29/08 New products: Tuf-Neck 22.2mm Pivotal Seat Posts

by bmxultra.com
Tuf-Neck 22.2 Pivotal postWhile checking out the new products that have arrived at Elite Cycle Imports we came across this little gem.

It’s an alloy 22.2mm pivotal post.

We know that pivotal has been around for some time now and it’s here to stay. The entire bmxultra.com crew are running Alienation Pivotal posts and saddles.

We think it’s about time that someone offered pivotal for the little guys in BMX, so we’re happy that Tuf-Neck have stuck their “necks” out on this one.

Now the juniors can use the same seats as their favourite riders. They can now customise their own seat configuration and if they want to can fit a padded seat.

The weight difference between a Pivotal set up and a “onesie” Uni style seat and post combo is tiny and the advantages of Pivotal far out weigh the weight gain.

You can pick up a 22.2 Pivotal post with just about any style or colour seat that you can think of at your favourite ECI dealer.

28/08 Photos: Hurstbridge BMX & Custom Bike Show and Shine

by bmxultra.com
There was a BMX Show and Shine on Sunday at Hurstbridge which is just a short drive away from bmxultra.com HQ so we thought we’d get down there and take a few happy snaps, and take a couple of mid school builds down to mix things up a bit. It was great to catch up with some old faces from BMX past, and some not so old. The event raised $1,100 for the Park Orchards BMX Club. Not a bad effort for a lazy Sunday.

11/08 Olympics BMX (Day 3) Results

by bmxultra.com
Wow! The BMX is now done at the Olympics (until there is an announcement that the IOC will continue to include it), and once again the riders put everything on the line to entertain and win the coveted gold medal. As expected there was lame commentary, injuries, upsets, the emergence of new rising stars and just all round great racing.

If you were able to predict the results email me I’d like to buy a lotto ticket.

Maris Strombergs (LAT) is the Usain Bolt of the BMX world, ok so maybe not as flamboyant, but the guy is simply a machine. He took the gold medal in the men’s class with Sam Willoughby (AUS) winning silver and Carlos Oquendo Zambala (COL) winning bronze.

Mariana Pajon put together the perfect run winning all of her semi final races and then again for the final to take the win in the Women’s class. Sarah Walker (NZL) won Silver and Laura Smulders (NED) won Bronze.

It’s a shame that there is only one gold medal, because all of the riders who competed have made massive sacrifices just to qualify for the Olympics, and they all did their best “on the day”. No matter where they finished they should all be very proud. Heck I think that the sport deserves a medal! It’s one of the many sports that brings life to the Olympics but no other sport at the Olympics means more to me than BMX.

10/08 Olympics BMX (Day 3) Schedule

by bmxultra.com
The third and final day of the BMX racing at the Olympics is scheduled to begin at 3pm London time. That’s Midnight (tonight) Australian Eastern Standard time.

PDT
USA
EDT
Event
15:00 00:00 (Saturday) 07:00 10:00 Women’s Semifinal
15:08 00:08 (Saturday) 07:08 10:08 Men’s Semifinal

16:40 01:40 (Saturday) 08:40 11:40 Men’s Final

The semi finals are a three race format. After the three rounds the top four riders from each semi progress to the main event. The final is a single lap so what you see is what you get.

The Olympics are being aired in Australia on Channel 9 (free to air) and Foxtel.

It looks like Foxtel has a BMX-fest planned for the night, starting at 9:55pm, but the live coverage kicks off at 11:55pm and runs through until about 2:35am. You can catch it on channel 185 London 2.

Channel 9 will also be showing some of the BMX racing from about midnight, but exactly how much is anyone’s guess. Since the Australian riders are in three of the four semis we should see most of the semi finals action, and fingers crossed the Aussies make it to the finals so we can see that as well.

The seeding is all done and dusted and now we are at the first round of eliminations for the Men’s class. The women will sit the day out and return tomorrow for the semi finals. The actual elimination format is very different to what BMX race fans are used to.

This is how it works:

  • The quarter-finals, which are held over five runs, with points for places on each run.
  • After three runs, the best two riders from each quarter-final progress to the semi-finals.
  • The remaining riders compete in the final two quarter-final runs and the best two from each quarter-final also progress to the semi-finals.

The Olympics are being aired in Australia on Channel 9 (free to air) and Foxtel.

Foxtel’s Live coverage starts at 11:55pm and runs until 2:20am. You can catch it on channel 185 London 2.

Channel 9 will be showing some of the BMX racing from about midnight, but exactly how much is anyone’s guess.

09/08 Team bmxultra.com update

by bmxultra.com
It’s crazy how fast a year goes by in BMX. Team bmxultra.com rider Dane Pangallo has now been with us for over 12 months! Since joining the team he’s really stepped up to the plate dominating the A Pro class and always pushing himself to progress. He even took his bikes to the World Championships in London a couple of months back to be the first bmxultra.com team rider to fly the flag in Europe.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Dane for all he has done to help promote bmxultra.com and our team sponsors, and look forward to continue working with him well into the future.

Don’t forget to check out Dane’s own website at danepangallobmx.com

The remainder of the Victorian racers on the team are preparing to come out of hibernation now that the three month break is over.

15:40 00:40 (Thursday) 07:40 10:40 Men’s Seeding Run

The format for the day will be the seeding runs. Generally it’s an elimination round, but since there are only 32 men and 16 women competing at the Olympics the time trial will determine the seeding.

The Olympics are being aired in Australia on Channel 9 (free to air) and Foxtel.

Foxtel’s Live coverage starts at 11:55pm and runs until 1:35am. Before that though is a show called Aussies Abroad: Sam Willoughby a 45min documentary on Sam’s journey to the Olympics. You can catch it on channel 185 London 2.

Exactly what will be aired on Channel 9 isn’t clear, however they have been mentioning BMX as one of the sports coming up. If the last Olympics is anything to go by we probably won’t be seeing the time trials live, but the Aussie teams runs slotted in between other sports. You can be sure that when the racing kicks off for the elimination rounds for day 2 of the BMX there will be good coverage.

If you are looking for something to pass some time in the lead up to the kick off of the BMX racing at the 2012 Olympics (at Midnight tonight Australian Eastern Standard time), be sure to check out this video. It runs for about 25 minutes and is a great watch, we highly recommend it.

This is the story of BMX Racing from it’s historic roots in California in the 1960’s right through the development of the sport to becoming an Olympic event in Beijing in 2008.

07/08 Anarchy Australia’s James Lautier wins at Shepparton

bmxcompound.com.au press release
James Lautier Factory AnarchyJames Lautier returned to racing on fire after Victoria had a 3 month break for the winter.

While there were A and AA Pro classes on offer at Shepparton only a couple of AA Pros entered the event so the Pro classes were combined for a Pro Open.

James took his first Pro class win on board his Anarchy

Coming out of lane 8 in the main James got an awesome start and got straight across to lane 1/2 by the first turn. He got a little awkward at the end of the first straight and he came unclipped, but had enough of a lead to clip in and get going again.

Well done James!

The Anarchy BMX Australia team is co-sponsored by Supercross BMX, Speedline Parts, Profile, Sinz, Alienation, bmxultra.com and Dirt Designs.

About Anarchy BMX

2012 is the rebirth year for Anarchy, new owner, new identity, new bike, new team, it is about to get crazy.

Starting with the heritage, of the original Anarchy Race Frames, we have gone back to the drawing board and built the best 7005 Race frame we could. We use Easton ULR Ultra Light Race Tubing that features Easton’s taper wall technology, we have lowered the profile to be light, stiff and responsive, the seatstays utilize a pierced wishbone design to offer a sleek look and an elongated weld area, not to mention a cool place for the Anarchy A logo at the end.

The CNC’d dropouts are extra thick where your axle bolts on to optimize the stiffness and strength while minimizing weight. Pass through cable guides show the race lineage by making it easy to tear down for travel and allowing the full length housing for optimal braking.

The Australian Anarchy factory team includes Victorian Pro James Lautier and Western Australian Pro Cat Hopkins.

06/08 It’s Olympics week here at bmxultra.com

by bmxultra.com
Yes we know the Olympics have been running for over a week already, we have been watching as much of it as we can, however this is the week BMX fans have been waiting for.

It’s been four years since BMX racing made it’s Olympic debut in Beijing and so much has happened in that time.

In 2012 just fourty-eight international BMXers will line up for their chance at Olympic glory. There will be just two medalists from Beijing returning. Maris Strombergs will look to take his second gold medal in an extremely competitive and unpredictable field. While Laetitia Le Corguille will try to improve on her silver from Beijing. Both Olympians will have a long road to qualify for the finals jam packed full of champions.

Trying to predict an outcome can be fun, even entertaining, but it’s also difficult when you start thinking about it.

The mens field is a lot smaller than what you would see at any regular World Cup race, but it doesn’t make it any easier.

  • Sam Willoughby (AUS), the current World Champion, is one of the hot favourites and given his results over the past few years and especially his consistancy through the current season you would have to pick him for the podium.
  • Marc Willers (NZ), the current ABA Champion, hasn’t had the success of Sam at the World Cup and World Championships this season but he can never be written off. If someone can pull off a big win come crunch time this is the man.
  • Connor Fields (USA), the current USA Champion and leader of the 2012 World Cup series, is almost unbeatable on the big tracks. A crash at the World Championships kept him from the finals, you can be sure he’ll do all he can to avoid making that mistake again.
  • Joris Daudet (FRA), the 2011 World Champion and World Cup Champion, had a blinder of a year last year and going by his second place finish at the World Championships he’s on good pace for the Olympics as well.
  • Khalen Young (AUS), world #2 in 2007, is a real sleeper but this could be the stage for him to step up and steal the show. This guy oozes natural ability.
  • David Herman (USA), placed fifth at the World Championships this year and third at two World Cup rounds so far. Don’t write him off.

The field of 32 men is loaded with talent each of the riders should be proud to represent their home country on the world’s biggest stage.

The women’s field is smaller, but is also hotly contested.

  • Magalie Pottier (FRA), the current world champion, has been consistant all year and is one of the strongest riders in the field. She’s very physical and will be extremely difficult to beat.
  • Caroline Buchanan (AUS), current World Cup series leader, is always in with a chance. Although the World Championships didn’t go all her way, she’s undoubtedly a hot favourite for a medal.
  • Alise Post (USA) made a late charge at the Olympics after a long recovery from injury, and her path back to the top of her field has been impressive. Alise has a lot of heart and a whole lot of skill.
  • Sarah Walker (NZ), fourth place at the 2008 Olympics, dominated right up until she had injury trouble about two years ago. She’s an outside chance at a medal but I think she’s poised to make an impact this week.
  • Mariana Pajon (COL), 2011 World Champion, came back to racing just before the 2012 World Championships after being out with injury and still managed to pull out a fifth place. It’s no wonder Mariana was flag barer for her country at the opening ceremony.

The field of 16 women is going to make for awesome viewing (fingers crossed mainstream Australian TV programmers think so too).

We’ll there you have it, not actually a prediction but I’m confident you will see these riders in the final line going for gold.

We look forward to watching the week unravel.

We have more Olympics information for you coming up this week, including an unfinished interview with Sam Willoughby. Hopefully we’ll be able to finish it some time shortly after the big race. For now here’s a page with some details you might find useful.

We have just been sent this link to the 2012 French Championships which shows the highlights of the elite racing at the event. The running time is around 25 minutes and it’s entirely in French. Unfortunately my one year of basic high school wasn’t enough to understand a single word, but there’s some great racing.

02/08 Arielle Martin suffers injury, withdrawn from Olympic competition

USA Cycling press release
USA Cycling announced Wednesday that Olympic BMX cyclist Arielle Martin (Spanaway, Wash.) suffered an injury during routine training at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., on Tuesday. Due to her injuries, Martin will be unable to make Wednesday’s scheduled trip to London and will be replaced on the U.S. Olympic BMX Cycling Team by Brooke Crain (Visalia, Calif.).

“Arielle has worked extremely hard and was on top form heading into the Olympic Games,” explained USA Cycling V.P. of Athletics Jim Miller. “Unfortunately, she suffered an injury during her final training session before leaving for the Games. She certainly would have contributed to our efforts in London and will be missed by the entire squad.”

Martin was transported to San Diego’s Mercy Hospital Tuesday afternoon where she is receiving treatment for her injuries. The 27-year-old is expected to make a full recovery. Martin was set to begin competing in her first Olympic Games on Wednesday, August 8.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of Arielle’s injury while training this week in preparation for the 2012 Games,” said USA Cycling President & CEO Steve Johnson. “She is a true competitor and will be sorely missed in London. We wish her a complete and speedy recovery.”

Martin will be replaced on the U.S. Olympic BMX Cycling Team by 19-year-old Crain, who has earned two world championship medals in the junior ranks and finished ninth at last summer’s Olympic Test Event. She will join 21-year-old Alise Post (St. Cloud, Minn.) in representing the U.S. women in BMX cycling.

“Arielle is one of the most talented and determined athletes I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with,” stated USA Cycling BMX Programs Director Mike King. “Her leadership and character will be missed both on and off the track. We have the utmost confidence in the depth and talent of our women’s BMX program. Brooke has posted consistent international results, has been training hard and is fully prepared to step in and make an impact in London.”
