Riding sessions/working bees

The countdown is on and the weather finally looks like it’s going to fine up, we may not get the changes to the track we were hoping for but come race day it will look awesome and be a whole lot of fun.

We have a whole lot of riding and a bit of clean up planned over the next few weeks. If you feel like a ride and/or swinging a shovel over the holiday period we’ll be playing in the back yard on the following dates:

  • Sunday (boxing day) 26 Dec, 10am – late
  • Tuesday 28 Dec, 10am – late
  • Wednesday 29 Dec, 10am – late
  • Thursday 30 Dec, 10am – late
  • Friday (new years eve) 31 Dec, 10am – 1pm
  • Saturday (new years day) 1 Jan, 12pm – late
  • Sunday 2 Jan, 10am – late

Also

  • Friday 14 Jan, 10am – late

Other times can be arranged but must be confirmed first.

Be sure to send an email to webmaster@bmxultra.com or call ahead to check on the weather before you head up.

A new class

There is strong campaigning for a new class for the younger riders at BSX, while we have resisted in the past we are seriously considering it for the Speed Bicycles/Sinz Elite BSX. If you have strong feelings for or against email us at webmaster@bmxultra.com and let us know what you think, we are always open for feedback.

Currently we are thinking that we will give riders under 12 years of age the choice to race against the older guys or ride in with guys their own age. We will kick off the day with them riding the track for 30 minutes, then they get to ride the track during the breaks. It’s not racing, but the little guys should be able to join in the fun too. We still have a month to refine this, so anyone who has an opinion please get in touch with us to discuss further. (Please note this is all weather dependant too).

We have to check with our printer but there will be a donation required and the riders will not only have a ball but go home with something. We can’t make any promisses but we are hoping it’s something cool.

Partnership opportunities

If you would like to be involved in Speed Bicycles/Sinz Elite BSX we have partnership packages available now, email webmaster@bmxultra.com for details. Basically we are looking for donations or products or even services for auctions/raffles. 100% of profits raised will go directly to the Royal Children’s Hospital.

BSX2010 DVDs

We have finally finished off the BSX2010 DVDs and should have some this weekend at the Victorian State Championships.

These things will make great Christmas stocking stuffers

  • Recorded in HD
  • Over an hour of BMX action
  • Great Aussie music from Poison City Records

They are $15 each. (Plus $5 postage if you would like them mailed out.)

If you would like to order a copy email webmaster@bmxultra.com.

Track Upgrades

Thanks to some awesome friends and family we now have a ram for the BSX starting gate. This means that the gate will be as safe as it could possibly be, we will need less volunteers (so more people can enjoy the racing) and the gate will drop super quick.

We have been making a lot of changes to the track by hand, and the first two straights are faster and more fun than they have ever been. We still have plans for the last half of the track, but are trying to team up with the guys from Dirtz (www.dirtz.com.au) to make it the coolest little backyard track in the world. We are very excited and fingers crossed we can make it happen. If things don’t work out we still have a plan B and the track will still be significantly different to what it is now.

Poster

The 2011 poster for the event has been finalised. It features Luke Madill (left) who won the event in 2006 and 2007 and Josh Callan (right) who won in 2008 and 2010.

As we add partners the supported by area will be updated. So if you are interested in being a part of a very unique event and becoming a partner read the partner opportunities section below.

Go ahead and print it out and put it on your fridge, put it in your bmx club newsletter, put it on your facebook page, whatever, just spread the word.

Volunteers needed

We will also need some new volunteers for administration leading up to the event as well as running the event on the day. Jobs include parking attendants, ticket sales on the gate, taking entries, selling raffle tickets, manning the silent auctions, track maintenance and so on.

Riders

If you are interested in the event drop us an email webmaster@bmxultra.com to help us determine how many riders to expect.

We need to know:

  • what class you would like to ride
    • Open men
    • Open women
    • 30 & Over Open wheel
  • where you are from (City & State)
  • and your name.

Generally we end up with 32+ riders in the Open mens class, about 12 in the 30 & Over open wheel and 2-4 Open women. But there is plenty of room for more.

About BSX

BSX (Bicycle Supercross) is one-on-one sprint trails style racing on a backyard track built specifically to test a rider’s skills. The short straights, lofty jumps and tight corners are very intense under race conditions but also fun for competitors and create quite a lot of entertainment for spectators. The event provides a unique experience for the local Victorian riders, as well as the interstate and international visitors during an off day of the Track Attack series. The events primary function is to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation. In just five years the event has raised approximately $22,000 which has provided the hospital with new equipment. Funds have been raised through gate takings, raffles, auctions and donations.

About the Royal Children’s Hospital

‘The Royal Children’s Hospital is the major specialist paediatric hospital in Victoria and provides a full range of clinical services and health promotion and prevention programs for infants through to adolescents. Each year the Royal Children’s Hospital treats tens of thousands of children through our Emergency Department, inpatient admissions and outpatient visits. The Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation plays a vital role in providing additional funding to support important research projects and purchase state of the art medical equipment to ensure that every child receives the very best treatment now and into the future.

23/12 Morphine Industries’ The “Nugget” Takes the Top Spot at the Young Guns Shootout – Pro/Am

Morphine Industries press release

We got there Saturday morning ready to race.  Practice was the usual where all the fast guys were sizing each other up during the full out practice laps.  The heavy hitters of the day were Dennison Smith and Tyler Whitfield.

Motos started and the powers that be were not shy about stacking the first moto with all the fast guys.  Hey, if you are going to win you got to beat the best.  After three rounds, I was sitting at a 1-2-1.  I continued with a 1 in the semi and it was on to Main Time.

I got lane choice due to top finish so I took lane 1.  The gate dropped and Dennison and I collided going into turn 1 and luckily I came out in front of him.  Another rider avoided the contact and passed me going into the 2nd straight but I caught and passed him into the 2nd turn.  I rode the rest to the top spot

Sunday brought the Future Pro Challenge, always a fun race with a lot of fast bros from the area. And they give out some cool prizes.  Come on who doesn’t like cool prizes.  The motos started and I ended with a 1-1-1. I keep up the momentum and rolled through semis once again to Main Time.  Lane choice put me in lane 1 for the second day.  The gate dropped and this time Tyler and I went into turn 1 banging.  @ riders took advantage of the contact and passed us out of turn one.  I jumped back on the gas and passed one of the riders in turn 2 and was not able to caught the other finishing with a deuce for the day.

Thanks to everyone at Steel Wheels it was a great weekend of racing with a bunch of skilled riders.

Morphine Industries would like to thank its Factory Team Sponsors; HARO BIKES (harobikes.com), Fly Racing (www.flyracingbmx.com),  Alienation (www.alienationbmx.com), Sinz Racing (www.sinz-racing.com), Rennen (www.rennendesigngroup.com), Tioga (www.tiogausa.com/bmx), Black Crown (BlackCrownBmx.com)  Without you guys we would be sitting in the dirt.  Instead, we are rockin’ the best looking rigs at the gate and on the podium.

We have been working on a poster for a project and thought since it’s Christmas time we would share it with the bmxultra.com readers to download as background images so you can decorate your computer screens.

We looked at our web traffic to determine the four most popular sizes, so you should find something suitable.

We do plan on doing more of these, so if you have any feedback like naming riders you would like to use as your background image or sizes or anything else related just email webmaster@bmxultra.com and we’ll see what we can do.

17/12 Speed/Sinz Elite BSX: One month until the big day

One month to go

There is only a month until the Speed Bicycles/Sinz Elite BSX. All the paper work has been done. We still have to tidy up the track and hopefully make some changes before race day, but heavy rainfalls have made it difficult to bring in machinery.

If all goes to plan we should be on target for the biggest BSX ever, with some of the biggest names in BMX behind the event and truck loads of awesome prizes to be won. It’s great to hear we have more girls and 30 & Over riders talking about racing at BSX for the first time. We have confirmed our first American competitor, bmxultra.com team rider Jason Bergstrom from Tennessee, will be flying in to take on the track and the other 30 & Over riders.

Let’s face it, BSX is the most fun you can have on two wheels, for the riders and the spectators.

bsx2011-poster-thumbRide this weekend

We are planning a ride and working bee this Saturday (Dec 18) from 10am and Sunday (Dec 19) from 10am.

With the amount of rain that we’ve received over the past months it’s been difficult to keep the track area clear of weeds, and they have been growing like crazy.

If you have some time to spare over this coming weekend and would like ride and/or to help out with the clean up and maybe man the whipper snipper for a bit let us know you are coming.

Be sure to send an email to webmaster@bmxultra.com or call ahead to check on the weather before you head up.

The track changes are coming along very well so far, with some tweaks that will make the track faster, and a whole lot more fun and challenging, and there are still a whole lot more to come

The UCI BMX Supercross World Cup, the world’s leading BMX racing series, serves as the main qualification event for the 2012 Olympic Games. Introduced by the UCI in 2003, this series of races has revitalized BMX with its exciting and spectacular Supercross format.

UCI will maintain its role in governing the sport and will continue to draw up and manage the international calendar as well as establish the regulations for international competition.

UCI President Pat McQuaid explains, “BMX in general and the BMX Supercross World Cup in particular, are undergoing spectacular growth, which has accelerated since their Olympic baptism in Beijing in 2008. The UCI has invested considerably in the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup to bring it up to its current level, but I am convinced that the partnership that will now link the UCI and Global SX Events will allow BMX to continue its growth in optimal conditions: still under the aegis of the UCI, but making the most of GSX Events’ skills.”

Based in Gahanna, Ohio (USA), Global SX Events Inc will take over the general management of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup, for which it will hold part of the organization and maketing rights. In addition, GSX Events will also be the UCI partner in another field: the UCI’s BMX track building service. With the recent development of the discipline worldwide, GSX Events (through EliteTrax) will be able to answer to the increased demands for the construction of high-level BMX tracks around the world. The BMX track building service will be led by the well-known track building expert Tom Ritzenthaler.

Gary Aragon, Chairman and President of GSX Events, says, “The UCI BMX Supercross World Cup series is currently the leading international BMX event. But as the sport grows, the series will need to grow with it. GSX Events is committed to continually develop and advance the sport of BMX racing the world over. Our goal is to partner with the UCI to take the sport through this next phase of growth.”

15/12 Team bmxultra.com update – HRV Classic

by bmxultra.com

The bmxultra.com/One Bicycles team were out at the HRV Classic at Park Orchards on the weekend.

bmxultra_levi_collins_parkorchardsLevi Collins, current 25-29 Mens UCI world champion, once again entered to play with the big boys in the Pro class. This time he was in the mix with a couple of seconds in the motos. He quilified to the semis but could only manage a seventh, not a bad effort in such a classy field.

Kyle Horton put his bad luck from Franston behind him and started off the day riding strong in the motos. The semi was an epic battle with Josh Callan while the two were fighting it out for the four spot. There were a couple of hairy moments through the prosection and then the last corner but it was Kyle who made it through to the main. Coming out of lane eight in the final Kyle didn’t get the best of starts and was left playing catch up, he finished in seventh in a very strong field.

Shane Jenkins was in the 40 & Over men’s 20″ class looking to get his hands on one of the biggest trophies Australia has seen for a long time. After three first place finishes in the first three races Jenkins rode a safe race in the last moto to finish second but take the overall win.

Jamie Bullows was racing in the 30-39 20″ class and was also after a big trophy. He had some horse power down the first straight but lacked the full lap fitness that the Park Orchards track demands from a rider. Jamie settled for fourth and is continuing to show signs of improvement.

Well done to all riders.

The bmxultra.com team is proudly supported by One Bicycles, Supercross BMX, Dirt Designs, Tioga, Elite Cycle Imports, THE, Profile, Sun Ringle, S&M Bikes and Tektro Brakes.

14/12 Speed/Sinz Elite BSX: The OM of BMX, working bee/ride this weekend

by bmxultra.com

BSX (short for Bicycle Supercross, and is often referred to as Backyard Supercross) is a Royal Children’s Hospital fund raiser. It will be on again on Monday 17 January 2011 (during Track Attack). It will be the sixth running of the one on one backyard BMX race. BSX is the longest running event of it’s kind in the world and draws a large number of competitors from around Australia. The event has also pulled a few international visitors and a number of Olympians.

bsx2011-poster-thumbThe OM of BMX

Here’s something extremely rare for you old schooler’s and lovers of all things BMX out there.

We helped Scot Breithaupt, the OM of BMX, a little while back with websites, posters and t-shirts for the 40 Years of BMX celebrations in Long Beach California, so we pulled a favour.

We have arranged three 40 Years of BMX packs that will be auctioned off at BSX that include

  • 1 x 40 Years of BMX (Haro) poster
  • 1 x 40 Years of BMX (Photographic) poster
  • 1 x Event wrist band (signed by the OM himself)

Thanks a bunch to Scot for helping us raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Ride this weekend

We are planning a ride and working bee this Saturday (Dec 18) from 10am and Sunday (Dec 19) from 10am.

With the amount of rain that we’ve received over the past months it’s been difficult to keep the track area clear of weeds, and they have been growing like crazy.

If you have some time to spare over this coming weekend and would like ride and/or to help out with the clean up and maybe man the whipper snipper for a bit let us know you are coming.

Be sure to send an email or call ahead to check on the weather before you head up.

Partnership opportunities

If you would like to be involved in BSX2011 we have partnership packages available now, email webmaster@bmxultra.com for details. Basically we are looking for donations or products or even services for auctions/raffles. 100% of profits raised will go directly to the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Naming rights are still up for grabs, contact us for details.

Track Upgrades

Thanks to some awesome friends and family we now have a ram for the BSX starting gate. It should be installed some time over the next few weeks.

Track updates

The track changes are coming along very well so far, with some tweaks that will make the track faster, and a whole lot more fun and challenging, and there are still a whole lot more to come

If you are able to help swing a shovel, drive a bobcat/dingo or just help ride the track and roll the new changes in then keep an eye out for up coming working bees.

14/12 Billy Jolliffe takes inaugural Skin Industries HRV Classic

HRV Classic press release

Lake Macquarie’s Billy Jolliffe has taken out the Elite Men title at the inaugural Skin Industries HRV Classic, held at Park Orchards BMX Club on Sunday.

The 24-year-old New South Welshman won the thrilling final ahead of a star studded field, with Olympian Kamakazi placing second and Warrnambool’s Ashley McCutcheon third.

It was a tense battle right throughout the event, with local riders Olivier Hoarau, Tom Siinmaa and Junior Elite National Champion, Matthew Dunsworth, challenging the interstate riders all day.

The HRV Classic lived up to all the hype, with some of Australia’s best BMX riders assembling for a crack at the $6,000 prize pool, put up by event founder Tony Harvey.

“The event was a complete success. We wanted to showcase BMX in its most exciting form – and to have such a high quality field for both the men and women was fantastic”.

“Our aim was to boost the profile of the sport in the local community by bringing the best riders in the country to Park Orchards”.

The long list of stars was headlined by Olympian, Kamakazi, Victorian Elite Men Champion, Brian Kirkham and South Australian gun, Anthony Dean.

In the Elite Women category, Lilydale’s Ziggy Callan took first place ahead of South Australian Nicole Rankin, with local rider Erin Anderson from Knox rounding out the podium places.

Whilst the Pro riders were the main attraction, the Challenge category riders also got their chance to compete on the main stage. The 5-year-old sprockets were probably the proudest riders of them all, each taking home a massive 50cm trophy for their efforts.

The inaugural Skin Industries HRV Classic is merely the first step in what will hopefully become an iconic annual event for the sport.

“The HRV Classic was a great success and has introduced some new faces to BMX. We hope to make next year’s event bigger and better than this one”.

The Skin Industries HRV Classic would not have been possible without the support of sponsors. Special thanks must go to Park Orchards BMX Club and all sponsors who helped make the event such a success – Skin Industries, HRV Fitness, Altegra, BMXpress, bmxultra.com, BMXMAD, Phirebird, Dirtz track design and Xenon Photography.

The Skin Industries HRV Classic concludes the racing season for 2010. Racing in 2011 will commence with the Track Attack summer series on January 15, 2011.

09/12 Last minute Christmas shopping ideas

by bmxultra.com

Are you stuck for last minute Christmas ideas?

Here’s a few suggestions that will certainly be winners under the Christmas tree this year.

Check out the BMX t-shirt range at shoppe79seventy.com.au/shop delivery is fast and the t-shirts and print are of the highest quality we have ever seen, not to mention great designs. You might even be able to grab one of the last bmxultra.com t-shirts.

What about BMX’s most popular handlebars from S&M? There’s bound to be a model to suit the BMXer, or BMXers, in your family.

There’s also the legendary Profile Racing 3 piece cromo cranks, and all the accessories. The new Profile spline drive spiders and chainrings look awesome, as do the outboard bearings.

There’s some great new 2011 helmets from Troy Lee Designs in both the D2 and D3 models, and the new 2011 THE helmets are looking just as good.

Let’s not forget about some of the latest frames from One Bicycles or even Speed Bicycles or maybe for a few extra dollars you could check out the Supercross Envy frame that BMXplus! put in their Christmas Wish List this year.

If you still can’t decide, make sure you get down to your local bike shop, they are bound to have hundreds of other ideas.

Happy hunting.

08/12 Morphine Industries Florida State Qualifier – St Pete Race Report

Morphine Industries press release

The Morphine Industries Florida based crew headed to St Pete BMX for stop number 3 and 4 to make some noise.  It was good to have young gun Noah Reeves back after a short hiatus from a back injury.

Elite Men – “Money” Mike Kapes headed the crew making his presence know in the PRO OPEN.  Coming off a great performance in Riverview, Mike was amped and ready to continue his trek back to the top.  Saturday started off with a great performance with Mike horsing the competition down the first straight rolling through the motos straight to the main event.  With memories of Riverview still fresh, the crowd as on the edge of their seats to see the battle for the title continue.  Mike burned up the first straight swapping paint with CJ and Tyler.  Holding his own Mike took a slight second behind CJ.

Sunday promised to be a barn burner as well as the pack lined up for a new day.  Mike rolled through motos again with the addition of a dirt nap thanks to a follow rider you slide out in turn 2 taking the back of Mike’s bike with him.  Dang it! All that fresh ink on the arm got scuffed up!  A quick recoop and back to the main event.  Gate dropped and the same battle when on.

13X – Noah Reeves made his qualifier debut fresh off an injury.  The weekend started with a deuce and a couple of unos in the main.  He rounded out the day on the top spot of the podium with a 1st in the main.

Sunday proved to be another great day with the same results in motos (2-1-1) and ending the day just off the top spot with s 2nd in the main.

11X – Richie Dey came to St Pete with a dominate performance racked up from Riverview running only 1 in all motos and mains.  It appeared that nothing different was going to happen at St Pete.   Richie lined up for Open, 11 Crusier and 11x on Saturday and once again dominated from wire to wire in all motos and mains making for a perfect day.

Sunday was a repeated performance with Richie posting up another perfect day.  His year has started with a domination racking up 4 straight perfect weekends.

The next stop for the Morphine Crew is the NBL Christmas Classic in Columbus, Ohio.  Be sure to push the new toys and bills aside and head up, over and down to check it out.

Next stop for the Florida State series is in mid January at Miami South BMX.  Thanks to Mitch Horne, the new Miami track should be host to continued top notch racing in the series.

07/12 Last day to enter for the Skin Industries HRV Classic

by bmxultra.com

The Skin Industries HRV Classic is shaping up well and looks to be host to the best pro line up of any race event in Victoria since the World Championships in 1998. It’s certainly set to be quite a spectacle with the likes of ABA pro champion Sam Willoughby, Kamakazi, and Brian Kirkham in the field. Let’s not forget the army of Victorian pro riders that are killing it at the moment headed up by Tom Siinmaa, Bodi Turner and Olivier Hoarau.

If you are planning on getting along to the HRV Classic at Park Orchards on Sunday why not take your bike down and race and go for the full experience? Maybe take a chance at winning one of the biggest trophies we have seen in this country for near on 20 years? It’s unlikely we will see trophies like that again for a while.

Officially postal entries close today, and so do online entries at 5pm (link), for more information check out the entry form.

07/12 Morphine Industries sends Crew to Tulsa for the ABA Grands

Morphine Industries press release

There can be only one thing that brings droves and droves of people to the state of Oklahoma other than Sooner football – yeah you guessed it baby, BMX racing.  The pinnacle of the year is here again and the Morphine crew hit the road to bring some answers.  We were stoked to send the crew to line up for the festivities.

VET PRO – Tim Dinger  (race report overview by Dinger himself) Friday night at the ROC.   3, 2, 1, in motos.  Crashed in Semi, but still made it out.  Had lane 8 in the main, high low in first turn was in 4th going into 2nd turn.  Adam Tredwell and Chad Street bumping in turn 2.  Tredwell goes down right in front of me and I ran him over.  Bummer for sure…   5th for the day at ROC

Saturday at the Grands.  Winning first moto, then I washed out in the last turn that had no berm, ha ha.  Broke a rib, not fun for the rest of the weekend.  2nd in moto 2, won third moto.  3 Mains.  Spun the gate in the first main, came back to the pack, overshot the pro/am section into the last turn, looped out straight to butt cheek.  Not a good way to start the mains.  Took 4th and 4th for the next 2 mains, but felt that I could have placed better with a better gate selection.  5th overall for the day.

Stoked that Barry won Pro Cruiser, bummed about LaRev’s knee, dust snot for days, after Grands sickness with a broken rib, priceless…….

A PRO/ELITE MEN –  Gavin Lubbe started his weekend off with a bang on Friday night ripping through the  ranks of A PRO men straight to the main.  Pulling the holeshot, he took command of the race finishing with a #2 at the line.

Saturday and Sunday saw Gavin line up for some of the same results in AA PRO.  He worked his way through motos, quarters, and semis to take a spot at the coveted main event gate start.  Unfortunately moto 1 ended with a snapped chain.  The next two motos He fought to get back to form and ended with a 7th place finish.

Gavin Also hit the track in PRO Crusier taking a spot on the podium with a 2nd place finish!!

A PRO – Jason LaRev started the weekend and ended the weekend on Friday.  Jason unfortunately, blew his knee up in one of the motos.   Yo Bro, Quick recovery!!

19-27X – Olijuwon Davis started off the weekend with a throw down Friday taking home the top spot in the ROC. Yes that is right #1.  He continued on into the night with the NAG 5 challenge.  As he put in his own words, “ I fudged up!”  OD took a 6th place

Saturday was starting out to be déjà vu with the Nugget winning moto 1.  However, at the Grands if you don’t bring it every round misfortune will happen.  OD got washed out I the quarters to end the day.

17-18X – Tanner Sebesta saddled up for stacked Junior Men throw down on Friday night.  Putting together some smokin’ laps brought Tanner to main event with a 3rd place finish.

Saturday and Sunday, he continued the assault on class with most of the same riders from Junior Men.  Tanner once again moved through the ranks to take is expected spot at the main event gate and a 4th place finish.   Tanner walked away with a 4 NAG plate for the year.

16X – Damian Cherepko came along way from PA to show the sooner state what the east coast is all about.  He rolled through class in motos, quarters and semis to take his spot at the gate for the main event.  Damian took a podium spot with a 2nd place finish.

Can we pause for a moment of silence….we would like to take this time to thank all the Morphine Factory Team Sponsors and Riders.  It’s been a great year.  Our sponsors have given us the best and our Riders have been the best.  Everyone has pushed it and it’s paid off.  It was a great year and 2011 is looking even better so hold on for the ride.

Thanks to everyone that has been part of this year’s race season.

Morphine Industries would like to thank its Factory Team Sponsors; HARO BIKES (harobikes.com), Fly Racing (www.flyracingbmx.com),  Alienation (www.alienationbmx.com), Sinz Racing (www.sinz-racing.com), Rennen (www.rennendesigngroup.com), Tioga (www.tiogausa.com/bmx), Black Crown (BlackCrownBmx.com)

Without you guys we would be sitting in the dirt.  Instead, we are rockin’ the best looking rigs at the gate and on the podium.

Naming rights are still up for grabs, contact us for details.

Track Upgrades

Thanks to some awesome friends and family we now have a ram for the BSX starting gate. It should be installed some time over the next few weeks.

05/12 VSI Announces $120,000 Pro-Jr. Elite Contingency Program for 2011

VSI Products press release

CERRITOS, CA—VSI Products, Inc. is proud to announce that it will launch an ambitious contingency program that could result in payouts of more than $120,000 to professional and junior elite racers who use VSI products and get on the podium at ABA, NBL and UCI races in 2011.

Starting with the ABA Silver Dollar Nationals in Reno, Nevada, January 16, VSI will pay bonuses to racers using Intense, Speed, Sinz Elite, Sinz and THE products who finish in the top three or four at each of the 14 selected UCI/ABA weekends, five NBL National Tour races, UCI Supercross events and the World Championships.

“We can’t afford to support every racer we’d like to or every racer who wants to ride our stuff. This is a way for us to give back to the sport and support all the riders who really like and prefer to use our products,” said Toby Henderson, VSI’s founding partner.

All professional men and women and junior elite men and women qualify for the contingencies, which range from a low of $3 for a junior rider who gets third using a single smaller VSI item like Sinz Elite grips at an ABA or NBL National to $750 for a male professional winning the Worlds on an Intense or Speed frame. Riders who use all the qualified VSI products and win would get $190 to $1,750, depending on the race and the rider’s level.

Juniors and A Pros will be eligible for the higher AA Pro payout amounts when they race against them in events like UCI Supercross races or combined ABA races.

“We’re following the motocross model for this program. I’m a big fan of motocross. Both sports are similar and we’re trying to elevate BMX to that level of professionalism. I see this as a great way to give back to the sport, especially the younger riders, women and A pros who typically aren’t funded well, if at all,” Henderson said.

All riders must have their bikes inspected by an approved race official before racing to be eligible and must submit reimbursement forms to be paid. More info the process and procedures will be announced soon.

05/12 VSI Re-Signs as Sponsor of Top National Teams

VSI Products press release

CERRITOS, CA—VSI Products, Inc. is proud to announce that it is once again a title sponsor of the top Factory and Shop Teams in the country. For 2011, VSI will once again sponsor Rennen/Intense, J&R Racing and Intense/Spinzz.

“We think it’s really important to give back as much as possible to the sport and support those riders who have worked hard and made it to the top of their classes. In this business that isn’t always easy to do. But even though business has been rough during this economic downturn, I know making a living racing BMX is even tougher,” said Toby Henderson, VSI’s founding partner.

“We’re committed to supporting the best riders with great product and getting it to them when they need it throughout the entire season. We’ve built a reputation as a reliable sponsor that makes reliable frames, components and safety gear and we’re really happy all our teams came back to us for next season. They are all top-notch teams with the world’s best riders. It’s an honor to support them,” Henderson added.

VSI will provide the 25-racer Rennen/Intense team with Intense Podium and Speed M-Series frames, SINZ Elite carbon forks, THE T2 helmets, SINZ Elite XXX cranks, ITS tyres and THE number plates and numbers. Rennen/Intense finished the year as the top National Team in the NBL and was fourth in the ABA Factory Team hunt. VSI and Bizzarro BMX, which manages the team, inked a two-year deal at the ABA Grands last week. In 2012, the team will switch exclusively to Speed frames.

J&R Racing, which took the number-one Shop Team title at the ABA Grands, will ride Speed frames, SINZ Elite carbon forks and THE number plates. The team recently added junior speedster Austin Fowble to its roster.

Intense/Spinzz, formerly Intense/DynaPep, will hit the track on Intense Podium frames, SINZ Elite carbon forks, THE helmets and THE shorts and knee/shin guards. Intense/DynaPep is the 2010 NBL Team Champion.

VSI also remains the title sponsor of the Intense/Phantom/OnTrac Team, which has held numerous national titles and narrowly lost the Factory Team Title at this year’s ABA Grands. Stay tuned for more on the big changes VSI has planned for IPOT in 2011.

I addition, VSI renewed sponsorship agreements with Deluxx Bikes, S&M, SE Racing and Intense Europe for 2011.

03/12 ONE Bicycles Australia at the Victorian State Championships

One Bicycles Australia press release (by Miekel Rose)

This year we decided to enter the Championships at Frankston because of a generous offer by a friend who lives in Victoria who put us up so we could attend the event. A massive thanks to Dave and Robyn “Bronny” Smith and their wonderful family for allowing us to stay with them. In the lead up to this event, Canberra suffered a wet season limiting the time riders could get on the tracks or train. Even though the kids had little or no track time or training, we were determined to make the event. We drove down on the Thursday and stopped in at ECI (Elite Cycle Imports) and were given a warm and wonderful greeting by Gary and his family and a tour of the new warehouse. It was hard to get the kids out of there and they left with some amazing new products by T.H.E., SINZ Elite and Answer along with a bunch of stickers for the trailer.

Friday saw practice and sign on and an opportunity for the kids to turn their legs over and get some bike time! After a bit of a ride we headed back to the Smith residence for a great feed and great company.

Saturday morning was Josh’s first crack at the Champbikx series and he was nervous and excited at the opportunity to see where he sat amongst some of the best riders in his age class Australia wide. Josh rode well and managed to end the day in equal 20th spot. This made him realise he needed to step up his training to catch these superfast lads.

That afternoon the heavens opened up and that made for some difficult, wet, slippery conditions to deal with for Cruiser! All three kids were struggling to find grip out of the gate and some of the corners.

Mikayla was riding 8-10 Girls cruiser on a bike I built for her a week before the event. Mikayla took to her new ONE Junior Cruiser and managed a third in her first race before getting to terms with the slippery gate and then won the next two heats. In the final she came out flying and lead the pack from the get go. As she headed down the third straight, local lass Millie Reed pulled up beside her and the two had a great race almost to the finish line when Millie lost control on the last jump hitting the back of Mikayla’s bike, coming down causing a pile up near the finish line. It was a great race with Mikayla securing the State Champion for the Cruiser class!

Nikalus was also struggling with the slippery gate and was spinning out of the gate for his first three pedals in almost every heat! Nik managed to secure three second places in the heats and sat on the gate for the semi, feeling confident that he would get through to the final. In the semi Nik came out to fast and spun the back tyre for three cranks giving the rest of the field a head start. As he tried to catch up to the pack, a rider got a little loose and took out his front wheel causing him to go down hard over the last jump in the first straight. He picked himself up and rolled through to finish off his day missing the final.

Joshua was one of three 15 year old boys in his cruiser class and found it difficult keeping up with the front runners. After a couple of fifths and a sixth in the heats, saw Josh’s day over too not advancing to the finals.

Overall it was a disappointing day for the boys, but Mikayla was feeling like she was on target to achieve her goals for the weekend. Josh said he felt tired and Nik a little sore at the end of a very wet and muddy day at the track!

Due to the wet conditions I decided to buy some chunkier tyres for the 20” bikes to be prepared for the same wet conditions as the kids experienced in the cruiser event. I was up until 12 midnight changing tyres and trying to sort gearing out due to the tyre changes, I thought I got close to what the kids normally run and hoped this would get them through the Sunday. Sunday came around with a very similar forecast as Saturday!

Mikayla rode well in all of her heats winning two of them and a close second in the other. This set up a re-match with Millie Reed in the final! Mikayla came out of the gate slowly in the final and was dead last over the last jump in the first straight. She battled her way through the pack but had lost touch with Millie who cleared away for an impressive win and the State Champion Title for the 10 girls with Mikayla securing second after a big chase! Not a bad weekend for Mikayla to top off an amazing and long year on the ONE bike!

Nikalus seemed to have worked out his traction issues and was riding well managing to pull a third and two seconds in the heats and sat ready for a quarter final race. In his quarter Nik pulled a second behind his mate Andy Hughes and progressed to the semis. In the semi, Nik had some tough competition and saw him crossing the finish line in the all important fourth spot to claim a finals berth. In the final Nik had gate 7 and came out well but managed to bounce off a few riders allowing the front runners a small buffer heading in to the first corner. Nik came out of the corner in fourth before being passed by Jay Beasley down the second straight. In the third straight Nik rode hard to keep his other mate Steve Henderson at bay. Nik got a little unco in the last corner allowing Steve to pounce. The two boys rode hard to the line with Steve crossing the line inches in front of Nik to steal fifth. Nik was happy with his sixth spot and was stoked for his mate Steve who rode well all weekend!

Joshua was also feeling more confident on the gate after the tyre swap and rode well but not quite well enough getting a fifth in his first and third motos and a seventh in the other after a bad gate! Josh thought that was the end of his day, but he was called back to the gate for a three man run off for the semi. Josh had felt like he was given a life line and was determined to make the semi. The gate dropped in the runoff and Josh had a shocker start. He chased hard but could only manage a second in the runoff, leaving him one point form making the semis. Josh was disappointed in his weekend, but I believe he rode well, but needs to step it up to chase these guys in such a tough age class!

Overall the event ran smoothly. Wet State Finals seem to be the norm these days and yet I still hate them being wet and muddy! There was some great racing and the track held out well once the pipes were cleared and the water ran away. The kids were glad they went, as I think the social aspect of this sport makes it what we all love about it!

Congratulations to all the riders who competed and to all the new State Champions.

Monday saw us heading up to the mountains to pay Mr BMXULTRA Shane Jenkins a visit in the hope for a ride on the BSX Track, but the weather destroyed any chance of that and the track was flooded in a number of crucial areas! Never mind we managed to see the farm and play with the dogs and pick up the 2010 BSX DVD to watch in the car on the way home!

Thanks again to Smithy and his clan, they are special people! To the family that is ECI, thanks for the tour and your time and patience! To Shane for his undying support of Grass Roots sponsorship and the belief in the riders in his teams! Big Thanks to ONE Bicycles for providing us with the best frames on the market and on the tracks! Hope next year that Shep gets the State Championships, which is a favourite hunting ground for the ONE team!

In just five years the event has raised approximately $22,000 which has provided the hospital with new equipment. Funds have been raised through gate takings, raffles, auctions and donations.

Here’s what the Thrillbillies have to say about Big Daddy:

“Pat is a Jersey boy who speaks funny English and likes attention. He gets a lot of it because of his sensational BMX skills, but outside of that, he’s not good at anything. That’s why he’s fun to have around. There’s nothing like watching your buddy crash and burn.”

Brandon May rode in 17-18 cruiser. Brandon lead from start to finish in all his races & came home with a 1st place.

Emily Richardson rode in 13 girls. Emily made the final & ended up in 6th place.

Tyson May rode in 14 boys. Tyson continued his form from the day before by winning his first race on Sunday. However the riders must have been threatened by Tyson & in the third race of the day they pushed him over the corner & ending his day.

Brenton Gibbs rode in 16 boys. Brenton rode out front all day and breezed into the final. In the final Brenton had a crash & had to settle for 8th place.

Nathan May rode in 19-24 men. Nathan qualified easily for the final. In the final he positioned himself well & came home with a 3rd place.

Nathan Barker rode in 25-29 men. Nathan got a good start and was sitting mid pack in the first corner. He held that position and ended up with a 5th place.

Brandon May & Brenton Gibbs rode in A Pro.

Brenton rode well & made it into the semi finals. In the semi final a bad start had him at the back of the field. He could not recover from this & missed out on transfering to the final.

Brandon May was coming off a fantastic ride on Saturday & Sunday was no different. He won all 3 races easily, won the quater final & the semi final & qualified first for the final. In the final he missed the gate and was sitting third down the first straight. A good move in both the first & second corner had him leading by the third straight & he never looked back. He won the final & every race for the day & ended up Victorian #1 in A Pro.
