’s class at three of the rounds of Track Attack and rode well in a large class taking three wins. He didn’t have so much luck at Lilydale where he opted to race in A-Pro with a crash but was still competitive. Shane also finished up with a third at BSX in the 30 & Over Open Wheel class for the fourth year in a row.
Scooby Guyers flew in from Adelaide for BSX and hit up the first two rounds of Track Attack in A Pro making the main on the first day where he finished fifth, after falling ill overnight Scooby had to pull out half way through the day on Sunday. When it came to BSX though he was feeling a lot better, he qualified 17th in the open mens class but was knocked out in round 1 by the eventual winner Josh Callan.
Brandan Bullows (bmxultra.com/Supercross Australia) was the only bmxultra.com team rider to compete in the whole of the Track Attack series in a large A-Pro class. He finished second overall in the points standings and seventh overall by cash earnings, some bad luck in semis kept him out of two of the finals. Brandan also had a great day at BSX, winning the big air jump competition, qualifying third in the time trial of the open men but was knocked out in the quarter finals.
Levi Collins had stepped it up since the last time we had seen him race, it shows that training hard pays off. He finished seventh overall in the money earnings at Track Attack, not bad after only riding at four of the six rounds. Levi also had a good day at BSX, he qualified second in the time trial for open men but was eliminated in the second round.
Chase Collins kicked off his week at BSX where he qualified fifteenth. Chase went on to defy the odds and made it all the way to the semi where he was beaten by Josh Callan and finished fourth overall after being beaten by Olivier Hourau in the B final. When he returned for the two final rounds of Track Attack he’d decided to step it up and take on the AA Pros, while he had good first straight pull he still has some work to do to get up to AA Pro speed.
Aaron Rogers hit up three rounds of Track Attack in the 30-39 mens class finishing up with a third, a seventh and a fifth in his mains. At BSX he qualified in 12th on the 30 & Over Open wheel class but was knocked out in the first round by finalist Brian Kelly.
Jamie Bullows hit up one round of Track Attack where he finished sixth in the 30-39 Men and at BSX he qualified 16th after a massive crash in the last straight. He was eliminated in the first round.
Adam Carey only attended BSX, he qualified eighth in the Open Men and went on to the Quarter finals where he was elmininated by Olivier Hoarau.
Well done to all riders.

Oli put on a fantastic performance and a consistant week of riding giving him enough points to take the series win. He also came away with final wins at both Lilydale and the final round at Park Orchards. A strong Victorian field with the likes of Tom Siinmaa and Matt Dunsworth, made for some exciting battles.
World Champion Jaden Rice was also in there, racing up a class as he prepares for the 2011 season ahead. About BSX
BSX (Bicycle Supercross) is one-on-one sprint trails style racing on a backyard track built specifically to test a rider’s skills. The short straights, lofty jumps and tight corners are very intense under race conditions but also fun for competitors and create quite a lot of entertainment for spectators. The event provides a unique experience for the local Victorian riders, as well as the interstate and international visitors during an off day of the Track Attack series. The events primary function is to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation. In just five years the event has raised approximately $22,000 which has provided the hospital with new equipment. Funds have been raised through gate takings, raffles, auctions and donations.
About the Royal Children’s Hospital
‘The Royal Children’s Hospital is the major specialist paediatric hospital in Victoria and provides a full range of clinical services and health promotion and prevention programs for infants through to adolescents. Each year the Royal Children’s Hospital treats tens of thousands of children through our Emergency Department, inpatient admissions and outpatient visits. The Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation plays a vital role in providing additional funding to support important research projects and purchase state of the art medical equipment to ensure that every child receives the very best treatment now and into the future.

20/01 Speed/Sinz Elite BSX: Official Times
by bmxultra.com
The Speed Bicycles/Sinz Elite BSX is done and dusted, but we have a whole lot of things to tell you about it. Rather than keep you waiting, we’ll feed the information through as we get it together.
The first round of elimination for BSX is the Time Trial. It’s used to seed the riders through the elimination rounds. The fastest rider in each round has earned the choice of lane. There are a few riders who are unfortunately eliminated in the timed run, but that’s the nature of BSX, it’s all about the last man, or woman, standing.
This year saw a record number of riders in all classes.
- 41 riders in Open men
- 5 riders in Open women
- 17 riders in 30 & Over open wheel
Without transponders we had to run it ol’ school. Three stop watches, the times were averaged to determine the official time. A little more fair and accurate than a single stop watch.
To mix things up in the time trial we used some feedback about past events and allowed riders to choose their own way around. Allowing them to transfer from lane to lane as they please. And there were some interesting results as many riders pre planned their rides before hitting the track, others just winged it. As you can see below there were some very close times. It certainly made spectating interesting.
Josh Callan took the fastest time for the day being the only rider with a sub 20 second time at 19.63. Simon Anderson and Ziggy Callan took the fastest times in their classes too. The three of them have dominated the event over the past few years and, going by their times, it looked like it would happen again.
Here are the official results from the time trials. More to come soon.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What does the weather look like for Monday?
A. The weather gods have decided that the track has had enough water and will shut things down for the weekend to give the track a chance to dry up. The minute it’s dry we’ll get it under cover for the evening before the event.
The current forecast is 22 with a shower or two. Check here for the most up to date forecast: http://www.bom.gov.au/vic/forecasts/yarraglen.shtml
Q. What can I win?
A. Our generous partners have donated many prizes, more than you could imagine. There’s everything from stickers, to t-shirts, enough bike parts to build a couple of full bikes and still have plenty of spare parts, including Sinz forks and Speed frames, there’s an MTB Downhill tour and a whole lot more.
We will have two raffles (a $1 and a $2 raffle), auctions and silent auctions, so there are many ways to win. The auctions will be run through the day, the first of the Speed frames will go under the hammer at around 3pm. The raffles will be drawn after the finals, the silent auctions will finish after the presentation, then on to the number plate auction and the auction for the other Speed frame and other prizes.
What can you win? There’s a pretty damn good chance you could walk away with a whole lot of goodies, but you have to be in it to win it!
Q. How does the track look?
A. The track has been well groomed leading up to the event, with improved drainage the water flows away quickly. That said, a day or two of sun and the track should be perfect for the big day.
Q. Where is BSX?
A. 55 Watsons Rd, Pheasant Creek. Check the entry form for maps and directions. Melways doesn’t have detailed maps of the area. If you are relying on GPS, it’s best to plan your trip first, GPS has been known to drop out in the area.
Q. What food is there?
A. As per usual the Kinglake West CFA will be providing the most awesome BBQ (and drinks) on the hill for the whole day. Make sure you bring some money along and help them keep the area safe. There will be some organic berries, jams and sauces from local Kinglake fruit grower Kadarina Berries and some cakes and Tasty Treats
Q. Can I bring a tent?
A. Sure, but we cannot reserve spots for you. It’s first in best dressed. Sponsor tents will be positioned before the general public is allowed through the gate.
Q. What are the classes?
A. Classes:
- Open Men
- Open Women
- 30 & Over Open wheel
- Gromits (Under 12 – non-competition class)
Q. How do I enter?
A. Look for any of the bmxultra.com team riders or the bmxultra.com banner at the first two rounds of Track Attack (Eastfield and South Eastern) or you can enter on the day at the gate from 10:30 am until 12:30 pm. You must also present your license. Freestyle BMX registered riders are also able to enter the event.
Q. Does it cost anything to spectate?
A. Since it’s a charity event there are numerous costs we need to cover, including insurances, toilet hire, etc there is a spectators fee.
- $10 adult (14 and over)
- $5 children (6-13)
- free children (under 6)
- $25 family (2 adults, 3 children)
Q. When does it all start?
A. The gates open and practice starts at 11:00am on Monday January 17.
Q. Will there be a webcam again?
A. Sure will, we expect to sort that out over the weekend and provide the link to it as soon as possible. Watch this space.
Q. Can I pre-order merchandise?
A. Yes you can, we will have a limited range of t-shirts and hoodies available on the day. Providing we have the sizes you are after we can put them on hold for you, but only until 1pm. You can pick them up at the merchandise stand. Please email webmaster@bmxultra.com for further details.
Track work
There haven’t been any major changes to the track, but a whole lot of little tweaks that have made the track flow better and faster. I’d like to thank everyone who’s helped out. A special thanks to Dean Steele who whipper snipped the who track on Saturday, it’s come up looking great.
We still do have some major changes planned but, because of the poor weather over the past months making it nearly impossible to get equipment in, they will be for BSX2012.
Riding sessions/working bees
The countdown is on and the weather finally looks like it’s going to fine up, we may not get the changes to the track we were hoping for but come race day it will look awesome and be a whole lot of fun.
We have the last riding session and working been planned for this coming Friday. If you feel like a ride and/or swinging a shovel it will be the last full day to do so:
- Friday 14 Jan, 10am – late
Other times may be arranged but must be confirmed first.
Be sure to send an email to webmaster@bmxultra.com or call ahead to check on the weather before you head up.
A new class
There is strong campaigning for a new class for the younger riders at BSX, while we have resisted in the past we are seriously considering it for the Speed Bicycles/Sinz Elite BSX. If you have strong feelings for or against email us at webmaster@bmxultra.com and let us know what you think, we are always open for feedback.
Currently we are thinking that we will give riders under 12 years of age the choice to race against the older guys or ride in with guys their own age. We will kick off the day with them riding the track for 30 minutes, then they get to ride the track during the breaks. It’s not racing, but the little guys should be able to join in the fun too. We still have a month to refine this, so anyone who has an opinion please get in touch with us to discuss further. (Please note this is all weather dependant too).
The under 12’s, who we will call gromits, who choose to ride (and not race) will pay a $20 entry fee. They will get a BSX number plate without a number to keep, it will have plenty of room for them to have their favourite riders sign it.
We will kick off the practice session at 11am with the gromits riding for 30 minutes then 90 minutes of riding for the guys who are racing. The gromits will ride the track between elimination rounds and will be
Partnership opportunities
If you would like to be involved in Speed Bicycles/Sinz Elite BSX we have partnership packages available now, email webmaster@bmxultra.com for details. Basically we are looking for donations or products or even services for auctions/raffles. 100% of profits raised will go directly to the Royal Children’s Hospital.
BSX2010 DVDs
We have finally finished off the BSX2010 DVDs and should have some this weekend at the Victorian State Championships.
These things will make great Christmas stocking stuffers
- Recorded in HD
- Over an hour of BMX action
- Great Aussie music from Poison City Records
They are $15 each. (Plus $5 postage if you would like them mailed out.)
If you would like to order a copy email webmaster@bmxultra.com.
Poster
The 2011 poster for the event has been finalised. It features Luke Madill (left) who won the event in 2006 and 2007 and Josh Callan (right) who won in 2008 and 2010.
As we add partners the supported by area will be updated. So if you are interested in being a part of a very unique event and becoming a partner read the partner opportunities section below.
Go ahead and print it out and put it on your fridge, put it in your bmx club newsletter, put it on your facebook page, whatever, just spread the word.
Volunteers needed
We will also need some new volunteers for administration leading up to the event as well as running the event on the day. Jobs include parking attendants, ticket sales on the gate, taking entries, selling raffle tickets, manning the silent auctions, track maintenance and so on.
Riders
If you are interested in the event drop us an email webmaster@bmxultra.com to help us determine how many riders to expect.
We need to know:
- what class you would like to ride
- Open men
- Open women
- 30 & Over Open wheel
- where you are from (City & State)
- and your name.
Generally we end up with 32+ riders in the Open mens class, about 12 in the 30 & Over open wheel and 2-4 Open women. But there is plenty of room for more.

Entry form
There have been a few people enquiring about entry forms for the Speed Bicycles/Sinz Elite BSX. We have finally put them together for you.
There is no panic. Traditionally we don’t take entries until the two track attack rounds leading up to BSX and on the gate from 10:30am-12pm at the gate on the day of the event. And who are we to break tradition.
For the smoothest possible experience. Download the entry form, complete it, have your money and bmx australia licence (or green slip) ready and hand it in before you hit the track.
Click here for the entry form.

- what class you would like to ride
- Open men
- Open women

14/01 Ho, Ho, Ho!!, Morphine Industries – Naughty and Nice at NBL Christmas Classic
Morphine Industries press release
A select few of the Morphine Industries Factory Team made the trek to the winter wonderland of Columbus, OH for the NBL President’s Cup and the Christmas Classic. Columbus welcomed back the race after a short hiatus and with a new system in place, the race was expected to have a nice size moto count.
Elite Men – “Money” Mike Kapes hit the track Monday to represent the state of Florida in the Elite Open. He crossed to the finish line first in the Main to bring the Elite Cup to the Sunshine state.
Christmas Classic Day 1 started off with a few firsts in motos and finished with a tight race in the Main taking a second place spot on podium.
Mike hit Day 2 of the Classic rolling through motos with a few deuces. The main brought about some banging down the first and second straight and then a ball up causing Mike to go off the track and roll through am section hanging on for the 7th spot.
11X – Richie Dey came to Ohio with plans to end the year with a statement of domination in the 11 expert class…. And well a statement was made.
Richie started of the assault on Monday with a clean sweep at the President’s Cup with 1st in all motos for Class, Cruiser and Open. His dominance continued as he rolled through maintime with a top podium spot in each.
Day 1 at the Christmas Classic proved that the President’s Cup was the real thing. Richie again charged through motos in Class, Cruiser and Open and did not stop till he was sitting on the top spot of the podium once again post main.
Day 2 saw Richie continue his stellar performance with a perfect rolling through motos once again in Class, Cruiser and Open. However due to crash in Open, his perfect three day weekend came to a halt. Richie end Day 2 with a 2st in Class, 1st in Cruiser and 7th in Open.
It was a great weekend of racing a great weekend for the Morphine Industries’ riders. The next stop for the Morphine crew is Miami South BMX for the 3rd stop on the Florida State Series. Then it’s the return of the ABA to Florida with the ABA Gator Nationals at Oldsmar BMX.
Morphine Industries would like to thank its Factory Team Sponsors; Haro Bikes (harobikes.com), Fly Racing (www.flyracingbmx.com), Alienation (www.alienationbmx.com), DK Bicycles (www.dkbicycles.com), Folmer BMX (www.folmerbmx.com), Rennen (www.rennendesigngroup.com), Tioga (www.tiogausa.com/bmx), Black Crown (BlackCrownBmx.com) Without you guys we would be sitting in the dirt.

Spectator entry fee
We would love to invite everyone to BSX for free but this is a charity event that’s expensive to run with public liability insurance, toilet hire and other costs so it’s just not possible. That said we have kept the prices the same as they have been since BSX started in 2006.
- $10 adult (14 and over)
- $5 children (6-13)
- free children (under 6)
- $25 family (2 adults, 3 children)
Track work
There haven’t been any major changes to the track, but a whole lot of little tweaks that have made the track flow better and faster.

12/01 New Sinz Elite iHub Race Wheels Rolling Out of VSI
Sinz Elite press release
Sinz Elite’s new iHub Wheels are some of the most advanced BMX wheels available. The high-end wheels feature a straight-pull spoke design that boosts lateral rigidity, wheel strength and reduces weight.
At the heart of the wheels are the new, lightweight, fully CNC-machined Sinz Elite iHubs, which have hollow 15-millimeter aluminum-alloy axles paired with 10-millimeter button-head bolts. Massive 22- and 25-millimeter outer flanges at the ends of the axles create massive clamping surface between the hub and the dropouts. Oversize axles further improve lateral rigidity and help support the cassette body in the rear. Connecting the iHubs to a pair of brand new Sinz Elite hoops are triple-butted, straight-pull, stainless steel spokes and oversize aluminum nipples.
The new Sinz Elite straight-pull iHubs have a minimalist design to reduce weight. |
Straight-pull spokes offer many advantages over common J-bend spokes. Despite their lower spoke count and lower weight, Sinz Elite 24- (Mini) 32-hole wheels are as strong as heavier higher spoke-count J-bend spoke wheels. Because straight-pull spokes flex less, they create wheels that are up to 30 percent stiffer laterally than traditional wheels and are less inclined to stretch and break. Lighter and stiffer, what more could you want from a race wheel?
Sizes include Pro 20- and 24-inch, Expert 20- and 24-inch and Mini 20-inch. The Pro and Expert wheels have 32 spokes front and rear while the Minis have 24. The rims, iHubs, spokes and nipples are finished in black with laser-etched hub and custom, heat-infused, full-coverage rim graphics.
Order some now for the new races season.
Custom CNC-machined iHubs, 32 stainless steel straight-pull spokes and a super-strong aluminum rims, yep, these are the sweet new Sinz Elite Pro wheels. Get yours today. |

About BSX

The events primary function is to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation. In just five years the event has raised approximately $22,000 which has provided the hospital with new equipment. Funds have been raised through gate takings, raffles, auctions and donations.

Entry forms
We plan to have entry forms available very soon, hopefully in the next day or two. You can enter on the day (get in early) or at the bmxultra.com tent at the first two rounds of Track Attack.
Riding sessions/working bees
The countdown is on and the weather finally looks like it’s going to fine up, we may not get the changes to the track we were hoping for but come race day it will look awesome and be a whole lot of fun.
We have a whole lot of riding and a bit of clean up planned over the next few weeks. If you feel like a ride and/or swinging a shovel over the holiday period we’ll be playing in the back yard on the following dates:
- Saturday 8 Jan, 10am – late
- Sunday 9 Jan, 10am – late
- Friday 14 Jan, 10am – late
Other times can be arranged but must be confirmed first.
We have to check with our printer but there will be a donation required and the riders will not only have a ball but go home with something. We can’t make any promisses but we are hoping it’s something cool.
Track Upgrades
Thanks to some awesome friends and family we now have a ram for the BSX starting gate. This means that the gate will be as safe as it could possibly be, we will need less volunteers (so more people can enjoy the racing) and the gate will drop super quick.
We have been making a lot of changes to the track by hand, and the first two straights are faster and more fun than they have ever been. We still have plans for the last half of the track, but are trying to team up with the guys from Dirtz (www.dirtz.com.au) to make it the coolest little backyard track in the world. We are very excited and fingers crossed we can make it happen. If things don’t work out we still have a plan B and the track will still be significantly different to what it is now.

He has really stepped up his game during the 2010 season winning multiple A Pro & Pro Cruiser events and becoming a consistent main maker in Elite Men. Gavin capped off a great year at the ABA Race of Champions with a 2nd in A Pro and at the Grands, not only did he get 2nd in Pro Cruiser but he fought through a field of 35 of the worlds fastest racers in Elite Men/AA Pro for a spot in the main event! As if those accomplishments weren’t enough, Gavin has also become a contender in the SX series and we have no doubt that he will soon be at the top of that series as well.
When asked about the move, team manager, Doran Bradshaw said, “Gavin has been a great representative for Morphine Industries and our sponsors. He has been killin’ it on the track, so we know someone will scoop him up quick. No matter what colors he will be wearing, Gavin will always be a part of our family and we wish him the best of luck.”
Teams looking to add a great guy that is quickly making a name for himself in the Elite/AA class, should email Gavin at gavin_lubbe@yahoo.com or hit him up at Reno or Guthrie.

03/01 Speed/Sinz Elite BSX: Two weeks to go & Gate mods
by bmxultra.com
There is just two weeks to go until the Speed/Sinz Elite BSX!
BSX (short for Bicycle Supercross, and is often referred to as Backyard Supercross) is a Royal Children’s Hospital fund raiser. It will be on again on Monday 17 January 2011 (during Track Attack). It will be the sixth running of the one on one backyard BMX race. BSX is the longest running event of it’s kind in the world and draws a large number of competitors from around Australia. The event has also pulled a few international visitors and a number of Olympians.
Gate mods
The starting hill has been repainted and is looking the goods for the upcoming BSX.
On top of that we spent a bit of time with Travo from Holeshot Industries yesterday working on installing a new gate that’s a whole lot lighter than our old one.
The new gate needs a quick paint job but still looks amazing and makes far less noise than the old one which would keep the neighbours happy.
We’d like to thank Travo and Holehot Industries for their help. If you are looking for a one or two man practice gate check out holeshotindustries.net.
We have to check with our printer but there will be a donation required and the riders will not only have a ball but go home with something. We can’t make any promisses but we are hoping it’s something cool.
